00:20:30.07\00:20:33.03 Huh? 00:20:33.06\00:20:34.10 So what am I supposed to do with the Sabbath, 00:20:34.13\00:20:36.85 so what's this day for? 24 hours, so what? 00:20:36.88\00:20:41.16 God's Party is the searching -for-the-answer to the, 00:20:41.19\00:20:44.52 so what, question that we rightfully ask. 00:20:44.55\00:20:47.73 So let's get going, open your Bible now 00:20:47.76\00:20:49.87 please to the second book of the Bible. 00:20:49.90\00:20:51.90 One ancient line, two dynamic verses. 00:20:51.93\00:20:55.68 One ancient line, two dynamic verses in the second book, 00:20:55.71\00:20:58.94 that would be the book of Exodus. 00:20:58.97\00:21:00.07 Find Exodus 31, please. You didn't bring a Bible? 00:21:00.10\00:21:03.76 We've got a pew Bible for you, 00:21:03.79\00:21:04.91 it'll be the same translation that I have. 00:21:04.94\00:21:07.03 Here, The New King James, 00:21:07.06\00:21:08.09 which will also be on the screen this morning. 00:21:08.12\00:21:10.32 Exodus 31, just one line, just one line, 00:21:10.35\00:21:15.53 and it's God and Moses having a private conversation together 00:21:15.56\00:21:18.30 and God is doing the talking right now, 00:21:18.33\00:21:20.77 and He's talking about the Sabbath. 00:21:20.80\00:21:22.81 This is dynamite, all right. 00:21:22.84\00:21:24.45 Genesis chapter-- 00:21:24.48\00:21:25.51 I mean Exodus rather, Exodus 31:17, 00:21:25.54\00:21:28.96 "It" the Sabbath, God's speaking, 00:21:28.99\00:21:31.25 "It is a sign between Me 00:21:31.28\00:21:34.13 and the children of Israel forever" 00:21:34.16\00:21:36.87 and hit the pause button right there 00:21:36.90\00:21:38.36 because some of you as soon as you hear that you say, 00:21:38.39\00:21:40.20 ah, I told you, I told you, Dwight, 00:21:40.23\00:21:43.13 that the Sabbath is something between God and Israel. 00:21:43.16\00:21:46.38 I am not a Jew so I-- the Sabbath 00:21:46.41\00:21:49.00 is not applicable to me and my journey. 00:21:49.03\00:21:52.34 Hold it, hold it, hold it. 00:21:52.37\00:21:54.06 You must be very careful with that kind of logic. 00:21:54.09\00:21:56.15 Watch where this logic will take you, 00:21:56.18\00:21:57.74 if you hang on to that logic. 00:21:57.77\00:21:59.64 Do you know with whom God made the new covenant? 00:21:59.67\00:22:03.84 Everybody is clear that new covenant's for Christians, 00:22:03.87\00:22:05.61 new covenant's for the whole world. 00:22:05.64\00:22:07.10 God made the new covenant, isn't that right? 00:22:07.13\00:22:08.85 Everybody is under the new covenant. 00:22:08.88\00:22:10.99 Let me show you something. 00:22:11.02\00:22:12.15 With whom did God make the new covenant? 00:22:12.18\00:22:13.69 Let's go to the New Testament and find out. 00:22:13.72\00:22:15.16 Hebrews 8:8, "Behold, the days are coming, 00:22:15.19\00:22:18.27 says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant." 00:22:18.30\00:22:20.42 With whom? 00:22:20.45\00:22:22.00 "With the house of Israel and with the house of Judah." 00:22:22.03\00:22:25.85 Wait a minute, time out, time out. 00:22:25.88\00:22:27.96 I thought the new covenant was for everybody, it is. 00:22:27.99\00:22:31.61 Because when God says Israel, 00:22:31.64\00:22:33.03 He's talking about all His friends 00:22:33.06\00:22:35.46 through out all of history, all over the earth. 00:22:35.49\00:22:39.06 And that, by the way, 00:22:39.09\00:22:40.21 is the truth about the Sabbath. 00:22:40.24\00:22:41.79 It's for everybody. 00:22:41.82\00:22:42.99 From the very beginning, 00:22:43.02\00:22:44.07 in fact, scribble this down, will you? 00:22:44.10\00:22:45.46 "The same people God makes the covenant with 00:22:45.49\00:22:47.92 He gives the Sabbath to 00:22:47.95\00:22:49.52 - 'Israel' represents all his people forever." 00:22:49.55\00:22:53.45 God makes the new covenant with His people, 00:22:53.48\00:22:54.86 that's for whom the Sabbath was created as well. 00:22:54.89\00:22:58.51 All right, so lets go back to that verse now, 00:22:58.54\00:23:00.01 Exodus 31:17, "The Sabbath is a sign 00:23:00.04\00:23:02.70 between Me and all my people forever." 00:23:02.73\00:23:06.53 Somewhere we can read that. Now keep reading. 00:23:06.56\00:23:08.61 "For in six days the Lord made 00:23:08.64\00:23:10.64 the heavens and the earth, 00:23:10.67\00:23:12.38 and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." 00:23:12.41\00:23:17.48 One ancient line, two dynamic verbs, 00:23:17.51\00:23:19.45 write it down verb, dynamic verb number one, 00:23:19.48\00:23:22.61 He was refreshed, well take them reverse order, 00:23:22.64\00:23:24.74 He was refreshed. 00:23:24.77\00:23:26.08 Keep your pen moving 00:23:26.11\00:23:27.14 because the Hebrew verb here for refreshed is "naphash", 00:23:27.17\00:23:30.50 it means to take a breath. 00:23:30.53\00:23:33.86 Which is why, by the way, the New Jerusalem Bible, 00:23:33.89\00:23:35.84 and I put this in the study guide for you, 00:23:35.87\00:23:37.14 the New Jerusalem Bible renders this, 00:23:37.17\00:23:38.98 "but on the seventh day He rested and drew breath." 00:23:39.01\00:23:45.36 Some of us enjoy running. 00:23:45.39\00:23:48.27 And we all know that there are times 00:23:48.30\00:23:49.47 when enjoy is just a euphemism for endure. 00:23:49.50\00:23:52.94 Well, everybody knows that. It's all up here. 00:37:01.48\00:37:05.85 Exodus, go back to 31:17, The Sabbath God says, 00:37:05.88\00:37:11.80 "It is a sign between Me and my friends forever." 00:37:11.83\00:37:15.40 "For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, 00:37:15.43\00:37:18.45 and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." 00:37:18.48\00:37:22.41 There it is dynamic verb number two. 00:37:22.44\00:37:24.29 There are only two of them, write it down, 00:37:24.32\00:37:25.35 number two, "rested." 00:37:25.38\00:37:27.34 Number two is rested. 00:37:27.37\00:37:28.82 Now interesting on the Hebrew word here, very interesting. 00:37:28.85\00:37:31.72 The Hebrew word here for rest is Shabath, 00:37:31.75\00:37:35.50 from whence comes our word Sabbath or Sabbath. 00:37:35.53\00:37:39.17 But notice a literal meaning of the word, rest. 00:37:39.20\00:37:42.75 It actually means to cease or desist. 00:37:42.78\00:37:46.97 So that when God rested on the Sabbath 00:37:47.00\00:37:48.80 he just ceased what he has been doing the previous six days. 00:37:48.83\00:37:51.76 That explains why I can say God rested. 00:37:51.79\00:37:53.80 I mean do you think that Creator came 00:37:53.83\00:37:54.87 to that seventh day and said, man, guys, 00:37:54.90\00:37:56.36 this is, this was hard work, 00:37:56.39\00:37:58.33 can somebody give us a day off or something right now. 00:37:58.36\00:38:01.19 Can you imagine Him out of breath 00:38:01.22\00:38:02.31 that I got to recharge my batteries. 00:38:02.34\00:38:05.62 Didn't need it at all. 00:38:05.65\00:38:07.32 Do you know what, God gave less than a dozen commands. 00:38:07.35\00:38:10.64 Creation week, that's not going to wear you out. 00:38:10.67\00:38:12.49 And two human sculptures, 00:38:12.52\00:38:14.27 that would take a little bit of time 00:38:14.30\00:38:15.50 but it's not going to wear you out. 00:38:15.53\00:38:19.02 But the word rested means to cease and desist, 00:38:19.05\00:38:23.88 He quit doing what He had been doing 00:38:23.91\00:38:26.50 those six days on the seventh day. 00:38:26.53\00:38:30.89 Right, jot that down, will you? 00:38:30.92\00:38:31.95 When God rested on the Sabbath, 00:38:31.98\00:38:33.03 He simply ceased doing 00:38:33.06\00:38:34.53 what he'd been doing all week long 00:38:34.56\00:38:36.15 and that's why ladies and gentlemen, 00:38:36.18\00:38:37.70 He invites us to do the same in the fourth commandment 00:38:37.73\00:38:40.05 of the Ten Commandments. 00:38:40.08\00:38:41.13 When He's talking about the Seventh day Sabbath 00:38:41.16\00:38:42.50 He says, listen guys, don't work, take a break. 00:38:42.53\00:38:44.76 Give it a rest. Slow down, slow down. 00:38:44.79\00:38:50.38 Cease and desist, 00:38:50.41\00:38:52.09 that's what I did when I made you. 00:38:52.12\00:38:54.75 That's what I want you to do when you come to me. 00:38:54.78\00:38:56.55 Just slow down. 00:38:56.58\00:39:00.14 I'm not against work, God says. 00:39:00.17\00:39:02.12 I've made you to work. 00:39:02.15\00:39:04.37 You're a strong worker, you're a hard worker 00:39:04.40\00:39:06.36 and I'm proud of you for it. 00:39:06.39\00:39:07.51 But there comes a time when you got to cut-- 00:39:07.54\00:39:08.90 you got to stop, just take a break. 00:39:08.93\00:39:12.51 We'll call it my Sabbath. 00:39:12.54\00:39:14.27 You and me, cease and desisted. 00:39:14.30\00:39:17.53 Yeah, but what's the deal about ceasing?
