Salvation. 00:07:41.04\00:07:42.77 The gospel to me means His unfathomable love. 00:07:42.80\00:07:46.61 The gospel to me is a gift. 00:07:46.64\00:07:50.23 The gospel to me means Joy. 00:07:50.26\00:07:52.56 The gospel to me means love. 00:07:52.59\00:07:55.14 The gospel to me is a solution from everyday's struggles. 00:07:55.17\00:07:59.83 The gospel means to me that there is a hope for my future. 00:07:59.86\00:08:03.11 To me a gospel I said, 00:08:03.14\00:08:04.55 a think that makes people change. 00:08:04.58\00:08:09.36 To me the gospel means 00:08:09.39\00:08:12.13 evaluating my own life and giving up 00:08:12.16\00:08:15.83 something in mind to replace over something 00:08:15.86\00:08:19.25 that God tells me to replace with. 00:08:19.28\00:08:22.26 To me the gospel means the reassurance of my faith. 00:08:22.29\00:08:26.08 To me the gospel makes me realize 00:08:26.11\00:08:29.07 how unworthy I'm at salvation. 00:08:29.10\00:08:31.56 And just knowing that God care so much about my life is 00:08:31.59\00:08:37.53 it just truly sets me free and we ritually guides us. 00:08:37.56\00:08:42.41 The gospel is we hope to see 00:08:42.44\00:08:43.60 family members and loved ones that I've lost. 00:08:43.63\00:08:46.89 Gospel to me the literal transition of the word 00:08:46.92\00:08:49.13 gospel is good news. 00:08:49.16\00:08:50.46 So the only thing I think about 00:08:50.49\00:08:52.82 when I think of the phrase good news is Jesus Christ. 00:08:52.85\00:08:55.83 The gospel means peace to me, 00:08:55.86\00:08:59.64 I just think about the gift of the friendship of Jesus Christ 00:08:59.67\00:09:06.21 and it just overwhelmed from the peace knowing that 00:09:06.24\00:09:09.77 even if all else fails 00:09:09.80\00:09:11.35 if nobody is here for me today or tomorrow, 00:09:11.38\00:09:15.17 I have Jesus and that's peace. 00:09:15.20\00:09:18.16 So what's the gospel mean to you? 00:09:32.30\00:09:34.88 If they put a camera in your face and asked you, 00:09:34.91\00:09:39.79 how would you respond? 00:09:39.82\00:09:41.69 What is the gospel to this generation? 00:09:41.72\00:09:46.81 I hope that by the time this teaching is through, 00:09:46.84\00:09:50.85 you will know the answer. 00:09:50.88\00:09:51.91 Let's pray. 00:09:51.94\00:09:53.31 Oh, God. 00:09:53.34\00:09:55.57 Gospel means good news, we know that much 00:09:55.60\00:09:58.59 but what so good about the good news? 00:09:58.62\00:10:02.51 What would you say to us through holy scripture? 00:10:02.54\00:10:06.91 What would you tuck deep within our minds, our spirits, 00:10:06.94\00:10:09.49 our souls, so that when you-- 00:10:09.52\00:10:11.08 when we hurry out of this sanctuary 00:10:11.11\00:10:16.06 into the world that awaits us, 00:10:16.09\00:10:17.30 the good news goes with us, make it clear please. 00:10:17.33\00:10:21.26 For Jesus glory in His name, we pray, amen. 00:10:21.29\00:10:26.16 One of the most provocative paintings for me, 00:10:26.19\00:10:29.04 I can't talk for you, I'm not an art critics 00:10:29.07\00:10:31.71 so don't come up to me afterwards. 00:10:31.74\00:10:33.76 One of the most provocative paintings for me 00:10:33.79\00:10:36.44 from the day Jesus was crucified, all right, 00:10:36.47\00:10:40.31 is the oil canvas work of the 19th-century 00:10:40.34\00:10:45.88 Italian artist named, Antonio Ciseri. 00:10:45.91\00:10:50.93 The title of the painting "Ecce Homo." 00:10:50.96\00:10:54.02 It means behold the man. 00:10:54.05\00:10:56.44 I'll put it on the screen for you in just a minute 00:10:56.47\00:10:58.23 but I have so moved by this painting, 00:10:58.26\00:11:00.36 I really this is a special painting to me, 00:11:00.39\00:11:02.23 I put it as I was writing this week 00:11:02.26\00:11:04.52 I put it as the desktop for my laptop 00:11:04.55\00:11:07.91 just so can I see it watch that picture. 00:11:07.94\00:11:13.34 Ciseri, 19th-century is known 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.84 for his almost photographic effect, 00:11:15.87\00:11:19.41 it looks like a photograph, 00:11:19.44\00:11:20.79 take a look we put it on the screen right now 00:11:20.82\00:11:22.50 Ecce Homo, there it is. 00:11:22.53\00:11:24.91 How many here seeing this picture before? 00:11:24.94\00:11:26.20 Come on, you seen it, haven't you? Yeah. 00:11:26.23\00:11:28.13 Ecce Homo, Latin behold the man there in 00:11:28.16\00:11:32.94 Pilate's praetorian residence, the governor has pulled away 00:11:32.97\00:11:39.71 from his throne of judgment, 00:11:39.74\00:11:41.09 he's standing leaning over the banister 00:11:41.12\00:11:43.00 above the rocastin of the rabble 00:11:43.03\00:11:48.00 who are screaming for the blood of this prisoner. 00:11:48.03\00:11:51.67 Pilate points back at Jesus, 00:11:51.70\00:11:53.25 you see Jesus striped to the waist crown of thorns. 00:11:53.28\00:11:57.53 If you could see with clarity like my laptop screen 00:11:57.56\00:12:00.84 you would see his eyes are looking down, 00:12:00.87\00:12:02.18 He's not looking at anybody, 00:12:02.21\00:12:03.24 He's just looking down as if lost in thought. 00:12:03.27\00:12:06.95 Pilate is framed by a centurion, 00:12:06.98\00:12:09.42 you see the execution, 00:12:09.45\00:12:10.48 he has the scourge or the flagram in his hand. 00:12:10.51\00:12:14.21 I think that's probably 00:12:14.24\00:12:15.84 Mrs. Pilate in one of her attendees 00:12:15.87\00:12:17.87 and then some minor government officials, 00:12:17.90\00:12:19.89 that's the judgment scene. 00:12:19.92\00:12:22.70 No where is that judgment scene were finely nuanced 00:12:22.73\00:12:28.08 then the gospel of John, 00:12:28.11\00:12:29.83 the fourth gospel our theme book 00:12:29.86\00:12:32.71 and in three weeks it's all over, 00:12:32.74\00:12:34.34 this is three Sabbaths coming today. 00:12:34.37\00:12:36.80 I want to go back to that moment, 00:12:36.83\00:12:38.11 I want to go to Pilate's judgment hall. 00:12:38.14\00:12:41.14 And so without any further we do. 00:12:41.17\00:12:43.21 What is the gospel mean to me? 00:12:43.24\00:12:44.37 Let's find out John Chapter 19, open your Bible, 00:12:44.40\00:12:47.31 you didn't bring your Bible we'll put it on the screen 00:12:47.34\00:12:49.04 for you wind symphony, and by the way I'll tell you there is no other worship place 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.65 where you can have this many musicians, 00:13:01.68\00:13:04.61 minister the way you did, thank you 00:13:04.64\00:13:06.33 Allan Mitchell, very much, bless you. 00:13:06.36\00:13:10.30 All right, so if you don't bring your, 00:13:10.33\00:13:11.39 can't read your Bible, you can see on it 00:13:11.42\00:13:13.03 look at the monitor up there 00:13:13.06\00:13:14.17 and on the pew as well. 00:13:14.20\00:13:17.67 Okay, enough talking. 00:13:17.70\00:13:18.73 John 18, we'll pick it up John 18. 00:13:18.76\00:13:20.69 I'm in the New Revised Standard version. 00:13:20.72\00:13:22.55 This is the most significant narrative 00:13:22.58\00:13:23.97 in the history of the universe. 00:13:24.00\00:13:25.37 So if you didn't bring your Bible, 00:13:25.40\00:13:26.67 do yourself the favor 00:13:26.70\00:13:27.86 of pulling the pew Bible out in front of you. 00:13:27.89\00:13:29.71 I'll give you the page number, 00:13:29.74\00:13:30.77 you've got to track this, page 729, John 18. 00:13:30.80\00:13:35.62 John 18:28, "Then," okay, Peter is just deny Jesus, 00:13:35.65\00:13:39.47 the last time you and I are together 00:13:39.50\00:13:41.52 two Sabbaths ago. 00:13:41.55\00:13:43.94 "Then," after Peter's denial, 00:13:43.97\00:13:47.12 "They," this is the Judean aristocracy. 00:13:47.15\00:13:51.19 "They led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium," 00:13:51.22\00:13:54.97 Pilate sermon residence. 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.43 "And it was early morning. 00:13:57.46\00:13:59.16 But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, 00:13:59.19\00:14:02.00 lest they should be defiled, 00:14:02.03\00:14:04.22 but that they might eat the Passover." 00:14:04.25\00:14:06.84 I tell you what the scrupulous duplicity of Jerusalem's elite 00:14:06.87\00:14:11.86 is almost breathtaking, you can't believe it. 00:14:11.89\00:14:15.50 They're-- here they are illegally railroading 00:14:15.53\00:14:18.15 an innocent man to his death and they know it. 00:14:18.18\00:14:21.83 And yet they hypocritically pretend, obedience 00:14:21.86\00:14:24.13 to divine law and moral purity 00:14:24.16\00:14:26.14 when they are more guilty than the pagan governor 00:14:26.17\00:14:29.00 to whom they've just deliver Jesus. 00:14:29.03\00:14:30.76 They fear ritual contamination 00:14:30.79\00:14:33.35 when they are plagued with moral rot. 00:14:33.38\00:14:37.45 Verse 29. 00:14:37.48\00:14:39.04 "Pilate," catering to there insensibilities 00:14:39.07\00:14:43.42 comes out to them verse 29, 00:14:43.45\00:14:44.77 "And Pilate went out to them and said, 00:14:44.80\00:14:46.11 What accusation do you bring about this man?"' 00:14:46.14\00:14:51.90 They come with this nifty little well, governor 00:14:51.93\00:14:53.95 we wouldn't be here 00:14:53.98\00:14:55.31 if he wasn't worthy of your action. 00:14:55.34\00:14:58.09 Pilate steps back and you've got courts 00:14:58.12\00:15:00.12 taken him to your own system. 00:15:00.15\00:15:02.00 Now the crafty-- have to acknowledge 00:15:02.03\00:15:05.18 that they are subjugated people and they remind him, 00:15:05.21\00:15:07.21 "Listen we cannot execute capital punishment. 00:15:07.24\00:15:10.48 So we brought him to you." 00:15:10.51\00:15:12.69 Bring the prisoner in. 00:15:12.72\00:15:14.98 Sits inside the praetorium, Jesus bound, 00:15:15.01\00:15:18.50 no longer gag before him. 00:15:18.53\00:15:21.49 Are you the king of the Jews? 00:15:21.52\00:15:24.06 Now they say that's the charge. 00:15:24.09\00:15:26.29 Are you the king of the Jews? 00:15:26.32\00:15:28.61 Jesus looks into the governor's eyes. 00:15:28.64\00:15:30.68 Are you asking that of yourself? 00:15:30.71\00:15:32.61 Or have others said that of me? 00:15:32.64\00:15:37.18 Your leaders, your nation brought you to me. 00:15:37.21\00:15:41.49 And the king is not of this world. 00:15:41.52\00:15:44.77 If our king were of this world, my followers will fight. 00:15:44.80\00:15:47.52 Oh, you are a king then. 00:15:47.55\00:15:50.57 And Jesus replies, this is what verse 37 00:15:50.60\00:15:53.78 "Jesus answered, 00:15:53.81\00:15:55.24 'you say rightly that I am a king. 00:15:55.27\00:15:58.81 For this cause I was born, 00:15:58.84\00:16:00.01 and for this cause I have come into the world 00:16:00.04\00:16:02.20 that I should bear witness to the truth. 00:16:02.23\00:16:04.00 Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.' 00:16:04.03\00:16:06.91 Verse 38 and "Pilate said to him, 00:16:06.94\00:16:09.87 "What is truth?" 00:16:09.90\00:16:13.37 John is a mater of irony in the fourth gospel 00:16:13.40\00:16:15.59 as we've already noted in the series. 00:16:15.62\00:16:17.77 Already in this narrative, 00:16:17.80\00:16:19.72 he is juxta oppose the Jewish hierarchies 00:16:19.75\00:16:22.25 scrupulous execution of the pass over meal 00:16:22.28\00:16:25.15 all the while they unwittingly collaborate 00:16:25.18\00:16:27.82 to kill the genuine pass over lamb. 00:16:27.85\00:16:31.52 Now the patent governor asked a universal question, 00:16:31.55\00:16:33.95 you, what's truth? 00:16:33.98\00:16:36.34 When embodied, incarnated before him is the answer, 00:16:36.37\00:16:40.10 I am the way the truth in the life. 00:16:40.13\00:16:43.39 Pilate won't wait, what's truth? 00:16:43.42\00:16:45.43 Gone. 00:16:45.46\00:16:47.04 "Pilate said to Him, 'What is truth?' 00:16:47.07\00:16:48.10 And when he had said this, 00:16:48.13\00:16:50.05 he went out again to the Jews, 00:18:28.18\00:18:29.99 All right, seven threes that form one truth, 00:18:30.02\00:18:32.98 all you need to, John, 00:18:33.01\00:18:34.43 all you need to the forth gospel. 00:18:34.46\00:18:36.80 Trio number one right it down, 3 "no faults". 00:18:36.83\00:18:40.07 Put the quotation marks around it 00:18:40.10\00:18:41.19 because those are Pilate's words. 00:18:41.22\00:18:42.65 There times "no fault", 00:18:42.68\00:18:44.84 three "no faults" before the cross. 00:18:44.87\00:18:47.05 Pilate comes out to the cross 00:18:47.08\00:18:49.92 and we just read it here in verse 38, 00:18:49.95\00:18:51.47 "I find no fault in him at all." 00:18:51.50\00:18:52.76 Drop down to chapter 19:4, 00:18:52.79\00:18:54.95 I find no fault in him, drop down to verse 6, 00:18:54.98\00:18:57.19 I find no fault in him. 00:18:57.22\00:18:59.34 Three times this pagan governor early Friday morning 00:18:59.37\00:19:02.29 declares to the leaders of the Judean aristocracy 00:19:02.32\00:19:07.30 and the rabble, he's not guilty, 00:19:07.33\00:19:09.24 I'm telling you he is not guilty. 00:19:09.27\00:19:11.24 What's the point-- 00:19:11.27\00:19:12.30 What's the point John is making, 00:19:12.33\00:19:13.86 two obvious points, point number 1, 00:19:13.89\00:19:16.09 the roman judicial system clearly found Jesus innocent. 00:19:16.12\00:19:20.96 The Jewish courts did not, but the roman courts did. 00:19:20.99\00:19:23.95 The other obvious point however don't miss it, 00:19:23.98\00:19:28.08 the roman governor intentionally sacrifices 00:19:28.11\00:19:31.19 an innocent man, 00:19:31.22\00:19:32.88 he knows to be innocent for the sake personal 00:19:32.91\00:19:35.44 and political experience. 00:19:35.47\00:19:37.21 How many times have we sacrificed 00:19:37.24\00:19:38.62 somebody in the office, somebody in the dorm, 00:19:38.65\00:19:40.88 somebody in my circle of friends for the sake of me? 00:19:40.91\00:19:43.32 Let him go, who cares. 00:19:43.35\00:19:45.14 Pilate is no different, three times. 00:19:45.17\00:19:50.32 You see John has been really hard 00:19:50.35\00:19:51.99 on the Jewish elite. 00:19:52.02\00:19:54.68 Always dealing with the leaders in his gospel, 00:19:54.71\00:19:56.78 hard on them, but here at the end 00:19:56.81\00:19:58.40 he wants to make sure that we understand, 00:19:58.43\00:19:59.71 it's not only the Jewish leadership 00:19:59.74\00:20:01.19 it's also the roman leadership 00:20:01.22\00:20:02.77 that collaborate together to execute the Messiah. 00:20:02.80\00:20:06.33 You're very clear now, you've got to see this. 00:20:06.36\00:20:08.60 Okay, trio number two, 00:20:08.63\00:20:10.18 three titles before the cross, three titles. 00:20:10.21\00:20:13.76 You remember the forth gospel. 00:20:13.79\00:20:15.57 It was like two years ago but it's just a few months ago 00:20:15.60\00:20:17.64 when we opened the forth gospel together, 00:20:17.67\00:20:19.01 you remember John the Baptist thundered these words. 00:20:19.04\00:20:21.87 Jot down these three titles found in the gospel of Mark, 00:20:21.90\00:20:25.47 gospel of John rather. 00:20:25.50\00:20:26.53 This is John 1:29 "The next day John, 00:20:26.56\00:20:28.54 the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him, 00:20:28.57\00:20:30.39 and he said, 'Behold! the Lamb of God, 00:20:30.42\00:20:34.01 who takes away the sin of the world!" 00:20:34.04\00:20:36.37 Title number one write that down 00:20:36.40\00:20:37.67 behold the lamb, behold the Lamb of God. 00:20:37.70\00:20:42.24 Title number two, 00:20:42.27\00:20:43.85 pick it up in verse 1 of chapter 19, 00:20:43.88\00:20:45.87 right here, the bible is open before you. 00:20:45.90\00:20:47.77 "So then" verse 1 00:20:47.80\00:20:48.83 "Pilate tool Jesus and scourged Him." 00:20:48.86\00:20:51.69 We are talking about barbaric, 00:20:51.72\00:20:54.24 bloody a pre-execution, execution. 00:20:54.27\00:20:58.49 In fact some suggested executioners 00:20:58.52\00:21:00.58 actually out of mercy for the prisoners, 00:21:00.61\00:21:02.51 no, we have long and protracted 00:21:02.54\00:21:04.07 death would arrive on the cross. 00:21:04.10\00:21:06.47 Hastened it, shredding the skin, 00:21:06.50\00:21:08.89 to the skin is flat and hanging on your back. 00:21:08.92\00:21:13.02 Then Pilate to Jesus and scourged Him. 00:21:13.05\00:21:15.52 Innocent man, by the way, he believed. 00:21:15.55\00:21:18.59 Verse 2 "And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns 00:21:18.62\00:21:20.79 and put it on His head, 00:21:20.82\00:21:21.85 and they put on him a purple robe." 00:21:21.88\00:21:23.20 Verse 3 "Then they said, 'Hail, King of the Jews!' 00:21:23.23\00:21:25.68 and they struck Him with their hand 00:21:25.71\00:21:26.81 and the Greek means they kept slapping him back and forth. 00:21:26.84\00:21:30.00 Verse 4 "Pilate then went out again and he said to them, 00:21:30.03\00:21:32.58 'Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, 00:21:32.61\00:21:34.56 that you may know that I find no fault in Him.' 00:21:34.59\00:21:36.34 And here comes verse 5, 00:21:36.37\00:21:37.69 "Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorn 00:21:37.72\00:21:41.83 and the purple robe. 00:21:41.86\00:21:42.89 And Pilate said to them, 'Behold the Man!"" 00:21:42.92\00:21:45.79 write it down. 00:21:45.82\00:21:47.25 Title number two, behold the man. 00:21:47.28\00:21:50.49 But the pagan governor is not through with titles. 00:21:50.52\00:21:53.78 Turn-- drop down to verse 13 00:21:53.81\00:21:55.43 "When Pilate therefore heard that saying, 00:21:55.46\00:21:57.06 he brought Jesus out 00:21:57.09\00:21:58.32 and he sat down in the judgment seat in a place 00:21:58.35\00:22:00.61 that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 00:22:00.64\00:22:06.16 I have knelt on that stone, 00:22:06.19\00:22:07.63 it's under building now, it's crawl space, 00:22:07.66\00:22:10.00 I have knelt on that stone. 00:22:10.03\00:22:12.83 So moved, I'll tell you let the whole tour group leave, 00:22:12.86\00:22:16.21 I was all alone, so moved with the realization, 00:22:16.24\00:22:19.43 it's the very stone 00:22:19.46\00:22:21.60 from the time of Pilate, Gabbatha. 00:22:21.63\00:22:24.63 Verse 14, 00:22:26.62\00:22:27.65 "Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, 00:22:27.68\00:22:29.44 and about the sixth hour. 00:22:29.47\00:22:30.55 And he said to the Jews," 00:22:30.58\00:22:31.61 here comes title number three 'Behold your king!" 00:22:31.64\00:22:36.74 Three titles before the cross. 00:22:36.77\00:22:39.02 By the way this is the Antonio Ciseri Movement. 00:22:39.05\00:22:42.05 Just put that picture backup 00:22:42.08\00:22:43.89 This is exactly the moment. 00:22:43.92\00:22:45.95 Now I'm going to read "Desire of Ages" for you. 00:22:45.98\00:22:47.61 You have it in your study guide 00:22:47.64\00:22:48.89 but just look at the picture, you can read it later. 00:22:48.92\00:22:50.79 Just look at that picture, there stood the Son of God 00:22:50.82\00:22:52.82 wearing the robe of mockery 00:22:52.85\00:22:54.57 and the crown of thorns stripped to the waist, 00:22:54.67\00:22:57.91 his back showed the long cruel stripes 00:22:57.94\00:23:01.07 from which the blood float freely, 00:23:01.10\00:23:02.91 his face was stained with blood 00:23:02.94\00:23:04.20 and bore the marks of exhaustion and pain. 00:23:04.23\00:23:06.65 But never had it appeared more beautiful than ever. 00:23:06.68\00:23:12.01 I wish I had a DVD, I wish I could look into those eyes. 00:23:12.04\00:23:17.04 Never ever has this face 00:23:17.07\00:23:20.40 appeared more beautiful than now. 00:23:20.43\00:23:26.24 Wow. 00:23:26.27\00:23:28.65 Every feature express gentleness and resignation 00:23:28.68\00:23:30.87 and the tenderous pity for his cruel foes. 00:23:30.90\00:23:33.55 In his manner there was no weakness, 00:23:33.58\00:23:35.56 but the strength and dignity of long suffering 00:23:35.59\00:23:37.61 and notice this last line, 00:23:37.64\00:23:39.01 even the priest and rulers were convicted 00:23:39.04\00:23:41.73 he was all that he claimed to be. 00:23:41.76\00:23:44.44 He is God, He is. 00:23:44.47\00:23:48.15 Let's kill anybody. 00:23:48.18\00:23:49.70 Behold the lamb, behold the man, 00:23:53.64\00:23:56.27 behold the king, behold your savoir, 00:23:56.30\00:23:58.64 question, is he your savior today? 00:23:58.67\00:24:02.82 Trio number three, write it down, 00:24:02.85\00:24:05.61 "3 languages, 3 languages at the cross." 00:24:05.64\00:24:10.51 Verse 17 let's read it 00:24:10.54\00:24:12.54 "And he, Jesus bearing His cross," 00:24:12.57\00:24:14.50 Oh, where is Simon the Cyrene 00:24:14.53\00:24:16.54 the Libyan, where is the Libyan, 00:24:16.57\00:24:17.95 he's not here, John leaves in completely out 00:24:17.98\00:24:20.69 and we'll notice why in just a moment. 00:24:20.72\00:24:23.33 John "As Jesus is carrying His cross 00:24:23.36\00:24:24.83 and he bearing his cross went out to a place 00:24:24.86\00:24:26.52 called the Place of a Skull, 00:24:26.55\00:24:27.60 which is in Hebrew called Golgotha." 00:24:27.63\00:24:29.74 Isn't that amazing? 00:24:29.77\00:24:31.19 Gabbatha where Pilate sits 00:24:31.22\00:24:33.47 is the judgment seat of the governor, 00:24:33.50\00:24:35.03 Golgotha where Jesus was hanged 00:24:35.06\00:24:36.62 is the judgment seat of God. 00:24:36.65\00:24:40.30 Two judgment seats and they rhyme. 00:24:40.33\00:24:43.29 Verse 18 "When they came to Golgatha they crucified Him, 00:24:47.67\00:24:50.22 Jesus and two others with Him," 00:24:50.25\00:24:51.78 See Dwight there is another three, you are right. 00:24:51.81\00:24:53.90 But that's not unique to John, all four have the three. 00:24:53.93\00:24:58.03 One on either side and Jesus in the center verse 19 00:24:58.06\00:25:00.38 and "Now Pilate wrote a title and put out it on the cross. 00:25:00.41\00:25:03.04 And the writing was: Jesus of Nazareth, 00:25:03.07\00:25:05.42 the king of the Jews. 00:25:05.45\00:25:07.24 Then many of the Jews read this title, 00:25:07.27\00:25:09.02 many of them read the title, 00:25:09.05\00:25:10.08 for the place where was crucified was near the city." 00:25:10.11\00:25:12.62 And here it comes "It was written in that title 00:25:12.65\00:25:15.00 in Hebrew that would be Aramaic and Greek and Latin." 00:25:15.03\00:25:21.07 I don't care where are you from in the Roman Empire, 00:25:21.10\00:25:22.90 you're gonna get the point. 00:25:22.93\00:25:24.16 This is the king of the Jews. 00:25:24.19\00:25:27.97 Now the priest are furious, they come to Pilate verse 21 00:25:28.00\00:25:32.33 "Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, 00:25:32.36\00:25:34.92 'Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' 00:25:34.95\00:25:37.04 You should write 'He said, 'I am the King of the Jews."" 00:25:37.07\00:25:39.99 And Pilate with cold steel in his eyes 00:25:40.02\00:25:42.86 where he was railroaded in to his decision 00:25:42.89\00:25:44.89 and he knows it a leader that he was, 00:25:44.92\00:25:50.20 cold steel what I have written, I have written. 00:25:50.23\00:25:55.78 You see the priest overplayed their hand, 00:25:55.81\00:25:58.64 the charge against Jesus they told Pilate 00:25:58.67\00:26:00.58 was he-- King of the Jews, 00:26:00.61\00:26:02.61 boom, he puts it in writing. 00:26:02.64\00:26:05.45 And they are stuck. 00:26:05.48\00:26:08.99 Trio number four, write it down, 00:26:09.02\00:26:10.82 three Mary's at the cross. 00:26:10.85\00:26:14.43 You know that only John, only John. 00:26:14.46\00:26:18.35 Let's read the verse 25 got down to 25, 00:26:18.38\00:26:20.87 "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother," 00:26:20.90\00:26:23.21 What's His mother's name? 00:26:23.24\00:26:24.75 Mary. 00:26:24.78\00:26:25.96 "And His mother's sister, 00:26:25.99\00:26:27.10 Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene." 00:26:27.13\00:26:31.13 There they are, three Mary's only John notes it. 00:26:31.16\00:26:35.02 And by the way, they are all women. 00:26:35.05\00:26:37.58 Where are the men, where are all the big, 00:26:37.61\00:26:41.46 where are all the big bragioso boys? 00:26:41.49\00:26:44.29 They were "I'll die for you, where are all the men, 00:26:44.32\00:26:49.81 one man is a boy, John boy. 00:26:49.84\00:26:53.64 The only eye witness of Calvary, 00:26:53.67\00:26:55.62 the only account that is eye witnessed. 00:26:55.65\00:26:58.43 All the men have fled. 00:26:58.46\00:27:00.25 I tell you what in a day and age 00:27:00.28\00:27:01.75 when some are wondering whether women 00:27:01.78\00:27:04.08 ought to be granted a place close to Jesus in ministry, 00:27:04.11\00:27:08.09 the story of Calvary seems to indicate 00:27:08.12\00:27:11.09 that perhaps they ought to be there first. 00:27:11.12\00:27:14.38 Passion of a women for Christ. 00:27:18.10\00:27:21.63 Unexcelled. 00:27:21.66\00:27:22.79 The only John boy there to receive Jesus 00:27:26.71\00:27:28.61 dying bestole of his mother to John's care, 00:27:28.64\00:27:31.11 mother's day is just a few weeks away. 00:27:31.14\00:27:34.55 And how is it with your own mother, 00:27:34.58\00:27:37.30 do you care for her and love her 00:27:37.33\00:27:39.80 in all your preoccupied business 00:27:39.83\00:27:42.28 on this campus and in your career? 00:27:42.31\00:27:46.39 Trio number five jot it down, "3 words from the cross, 00:27:46.42\00:27:51.63 the Christian world is long commemorated, 00:27:51.66\00:27:53.28 Christ seven words from the cross. 00:27:53.31\00:27:55.71 Not gone through my gospels and I've numbered them, 00:27:55.74\00:27:57.39 I know exactly the sequence 1, 2, 3. 00:27:57.42\00:27:59.58 But John unique has three that nobody else has, 00:27:59.61\00:28:04.20 here are John's 3 that happened to be numbers, 00:28:04.23\00:28:07.24 they happen to be numbers 3, 5 00:28:07.27\00:28:10.14 and 6 of the seven. 00:28:10.17\00:28:11.50 Let's go to, let's go to his first word in John, 00:28:11.53\00:28:13.96 that will be verse 26 00:28:13.99\00:28:15.02 "When Jesus therefore saw His mother, 00:28:15.05\00:28:16.53 and the disciple whom He loved" 00:28:16.56\00:28:17.82 That would be John boy 00:28:17.85\00:28:18.92 "Standing by, Jesus said to his mother, 00:28:18.95\00:28:20.85 'Woman, behold your son!' 00:28:20.88\00:28:24.36 Then He said to the disciple, 'Behold your mother!' 00:28:24.39\00:28:26.88 'And from that hour John boy took her to his own home." 00:28:26.91\00:28:32.13 Jesus had no siblings to commend her to, 00:28:32.16\00:28:35.79 he gives her to John. 00:28:35.82\00:28:37.75 And John counts it his highest honor 00:28:37.78\00:28:39.10 for the rest of his life until she dies, 00:28:39.13\00:28:42.35 to be her care provider. 00:28:42.38\00:28:46.90 It's word number one, you need word, 00:28:46.93\00:28:48.35 you need word number two, here comes the verse 28 00:28:48.38\00:28:50.31 and "After this, Jesus, knowing 00:28:50.34\00:28:52.24 that all things were now accomplished, 00:28:52.27\00:28:54.19 that the Scripture might be fulfilled said, 00:28:54.22\00:28:56.36 'I thirst!' 00:28:56.39\00:28:59.40 verse 29 "Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; 00:28:59.43\00:29:03.31 and they filled a sponge with sour wine, 00:29:03.34\00:29:05.26 put it on hyssop, and put it up to His mouth." 00:29:05.29\00:29:08.96 Matthew and Mark both quote Psalm 22:1, 00:29:08.99\00:29:11.88 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:29:11.91\00:29:14.59 not a breath of it from John, but he will elude to Psalm 22 00:29:14.62\00:29:18.65 from when that those words came in Matthew and Mark 00:29:18.68\00:29:22.00 because in Psalm 22 00:29:22.03\00:29:23.21 the Messiah's tongue becomes so dry, 00:29:23.24\00:29:25.41 it sticks to the roof of his mouth, 00:29:25.44\00:29:26.98 it's like dust in his mouth. 00:29:27.01\00:29:29.00 And John inserts, John inserts I thirst, 00:29:29.03\00:29:35.04 remember that from it's very beginning 00:29:35.07\00:29:37.08 the forth gospel has attempted 00:29:37.11\00:29:38.56 to show the utter humanity of Jesus. 00:29:38.59\00:29:42.51 Our humanity so he sees-- 00:29:42.54\00:29:43.80 He sees this merit woman, says woman-- 00:29:43.83\00:29:46.00 Woman I'm dying of thirst, you have-- 00:29:46.03\00:29:47.72 Can you give me some of this water? 00:29:47.75\00:29:49.76 John who began dine, Jesus thirsty 00:29:49.79\00:29:52.79 and this is gospel showing again his solidarity 00:29:52.82\00:29:55.47 with the human race, 00:29:55.50\00:29:56.53 I'm still human and I'm thirsty, 00:29:56.56\00:29:59.27 he shows it twice confirming that the savior 00:29:59.30\00:30:02.84 is the one with us. 00:30:02.87\00:30:04.61 And then there is a third word, this is the one we all know, 00:30:04.64\00:30:06.31 verse 30 "So when Jesus had received the sour wine, 00:30:06.34\00:30:09.50 He said, 'It is finished!' in those transitions 00:30:09.53\00:30:15.42 "And bowing His head he gave up His spirit." 00:30:15.45\00:30:18.89 There they are, three words from the cross. 00:30:18.92\00:30:23.97 Trio number six jot it down, "3 actions from the cross." 00:30:24.00\00:30:27.19 This is fascinating, absolutely fascinating, 00:30:27.22\00:30:29.80 listen to this, you remember a moment ago 00:30:29.83\00:30:31.62 and we noted that Jesus carried his own cross 00:30:31.65\00:30:33.22 there is no Simon or Libyan around, 00:30:33.25\00:30:35.16 John leaves him believe me Jesus carries his own cross, 00:30:35.19\00:30:37.19 what's up with that? 00:30:37.22\00:30:38.73 John is making a point 00:30:38.76\00:30:40.76 and he wants us to get it by these three actions, 00:30:40.79\00:30:43.02 jot the point down first. 00:30:43.05\00:30:44.14 Jesus was in control of His life 00:30:44.17\00:30:47.49 and death to the very end. 00:30:47.52\00:30:50.57 He is in control, nobody else says, I am. 00:30:50.60\00:30:54.52 All His ministries has been saying my hours not yet, 00:30:54.55\00:30:57.20 my hours not yet, my hours not yet. 00:30:57.23\00:30:59.26 But when his hour comes, he didn't tumble into it, 00:30:59.29\00:31:01.92 he didn't trip into it, he chose his hour. 00:31:01.95\00:31:05.39 Number one, John shows him carrying no cross. 00:31:05.42\00:31:08.66 Nobody-- I should rephrase that, 00:31:08.69\00:31:10.28 nobody carries his cross but Jesus. 00:31:10.31\00:31:12.35 Number two, look at this, action number two, 00:31:12.38\00:31:16.00 the three actions from the cross, 00:31:16.03\00:31:18.29 did we put the slide up the three actions? 00:31:18.32\00:31:21.36 That's it, that's the history-did 00:31:21.39\00:31:22.66 we put it up? 00:31:22.69\00:31:23.77 Okay. 00:31:23.80\00:31:25.21 Action number one, he bores on cross. 00:31:25.24\00:31:26.51 Check action number two. 00:31:26.54\00:31:27.81 He chooses his last words of completion. 00:31:27.84\00:31:30.21 He decides when it's gonna be finished. 00:31:30.24\00:31:33.02 He chooses it. 00:31:33.05\00:31:34.36 And action number three, only in John. 00:31:34.39\00:31:37.00 Notice the sequence you read just a moment ago 00:31:37.03\00:31:38.81 in verse 30, how Jesus died. 00:31:38.84\00:31:40.35 And when you and I die, this is the way we ill die. 00:31:40.38\00:31:42.59 If Jesus doesn't come, 00:31:42.62\00:31:43.88 you and I are gonna breathe our last. 00:31:43.91\00:31:45.39 This is the way we're gonna die. 00:31:45.42\00:31:46.45 We're gonna- There goes our last breath 00:31:46.48\00:31:49.48 and after we breathe our last breath, 00:31:49.51\00:31:51.94 boom, our head will go down. 00:31:51.97\00:31:53.72 Isn't that how it happens in the movies? 00:31:53.75\00:31:56.68 I mean I'm figuring that's the way it goes. 00:31:56.71\00:31:59.51 I've been with people when they died. 00:31:59.54\00:32:00.86 I know that's the way it goes. 00:32:00.89\00:32:01.92 Not with Jesus. 00:32:05.00\00:32:06.59 He doesn't go, phew, last breath, boom. 00:32:06.62\00:32:09.41 Jesus goes like this. 00:32:09.44\00:32:12.10 He bows his head, then breathes his last. 00:32:12.13\00:32:16.56 Intentional action. 00:32:16.59\00:32:18.33 Three actions to show that he is in control 00:32:18.36\00:32:21.83 and look how quick Keener puts it. 00:32:21.86\00:32:23.01 Put it on the screen, you have to fill this in. 00:32:23.04\00:32:24.17 "The crucifixion in John is Jesus' triumph." 00:32:24.20\00:32:27.19 The synoptic is focused on his passion, his suffering. 00:32:27.22\00:32:29.78 Oh, my Lord, what you went through. 00:32:29.81\00:32:31.92 None of that in John. Jesus ends the conqueror. 00:32:31.95\00:32:34.45 He ends in triumph. 00:32:34.48\00:32:35.84 My hour has finally come. 00:32:39.04\00:32:41.04 Final trio number 7, jot it down. 00:32:41.07\00:32:43.44 There are three woundings because of the cross. 00:32:43.47\00:32:46.40 You need to, John. 00:32:46.43\00:32:47.86 Now the first two are in all the gospels. 00:32:47.89\00:32:50.54 Wounding number one, that's the flagrum, 00:32:50.57\00:32:52.19 that's when that, that those leather straps 00:32:52.22\00:32:55.20 embedded with bone and metal and rock 00:32:55.23\00:32:57.81 are wrapped around you by the executioner. 00:32:57.84\00:32:59.81 Once he gets it around you, your bare, 00:32:59.84\00:33:01.93 he yanks it and it just shreds your skin. 00:33:01.96\00:33:04.39 It just shreds. 00:33:04.42\00:33:05.54 He has already been wounded once. 00:33:05.57\00:33:06.96 The other wounding of course is Calvary. 00:33:06.99\00:33:08.91 But the third wounding nobody else knows. 00:33:08.94\00:33:12.37 Let's pick it up in verse 31. 00:33:12.40\00:33:14.82 He has just died. "Therefore--" Verse 31. 00:33:14.85\00:33:17.33 "-because it was the Preparation Day, 00:33:17.36\00:33:19.66 that the bodies should not remain 00:33:19.69\00:33:20.90 on the cross on the Sabbath 00:33:20.93\00:33:22.15 for that Sabbath was a high day, 00:33:22.18\00:33:23.86 the Jews asked Pilate 00:33:23.89\00:33:24.93 that their legs might be broken, 00:33:24.96\00:33:26.36 and that they might be taken away." 00:33:26.39\00:33:28.24 You see the barbaric form 00:33:28.27\00:33:29.30 of crucifixion is slow asphyxiation. 00:33:29.33\00:33:31.75 You will strangulate to death 00:33:31.78\00:33:34.31 because in order to breathe, 00:33:34.34\00:33:35.56 you have to raise yourself up, 00:33:35.59\00:33:37.79 suck it, and then sink back down. 00:33:37.82\00:33:40.18 It is such searing pain 00:33:40.21\00:33:42.08 that the Latin has coined a word excruciatus. 00:33:42.11\00:33:45.29 From whence comes our word 00:33:45.32\00:33:46.38 and it means from out of the cross-- excruciating. 00:33:46.41\00:33:49.07 The next time you have an excruciating headache, 00:33:49.10\00:33:50.86 you are saying my pain is from out of the cross. 00:33:50.89\00:33:53.41 Excruciatus. 00:33:53.44\00:33:54.71 So when they want to hasten death, 00:33:56.53\00:33:58.37 what do they do? 00:33:58.40\00:33:59.43 They break the legs because you know, 00:33:59.46\00:34:01.38 you have no strength now. 00:34:01.41\00:34:03.27 Raise yourself up, you will simply hang 00:34:03.30\00:34:05.70 and they strangulate. 00:34:05.73\00:34:07.30 'Cause you're legs are broken, it's too painful. 00:34:07.33\00:34:09.70 That's what they did. 00:34:09.73\00:34:11.26 Verse 32, "Then the soldiers came 00:34:11.29\00:34:12.74 and broke the legs of the first 00:34:12.77\00:34:14.69 and of the other who was crucified with Him." 00:34:14.72\00:34:16.34 "But-" verse 33, "- 00:34:16.37\00:34:17.67 when they came to Jesus 00:34:17.70\00:34:18.74 and saw that He was already dead-" 00:34:18.77\00:34:21.58 You don't die this fast. 00:34:21.61\00:34:23.98 And, "-they saw that He was already dead, 00:34:24.01\00:34:25.48 they did not break His legs." 00:34:25.51\00:34:26.80 Verse 34, "But one of the soldiers 00:34:26.83\00:34:28.96 pierced His side with a spear, 00:34:28.99\00:34:30.89 and immediately blood and water came out." 00:34:30.92\00:34:36.11 Only in John. 00:34:36.14\00:34:37.98 The third wounding. 00:34:38.01\00:34:39.84 Isn't this amazing? Think about it. 00:34:39.87\00:34:42.13 Jesus rode to the cross 00:34:42.16\00:34:43.47 that begins at the front of the gospel. 00:34:43.50\00:34:45.59 Begins with water turning into wine, isn't that right? 00:34:45.62\00:34:49.34 Water turning into wine. 00:34:49.37\00:34:51.13 His road to Calvary ends with wine turning into water. 00:34:51.16\00:34:56.77 They just gave Him some wine and then it comes out water. 00:34:56.80\00:35:00.54 Reverses the buckets, water to wine, wine to water 00:35:00.57\00:35:06.65 what's the big deal John, ah, wine and water, 00:35:06.68\00:35:09.94 blood and water, blood and water, blood and water, 00:35:09.97\00:35:12.54 it's embedded throughout the entire gospel, 00:35:12.57\00:35:14.26 blood and water, blood and water. 00:35:14.29\00:35:15.88 You are saved by blood and water, blood and water. 00:35:15.91\00:35:20.65 Here they are, Ladies and Gentlemen, 00:35:20.68\00:35:22.40 seven unique trios woven into John's narrative of Calvary 00:35:22.43\00:35:25.65 but what is the one truth. Seven trios, one truth. 00:35:25.68\00:35:28.58 What is it? 00:35:28.61\00:35:30.32 Listen carefully. 00:35:30.35\00:35:31.44 What is the gospel? They answered. 00:35:31.47\00:35:34.00 What the gospel means to me, 00:35:34.03\00:35:36.29 in the triumphant cry of Jesus, it is finished. 00:35:36.32\00:35:40.70 There is a closure and completeness we not- 00:35:40.73\00:35:43.74 we need not only to intellectually grasp 00:35:43.77\00:35:46.60 but experientially embrace and here's what I mean. 00:35:46.63\00:35:51.90 In our particular community of faith, 00:35:51.93\00:35:53.90 highly convictional community that it is, 00:35:53.93\00:35:56.87 where right living and right behaving 00:35:56.90\00:35:59.53 are rightly emphasized. 00:35:59.56\00:36:02.82 There is a danger that we may live 00:36:02.85\00:36:05.45 with a numinous sense, a latent uncertainty 00:36:05.48\00:36:09.03 regarding the status of my salvation. 00:36:09.06\00:36:12.86 I mean, am I really saved? 00:36:12.89\00:36:14.91 How do I know, how do I know I'm fully saved? 00:36:14.94\00:36:18.81 Oh, yeah, I know, I know John 3:16. 00:36:18.84\00:36:20.29 I know that Jesus died for me 00:36:20.32\00:36:22.26 but do I, can I have the assurance 00:36:22.29\00:36:23.84 of his provision for my salvation? 00:36:23.87\00:36:25.98 I'm talking about failing, fumbling, 00:36:26.01\00:36:28.51 stumbling, sinning me. 00:36:28.54\00:36:30.87 How can I know that that salvation is for me? 00:36:30.90\00:36:38.01 I know he triumphed on the cross. 00:36:38.04\00:36:39.44 I read the story just now 00:36:39.47\00:36:41.09 but what is God waiting for-- for me? 00:36:41.12\00:36:42.97 How can I rise above this troubling sense 00:36:43.00\00:36:46.37 that in order to be really sure, really secure 00:36:46.40\00:36:49.53 there is something else I need to be doing. 00:36:49.56\00:36:52.79 How can I know I am saved. 00:36:52.82\00:36:56.60 We all need, all of us need to take a closer 00:36:56.63\00:36:59.64 look at this, at this death cry. 00:36:59.67\00:37:02.21 It is finished. 00:37:02.24\00:37:03.35 In fact would you jot this down please? 00:37:03.38\00:37:04.60 The literal Greek phrase is finished. 00:37:04.63\00:37:06.07 Jot his down. 00:37:06.10\00:37:07.13 The literal Greek for is "It has been completed." 00:37:07.16\00:37:10.23 Write that down. It has been completed. 00:37:10.26\00:37:13.38 Keep your pen moving. 00:37:16.82\00:37:18.38 That Greek is in the perfect tense. 00:37:18.41\00:37:20.23 Now that means, it's describing an action 00:37:20.26\00:37:22.28 finished in the past, jot that down. 00:37:22.31\00:37:24.08 An action finished in the past 00:37:24.11\00:37:26.94 whose effects continue into the present. 00:37:26.97\00:37:30.81 So it has happened back there 00:37:30.84\00:37:32.12 but the effect is still going under there. 00:37:32.15\00:37:34.17 It would be like you getting a FedEx, 00:37:34.20\00:37:35.84 you get a FedEx registered letter on Monday. 00:37:35.87\00:37:38.49 You tear it open and you find out 00:37:38.52\00:37:40.35 it's from a law firm 00:37:40.38\00:37:41.45 you have never heard of in your life. 00:37:41.48\00:37:43.59 Turns out that your great uncle whom you have never met 00:37:43.62\00:37:47.16 but have heard of, turns out your great uncle has died. 00:37:47.19\00:37:52.94 And some years before he died and he died childless 00:37:52.97\00:37:56.09 but some years before he died, 00:37:56.12\00:37:57.66 he filled out the will of his entire estate to you 00:37:57.69\00:38:04.55 and now that the law firm has found you, 00:38:04.58\00:38:08.35 you are about to inherit 00:38:08.38\00:38:09.85 his entire estate worth $3.3 billion. 00:38:09.88\00:38:16.37 I say, praise God for great uncles like that, huh. 00:38:16.40\00:38:19.09 $3.3 billion. 00:38:19.12\00:38:20.72 See, long ago, that will was completed with you in mind, 00:38:23.81\00:38:27.15 it was all signed, sealed and delivered back there 00:38:27.18\00:38:29.83 but now they finally find you 00:38:29.86\00:38:31.37 and the effects of that closure back 00:38:31.40\00:38:33.87 there now continues to reap its effect. 00:38:33.90\00:38:36.54 That's what's happening in the Greek tense 00:38:36.57\00:38:38.80 of "It is finished." 00:38:38.83\00:38:39.86 It's that same reality. Now listen up. 00:38:39.89\00:38:41.91 When Jesus died for the entire human race, 00:38:41.94\00:38:45.13 something was culminated. Something was completed. 00:38:45.16\00:38:48.77 In a very certain sense, 00:38:48.80\00:38:49.86 his mission of salvation was finished. 00:38:49.89\00:38:53.03 Finish. It was finished at the cross. 00:38:53.06\00:38:56.01 But, like your great uncle's will, 00:38:56.04\00:38:58.63 the effects keep rolling throughout history 00:38:58.66\00:39:01.84 as one human being after another 00:39:01.87\00:39:04.32 discovers that she, that he is named in Christ's will 00:39:04.35\00:39:08.34 and it's all there for the asking. 00:39:08.37\00:39:10.62 All you have to do is trust the benefactor, 00:39:14.39\00:39:18.37 believe his will or his word and receive the gift. 00:39:18.40\00:39:24.31 It is finished. 00:39:24.34\00:39:26.20 Means, we can rest secure and Jesus finished mission 00:39:26.23\00:39:29.60 and work at the cross. 00:39:29.63\00:39:32.78 In fact would you write this down, please? 00:39:32.81\00:39:35.84 What counts is not- that's my typo- 00:39:35.87\00:39:39.24 What counts is not my unfinished work- 00:39:39.27\00:39:46.10 but rather His finished work. 00:39:46.13\00:39:50.64 Get that down. 00:39:50.67\00:39:52.80 The secret to overcoming 00:39:52.83\00:39:54.14 our apprehension over our salvation 00:39:54.17\00:39:56.38 is to shift the focus from us to Him. 00:39:56.41\00:39:58.60 Otherwise, we are gonna be 00:39:58.63\00:40:01.03 as guilty as the medieval church 00:40:01.06\00:40:03.05 in making the same mistake they made for centuries. 00:40:03.08\00:40:05.92 And that reminds you about the medieval church. 00:40:05.95\00:40:07.86 Their scholars all thought and taught 00:40:07.89\00:40:10.98 that the earth was the centre of the universe 00:40:11.01\00:40:13.77 and all the stars and all the suns 00:40:13.80\00:40:16.78 rotate around the earth. 00:40:16.81\00:40:18.65 Then along comes a little scientist named Galileo. 00:40:18.68\00:40:21.11 He says, I got to change this notion, guys. 00:40:21.14\00:40:23.55 I looked up there and guess what, 00:40:23.58\00:40:24.62 the sun does not revolve around us. 00:40:24.65\00:40:27.27 We revolve around the sun. 00:40:27.30\00:40:31.30 We are not the centre of attraction. 00:40:31.33\00:40:34.12 The sun is. 00:40:34.15\00:40:37.26 I fear that too many of us have constructed 00:40:37.29\00:40:40.90 a faulty salvation/theological paradigm that places us 00:40:40.93\00:40:45.95 as the centre of attention, as the centre of attraction, 00:40:45.98\00:40:51.27 salvation revolves around me, so that what I do, 00:40:51.30\00:40:54.79 or do not do make all the difference. 00:40:54.82\00:40:56.88 What I accomplish or do not accomplish, 00:40:56.91\00:40:58.75 that's what makes all the difference. 00:40:58.78\00:41:00.39 I become the centre of my own universe. 00:41:00.42\00:41:05.87 Calvary, when you hear that shout, 00:41:05.90\00:41:09.74 "it is finished" declares that thinking is wrong. 00:41:09.77\00:41:15.31 Simply bankrupt. 00:41:15.34\00:41:17.61 Calvary is a closure. 00:41:19.17\00:41:20.91 It is the completeness. 00:41:20.95\00:41:22.43 It is the finishing of God's salvation. 00:41:22.46\00:41:24.34 Oh, yes, you're right, you're right, you're right. 00:41:24.37\00:41:25.79 In heaven's sanctuary, in the throne room right now, 00:41:25.82\00:41:28.75 the saving work of Christ continues 00:41:28.78\00:41:31.13 but that hardly minimizes or negates 00:41:31.16\00:41:34.39 the triumphant finish once for all sacrifice 00:41:34.42\00:41:37.33 of the Lord Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago. 00:41:37.36\00:41:42.98 I repeat, the reason some of us 00:41:43.01\00:41:48.17 feel apprehension of our salvation today 00:41:48.20\00:41:51.31 is because like the medieval church 00:41:51.34\00:41:53.66 we believe we are the centre 00:41:53.69\00:41:55.02 around which the savior and salvation revolve 00:41:55.05\00:41:57.75 but how silly, how sad, I mean, look, 00:41:57.78\00:42:04.19 if I am the centre and I know how weak and frail, 00:42:04.22\00:42:07.51 I know how sinning I am, how utterly helpless, 00:42:07.54\00:42:11.08 if I am the centre, no wonder I have no hope. 00:42:11.11\00:42:14.13 No wonder there is no courage for me. 00:42:14.16\00:42:17.33 But if Christ is the center of attraction, 00:42:17.36\00:42:20.15 if he is the center of thy completed work, 00:42:20.18\00:42:23.81 then everything I have is pinned on him. 00:42:23.84\00:42:27.99 My hope, my assurance, my salvation securing Him. 00:42:28.02\00:42:32.19 Jot this down, will you? Please. 00:42:35.43\00:42:37.46 "The truth is--" This is critical. 00:42:37.49\00:42:39.14 "The truth is that the Son-" 00:42:39.17\00:42:41.37 And by the way, that's capital "SON." 00:42:41.40\00:42:44.05 "The son does not revolve around us- 00:42:44.08\00:42:47.83 we revolve around the Son." 00:42:47.86\00:42:51.02 Jesus is the center of attraction 00:42:55.40\00:42:57.53 for salvation not you. 00:42:57.56\00:43:00.31 Shrilling on me. 00:43:00.34\00:43:02.46 No wonder as soon as Jesus dies, 00:43:02.49\00:43:04.02 John immediately, did you notice this, 00:43:04.05\00:43:05.34 immediately he starts talking about the Sabbath 00:43:05.37\00:43:06.83 and blood or water. 00:43:06.86\00:43:07.89 What's up with that, John? 00:43:07.92\00:43:09.52 Why the Sabbath? Jot this down. 00:43:09.55\00:43:10.95 "In the Creation story-" You remember this. 00:43:10.98\00:43:13.03 "In the Creation story, on Friday 00:43:13.06\00:43:15.21 God declares His finished work- and it was 'very good' 00:43:15.24\00:43:18.09 and on the seventh-day Sabbath He rests." 00:43:18.12\00:43:22.99 "In the Redemption story-" Keep writing. 00:43:23.02\00:43:25.18 The same God, "--on Friday declares His finished work- 00:43:25.21\00:43:30.97 and it was 'very good' 00:43:31.00\00:43:32.67 and on the seventh-day Sabbath He rests in the tomb." 00:43:32.70\00:43:38.79 Once salvation is finished, He rests. 00:43:38.82\00:43:45.00 Nothing to add. 00:43:45.03\00:43:47.22 I can't add anything to creation, can I? 00:43:47.25\00:43:48.78 Oh, God, I want to add, I want to add 00:43:48.81\00:43:49.84 little something to creation. 00:43:49.87\00:43:51.16 You can't add anything. 00:43:51.19\00:43:53.02 If I can't anything to creation, 00:43:53.05\00:43:54.32 how could I add anything to salvation? 00:43:54.35\00:43:55.75 It's finished. 00:43:55.78\00:43:56.81 2,000 years ago, it was done before I was born. 00:43:56.84\00:43:59.30 Sabbath is embedded in John's Calvary story 00:44:04.76\00:44:07.18 to assure us that it is finished 00:44:07.21\00:44:09.57 means it really is finished. 00:44:09.60\00:44:13.69 You can rest. 00:44:13.72\00:44:14.89 You can rest in Him. 00:44:14.92\00:44:18.29 But why the blood and the water? 00:44:18.32\00:44:19.36 Good question. 00:44:19.39\00:44:20.85 When that soldier took his lancet up to the rib cage, 00:44:20.88\00:44:24.62 it burst the pericardial sack of Jesus' heart 00:44:24.65\00:44:27.34 releasing that trickle of blood and water 00:44:27.37\00:44:30.37 that John had, boy, himself witnessed. 00:44:30.40\00:44:32.60 He saw it running down the chest of his dead master. 00:44:32.63\00:44:37.18 John wants us to remember all through the fourth gospel, 00:44:40.41\00:44:44.93 it's been blood and water, blood and water, 00:44:44.96\00:44:47.63 water-baptism, water to wine, blood and water, 00:44:47.66\00:44:50.85 blood and water all the way through. 00:44:50.88\00:44:53.18 And when we get to the climactic moment 00:44:53.21\00:44:55.80 of the universe's history, John declares, 00:44:55.83\00:44:59.18 it's blood and water, all Jesus for our salvation. 00:44:59.21\00:45:05.04 Not my blood and water, His blood and water. 00:45:05.07\00:45:09.29 We are secure in Him. Jot this down, will you? 00:45:09.32\00:45:13.43 "The blood of His finished sacrifice-" 00:45:13.46\00:45:14.49 What's that all about? 00:45:14.52\00:45:15.55 "--that covers my sins in the past, 00:45:15.58\00:45:17.34 the water of His continuous purification-" 00:45:17.37\00:45:18.66 What's that all about? 00:45:18.69\00:45:19.72 "--that cleanses my life in the present." 00:45:19.75\00:45:21.32 Isn't this amazing? 00:45:21.35\00:45:22.48 Listen, guys. Look at this. 00:45:22.51\00:45:23.68 John has made sure that 00:45:23.71\00:45:25.40 we're not only dealing in the past. 00:45:25.43\00:45:26.72 Oh, come on. Everything's 2,000 years ago. 00:45:26.75\00:45:28.17 Yeah, that's good. 00:45:28.20\00:45:29.23 The blood covers everything 00:45:29.26\00:45:31.09 but those are the words but what about the present 00:45:31.12\00:45:33.39 when I mess up, mess up, mess up. 00:45:33.42\00:45:35.04 We have water for cleansing now. 00:45:35.07\00:45:37.28 So there's- Jesus covers us in the past 00:45:37.31\00:45:39.23 and He covers us in the present 00:45:39.26\00:45:40.91 and He would journey with us into his future. 00:45:40.94\00:45:44.38 Blood and water. 00:45:44.41\00:45:46.30 Oh, you don't have to be apprehensive, 00:45:46.33\00:45:48.20 you don't have to worry 00:45:48.23\00:45:49.61 about the state of your salvation, 00:45:49.64\00:45:51.40 is there something more I should be doing, God? 00:45:51.43\00:45:53.17 I don't feel very secure. Forget it. 00:45:53.20\00:45:56.88 It is finished means it really is finished. 00:45:56.91\00:46:02.72 Just how finished these words from the century ago, 00:46:05.98\00:46:08.90 you've never seen this quote, 00:46:08.93\00:46:09.96 I'll put it on the screen for you, 00:46:09.99\00:46:11.16 you have it in your study guide, 00:46:11.19\00:46:12.74 "Christ planted the cross between heaven and turn this in, in just a moment. 00:50:23.56\00:50:25.07 Thank you for-- for your name there but-- 00:50:25.10\00:50:28.50 But go the back side it says my next step today is-- 00:50:28.53\00:50:33.10 Is next step to design to fit every teaching. 00:50:33.13\00:50:36.31 Here are two that I'd suggest, here are two, 00:50:36.34\00:50:39.49 I want to spend some time everyday 00:50:39.52\00:50:40.96 this next week thanking God 00:50:40.99\00:50:42.19 that it is finished really means it is finished. 00:50:42.22\00:50:45.51 Why not, everyday when you have your worship 00:50:45.54\00:50:47.89 you just say, hey, God this week-- 00:50:47.92\00:50:49.94 This post ester week I'm celebrating 00:50:49.97\00:50:52.68 that it is finished really means it is finished. 00:50:52.71\00:50:55.87 Every morning you'll need a little reminder, 00:50:55.90\00:50:58.11 you can just do it. 00:50:58.14\00:50:59.61 Put a check mark there, yeah-- 00:50:59.64\00:51:01.25 Dwight I'll join you in that 00:51:01.28\00:51:02.39 and here's another one I would like to share 00:51:02.42\00:51:04.36 John 19's "It is finished story" 00:51:04.39\00:51:06.48 with someone who needs this assurance, 00:51:06.51\00:51:08.75 now listen to me carefully, 00:51:08.78\00:51:09.83 I'm going to be misunderstood probably 00:51:09.86\00:51:11.63 but I'm going to say it anyway, 00:51:11.66\00:51:13.20 the older you get sometimes 00:51:13.23\00:51:15.38 in this particular community of faith, 00:51:15.41\00:51:18.78 the more apprehensive you can become. 00:51:18.81\00:51:22.07 My dear grandmother, she rests in Jesus now, 00:51:22.10\00:51:25.40 died at 99 years of age 00:51:25.43\00:51:26.82 but I remember visiting her once out of Loma Linda, 00:51:26.85\00:51:29.52 I was pasturing here 00:51:29.55\00:51:30.58 and went out there to see grandma 00:51:30.61\00:51:32.04 and you know, she'd be watching on T.V 00:51:32.07\00:51:34.08 and it's her boy and knowing all that, 00:51:34.11\00:51:35.64 but she said, Dwight, 00:51:35.67\00:51:37.06 you know tell me again, how it works. 00:51:37.09\00:51:41.34 I mean, she has-- She has been a world-- 00:51:41.37\00:51:43.90 world church leader and all but why, 00:51:43.93\00:51:45.93 she just because the older you get 00:51:45.96\00:51:47.66 I guess probably the nearer you get to death 00:51:47.69\00:51:50.13 you're just saying, do I really have 00:51:50.16\00:51:51.78 all my bases covered, is everything okay? 00:51:51.81\00:51:54.70 Now at your age you're saying, 00:51:54.73\00:51:56.37 "Hey, of course I got, it's great, hallelujah 00:51:56.40\00:51:59.97 but there may be somebody in your circle, 00:52:00.00\00:52:06.23 in your neighborhood circle, 00:52:06.26\00:52:07.48 in your family circle, in your friendship circle, 00:52:07.51\00:52:12.02 who struggles with knowing 00:52:12.05\00:52:13.74 the good news of the 'It is finished'. 00:52:13.77\00:52:15.60 That's what the second sentence is, 00:52:15.63\00:52:16.95 look it I would like to share John 19's 00:52:16.98\00:52:18.70 'It is finished' story with someone who needs it. 00:52:18.73\00:52:21.31 God if you leave me to somebody to-- 00:52:21.34\00:52:23.07 Somebody this next week or five weeks from now, 00:52:23.10\00:52:25.45 I'm not gonna forget this. 00:52:25.48\00:52:26.77 I know the good news is it is finished, 00:52:26.80\00:52:29.25 means it really is finished 00:52:29.28\00:52:31.24 and so help me to just be able to tell that story. 00:52:31.27\00:52:37.10 Sat beside an agnostic 00:52:37.13\00:52:38.29 when I was flying out to Germany 00:52:38.32\00:52:39.50 just a few days ago for ester weekend out there, 00:52:39.53\00:52:42.59 want to tell you next Sabbath 00:52:42.62\00:52:44.27 that conversation with an agnostic 00:52:44.30\00:52:46.14 from Norte Dame University. 00:52:46.17\00:52:48.07 I'll share that story with you. 00:52:48.10\00:52:50.67 There will be somebody that will come in your life 00:52:50.70\00:52:52.44 that you can share the gospel with. 00:52:52.47\00:52:54.65 Just say God I make myself available please, 00:52:54.68\00:52:56.77 if there is somebody that needs it, 00:52:56.80\00:52:58.19 I want to-- I want to help. 00:52:58.22\00:53:01.05 Somebody you're saying, you know, Dwight, 00:53:01.08\00:53:02.23 I really need to come to the savior, 00:53:02.26\00:53:04.58 I mean, he died for me. 00:53:04.61\00:53:05.80 This thing really hit me, those seven trios, 00:53:05.83\00:53:08.02 they're just-- it's inescapable. 00:53:08.05\00:53:10.19 He did this in advance for me. 00:53:10.22\00:53:12.72 He signed the will and I am in it, 00:53:12.75\00:53:15.74 and I've never formally come to Jesus 00:53:15.77\00:53:17.91 and if that's you my friend 00:53:17.94\00:53:19.12 just put a little check mark here. 00:53:19.15\00:53:20.18 I'd like to begin, I'm gonna soon begin 00:53:20.21\00:53:21.60 a relationship with Jesus, I'll send you an email about 00:56:11.98\00:56:13.32 one of the most important groups of people 00:56:13.35\00:56:15.22 that make this ministry possible. 00:56:15.25\00:56:18.19 They are a team of people, 00:56:18.22\00:56:19.75 they are not afraid to get down into this thick of life itself. 00:56:19.78\00:56:23.40 Which is why you're going to find them 00:56:23.43\00:56:24.57 you will find them moving forward on their knees. 00:56:24.60\00:56:27.81 They are our prayer partners, 00:56:27.84\00:56:29.70 a group of men and women and young adults 00:56:29.73\00:56:32.82 who believe that this humble television ministry 00:56:32.85\00:56:35.65 has been raised up by God for such a time as this. 00:56:35.68\00:56:38.00 And so they pray earnestly, that God will use the preacher, 00:56:38.03\00:56:41.31 that God will use me, 00:56:41.34\00:56:42.37 that God will use the countless other volunteers 00:56:42.40\00:56:44.91 to spread the everlasting gospel 00:56:44.94\00:56:47.29
