00:14:22.22\00:14:25.61 For the everlasting riches of Your mercy. 00:14:25.64\00:14:30.83 For Your patience that is born with us. 00:14:30.86\00:14:35.76 For earth and sky 00:14:35.79\00:14:38.27 and all the beauties of this world in glorious spring time. 00:14:38.30\00:14:44.60 We rejoice to see 00:14:44.63\00:14:46.19 the miracle of life all around us once again. 00:14:46.22\00:14:50.57 Life coming from seeming death. 00:14:50.60\00:14:55.72 We take hope as we remember what Jesus can do for us. 00:14:55.75\00:15:02.26 We uplift to You, all who have come forward this morning, 00:15:02.29\00:15:06.60 some to say thank You for a special blessing, 00:15:06.63\00:15:10.83 some to lay before You a request or concern. 00:15:10.86\00:15:14.74 Hear our prayers, oh Lord. 00:15:14.77\00:15:18.77 Amen. 00:15:18.80\00:15:20.30 Thank you Andrews Academy. 00:18:35.08\00:18:36.81 The concert band, powerful. 00:18:36.84\00:18:38.89 Thank you very much. 00:18:38.92\00:18:40.02 That music perhaps reflects 00:18:44.64\00:18:46.10 how some of us are feeling right now. 00:18:46.13\00:18:50.81 Strong and bombastic and angry. 00:18:50.84\00:18:56.06 I just learned last night 00:19:02.11\00:19:06.50 of a story that makes me angry. 00:19:06.53\00:19:14.09 There are some of you here in worship who are angry 00:19:14.12\00:19:19.53 for reasons known only to you and God. 00:19:19.56\00:19:27.16 So often anger has to do with 00:19:27.19\00:19:31.01 our sense of a miscarriage of justice, something unfair. 00:19:31.04\00:19:38.06 I'm angry. 00:19:38.09\00:19:40.34 I'm going to ask God right now 00:19:40.37\00:19:42.78 to not let that anger seep into this teaching, 00:19:42.81\00:19:48.37 because this teaching addresses what makes us angry. 00:19:48.40\00:19:54.48 And I don't want to get in the way. 00:19:54.51\00:19:56.37 You need to hear what Jesus is about to teach you 00:19:56.40\00:20:01.50 through a passage in the gospels. 00:20:01.53\00:20:07.38 I want to pray with you. 00:20:07.41\00:20:09.81 Then we'll plunge into the Word together. 00:20:09.84\00:20:13.47 Holy Father, that music was strong. 00:20:13.50\00:20:19.90 You got to know Your children. 00:20:19.93\00:20:23.15 There are times when we have strong feelings, 00:20:23.18\00:20:29.84 and we don't know what to do. 00:20:29.87\00:20:34.30 We're not sure how to right the wrong. 00:20:34.33\00:20:41.59 We're not sure how to take away the injustice, 00:20:41.62\00:20:46.28 particularly when free will is involved 00:20:46.31\00:20:48.68 and human choices are protected by You, 00:20:48.71\00:20:54.54 as we would only have it. 00:20:54.57\00:20:57.49 This is been some week on this planet, 00:20:57.52\00:21:03.03 in this nation, upon this campus. 00:21:03.06\00:21:08.24 Oh God, a word, please. 00:21:08.27\00:21:13.29 Hide us all 00:21:18.52\00:21:21.13 so that Christ's spirit might get through to all of us. 00:21:21.16\00:21:26.68 We pray in Jesus' name, amen. 00:21:26.71\00:21:32.29 There is an ugly word 00:21:32.32\00:21:36.78 in our human vocabulary 00:21:36.81\00:21:40.36 that most of us wish to never use. 00:21:40.39\00:21:44.95 It is a dark word. 00:21:44.98\00:21:48.46 It feels cruel and angry. 00:21:48.49\00:21:54.07 The word is revenge, revenge. 00:21:54.10\00:22:00.01 What does revenge mean? 00:22:00.04\00:22:02.44 Simply put, revenge means settling the score. 00:22:02.47\00:22:09.63 Revenge happens when self perceived justice 00:22:09.66\00:22:14.65 decides to take matters into its own hands 00:22:14.68\00:22:18.78 and settle the score. 00:22:18.81\00:22:20.77 Sometimes with tragic, tragic consequences, 00:22:20.80\00:22:25.35 as the whole world observed this last week. 00:22:25.38\00:22:33.14 The tragedy on the campus of Virginia Tech, 00:22:33.17\00:22:39.05 in that massacre, 00:22:39.08\00:22:41.32 the near tragedy on our own campus, 00:22:41.35\00:22:45.75 on the same day at almost the same moment. 00:22:45.78\00:22:52.25 Because of a self perceived need to settle the score 00:22:52.28\00:22:59.53 and take care of justice, take it into his own hands. 00:22:59.56\00:23:04.94 Does God behave that way? 00:23:04.97\00:23:09.42 Once upon a time, Jesus told a story 00:23:09.45\00:23:12.74 and it's going to surprise you, because it sure seems like, 00:23:12.77\00:23:18.46 in fact, God feels the same way. 00:23:18.49\00:23:22.36 Open your Bible, please, to the Gospel of St. Luke. 00:23:22.39\00:23:26.80 The gospel of Luke 18. 00:23:26.83\00:23:32.88 In a story about vengeance 00:23:32.91\00:23:36.44 and justice and God. 00:23:36.47\00:23:43.04 Because here we have been in a semester 00:23:43.07\00:23:45.76 and we've been talking mercy, mercy, mercy, mercy 00:23:45.79\00:23:48.48 and it is a fair question to be raised 00:23:48.51\00:23:50.56 at some point along the way, okay, boy. 00:23:50.59\00:23:56.91 Whatever happened to justice? 00:23:56.94\00:23:59.89 Is there no justice in the divine heart of mercy, 00:23:59.92\00:24:04.37 no vengeance 00:24:04.40\00:24:07.14 when the innocent suffer in the hands of a perpetrator? 00:24:07.17\00:24:12.60 No vengeance. 00:24:12.63\00:24:14.64 Jesus told a story, once upon a time, 00:24:19.33\00:24:22.59 Luke Chapter 18. 00:24:22.62\00:24:25.03 If you didn't bring a Bible today, 00:24:25.06\00:24:26.09 grab that pew Bible in front of you because this-- 00:24:26.12\00:24:28.17 you haven't read the story in a long time 00:24:28.20\00:24:29.71 and you need to see this story. 00:24:29.74\00:24:32.08 Luke Chapter 18, 00:24:32.11\00:24:33.14 let me give you the page number in the pew Bible, 00:24:33.17\00:24:34.53 that would be page 706, New King James Version. 00:24:34.56\00:24:39.28 Those of you watching on television, 00:24:39.31\00:24:40.42 grab a Bible if there's one near you. 00:24:40.45\00:24:42.59 Take a look at this, will you? 00:24:42.62\00:24:44.19 Luke 18:1, 00:24:44.22\00:24:45.66 "Then, He, Jesus, spoke a parable to them, 00:24:45.69\00:24:47.75 that men and women ought always to pray and not lose heart." 00:24:47.78\00:24:51.86 Now that is the primary punch line to this story, 00:24:51.89\00:24:55.32 but I'm not concerned today about the primary punch line, 00:24:55.35\00:24:57.40 it's the secondary punch line and it is inescapable. 00:24:57.43\00:25:00.24 You'll get it, trust me, you'll get it. 00:25:00.27\00:25:02.22 The secondary punch line is what we're looking for today. 00:25:02.25\00:25:05.22 So Jesus speaks in verse 2 00:25:05.25\00:25:06.64 and if you have a red letterd Bible, 00:25:06.67\00:25:07.75 now it's all red, it's all red. 00:25:07.78\00:25:10.33 This is Jesus telling the story. 00:25:10.36\00:25:12.12 Verse 2, and Jesus said, 00:25:12.15\00:25:13.28 "There was in a certain city 00:25:13.31\00:25:15.30 a judge who did not fear God nor regard man." 00:25:15.33\00:25:20.38 I've known a few judges in my life. 00:25:20.41\00:25:22.69 Tried not to know them on a very intimate basis 00:25:22.72\00:25:24.66 but had to meet with them on occasion. 00:25:24.69\00:25:29.49 Now here's a judge who, as you'll know in just a moment, 00:25:29.52\00:25:32.13 is proud that he is both Godless and heartless. 00:25:32.16\00:25:36.61 Most of the judges I've met 00:25:36.64\00:25:37.70 seemed to be fairly compassionate individuals, 00:25:37.73\00:25:39.48 but I suppose there are a few judges, 00:25:39.51\00:25:41.83 Godless and heartless, this is one of them. 00:25:41.86\00:25:44.42 Jesus said there was a city once upon a time 00:25:44.45\00:25:46.02 and in this city was a judge 00:25:46.05\00:25:47.43 who is both Godless and heartless. 00:25:47.46\00:25:49.54 And next verse, verse 3. 00:25:49.57\00:25:50.96 In that same city was the widow. 00:25:50.99\00:25:53.24 Now, in this, in the culture of the orient 00:25:53.27\00:25:55.70 in which Jesus is telling the story, 00:25:55.73\00:25:57.38 we're talking, ladies and gentlemen, 00:25:57.41\00:25:58.87 about the bottom of the food chain. 00:25:58.90\00:26:01.51 A widow is at the very bottom. 00:26:01.54\00:26:02.78 She's the most helpless. 00:26:02.81\00:26:04.16 And I tell you what, if she dies, 00:26:04.19\00:26:06.00 if rather her husband dies and she has no kids, 00:26:06.03\00:26:08.22 she is really up a creek without a paddle. 00:26:08.25\00:26:11.60 If she has no sons, 00:26:11.63\00:26:13.17 there is nobody that goes to care for her, 00:26:13.20\00:26:15.23 she has no advocate, she has to do it all herself. 00:26:15.26\00:26:18.15 She's a widow of that caliber. 00:26:18.18\00:26:20.70 In the same city, Jesus says in verse 3, 00:26:20.73\00:26:22.62 "There was a widow, and she came to the judge 00:26:22.65\00:26:25.25 and she said, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.'" 00:26:25.28\00:26:29.89 The Greek word can actually be translated two ways. 00:26:29.92\00:26:32.60 It could be translated avenge me, I want revenge, 00:26:32.63\00:26:35.45 I want avenge, avengement, avenge me 00:26:35.48\00:26:38.55 or can be translated, give me justice, 00:26:38.58\00:26:40.87 I got an adversary. 00:26:40.90\00:26:42.38 Well, Jesus doesn't tell us what's going on here. 00:26:42.41\00:26:45.43 We read between the lines. 00:26:45.46\00:26:46.62 Apparently when her beloved life companion died, 00:26:46.65\00:26:51.38 there was a piece of family property 00:26:51.41\00:26:52.87 that he had mortgaged out to somebody else 00:26:52.90\00:26:54.49 and it's time for her to get that property back, 00:26:54.52\00:26:56.97 but whoever has the property is refusing to do it. 00:26:57.00\00:26:59.65 Won't give it back. 00:26:59.68\00:27:00.71 No, no, no, you have no-- he's gone. 00:27:00.74\00:27:06.37 So she has to go to the court and she pleads for justice. 00:27:06.40\00:27:11.53 Verse 4, "And..." 00:27:11.56\00:27:13.02 Jesus said, let me tell about that judge again. 00:27:13.05\00:27:15.39 "He would not for a while." 00:27:15.42\00:27:17.98 In the Greek it reads this way. 00:27:18.01\00:27:19.16 He kept on refusing her. 00:27:19.19\00:27:21.23 Over and over she kept coming, over and over you can say, 00:27:21.26\00:27:23.83 he kept saying, no, no, no, no, no, don't have time, go. 00:27:23.86\00:27:28.16 He would not for a while. 00:27:28.19\00:27:30.99 I say for a while because he maybe Godless 00:27:31.02\00:27:34.22 and he maybe heartless but he is not mindless. 00:27:34.25\00:27:38.10 There's only so much of this you can take. 00:27:38.13\00:27:41.14 Bright, bright judge. 00:27:41.17\00:27:43.59 As verse 4 says, "And he would not for a while, 00:27:43.62\00:27:45.50 but afterward he said within himself..." 00:27:45.53\00:27:47.58 He's rather proud of who he is. 00:27:47.61\00:27:49.24 "Though I do not fear God nor regard man." 00:27:49.27\00:27:52.49 I am godless and I am heartless, 00:27:52.52\00:27:54.01 I'm a coolheaded jurist. 00:27:54.04\00:27:56.40 'Even though I am," verse 5, 00:27:56.43\00:27:58.29 "yet, because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, 00:27:58.32\00:28:02.75 lest by her continual coming she weary me.'' 00:28:02.78\00:28:06.79 Now Peterson, in his rendition in the message 00:28:06.82\00:28:09.77 of this particular line, he translates it. 00:28:09.80\00:28:11.85 He translates it. 00:28:11.88\00:28:13.57 Otherwise, if I don't get rid of her, 00:28:13.60\00:28:15.95 she is going to end up beating me 00:28:15.98\00:28:17.71 black and blue by her pounding, I like that. 00:28:17.74\00:28:20.75 I see this little widow. 00:28:20.78\00:28:21.82 You see the little widow, tiny little fist, 00:28:21.85\00:28:23.42 and she is coming up that big chest of judge, 00:28:23.45\00:28:25.11 she's pounding, give me justice, give me. 00:28:25.14\00:28:27.30 No. Give me justice. 00:28:27.33\00:28:28.63 No. Give me justice. 00:28:28.66\00:28:30.30 No. Give me justice. 00:28:30.33\00:28:31.71 All right, you can have it. 00:28:31.74\00:28:34.60 She's pound me black and blue. 00:28:34.63\00:28:38.84 Then the Lord said, verse 6, 00:28:38.87\00:28:42.56 "Hear what the unjust judge..." 00:28:42.59\00:28:45.86 By the way, by the way, please note, 00:28:45.89\00:28:48.36 Jesus passes judgment on the judge. 00:28:48.39\00:28:52.22 He is unjust. 00:28:52.25\00:28:54.05 And even in a land like ours and a county like this one, 00:28:54.08\00:28:57.31 there are unjust judges. 00:28:57.34\00:29:01.61 It's just part of the journey. 00:29:01.64\00:29:04.40 "Then the Lord said, 'Hear what the unjust judge said.'" 00:29:04.43\00:29:08.11 Verse 7, "And shall God not avenge His own elect 00:29:08.14\00:29:12.16 who cry out day and night to Him, 00:29:12.19\00:29:14.20 though He bears long with them?" 00:29:14.23\00:29:16.32 Verse 8, "I tell you that He will avenge them speedily." 00:29:16.35\00:29:21.38 Do you know why? 00:29:21.41\00:29:23.34 Because vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord, 00:29:23.37\00:29:27.71 and I will repay. 00:29:27.74\00:29:29.96 That's why. 00:29:29.99\00:29:31.91 Have mercy, there is justice, hallelujah. 00:29:31.94\00:29:35.71 I wish you'd write that down. 00:29:35.74\00:29:37.82 Friend of God, write that down, will you? 00:30:41.28\00:30:43.51 Would you fill it in, that verse, vengeance? 00:30:43.54\00:30:45.78 Write it in, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay." 00:30:45.81\00:30:51.41 Two words you got to write in, says the Lord. 00:30:51.44\00:30:53.42 Where's that coming from? 00:30:53.45\00:30:54.50 Romans 12:19, would you write in 19, 00:30:54.53\00:30:57.01 I think the study guide says 9, it's 19, slip of my finger. 00:30:57.04\00:31:01.99 That's supposed to be 19, so make sure you have 19 there. 00:31:02.02\00:31:04.06 It's quoted, this line is out of Deuteronomy 32:35. 00:31:04.09\00:31:10.68 It's quoted in both Romans 12:19 00:31:10.71\00:31:12.90 and again in Hebrews 10:30, 00:31:12.93\00:31:14.88 so the Old Testament line is embraced by the New Testament. 00:31:14.91\00:31:17.92 "'Vengeance is Mine, 00:31:17.95\00:31:18.98 and I will repay, 'says the Lord." 00:31:19.01\00:31:20.35 Jot it down. Have mercy, there is justice. 00:31:20.38\00:31:24.24 Have mercy, there is justice. 00:31:24.27\00:31:26.02 What's the punch line, 00:31:26.05\00:31:27.09 the secondary punch line of Jesus' parable? 00:31:27.12\00:31:29.04 Keep your pen moving. 00:31:29.07\00:31:30.10 "Shall not God avenge His own.'' 00:31:30.13\00:31:33.01 Who are His own?
