to the web just this week 00:18:12.92\00:18:17.83 written by a sophomore at Duke University, 00:18:17.86\00:18:21.75 a young man named David Distenfeld 00:18:21.78\00:18:26.23 titled the essay, "You too can YouTube" 00:18:26.26\00:18:28.28 but seriously here we go. 00:18:28.31\00:18:30.34 Judson Laipply is my personal hero. 00:18:30.37\00:18:34.31 Sure, he's no New York City firefighter, 00:18:34.34\00:18:36.55 but he's a hero nonetheless. 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.40 You probably don't recognize his name, 00:18:38.43\00:18:40.07 but I'm sure everyone reading this has seen his work. 00:18:40.10\00:18:44.14 Judson is the star of the most viewed video on YouTube. 00:18:44.17\00:18:50.72 How many views does he have, you ask? 00:18:50.75\00:18:52.38 Well, to indicate the staggering enormity of this number, 00:18:52.41\00:18:55.44 I will activate my keyboard's caps lock feature 00:18:55.47\00:18:58.72 and give it to you before I give you the number. 00:18:58.75\00:19:02.73 I ego strength to put a video camera 00:19:22.72\00:19:26.61 in front of himself, push the record button 00:19:26.64\00:19:29.14 and do any thing you want and then upload it to YouTube. 00:19:29.17\00:19:33.82 I mean I'm telling you the truth, 00:19:33.85\00:19:35.41 you can be as nutty as a squirrel and end up 00:19:35.44\00:19:37.44 on YouTube, which is probably 00:19:37.47\00:19:39.47 what you are when you do. 00:19:39.50\00:19:43.08 You can take pictures of squirrels, 00:19:43.11\00:19:44.92 you can take pictures of your pets, 00:19:44.95\00:19:46.14 you you are ever going through a day 00:19:52.13\00:19:53.77 and you are really bummed out you are just feeling awful, 00:19:53.80\00:19:58.09 go on to YouTube and then type in laughing babies, 00:19:58.13\00:20:01.43 just type in laughing babies, you will leave on cloud nine, 00:20:01.46\00:20:05.81 you will be the happiest person on earth, 00:20:05.84\00:20:07.42 when that little baby is through. 00:20:07.45\00:20:10.42 So many way you can do that, 00:20:10.45\00:20:11.69 you put news clippings it's the most, 00:20:11.72\00:20:13.22 it is the most frequented video swap shop in the universe. 00:20:13.25\00:20:16.59 All right, so that's where Judson Laipply shows up. 00:20:16.62\00:20:19.59 How many people have visited Judson Laipply? 00:20:19.62\00:20:23.63 He has only recorded one video in his life 00:20:23.66\00:20:28.20 and he ended up on YouTube to indicate 00:20:28.23\00:20:31.77 and I may repeat that sentence, 00:20:31.80\00:20:32.84 to indicate the staggering enormity of this number, 00:20:32.87\00:20:34.60 I will not activate my keyboard's caps lock feature, 00:20:34.63\00:20:37.72 the number of viewers for Judson Laipply 00:20:37.75\00:20:40.04 81 million study guide today, 00:23:24.80\00:23:27.19 Hebrews 10:24, 25 is God's strongest 00:23:27.23\00:23:30.71 YouTube YouToo invitation, write there in please, 00:23:30.74\00:23:34.10 invitation - this is a strongest by known invitation 00:23:34.13\00:23:37.03 in anywhere in Holy Scriptures, 00:23:37.06\00:23:39.10 we're going to note in just a moment, 00:23:39.13\00:23:40.17 keep your pen moving. 00:23:40.20\00:23:41.25 The motto of Google's YouTube, 00:23:41.28\00:23:43.74 this is their - this is their motto "Broadcast Yourself" 00:23:43.77\00:23:46.87 all right, but the motto of God's 00:23:46.90\00:23:49.32 YouTube is "Bring Yourself," Bring Yourself. 00:23:49.35\00:23:54.28 What's that supposed to mean? 00:23:54.31\00:23:55.37 Let's take a closer look at this, 00:23:55.40\00:23:57.86 this little two liner that we just read together, 00:23:57.89\00:24:00.66 let's read it again Hebrews 10:24. 00:24:00.69\00:24:03.63 "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love 00:24:03.66\00:24:06.87 and good works, not forsaking the assembling 00:24:06.90\00:24:09.50 of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, 00:24:09.53\00:24:12.27 but exhorting one another, and so much the more 00:24:12.30\00:24:14.51 as you see the Day approaching." 00:24:14.54\00:24:16.78 Now listen guys, there is a single Greek word 00:24:16.81\00:24:20.81 that unlocks that entire line. 00:24:20.84\00:24:23.29 It's a lot of words in English assembling ourselves together. 00:24:23.32\00:24:28.59 All of that can be captured in one Greek word. 00:24:28.62\00:24:30.72 In fact jot this down where you see there in the study guide, 00:24:30.75\00:24:32.90 here is the one word, episunagoge. 00:24:32.93\00:24:35.43 Now epi means act and sunagoge means gathering together 00:24:35.46\00:24:38.97 I want you to look at that word sunagoge, 00:24:39.00\00:24:40.96 can you see an English word that comes out sunagoge? 00:24:40.99\00:24:43.56 What it would be ah? 00:24:43.59\00:24:45.70 Synagogue you got it. 00:24:45.73\00:24:46.76 Write it down, synagogue. 00:24:46.79\00:24:48.69 Clearly jot this down. 00:24:48.72\00:24:50.55 This word describes a gathering together 00:24:50.58\00:24:52.38 for worship, that's what you do in the synagogue, 00:24:52.41\00:24:54.92 so this has to be talking about weekly worship. 00:24:54.95\00:24:59.03 I need to remind you in case you've forgotten 00:24:59.06\00:25:00.72 that in the New Testament Jews and Christians often worshiped 00:25:00.75\00:25:04.64 in the very same place, always 00:25:04.67\00:25:07.39 on the very same day, in the New Testament. 00:25:07.42\00:25:10.04 In fact let me show you this. 00:25:10.07\00:25:11.33 Let's just go back to the story 00:25:11.36\00:25:13.07 of the New Testament church in the Book of Acts. 00:25:13.10\00:25:14.88 Put your ribbon right there in Hebrews 10, 00:25:14.91\00:25:17.32 we will be right back. 00:25:17.35\00:25:18.70 But Acts 13 I'll give you just a line or two from this history 00:25:18.73\00:25:24.50 that will show you that in fact there they are same place 00:25:24.53\00:25:30.03 same day, all right this is Acts 13 so Paul and Barnabas, 00:25:30.06\00:25:33.11 John, Mark has cut run and Paul and Barnabas 00:25:33.14\00:25:36.37 are staying together this is a - what they call Paul's 00:25:36.40\00:25:38.79 first missionary journey. 00:25:38.82\00:25:40.57 And verse 14 when they departed 00:25:40.60\00:25:42.92 from Perga, Paul and Barnabas, 00:25:42.95\00:25:44.34 they came to Antioch in Pisidia, 00:25:44.37\00:25:46.33 and they went into where? 00:25:46.36\00:25:49.16 They went into the synagogue on what day of the week? 00:25:49.19\00:25:51.31 On the Sabbath day and they sat down. 00:25:51.34\00:25:54.21 And obviously the ruler of the synagogue spots 00:25:54.24\00:25:58.38 these two gentlemen and anytime a stranger showed up 00:25:58.41\00:26:01.16 if they look like they were educated, 00:26:01.19\00:26:02.61 the word would go back to them as one of the ushers 00:26:02.64\00:26:06.39 took it back to Paul and Barnabas to either 00:26:06.42\00:26:07.92 of you have something to say and Paul was hoping 00:26:07.95\00:26:09.58 for that open door, he jumps to his feat 00:26:09.61\00:26:11.45 and Paul preaches from verse 16 00:26:11.48\00:26:14.61 all the way down to verse 41, all right. 00:26:14.64\00:26:17.73 As soon as the sermon is over. 00:26:17.76\00:26:19.62 Notice the next line verse 42, 00:26:19.65\00:26:22.41 "So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, 00:26:22.44\00:26:25.27 the Gentiles begged that these words 00:26:25.30\00:26:28.14 might be preached to them when? 00:26:28.17\00:26:31.72 Be preached to them in the next Sabbath." 00:26:31.75\00:26:33.58 All right, so that's just going to be a few Jews 00:26:33.61\00:26:35.66 to get-together in the next Sabbath. 00:26:35.69\00:26:36.72 No, drop down to verse 44. 00:26:36.75\00:26:38.15 And on the next Sabbath almost the whole city, 00:26:38.18\00:26:44.05 almost the whole city, came together 00:26:44.08\00:26:46.37 to hear the word of God. 00:26:46.40\00:26:48.38 Jews and Christian yep, yep, yep, 00:26:48.41\00:26:49.85 Gentiles and Jews yep, in fact turned towards Acts 17, 00:26:49.88\00:26:55.49 taking a look at the greatest Christian who ever lived, 00:26:55.52\00:26:58.01 what was his, what was his custom? 00:26:58.04\00:27:01.27 Acts 17:2, "Then Paul, as his custom was, 00:27:01.30\00:27:06.16 went in to them, where is he, 00:27:06.19\00:27:07.96 verse 1 says he is in the synagogue, 00:27:07.99\00:27:09.53 he went into them, and for three Sabbaths 00:27:09.56\00:27:12.98 reasoned with them from the Scriptures." 00:27:13.01\00:27:15.57 He says of course Dwight, if you want to reach to Jews 00:27:15.60\00:27:18.09 that's where you go, you go to the synagogue. 00:27:18.12\00:27:19.58 There are no Gentiles there. 00:27:19.61\00:27:20.64 Synagogues are only for Jews. 00:27:20.67\00:27:23.32 Oh my friend you don't want to jump too quickly 00:27:23.35\00:27:25.39 to that conclusion because go over to Chapter 18, 00:27:25.42\00:27:27.41 all right, just one, one column over 00:27:27.44\00:27:29.43 to Chapter 18, look at verse 4. 00:27:29.46\00:27:31.01 Now Paul is in Corinth. 00:27:31.04\00:27:32.40 "And he Paul reasoned in the synagogue 00:27:32.43\00:27:34.54 every Sabbath, and persuaded whom? 00:27:34.57\00:27:37.32 Both Jews and Greeks." 00:27:37.35\00:27:39.88 You are going to the synagogue. 00:27:39.91\00:27:41.18 If you believe in Almighty Creator God, 00:27:41.22\00:27:42.93 you are going to worship on that Almighty Creator God's day 00:27:42.96\00:27:45.47 and you will worship where others are worshiping 00:27:45.50\00:27:47.66 the same God on that same day. 00:27:47.69\00:27:49.43 So you are always, you are always 00:27:49.46\00:27:51.23 in the Sabbath in a synagogue, Jews and Gentiles alike. 00:27:51.26\00:27:54.68 In fact scribble it down, will you, 00:27:54.71\00:27:56.33 Throughout the New Testament Jews and Christians 00:27:56.36\00:27:58.28 worshiped together on the same Sabbath 00:27:58.31\00:28:00.89 and often in the same synagogue. 00:28:00.92\00:28:04.49 All right, so what's the-- what's the writer Hebrews 00:28:04.52\00:28:07.11 trying to tell us? 00:28:07.14\00:28:10.21 Go back to where you, put the bulletin or that ribbon, 00:28:10.24\00:28:12.41 let's look at Hebrews 10:24. 00:28:12.44\00:28:15.30 "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love 00:28:15.33\00:28:18.17 and good works, not forsaking 00:28:18.20\00:28:20.26 the assembling of ourselves together, 00:28:20.29\00:28:22.12 as is the manner of some is but exhorting one another, 00:28:22.15\00:28:25.28 and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." 00:28:25.31\00:28:29.44 You know what he is doing. 00:28:29.47\00:28:30.50 He simply to say, any question? Hey, 00:28:30.53\00:28:32.22 hey don't give up, don't, don't give up on worshiping 00:28:32.25\00:28:36.56 on the Sabbath don't you dare give up. 00:28:36.59\00:28:39.48 He is saying come on, do I, I don't see 00:28:39.51\00:28:40.71 a word about the Sabbath here. 00:28:40.74\00:28:42.83 We just, we just note there is a huge hint 00:28:42.86\00:28:44.78 with that word synagogue there because 00:28:44.81\00:28:47.30 that is where you meet to worship on the Sabbath 00:28:47.33\00:28:49.55 but there is one more hint, fascinating. 00:28:49.58\00:28:52.15 And one of our doctoral students here in Andrews University 00:28:52.18\00:28:54.33 who is working on his PhD in New Testament is in the thick 00:28:54.36\00:28:59.17 of his dissertation right now and he has shared this with me. 00:28:59.20\00:29:01.59 And I'm excited to be able to share with you, 00:29:01.62\00:29:03.38 it's my friend Erhard Gallos. 00:29:03.41\00:29:06.36 Now watch this. 00:29:06.39\00:29:07.63 You see the writer of Hebrews 00:29:07.66\00:29:09.12 has already dealt with the Sabbath. 00:29:09.15\00:29:12.65 Gallos in his-in his research is saying actually 00:29:12.68\00:29:15.87 if you note carefully chapter, Hebrews 4 and Hebrews 10 00:29:15.90\00:29:20.05 are parallel chapters and he shared with me, 00:29:20.08\00:29:23.17 there are three major ways in which it is clear by the syntax 00:29:23.20\00:29:26.58 and the semantics that these two chapters are intended 00:29:26.61\00:29:29.64 by the writer to be parallel. 00:29:29.67\00:29:32.19 So that what get started in Chapter 4 00:29:32.22\00:29:34.22 gets finished in Chapter 10. 00:29:34.25\00:29:36.54 Now this is fascinating, this is cutting edge. Watch this. 00:29:36.57\00:29:39.96 I take you back to Chapter 4. 00:29:39.99\00:29:41.70 So here in 10 but just go back for a moment to Chapter 4 00:29:41.73\00:29:45.39 where the writer talks about the seventh day Sabbath. 00:29:45.42\00:29:47.79 Yep, he does. 00:29:47.82\00:29:49.32 Hebrews 4: drop down to verse 4. 00:29:49.35\00:29:51.69 "For He God has spoken in a certain place 00:29:51.72\00:29:54.16 of the seventh day in this way. 00:29:54.19\00:29:55.69 And God rested on the seventh day 00:29:55.72\00:29:58.82 from all His works." 00:29:58.85\00:30:00.66 And the writer has taken, has taken verse 2 00:30:00.69\00:30:03.27 straight out of Genesis 2 and he say, 00:30:03.30\00:30:04.44 hey remember the creation story, 00:30:04.47\00:30:05.72 that's what I'm talking about the seventh day Sabbath. 00:30:05.75\00:30:08.22 Now taking the divine model of resting 00:30:08.25\00:30:11.08 on the seventh day Sabbath, The writer then turns 00:30:11.11\00:30:13.59 to his readers and he said, hey guys, 00:30:13.62\00:30:15.37 we got to do the same. 00:30:15.40\00:30:16.76 Drop down to verse 9 so "There remains therefore 00:30:16.79\00:30:21.62 a rest for the people of God." 00:30:21.65\00:30:27.77 I need you to get this down and I'm, 00:30:27.80\00:30:29.64 and it's in your study guide, so you can boot on this later. 00:30:29.67\00:30:32.21 This is the only place, jot it down, 00:30:32.24\00:30:34.05 This is the only place in the New Testament 00:30:34.08\00:30:36.34 and in the Old Testament Greek which would be the Septuagint, 00:30:36.37\00:30:39.57 this is the only place where that word sabbatismos 00:30:39.60\00:30:43.41 where that word is used, no where else. 00:30:43.44\00:30:47.49 Now the word is actually used in extra biblical literature, 00:30:47.52\00:30:50.12 that means literature outside of the Bible and it always 00:30:50.15\00:30:52.56 describes jot it down, Sabbath keeping. 00:30:52.59\00:30:56.40 So he is talking about Sabbath keeping and the NIV 00:30:56.43\00:30:59.66 therefore correctly translates it, 00:30:59.69\00:31:01.19 let's put it on the screen there. 00:31:01.22\00:31:02.43 "There remains, then, a Sabbath - rest 00:31:02.46\00:31:06.93 for the people of God." 00:31:06.96\00:31:08.10 Then the writer says, hey, I'm talking to you 00:31:08.13\00:31:09.97 and he goes on to verse 10. 00:31:10.00\00:31:11.28 "For he or she who has entered into God's rest has himself 00:31:11.31\00:31:15.26 also ceased from his works as God as God did from His." 00:31:15.29\00:31:20.04 Jot it down. The writer of Hebrews is saying, hey, 00:31:20.07\00:31:22.34 all of you who are reading, 00:31:22.37\00:31:25.28 we also must rest from our work even as God did, 00:31:25.31\00:31:28.99 we must rest from our work on the same seventh day Sabbath. 00:31:29.02\00:31:32.00 The writer is making a pitch for the seventh day Sabbath 00:31:32.03\00:31:37.92 and then here is the, here is the stunning conclusion. 00:31:37.95\00:31:41.28 Erhard and it's in the study guide for you. 00:31:41.31\00:31:43.11 "Erhard Gallos' doctoral research is suggesting 00:31:43.14\00:31:45.49 that in chapters 4 and 10 the writer of Hebrews 00:31:45.52\00:31:48.60 is appealing to his readers to neither give up 00:31:48.63\00:31:51.32 the day of Sabbath rest, that's chapter 4 nor the way 00:31:51.35\00:31:55.98 of Sabbath worship, that's chapter 10, 00:31:56.01\00:31:58.74 they are bound together, just locked. 00:31:58.77\00:32:01.36 By the way evidential proof that the seventh-day Sabbath 00:32:01.39\00:32:03.91 is the only day of rest divinely continence in the entire 00:32:03.94\00:32:08.20 New Testament because Hebrews is written just months 00:32:08.23\00:32:11.78 before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. 00:32:11.81\00:32:14.30 It is still big that day of rest 00:32:14.33\00:32:17.77 in the New Testament church, wow. 00:32:17.80\00:32:22.16 So now, how do we know that? 00:32:22.19\00:32:24.45 Let's read that, that little twosome 00:32:24.48\00:32:26.36 again here in Chapter 10:24, 00:32:26.39\00:32:28.89 "And let us consider one another 00:32:28.92\00:32:30.45 in order to stir up love and good works." 00:32:30.48\00:32:32.62 Verse 25, "Not forsaking the assembling 00:32:32.65\00:32:35.15 of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, 00:32:35.18\00:32:37.89 but exhorting one another, and so much the more 00:32:37.92\00:32:40.58 as you see the Day approaching." 00:32:40.61\00:32:42.91 Ladies and gentlemen write it down, 00:32:42.94\00:32:44.17 the appeal of Hebrews 10:25 for Christians is simply. 00:32:44.20\00:32:48.26 Let us not give up coming together 00:32:48.29\00:32:51.49 to worship God on the Sabbath day. 00:32:51.52\00:32:55.29 That's the appeal. 00:32:55.32\00:32:58.10 And by the way the keyword jot this down as well, 00:32:58.13\00:33:00.94 the key word is together, together, together. 00:33:00.97\00:33:08.66 Few months before the end of World War II, 00:33:08.69\00:33:11.13 C S Lewis, everybody knows C S Lewis, 00:33:11.16\00:33:13.54 the brilliant Christian apologist of last century, 00:33:13.57\00:33:16.87 C S Lewis, who was an atheist. 00:33:16.90\00:33:19.59 Like the young man who read the testimony this morning 00:33:19.62\00:33:21.52 an atheist, C S Lewis was an atheist 00:33:21.55\00:33:23.41 converted found Jesus Christ and became 00:33:23.44\00:33:25.44 a radical disciple of the Savior. 00:33:25.47\00:33:27.80 C S Lewis just a few months before 00:33:27.83\00:33:29.49 the end of World War II, he is a Britisher. 00:33:29.52\00:33:31.66 So he is in a large, he is in the headquarters 00:33:31.69\00:33:33.84 to a large manufacturing firm in Sussex, England. 00:33:33.87\00:33:36.89 And they have asked and talked about the Christian 00:33:36.92\00:33:39.17 immersed in industry and at the end 00:33:39.20\00:33:41.31 of his little talk he says okay, any question. 00:33:41.34\00:33:43.90 We have the record of the question 00:33:43.93\00:33:45.50 that were asked to C S Lewis 00:33:45.53\00:33:46.90 and one of those questions was this. 00:33:46.93\00:33:49.39 Is attendance at a place of worship or membership 00:33:49.42\00:33:53.37 with the Christian community necessary 00:33:53.40\00:33:55.57 to a Christian way of life? 00:33:55.60\00:33:57.37 I - do I have to go church? 00:33:57.41\00:33:59.14 Come on do I have to go to church to be a good Christian? 00:33:59.17\00:34:04.22 Lewis' answer will surprise you. 00:34:04.25\00:34:06.60 I'll put it on the screen for you. 00:34:06.63\00:34:07.80 That's a question which I cannot answer. 00:34:07.83\00:34:11.65 My own experience is that when I first became a Christian, 00:34:11.68\00:34:14.56 about fourteen years ago, "I thought that I could 00:34:14.59\00:34:17.02 do it on my own, by retiring to my rooms and reading theology, 00:34:17.05\00:34:22.13 and I wouldn't go the churches and Gospel Halls." 00:34:22.16\00:34:25.27 Hey wait a minute, does that sound familiar?
