00:07:57.67\00:07:59.92 So we ask the question, 00:07:59.95\00:08:01.38 well, colors communicate things, don't they? 00:08:01.41\00:08:06.02 White, the color of white, what does that communicate? 00:08:06.05\00:08:09.90 Peace, purity many things like that. 00:08:09.93\00:08:13.65 In every culture colors communicate 00:08:13.68\00:08:17.13 and so we started asking what color is mercy? 00:08:17.16\00:08:20.73 And so I post this question 00:08:22.18\00:08:24.25 to several of my artist friends here 00:08:24.28\00:08:28.18 and ask them come up with a color 00:08:28.21\00:08:31.59 that to you communicate something of God's mercy. 00:08:31.62\00:08:36.30 First of all, Jenny Shepherd, 00:08:36.33\00:08:37.76 one of our students in art and design. 00:08:37.79\00:08:42.23 Jenny, you've chosen a green, a very vibrant green. 00:08:42.26\00:08:46.15 Tell us what this color communicates? 00:08:46.18\00:08:49.64 Well, I choose the color light green, 00:08:49.67\00:08:53.49 specifically because it reminds me of new growth. 00:08:53.52\00:08:56.32 It's the color of new growth like the grass and spring. 00:08:56.35\00:09:00.00 And how this relates to God's mercy for me is that 00:09:00.03\00:09:03.76 in our Christian lives 00:09:03.79\00:09:05.39 we are continually growing towards God 00:09:05.42\00:09:09.56 and in His infinite mercy He allow-- 00:09:09.59\00:09:13.16 He forgives us our sins and we keep growing. 00:09:13.19\00:09:16.27 So it's just a continual green growth in mercy. 00:09:16.30\00:09:21.14 Amen. 00:09:21.17\00:09:22.24 Says God's mercies are new every morning 00:09:22.27\00:09:25.38 always ready for that new growth. 00:09:25.41\00:09:27.68 Yes. Amen, thank you. 00:09:27.71\00:09:30.39 Greg Howell, one of our students at the seminary here 00:09:30.42\00:09:33.70 also a talented artist has chosen this 00:09:33.73\00:09:36.74 very also very vibrant orange. 00:09:36.77\00:09:40.74 Greg, tell us why orange? 00:09:40.77\00:09:42.83 What does orange communicate? 00:09:42.86\00:09:45.22 Orange to me actually is kind of my favorite color 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.80 in several different things, sunsets, fall leaves 00:09:47.83\00:09:51.21 in my favorite pictures these days have been 00:09:51.24\00:09:55.07 deep space things from like the Hubble telescope and stuff. 00:09:55.10\00:09:58.17 And when, they show the sun it's never that yellow color 00:09:58.20\00:10:00.47 like we typically associate 00:10:00.50\00:10:01.77 but its that deep orangish reds and stuff like that. 00:10:01.80\00:10:05.47 So I was thinking about the sun and the power 00:10:05.50\00:10:08.55 the closure you get to the sun the more it affects you, 00:10:08.58\00:10:10.85 I mean the hotter you get 00:10:10.88\00:10:12.08 the more intense UV rays you get and everything. 00:10:12.11\00:10:14.72 And to me that's kind of what mercy does, 00:10:14.75\00:10:16.28 because the closure I get to mercy 00:10:16.31\00:10:18.88 and to seeing what God is really like 00:10:18.91\00:10:21.08 the more it has to affect me and change me. 00:10:21.11\00:10:22.96 It's hard to-- well, I would say impossible to contact, 00:10:24.95\00:10:28.79 come in contact with God's mercy and remain unchanged 00:10:28.82\00:10:32.86 much like falling into the sun. 00:10:32.89\00:10:35.48 It's hard to remain unchanged, 00:10:35.51\00:10:37.08 although God's mercy doesn't vaporize us in the way 00:10:37.11\00:10:40.79 that the sun would hopefully. 00:10:40.82\00:10:42.70 Okay, all right, thank you, Greg. 00:10:42.73\00:10:46.29 Heidi Murphy is not a stranger to many, 00:10:46.32\00:10:48.81 many of you here. 00:10:48.84\00:10:50.80 Lovely wife of Pat Murphy, 00:10:50.83\00:10:52.87 who you can hear saying amen, every week. 00:10:52.90\00:10:56.08 Heidi, you have chosen a blue, blue, tell us why blue? 00:10:56.11\00:11:01.18 Well, blue for two reasons. 00:11:01.21\00:11:03.19 The first one is I use to procrastinate a lot 00:11:03.22\00:11:06.71 when I was in school I was an art major 00:11:06.74\00:11:08.78 and-- I used to wait to do my projects 00:11:08.81\00:11:11.81 till the end of the semester 00:11:11.84\00:11:12.94 and I would stay up all night and work. 00:11:12.97\00:11:14.69 So, the morning light of the blue sky, 00:11:14.72\00:11:19.32 meant I need mercy, because my projects are not done yet. 00:11:19.35\00:11:23.17 So God would show me mercy through the sky say 00:11:24.34\00:11:27.63 you have only got a couple of more hours 00:11:27.66\00:11:29.34 till you got to get your project done. 00:11:29.37\00:11:31.34 And every time my professors would show me mercy. 00:11:31.37\00:11:34.72 Amen. 00:11:34.75\00:11:35.78 And it was through them that I shown mercy. 00:11:35.81\00:11:37.99 Number two, and I don't know if you could see the-- 00:11:38.02\00:11:41.45 the transition from the dark corners to the blue 00:11:41.48\00:11:43.97 it's almost royal and it's almost mercy 00:11:44.00\00:11:46.78 shows transition in your heart. 00:11:46.81\00:11:49.10 You change and you evolve from darkness to a royalness 00:11:49.13\00:11:53.17 in experiencing who Jesus is. 00:11:53.20\00:11:55.40 Amen. 00:11:55.43\00:11:56.67 Are we taking notes, professors? 00:11:56.70\00:11:58.39 Arnol Jimenez, 00:12:02.49\00:12:05.27 he's not a stranger also to our community. 00:12:05.30\00:12:07.67 He is been a part of it for a number of years here 00:12:07.70\00:12:10.71 and he has chosen kind of a flesh tone 00:12:10.74\00:12:15.53 a flesh tone. 00:12:15.56\00:12:16.59 Arnol, tell us about this? 00:12:16.62\00:12:18.78 Well, there is also two reasons. 00:12:20.85\00:12:23.55 The first one is because 00:12:23.58\00:12:26.90 obviously flesh tone represents humanity. 00:12:26.93\00:12:32.97 And we are the ones who needs the most of mercy. 00:12:33.00\00:12:37.23 And also because the almighty merciful 00:12:37.26\00:12:43.21 became flesh, so it's in honor to Him. 00:12:43.24\00:12:46.07 Amen. Amen. 00:12:47.36\00:12:49.10 And its fitting that we should end on this color. 00:12:49.13\00:12:52.28 John 1 says, the word became flesh 00:12:52.31\00:12:57.49 and pitched his tent among us, 00:12:57.52\00:13:00.24 he built his house next to us. 00:13:00.27\00:13:02.07 Hebrews 2 says, 00:13:03.70\00:13:05.46 "That He had to be made like His brothers in every way, 00:13:05.49\00:13:09.62 so that He might become a merciful and faithful 00:13:09.65\00:13:14.15 high priest in service to God, and that He might make 00:13:14.18\00:13:17.25 atonement for the sins of our people." 00:13:17.28\00:13:20.68 Flesh, flesh is the color of God's mercy to us 00:13:20.71\00:13:25.84 because God's mercy became flesh. 00:13:25.87\00:13:29.90 Blue, blue because the day is coming 00:13:29.93\00:13:34.04 and we have to turn things in 00:13:34.07\00:13:36.57 but there is mercy for us, thankfully, thankfully. 00:13:36.60\00:13:41.26 And God changes us from something that's dark 00:13:41.29\00:13:43.89 to something that's royal. 00:13:43.92\00:13:47.69 Orange, orange the power of the sun, 00:13:47.72\00:13:51.70 the power to change, the power to lighten. 00:13:51.73\00:13:55.16 And Green, growth. 00:13:55.19\00:13:58.84 It's our prayer today all of us I'm sure that, 00:13:58.87\00:14:02.83 that all of you every one of us will be able to experience 00:14:02.86\00:14:06.85 a new color of God's mercy. 00:14:06.88\00:14:09.39 In a moment we look full into His eyes 00:14:13.60\00:14:17.91 and we ask that question again 00:14:17.94\00:14:19.06 what is oh, God, the color of your mercy? 00:14:19.09\00:14:24.73 Holy Father, whatever color it is 00:14:24.76\00:14:26.73 and perhaps it's every color in the universe 00:14:26.76\00:14:32.10 we've got to get the color straight 00:14:32.13\00:14:36.26 and may be the color is different 00:14:36.29\00:14:39.72 for every single one of us, 00:14:39.75\00:14:42.48 divinely shaped and crafted to perfectly match 00:14:42.51\00:14:48.30 our own deep and personal need. 00:14:48.33\00:14:53.35 Whatever the color is may we see the colors 00:14:53.38\00:14:56.04 and may the picture of the colors compel us 00:14:56.07\00:15:00.23 to be that color to the world around us. 00:15:00.26\00:15:03.06 We pray in Christ name, amen. 00:15:03.09\00:15:06.22 The neighborhood hadn't seen, 00:15:10.00\00:15:12.20 it had not seen so many stretched 00:15:12.23\00:15:14.62 limo's in its life time. 00:15:14.65\00:15:17.37 I mean, you have seen stretched limo's 00:15:17.40\00:15:18.72 you know they come in all colors and shapes and sizes. 00:15:18.75\00:15:24.78 When our boy Kirk was growing up 00:15:24.81\00:15:28.09 one of his favorite backseat pastimes 00:15:28.12\00:15:30.38 as we were heading over to Chicago is to count 00:15:30.41\00:15:32.10 how many limo's he could see 00:15:32.13\00:15:33.27 on the way to the airport in O'Hare. 00:15:33.30\00:15:35.99 The gray, the black, and the silver 00:15:36.02\00:15:39.91 because you and I know that when you spot it 00:15:39.94\00:15:42.02 when you spot a limo your eyes immediately light up 00:15:42.05\00:15:45.04 because limos tend to indicate 00:15:45.07\00:15:47.21 somebody very important is passing by. 00:15:47.24\00:15:52.29 Limos are driven for people who are important 00:15:52.32\00:15:55.18 or for people who are trying hard 00:15:55.21\00:15:57.73 to pretend that they are important. 00:15:57.76\00:16:01.09 Like the academy awards, either way the limousines 00:16:01.12\00:16:04.49 always catch your eyes. 00:16:04.52\00:16:07.31 And so the neighborhood that is absolutely a buzz tonight 00:16:07.34\00:16:11.25 because as far as the eye can see 00:16:11.28\00:16:12.82 they are those stretched limos everywhere. 00:16:12.85\00:16:16.13 Big party, places jammed, oh, the very interesting tonight 00:16:16.16\00:16:21.06 the paparazzi you know, those you ubiquitous gawking 00:16:21.09\00:16:24.15 cameramen that always show up where its happening, 00:16:24.18\00:16:27.75 no paparazzi tonight because the word is out 00:16:27.78\00:16:30.89 nobody important is coming. 00:16:30.92\00:16:32.51 But the guest drive up invited 00:16:34.53\00:16:38.79 in their rented status symbols 00:16:38.82\00:16:40.71 the man with greasy slick black hair 00:16:40.74\00:16:44.88 or pasty goody girl clinging on to that right elbow, 00:16:44.91\00:16:49.87 one by one by one they come 00:16:49.90\00:16:52.07 but there is no site of the guest. 00:16:52.10\00:16:54.27 Where is the guest of honor? 00:16:54.30\00:16:56.44 Party has already started and eventually he arrives 00:16:56.47\00:17:00.53 chugging up the street and that beat up old Ford Taurus. 00:17:00.56\00:17:05.97 Drives into the drive way, the guest steps out, 00:17:06.00\00:17:11.49 no talks, no girl, 00:17:11.52\00:17:15.98 just a Kmart Blue Light special of a suit 00:17:16.01\00:17:19.52 but when the whole spots man comes 00:17:19.55\00:17:22.03 bounding down those stairs with his arms out stretched 00:17:22.06\00:17:25.52 you could have sworn 00:17:25.55\00:17:27.33 this is the president of the United States himself. 00:17:27.36\00:17:30.54 Only the little camera's one of those yellow Kodak 00:17:30.57\00:17:33.12 throw away special 00:17:33.15\00:17:34.40 flashing, flashing, flashing, flashing 00:17:34.43\00:17:36.30 let the party begin the guest is here. 00:17:36.33\00:17:40.57 I want to go, I want to go to that flesh colored mercy 00:17:40.60\00:17:44.16 with you this morning. 00:17:44.19\00:17:45.22 Open your Bible with me please because three of the gospel, 00:17:45.25\00:17:47.97 three of the gospel writers 00:17:48.00\00:17:49.32 just paint in their own unique hues 00:17:49.35\00:17:51.86 that unforgettable late night party. 00:17:51.89\00:17:54.21 Let's go to that party. 00:17:54.24\00:17:56.34 Now, we know that we have a friend in this series 00:17:56.37\00:17:58.24 and our friend is Matthew. 00:17:58.27\00:17:59.30 And so we are gonna go to Matthew for the party. 00:17:59.33\00:18:01.36 Although I've got to tell you this is Matthew Chapter 9. 00:18:01.39\00:18:03.45 Matthew is so humble 00:18:03.48\00:18:05.05 he will not even tell us in his account 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.33 that he is the one throwing the party 00:18:07.36\00:18:09.54 and that is taken place in his ornate mansion. 00:18:09.57\00:18:12.68 Not a word about it. 00:18:12.71\00:18:13.74 Now, let's go to Matthew Chapter 9, 00:18:13.77\00:18:15.65 you got a Bible in the quire off, 00:18:15.68\00:18:17.20 you got a Bible in the pew. 00:18:17.23\00:18:18.97 If you didn't bring the Bible, 00:18:19.00\00:18:20.03 just grab the pew Bible in front of you please, 00:18:20.06\00:18:21.67 because it will be the New King James Version 00:18:21.70\00:18:24.08 which is what I will be in this morning with you. 00:18:24.11\00:18:27.25 Page number in our pew Bible page 634, 00:18:27.28\00:18:30.77 let the party begin here it goes, 00:18:30.80\00:18:33.58 Matthew 9:9 "As Jesus passed on from there, 00:18:33.61\00:18:40.86 He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. 00:18:40.89\00:18:44.72 And He said to him, 'Follow Me.' 00:18:44.75\00:18:49.84 And so Matthew arose and followed Him." 00:18:49.87\00:18:52.94 Hey hit the pause button right there 00:18:52.97\00:18:54.00 because I got to tell you this is a very gutsy call 00:18:54.03\00:18:56.84 on the part of Christ because I remind you in case you forgot 00:18:56.87\00:18:59.70 Matthew was a member of the hated tax collectors. 00:18:59.73\00:19:03.11 You know, the tax collectors, well, who don't you? 00:19:03.14\00:19:04.83 They were those wealthy Jews 00:19:04.86\00:19:06.48 who collaborated with the despise Romans 00:19:06.51\00:19:09.88 to raise the taxes of little land of Judea. 00:19:09.91\00:19:14.23 Because you see it's a good deal. 00:19:15.65\00:19:17.61 If the Romans come to you and they say 00:19:17.64\00:19:18.67 hey boy, we are gonna give you Berrien Springs 00:19:18.70\00:19:20.33 and we have assessed Berrien Springs 00:19:20.36\00:19:21.54 every year it's a good deal. 00:19:21.57\00:19:25.50 The bad, the bad part of the deal is that Romans say 00:19:25.53\00:19:28.29 if you don't get $200,000 from them 00:19:28.32\00:19:30.16 we will take it right out of your own hand. 00:19:30.19\00:19:31.61 So we -- we don't care where you get it 00:19:31.64\00:19:33.25 we need $200,000. 00:19:33.28\00:19:34.58 The good news is that 00:19:34.61\00:19:35.64 because you are under that kind of pressure 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.66 you can set exuberating levels of levy taxes. 00:19:37.69\00:19:41.96 And so you can understand the tax collectors 00:19:44.43\00:19:47.32 were not the most popular men in the village. 00:19:47.35\00:19:50.90 In fact, they were despised and hated as collaborators 00:19:50.93\00:19:54.83 who would cut some kind of fusty 00:19:54.86\00:19:56.39 and bargain with the devil himself. 00:19:56.42\00:19:58.33 Please, so you got to admit pretty gutsy of Jesus to say 00:19:58.36\00:20:02.61 hey, boy, you-- you follow Me, 00:20:02.64\00:20:06.50 I gonna make you 00:20:06.53\00:20:07.91 apart of the inner circle of My closest. 00:20:07.94\00:20:11.65 All right verse 9 and "As Jesus passed on from there, 00:20:13.94\00:20:17.19 He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. 00:20:17.22\00:20:19.44 And He said to him, 'Follow Me.' 00:20:19.47\00:20:21.64 So Matthew arose and followed Him." 00:20:21.67\00:20:23.03 Verse 10, And "Now it happened 00:20:23.06\00:20:24.48 as Jesus sat at the table in the house, 00:20:24.51\00:20:26.28 that behold, many" notice the word, many. 00:20:26.31\00:20:29.65 "Many tax collectors and sinners came 00:20:31.11\00:20:33.76 and sat down with Jesus and His disciples." 00:20:33.79\00:20:36.41 Matthew humbly omits any mention of 00:20:36.44\00:20:39.02 who is throwing this party 00:20:39.05\00:20:40.08 but Mark and Luke are absolutely insisting 00:20:40.11\00:20:42.14 that we know its Matthew himself 00:20:42.17\00:20:44.43 and because Matthew is a tax collector 00:20:44.46\00:20:46.42 he is a very wealthy man. 00:20:46.45\00:20:47.62 He will not be wealthy for long 00:20:47.65\00:20:49.42 but he is living in this opulent mansion. 00:20:49.45\00:20:52.18 Matthew is throwing the party and ladies and gentlemen, 00:20:52.21\00:20:55.18 because verse 9 and verse 10 are juxtaposed side to side. 00:20:55.21\00:20:59.18 We know two reasons -- two reasons, 00:20:59.21\00:21:01.64 its Matthew's kind of subtle way of telling us 00:21:01.67\00:21:04.05 there are two reasons why I threw this party. 00:21:04.08\00:21:05.41 Reason number one, he is overwhelmed 00:21:05.44\00:21:07.95 with a deep and almost tearful gratitude 00:21:07.98\00:21:11.18 to this Jesus of Nazareth who has saved Him 00:21:11.21\00:21:12.99 from that life of under the table extortion and greed. 00:21:13.02\00:21:16.90 I just-- I just have to say thank you. 00:21:16.93\00:21:19.24 And reason number two is, Matthew cannot wait 00:21:19.27\00:21:23.12 to have his buddies 00:21:23.15\00:21:25.37 with their concerts and their girlfriends 00:21:25.40\00:21:26.85 and their wives meet the very same Jesus, 00:21:26.88\00:21:29.11 who obviously is a friend of tax collectors. 00:21:29.14\00:21:31.36 When mercy comes a running to you, 00:21:31.39\00:21:33.94 you cannot keep that fact to yourself. 00:21:33.97\00:21:38.11 You got to tell, so he is having a party, 00:21:38.14\00:21:41.81 very big party. 00:21:41.84\00:21:42.87 By the way Luke's language is it's a huge party, 00:21:42.90\00:21:46.97 broke the bank to say thank you. 00:21:47.00\00:21:49.78 All right, now let's read-- let's read verse 10 again. 00:21:49.81\00:21:52.68 And so "Now it happened as Jesus sat at the table 00:21:52.71\00:21:55.21 in Matthew's house, that behold, many tax collectors 00:21:55.24\00:21:59.56 and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples." 00:21:59.59\00:22:02.74 Because notice, notice the coupling 00:22:02.77\00:22:04.23 of those two categories 00:22:04.26\00:22:05.29 when ever the Jews had this little word associate together 00:22:05.32\00:22:07.15 yeah, let's word association. 00:22:07.18\00:22:08.60 I'll say a word you respond 00:22:08.63\00:22:10.17 whenever they would say tax collector, 00:22:10.20\00:22:11.92 they knew their winning response was always sinner. 00:22:11.95\00:22:14.76 If you say Pharisee, saint. 00:22:16.20\00:22:19.53 If you say Roman, heathen or pig. 00:22:19.56\00:22:23.66 If you say Samaritan, half breed or dog. 00:22:23.69\00:22:27.42 Tax collector, sinner. 00:22:27.45\00:22:30.56 Always those two bound together. 00:22:30.59\00:22:33.51 So this is a party for the tax collectors 00:22:33.54\00:22:37.06 and sinners and other are social 00:22:37.09\00:22:38.56 and ecclesiastical outcast and for Jesus 00:22:38.59\00:22:41.36 and guess what Pharisees think they were invited. 00:22:41.39\00:22:43.16 Wrong guys, but they didn't know 00:22:43.19\00:22:45.01 they just went ahead and showed up any way. 00:22:45.04\00:22:46.80 Hence you know it. 00:22:46.83\00:22:48.49 Look at verse 11 "And when the Pharisees saw it" 00:22:48.52\00:22:51.90 Pharisees, when the Pharisees saw the party 00:22:51.93\00:22:55.44 "they said to His disciples, 'Why does your Teacher eat 00:22:55.47\00:22:57.85 with tax collectors and sinners?'" 00:22:57.88\00:23:00.87 Party poopers its like that old jingle, 00:23:00.90\00:23:03.89 every party has a pooper that's why we invited you 00:23:03.92\00:23:06.43 party pooper, party pooper. 00:23:06.46\00:23:09.25 So when the Pharisees showed up 00:23:11.60\00:23:13.59 they weren't invited drove up in their Honda Accords. 00:23:13.62\00:23:16.88 I love this Kodak moment, 00:23:22.46\00:23:23.98 this Kodak moment picture Jesus. 00:23:24.01\00:23:26.20 I just love this. 00:23:26.23\00:23:27.32 Look at these guys because the Pharisees 00:23:27.35\00:23:30.55 these hoity religious pallets who would have be caught dead 00:23:30.58\00:23:34.28 in the house of an unclean publican. 00:23:34.31\00:23:37.52 But they got to find a way 00:23:42.99\00:23:44.02 to get inside that party some how. 00:23:44.05\00:23:45.52 They can't go in so they find a giant open window 00:23:45.55\00:23:48.13 beside the balcony. 00:23:48.16\00:23:51.04 The orange festive light is spilling out on to the ground, 00:23:51.07\00:23:53.28 they are standing in that orange light. 00:23:53.31\00:23:55.42 The laughter of a party in full progress 00:23:55.45\00:23:57.83 was into the night air and the Pharisees 00:23:57.86\00:24:01.32 they get up to that window on their tiptoes they go psst. 00:24:01.35\00:24:05.61 Because Pharisees always hiss, 00:24:05.64\00:24:10.37 psst hey, they try to get the attention 00:24:10.40\00:24:13.44 as some of these young men 00:24:13.47\00:24:14.59 that call the guest of honor, master. 00:24:14.62\00:24:16.61 Psst, come, come, come, come. 00:24:16.64\00:24:18.35 I tell you what the bunch of whips 00:24:20.74\00:24:23.59 will take on Jesus but pick on His followers instead. 00:24:23.62\00:24:28.17 But here comes this Kodak moment 00:24:28.20\00:24:29.35 and I just love this because my mother was this way. 00:24:29.38\00:24:32.33 And you know what, your mother was this way. 00:24:32.36\00:24:34.75 I mean, did you notice this about your mom? 00:24:34.78\00:24:36.98 I mean you can be in a room packed 00:24:37.01\00:24:39.22 right may be was in your-- your own little house 00:24:39.25\00:24:41.34 and everybody has come over and mom is across the room 00:24:41.37\00:24:44.07 caught up in a conversation with her friends 00:24:44.10\00:24:45.79 in that corner of the room 00:24:45.82\00:24:46.85 and on the other side of the living room, 00:24:46.88\00:24:48.15 you and your little buddies are there. 00:24:48.18\00:24:49.67 And you know what you can make 00:24:49.70\00:24:50.87 one slipping mistake in a word 00:24:50.90\00:24:55.87 and that mother who is so concentrated on her friends 00:24:55.90\00:24:58.16 the whole time with that rare view antenna 00:24:58.19\00:25:01.33 is listening to everything you are saying. 00:25:01.36\00:25:05.05 Boom, she is in oh, boy, what did you say boy? 00:25:05.08\00:25:07.58 Jesus is just like a great mom. 00:25:09.78\00:25:11.34 This is the Kodak moment because He is over here, 00:25:11.37\00:25:13.74 and nobody has asked Jesus a thing. 00:25:13.77\00:25:15.54 He is in conversation with the other publicans 00:25:15.57\00:25:18.32 and tax collectors and prostitutes over there. 00:25:18.35\00:25:20.33 He is in conversation but His ear is monitoring, 00:25:20.36\00:25:23.28 His little voice over in that corner 00:25:23.31\00:25:25.43 and they are just a few years younger than He. 00:25:25.46\00:25:26.96 And when He hears that psst, 00:25:28.49\00:25:32.73 boom he was not invited but he cuts into that conversation. 00:25:32.76\00:25:38.07 You had a question gentlemen? 00:25:38.10\00:25:39.61 I love that-- I love that about Jesus, 00:25:43.15\00:25:45.46 He will never leave you alone by the way. 00:25:45.49\00:25:47.62 You will never have to dangle alone 00:25:47.65\00:25:50.12 if He is your master. 00:25:50.15\00:25:51.92 He has got an ear to wherever you be He is listening. 00:25:51.95\00:25:55.83 All right, I'll see them on the next page 00:25:58.45\00:26:03.13 probably just a moment. 00:26:03.16\00:26:04.19 All right, here we go. 00:26:04.22\00:26:06.25 Verse 11, yeah, it's a great story I love it. 00:26:06.28\00:26:09.00 Verse 11, "And when the Pharisees saw it, 00:26:09.03\00:26:11.27 " we read it again " they said to His disciples, 00:26:11.30\00:26:13.10 'Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?'" 00:26:13.13\00:26:15.46 And "When Jesus heard that," see that ears caught, 00:26:15.49\00:26:17.59 "when Jesus heard that, He cut into that conversation 00:26:17.62\00:26:20.60 and He said to them," and by the way 00:26:20.63\00:26:21.95 when Jesus speaks up He get's everybody's attention. 00:26:21.98\00:26:24.21 That party likes-- in that party just go shh, 00:26:24.24\00:26:27.34 what and Jesus from across the room 00:26:27.37\00:26:29.81 hey you guys outside the window. 00:26:29.84\00:26:31.05 You have a question talk to me? 00:26:31.08\00:26:35.21 Jesus speaks in verse 12, He says, hey, don't you know, 00:26:35.24\00:26:38.78 you guys obviously have been on hospital 00:26:38.81\00:26:40.27 "Those who are well have no need of a physician." 00:26:40.30\00:26:44.26 Well, people don't need a doctor. 00:26:44.29\00:26:46.00 Jesus said no, no, no "but those who are sick." 00:26:46.03\00:26:49.20 In fact, go and learn. 00:26:49.23\00:26:50.58 Since you guys weren't invited to this party anyway 00:26:50.61\00:26:52.41 why don't you go home and have a Bible study. 00:26:52.44\00:26:54.29 Go have a Bible study 00:26:54.32\00:26:55.35 I want you to pull out the scrolls 00:26:55.38\00:26:56.41 be sure you get the scroll to Hosea. 00:26:56.44\00:26:58.16 There is one little line in Hosea guys, 00:26:58.19\00:26:59.62 I wish you would please mediate on for a while 00:26:59.65\00:27:01.52 for the rest of this night. 00:27:01.55\00:27:02.80 "Go and learn what this means, 00:27:02.83\00:27:04.18 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice.' 00:27:04.21\00:27:06.77 For I did not come to call the righteous, 00:27:06.80\00:27:08.48 but sinners, to repentance." 00:27:08.51\00:27:10.56 I love the way Eugene Peterson renders this last line of Jesus 00:27:16.46\00:27:20.34 in the message He said, as Jesus saying, 00:27:20.37\00:27:22.45 "I'm here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders." 00:27:22.48\00:27:27.26 Insiders always want to be coddle, coddle, coddle, 00:27:27.29\00:27:29.17 coddle, coddle so it reminds me the prayer 00:27:29.20\00:27:31.29 Martin Luther once prayed. 00:27:31.32\00:27:32.70 Oh, when I saw this prayer I said, 00:27:32.73\00:27:34.14 thank you Luther, for teaching me that 00:27:34.17\00:27:35.66 because I would like to pray it too. 00:27:35.69\00:27:36.94 It goes like this, "May God of His mercy 00:27:36.97\00:27:40.24 preserve me from a church 00:27:40.27\00:27:41.53 in which there are none but saints." 00:27:41.56\00:27:44.67 Wow, awful church to be in 00:27:44.70\00:27:48.49 if there are only saints in it trust me. 00:27:48.52\00:27:50.98 Good thing you and I are here. 00:27:51.01\00:27:54.16 "May God of His mercy preserve me from a church 00:27:54.19\00:27:55.64 in which there are none but saints. 00:27:55.67\00:27:56.83 I desire to dwell with the humble, 00:27:56.86\00:27:58.44 the feeble, the sick, 00:27:58.47\00:27:59.57 who know and feel their sins, 00:27:59.60\00:28:00.82 and who groan and cry continually to God 00:28:00.85\00:28:02.78 from the bottom of their hearts 00:28:02.81\00:28:03.87 to obtain His consolation and support." 00:28:03.90\00:28:06.15 Jesus said I came to call sinners 00:28:06.18\00:28:09.20 what kind of sinners what do you suppose. 00:28:09.23\00:28:12.26 Ladies and gentlemen, as far as I can tell 00:28:12.29\00:28:13.65 there are no express limitations 00:28:13.68\00:28:15.22 in Jesus rejoinder, do you see any? 00:28:15.25\00:28:17.00 I think He probably means. 00:28:17.03\00:28:18.59 Now, I'm just guessing at this 00:28:18.62\00:28:20.01 I think He probably means all sinners. 00:28:20.04\00:28:22.61 You know the type don't you? 00:28:22.64\00:28:24.50 Heterosexual sinners and homosexual sinners, 00:28:24.53\00:28:29.81 you know the type, 00:28:43.06\00:28:47.85 Some of you think, some of you think 00:28:47.88\00:28:49.48 Jesus hung around with the republicans. 00:28:49.51\00:28:51.53 He did not, He hung around the with the publicans. 00:28:51.56\00:28:54.21 It's not the same thing. 00:28:56.10\00:28:57.13 Independent sinners probably, 00:29:00.33\00:29:03.70 white sinners, black sinners, brown sinners, 00:29:03.73\00:29:05.78 yellow sinners, red sinners. 00:29:05.81\00:29:07.41 All of them, rich, poor sinners, yup. 00:29:07.44\00:29:09.71 Male, female yup educated, illiterate, yup. 00:29:09.74\00:29:12.40 Christian strikes me some a bit of good news, 00:29:33.27\00:29:35.40 don't it strike you that way? 00:29:35.43\00:29:36.90 Please, say, hey, you guys by the window. 00:29:36.93\00:29:38.88 Matthew says you weren't invited, 00:29:42.23\00:29:44.82 so go home and have a Bible study will you? 00:29:44.85\00:29:47.01 And look it up, Hosea 6:6 figure out what God means 00:29:47.04\00:29:50.65 when He says, I desire mercy and not sacrifice. 00:29:50.68\00:29:53.35 Good night. 00:29:53.38\00:29:54.41 Did you know that, that solitary line from Hosea 00:29:58.86\00:30:01.41 is quoted only twice in the New Testament. 00:30:01.44\00:30:03.75 Both times my Matthew and both times 00:30:03.78\00:30:06.14 on the lips of Jesus himself 00:30:06.17\00:30:09.31 there must be some really punch pat 00:30:09.34\00:30:13.68 and that powerful line 00:30:13.71\00:30:15.66 the only other time in the New Testament 00:30:15.69\00:30:17.33 take a look, just turn one page over Matthew Chapter 12. 00:30:17.36\00:30:19.83 Take a look at this. 00:30:19.86\00:30:21.51 Matthew 12:1 only other time Hosea 6, 00:30:21.54\00:30:26.40 Matthew 12:1 let's go, and 00:30:26.43\00:30:28.37 "At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. 00:30:28.40\00:30:32.40 And His disciples were hungry, 00:30:33.81\00:30:34.95 and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 00:30:34.98\00:30:37.50 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, 00:30:37.53\00:30:40.38 'Look, Your disciples are doing 00:30:40.41\00:30:42.54 what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!' 00:30:42.57\00:30:45.07 But Jesus said to them," Here come the red letters now, 00:30:45.10\00:30:47.35 "Jesus said, what's your guys problem, 00:30:47.38\00:30:49.79 'Haven't you read what David did when he was hungry, 00:30:49.82\00:30:52.06 and he and those who were with him, 00:30:52.09\00:30:53.36 how he entered the house of God, verse 4, 00:30:53.39\00:30:55.38 how he ate the showbread 00:30:55.41\00:30:56.60 which was not lawful for him to eat, 00:30:56.63\00:30:58.27 nor was it for those who were with him, 00:30:58.30\00:30:59.83 but only for the priests?" 00:30:59.86\00:31:00.99 Or how about this guys, verse 5, 00:31:01.02\00:31:02.76 "Haven't you read in the law that on the Sabbath 00:31:02.79\00:31:04.99 the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, 00:31:05.02\00:31:06.92 and are blameless? 00:31:06.95\00:31:07.98 Yet I say to you if you guys could get this 00:31:08.01\00:31:10.13 that there is one greater than the temple." 00:31:10.16\00:31:11.94 Who is standing here. 00:31:11.97\00:31:13.03 But verse 7, "I wish you have another Bible study 00:31:13.06\00:31:15.58 verse 7, "But if you had known what this means, 00:31:15.61\00:31:20.43 'I desire mercy, there it is 00:31:20.46\00:31:22.56 I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' 00:31:22.59\00:31:25.08 you would not have condemned the guiltless.'" 00:31:25.11\00:31:27.73 And by the way "The Son of Man is Lord 00:31:27.76\00:31:30.81 even of the Sabbath." 00:31:30.84\00:31:32.16 Only two places in the New Testament, 00:31:36.84\00:31:38.80 we just read them. 00:31:38.83\00:31:40.43 And by the way this story is not over yet 00:31:40.46\00:31:41.53 because Jesus said, these are the guys that slow me up, 00:31:41.56\00:31:43.32 I'm planning to go to church today, 00:31:43.35\00:31:44.84 where is the synagogue 00:31:44.87\00:31:45.90 because I'm having worship today with you. 00:31:45.93\00:31:48.17 And so the very next verse, verse 9, 00:31:48.20\00:31:49.52 "Now when He had departed from there, 00:31:49.55\00:31:50.74 He went into their synagogue. 00:31:50.77\00:31:52.49 And behold, there was a man" verse 10, 00:31:52.52\00:31:54.28 "who had a withered hand. 00:31:54.31\00:31:55.86 And they asked Him, saying," hey teacher, 00:31:55.89\00:31:59.49 "'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?' 00:31:59.52\00:32:01.93 That they might accuse Him." 00:32:01.96\00:32:03.31 They didn't want to know, they didn't want an answer. 00:32:03.34\00:32:05.27 They want to nail Him. 00:32:05.30\00:32:07.30 And Jesus said to them again. 00:32:07.33\00:32:08.78 These guys shh, are every where. 00:32:08.81\00:32:11.55 "Then He said to them, 'What man is there'" 00:32:11.58\00:32:13.77 common guys tell me, you got a sheep, 00:32:13.80\00:32:16.31 sheep wanders how do you look like on the Sabbath 00:32:16.34\00:32:18.32 tumbles into a pit you are on your way to church 00:32:18.35\00:32:20.77 and you look down that pit and that is your praise sheep. 00:32:20.80\00:32:23.59 What are you gonna do on the Sabbath? 00:32:23.62\00:32:25.07 Don't tell me that you are going to ahead 00:32:25.10\00:32:26.33 and go worship and leave that sheep there. 00:32:26.36\00:32:27.59 Are you crazy? I know what you will do? 00:32:27.62\00:32:29.21 You will climb down to get all dirty in that pit 00:32:29.24\00:32:31.37 just to save the life of a little tiny fluffy sheep. 00:32:31.40\00:32:35.60 Now Jesus says, verse 12 "Of how much more value 00:32:36.63\00:32:39.80 then is a human being than a sheep? 00:32:39.83\00:32:42.17 Therefore I'm telling you it is lawful to do good 00:32:42.20\00:32:45.56 on the Sabbath." 00:32:45.59\00:32:47.70 He turns some of those party poopers 00:32:47.73\00:32:50.76 and He says to the man, "Stretch out your hand." 00:32:50.79\00:32:55.14 And the man with the withered hand 00:32:55.17\00:32:58.20 realizes he is in the presence of divinity and in faith. 00:32:58.23\00:33:04.94 And hand just like, just like that, just like that. 00:33:04.97\00:33:08.27 And then verse 14, oh, boy, "The Pharisees went out 00:33:10.70\00:33:14.05 and plotted against Jesus, how they might destroy Him." 00:33:14.08\00:33:17.33 And its clear form the gospel record from that point 00:33:17.36\00:33:19.26 it's all down hill He is headed to death. 00:33:19.29\00:33:22.60 By that single act of mercy 00:33:22.63\00:33:24.42 Jesus signed His own death warrant. 00:33:24.45\00:33:28.08 Mercy is that important to Him. 00:33:28.11\00:33:30.20 Signed His execution orders. 00:33:30.23\00:33:31.94 There they are ladies and gentlemen, 00:33:31.97\00:33:33.33 two stories one punch line, I desire mercy. 00:33:33.36\00:33:37.10 And what's the truth about that punch line? 00:33:37.13\00:33:40.08 This is the great truth about mercy 00:33:40.11\00:33:42.12 and you can track this truth 00:33:42.15\00:33:43.18 all the way through Jesus life and here it is. 00:33:43.21\00:33:45.80 The truth is that mercy elevates need above creed. 00:33:45.83\00:33:51.78 Need over creed, need over creed. 00:33:51.81\00:33:54.89 You know, what the problem with you and me is 00:33:54.92\00:33:56.03 we get it backwards and so that we won't get it backwards, 00:33:56.06\00:33:59.27 let's quickly write it in frontward's. 00:33:59.30\00:34:01.50 Take the study guide 00:34:01.53\00:34:02.56 that's in your worship bulletin we do that. 00:34:02.59\00:34:04.64 Just take your study guide out we got to write this in. 00:34:04.67\00:34:06.58 Thank you ushers, we probably have people here 00:34:06.61\00:34:08.31 who got in without study guides so ushers come all the way 00:34:08.34\00:34:12.12 up to the front make sure we cover up here. 00:34:12.15\00:34:13.98 Hold your hand up if you need a study guide 00:34:14.01\00:34:16.10 and while the ushers are coming by. 00:34:16.13\00:34:17.69 Let me say to those who are watching on TV 00:34:17.72\00:34:19.62 you can get the same study guide right now. 00:34:19.65\00:34:21.30 Let me put it on the screen for you, 00:34:21.33\00:34:23.03 there it is www.pmchurch.tv 00:34:23.06\00:34:26.71 that's our website. 00:34:26.74\00:34:28.61 You can get the study guide by going to this 00:34:28.64\00:34:30.28 particular teaching series 00:34:30.31\00:34:31.83 its called "Mercy Came A Running." 00:34:31.86\00:34:34.57 And the title of this teaching is 00:34:34.60\00:34:37.20 "How to Put a Smile on God's Face." 00:34:37.23\00:34:39.16 You want to put a smile on God's face. 00:34:39.19\00:34:40.90 It's mercy, mercy, mercy. 00:34:40.93\00:34:43.05 When you see that how to put a smile on God's face 00:34:43.08\00:34:45.20 it says study guide click right there 00:34:45.23\00:34:47.25 and you will have that study guide right on the screen 00:34:47.28\00:34:49.09 before you and you can fill it in 00:34:49.12\00:34:50.64 even as we go here on your computer there. 00:34:50.67\00:34:54.79 All right, everybody get one all in the balcony, 00:34:54.82\00:34:57.30 quire has theirs I know. 00:34:57.33\00:34:58.87 Let's go, number one, fill it up please. 00:34:58.90\00:35:01.45 Two stories about Jesus with a single truth about God, 00:35:01.48\00:35:04.13 "I desire mercy." 00:35:04.16\00:35:06.63 Fill that in please, I desire mercy. 00:35:06.66\00:35:09.08 That's Hosea 6:6. 00:36:19.76\00:36:21.71 Jot that in, let's put in there 00:36:21.74\00:36:23.35 fill in the blank version of that. 00:36:23.38\00:36:24.98 Please fill it in, "For judgment is without mercy 00:36:25.01\00:36:29.19 to the one who has shown no mercy. 00:36:29.22\00:36:31.73 But mercy triumphs over judgment." 00:36:31.76\00:36:36.69 And by the way the Greek word for judgment is krisis, 00:36:36.72\00:36:39.72 from where it comes the word crisis. 00:36:39.75\00:36:41.74 In the New Testament translated either way it can be translated 00:36:41.77\00:36:44.18 judgment or it can be translated justice. 00:36:44.21\00:36:47.29 So that justice technically true is the reading 00:36:47.32\00:36:50.03 mercy triumphs over justice. 00:36:50.06\00:36:55.06 Now I know some of you-- you already have a voice 00:36:55.09\00:36:56.88 protesting in the back of your mind 00:36:56.91\00:36:58.19 you are saying hold, hold. 00:36:58.22\00:36:59.30 No, no, no before you rise up and protest 00:36:59.33\00:37:02.01 I want to be quick to affirm 00:37:02.04\00:37:03.82 that we are not trying to create here 00:37:03.85\00:37:05.16 some sort of false dichotomy between mercy and justice. 00:37:05.19\00:37:08.97 We don't have to concoct a straw man. 00:37:09.00\00:37:10.47 We don't have to come up with a paper tiger. 00:37:10.50\00:37:12.43 I understand mercy and justice are not antithetical, 00:37:12.46\00:37:16.19 they are not opposites, they are not even apposed. 00:37:16.22\00:37:18.26 In fact, do you know what they hold hands? 00:37:18.29\00:37:20.12 More over Psalms 85 declares that mercy and justice kiss, 00:37:21.43\00:37:24.95 they are not opposites. 00:37:24.98\00:37:27.23 However, and I believe every single one of us 00:37:27.26\00:37:29.44 could very this in the witness of our own spirits. 00:37:29.47\00:37:31.91 Every one of us knows this in our soul of souls 00:37:31.94\00:37:36.40 that there are times when mercy must over rule 00:37:36.43\00:37:42.41 a strict legalistic sense of justice and right. 00:37:42.44\00:37:48.93 When need must be elevated above creed, 00:37:48.96\00:37:51.61 when people are more important than propriety, 00:37:51.64\00:37:54.54 when mercy must triumph, over judgment. 00:37:54.57\00:37:57.89 Come on guys, don't you know this? 00:37:57.92\00:37:59.73 There are times when the letter of the law... 00:37:59.76\00:38:02.15 or the letter of the church manual 00:38:05.15\00:38:07.73 or the letter of the university handbook, 00:38:07.76\00:38:10.06 it says, thrown them out, but there are times 00:38:10.09\00:38:13.35 when mercy must stand up 00:38:13.38\00:38:16.31 it must stand up in that committee room. 00:38:16.34\00:38:18.59 It must stand up in that boardroom 00:38:18.62\00:38:20.47 it must stand up in that staff room, 00:38:20.50\00:38:21.85 in that class room, in that dorm room, 00:38:21.88\00:38:23.72 mercy must stand up and say you can't you just cannot, 00:38:23.75\00:38:28.24 we must over ride and over rule the letter of the law. 00:38:28.27\00:38:32.32 No, no, not so that somehow we become, we become lawless 00:38:33.96\00:38:38.03 but rather for the sake of making certain 00:38:38.06\00:38:40.04 that we are never loveless. 00:38:40.07\00:38:42.24 In fact, I wish, I wish you take a look at this. 00:38:43.98\00:38:46.72 This is-- this is controversial, 00:38:46.75\00:38:51.28 I found a line a hundred years ago, 00:38:51.31\00:38:52.75 a hundred years ago. 00:38:52.78\00:38:54.30 I believe this line is mercy's appeal 00:38:54.33\00:38:55.92 to the faith community. 00:38:55.95\00:38:57.35 It's in your study guide and you have to fill it in. 00:38:57.38\00:38:59.36 Move right down to where I am. 00:38:59.39\00:39:00.79 Read this, read these words "In reforms" isn't this amazing? 00:39:00.82\00:39:04.17 "In reforms we would better come one step short of the mark 00:39:04.20\00:39:09.17 than to go one step beyond it." 00:39:09.20\00:39:12.86 If any thing hold back, hold back, 00:39:12.89\00:39:16.59 now, here comes the one here is what knocks 00:39:16.62\00:39:18.94 your spiritual socks out of this, this next line, 00:39:18.97\00:39:21.15 "And if there is error at all, 00:39:21.18\00:39:25.06 let it be on the side next to the people." 00:39:25.09\00:39:29.63 Write that in. 00:39:29.66\00:39:31.28 If you are doing an error, if there is going to be error 00:39:31.31\00:39:34.92 always error on the side of the people. 00:39:34.95\00:39:39.43 I desire mercy that's why. 00:39:39.46\00:39:43.03 And so Jesus what did He do, 00:39:43.06\00:39:44.12 He sided with the need of the people, 00:39:44.15\00:39:46.57 rather than the creed of the Pharisees. 00:39:46.60\00:39:49.27 Sure come on, a case could be made 00:39:49.30\00:39:50.64 that associating with tax collectors 00:39:50.67\00:39:52.02 and socializing with prostitutes, 00:39:52.05\00:39:54.23 makes for a bad press for the kingdom of God. 00:39:54.26\00:39:56.28 Who doesn't understand that? 00:39:56.31\00:39:58.88 And so some could perhaps even conclude you know what, 00:39:58.91\00:40:01.46 that kind of association will only encourage 00:40:01.49\00:40:03.64 the immoral in their immoralities 00:40:03.67\00:40:06.12 but Jesus elevated need over creed. 00:40:06.15\00:40:10.03 He stood on the side of the people and He said nope, 00:40:10.06\00:40:12.98 look at it if I can win two or three more like Matthew, 00:40:13.01\00:40:16.00 its worth a risk need over creed. 00:40:16.03\00:40:22.18 And so Jesus took His places 00:40:22.21\00:40:23.30 we just read in this quotation on the side next to the people. 00:40:23.33\00:40:26.47 For you see mercy elevates need over creed. 00:40:26.50\00:40:29.90 Our temptation is to do what exactly opposite. 00:40:29.93\00:40:33.05 Here, fill this in, here is what we want to do. 00:40:33.08\00:40:35.23 We want to elevate creed over need, don't we? 00:40:35.26\00:40:39.58 I mean we get Jesus mercy backwards. 00:40:41.99\00:40:44.24 And so we win our arguments but we live we win our argument 00:40:44.27\00:40:48.10 but we lose our communities. 00:40:48.13\00:40:49.93 We prove the point and tell there is finally nobody 00:40:49.96\00:40:52.17 to whom to prove the point to anymore. 00:40:52.20\00:40:54.06 Creed won but it missed it, 00:40:54.09\00:40:56.56 it lost the need of the people. 00:40:56.59\00:40:59.04 That is so sad. 00:40:59.07\00:41:00.12 Pharisees always get it backwards, 00:41:00.15\00:41:02.97 Pharisees always exile creed over need. 00:41:03.00\00:41:06.75 I don't care if you are hungry, 00:41:06.78\00:41:09.50 I don't care if that man has a shrivel arm. 00:41:09.53\00:41:11.19 What are we suppose to do? 00:41:11.22\00:41:12.25 Do something about it on the Sabbath. 00:41:12.28\00:41:13.42 The creed says this is Sabbath nothing. 00:41:13.45\00:41:16.59 Pharisees always elevate creed over need. 00:41:16.62\00:41:21.56 Jesus says you got it backwards I desire mercy not sacrifice. 00:41:21.59\00:41:25.90 So I'll tell you what how did Martin Luther pray 00:41:27.62\00:41:30.28 "May God of His mercy preserve me from a church 00:41:30.31\00:41:33.40 in which there are none but saints." 00:41:33.43\00:41:35.75 Deliver me please from the perfect 00:41:35.78\00:41:40.27 and that's why both Luther and Jesus 00:41:40.30\00:41:42.91 chose to be on the side of the people. 00:41:42.94\00:41:48.48 Need over creed. 00:41:48.51\00:41:51.68 If there is an error at all, 00:41:51.71\00:41:52.88 let it be on the side next to the people. 00:41:52.91\00:41:56.09 Question since its clear that mercy 00:41:56.12\00:41:58.32 is the default setting for God 00:41:58.35\00:41:59.51 I desire mercy what should be the default setting 00:41:59.54\00:42:02.24 for the people of God? 00:42:02.27\00:42:03.65 Answer, mercy. 00:42:03.68\00:42:05.87 But of course I want to end with a testimony. 00:42:05.90\00:42:09.35 I've had a bit more time 00:42:14.49\00:42:17.54 to contemplate this issue of mercy 00:42:17.57\00:42:19.38 than you have because I started booting on this last fall. 00:42:19.41\00:42:22.75 So I'm a few weeks ahead of you. 00:42:22.78\00:42:25.46 I want to share with you a testimony of -- 00:42:25.49\00:42:27.42 of where I'm at with this -- with this brooding 00:42:27.45\00:42:31.26 because I have been wondering to God I said, God I mean, 00:42:31.29\00:42:33.78 this makes sense but how do we do it practically? 00:42:33.81\00:42:36.89 How do we live it out? 00:42:36.92\00:42:38.64 I found a little question that I'm experimenting with 00:42:38.67\00:42:42.60 then I wish you jot this question now 00:42:42.63\00:42:43.87 for what's its worth, I understand 00:42:43.90\00:42:45.16 you don't have to take it. 00:42:45.19\00:42:46.22 But would you jot it down please? 00:42:46.25\00:42:47.57 And here is the question I have been asking myself. 00:42:47.60\00:42:49.31 What would be the most merciful? 00:42:49.34\00:42:51.43 Write it in. 00:42:51.46\00:42:52.49 What would be the most merciful thing 00:42:52.52\00:42:54.37 to do in this instance? 00:42:54.40\00:42:56.94 I know about the-- you know, what would Jesus do question? 00:42:56.97\00:42:59.25 That's okay, there is also this question, 00:42:59.28\00:43:02.00 what does the Bible tell me to do? 00:43:02.03\00:43:03.45 That's instructive but I'm not getting much help 00:43:03.48\00:43:05.36 with those questions. 00:43:05.39\00:43:06.55 I'm being honest with you I'm finding that this question 00:43:06.58\00:43:09.54 what would mercy do, 00:43:09.57\00:43:12.93 what would be the merciful thing to do? 00:43:12.96\00:43:15.86 The most merciful response in this instance? 00:43:15.89\00:43:19.30 I mean, somebody calls me up, say Dwight, I need some help? 00:43:21.04\00:43:25.48 So how I'm gonna respond? 00:43:25.51\00:43:26.88 It's a--- I'm trying to say okay, 00:43:26.91\00:43:29.32 what would mercy do in this instance? 00:43:29.35\00:43:33.12 I want to give somebody a piece of my mind. 00:43:33.15\00:43:36.29 This is not done right. This is wrong. 00:43:36.32\00:43:40.37 I just want to give you a little piece of my mind 00:43:40.40\00:43:42.82 so that you can understand where I stand in this. 00:43:42.85\00:43:45.84 I want to give my wife a piece of my mind. 00:43:45.87\00:43:48.67 I have given so many pieces of my mind to Karen 00:43:48.70\00:43:50.81 I don't even have a mind left. 00:43:50.84\00:43:51.96 We have always given pieces of our mind 00:43:56.35\00:43:57.72 hat's why we are walking out empty brain. 00:43:57.75\00:44:00.72 Giving out piece of my mind here 00:44:00.75\00:44:02.32 but so I'm starting to-- I'm starting to learn 00:44:02.35\00:44:04.83 I'm not there yet but I'm starting to learn. 00:44:04.86\00:44:07.47 Come on Dwight, calm down, please. 00:44:07.50\00:44:11.38 What would be the merciful response in this situation? 00:44:11.41\00:44:14.42 Somebody calls me up, it's my day off, 00:44:18.20\00:44:21.30 I'm already worn out 00:44:21.33\00:44:22.90 could you come and help us please? 00:44:22.93\00:44:26.32 I have to put a little break, 00:44:26.35\00:44:27.38 hold it right there, hold it, hold it. 00:44:27.41\00:44:28.73 Okay, boy, what would be the most merciful way 00:44:28.76\00:44:31.59 to respond to this instance? 00:44:31.62\00:44:36.53 My roommate, oh, my roommate, 00:44:36.56\00:44:40.86 say what would be the most merciful way 00:44:40.89\00:44:43.00 to respond to this? 00:44:43.03\00:44:45.29 My employer, no my employee, 00:44:45.32\00:44:49.29 no my colleague, hey come on please. 00:44:49.32\00:44:54.04 No, what would be the most merciful way to respond? 00:44:54.07\00:44:58.72 It's Friday afternoon I got to get gas 00:44:58.75\00:45:01.27 and we both gone for the gas pump at the same time, 00:45:01.30\00:45:07.12 parking spot both of us. 00:45:07.15\00:45:11.13 What would be the most merciful way 00:45:11.16\00:45:13.00 to respond in this instance? 00:45:13.03\00:45:16.09 I'm beginning to figure out now, 00:45:16.12\00:45:17.60 please this is gonna sound okay to you, 00:45:17.63\00:45:20.48 I'm beginning to think that may be mercy even dictates 00:45:20.51\00:45:23.50 how I respond to our pet dog. 00:45:23.53\00:45:25.69 No, seriously, Karen and I the other day, true, 00:45:28.11\00:45:30.55 Karen and I the other day we are having worship 00:45:30.58\00:45:32.08 and we are reading this little book 00:45:32.11\00:45:33.14 called Sons and Daughters of God 00:45:33.17\00:45:34.46 and there was this line in it and I put in your study guide. 00:45:34.49\00:45:36.86 "He or she who loves God 00:45:36.89\00:45:38.38 will not only love his fellow men, 00:45:38.41\00:45:40.80 but will regard with tender compassion 00:45:40.83\00:45:42.73 the creatures which God has made." 00:45:42.76\00:45:45.90 So I'm hurrying out of the house because I have -- 00:45:45.93\00:45:47.80 I got a creed and that is you don't show up late 00:45:47.83\00:45:50.31 I got a creed but my little dog at the top of the stairs 00:45:50.34\00:45:54.02 has a major need. 00:45:54.05\00:45:55.60 So I have to look at Saydi, 00:45:58.72\00:46:01.32 well, you can hold the girl 00:46:01.35\00:46:02.62 I'll back in four hours just hold it. 00:46:02.65\00:46:06.46 And I asked myself, wait a minute, wait a minute 00:46:06.49\00:46:07.88 is that mercy, is that mercy to my dog? 00:46:07.91\00:46:10.80 No need, need right now, 00:46:10.83\00:46:14.57 gets elevated above creed 00:46:14.60\00:46:16.63 because if a creature is a creation of my loving God 00:46:16.66\00:46:19.87 who Has had mercy on me 00:46:19.90\00:46:21.37 then I need to have mercy on His creatures too. 00:46:21.40\00:46:24.53 So even the way you treat your pets 00:46:24.56\00:46:26.38 somehow I know it sounds a bit -- 00:46:26.41\00:46:28.19 a bit corny I'm not intending it for to 00:46:28.22\00:46:31.63 but all I'm telling you is honestly, 00:46:31.66\00:46:35.11 I'm finding that asking this question, 00:46:35.14\00:46:37.28 what would be the most merciful response 00:46:37.31\00:46:39.17 to make in this particular instance, is help in me. 00:46:39.20\00:46:42.18 As I said a moment ago, I don't know who is asking 00:46:42.21\00:46:44.48 I just, sometimes I don't have time for mercy. 00:46:44.51\00:46:49.18 You see, I understand that. 00:46:49.21\00:46:52.30 But you know what and this is true, 00:46:52.33\00:46:54.17 I only have two or three months ahead of you on this 00:46:54.20\00:46:56.37 but I use to stew, I still do it 00:46:56.40\00:47:01.04 but I use to really get up tight 00:47:01.07\00:47:03.13 because once I figured something was wrong 00:47:03.16\00:47:05.59 it was not-- its not good if we don't do things like this, 00:47:05.62\00:47:09.60 once I find that about-- find out about that then I stew 00:47:09.63\00:47:12.95 and I'm giving all kinds of speeches in my mind 00:47:12.98\00:47:15.17 to the person that needs the speech. 00:47:15.20\00:47:18.01 I give the speech so that speech has a negative 00:47:18.04\00:47:21.45 its just very poisons and so my stomach 00:47:21.48\00:47:23.85 scours these little gastric juices 00:47:23.88\00:47:26.52 and my stomach goes into a nut and a nut. 00:47:26.55\00:47:29.10 And I'm all uptight now, 00:47:29.13\00:47:31.32 I'm not afraid of confrontation trust me, 00:47:31.35\00:47:33.49 bring it on but until it takes place, 00:47:33.52\00:47:36.53 see it's just like this. 00:47:36.56\00:47:38.01 And I'm realizing guys, I'm sorry to be so 00:47:38.04\00:47:40.84 I can't do with you but I'm realizing that when you-- 00:47:40.87\00:47:43.43 if you ask this question what would be the most mercy-- 00:47:43.46\00:47:45.70 common Dwight, take a break, take a chill pill. 00:47:45.73\00:47:49.56 What would be the most merciful way 00:47:49.59\00:47:51.24 for you to respond in this instance? 00:47:51.27\00:47:54.45 I just find that little nothic that 00:47:54.48\00:47:55.91 I just find it goes like that, 00:47:55.94\00:47:58.90 yeah, what's the deal? 00:47:58.93\00:48:00.07 I don't have to defend my right. 00:48:00.10\00:48:02.39 I don't have to prove that I have a creed 00:48:02.42\00:48:03.95 that demands perfection of everybody. 00:48:03.98\00:48:05.91 I don't have to prove anything at all, 00:48:05.94\00:48:07.69 the need right now is mercy. 00:48:07.72\00:48:09.98 And when I let that go, my stomach actually relaxes 00:48:10.01\00:48:13.78 and I'm in a path a bit more piece, 00:48:13.81\00:48:15.65 refreshing piece in my life. 00:48:15.68\00:48:18.56 Guys, look at I'm not there yet I know 00:48:18.59\00:48:20.91 but I'm telling you I had a few weeks ahead of you, 00:48:20.94\00:48:22.97 it really does work. 00:48:23.00\00:48:24.55 What would mercy do in this particular instance 00:48:24.58\00:48:28.60 with my wife, with my children, 00:48:28.63\00:48:31.27 with my friends, with my strangers, 00:48:31.30\00:48:33.76 with my colleagues with my employees, 00:48:33.79\00:48:36.35 what would it do? 00:48:36.38\00:48:37.49 Because the fact of the matter is 00:48:39.49\00:48:40.95 when mercy had a choice 00:48:40.98\00:48:42.71 between creed or need at Calvary, 00:48:42.74\00:48:46.54 now listen to me carefully when mercy had a choice 00:48:46.57\00:48:49.22 between creed or need at Calvary 00:48:49.25\00:48:53.06 mercy said we are going for need. 00:48:53.09\00:48:56.69 Because the creed is he is dead meat 00:48:56.72\00:49:00.02 she is dead, she has sinned. 00:49:00.05\00:49:02.64 The creed is clear you lost 00:49:02.67\00:49:05.79 but mercy said no, no, no... 00:49:05.82\00:49:08.72 when I'm around need goes over creed. 00:49:08.75\00:49:14.03 And so mercy stretched out his arms and died for me 00:49:14.06\00:49:18.15 knowing the creed but embrace the need. 00:49:18.18\00:49:22.30 And mercy triumphs over judgment. 00:49:22.33\00:49:25.91 And all, you know that song that we had 00:49:25.94\00:49:28.12 Nick Zoric sing a few Sabbath's ago 00:49:28.15\00:49:30.06 that song, when -- "When I could not reach mercy. 00:49:30.09\00:49:35.34 Mercy came running to me." Hallelujah. 00:49:35.37\00:49:39.79 Ladies and gentlemen, 00:49:39.82\00:49:43.06 when ever I go running to any of you in the future 00:49:43.09\00:49:47.73 I'm asking God, please 00:49:47.76\00:49:50.59 let mercy go running with me. 00:49:50.62\00:49:55.96 You want that too? 00:49:55.99\00:49:57.58 I want to be like Jesus, 00:49:57.61\00:49:59.06 I want to be like Jesus, don't you? 00:49:59.09\00:50:02.49 How many want to be like Jesus? 00:50:02.52\00:50:03.55 Come on, how many want to be like Jesus 00:50:03.58\00:50:05.61 and let mercy go running? 00:50:05.64\00:50:07.47 We called an audible during 00:50:07.50\00:50:09.51 between our worship first service and now, 00:50:09.54\00:50:12.54 because I heard what you are about to hear 00:50:12.57\00:50:14.12 in first church and I said oh, Jesus, this song 00:50:14.15\00:50:16.89 this glorious rendition of 00:50:16.92\00:50:20.81 "Jesus, the very thought of thee" 00:50:20.84\00:50:23.76 this song has got to be sung at this moment 00:50:23.79\00:50:27.18 because I want to be like Jesus 00:50:27.21\00:50:28.87 and I want Jesus to be reflected in me. 00:50:28.90\00:50:30.82 And so here is what I'm going to ask you to do 00:50:30.85\00:50:32.53 while Stephen Zork is coming forward. 00:50:32.56\00:50:34.26 I'm gonna ask you to take out your hymnal 00:50:34.29\00:50:36.00 and its hymn number 241. 00:50:36.03\00:50:38.02 There are gonna sing a rendition of this you never heard before, 00:50:38.05\00:50:40.92 241 this thing moves to a glorious climax. 00:50:40.95\00:50:45.19 Follow the words, pray the prayer, 00:50:45.22\00:50:47.89 I want you Jesus, I want to be like you. 00:50:47.92\00:50:50.70 Jesus, the very thought of Thee 00:51:30.09\00:51:38.09 With sweetness fills the breast 00:51:39.79\00:51:47.01 But sweeter far Thy face to see 00:51:49.24\00:51:55.24 And in Thy presence rest 00:51:59.21\00:52:06.21 Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame 00:52:15.86\00:52:21.86 Nor can the memory find 00:52:24.69\00:52:30.69 A sweeter sound than Thy blest Name 00:52:33.45\00:52:38.45 O Savior of mankind! 00:52:42.40\00:52:49.40 O hope of every contrite heart 00:53:09.59\00:53:15.59 O joy of all the meek 00:53:18.60\00:53:24.60 To those who fall, how kind Thou art! 00:53:27.67\00:53:34.67 How good to those who seek! 00:53:36.98\00:53:42.98 But what to those who find? 00:54:06.30\00:54:10.30 Ah, this Nor tongue 00:54:13.73\00:54:18.96 Nor pen can show 00:54:18.99\00:54:23.99 The love of Jesus, what it is 00:54:26.64\00:54:33.64 None but His loved ones know 00:54:36.71\00:54:43.18 Jesus, our only joy be Thou 00:55:36.31\00:55:42.31 As Thou our prize will be 00:55:45.57\00:55:49.57 Jesus be Thou our glory now 00:55:54.51\00:56:00.51 And through eternity 00:56:03.53\00:56:09.53 Jesus be Thou our glory now 00:56:13.40\00:56:19.90 And through eternity 00:56:27.26\00:56:31.93 Let me take one more moment of your time 00:56:58.70\00:57:00.38 to let you know that one of the blessings 00:57:00.41\00:57:01.76 I receive from this telecast 00:57:01.79\00:57:03.55 is being in touch with viewers like you, 00:57:03.58\00:57:05.38 all across Michiana and our nation 00:57:05.41\00:57:07.36 and literally the world. 00:57:07.39\00:57:09.14 I'm humbled and honored 00:57:09.17\00:57:10.20 with you sharing a journey with us. 00:57:10.23\00:57:11.59 Sometimes it's a Bible question, 00:57:11.62\00:57:13.33 other times it's an observation or suggestion 00:57:13.36\00:57:15.49 and sometimes just a note 00:57:15.52\00:57:16.84 to share a prayer or a prayer request. 00:57:16.87\00:57:19.07 I would love to hear from you 00:57:19.10\00:57:20.23 and it's so easy to be in touch. 00:57:20.26\00:57:21.82 Just go to our Pioneer Memorial Church website 00:57:21.85\00:57:24.14 www.pmchurch.tv 00:57:24.17\00:57:27.36 and click on contact and then the word Pastor 00:57:27.39\00:57:30.44 and then jot down the message you wish to send. 00:57:30.47\00:57:33.01 If you have a prayer request click on those words 00:57:33.04\00:57:35.67 or call our toll free number 1-877-HIS-WILL 00:57:35.70\00:57:40.00 and I promise you that our prayer partners 00:57:40.03\00:57:42.15 will lift your personal need to God 00:57:42.18\00:57:43.99 because nobody should have to journey alone, 00:57:44.02\00:57:46.36 not only do we have Jesus but we also have each other. 00:57:46.39\00:57:49.40 So write me won't you at www.pmchurch.tv 00:57:49.43\00:57:53.95 In the mean time may the God who's mercy 00:57:53.98\00:57:55.97 continually runs after us 00:57:56.00\00:57:57.77 be with you 24/7 every step of the way. 00:57:57.80\00:58:01.97 I'll see you again right here next time. 00:58:02.00\00:58:04.85
