00:14:24.85\00:14:26.63 It talks about how God is a God 00:14:26.66\00:14:30.23 who deserves our quietness, our stillness 00:14:30.26\00:14:35.31 and sometimes we just need to be still 00:20:40.47\00:20:43.44 even as the choir has sung it for us. 00:20:43.47\00:20:49.22 Glory to You in highest. 00:20:49.25\00:20:54.05 I cannot imagine what it would be like 00:20:54.08\00:20:57.35 when this Holy Scripture says, 00:20:57.38\00:20:58.71 from one Sabbath to the next, 00:20:58.74\00:21:02.07 and the earth made new we shall gather at Your feet 00:21:02.10\00:21:06.41 and with the thousands times than ten thousands 00:21:06.44\00:21:12.19 and thousands of thousands 00:21:12.22\00:21:16.38 we lift up our voices together, what? 00:21:16.41\00:21:19.61 What? 00:21:19.64\00:21:20.81 A moment that will be, we sing by faith, glory to you. 00:21:20.84\00:21:26.98 We wait by faith on You now that Holy Scripture 00:21:27.01\00:21:29.05 might not only engage our minds 00:21:29.08\00:21:32.19 but that it might address our hearts 00:21:32.22\00:21:33.72 that we might know, how to follow Jesus? 00:21:33.75\00:21:38.75 We pray in his name. 00:21:38.78\00:21:40.43 Amen. 00:21:40.46\00:21:43.06 The case of Dr. Eck... 00:21:43.09\00:21:47.27 I wish we could put the face of Dr. Eck 00:21:47.30\00:21:50.84 on the screen for you today. 00:21:50.87\00:21:54.28 I know if at least three sketches and paintings of him 00:21:54.31\00:21:58.09 and they are all contrary to each other, 00:21:58.12\00:22:00.03 so there are no help at all. 00:22:00.06\00:22:01.56 Fortunately, however we an eyewitness, 00:22:01.59\00:22:04.60 we have an eyewitness description of Dr. Eck, 00:22:04.63\00:22:08.21 on that June 27th day, 1519 at the University of Leipzig. 00:22:08.24\00:22:13.53 Actually, not only an eyewitness 00:22:15.35\00:22:17.07 of description of Dr. Eck, 00:22:17.10\00:22:18.65 he also-- this eyewitness describes the protagonist 00:22:18.68\00:22:22.06 in that 18-day debate, 00:22:22.09\00:22:25.58 a fellow German Martin Luther 00:22:25.61\00:22:27.81 and his sidekick Andreas Karlstadt. 00:22:27.84\00:22:31.90 So here is-- as I was reading 00:22:31.93\00:22:33.32 this eyewitness description of these three main players 00:22:33.35\00:22:39.91 in that memorable debate. 00:22:39.94\00:22:42.36 I kept thinking who am I thinking 00:22:42.39\00:22:44.23 of when this description 00:22:44.26\00:22:47.20 is applied to our congregation here. 00:22:47.23\00:22:49.43 You may think of somebody 00:22:49.46\00:22:50.82 that would fit these three descriptions, 00:22:50.85\00:22:52.63 now the eyewitness starts off with the Luther, 00:22:52.66\00:22:54.64 Martin he goes, "Martin is a middle height," 00:22:54.67\00:22:59.98 500 years ago people were shorter obviously 00:23:00.01\00:23:01.85 then they are today, so if this is a kind of average 00:23:01.88\00:23:05.52 then middle would be right here, 00:23:05.55\00:23:07.06 obviously not a very tall man, 00:23:07.09\00:23:08.76 "Martin is a middle height initiative from Karen Study 00:23:08.79\00:23:12.07 so that you can almost count his bones through his skin." 00:23:12.10\00:23:16.30 Seen anybody around you, like that? 00:23:16.33\00:23:18.66 "Almost count his bones through his skin. 00:23:18.69\00:23:20.29 He is in the vigor manhood 00:23:20.32\00:23:21.63 and has a clear penetrating voice, 00:23:21.66\00:23:24.33 he is affable and friendly 00:23:24.36\00:23:25.83 and in no sense dower or arrogant." 00:23:25.86\00:23:29.41 Kind of sounds like a friendly person to get to know 00:23:29.44\00:23:31.93 so that's Martin, that's Martin Luther. 00:23:31.96\00:23:34.20 Now here his sidekick Andreas Karlstadt, 00:23:34.23\00:23:37.53 "Karlstadt is smaller than Luther 00:23:37.56\00:23:39.29 with a complexion of smoke haring." 00:23:39.32\00:23:43.30 You know, I am not sure, is that a complement? 00:23:43.33\00:23:44.80 Smoke hairy, huh? 00:23:44.83\00:23:46.75 Anybody here you see? 00:23:46.78\00:23:48.19 No, smoked haring, mercy. 00:23:48.22\00:23:52.06 "Karlstadt is smaller than Luther 00:23:52.09\00:23:53.12 with a complexion of smoke haring, 00:23:53.15\00:23:54.24 his voice is thick and unpleasant, 00:23:54.27\00:23:56.59 he is slower of memory and quicker in anger." 00:23:56.62\00:23:59.95 All right that's two of the three, 00:23:59.98\00:24:01.48 now, Dr. Eck, here we go Eck. 00:24:01.51\00:24:06.04 "Eck is a heavy square set fellow 00:24:06.07\00:24:08.06 with a full German voice supported by a hefty chest," 00:24:08.09\00:24:13.79 you can picture can't you? 00:24:13.82\00:24:15.66 "He would make a tragedian that would be"-- 00:24:15.69\00:24:18.24 that is an actor in a great tragedies 00:24:18.27\00:24:20.04 that so that's a guy-- no PA is backed in 00:24:20.07\00:24:22.20 so he bellowing the lines out from the stage. 00:24:22.23\00:24:25.15 "He would make a tragedian or a town crier 00:24:25.18\00:24:28.03 but his voice is rather rough then clear," 00:24:28.06\00:24:30.46 so it's kind of a gravelling 00:24:30.49\00:24:31.81 you know gravelly kind of voice. 00:24:31.84\00:24:34.56 "His eyes and mouth and his whole face remind 00:24:34.59\00:24:37.14 one more of a butcher than a theologian." 00:24:37.17\00:24:40.64 And you are already picturing somebody. 00:24:40.67\00:24:43.55 But don't let the robust physique of Dr. Eck fool you. 00:24:43.58\00:24:48.17 One biographer describe him this way, 00:24:48.20\00:24:50.33 "despite his butchers face and bull's voice, 00:24:50.36\00:24:53.33 he was a man prodigious memory, 00:24:53.36\00:24:55.50 torrential fluency, and uncanny acumen, 00:24:55.53\00:24:58.97 a professional disputant or debater." 00:24:59.00\00:25:02.13 This is a guy that loves to get that microphone 00:25:02.16\00:25:06.26 and plunge into a debate. 00:25:06.29\00:25:08.16 And now the fame debate between, 00:25:08.19\00:25:09.44 Dr. Eck and Martin Luther, 00:25:09.47\00:25:10.50 the summer of 1519 at the University of Leipzig. 00:25:10.53\00:25:14.81 Now you remember two years earlier October, 31, 1517, 00:25:14.84\00:25:18.95 that young German Mark in his early to mid 30s unwittingly, 00:25:18.98\00:25:25.14 you remember ignited, 00:25:25.17\00:25:27.54 the mighty Protestant Reformation when he nailed up 00:25:27.57\00:25:30.09 on the University Cathedrals wooden doors. 00:25:30.12\00:25:32.43 He nailed up his 95 challenges to Rome sale of indulgences. 00:25:32.46\00:25:37.53 Now indulgences back then were, if you pay a little money, 00:25:37.56\00:25:40.59 you could shorten your time in purgatory, 00:25:40.62\00:25:42.34 you could shorten your mother's time or father's time 00:25:42.37\00:25:44.52 or were some loved one, all right. 00:25:44.55\00:25:47.24 So when Eck, your honest Eck, 00:25:47.27\00:25:49.93 when he finally gets a hold of these 95 theses, 00:25:49.96\00:25:52.78 these 95 challenges, he is a loyal son of the church 00:25:52.81\00:25:56.17 and he is a debater to the core and he says, 00:25:56.20\00:25:58.78 "bring on, that fellow German monk" 00:25:58.81\00:26:02.28 and Luther agrees actually, Eck went for Karlstadt first, 00:26:02.31\00:26:05.16 but he said-- his I was on Luther, 00:26:05.19\00:26:07.17 Luther agreed and the University of Leipzig 00:26:07.20\00:26:09.92 also agreed that they would host a debate. 00:26:09.95\00:26:12.60 So everything is set now 00:26:12.63\00:26:15.91 for this brilliant piece of logic that, 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.64 Eck has reserved for unsuspecting, Luther. 00:26:18.67\00:26:20.75 Luther has no idea it is gonna come. 00:26:20.78\00:26:23.30 And Luther the way faithful Roman Catholic himself 00:26:23.33\00:26:25.60 a Roman Catholic pastor and professor, 00:26:25.63\00:26:27.24 he has more and more off late been taking an anti Rome stance 00:26:27.27\00:26:31.86 in his teaching and preaching. 00:26:31.89\00:26:33.12 And now seven days into the debate, 00:26:33.15\00:26:35.76 can you imagine going for 18 days? 00:26:35.79\00:26:37.27 One week into that debate, Luther finally challenges, 00:26:37.30\00:26:42.26 he says, "look-- he challenges 00:26:42.29\00:26:44.17 the pope's divine right to primacy" 00:26:44.20\00:26:46.82 and he says, "look, whether you got one pope 00:26:46.85\00:26:48.36 or ten pope or a thousand pope's, 00:26:48.39\00:26:50.56 it doesn't matter we still got unity in the church" 00:26:50.59\00:26:53.29 to which, Eck fires back, 00:26:53.32\00:26:56.48 "I am marveled, that the reverend father 00:26:56.51\00:26:59.38 should forget the everlasting dissension 00:26:59.41\00:27:01.50 of the English and the French. 00:27:01.53\00:27:02.63 What do you mean we got unity in the church? 00:27:02.66\00:27:03.92 You got the French and the English, 00:27:03.95\00:27:05.45 the inviter hatred of the French for the Spaniards 00:27:05.48\00:27:09.53 "as for me I confess one faith, 00:27:09.56\00:27:14.66 one Lord Jesus Christ, 00:27:14.69\00:27:16.03 and I venerate the Roman pontiff as Christ Vicar." 00:27:16.06\00:27:21.12 In fact, Eck went on to hone his argument for the kill. 00:27:23.29\00:27:26.90 He said, "you know what, Martin? 00:27:26.93\00:27:28.47 You obviously are disciple of the Bohemian, Jan Huss." 00:27:28.50\00:27:33.51 And if you defend his writings then you are heretical, 00:27:33.54\00:27:36.22 erroneous, blasphemous, presumptuous, seditious, 00:27:36.25\00:27:38.84 and offensive to pious ears respectively. 00:27:38.87\00:27:42.64 Tell us how you really fell, Dr. Eck? 00:27:42.67\00:27:45.95 To which Luther fires back, 00:27:45.98\00:27:47.81 cries out word now hear the word, 00:27:47.84\00:27:49.05 here we go-- here is where we're going for this line. 00:27:49.08\00:27:51.35 He's throwing down the gantlet now. 00:27:51.38\00:27:53.46 Luther cries out "let me talk in German." 00:27:53.49\00:27:55.84 Apparently they're debating in Latin. 00:27:55.87\00:27:57.37 He said, let me-- let me-- because there is this gallery. 00:27:57.40\00:28:00.15 Let me speak the language to the people, 00:28:00.18\00:28:02.06 I'm being misunderstood by the people. 00:28:02.09\00:28:03.67 I assert, Luther declared that a church council 00:28:03.70\00:28:06.57 has sometimes heard and may sometimes are, 00:28:06.60\00:28:09.96 a council cannot make divine 00:28:09.99\00:28:11.21 right out of that which by nature is not divine right. 00:28:11.24\00:28:13.70 Councils have contradicted each other 00:28:13.73\00:28:15.42 a simple laymen here, he goes, 00:28:15.45\00:28:17.25 a simple laymen armed with scriptures to be-- 00:28:17.28\00:28:20.13 be believed above a pope or a council without it, 00:28:20.16\00:28:23.29 and asked for the pope's decretal on indulgences, 00:28:23.32\00:28:26.24 I say that "neither the church nor the pope 00:28:26.27\00:28:28.65 can establish articles of faith. 00:28:28.68\00:28:31.05 These must come from scripture" 00:28:31.08\00:28:33.16 and now here is his thrust "for the sake of scripture 00:28:33.19\00:28:36.81 we should reject pope and councils." 00:28:36.84\00:28:41.54 And there it was Luther's ringing challenge 00:28:43.76\00:28:46.59 to the Church of Rome. 00:28:46.62\00:28:47.74 All truth, all truth, must come sola scriptura, 00:28:47.77\00:28:54.06 Holy Scriptures only, 00:28:54.09\00:28:55.68 for that how do you put it here for the sake of scripture 00:28:55.71\00:28:57.98 we should reject pope and councils 00:28:58.01\00:29:00.46 and so it was ladies and gentlemen 00:29:00.49\00:29:01.66 that sola scriptura became our battle cry 00:29:01.69\00:29:07.14 of the mighty Protestant Reformation 00:29:07.17\00:29:09.33 and it becomes the first line by the way 00:29:09.36\00:29:10.57 that we want to scribble down in our study guide this morning 00:29:10.60\00:29:13.35 and so would you take study guide beside 00:30:04.33\00:30:06.39 "The Case of Dr. Eck" you click there, 00:30:06.42\00:30:07.84 you have the identical study guide and by the way, 00:30:07.87\00:30:09.91 those of you who are getting it off the web 00:30:09.94\00:30:12.04 the answer is in very small print are on the bottom. 00:30:12.07\00:30:14.66 So don't feel bad, if you miss something along the way, 00:30:14.69\00:30:16.69 you'll be able to double check yourself 00:30:16.72\00:30:19.19 at the end of that study guide. 00:30:19.22\00:30:20.60 All right, let's write it down, 00:30:20.63\00:30:21.66 line number one study guide all the way 00:30:21.69\00:30:23.19 that balcony you've got them up there? 00:30:23.22\00:30:25.30 Be patient, the ushers are coming to you, 00:30:25.33\00:30:27.14 but we need to go line number one, 00:30:27.17\00:30:29.00 the heart of the Leipzig debate July 1519 00:30:29.03\00:30:33.09 between Johannes Eck and Martin Luther 00:30:33.12\00:30:35.37 was over sola scriptura "only Holy Scripture," 00:30:35.40\00:30:40.68 as the great Protestant principal in premise, 00:30:40.71\00:30:44.20 only Holy Scripture. 00:30:44.23\00:30:46.18 Now, Eck has a position. 00:30:46.21\00:30:47.81 Jot it down, Eck championed the authority and primacy 00:30:47.84\00:30:50.84 of the church through councils and popes, 00:30:50.87\00:30:53.31 these are his words, we heard a moment ago, 00:30:53.34\00:30:55.04 "I venerate the Roman pontiff as Christ's vicar." 00:30:55.07\00:30:58.83 All right, that's exposition and here comes 00:30:58.86\00:31:01.23 Luke's-- Luther's rather. 00:31:01.26\00:31:02.77 Luther defended the authority and primacy of the scriptures 00:31:02.80\00:31:06.71 through study and prayer for the sake of scripture. 00:31:06.74\00:31:10.66 Luther, write out we should reject pope and councils. 00:31:10.69\00:31:13.98 One more line, "Thus the die was cast 00:31:14.01\00:31:16.12 and the gauntlet thrown down 00:31:16.15\00:31:17.28 sola scriptura versus church tradition." 00:31:17.31\00:31:20.97 That's the key, that's this big debate. 00:31:21.00\00:31:24.01 Scriptures only or scriptures plus church tradition. 00:31:24.04\00:31:28.59 That's-- that's the-- that's the nub, 00:31:28.62\00:31:31.22 which one carries a greater authority, 00:31:31.25\00:31:32.80 who won that debate? 00:31:32.83\00:31:33.87 It all depends on who you rooting for. 00:31:33.90\00:31:36.21 But it was in the on going written debate, 00:31:36.24\00:31:38.16 now listen to this guys, 00:31:38.19\00:31:39.22 in the ongoing written debate beyond Leipzig that, 00:31:39.25\00:31:42.35 Dr. Eck score perhaps is most-- 00:31:42.38\00:31:44.61 his most telling logical thrust at Luther. 00:31:44.64\00:31:48.66 As far as I know, we do not have a response from, 00:31:48.69\00:31:52.47 Luther on this one and I'm not surprised 00:31:52.50\00:31:54.89 there is no adequate logical response to Eck's thrust. 00:31:54.92\00:32:00.32 Now, Eck actually include this in a, 00:32:00.35\00:32:02.60 in a book he published it's entitled-- 00:32:02.63\00:32:06.19 you have it right there in your study guide. 00:32:06.22\00:32:07.97 Stunning rebuttal to sola scriptura, 00:32:08.00\00:32:10.97 fill it in, this is Eck writing now, 00:32:11.00\00:32:13.42 "If however the church," 00:32:13.45\00:32:15.73 the Roman Church "has had power to change 00:32:15.76\00:32:19.06 the Sabbath of the Bible into Sunday 00:32:19.09\00:32:23.09 and to command Sunday keeping 00:32:23.12\00:32:24.92 why should it not have this power 00:32:24.95\00:32:26.47 concerning other holy days?" 00:32:26.50\00:32:27.98 Because the reformers saying "hey, wait a minute no more-- 00:32:28.01\00:32:29.82 no more holy feast, we don't have those anymore" 00:32:29.85\00:32:32.15 and, Eck said, "hey, wait a minute, 00:32:32.18\00:32:33.27 come on guy's, please, 00:32:33.30\00:32:35.45 we change that Sabbath to Sunday, 00:32:35.48\00:32:37.10 why should we be able to have the powerful holy days. 00:32:37.13\00:32:39.86 Now notice the logic, "if you omit the latter, 00:32:39.89\00:32:42.94 you don't want the liturgical holy days 00:32:42.97\00:32:45.04 and you turn from the church to the scriptures alone, 00:32:45.07\00:32:48.18 sola scriptura, then you must keep the Sabbath with the Jews, 00:32:48.21\00:32:53.23 which has been kept from the be beginning of the world." 00:32:53.26\00:32:57.68 Cha-Chaing, huh? 00:32:57.71\00:33:02.69 Do you get that one? 00:33:02.72\00:33:05.59 Mercy, in other words, 00:33:05.62\00:33:11.60 you Protestants cannot have your cake, 00:33:11.63\00:33:14.94 I need it too, can't do it. 00:33:14.97\00:33:18.55 You say, you believe, Dr. Eck challenges, 00:33:18.58\00:33:20.36 you say, you believe in sola scriptura, 00:33:20.39\00:33:22.28 the Holy Scriptures only but if you really believe 00:33:22.31\00:33:24.67 that you would be worshipping 00:33:24.70\00:33:26.16 on the Seventh-day Sabbath, why? 00:33:26.19\00:33:27.56 Because everybody knows that 00:33:27.59\00:33:28.81 that is the only day postulated in Holy Scripture. 00:33:28.84\00:33:33.52 So I repeat, Dr. Eck just drives that thrust home, 00:33:33.55\00:33:37.57 I repeat if sola scriptura, jot this down will you? 00:33:37.60\00:33:44.01 "If sola scriptura is your reformation cry, 00:33:44.04\00:33:47.45 you must return to the Bible Sabbath or" 00:33:47.48\00:33:50.34 and his logic is searing here, 00:33:50.37\00:33:52.14 "or you must reject sola scriptura 00:33:52.17\00:33:55.38 and accept Rome's claim to determine divine truth, 00:33:55.41\00:33:58.45 evidenced by her power to change the Sabbath to Sunday." 00:33:58.48\00:34:03.49 You got two choices boys, which will it be? 00:34:03.52\00:34:09.40 Because even in the time of Luther and Eck, 00:34:09.43\00:34:10.99 everybody knew that Rome claimed 00:34:11.02\00:34:13.61 to have change the day of worship 00:34:13.64\00:34:14.79 from Sabbath to Sunday. 00:34:14.82\00:34:16.60 I'll tell you what ladies and gentlemen, 00:34:16.63\00:34:17.66 it was brilliant. 00:34:17.69\00:34:19.01 It was a double bind, double thrust piece of logic 00:34:19.04\00:34:24.80 for which neither Luther nor any Protestant today 00:34:24.83\00:34:28.80 has offered an adequate response. 00:34:28.83\00:34:34.59 In other words, Eck was right. 00:34:34.62\00:34:37.07 You can have your cake and eat it too. 00:34:37.10\00:34:38.78 You must either accept the Seventh-day Sabbath 00:34:38.81\00:34:40.34 of the Bible or you must accept the authority 00:34:40.37\00:34:42.28 of the Church of Rome, 00:34:42.31\00:34:43.34 which claims to have changed the day 00:34:43.37\00:34:44.40 of worship to the day of the Sun, 00:34:44.43\00:34:45.83 the venerated day in the Sun. 00:34:45.86\00:34:49.60 There's no other authoritative stance 00:34:49.63\00:34:52.75 or reason for keeping Sunday, save the authority of Rome. 00:34:52.78\00:34:57.68 That is Eck's logic, in "The Case of Dr. Eck." 00:34:57.71\00:35:03.12 And by the way if Eck is right, 00:35:06.00\00:35:08.80 then you might as well throw the Protestant principal 00:35:08.83\00:35:10.72 of sola scriptura out the window, 00:35:10.75\00:35:13.21 it will not hold water. 00:35:13.24\00:35:17.38 There is one another bit of fascinating history 00:35:17.41\00:35:18.95 that I never knew before. 00:35:18.98\00:35:21.07 A few weeks ago, the first time I ever heard of this one, 00:35:21.10\00:35:24.72 you remember that in response to the Protestant Reformation, 00:35:24.75\00:35:27.65 the Church of Rome convened a major church council. 00:35:27.68\00:35:31.41 Well, this isn't a surprise, 00:35:31.44\00:35:32.68 everybody knows about that the Council of Trent, 00:35:32.71\00:35:35.70 it was convened in March of 1545 00:35:35.73\00:35:38.74 and preceded with interruptions until 1564 almost 20 years. 00:35:38.77\00:35:43.23 Now here's the part, it was a surprise to me 00:35:43.26\00:35:45.53 and this may be a surprise to you as well, 00:35:45.56\00:35:47.78 it turns out that in the debate of the Council of Trent 00:35:47.81\00:35:50.25 and they're wondering how shall we meet the challenge 00:35:50.28\00:35:52.75 of the Protestant Reformation? 00:35:52.78\00:35:54.74 It turns out that in that debate 00:35:54.77\00:35:56.62 there was a large group of influential churchmen 00:35:56.65\00:35:59.45 at the council who began to advocate 00:35:59.48\00:36:01.90 that the Church of Rome ought to abandon this idea 00:36:01.93\00:36:04.55 of tradition plus scripture 00:36:04.58\00:36:06.21 and in fact embraced the Reformation's 00:36:06.24\00:36:09.15 premise sola scriptura. 00:36:09.18\00:36:12.01 They are championing it within the Church of Rome, 00:36:12.04\00:36:15.81 to the place they finally the papal legates 00:36:15.84\00:36:18.04 write back to the Vatican and they say, 00:36:18.07\00:36:19.41 "we are gridlocked, 00:36:19.44\00:36:20.52 and it looks like they're going to carry the day." 00:36:20.55\00:36:25.90 Sixteen sessions of the Council of Trent have ended 00:36:25.93\00:36:31.07 and it is clear now that they are still at loggerheads 00:36:31.10\00:36:34.56 on this question when on the beginning 00:36:34.59\00:36:36.24 of the 17th session held on January 18th, 1552, 00:36:36.27\00:36:39.43 the Archbishop of Reggio Gaspar del Fosso 00:36:39.46\00:36:44.08 stood up and made a speech that ended up carrying the day 00:36:44.11\00:36:48.04 and here's his speech, 00:36:48.07\00:36:49.12 in fact you have a portion of his speech 00:36:49.15\00:36:51.01 in your study guide, I want you to-- 00:36:51.04\00:36:52.60 I want you to hang onto this little speech, 00:36:52.63\00:36:54.79 you hang on to it. 00:36:54.82\00:36:56.58 The Archbishop of Reggio 00:36:56.61\00:36:58.48 stood before the assembled Council 00:36:58.51\00:37:00.84 and he made this statement, 00:37:00.87\00:37:03.08 such-- you see there in the study guide? 00:37:03.11\00:37:05.16 "Such is the condition of the heretics." 00:37:05.19\00:37:07.18 He is talking about the Protestant Reformance, 00:37:07.21\00:37:09.58 "such is the condition of the heretics today 00:37:09.61\00:37:11.33 that they appeal to no other matter 00:37:11.36\00:37:13.41 more than that they under the pretense 00:37:13.44\00:37:15.27 of the Word of God, 00:37:15.30\00:37:16.70 overthrow the Roman Church" what he's saying is innocent, 00:37:16.73\00:37:19.23 you know what they're doing they're saying, 00:37:19.26\00:37:20.40 "it's the Bible and the Bible alone." 00:37:20.43\00:37:22.61 That's how they throughout this whole church thing. 00:37:22.64\00:37:24.58 But I want to tell you, 00:37:24.61\00:37:25.74 he goes on now, now look notice. 00:37:25.77\00:37:27.27 "Yet the authority of the Church 00:37:27.30\00:37:29.18 is most gloriously set forth by the scriptures 00:37:29.21\00:37:32.46 for a while on the one hand the church 00:37:32.49\00:37:36.24 she recommends them the scriptures" 00:37:36.27\00:37:38.46 now watch this "on the other hand 00:37:38.49\00:37:40.93 the legal precepts of the Lord contained in them 00:37:40.96\00:37:44.17 that would be the law. 00:37:44.20\00:37:45.82 Those precepts have ceased 00:37:45.85\00:37:47.35 by virtue of the same authority. 00:37:47.38\00:37:49.42 We declare that it no longer 00:37:49.45\00:37:51.83 holds the legal precepts of God." 00:37:51.86\00:37:54.95 Now gentleman, and he's making his point, 00:37:54.98\00:37:56.51 let me give you a case in point. 00:37:56.54\00:37:58.52 "The Sabbath" jot that in please 00:37:58.55\00:38:00.51 "the Sabbath" now here's his illustration 00:38:00.54\00:38:03.00 "the Sabbath, the most glorious day in the law 00:38:03.03\00:38:05.95 has been changed to the Lord's Day 00:38:05.98\00:38:08.18 by virtue of the authority of the Church. 00:38:08.21\00:38:10.45 Should this authority cease 00:38:10.48\00:38:11.90 which will surely please heretics, 00:38:11.93\00:38:13.94 who would then witness for truth 00:38:13.97\00:38:15.88 and confound the obstinacy of the heretics? 00:38:15.91\00:38:19.44 Now do you get what he's saying? 00:38:19.47\00:38:20.79 Let me run it by you one more time, 00:38:20.82\00:38:22.14 you have it there, it'll take awhile its old English, 00:38:22.17\00:38:24.21 you'll-- you'll have to kind a brood over later. 00:38:24.24\00:38:27.12 Let me run it by you one more time, 00:38:27.15\00:38:29.14 i.e., -- here is what del Fosso is saying, 00:38:29.17\00:38:32.14 "i.e., if we as a church choose sola scriptura, 00:38:32.17\00:38:37.46 we will lose our authority as the ruling church. 00:38:37.49\00:38:42.31 Therefore, we must reject sola scriptura 00:38:42.34\00:38:44.94 in favor of tradition that grants us our authority, 00:38:44.97\00:38:48.04 authority proven by the way by the fact 00:38:48.07\00:38:49.99 that we change the Sabbath to Sunday." 00:38:50.02\00:38:52.52 We can't go down that road gentleman, 00:38:52.55\00:38:55.67 and the speech carried the day. 00:38:55.70\00:38:57.67 And he did it brilliantly just as, 00:39:01.62\00:39:03.52 Dr. Eck had done earlier by appealing 00:39:03.55\00:39:06.03 to Rome's change of the Sabbath to Sunday as the reason 00:39:06.06\00:39:08.76 why the tradition of the Church Council imposed, 00:39:08.79\00:39:10.99 couldn't be and should be elevated above Holy Scripture. 00:39:11.02\00:39:14.57 Ladies and gentlemen, some of you are into law, 00:39:14.60\00:39:16.46 we have some lawyers here it's called circular reasoning. 00:39:16.49\00:39:19.90 And it goes like this, 00:39:19.93\00:39:21.39 the proof that we have the power 00:39:21.42\00:39:23.22 and authority to change the scripture 00:39:23.25\00:39:25.53 is that we change the scripture. 00:39:25.56\00:39:28.00 You can argue that forever, its circular reasoning. 00:39:31.15\00:39:35.41 But it carried the day, jot it down, 00:39:35.44\00:39:36.81 "at the council of Trent sola scriptura 00:39:36.84\00:39:39.18 was finally and officially 00:39:39.21\00:39:40.78 superseded by church tradition." 00:39:40.81\00:39:45.85 Because there's no other authoritative reason 00:39:45.88\00:39:47.19 for keeping Sunday except 00:39:47.22\00:39:48.29 for the authority of the Roman Church, 00:39:48.32\00:39:49.57 that you-- you can go anywhere. 00:39:49.60\00:39:51.42 You said, what about the New Testament. 00:39:51.45\00:39:53.33 Let me tell you something, jot this down, 00:39:53.36\00:39:54.69 there are eight references in the New Testament 00:39:54.72\00:39:56.62 to the first day the week. 00:39:56.65\00:39:57.69 Only eight of them, six of those references, 00:39:57.72\00:39:59.74 jot it down please, "six of those references 00:39:59.77\00:40:02.02 have to do with a glorious resurrection of the Lord, 00:40:02.05\00:40:04.34 Jesus Christ on the first day of the week." 00:40:04.37\00:40:06.07 No contest there, everybody knew that. 00:40:06.10\00:40:08.82 One of them, Acts 20:7 has to do, 00:40:08.85\00:40:11.45 and jot this down please, 00:40:11.48\00:40:12.74 it actually is "describing a Saturday night meeting 00:40:12.77\00:40:15.87 because Saturday night 00:40:15.90\00:40:16.99 is a dark part in the first day," 00:40:17.02\00:40:18.52 which would be Sunday. 00:40:18.55\00:40:19.62 "A Saturday night gathering 00:40:19.65\00:40:20.86 of Christians with Paul in Troas." 00:40:20.89\00:40:22.47 In fact, the New English Bible comes along 00:40:22.50\00:40:23.93 and translates Acts 20:7, as Saturday night. 00:40:23.96\00:40:27.83 No, no contest there, that leaves only one, 00:40:27.86\00:40:30.26 the final of the eight, 00:40:30.29\00:40:32.40 it's when Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 16:1 00:40:32.43\00:40:35.51 he writes to the Christians in court 00:40:35.54\00:40:36.83 and then he says, "hey, listen guys, 00:40:36.86\00:40:38.07 I want to take financial stock every first day of the new week 00:40:38.10\00:40:41.82 in order to set money aside at home," 00:40:41.85\00:40:44.43 put it by you at home, it doesn't go to church, 00:40:44.46\00:40:46.28 it says, "put it by you at home 00:40:46.31\00:40:47.91 for famine relief aid for Christians in Jerusalem," 00:40:47.94\00:40:51.07 keep your pen moving, 00:40:51.10\00:40:52.50 "not one of these eight even remotely suggests 00:40:52.53\00:40:55.41 God changed his mind and his Seventh-day Sabbath," 00:40:55.44\00:40:58.38 it's just not there. 00:40:58.41\00:41:00.44 Let it be repeated, the only remaining reason 00:41:00.47\00:41:03.32 for keeping Sunday instead of Sabbath 00:41:03.35\00:41:05.96 is to accept the authority claimed by the Roman Church. 00:41:05.99\00:41:10.62 That was the case of Dr. Eck, and the rest is history. 00:41:10.65\00:41:18.59 A history that Jesus surely was not unmindful of, 00:41:18.62\00:41:22.30 when He uttered the sternest renunciation 00:41:22.33\00:41:25.15 and condemnation of tradition 00:41:25.18\00:41:27.91 anywhere in the sacred literature. 00:41:27.94\00:41:30.88 Now, we open the Bible, I want you to take a look at 00:41:30.91\00:41:32.69 the gospel of Saint Mark, take a look at this, 00:41:32.72\00:41:36.97 it is almost as if Jesus spoke these words 00:41:37.00\00:41:39.37 after the Council of Trent decision. 00:41:39.40\00:41:42.70 The gospel of Mark, Mark 7, if you didn't bring the Bible, 00:41:42.73\00:41:45.41 grab the pew Bible in front of you, 00:41:45.44\00:41:46.71 it will be page 678, in that pew Bible Mark 7. 00:41:46.74\00:41:50.98 I'm gonna read the first three verses here, 00:41:51.01\00:41:53.43 Mark 7, Mark 7:1 "Then the Pharisees 00:41:53.46\00:41:59.70 and some of the scribes came together" 00:41:59.73\00:42:01.44 these are the religiously, all right. 00:42:01.47\00:42:03.74 These are the professionals, "some of those Pharisees 00:42:03.77\00:42:08.79 and some of the scribes came together 00:42:08.82\00:42:09.89 to Jesus, having come from Jerusalem." 00:42:09.92\00:42:11.59 He was up in Galilee. 00:42:11.62\00:42:12.75 Now verse 2, "When they saw 00:42:12.78\00:42:14.25 some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, 00:42:14.28\00:42:16.91 that is, unwashed hands," "they found fault." 00:42:16.94\00:42:22.42 Verse 3 "For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat 00:42:22.45\00:42:26.58 unless they wash their hands in a special way, 00:42:26.61\00:42:30.30 holding the tradition of the elders." 00:42:30.33\00:42:34.90 Now put a quotation in your study guide 00:42:34.93\00:42:36.49 from the Bible Commentary, take a look at this, 00:42:36.52\00:42:38.14 so don't take my word for it, here's a reputable commentary. 00:42:38.17\00:42:42.04 Let me just read that quotation with you, 00:42:42.07\00:42:43.47 "The washing here referred to was strictly ritualistic" 00:42:43.50\00:42:46.48 write it down "not sanitary," this is not the kind of washing 00:42:46.51\00:42:49.77 when you were a kid and you came in at supper time 00:42:49.80\00:42:51.66 and your mom says, "show me your hands. 00:42:51.69\00:42:52.72 Did you wash your hand?" "I wash my hands." 00:42:52.75\00:42:53.94 "Show me your hands, let me see. 00:42:53.97\00:42:55.02 Because you didn't wash-- did you use soap?" 00:42:55.05\00:42:57.04 "No." 00:42:57.07\00:42:58.10 "Did you use water?" "No." 00:42:58.13\00:42:59.17 "What did you do?" "Wipe it on a towel?" 00:42:59.20\00:43:00.24 "Yep." "Go back." 00:43:00.27\00:43:02.45 Come on, you remember your Mom doing that? 00:43:02.48\00:43:04.10 "Let me see those hands again boy." 00:43:04.13\00:43:07.33 This is not sanitary watch-- washing, 00:43:07.36\00:43:09.40 the washing here referred 00:43:09.43\00:43:10.48 to a strictly ritualistic, not sanitary. 00:43:10.51\00:43:13.74 Now watch this, "this right is said 00:43:13.77\00:43:16.30 to have consisted of pouring a small amount of-- 00:43:16.33\00:43:19.63 small quantity of water up on the fingers 00:43:19.66\00:43:22.15 and palm of first one hand and then the other hand tilted 00:43:22.18\00:43:27.59 so that the water ran from the Palm 00:43:27.62\00:43:29.64 to the wrist but no further." 00:43:29.67\00:43:31.77 So you get just as little bit of water 00:43:31.80\00:43:33.30 and you get a movement in your hand, 00:43:33.33\00:43:34.73 so it's kind of clumsy 00:43:34.76\00:43:36.03 and you roll it up to your wrists. 00:43:36.06\00:43:37.71 You can't let it go down your arm, 00:43:37.74\00:43:39.26 you have to stop it, and you cannot, 00:43:39.29\00:43:41.13 as a quotation goes on to say, 00:43:41.16\00:43:42.24 you cannot let it go back into the palm 00:43:42.27\00:43:44.23 because that ruins the whole ritual. 00:43:44.26\00:43:45.69 So you have to get that water just bounce it up on your wrist 00:43:45.72\00:43:48.10 and then quickly turn your palms over 00:43:48.13\00:43:49.69 and wipe your hands 00:43:49.72\00:43:50.90 and then you have ritually washed. 00:43:50.93\00:43:54.88 How much water should we use? 00:43:54.91\00:43:56.11 Well, that's a great question, 00:43:56.14\00:43:57.36 read on here "the minimum amount of water 00:43:57.39\00:43:59.30 prescribed was that which would be contained 00:43:59.33\00:44:01.15 in one and a half egg shells." 00:44:01.18\00:44:04.46 That's how much water to use. 00:44:04.49\00:44:06.53 "It seems however I thought this was"-- 00:44:06.56\00:44:08.89 listen to this "it seems, however, 00:44:08.92\00:44:10.60 that where water was not available 00:44:10.63\00:44:12.35 a dry ablution was permitted 00:44:12.38\00:44:14.98 in which a person would simply go through 00:44:15.01\00:44:17.00 the motions of washing his hands 00:44:17.03\00:44:18.95 in the prescribed manner." 00:44:18.98\00:44:20.83 There's no water here, what are you doing? 00:44:20.86\00:44:22.22 I don't know, I'm just doing it, 00:44:22.25\00:44:23.43 there is no water-- what do you think I washed? 00:44:23.46\00:44:24.78 Yes, I'm. I'm doing this. 00:44:24.81\00:44:26.38 What's going on ladies and gentlemen? 00:44:26.41\00:44:27.57 You know what's going on? 00:44:27.60\00:44:28.66 This little ritual has been created 00:44:28.69\00:44:30.54 so that those who imbibe in it are declared 00:44:30.57\00:44:33.22 all those who are watching-- washing, I-- 00:44:33.25\00:44:36.19 I have found a measure of holiness in my life. 00:44:36.22\00:44:40.78 No water at all, no, I'm just pretending, 00:44:40.81\00:44:44.33 but, but I have the motions. 00:44:44.36\00:44:51.78 Is there a place in Holy Scripture 00:44:51.81\00:44:53.24 where God prescribes washing like that? 00:44:53.27\00:44:56.30 Absolutely not. What's happened? 00:44:56.33\00:44:58.88 It's the oral tradition of the elders. 00:44:58.91\00:45:01.17 In massive body oral rabbinical regulations 00:45:01.20\00:45:03.31 that have grown up around the Tara, 00:45:03.34\00:45:04.87 in some cases the oral tradition 00:45:04.90\00:45:06.52 came to be regarded as more sacred than the law itself. 00:45:06.55\00:45:11.06 And Christ is with fury, 00:45:11.09\00:45:15.04 attacking the traditions of that religious community. 00:45:15.07\00:45:22.47 And so the Pharisees come to him 00:45:22.50\00:45:23.78 and look drop to verse 5 00:45:23.81\00:45:24.88 "Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, 00:45:24.91\00:45:26.49 "Why do Your disciples not walk 00:45:26.52\00:45:28.21 according to the tradition of the elders, 00:45:28.24\00:45:29.95 but eat bread with unwashed hands?'" 00:45:29.98\00:45:31.55 and here it come Jesus answered 00:45:31.58\00:45:33.40 the sternest words He has spoken about 00:45:33.43\00:45:34.95 tradition in all scripture He answered and said to them, 00:45:34.98\00:45:38.05 "Well, did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, 00:45:38.08\00:45:41.19 as it is written, This people honors Me 00:45:41.22\00:45:43.67 with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 00:45:43.70\00:45:46.32 And in vain they worship Me, 00:45:46.35\00:45:48.93 Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." 00:45:48.96\00:45:51.68 Almost as if He were speaking the words, 00:45:51.71\00:45:53.76 after the Council of Trent verse 8 00:45:53.79\00:45:55.80 "For laying aside the commandment of God, 00:45:55.83\00:45:58.19 you hold the tradition of men 00:45:58.22\00:45:59.67 the washing of pitchers and cups, 00:45:59.70\00:46:00.89 and many other such things that you do." 00:46:00.92\00:46:03.06 He said, verse 9 "He said to them, 00:46:03.09\00:46:05.24 'All too well you reject the commandment of God, 00:46:05.27\00:46:09.12 that you may keep your tradition.' 00:46:09.15\00:46:13.99 " Jot it down, ladies and gentlemen, 00:46:14.02\00:46:15.35 shades of "The Case of Dr. Eck." 00:46:15.38\00:46:18.40 Write it down "you reject the command," 00:46:18.43\00:46:20.49 I inserted the word fourth 00:46:20.52\00:46:22.20 "you reject the fourth commandment of God 00:46:22.23\00:46:24.25 that you may keep your tradition." 00:46:24.28\00:46:27.23 Thus Jesus says, keep writing, "in vain you worship Me, 00:46:27.26\00:46:30.44 teaching as doctrines the commandments of man." 00:46:30.47\00:46:33.96 You know what, it is almost as if Jesus were addressing, 00:46:33.99\00:46:37.84 Dr. Eck, the archbishop, the tradition of Rome 00:46:37.87\00:46:40.97 and Protestants today you have made the word of God 00:46:41.00\00:46:44.04 of no effect through your tradition. 00:46:44.07\00:46:47.40 It's a direct quote from verse 13, 00:46:47.43\00:46:49.95 "you've made it have no effect 00:46:49.98\00:46:51.12 through your tradition which you have handed down." 00:46:51.15\00:46:56.01 There it is ladies and gentlemen, 00:46:56.04\00:46:57.11 sola scriptura or church tradition. 00:46:57.14\00:47:00.02 How do we choose? How shall we respond? 00:47:00.05\00:47:03.74 Fact to the matter is for every Roman Catholic 00:47:03.77\00:47:08.13 faithful today for every faithful Protestant, 00:47:08.16\00:47:10.07 you know, what, for all of us as Christians, 00:47:10.10\00:47:11.51 for all of us as Christians, 00:47:11.54\00:47:14.18 when it comes to the day of worship, 00:47:14.21\00:47:17.82 there are only two possible responses. 00:47:17.85\00:47:24.38 Response number one, 00:47:24.41\00:47:26.27 embrace the Seventh-day Sabbath, 00:47:26.30\00:47:28.28 the Holy Scripture the gift of the creative 00:47:28.31\00:47:30.15 the human race, that's response number one. 00:47:30.18\00:47:31.72 Response number two, 00:47:31.75\00:47:34.63 we can accept Rome's veneration of Sunday 00:47:34.66\00:47:38.50 and acknowledge her 00:47:38.53\00:47:40.32 to be the ultimate orbiter of divine truth. 00:47:40.35\00:47:44.18 There is no third choice, there-- 00:47:44.21\00:47:45.38 there just is no other option. 00:47:45.41\00:47:50.66 Which is why I should-- should not have been stern 00:47:50.69\00:47:54.03 when I learned this last May of the resignation 00:47:54.06\00:48:00.56 of Dr. Frank Beckwith, former President 00:48:00.59\00:48:03.83 of the Evangelical Theological Society, 00:48:03.86\00:48:06.53 one of the most prestigious 00:48:06.56\00:48:08.38 theological societies in the world. 00:48:08.41\00:48:12.66 After his resignation, the Executive Committee 00:48:12.69\00:48:14.89 of the Evangelical Theological Society 00:48:14.92\00:48:18.60 released this statement to the press 00:48:18.63\00:48:20.46 and I have a copy of it right here. 00:48:20.49\00:48:23.20 It was released on May, 8th of this last year, all right. 00:48:23.23\00:48:26.74 I'm reading now "on May 5 last year, 00:48:26.77\00:48:30.34 Dr. Frank Beckwith resigned 00:48:30.37\00:48:31.80 as President of the Evangelical Theological Society, 00:48:31.83\00:48:35.89 this resignation has come as a result of his decision 00:48:35.92\00:48:38.01 to be received into full communion 00:48:38.04\00:48:39.85 in the Roman Catholic Church, which he did on April 29, 00:48:39.88\00:48:44.25 Dr. Beckwith has informed executive committee 00:48:44.28\00:48:46.25 that this was a decision he came to after "much prayer, 00:48:46.28\00:48:51.11 council, and consideration, 00:48:51.14\00:48:54.45 the members of the executive committee wish, 00:48:54.48\00:48:56.05 Dr. Beckwith well in his ongoing professional work, 00:48:56.08\00:48:59.15 we've come to appreciate him as a scholar 00:48:59.18\00:49:02.03 and as a friend, and so we thank, 00:49:02.06\00:49:03.53 Dr. Beckwith for his service to the society. 00:49:03.56\00:49:07.45 The work of the Evangelical Theological Society 00:49:07.48\00:49:09.56 as a scholarly form precedes on the basis 00:49:09.59\00:49:12.21 that the Bible alone-- in the Bible in its entirety 00:49:12.24\00:49:18.22 is the word of God written. 00:49:18.25\00:49:21.01 Where as the Roman Catholic Church 00:49:21.04\00:49:23.88 posits a larger canon of scripture, 00:49:23.91\00:49:26.45 then that recognized by Evangelical Protestants 00:49:26.48\00:49:28.81 including its canon several writings from the Apocrypha. 00:49:28.84\00:49:31.64 It also extends the quality of infallibility 00:49:31.67\00:49:33.86 to certain expressions of Church Dogma 00:49:33.89\00:49:35.85 issued by the magisterium, 00:49:35.88\00:49:37.28 the teaching office of the Roman Catholic Church 00:49:37.31\00:49:39.48 as well as certain pronouncements of the pope, 00:49:39.51\00:49:41.92 which are delivered ex cathedra 00:49:41.95\00:49:43.47 such as doctrines about the Immaculate Conception 00:49:43.50\00:49:46.27 and bodily assumption of Mary." 00:49:46.30\00:49:50.51 Ladies and gentlemen, "The Case of Dr. Eck," 00:49:50.54\00:49:53.49 and the decision of Dr. Beckwith 00:49:53.52\00:49:56.40 are entirely logical and laudable. 00:49:56.43\00:50:02.88 If sola scriptura is not the defining premise, 00:50:02.91\00:50:08.64 if however you embrace sola scripture 00:50:08.67\00:50:15.24 then you must choose to live your life 00:50:15.27\00:50:19.17 in obedience to Jesus Christ and His Holy Scriptures, 00:50:19.20\00:50:22.14 and the day of worship will be defined 00:50:22.17\00:50:25.11 by the example of Christ Himself. 00:50:25.14\00:50:30.40 You say, "hey, listen Dwight come on please, please, please 00:50:30.43\00:50:33.23 what's a big deal, what's the matter? 00:50:33.26\00:50:36.18 I think he know, some, for some its this way, 00:50:36.21\00:50:39.07 for some it's that way, long as-- 00:50:39.10\00:50:40.95 as long as our hearts are faithful to God." 00:50:40.98\00:50:46.34 I want to share with you the final piece next Sabbath. 00:50:46.37\00:50:50.28 Next week in the final piece, 00:50:50.31\00:50:51.44 I want to share with you a dramatic-- 00:50:51.47\00:50:54.61 a dramatic segment out of apocalyptic prophecy. 00:50:54.64\00:51:01.72 The teaching next week, our last teaching 00:51:01.75\00:51:03.16 I hope you're here for that one, 00:51:03.19\00:51:04.30 the teaching next week 00:51:04.33\00:51:05.94 "A Test Very Simply and Highly Visible" 00:51:05.97\00:51:12.26 because of apocalyptic prophecy is true, 00:51:12.29\00:51:15.51 it will come down to a final exam. 00:51:15.54\00:51:18.14 Very simple, highly visible 00:51:18.17\00:51:21.54 and the answer to the question, what does it matter? 00:51:21.57\00:51:24.20 Becomes crystal clear. 00:51:24.23\00:51:27.67 I've stood on that hallow peace of earth, 00:51:27.70\00:51:30.91 where in the grass is embedded a plaque, 00:51:30.94\00:51:34.50 announcing that here on April 18, 1521, 00:51:34.53\00:51:37.80 Martin Luther stood and defended his faith 00:51:37.83\00:51:43.10 before the Imperial Council of Diet of Worms. 00:51:43.13\00:51:48.14 Scholars are not sure, how Luther's speech ended, 00:51:48.17\00:51:52.82 nobody wrote it down, its is amazing 00:51:52.85\00:51:54.55 because it-- his entire remarks were transcribed 00:51:54.58\00:51:57.68 but some scholars were suggesting that 00:51:57.71\00:51:59.67 the audience was so moved by Luther's final words 00:51:59.70\00:52:04.06 that it was just silence and nobody scribbled it down. 00:52:04.09\00:52:07.37 Some months later, the final words 00:52:07.40\00:52:09.68 were rendered in writing and they are these, 00:52:09.71\00:52:13.75 "Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise, God help me. 00:52:13.78\00:52:20.94 Amen." 00:52:20.97\00:52:23.84 Now it's true, Martin Luther did not live long enough 00:52:23.87\00:52:27.24 to recover all the Bible truth 00:52:27.27\00:52:28.71 that had become buried by church tradition. 00:52:28.74\00:52:30.57 During a long dark and middle ages, 00:52:30.60\00:52:32.28 that's absolutely true. 00:52:32.31\00:52:34.14 Martin Luther in his one short lifetime 00:52:34.17\00:52:36.55 spent his energies focusing the church 00:52:36.58\00:52:38.73 and the world on Jesus as Lord of salvation. 00:52:38.76\00:52:41.87 No time for any exploration about 00:52:41.90\00:52:45.11 Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath. 00:52:45.14\00:52:47.43 But the fact is ladies and gentlemen, 00:52:47.46\00:52:48.99 today the bright light of divine truth 00:52:49.02\00:52:52.54 is surely raising up another generation 00:52:52.57\00:52:57.56 of young reformers. 00:52:57.59\00:53:00.66 It seems today that the light is bright enough 00:53:00.69\00:53:06.68 and the time is right enough. 00:53:06.71\00:53:10.00 For generation of men, women, and young adults 00:53:10.03\00:53:14.16 to stand up in the same way 00:53:14.19\00:53:17.75 and in standing declare that 00:53:17.78\00:53:21.10 they will embrace the creator salvation 00:53:21.13\00:53:26.22 and the creator Sabbath 00:53:26.25\00:53:30.11 with a courage born of conviction 00:53:30.14\00:53:34.47 that this is the only stand 00:53:34.50\00:53:38.01 I can logically and biblically take. 00:53:38.04\00:53:44.85 Here I to stand, I can do no other, 00:53:44.88\00:53:51.19 so help me God. 00:53:51.22\00:53:52.93 Amen. 00:53:52.96\00:53:55.25 We do you think about that? 00:53:55.28\00:53:57.07 That's a really gutsy stance, isn't it? 00:53:57.10\00:53:59.55 But you know, what I believe 00:53:59.58\00:54:00.63 God is raising up a generation of young reformers, 00:54:00.66\00:54:05.00 I want to make an invitation, if you 30 or younger, 00:54:05.03\00:54:08.74 if you're 30 or younger right now, and you be willing, 00:54:08.77\00:54:15.65 even if you stood all alone to take that 00:54:15.68\00:54:17.69 same stand so help me God, I will stand on sola scriptura, 00:54:17.72\00:54:24.13 I will stand on this book to the heavens fall. 00:54:24.16\00:54:27.47 If you're 30 or younger 00:54:27.50\00:54:29.07 and you're willing to take that stand, 00:54:29.10\00:54:30.24 I wish you'd stand right now. 00:54:30.27\00:54:32.27 Thirty or younger, 30 or younger, 00:54:32.30\00:54:39.83 I'm willing to stand, so help me God 00:54:44.49\00:54:48.40 if I stand alone-- here I stand, hallelujah. 00:54:48.43\00:54:54.30 How about this, if you're 30 or older, 00:54:54.33\00:54:59.78 a pretty much would bring the rest of us here, 00:54:59.81\00:55:01.91 and if you're 30 or older and my heart, 00:55:01.94\00:55:04.06 you know, I've been studying this I've been going over this 00:55:04.09\00:55:06.42 and I'm saying, "oh, Jesus, please, I don't know. 00:55:06.45\00:55:10.09 I can't read the future all I'm telling you Jesus is 00:55:10.12\00:55:13.40 in the present I want to have that guts, 00:55:13.43\00:55:16.25 I want to have the courage to stand 00:55:16.28\00:55:19.14 even if I have to stand alone, 00:55:19.17\00:55:21.15 I want to stand for the Holy Scriptures 00:55:21.18\00:55:25.11 and the Holy Scriptures only." 00:55:25.14\00:55:28.16 If you're 30 or older and you want to make that 00:55:28.19\00:55:29.58 same stance you stand to your feet as well please. 00:55:29.61\00:55:33.18 God bless you, and why not, why not, why not?
