Who gave you the heartbeat? 00:16:36.06\00:16:37.80 Who gave you the lung to breathe, all that energy? 00:16:37.83\00:16:42.54 Come on, Mr. Rich man. 00:16:42.57\00:16:44.80 Can't you just-- Would it kill you? 00:16:44.83\00:16:46.71 Would it kill you to say thank you to God? 00:16:46.74\00:16:50.25 It'll kill you, not to. 00:16:50.28\00:16:56.37 And by the way, did u see that? 00:16:56.40\00:16:58.11 My, surplus grain. 00:16:58.14\00:17:01.27 Let me tell you something, 00:17:01.30\00:17:03.01 you'll never have a problem with room for surplus, 00:17:03.04\00:17:06.11 if you give your surplus away. 00:17:06.14\00:17:08.93 There's no problem, give it away. 00:17:08.96\00:17:11.46 Quit hanging on to that excess. 00:17:11.49\00:17:13.51 You don't need it, do you? 00:17:13.54\00:17:18.97 It never occurs to that rich man, 00:17:19.00\00:17:20.97 but they're poor people. 00:17:21.00\00:17:23.09 It doesn't occur to him that 00:17:23.12\00:17:24.19 he wouldn't have a storage problem, 00:17:24.22\00:17:26.21 were he not having a selfish problem. 00:17:26.24\00:17:28.85 Now, would he? 00:17:28.88\00:17:30.18 And so he says to himself this little, 00:17:30.21\00:17:31.97 he goes on verse 19, "And I'll say to myself" self, 00:17:32.00\00:17:36.26 here we go, "'You have plenty 00:17:36.29\00:17:39.52 of grain laid up for many years. 00:17:39.55\00:17:42.82 Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." 00:17:42.85\00:17:47.19 Time out, time out, hey, is it a sin to eat? 00:17:47.22\00:17:50.38 Of course, it's not. Is it a sin to drink? 00:17:50.41\00:17:52.09 It is not, depending on what you drink. 00:17:52.12\00:17:54.96 Is it a sin to be merry? 00:17:54.99\00:17:56.51 It's not a sin to be merry. 00:17:56.54\00:17:57.57 The Bible says, a merry heart, does good, like a medicine. 00:17:57.60\00:18:02.40 The big difference is, you eat and drink to live, 00:18:02.43\00:18:08.06 not live to eat and drink. 00:18:08.09\00:18:11.68 And that's the difference, your focus. 00:18:11.71\00:18:17.92 Late that night, late that night, 00:18:17.95\00:18:20.94 for the umpteenth time he has rerun the numbers. 00:18:20.97\00:18:25.88 Oh, my! 00:18:25.91\00:18:27.05 The rich man crawls into bed beside his slumbering wife, 00:18:27.08\00:18:29.49 it doesn't get any better than this, 00:18:29.52\00:18:31.91 he's muttering to himself and he begins to hum. 00:18:31.94\00:18:36.32 If I were a rich man 00:18:36.35\00:18:41.58 and he drifts off, drifts off to a glorious sleep. 00:18:41.61\00:18:48.72 A sliver of moon light falls through that 00:18:48.75\00:18:51.73 open window across that contented continence. 00:18:51.76\00:18:57.85 The curtains hang motion less, and limp, 00:18:57.88\00:19:00.98 beside the open window when all of a sudden, stiffen. 00:19:01.01\00:19:06.06 And then begins to mysteriously tremble, 00:19:06.09\00:19:08.32 as the midnight wind sweeps into the darkness, 00:19:08.35\00:19:11.25 and as if riding on that wind, an unseen presence. 00:19:11.28\00:19:15.79 The towers over that bent and a voice in the dark speaks, 00:19:15.82\00:19:21.80 you fool, that's exactly 00:19:21.83\00:19:26.06 what Jesus has the voice saying, you fool. 00:19:26.09\00:19:30.15 Look at verse 20, 00:19:30.18\00:19:31.71 "This very night your life will be demanded from you. 00:19:31.74\00:19:35.22 Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?" 00:19:35.25\00:19:38.52 And with that pronouncement, 00:19:46.58\00:19:48.98 the man jerks up, clutches his chest, 00:19:49.01\00:19:51.87 and before he can awaken her, he's dead. 00:19:51.90\00:19:55.47 The end! 00:19:55.50\00:20:00.14 What a great way to wrap up the school, isn't it? 00:20:00.17\00:20:03.93 What is his point? 00:20:03.96\00:20:05.00 Let's let this master story teller make his point. 00:20:05.03\00:20:06.46 Look at this. 00:20:06.49\00:20:07.54 Where's that point, verse 21, Jesus says, 00:20:07.57\00:20:08.92 you want to know the point, 00:20:08.95\00:20:09.98 "This is how it will be with those who store up things 00:20:10.01\00:20:13.68 for themselves but are not rich toward God." 00:20:13.71\00:20:18.47 Listen ladies and gentlemen, we may not be able to exigent 00:20:18.50\00:20:20.57 every fine little detail of this parable 00:20:20.60\00:20:22.96 but it is not rocket science, 00:20:22.99\00:20:24.40 to suddenly conclude with only one reading that 00:20:24.43\00:20:26.92 whatever that this being rich toward God is, 00:20:26.95\00:20:29.35 it is utterly essential 00:21:40.82\00:21:44.23 Thursday night, David Ramsey, Coast to Coast live. 00:21:44.26\00:21:47.88 We had my friend Dave on both screens 00:21:47.91\00:21:50.05 coming from Tulsa, Oklahoma 00:21:50.08\00:21:52.56 and all my, he spent an hour and a half 00:21:52.59\00:21:54.90 talking about the economic meltdown we're in 00:21:54.93\00:21:58.10 and where do we go from here. 00:21:58.13\00:21:59.76 I am very grateful. 00:21:59.79\00:22:00.92 Karen and I were sitting there, 00:22:00.95\00:22:02.19 you know, I'm so grateful he spoke a word of hope 00:22:02.22\00:22:04.47 in the midst of this very uncertain time. 00:22:04.50\00:22:07.99 But I need to tell you that as a follower 00:22:08.02\00:22:09.56 because he didn't deal with a lot of specifics, 00:22:09.59\00:22:11.49 he was dealing with generalities. 00:22:11.52\00:22:13.50 But as a follower-- Monday night, 00:22:13.53\00:22:15.41 and then next Monday night, two Monday nights 00:22:15.44\00:22:17.41 we're gonna have a seminar, right here, 00:22:17.44\00:22:20.50 you got two financial young, 00:22:20.53\00:22:22.41 skilled young adults, by the way. 00:22:22.44\00:22:24.46 Bryan von Dorpowski, Scott Schalk 00:22:24.49\00:22:25.93 and they will read out some specifics, 00:22:25.96\00:22:28.32 how to get out of debt and stay out, 00:22:28.35\00:22:30.77 just this two nights. 00:22:30.80\00:22:31.94 Then this fall, we're gonna give 00:22:31.97\00:22:33.11 the financial peace university with the, right here, 00:22:33.14\00:22:37.25 we'll give you the dates, this fall. 00:22:37.28\00:22:39.29 By the way, let me also point out to you that, 00:22:39.32\00:22:40.91 in today's bulletin, there is a brand new, 00:22:40.94\00:22:43.14 did you see this little insert faith and finance. 00:22:43.17\00:22:45.95 There is a brand new... 00:22:45.98\00:22:50.34 how to seminar, to get us through these times. 00:22:50.37\00:22:53.52 And we're gonna be offering that seminar as well. 00:22:53.55\00:22:55.10 I see one of the seminar authors here, Ed Reed. 00:22:55.13\00:22:57.92 And works out it about Ed, 00:22:57.95\00:22:59.21 we're gonna have that this fall as well. 00:22:59.24\00:23:02.06 All right, but right now, there's stuff we can do. 00:23:02.09\00:23:04.31 We're not gonna have to wait for this fall. 00:23:04.34\00:23:05.54 Secret number four, but jot down the point that 00:23:05.57\00:23:07.47 we didn't want to forget, would you? 00:23:07.50\00:23:09.12 Whatever it means, jot this down, 00:23:09.15\00:23:10.98 "Whatever it means this idea of being rich toward God" 00:23:11.01\00:23:15.37 make sure you put the quotation marks around it 00:23:15.40\00:23:17.93 because those are Jesus words. 00:23:17.96\00:23:19.98 "Whatever it means this idea of being rich toward God 00:23:20.01\00:23:22.85 must be utterly essential to life!" 00:23:22.88\00:23:28.14 Keep your pen, moving. 00:23:28.17\00:23:29.20 "Because if you're not," rich toward God, 00:23:29.23\00:23:32.83 "all that you have and all that you are will die with you." 00:23:32.86\00:23:35.69 That's the point. 00:23:35.72\00:23:37.21 Short little parable sharp, big, truth. 00:23:37.24\00:23:43.11 Which by the way, is Jesus advance point 00:23:43.14\00:23:44.69 that He slips into, the introduction. 00:23:44.72\00:23:47.11 We skipped the introduction. 00:23:47.14\00:23:48.18 But I want you to read that introduction. 00:23:48.21\00:23:49.47 Go back to verse 13, same chapter, 00:23:49.50\00:23:53.09 pretty little for the parable. 00:23:53.12\00:23:54.30 "Someone in the crowd," so He's teaching in this crowd. 00:23:54.33\00:23:56.46 "Someone in the crowd said to him, 'hey, teacher, 00:23:56.49\00:23:59.89 tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.'" 00:23:59.92\00:24:02.34 Will you? 00:24:02.37\00:24:04.45 You know what, there's nothing more pathetic 00:24:04.48\00:24:07.24 than a family that dissolves 00:24:07.27\00:24:08.90 into a food fight over inheritance. 00:24:08.93\00:24:13.16 Bring in the lawyers, let's go to probate court, 00:24:13.19\00:24:15.49 let's settle this once and for all. 00:24:15.52\00:24:17.35 Are you crazy? 00:24:17.38\00:24:19.39 There isn't enough there to make it 00:24:19.42\00:24:20.92 worth destroying your family. 00:24:20.95\00:24:24.44 Give it up. 00:24:24.47\00:24:27.11 You'll be fine. 00:24:27.14\00:24:29.81 And Jesus by the way, He's making that point. 00:24:29.84\00:24:31.68 He shoots back to this man, 00:24:31.71\00:24:32.97 not a great complementary word here. 00:24:33.00\00:24:34.49 Hey, man. 00:24:34.52\00:24:37.12 You "Who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?'" 00:24:37.15\00:24:40.60 That's verse 14, now comes verse 15. 00:24:40.63\00:24:42.27 Then Jesus turns to the crowd and he says, 00:24:42.30\00:24:44.15 "'Watch out! 00:24:44.18\00:24:45.45 Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, 00:24:45.48\00:24:48.24 life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.'" 00:24:48.27\00:24:53.32 By the way, once upon a time, there was a rich man 00:24:53.35\00:24:55.81 and boom he shoots in to the parable. 00:24:55.84\00:24:57.55 But I want to make sure that you get the kind of pre, 00:24:57.58\00:24:59.42 the kind of the sub-punch line that he gives before. 00:24:59.45\00:25:03.25 Jot it down please. How did he put it here? 00:25:03.28\00:25:06.11 "For a life does not consist 00:25:06.14\00:25:08.03 in an abundance of possessions." 00:25:08.06\00:25:12.15 Boy, how true? 00:25:12.18\00:25:13.68 In fact, I wrote the sermon yesterday, 00:25:13.71\00:25:15.27 pew research came out with a study. 00:25:15.30\00:25:18.76 National survey, cell phone and telephones, 00:25:18.79\00:25:21.68 finding out, how Americans are surviving this meltdown. 00:25:21.71\00:25:24.57 They are finding out that Americans 00:25:24.60\00:25:26.06 are settling now for less. 00:25:26.09\00:25:27.92 Stuff we have to have before, we don't have to have now. 00:25:27.95\00:25:34.77 We're not, we're not that-- we're pretty bright. 00:25:34.80\00:25:39.93 And that's what Jesus point. 00:25:39.96\00:25:40.99 Look, life does not consist 00:25:41.02\00:25:42.36 in the abundance and possessions. 00:25:42.39\00:25:43.99 There's something exponentially 00:25:44.02\00:25:46.28 more important than possessions. 00:25:46.31\00:25:49.11 And in fact, if we hadn't just parachuted 00:25:49.14\00:25:51.13 in to the middle of Luke's gospel, 00:25:51.16\00:25:52.51 we'd already know. 00:25:52.54\00:25:53.59 The readers already know. 00:25:53.62\00:25:55.06 But we just come diving into the middle of the gospel 00:25:55.09\00:25:57.76 and so we missed what Luke has already inserted. 00:25:57.79\00:26:01.16 And what is he inserted? 00:26:01.19\00:26:02.22 A single line in the Sermon on the Mount. 00:26:02.25\00:26:04.53 Mathew left it out completely. 00:26:04.56\00:26:06.65 Thank you, Dr. Luke, for remembering it. 00:26:06.68\00:26:09.77 He inserts it. 00:26:09.80\00:26:11.28 I want you to go back just a few pages to chapter 6, 00:26:11.31\00:26:13.70 Luke Chapter 6. 00:26:13.73\00:26:15.15 Luke's rendition of the Sermon on the Mount. 00:26:15.18\00:26:19.10 Luke's rendition of the Sermon on the Mount. 00:26:19.13\00:26:21.14 Verse 38. 00:26:21.17\00:26:23.94 All right, Mathew-- I mean Luke 6:38. 00:26:23.97\00:26:29.96 All right, Jesus speaking. 00:26:29.99\00:26:31.04 If you have a red letter Bible 00:26:31.07\00:26:32.12 they are to be just as red as that parable was red. 00:26:32.15\00:26:34.58 "Give Jesus says, and it will be given to you. 00:26:34.61\00:26:39.98 A good measure, pressed down, 00:26:40.01\00:26:41.93 shaken together and running over, 00:26:41.96\00:26:43.27 will be poured into your lap. 00:26:43.30\00:26:45.95 For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." 00:26:45.98\00:26:52.29 Now, I've to remind you, 00:26:52.32\00:26:53.39 incase you forgot that the ancients, 00:26:53.42\00:26:55.16 they'd wear this outer garment, 00:26:55.19\00:26:56.32 long outer garment that 00:26:56.35\00:26:57.38 would go all the way down to the feet. 00:26:57.41\00:26:59.11 The outer garment became their grocery bag, 00:26:59.14\00:27:01.71 or their suitcase. 00:27:01.74\00:27:03.52 Whenever they travel or went shopping, 00:27:03.55\00:27:04.72 because they're gonna reach down, 00:27:04.75\00:27:06.00 all the way down, grab the end 00:27:06.03\00:27:07.36 and pull it up like this 00:27:07.39\00:27:08.72 and now they have the grocery bag. 00:27:08.75\00:27:09.94 And when they're in that little village bazaar, 00:27:09.97\00:27:11.88 would you like some grain? 00:27:11.91\00:27:12.98 I sure would. They're holding the pocket. 00:27:13.01\00:27:15.49 The Greek word is for a bosom pocket. 00:27:15.52\00:27:17.29 They're holding the pocket and that merchant, 00:27:17.32\00:27:18.91 he's just poring that grain in and you could see it, 00:27:18.94\00:27:20.73 wow, wow, pressed down, 00:27:20.76\00:27:22.65 shaking together, wow, spilling over. 00:27:22.68\00:27:25.31 That's what Jesus is describing. 00:27:25.34\00:27:27.47 When you give, it'll come back to you the same way, 00:27:27.50\00:27:31.43 pressed down, pressing it way into down, 00:27:31.46\00:27:33.69 pressing together and poring over. 00:27:33.72\00:27:39.33 Give, He says, give and it'll be given to you. 00:27:39.36\00:27:44.21 By the way, I love the way Eugene Peterson-- 00:27:44.24\00:27:45.75 let's put this on the screen. 00:27:45.78\00:27:47.19 Eugene Peterson's, rendition in the message Bible. 00:27:47.22\00:27:51.22 Look how he translates this verse. 00:27:51.25\00:27:53.06 You'll have to fill it in. 00:27:53.09\00:27:54.25 Give-- Jesus speaking, 00:27:54.28\00:27:55.62 "Give away your life, you'll find life given back," 00:27:55.65\00:27:59.81 but not merely given back 00:27:59.84\00:28:01.62 "given back with bonus and blessing." 00:28:01.65\00:28:05.89 Giving, not getting, write that word in getting. 00:28:05.92\00:28:09.78 Giving, not getting, is the way, 00:28:09.81\00:28:12.50 generosity begets generosity. 00:28:12.53\00:28:17.75 I love that. 00:28:17.78\00:28:18.82 Generosity begets generosity. 00:28:18.85\00:28:20.59 Give and it'll be given to you. 00:28:20.62\00:28:24.05 I got to tell you, one of my favorite stories, 00:28:24.08\00:28:25.61 when I was a boy was the story of Elijah. 00:28:25.64\00:28:27.87 I grew up with Elijah my hero. 00:28:27.90\00:28:28.95 I mean, could there be 00:28:28.98\00:28:30.04 anybody greater than that prophet Elijah? 00:28:30.07\00:28:32.25 And you remember how his life story begins. 00:28:32.28\00:28:35.10 I mean, You think what it would be like. 00:28:35.13\00:28:36.99 You, going straight through, 00:28:37.02\00:28:38.55 right past the secret service, straight into the White House, 00:28:38.58\00:28:42.05 down the corridors, until you find 00:28:42.08\00:28:44.08 yourselves standing in the oval office 00:28:44.11\00:28:46.65 in front of president Obama. 00:28:46.68\00:28:49.84 And you look at the president and you say, mister president, 00:28:49.87\00:28:52.93 I'm here to tell you 00:28:52.96\00:28:54.02 that there will not be a drop of rain or dew, 00:28:54.05\00:28:56.66 until you hear from me again. 00:28:56.69\00:28:58.14 And you pivot on your heel 00:28:58.17\00:28:59.65 and you leave that building and you wisely go into hiding. 00:28:59.68\00:29:05.88 That is precisely, what Elijah did. 00:29:05.91\00:29:08.63 He goes into hiding. 00:29:08.66\00:29:10.98 God says, hey, little brook, little brook called Cherith. 00:29:11.01\00:29:16.08 Go to Cherith. 00:39:38.00\00:39:39.34 "The only reason there is a local church 00:39:39.37\00:39:42.16 is because local Christians are local givers." 00:39:42.19\00:39:45.98 That's why. 00:39:46.01\00:39:47.15 If nobody at Pioneer gave, 00:39:47.18\00:39:48.92 there'd be no church on this campus. 00:39:48.95\00:39:50.34 Adios. 00:39:50.37\00:39:53.02 But because people give, we're here. 00:39:53.05\00:39:57.41 I want to tell you something, I bow before God Almighty 00:39:57.44\00:40:03.11 when I realize the kind of giving 00:40:03.14\00:40:06.04 that takes place in this university congregation, 00:40:06.07\00:40:09.69 this is not a wealthy congregation. 00:40:09.72\00:40:12.45 When I see men, when I see women, 00:40:12.48\00:40:14.13 when I see young adults, when I see teenagers, 00:40:14.16\00:40:15.98 when I see little children, 00:40:16.01\00:40:17.71 who are giving as an act of worship and devotion to God. 00:40:17.74\00:40:21.09 Not just return of tithe, 00:40:21.12\00:40:22.16 they're giving beyond the tithe. 00:40:22.19\00:40:23.70 When I see that, I bow down to God 00:40:23.73\00:40:25.62 and I say, God, it doesn't get any better than this. 00:40:25.65\00:40:28.47 It doesn't get any better than this. 00:40:28.50\00:40:31.12 In fact, the treasurer, the other day, our accountant, 00:40:31.15\00:40:34.33 shoved a tithe envelope in to my hands 00:40:34.36\00:40:36.52 and he said Dwight, I think you need to open this one? 00:40:36.55\00:40:37.82 And boy, it's kind of crunchy and full and I am thinking, 00:40:37.85\00:40:40.03 this is a gas, what is it? 00:40:40.06\00:40:42.02 So I got my letter opener 00:40:42.05\00:40:43.13 and slicked that tithe envelope, open 00:40:43.16\00:40:45.34 and I dumped out on to my desk, 00:40:45.37\00:40:47.74 a few beads, a couple of trinkets and four pennies 00:40:47.77\00:40:51.23 and then on the cover of the tithe envelope 00:40:51.26\00:40:53.04 in a childish scroll, for Jesus, for Jesus. 00:40:53.07\00:40:59.24 I want to tell you something, if you're young, 00:40:59.27\00:41:03.89 if you're young, 00:41:03.92\00:41:06.44 this is the perfect time, to start giving. 00:41:06.47\00:41:11.50 'Cause listen, you're young now, 00:41:11.53\00:41:14.06 but if you give, 00:41:14.09\00:41:15.65 you'll become a very old giver one day. 00:41:15.68\00:41:22.08 Give and it'll be given back to you. 00:41:22.11\00:41:24.76 But you have to start this. 00:41:24.79\00:41:26.04 You got to break the cycle of selfishness. 00:41:26.07\00:41:28.04 You got to say, I got to give. 00:41:28.07\00:41:30.33 I don't care how poor you are 00:41:30.36\00:41:31.44 or how rich you are you got to give. 00:41:31.47\00:41:34.16 Give and it will be given back to you. 00:41:34.19\00:41:36.21 Press down, it can't even keep it in that pocket. 00:41:36.24\00:41:40.12 I don't know how God is gonna make it up to you. 00:41:40.15\00:41:43.70 I just know that Jesus said, give 00:41:43.73\00:41:47.53 and it will be given back to you. 00:41:47.56\00:41:51.02 So you're here at Pioneer or wherever else you worship 00:41:51.05\00:41:54.27 I want you to experience the endorphin joy 00:41:54.30\00:41:58.23 that Jesus is describing, give. 00:41:58.26\00:42:01.12 You never have given before, who cares? 00:42:01.15\00:42:03.74 Start now. 00:42:03.77\00:42:05.47 It's about surviving and thriving 00:42:05.50\00:42:08.16 in the midst of this economic meltdown. 00:42:08.19\00:42:10.00 Start giving now. 00:42:10.03\00:42:11.24 Grab a fist full of tithe envelopes, 00:42:11.27\00:42:12.73 when you leave this place 00:42:12.76\00:42:13.84 and start putting money in it 00:42:13.87\00:42:15.24 and bring it back and bring it back. 00:42:15.27\00:42:17.79 Wherever you worship, bring it back 00:42:17.82\00:42:20.98 and God will make it up to you because as far as I know, 00:42:21.01\00:42:25.60 he's the biggest giver in the universe. 00:42:25.63\00:42:30.89 Come on say it out loud with me, John 3:16, 00:42:30.92\00:42:32.88 from the Old King James, "For God so loved the world, 00:42:32.91\00:42:38.30 that he gave his only begotten Son, 00:42:38.33\00:42:41.60 that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, 00:42:41.63\00:42:46.47 but have everlasting life." 00:42:46.50\00:42:49.75 A century ago, these words were written. 00:42:49.78\00:42:52.24 I'll put it on the screen for you, 00:42:52.27\00:42:53.59 you have it in your study guide. 00:42:53.62\00:42:55.66 "Let us surrender ourselves a living sacrifice, 00:42:55.69\00:42:59.46 and give our all to Jesus. 00:42:59.49\00:43:03.88 It is His, we are His purchased possession. 00:43:03.91\00:43:07.28 Those who are recipients of His grace, 00:43:07.31\00:43:09.53 who contemplate the cross of Calvary, 00:43:09.56\00:43:11.99 will not question concerning the proportion to be given," 00:43:12.02\00:43:14.23 well, I don't want to give too much, you know. 00:43:14.26\00:43:16.01 No. 00:43:16.04\00:43:17.16 "But they will feel that the richest offering 00:43:17.19\00:43:18.92 is all too meager," 00:43:18.95\00:43:20.58 no matter what I give it's all too meager, 00:43:20.61\00:43:23.16 "all disproportionate to the great gift 00:43:23.19\00:43:26.05 of the only begotten Son of the infinite God." 00:43:26.08\00:43:30.07 Final sentence. 00:43:30.10\00:43:31.25 "Through self-denial, the poorest" 00:43:31.28\00:43:34.00 hit the pause button right there. 00:43:34.03\00:43:37.10 Because you know, how you and I think?
