00:22:28.53\00:22:31.59 and courage burning brightly through Christ our Lord, 00:22:31.62\00:22:35.55 we pray, amen. 00:22:35.58\00:22:37.98 Be seated, please. 00:22:38.01\00:22:39.04 I love that story of hers 00:22:46.52\00:22:50.69 that comes out of this immense catastrophe. 00:22:50.72\00:22:56.27 This past week in central Italy 00:22:56.30\00:23:00.38 98-year-old Maria D'Antuono 00:23:00.41\00:23:04.53 was asleep when that 6.3 magnitude earthquake 00:23:04.56\00:23:09.27 struck her tiny little village of Tempera. 00:23:09.30\00:23:12.51 And for 30, count them, 00:23:12.54\00:23:14.55 30 long, dark, interminable hours 00:23:14.58\00:23:20.56 she was trapped beneath the rubble of her stone house. 00:23:20.59\00:23:26.90 So you can imagine the roaring cheer that goes up 00:23:26.93\00:23:32.14 when that crowd of onlookers watching those rescuers claw 00:23:32.17\00:23:36.58 through the debris to find that trapped lady. 00:23:36.61\00:23:41.49 A cheer the goes up as they bring her out alive and well. 00:23:41.52\00:23:46.36 As they are carrying her out 00:23:46.39\00:23:47.89 somebody in the crowd called out to her, 00:23:47.92\00:23:50.03 asking, what she did to while away those hours 00:23:50.06\00:23:53.97 while she was waiting for somebody to rescue her? 00:23:54.00\00:23:57.14 And the 98-year-old matriarch shot back 00:23:57.17\00:24:00.45 why I crocheting of course. 00:24:00.48\00:24:04.05 When I heard that I said 00:24:04.08\00:24:05.15 how could it be the world is coming down around you 00:24:05.18\00:24:08.11 and she's found something 00:24:08.14\00:24:09.47 with those hooks and the yarn and wool 00:24:09.50\00:24:11.79 and she's just crocheting, they'll come, they'll come. 00:24:11.82\00:24:16.39 I love the London Guardians write observation 00:24:16.42\00:24:19.45 whatever falls Maria D'Antuono 00:24:19.48\00:24:22.19 may have wasting time is not one of them. 00:24:22.22\00:24:26.22 And by the way there's more to the story. 00:24:26.25\00:24:28.43 As they're taking her to the waiting ambulance 00:24:28.46\00:24:32.21 great Grandma Maria had one more 00:24:32.24\00:24:34.41 astonishing line for the onlookers 00:24:34.44\00:24:36.30 when she called out "does anybody have a comb, 00:24:36.33\00:24:40.29 I want to get this dust out of my hair 00:24:40.32\00:24:41.99 before I go to the hospital." 00:24:42.02\00:24:44.00 Leading the Guardian to quip. 00:24:44.03\00:24:45.50 There is new meaning to that Italian phrase 00:24:49.34\00:24:52.39 "bella figura" keeping up appearances. 00:24:52.42\00:24:56.41 I tell you what a glad story 00:24:56.44\00:24:58.40 particularly when you remember 00:24:58.43\00:25:00.20 how utterly sad that catastrophe. 00:25:00.23\00:25:02.15 I saw the news last night 215 coffins 00:25:02.18\00:25:06.52 lined up beside each other in the plaza 00:25:06.55\00:25:09.49 of that devastated city 00:25:09.52\00:25:11.58 for a corporate funeral service. 00:25:11.61\00:25:15.05 And now here is the story. 00:25:15.08\00:25:16.22 You know it's an "almost resurrection story." 00:25:16.25\00:25:19.13 You think about it, she was underground 00:25:19.16\00:25:20.99 for nearly as long as Christ was 00:25:21.02\00:25:24.17 and she comes out, out of that rubble 00:25:24.20\00:25:26.65 and debris she comes out alive. 00:25:26.68\00:25:30.20 Have you ever noticed in reading 00:25:30.23\00:25:31.48 the resurrection account in the New Testament 00:25:31.51\00:25:34.03 how scarce I mean almost absent 00:25:34.06\00:25:38.47 is any detail about Jesus resurrection. 00:25:38.50\00:25:42.55 I mean, I understand why number one, 00:25:42.58\00:25:44.35 they gonna arrive when assistance set 00:25:44.38\00:25:45.51 for those fainting Roman guards 00:25:45.54\00:25:48.34 and number two, how could you possibly describe 00:25:48.37\00:25:51.42 this near fishing movement 00:25:51.45\00:25:54.06 when divinity explodes at human house 00:25:54.09\00:25:56.76 back to life again 00:25:56.79\00:25:58.16 but no details except from Matthew. 00:25:58.19\00:26:01.36 The only details we have at the actual resurrection 00:26:01.39\00:26:04.34 are found here in Matthew. 00:26:04.37\00:26:05.43 I want to go to Matthew account. 00:26:05.46\00:26:07.19 Find your gospels please open your Bible 00:26:07.22\00:26:11.01 to the gospel of Saint Matthew Chapter 28. 00:26:11.04\00:26:13.85 If you didn't bring up Bible with you on this Easter weekend 00:26:13.88\00:26:17.99 grab the pew Bible in front of you 00:26:18.02\00:26:19.92 open it with us that will be the New King James, 00:26:19.95\00:26:21.83 I will be in the TNIV. 00:26:21.86\00:26:24.18 Well, let's go to Matthew's account 00:26:24.21\00:26:25.53 the only gospel with any word at all about 00:26:25.56\00:26:28.53 what happened early that Sunday morning. 00:26:28.56\00:26:31.45 Matthew Chapter 28, pew Bible its page 672, 00:26:31.48\00:26:37.83 Matthew Chapter 28. 00:26:37.86\00:26:40.05 All right, read the account once again verse 1. 00:26:40.08\00:26:47.95 "After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, 00:26:47.98\00:26:52.53 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary 00:26:52.56\00:26:54.54 went to look at the tomb." 00:26:54.57\00:26:55.89 Verse 2 "There was a violent earthquake" 00:26:55.92\00:26:59.18 that's how we know there was one 00:26:59.21\00:27:00.27 there was a violent earthquake, 00:27:00.30\00:27:02.61 "for an angle of the Lord came down from heaven 00:27:02.64\00:27:05.72 and, going to the tomb, 00:27:05.75\00:27:06.78 rolled back the stone and sat on it." 00:27:06.81\00:27:08.68 Can you see Him? 00:27:08.71\00:27:11.11 Just flick that thing to the side 00:27:11.14\00:27:12.44 and then sits on it, I need a chair and sat on it. 00:27:12.47\00:27:17.37 Now verse 3 "His appearance was like lightning." 00:27:17.40\00:27:21.54 Now we ask them humdinger lightening storm 00:27:21.57\00:27:23.61 is here in Michigan 00:27:23.64\00:27:24.67 and if you're at you know how bright that white light is. 00:27:24.70\00:27:27.99 "His appearance was like lightning, 00:27:28.02\00:27:29.86 and his clothes were white as snow." 00:27:29.89\00:27:31.36 Verse 4 "The guards were so afraid of him 00:27:31.39\00:27:33.37 that they shook and became like dead men." 00:27:33.40\00:27:37.19 Gone, they're down. 00:27:37.22\00:27:38.59 I want to read you another account. 00:27:41.72\00:27:45.76 It feels like an eye witness account. 00:27:45.79\00:27:47.71 This is from the classic on the life of Jesus 00:27:47.74\00:27:49.83 called Desire of Ages. 00:27:49.86\00:27:51.84 Let me just read a line or two to kind of set this up today. 00:27:51.87\00:27:56.10 "The night of the first day 00:27:56.13\00:27:57.16 of the week had worn slowly away. 00:27:57.19\00:27:59.66 The darkest hour, just before daybreak, had come. 00:27:59.69\00:28:01.97 Christ was still a prisoner in His narrow tomb. 00:28:02.00\00:28:04.77 The great stone was in its place, 00:28:04.80\00:28:06.88 the Roman seal was unbroken, 00:28:06.91\00:28:08.24 the Roman guards were keeping their watch." 00:28:08.27\00:28:10.76 As you'll see this afternoon in the passion. 00:28:10.79\00:28:14.66 "And there were unseen watchers. 00:28:14.69\00:28:18.82 Hosts of evil angels were gathered about the place. 00:28:18.85\00:28:22.78 Had it been possible, 00:28:22.81\00:28:23.84 the prince of darkness with his apostate army 00:28:23.87\00:28:26.12 would have kept forever sealed the tomb 00:28:26.15\00:28:27.57 that held the Son of God." 00:28:27.60\00:28:28.88 You bet nobody is coming here this is our piece of earth. 00:28:28.91\00:28:33.69 Had it been possible it would have. 00:28:33.72\00:28:35.71 I love this. 00:28:35.74\00:28:36.77 "But a heavenly host surrounded the sepulcher. 00:28:36.80\00:28:40.66 Angels that excel in strength" you have a guardian besides you 00:28:40.69\00:28:44.84 let me tell you my friend, 00:28:44.87\00:28:46.57 if that angel chose to reveal himself 00:28:46.60\00:28:48.92 what happened to the guards 00:28:48.95\00:28:50.01 would happen to whoever is harassing you. 00:28:50.04\00:28:52.51 You are always under the care of an angel 00:28:52.54\00:28:55.68 who excels in strength no matter 00:28:55.71\00:28:58.94 what the evil one may whisper you. 00:28:58.97\00:29:02.47 You have a stronger unseen companion. 00:29:02.50\00:29:06.77 "Angels that excel in strength regarding the tomb 00:29:06.80\00:29:09.47 and waiting to welcome the Prince of life." 00:29:09.50\00:29:11.43 And then there is this earthquake 00:29:11.46\00:29:12.89 and the quote from Matthew that we just read. 00:29:12.92\00:29:16.04 "Clothed with the panoply of God, this angel." 00:29:16.07\00:29:18.70 Okay, the angel that came down. 00:29:18.73\00:29:19.85 "This angel left the heavenly courts. 00:29:19.88\00:29:21.78 The bright beams of God's glory went before him, 00:29:21.81\00:29:24.50 and illuminated his pathway." 00:29:24.53\00:29:25.89 So you have this angel just shooting down, just-- 00:29:25.92\00:29:30.48 but in front of him it's just like 00:29:30.51\00:29:32.19 it's like a waterfall of light. 00:29:32.22\00:29:35.02 This light is just cascading in front of him 00:29:35.05\00:29:36.99 and he's swallowing that light trap 00:29:37.02\00:29:39.25 all the way down to that guarded sepulcher. 00:29:39.28\00:29:41.56 "The earth trembles." 00:29:44.56\00:29:46.05 As the angels are approaching the earth trembles. 00:29:46.08\00:29:48.48 "The hosts of darkness flee, and as he rolls away the stone, 00:29:48.51\00:29:52.29 heaven seems to come down to the earth. 00:29:52.32\00:29:53.76 The soldiers see him removing the stone 00:29:53.79\00:29:56.38 as he would a pebble and they hear the angel cry, 00:29:56.41\00:30:01.47 Son of God, come forth, Thy Father calls Thee. 00:30:01.50\00:30:04.99 They see Jesus come forth from the grave, 00:30:05.02\00:30:06.97 and hear Him proclaim over the rent sepulcher, 00:30:07.00\00:30:10.51 'I am the resurrection, and the life.' 00:30:10.54\00:30:14.98 And as He comes forth in majesty and glory." 00:30:15.01\00:30:17.21 Oh, if there had only been a security camera 00:30:17.24\00:30:19.23 that have been turned on that day 00:30:19.26\00:30:20.53 we'd to have the pictures of that night. 00:30:20.56\00:30:23.67 Watch this, "As He comes forth 00:30:23.70\00:30:25.88 in majesty and glory, the angel host." 00:30:25.91\00:30:29.53 He is commander and chief of this whole army. 00:30:29.56\00:30:33.24 "The angel host bow low in adoration 00:30:33.27\00:30:38.17 before the Redeemer, 00:30:38.20\00:30:41.26 and welcome Him with songs of praise." 00:30:41.29\00:30:45.60 One line more. 00:30:45.63\00:30:46.67 "He who had vanquished death and the grave 00:30:46.70\00:30:49.08 came forth from the tomb with the tread of a conqueror, 00:30:49.11\00:30:52.16 amid the reeling of the earth, the flashing of lightning, 00:30:52.19\00:30:55.19 and the roaring of thunder." 00:30:55.22\00:30:57.72 This was not shh... it's not one of those. 00:30:57.75\00:31:02.39 This was an explosive nuclear moment. 00:31:02.42\00:31:07.61 Jerusalem slept through it but nobody there 00:31:07.64\00:31:12.38 that predawn moment would ever forget. 00:31:12.41\00:31:17.34 Let's be honest the story of Easter 00:31:17.37\00:31:20.44 is not the easiest story in the world 00:31:20.47\00:31:22.97 to believe, come on. 00:31:23.00\00:31:26.57 Naturalism that's this philosophical worldview 00:31:26.60\00:31:31.15 that says "there is no supernatural 00:31:31.18\00:31:32.95 and we will not let there be." 00:31:32.98\00:31:34.14 That's what naturalism is. 00:31:34.17\00:31:35.20 Naturalism rules the American Academy, 00:31:35.23\00:31:38.21 the entertainment industry the secular media. 00:31:38.24\00:31:41.08 Secular godlessness is the name of the game and I will tell you 00:31:41.11\00:31:43.67 what Christian faith and Christian's faith-- 00:31:43.70\00:31:48.78 it's tough, this is not an easy story to believe in. 00:31:48.81\00:31:53.57 That's why I am particularly invigorated by this book 00:31:53.60\00:31:56.48 I am reading right now written by Timothy Keller. 00:31:56.51\00:31:58.48 Let me give you the title of the book, 00:31:58.51\00:32:00.53 "The Reason for God, 00:32:00.56\00:32:01.86 Belief in an Age of Skepticism." 00:32:01.89\00:32:04.41 And the reason I am finding 00:32:04.44\00:32:05.47 this such an inspiring read this because 00:32:05.50\00:32:07.25 I know little bit about the author. 00:32:07.28\00:32:08.80 The author has spent 20-years in New York City in Manhattan. 00:32:08.83\00:32:12.91 You seen your pastor 00:32:12.94\00:32:13.97 of the Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 00:32:14.00\00:32:15.58 he raised up that church 20-years ago 00:32:15.61\00:32:17.31 with his wife and two little girls 00:32:17.34\00:32:18.75 they now are spread out 00:32:18.78\00:32:19.81 6,000 worshippers all over the city. 00:32:19.84\00:32:22.02 They have daughter churches around the world. 00:32:22.05\00:32:23.73 He is dealt with the bright young minds of New York 00:32:23.76\00:32:27.97 dealing with skeptics he writes this book. 00:32:28.00\00:32:30.73 I want to put a line on the screen for you. 00:32:30.76\00:32:32.90 He is challenging, Keller is challenging 00:32:32.93\00:32:34.59 the skeptic challenger. 00:32:34.62\00:32:36.14 Read this on the screen 00:32:36.17\00:32:37.20 "The only way to doubt Christianity rightly" 00:32:37.23\00:32:39.18 okay so you got some questions, let me tell you doubt it. 00:32:39.21\00:32:41.82 "The only way to doubt Christianity rightly and fairly 00:32:41.85\00:32:44.83 is to discern the alternate belief 00:32:44.86\00:32:46.83 under each of your doubts 00:32:46.86\00:32:48.26 and then to ask yourself 00:32:48.29\00:32:49.52 what reasons you have for believing it." 00:32:49.55\00:32:51.67 Come on?
