Amen. 00:02:07.29\00:02:08.32 I was reading in Genesis 1 this week, 00:06:49.73\00:06:52.32 knowing that the topic was creation 00:06:52.35\00:06:54.91 and I'm just amazed 00:06:54.94\00:06:58.34 at how God created the earth in six days 00:06:58.37\00:07:01.21 and on the seventh day He rested, 00:07:01.24\00:07:03.32 but throughout all of His creation He says, 00:07:03.35\00:07:06.17 I do all things well. And that's what the song-- 00:07:06.20\00:07:08.96 we're going to teach you a new song, it's called 00:07:08.99\00:07:11.16 "You do all things well." 00:07:11.19\00:07:14.76 And we're going to sing it through once 00:07:14.79\00:07:16.39 and then we're going to ask you to join us 00:07:16.42\00:07:17.89 the second time through. 00:07:17.92\00:07:19.44 Mountain maker 00:07:22.51\00:07:25.04 Ocean tamer 00:07:28.06\00:07:33.08 Glimpses of you Burn in my eyes 00:07:33.11\00:07:38.98 The worship of heaven 00:07:39.01\00:07:42.08 Fills up the skies You made it all 00:07:42.11\00:07:47.94 Said let there be And there was 00:07:47.97\00:07:53.43 All that we see 00:07:53.46\00:07:56.58 The sound of Your voice 00:07:56.61\00:07:59.84 The works of Your hands 00:07:59.87\00:08:03.24 You do all things well 00:08:03.27\00:08:09.05 You do all things well 00:08:09.08\00:08:14.88 You do all things well 00:08:14.91\00:08:19.61 We're going to ask you to join us 00:08:19.64\00:08:21.20 the second time as we sing it. 00:08:21.23\00:08:22.68 Just like a tree that's planted by the water 00:15:09.13\00:15:14.48 I shall not be moved 00:15:14.51\00:15:18.89 The winds are blowing all around me 00:15:18.92\00:15:24.15 I shall not be moved 00:15:24.18\00:15:28.36 Just like a tree that's planted by the water 00:15:28.39\00:15:33.57 I shall not be moved 00:15:33.60\00:15:38.14 The winds are blowing all around me 00:15:38.17\00:15:43.40 I shall not be moved 00:15:43.43\00:15:47.18 These winds will never last 00:15:47.21\00:15:52.37 This storm is sure to pass 00:15:52.40\00:15:57.16 This trial is just a test 00:15:57.19\00:16:01.32 So I shall not 00:16:01.35\00:16:04.91 I shall not No, I shall not 00:16:04.94\00:16:09.28 Be moved 00:16:09.31\00:16:11.30 These winds will never last 00:16:11.53\00:16:16.21 This storm is sure to pass 00:16:16.25\00:16:21.29 This trial is just a test 00:16:21.32\00:16:25.51 So I shall not 00:16:25.54\00:16:29.33 I shall not No, I shall not 00:16:29.36\00:16:33.43 Be moved 00:16:33.46\00:16:35.73 The winds of affliction sweep over my soul 00:16:37.12\00:16:39.56 and billows and storm clouds continue to roll 00:16:39.92\00:16:42.35 The winds of affliction sweep over my soul 00:16:42.56\00:16:45.04 and billows and storm clouds continue to roll 00:16:45.07\00:16:47.88 The winds of affliction sweep over my soul 00:16:47.91\00:16:50.60 and billows and storm clouds continue to roll 00:16:50.63\00:16:53.23 The winds of affliction sweep over my soul 00:16:53.26\00:16:55.98 and billows and storm clouds continue to roll 00:16:56.01\00:16:58.62 I shall not I shall not 00:16:58.65\00:17:03.30 No, I shall not be moved 00:17:03.33\00:17:08.80 I shall not I shall not 00:17:08.83\00:17:13.43 No, I shall not be moved 00:17:13.46\00:17:19.82 Let's pray together. 00:17:23.20\00:17:24.66 Holy Father all of creation has a song, we have a song. 00:17:28.16\00:17:33.51 We wanna sing along. 00:17:34.45\00:17:36.31 We have been much in reflection already, 00:17:39.10\00:17:41.09 regarding You as our Creator. 00:17:48.69\00:17:50.67 What does it mean here and now 00:17:58.04\00:18:00.82 teach us through Holy Scripture 00:18:05.12\00:18:06.72 and may we be the earth children you have called us 00:18:10.17\00:18:13.27 to be in Christ name, amen. 00:18:13.30\00:18:16.28 Did you know that last month Google 00:18:20.80\00:18:23.21 turned black in order to go green? 00:18:23.24\00:18:28.33 Google, everybody knows Google, of course. 00:18:28.36\00:18:31.23 The largest internet search engine on this planet. 00:18:31.26\00:18:34.28 Last month by the way, in the United States 00:18:34.31\00:18:35.97 alone 6.44 billion searches Americans made on Google. 00:18:36.00\00:18:42.58 Anyway last month may be you saw it 00:18:42.61\00:18:44.56 on Google.com homepage this sort of press release 00:18:44.59\00:18:50.56 notice appeared. 00:18:50.59\00:18:53.89 "Google users in the United States will notice today 00:18:53.92\00:18:56.28 that we turn the lights out on the Google.com homepage 00:18:56.31\00:19:00.59 as a gesture to raise awareness of the world wide 00:19:00.62\00:19:03.24 energy conservation effort called "Earth Hour." 00:19:03.27\00:19:06.82 Have you heard about it? 00:19:06.85\00:19:09.96 On Saturday March 29, 00:19:09.99\00:19:13.56 Earth Hour invites people around the world 00:19:13.59\00:19:15.70 to turn off their lights for one hour 00:19:15.73\00:19:17.69 from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM in their local time zone. 00:19:17.72\00:19:20.74 On this day cities around the world including 00:19:20.77\00:19:22.75 Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai and Tel Aviv 00:19:22.78\00:19:26.15 will hold events to acknowledge 00:19:26.18\00:19:27.70 their commitment to energy conservation, 00:19:27.73\00:19:30.54 Given our company's commitment 00:19:30.57\00:19:31.95 to environmental awareness in energy efficiency, 00:19:31.98\00:19:34.03 we strongly support the earth our campaign." 00:19:34.06\00:19:36.99 So on March 29, if you had gone to Google.com, 00:19:37.02\00:19:40.66 this is what you would have seen. 00:19:40.69\00:19:43.86 Google went black in order to go green. 00:19:43.89\00:19:48.43 Green of course being the operative color 00:19:48.46\00:19:50.78 of what Paul Hawkens in his new book, 00:19:50.81\00:19:52.47 "Blessed Unrest" given to me by my friend Dixie Wang, 00:19:52.50\00:19:57.30 but Paul Hawkens calls 00:19:57.33\00:19:58.67 the largest social movement in all of history, 00:19:58.70\00:20:02.07 The Green Movement. 00:20:02.10\00:20:05.16 In honor which today I am wearing this tie 00:20:05.19\00:20:09.62 that does not belong to me. Three weeks ago 00:20:09.65\00:20:12.84 our worship leader Justin Davis was up front, 00:20:12.87\00:20:15.41 I said, "Hey, Justin. In three weeks 00:20:15.44\00:20:16.65 I've got a preach on green, can I borrow your tie?" 00:20:16.68\00:20:20.66 So thank you Justin, very nice. 00:20:20.69\00:20:24.13 We are talking about the Green Movement, 00:20:24.16\00:20:25.40 we are talking about the conservation movement, 00:20:25.43\00:20:26.84 we are talking about earth day ecology, green Google. 00:20:26.87\00:20:33.06 So here's the pressing question. 00:20:33.09\00:20:35.19 Do you suppose we have to be as green as Google? 00:20:35.22\00:20:39.68 The pointed answer is simply we must be greener than Google. 00:20:39.71\00:20:44.45 I want you to open your Bible with me please 00:20:44.48\00:20:46.20 to the greenest story in all of Holy Scripture. 00:20:46.23\00:20:49.83 Back to the very beginning, Genesis 1. 00:20:49.86\00:20:53.21 I want to plunge into this with you, Genesis 1, 00:20:53.24\00:20:55.86 there is no greener chapter in the entire book. 00:20:55.89\00:21:00.57 Genesis 1, we're going to pick it up. 00:21:00.60\00:21:03.90 By the way I need to warn you, 00:21:03.93\00:21:04.97 this story starts green but almost literally 00:21:05.00\00:21:07.65 overnight the story turns brown. 00:21:07.68\00:21:10.41 We'll get the brown story, let's start with a green story. 00:21:10.44\00:21:13.69 Genesis 1, this is in the middle of day six, 00:21:13.72\00:21:17.07 God's creation is almost about to wrap up. 00:21:17.10\00:21:20.97 And when you step into Genesis 1 00:21:21.00\00:21:22.35 as you're finding it here it is, 00:21:22.38\00:21:23.98 it is the greenest and most luxurious global garden 00:21:24.01\00:21:27.06 you can possibly imagine. 00:21:27.09\00:21:30.14 Karen and I love to go to webshots.com. 00:21:30.17\00:21:32.21 Are you acquainted with webshots.com? 00:21:32.24\00:21:34.42 These brilliant color photographs from the world over. 00:21:34.45\00:21:38.30 And you know, you put those on your screen saver. 00:21:38.33\00:21:40.19 You put them on your desktop and ooh, 00:21:40.22\00:21:42.92 and you ah, just as luxury in glory. 00:21:42.95\00:21:46.35 During the Genesis 1, 00:21:46.38\00:21:47.86 and while you and I have witnessed 00:21:47.89\00:21:50.09 spectacular sunsets and sunrises. 00:21:50.12\00:21:54.02 This is almost heart-stopping. 00:21:54.05\00:21:55.83 Take a look at this Genesis 1:26, 00:21:55.86\00:21:57.60 this is almost heart-stopping. 00:21:57.63\00:21:59.24 This first of the green story, Genesis 1:26. 00:21:59.27\00:22:03.05 If you didn't bring a Bible yourself, 00:22:03.08\00:22:05.47 grab our pew Bible, same translation 00:22:05.50\00:22:07.67 in New King James Version. 00:22:07.70\00:22:09.80 I want to move to the end of day six, 00:22:09.83\00:22:11.18 this would be versus 26, Genesis 1:26, page 1, 00:22:11.21\00:22:14.48 of course in your pew Bible. 00:22:14.51\00:22:17.46 Then God said, creation almost over, 00:22:17.49\00:22:22.34 "Let us make man ha-adam, 00:22:22.37\00:22:25.64 from which eventually came the name Adam 00:22:25.67\00:22:28.42 but speaking of humankind, 00:22:28.45\00:22:29.69 "Let us make humankind in our image 00:22:29.72\00:22:32.79 according to our likeness, let them, male and female, 00:22:32.82\00:22:36.92 let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:22:36.95\00:22:39.23 over the birds of the air and over the cattle, 00:22:39.26\00:22:41.73 and over all the earth and over every creeping thing 00:22:41.76\00:22:45.28 that creeps on the earth." 00:22:45.31\00:22:46.46 Verse 27, "So God created ha-adam in His own image, 00:22:46.49\00:22:51.07 In the image of God He created him, 00:22:51.10\00:22:52.78 male and female, He created them, 00:22:52.81\00:22:55.27 them then God blessed them and God said to them, 00:22:55.30\00:22:57.36 'Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue do it, 00:22:57.39\00:23:01.68 have dominion over the fish of the sea, 00:23:01.71\00:23:04.63 over the birds of the air and over every living thing 00:23:04.66\00:23:07.60 that moves on the earth." 00:23:07.63\00:23:09.42 Now I got to tell you that for some people 00:23:09.45\00:23:10.95 there are two very scary verbs tucked away in 00:23:10.98\00:23:13.70 what we've just read. 00:23:13.73\00:23:14.76 Verb 1, have dominion and verb 2, subdue. 00:23:14.79\00:23:19.08 It's almost as if, I mean you could get this sets 00:23:19.11\00:23:22.26 that God has somehow granting 00:23:22.29\00:23:23.90 to the human race a despotic rule, 00:23:23.93\00:23:26.69 sort of a carte blanche permission 00:23:26.72\00:23:30.97 for unbridled exploitation of nature and her resources. 00:23:31.00\00:23:35.47 We could make that conclusion with those two verbs, 00:23:35.50\00:23:38.17 were it not for two more verbs quickly inserted 00:23:38.20\00:23:40.99 into the very green chapter two. 00:23:41.02\00:23:42.85 You go to read the two chapters together. 00:23:42.88\00:23:44.22 So two more verbs, green chapter two, 00:23:44.25\00:23:47.73 go to--drop down to verse 15, 00:23:47.76\00:23:50.25 "Then the Lord God took the man 00:23:50.28\00:23:53.31 and put him in the garden of Eden to tend," 00:23:53.34\00:23:55.97 here comes the two verbs, "to tend and keep it." 00:23:56.00\00:24:00.49 Now that's 1 Hebrew, abide, it means to tend. 00:24:00.52\00:24:04.00 You can translate it to till, but something fascinating 00:24:04.03\00:24:06.62 about that Hebrew word is that the verb 00:24:06.65\00:24:09.37 is very similar to the noun, 00:24:09.40\00:24:10.44 so abide is very similar to abed. 00:24:10.47\00:24:13.44 And you find abed, listen to this, guys, 00:24:13.47\00:24:15.32 the very last occurrence of the Book of Genesis, 00:24:15.35\00:24:17.33 you remember, Joseph's brothers sold him 00:24:17.36\00:24:20.81 in the slavery 18-- 12 years later, 12 years later. 00:24:20.84\00:24:27.96 19 years later, I'm sorry 19 years later. 00:24:27.99\00:24:30.75 Those brothers are gathered in Joseph's presence, 00:24:30.78\00:24:32.89 so we all know the story of how he introduces himself to them. 00:24:32.92\00:24:38.56 And in that moment when they fall to the earth, 00:24:38.59\00:24:41.37 they cry out the words in Genesis 50, 00:24:41.40\00:24:44.24 "We will be your servants forever." 00:24:44.27\00:24:48.40 The word servants and the word to tend are identical, 00:24:48.43\00:24:52.65 same writ, meaning that when God speaks in Genesis 2 00:24:52.68\00:24:57.82 of tending the garden, 00:24:57.85\00:24:58.94 He is describing serving the earth. 00:24:58.97\00:25:03.45 Now hold on, you'd say how this fits that second verb. 00:25:03.48\00:25:06.72 Read verse 15 again. 00:25:06.75\00:25:07.81 "Then the Lord took the man and He put them 00:25:07.84\00:25:09.43 in the garden of Eden to tend," and what's the second verb? 00:25:09.46\00:25:12.73 "To keep it." 00:25:12.76\00:25:13.98 The Hebrew word for keep is Shamar. 00:25:14.01\00:25:16.29 Now when we were boys, 00:25:16.32\00:25:17.35 my mother had us memorized the 121 Psalm. 00:25:17.38\00:25:22.14 We often repeated the 121 Psalm 00:25:22.17\00:25:24.55 at the beginning of the Sabbath at sundown. 00:25:24.58\00:25:27.34 I want to show you something very fascinating 00:25:27.37\00:25:30.22 about this word Shamar, as it appears in Psalm 121. 00:25:30.25\00:25:32.86 Hold your finger right there in Genesis 1. 00:25:32.89\00:25:34.46 Finds the 121 Psalm, Psalm 121, look at this. 00:25:34.49\00:25:41.76 What does that word Shamar mean? "I am naked." 00:31:11.44\00:31:12.80 "How do you know you are naked? 00:31:12.83\00:31:14.58 Did you eat of that tree? Ah, you pulled the lever." 00:31:14.61\00:31:18.77 Ladies and gentlemen, 00:31:18.80\00:31:19.83 there are four consequences to the human fall, 00:31:19.86\00:31:22.69 and I want you to get this down in your study guide please. 00:31:22.72\00:31:24.49 Four consequences, number one. 00:31:24.52\00:31:26.17 As God begins to talk to them He says, 00:31:26.20\00:31:28.70 "Hey, serpent, I want to tell you something. 00:31:28.73\00:31:29.87 You are going to be forever changed." 00:31:29.90\00:31:31.36 Consequence number one, 00:31:31.39\00:31:32.87 is that animal life on this planet is affected, 00:31:32.90\00:31:35.60 the serpent, all of animal life is affected. 00:31:35.63\00:31:39.53 Number two, God looks at the serpent, 00:31:39.56\00:31:41.53 He says, "You know what, the woman's going to have 00:31:41.56\00:31:43.08 a baby one day and that seed, I am going to create enmity 00:31:43.11\00:31:46.56 between you and the human race, that the entire human life 00:31:46.59\00:31:50.07 is affected on this planet." That's consequence two. 00:31:50.10\00:31:52.39 Consequence number three. God comes to Eve and He says, 00:31:52.42\00:31:54.98 "Eve, you are going to still have babies 00:31:55.01\00:31:56.79 but it is going to be an awful pain. 00:31:56.82\00:31:58.51 You're going to bare in pain and labor 00:31:58.54\00:32:01.46 to bring forth that child." 00:32:01.49\00:32:02.56 And then God comes to Adam and He says, 00:32:02.59\00:32:04.20 "Adam, I got to tell you, the whole creation, 00:32:04.23\00:32:07.27 all of creation will be affected because of your decision." 00:32:07.30\00:32:11.88 In fact, I want you to read this, 00:32:11.91\00:32:13.23 verse 17, in this tragic brown story. 00:32:13.26\00:32:16.15 Verse 17, Genesis 3:17, "Then to Adam, 00:32:16.18\00:32:19.09 God said, this is the Creator, 00:32:19.12\00:32:20.30 this is the pre incarnate Christ. 00:32:20.33\00:32:22.12 He says to Adam, 'Because you have heeded 00:32:22.15\00:32:23.92 the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree 00:32:23.95\00:32:25.97 of which I commanded you saying, 00:32:26.00\00:32:27.67 "You shall not eat of it." 00:32:27.70\00:32:29.18 Cursed is the ground for your sake. 00:32:29.21\00:32:32.20 In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. 00:32:32.23\00:32:34.74 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you. 00:32:34.77\00:32:37.95 And you shall eat the herb of the field." 00:32:37.98\00:32:39.37 And verse 19, "In the sweat of your face 00:32:39.40\00:32:41.29 you shall eat till you return to the ground for out of it 00:32:41.32\00:32:43.88 you were taken, for dust you are and to dust you shall return." 00:32:43.92\00:32:48.03 It is brown from here on out. 00:32:48.06\00:32:50.84 You are brown now. You go back to the earth. 00:32:50.87\00:32:55.42 And what's the brown story? 00:32:55.45\00:32:56.80 Ladies and gentlemen, the brown story is simply 00:32:56.83\00:32:58.38 that as a consequence of our rebellion against the Creator. 00:32:58.41\00:33:04.90 And by the way the brown story 00:33:04.93\00:33:06.06 is what the green movement does not tell. 00:33:06.09\00:33:08.67 They either don't know or don't believe it 00:33:08.70\00:33:11.43 but it is the brown story that tells us 00:33:11.46\00:33:13.09 as a consequence of usurping our divinely 00:33:13.13\00:33:18.96 ordained dominion on this planet allowing it 00:33:18.99\00:33:24.30 to be usurped by the fallen angel Lucifer, 00:33:24.33\00:33:28.67 by voting to choose his side over God side. 00:33:28.70\00:33:34.51 It is the brown story of an entire creation 00:33:34.54\00:33:38.53 that is plunged into the heartache. 00:33:38.56\00:33:43.85 The green movement does not tell the brown story. 00:33:43.88\00:33:46.34 You and I must recognize, we live with that brown story. 00:33:46.37\00:33:50.28 In fact the New Testament even more powerfully 00:33:50.31\00:33:53.45 than Genesis 3 in a very succinct way 00:33:53.48\00:33:56.81 tells the from green to brown story. 00:33:56.84\00:33:58.99 Go to the Book of Romans, our last text 00:33:59.02\00:34:01.23 we will look up together, Romans 8. 00:34:01.26\00:34:04.20 I want to reflect with you. I want to reflect the meaning 00:34:07.14\00:34:09.34 of the third millennia survivors that we are. 00:34:09.37\00:34:11.84 How do we relate to the movement, 00:34:11.87\00:34:18.18 the largest social movement in the history of earth 00:34:18.21\00:34:20.37 as Paul Hawkens calls it. 00:34:20.40\00:34:22.76 Romans 8:19, drop down to verse 19. 00:34:22.79\00:34:27.69 By the way this is page 761 in your pew Bible. 00:34:27.72\00:34:32.24 "For the earnest expectations of the creation," 00:34:32.27\00:34:34.81 you're going to see those two words, 00:34:34.84\00:34:36.04 the creation, four times, that little couplet. 00:34:36.07\00:34:37.85 "For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly 00:34:37.88\00:34:41.30 waits for the revealing of the sons of God." 00:34:41.33\00:34:43.81 Something has gone horribly wrong in creation 00:34:43.84\00:34:45.83 and all of creation awaits that the word that the Paul 00:34:45.86\00:34:49.29 uses there is apocalypses. 00:34:49.32\00:34:50.55 It waits for the apocalypse. 00:34:50.58\00:34:52.49 It waits for the wrapping up of this 00:34:52.52\00:34:55.35 tragedy experiment in rebellion. 00:34:55.38\00:34:57.32 "For the earnest expectations of the creation 00:34:57.35\00:34:58.83 eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God," 00:34:58.86\00:35:01.18 Verse 20, "For the creation 00:35:01.21\00:35:02.95 was subjected to futility, not willingly." 00:35:02.98\00:35:06.81 Nature itself had no choice in the brown story. 00:35:06.84\00:35:11.75 The choice was made by the human race 00:35:11.78\00:35:13.44 and as a consequence all the creation is thrown 00:35:13.47\00:35:17.79 into this horrible dysfunction. 00:35:17.82\00:35:22.48 Verse 20, "For the creation was subjected to futility, 00:35:22.51\00:35:24.72 not willingly, but because of Him 00:35:24.75\00:35:26.19 who subjected it in hope." 00:35:26.22\00:35:27.56 God didn't say, "Okay, nature, 00:35:27.59\00:35:29.13 I am going to kill you now because Adam and Eve said, 00:35:29.16\00:35:31.21 no, no, no, no." He said, "I am awfully sorry to do this. 00:35:31.24\00:35:32.97 I am awfully sorry that the entire ecosystem 00:35:33.00\00:35:35.68 now will be plunged into brown." 00:35:35.71\00:35:38.26 Why did God do it because, verse 21, 00:35:41.18\00:35:42.87 "Because the creation itself also will be delivered one day 00:35:42.90\00:35:47.11 from the bondage of corruption 00:35:47.14\00:35:48.20 into the glorious liberty of the children of God." 00:35:48.23\00:35:50.20 Here comes the summation, 00:35:50.23\00:35:52.01 "For we know that the whole creation, 00:35:52.04\00:35:54.94 the entire earth, all of nature groans and labors 00:35:54.97\00:35:59.42 with child pangs together until now." 00:35:59.45\00:36:01.84 Jot it down ladies and gentlemen, 00:36:01.88\00:36:03.47 "There is no more succinct and emotive a retelling 00:36:03.50\00:36:06.56 of the green to brown story than this. 00:36:06.59\00:36:09.28 The whole creation groans. 00:36:09.31\00:36:15.25 We were in Kenya at the Masai Mara couple of months ago, 00:36:15.28\00:36:18.90 this huge wild kingdom 00:36:18.93\00:36:23.11 and I took this picture of a lioness 00:36:23.14\00:36:24.76 that had just filled a gazelle. 00:36:24.79\00:36:29.49 Take a look at that picture, ladies and gentleman, 00:36:29.52\00:36:30.98 that's the brown story. That's all creation groaning. 00:36:31.01\00:36:37.13 Do you think that gazelle shows this consequence? 00:36:37.16\00:36:44.06 Creation has not sinned, creation cannot be faulted. 00:36:44.09\00:36:49.25 It got sucked into the brown story 00:36:49.28\00:36:53.44 because of our choice. 00:36:53.47\00:36:56.88 All creation, the whole creation groans, longing for redemption. 00:36:56.91\00:37:04.19 Oh, good, so let's just wait then. 00:37:04.22\00:37:05.47 Let's just wait till Christ comes 00:37:05.50\00:37:07.11 and then we get green again for ever and ever, amen. 00:37:07.14\00:37:10.30 Wrong, wrong. I want you to listen for a moment 00:37:10.33\00:37:14.20 to one of the most articulate voices in the green movement. 00:37:14.23\00:37:16.38 He is Harvard scientist, Edward Wilson, 00:37:16.41\00:37:18.51 hailed by Time Magazine 00:37:18.54\00:37:19.61 as one of the world's greatest naturalists. 00:37:19.64\00:37:23.19 My son Kirk as we were flying off to Africa, 00:37:23.22\00:37:27.60 he said, "Dad, you got to read this. 00:37:27.63\00:37:28.96 You just got to read this book." 00:37:28.99\00:37:31.25 It's E.O. Wilson's book, new book, 00:37:31.28\00:37:32.84 The Creation, an appeal to save life on earth. 00:37:32.87\00:37:35.03 Now, Kirk is in environment studies, 00:37:35.06\00:37:37.20 major, double major with communications 00:37:37.23\00:37:38.94 and so he's working for Dennis Woodland, 00:37:38.97\00:37:40.63 the resident scientist and botanist on this campus. 00:37:40.66\00:37:44.96 And so Kirk said, "Dad, read it." 00:37:44.99\00:37:47.46 Now, I did, look at this, atheist scientist. 00:37:47.49\00:37:51.04 And here's how the whole-- here's how the book is set up. 00:37:51.07\00:37:52.88 He is writing to an imaginary pastor. 00:37:52.91\00:37:58.54 And the whole book is his passionate appeal to Christians. 00:37:58.57\00:38:03.59 Here's how it begins, "Dear Pastor we have not met, 00:38:03.62\00:38:06.86 yet I feel I know you well enough to call you friend. 00:38:06.89\00:38:09.36 First of all, we grew up in the same faith. 00:38:09.39\00:38:10.97 As a boy I too answered the altar call, 00:38:11.00\00:38:13.41 I went under the water." 00:38:13.44\00:38:14.47 He was a Baptist, he grew up a Baptist. 00:38:14.50\00:38:16.51 "I went under the water, 00:38:16.54\00:38:17.57 although I no longer belong to that faith, 00:38:17.60\00:38:19.23 I am confident that if we met 00:38:19.26\00:38:20.92 and spoke privately of our deepest beliefs, 00:38:20.95\00:38:23.04 it would be in a spirit of mutual respect and good will. 00:38:23.07\00:38:26.52 I write to you now for your counsel and help. 00:38:26.55\00:38:29.99 Of course, in doing so, I see no way to avoid 00:38:30.02\00:38:32.16 the fundamental differences in our respective worldviews. 00:38:32.19\00:38:34.57 You are a literalist interpreter of Christian Holy Scripture. 00:38:34.60\00:38:38.00 You reject the conclusion of science 00:38:38.03\00:38:39.85 that mankind evolved from lower forms. 00:38:39.89\00:38:41.88 I am a secular humanist 00:38:41.91\00:38:43.52 which is kind of a euphemism for atheists. 00:38:43.55\00:38:46.00 I think existence is what we make of it as individuals. 00:38:46.03\00:38:48.43 There is no guarantee of life after death, 00:38:48.46\00:38:50.61 and heaven and hell are what we create 00:38:50.64\00:38:52.32 for ourselves on this planet. 00:38:52.35\00:38:53.63 There is no other home. Humanity originated here 00:38:53.66\00:38:56.35 by evolution from lower forms over millions of years. 00:38:56.38\00:38:59.16 And yes, I will speak plain, our ancestors 00:38:59.20\00:39:01.63 were apelike animals, preacher. 00:39:01.66\00:39:06.45 For you, the glory of an unseen divinity; 00:39:06.48\00:39:08.46 for me the glory of the universe revealed at last. 00:39:08.49\00:39:10.73 You have found your final truth, I am still searching. 00:39:10.76\00:39:13.27 I may be wrong, you may be wrong. 00:39:13.30\00:39:14.49 We may both be partly right. 00:39:14.52\00:39:18.47 I put it this way because you have the power 00:39:18.50\00:39:21.96 to help solve a great problem about which I care deeply. 00:39:21.99\00:39:24.91 I hope you have the same concern. 00:39:24.94\00:39:26.25 I suggest that we set aside our differences 00:39:26.28\00:39:28.25 in order to save the Creation." 00:39:28.28\00:39:29.78 And Creation, all through the book is capital C. 00:39:29.81\00:39:31.92 "The defense of living nature is a universal value. 00:39:31.95\00:39:34.62 It doesn't arise from, nor does it promote 00:39:34.65\00:39:36.65 any religious or ideological dogma. 00:39:36.68\00:39:38.57 Rather, it serves without discrimination 00:39:38.60\00:39:40.93 the interests of all humanity." 00:39:40.96\00:39:42.33 And now, take your study guide 00:39:42.36\00:39:43.64 because I am going to pick it up right 00:39:43.67\00:39:45.22 what you have in your study guide. 00:39:45.25\00:39:46.29 "Pastor, we need your help. 00:39:46.32\00:39:50.41 The Creation-living Nature is in deep trouble. 00:39:50.44\00:39:53.25 Scientists estimate that if habitat conversion 00:39:53.28\00:39:55.82 and other destructive human activities 00:39:55.85\00:39:57.87 continue at their present rates," 00:39:57.90\00:39:59.91 write this down, 00:39:59.94\00:40:00.97 "Half the species of plants and animals on earth 00:40:01.00\00:40:03.50 could be either gone or at least fated for early extinction 00:40:03.53\00:40:06.73 by the end of the century. 00:40:06.76\00:40:08.60 A full quarter, jot that down. 00:40:11.09\00:40:12.73 A full quarter will drop to this level during 00:40:12.76\00:40:14.39 the next half century as a result of climate change alone. 00:40:14.42\00:40:17.13 The ongoing extinction rate is calculated 00:40:17.16\00:40:19.52 in the most conservative estimates to be about 00:40:19.55\00:40:21.60 a hundred times above that prevailing 00:40:21.63\00:40:23.94 before humans appeared on Earth, 00:40:23.97\00:40:25.05 we would say since the fall 00:40:25.08\00:40:26.81 the extinction rate is hundred times more than 00:40:26.84\00:40:30.38 it was in the beginning and it is expected to rise 00:40:30.42\00:40:33.36 at least a thousand times greater or more 00:40:33.39\00:40:36.60 in the next few decades. 00:40:36.63\00:40:37.85 If this rise continues unabated, the cost to humanity, 00:40:37.88\00:40:41.28 in wealth, environmental security, 00:40:41.31\00:40:42.72 and quality of life, will be catastrophic, catastrophic." 00:40:42.75\00:40:48.61 So write this atheist scientist. 00:40:48.64\00:40:52.76 "You may well ask at this point," 00:40:52.79\00:40:54.28 let me just keep reading a couple of more lines. 00:40:54.31\00:40:56.03 "Why me? Because religion and science 00:40:56.06\00:40:58.58 are the two most powerful forces in the world today, 00:40:58.61\00:41:00.75 including especially the United States. 00:41:00.78\00:41:02.46 If religion and science could be united 00:41:02.49\00:41:04.75 on the common ground of biological conservation, 00:41:04.78\00:41:07.15 the problem would soon be solved." 00:41:07.18\00:41:10.15 Now listen to this, "I am puzzled 00:41:10.18\00:41:11.57 that so many religious leaders, who spiritually represent 00:41:11.60\00:41:14.02 a large majority of people around the world, 00:41:14.05\00:41:15.62 have hesitated to make protection of the Creation 00:41:15.65\00:41:18.80 an important part of their magisterium." 00:41:18.84\00:41:21.04 Hold on, "Even more perplexing, now listen, 00:41:21.07\00:41:24.70 is the widespread conviction among Christians 00:41:24.73\00:41:26.75 that the Second Coming is imminent," sound familiar? 00:41:26.78\00:41:30.20 "That the Second Coming is imminent 00:41:30.23\00:41:31.52 and that therefore the condition of the planet 00:41:31.55\00:41:33.49 is of little consequence. For those who believe 00:41:33.52\00:41:36.92 this form of Christianity, the fate of ten million 00:41:36.95\00:41:39.28 other life forms indeed does not matter. 00:41:39.31\00:41:41.69 Pastor, tell me I am wrong." Is he wrong? 00:41:41.72\00:41:48.11 Is he wrong about us as a community of faith in learning? 00:41:48.14\00:41:52.26 Is he wrong about us who have this passionate 00:41:52.29\00:41:55.13 hope that Jesus is coming soon 00:41:55.16\00:41:56.48 and because of that hope is he right? 00:41:56.51\00:41:59.73 And in fact, who cares whether we trash the earth or not, 00:41:59.76\00:42:03.31 it's almost over. Is he wrong? 00:42:03.34\00:42:08.19 I tell you what if E.O. Wilson were here today, 00:42:08.22\00:42:10.38 I like to write him a letter back. 00:42:10.41\00:42:11.78 If he were today, here's what I will do. 00:42:11.81\00:42:13.24 Since he call me by my first name, 00:42:13.27\00:42:14.60 I will call him by his first name, 00:42:14.63\00:42:16.27 "Dear, Professor, yes it is true, yes it is true. 00:42:16.30\00:42:22.29 So here's my letter to E.O. Wilson, all right. 00:42:22.32\00:42:24.62 "Yes it is true, we are Adventists 00:42:24.65\00:42:27.14 and we believe that Christ is soon to return to this planet. 00:42:27.17\00:42:30.58 Nevertheless we reject the notion 00:42:30.61\00:42:32.69 that the creation is no longer of any concern to us, 00:42:32.72\00:42:35.34 for we are not simply little a Adventists, 00:42:35.37\00:42:37.96 a hope shared by Christians everywhere. 00:42:37.99\00:42:39.65 No, we are Seventh-day Adventists 00:42:39.68\00:42:43.73 which means that ideally we should choose 00:42:43.76\00:42:46.16 to live our lives by the following four credos." 00:42:46.19\00:42:49.87 Would you write these down in your study guide please. 00:42:49.90\00:42:51.81 Number one, "We are not products of nature's-- 00:42:51.84\00:42:55.29 of natural selections random chance 00:42:55.32\00:42:58.07 but we are the creation 00:42:58.10\00:42:59.13 of a loving and intelligent Creator." 00:42:59.16\00:43:01.64 Write that in. Number two, 00:43:01.67\00:43:05.60 "As a memorial of His creation, 00:43:05.63\00:43:07.22 God gave to the human race the seventh-day Sabbath, 00:43:07.25\00:43:10.64 a day in which we rest in His friendship 00:43:10.67\00:43:12.45 and celebrate His handiwork." 00:43:12.48\00:43:15.69 Write that in. You say, "Pastor, 00:50:59.43\00:51:02.19 I see that you're driving a little blazer SUV." 00:51:02.22\00:51:06.17 Yeah, but its 1996, gives awful gas mileage, 00:51:06.20\00:51:11.46 I am telling you the truth, 14 miles per gallon. 00:51:11.49\00:51:15.13 Yeah. Look at that, go green, shower less. 00:51:42.20\00:51:45.62 Now that's not Ashley, that's kind of slipped in, 00:51:48.24\00:51:50.23 I don't know how that got in there. 00:51:50.26\00:51:52.34 Shower well but shower shorter, that's the point, all right. 00:51:52.37\00:51:55.37 Number five, number five, recycle it. 00:51:55.40\00:51:58.16 Write it down, recycle it. 00:51:58.19\00:51:59.42 The environmental protection agency estimates 00:51:59.45\00:52:02.02 that each of us produces 4.5 pounds 00:52:02.05\00:52:05.27 of trash everyday. 00:52:05.30\00:52:08.64 Now, there's been a big-faculty send me their, 00:52:08.67\00:52:11.27 some of their emails, so there's been quite 00:52:11.30\00:52:12.98 a discussion on campus over the last two weeks 00:52:13.01\00:52:15.15 about recycling on this campus 00:52:15.18\00:52:16.83 and I'm not going to get into the thick of that. 00:52:16.86\00:52:18.18 I do believe our provost has heard the conversation 00:52:18.21\00:52:20.56 and is acting to respond. 00:52:20.59\00:52:21.75 Ladies and gentleman, we've got to recycle. 00:52:21.78\00:52:23.79 We recycle here at the church, you these bulletins 00:52:23.82\00:52:25.61 that you lovingly leave behind when you exit this church. 00:52:25.64\00:52:30.52 We take all of that, all goes to recycling, 00:52:30.55\00:52:32.35 recycle, recycle.
