00:03:31.84\00:03:35.61 Has laid on him 00:03:35.64\00:03:42.98 The iniquity 00:04:03.91\00:04:10.21 Of 00:04:10.25\00:04:17.59 Us all 00:04:17.62\00:04:22.76 Let's pray. 00:04:34.57\00:04:36.67 Oh, God, we do need that gospel 24/7, 00:04:36.71\00:04:39.71 it's the best news there is in the universe. 00:04:39.74\00:04:42.58 We who have gonna stray, 00:04:42.61\00:04:44.15 You've taken all our to know that good news, it is simply not enough. 00:04:57.76\00:05:01.30 Teach us this morning through Holy Scripture. 00:05:01.33\00:05:04.60 We will listen to You in the name of Jesus. 00:05:04.63\00:05:08.97 Amen. 00:05:09.00\00:05:11.24 Do you realize that this morning, 00:05:11.27\00:05:12.61 in this worshiping community, I mean right here right now, 00:05:12.64\00:05:16.34 there are four generations right here 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.35 and you're part of one of those generations. 00:05:18.38\00:05:21.35 We have the GI generation here today 00:05:21.38\00:05:24.22 that would be those born in the 20s and 30s. 00:05:24.25\00:05:27.29 We have the baby boomer generation here, 00:05:27.32\00:05:29.89 those born in the 40s and 50s. 00:05:29.92\00:05:32.86 We've got the Gen X generation here, 00:05:32.89\00:05:34.33 those born in the 60s and 70s. 00:05:34.36\00:05:35.96 And we have the millennials here, 00:05:36.00\00:05:37.33 those born in the 80s and 90s. 00:05:37.37\00:05:41.27 Three, count them, 00:05:41.30\00:05:43.51 three out of the four generations 00:05:43.54\00:05:46.14 have already conquered 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.68 a new frontier. 00:05:48.71\00:05:51.18 I want you to watch the screen for a moment. 00:05:51.21\00:05:52.55 We'll play some archived pictures 00:05:52.58\00:05:54.58 in a video clip about those frontiers. 00:05:54.62\00:05:57.15 Take a look at this. 00:05:57.19\00:05:58.52 Yeah, you started to clap too soon. 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.07 Three of the four generations here 00:06:52.11\00:06:53.58 have already conquered new frontiers. 00:06:53.61\00:06:55.24 In case you didn't catch it, 00:06:55.28\00:06:56.61 let me remind you what those new frontiers are. 00:06:56.64\00:06:58.41 The GI generation conquered inner space. 00:06:58.45\00:07:00.95 They didn't get very far. 00:07:00.98\00:07:02.32 You saw John Glenn ride stuff, not too far, 00:07:02.35\00:07:05.39 us baby boomers came along and then came outer space. 00:07:05.42\00:07:08.29 That was Neil Armstrong talking on that first step on the moon. 00:07:08.32\00:07:12.43 And then came Gen Xers and they discovered cyberspace. 00:07:12.46\00:07:15.66 But there's a fourth generation left. 00:07:18.67\00:07:21.90 And the question is, is there any space left 00:07:21.94\00:07:26.14 to conquer for the millennials? 00:07:26.17\00:07:29.14 And I'm not talking about my space. 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.05 All right, it's not what I'm talking about. 00:07:35.25\00:07:37.75 All right, there is an answer 00:07:40.89\00:07:43.22 and I believe the answer for the millennials is found 00:07:43.26\00:07:46.09 in a very long ago story. 00:07:46.13\00:07:50.33 At the very end of that long ago story, 00:07:50.37\00:07:53.64 there is an answer 00:07:53.67\00:07:55.00 and I want you to write it down. 00:07:55.04\00:07:56.37 Please write it down. 00:07:56.40\00:07:57.74 Take out your study guide that Write that down. 00:08:59.63\00:09:02.17 Gen Xers, what did they helped us conquer? 00:09:02.20\00:09:04.77 Cyberspace. 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.51 All right, now the millennials, put millennials up. 00:09:06.54\00:09:10.21 What are we going to put in that space, 00:09:10.25\00:09:12.55 that blank space? 00:09:12.58\00:09:14.75 There's another five letter word 00:09:14.78\00:09:16.28 that goes right in that blank space. 00:09:16.32\00:09:20.89 There's a Bible book that ends with a question. 00:09:20.92\00:09:24.96 And in that question, there is that five letter word, 00:09:24.99\00:09:28.90 don't even try to figure it out. 00:09:28.93\00:09:30.27 You won't guess it. 00:09:30.30\00:09:32.03 Open your Bibles instead with me, please, 00:09:32.07\00:09:33.77 to the Book of Jonah, a little tiny Book of Jonah. 00:09:33.80\00:09:36.07 That would be the Old Testament in the Minor Prophets. 00:09:36.10\00:09:39.87 And while you're finding that book, 00:09:39.91\00:09:43.35 I need to tell you that last Sabbath, 00:09:43.38\00:09:45.71 do you remember in the middle of my sermon last Sabbath? 00:09:45.75\00:09:47.88 I said, "Man, I can hardly wait till next week," 00:09:47.92\00:09:49.98 because we're going to share 00:09:50.02\00:09:51.49 from the only book in the Bible that ends with a question, 00:09:51.52\00:09:55.86 hallelujah. 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.23 And then I went ahead and preached 00:09:57.26\00:09:58.59 the last half of the sermon. 00:09:58.63\00:09:59.96 As soon as... This is in second service. 00:10:00.00\00:10:01.33 As soon as the sermon is over, I went down to the front row, 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.87 and to sing the closing hymn 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.23 and there was a young co-ed there. 00:10:05.27\00:10:06.97 And she leaned over to me and she whispered, 00:10:07.00\00:10:09.30 "Which book of the Bible is it?" 00:10:09.34\00:10:12.04 Well, that's the whole point of not announcing the book, 00:10:12.07\00:10:13.71 you want a little sense of mystery. 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.08 So I said, "You'll have to come back next Sabbath 00:10:15.11\00:10:17.31 and find out." 00:10:17.35\00:10:18.68 To which she replied, 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.05 "Well, since you said that 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.42 I've already been going through the Bible, 00:10:21.45\00:10:22.98 and I found two books that end with a question." 00:10:23.02\00:10:25.72 I said, "You're kidding me. Show me." 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.12 She was right. 00:10:28.16\00:10:29.49 You can't believe everything that preacher says, 00:10:32.36\00:10:34.06 I'm just telling you, you just can't believe it. 00:10:34.10\00:10:37.40 And so I said, "Well, I want to have 00:10:37.43\00:10:38.77 to apologize next week," 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.67 which is what I'm doing right now. 00:10:40.70\00:10:42.74 And I'm thankful for that 00:10:42.77\00:10:44.71 young Andrews University student 00:10:44.74\00:10:46.54 who spent the last half of my sermon 00:10:46.57\00:10:47.98 not listening to it, but trying to find out 00:10:48.01\00:10:49.44 if what I'd said was true. 00:10:49.48\00:10:51.68 She's right, there're two books in the Bible 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.28 that end with a question, 00:10:53.31\00:10:54.65 but a little bit of redemption here. 00:10:54.68\00:10:56.42 Let me get the two books, Nahum and Jonah. 00:10:56.45\00:10:59.75 Here's the redemption. 00:10:59.79\00:11:01.12 Both books deal with the same city Nineveh. 00:11:01.16\00:11:04.33 Keep your pen moving, write it down. 00:11:04.36\00:11:05.69 It's Jonah, however, 00:11:05.73\00:11:07.20 Jonah not only ends with a question, 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.96 it is packed with 13 of them 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.43 in rapid fire sequence, boom, boom, boom, 00:11:11.47\00:11:13.37 I'm gonna give you all 13 right now. 00:11:13.40\00:11:14.74 Hold on to your seat. Where do you come from? 00:13:42.35\00:13:44.29 What is your country? From what people are you? 00:13:44.32\00:13:46.12 Just like a prosecuting attorney, 00:13:46.15\00:13:47.49 boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. 00:13:47.52\00:13:50.36 You must be bad to get the God this man. 00:13:50.39\00:13:54.43 And Jonah calmly is in that boat, 00:13:54.46\00:13:56.23 pitches in ease. 00:13:56.26\00:13:57.60 Jonah calmly says, "I'm a Hebrew. 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.04 I worship the Most High God 00:14:00.07\00:14:01.40 who made all of this in the first place." 00:14:01.44\00:14:04.77 And now here comes question number seven. 00:14:04.81\00:14:08.84 What verse is it? That be verse 10. 00:14:08.88\00:14:11.65 "This terrified them when they heard about him 00:14:11.68\00:14:13.48 worshiping the Creator God. 00:14:13.52\00:14:14.85 And they asked, here comes question number 7, 00:14:14.88\00:14:18.22 "What have you done?" 00:14:18.25\00:14:19.95 They knew he was running away from the Lord, 00:14:19.99\00:14:21.52 because he had already told them so. 00:14:21.56\00:14:23.59 Now here comes question number 8, verse 11, 00:14:23.63\00:14:25.89 "And the sea was getting rougher and rougher. 00:14:25.93\00:14:27.30 So they asked him, 'What should we do 00:14:27.33\00:14:28.90 to make the sea calm down for us?' 00:14:28.93\00:14:30.90 " You know, when you're running, 00:14:34.14\00:14:36.04 like Jonah, from our guilty conscience, 00:14:36.07\00:14:40.41 you're going to come to that moment, 00:14:40.44\00:14:41.78 or else it'll drive you to either drink or despair. 00:14:41.81\00:14:44.11 You're going to come to that moment 00:14:44.15\00:14:45.48 when you're going to have to have a Mea culpa. 00:14:45.51\00:14:48.22 That's Latin for my fault. 00:14:48.25\00:14:50.15 That boat, that little piece of Phoenician driftwood 00:14:50.19\00:14:55.12 shoots to the heavens 00:14:55.16\00:14:56.49 and as it drops into that canyon of water, 00:14:56.52\00:15:00.66 Jonah offers a Mea culpa. 00:15:00.70\00:15:04.60 Would be verse 12, 00:15:04.63\00:15:06.13 "Pick me up and throw me into the sea," 00:15:06.17\00:15:08.30 he replied, "and it will become calm. 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.47 I know, here it comes, I know that it is my fault," 00:15:10.51\00:15:14.18 Latin Mea culpa. 00:15:14.21\00:15:15.54 "I know that it is my fault that this great storm 00:15:15.58\00:15:18.41 has come upon you. 00:15:18.45\00:15:20.35 It is my fault." 00:15:20.38\00:15:24.09 How many of our relationships? 00:15:40.64\00:15:43.37 I'm sorry. 00:15:43.41\00:15:44.74 It is my fault. 00:15:44.77\00:15:47.48 Men are gonna throw him, verse 13, 00:15:52.55\00:15:54.15 "Instead the men did their best to row back to land. 00:15:54.18\00:15:56.12 But they could not, for the sea grew 00:15:56.15\00:15:57.55 even wilder than before." 00:15:57.59\00:15:59.75 The sails are tattered now. 00:15:59.79\00:16:01.36 Then verse 14, "They cried to the Lord, oh, Lord," 00:16:01.39\00:16:03.86 they just met this God, they just, thanks to Jonah. 00:16:03.89\00:16:06.16 "Oh, Lord, please do not let us die 00:16:06.19\00:16:08.10 for taking this man's life. 00:16:08.13\00:16:09.46 Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man 00:16:09.50\00:16:11.60 for you, O Lord have done as you pleased." 00:16:11.63\00:16:14.10 Then we're going to have to do it. 00:16:14.14\00:16:15.47 Verse 15, "They took Jonah and they throw him overboard 00:16:15.50\00:16:17.54 and the raging, boom, that raging sea grew calm, 00:16:17.57\00:16:21.01 miraculous." 00:16:21.04\00:16:22.61 And look what happens at this, verse 16, 00:16:22.64\00:16:25.01 "The men greatly feared the Lord, 00:16:25.05\00:16:27.12 and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord 00:16:27.15\00:16:28.82 and they made vows to him. 00:16:28.85\00:16:30.19 I accept you now as the God in the universe. 00:16:30.22\00:16:33.46 Just got saved, old boat full of pagan sailors. 00:16:33.49\00:16:36.52 And what's happened to the Jonah? None of your business? 00:28:52.19\00:28:54.16 That is precisely Jonah's attitude. 00:28:54.20\00:28:56.16 And that's why about got lost. 00:28:56.20\00:28:57.97 It is your business. 00:28:58.00\00:28:59.57 Jonah says, "Who cares? 00:28:59.60\00:29:01.34 Who cares? 00:29:01.37\00:29:03.24 Do you care? 00:29:03.27\00:29:04.84 Do I care?" 00:29:04.87\00:29:06.21 A 100 years ago, 00:29:13.45\00:29:16.82 there was a woman who also had a heart 00:29:16.85\00:29:18.25 that broke for the cities. 00:29:18.29\00:29:19.62 I had these words, 00:29:19.65\00:29:20.99 and more scribbled all over my pages of Jonah. 00:29:21.02\00:29:23.69 I wanted you to have 00:29:23.73\00:29:25.06 and so you're having the study guide. 00:29:25.09\00:29:26.43 Take a look at what she wrote, "Work the cities without delay, 00:29:26.46\00:29:29.90 for time is short." 00:29:29.93\00:29:31.77 That was a century ago. 00:29:31.80\00:29:33.84 "At such a time as this, 00:29:33.87\00:29:35.20 every hand is to be employed in the city." 00:29:35.24\00:29:37.74 Now, the emphasis here is mine. 00:29:37.77\00:29:39.57 "The burden of the needs of our cities 00:29:39.61\00:29:41.58 has rested so heavily upon me 00:29:41.61\00:29:43.78 that it is sometimes seem that I should die." 00:29:43.81\00:29:46.92 Have you ever felt, 00:29:46.95\00:29:48.28 I am gonna die because of that city, 00:29:48.32\00:29:49.92 it's not reached for Christ. 00:29:49.95\00:29:51.45 I never felt that way in my life. 00:29:51.49\00:29:54.46 A burden of those cities is so heavy on me. 00:29:54.49\00:29:57.79 I've sometimes thought I was gonna die. 00:29:57.83\00:30:01.10 Wow. 00:30:01.13\00:30:02.46 Here's another one, 00:30:02.50\00:30:03.83 " Wake up, wake up 00:30:03.87\00:30:05.20 and enter the fields in America that have never been worked. 00:30:05.23\00:30:09.00 There's a work to be done in foreign fields. 00:30:09.04\00:30:10.37 And I want to say this, 00:30:10.41\00:30:11.74 I realize we have over 90 nations 00:30:11.77\00:30:13.68 represented in Pioneer and at Andrews University. 00:30:13.71\00:30:16.58 And God knows you have challenges there. 00:30:16.61\00:30:18.25 But I tell you what? 00:30:18.28\00:30:19.61 We need to see this sentence as well in America. 00:30:19.65\00:30:21.65 There is a work to be done in foreign fields, 00:30:21.68\00:30:23.25 but there is a work to be done in America 00:30:23.28\00:30:25.49 that is just as important. 00:30:25.52\00:30:27.86 The Missology department 00:30:27.89\00:30:29.69 wants to cast our eyes over the seas. 00:30:29.72\00:30:31.56 We do need that vision over there. 00:30:31.59\00:30:33.53 But we cannot forget the cities here at home. 00:30:33.56\00:30:36.77 Just as important. 00:30:36.80\00:30:38.50 Now go on, there's more to that, isn't there? 00:30:38.53\00:30:39.87 Yeah. 00:30:39.90\00:30:41.24 "In the cities of America, 00:30:41.27\00:30:42.60 there are people of almost every language." 00:30:42.64\00:30:44.44 Do you know how many languages are in Chicago? 00:30:44.47\00:30:45.94 Do you know how many nations 00:30:45.97\00:30:47.31 are represented in the Windy City 00:30:47.34\00:30:48.68 just around the corner of the lake? 00:30:48.71\00:30:50.38 These need the light that God has given to His church? 00:30:50.41\00:30:54.48 Wow. 00:30:54.52\00:30:56.95 I have a book in my library, written by John, excuse me, 00:30:56.99\00:31:00.62 John Dawson. 00:31:00.66\00:31:02.79 Title of the book, Taking our Cities for God. 00:31:02.82\00:31:04.46 I've read it through three times. 00:31:04.49\00:31:05.83 And I know I'm going to read it a fourth time. 00:31:05.86\00:31:08.20 In that marvelous stirring book, 00:31:08.23\00:31:11.23 Dawson has written these words 00:31:11.27\00:31:12.77 and you have them there in the study guide. 00:31:12.80\00:31:14.67 "The emergence of a worldwide urban culture, 00:31:14.70\00:31:18.37 I like that, is setting the stage 00:31:18.41\00:31:20.84 for the world's first truly global awakening. 00:31:20.88\00:31:23.75 From China to Brazil, cities are becoming 00:31:23.78\00:31:26.28 more and more uniform in culture. 00:31:26.31\00:31:28.02 Entertainment in the form of movies, 00:31:28.05\00:31:29.58 rock music and television 00:31:29.62\00:31:30.95 is discipling the youth of the world 00:31:30.99\00:31:32.32 into a universal urban culture. 00:31:32.35\00:31:35.19 English as a second language 00:31:35.22\00:31:36.96 is spoken by the elite of most world-class cities, 00:31:36.99\00:31:39.49 thus creating the potential 00:31:39.53\00:31:40.86 for the rapid spread of a product or an idea." 00:31:40.90\00:31:44.77 You know, when I read that it suddenly hit me, 00:31:44.80\00:31:46.13 wait time out. 00:31:46.17\00:31:47.50 Do I, hold it, do you understand 00:31:47.54\00:31:50.37 that all because of these agglomeration cities, 00:31:50.41\00:31:53.27 God has actually set up 00:31:53.31\00:31:55.14 His everlasting gospel for success. 00:31:55.18\00:31:58.25 Success today. Why? 00:31:58.28\00:31:59.61 Because we have mass communications now, 00:31:59.65\00:32:01.58 we have the English language 00:32:01.62\00:32:03.35 that's spoken almost the whole world over. 00:32:03.39\00:32:05.55 And number three, we have this global urban culture, 00:32:05.59\00:32:09.19 you can go dress like this into any city on earth, 00:32:09.22\00:32:11.43 and you look like just one of the boys, 00:32:11.46\00:32:13.36 one of the girls, 00:32:13.40\00:32:14.73 you don't have to change your uniform now. 00:32:14.76\00:32:16.70 It's the same culture in the world cities. 00:32:16.73\00:32:19.90 God has set us up for success. 00:32:19.93\00:32:23.47 But Dawson says, these are urgent times, 00:32:23.51\00:32:27.34 and then let me read, these are his words again, 00:32:27.38\00:32:29.14 more than half, listen to this, 00:32:29.18\00:32:30.51 "More than half the people who have ever lived 00:32:30.55\00:32:33.42 are now alive. 00:32:33.45\00:32:34.85 If we don't have an awakening in this generation, 00:32:34.88\00:32:37.89 more people will go to an eternity without Christ 00:32:37.92\00:32:40.36 than in all the past generations 00:32:40.39\00:32:42.56 put together. 00:32:42.59\00:32:44.23 Wow. 00:32:44.26\00:32:45.59 I can't see God allowing that to happen." 00:32:45.63\00:32:47.00 He writes, "Business-as-usual is not good enough, 00:32:47.03\00:32:49.63 there is not enough time." 00:32:49.66\00:32:53.54 Which is why my dear people, 00:32:53.57\00:32:55.50 it is high time to make God's last question 00:32:55.54\00:32:58.91 our first question, 00:32:58.94\00:33:00.28 should I not be concerned about that great city? 00:33:00.31\00:33:05.68 And I was just saying, you say, "No, Pastor, come on, please. 00:33:05.71\00:33:08.48 There's no way, I can't move to Tokyo. 00:33:08.52\00:33:10.52 I can't move to Moscow. 00:33:10.55\00:33:12.95 I can't show up in Bombay. 00:33:12.99\00:33:16.42 I'm stuck here in Berrien Springs." 00:33:16.46\00:33:18.19 Well, so am I. 00:33:18.23\00:33:19.96 But there are two things we can do, 00:33:20.00\00:33:21.46 jot these down in closing, two strategies for us 00:33:21.50\00:33:23.80 who live right here right now. 00:33:23.83\00:33:25.17 Strategy number one 00:33:25.20\00:33:26.53 begin with a city closest to you. 00:33:26.57\00:33:29.24 Twelve miles up this road, 00:33:29.27\00:33:32.44 we have according to The Wall Street Journal, 00:33:32.47\00:33:35.48 the second most depressed 00:33:35.51\00:33:36.88 inner city per capita in the United States. 00:33:36.91\00:33:39.88 Twelve miles away, it's called Benton Harbor. 00:33:39.91\00:33:44.22 If God's heart breaks for that city, 00:33:44.25\00:33:46.35 shouldn't our hearts break too? 00:33:46.39\00:33:48.22 If God's messenger could explain 00:33:48.26\00:33:49.96 that the burden of the needs of the city are so great, 00:33:49.99\00:33:52.43 it is sometimes seen that I should die, 00:33:52.46\00:33:54.10 can't we let the same Spirit of Jesus 00:33:54.13\00:33:59.13 bring that passion to us as well. 00:33:59.17\00:34:04.44 It's time to fill in that last blank, 00:34:04.47\00:34:06.11 the one that we left blank at the beginning. 00:34:06.14\00:34:08.48 Fill it in. 00:34:08.51\00:34:11.61 It's true, five letter word here it comes, 00:34:11.65\00:34:14.48 it's true, the GI generation conquered inner space 00:34:14.52\00:34:17.85 and the baby boomers conquered outer space, 00:34:17.89\00:34:20.79 Generation X has conquered cyberspace 00:34:20.82\00:34:23.36 but what about the millennial generation?
