00:29:27.92\00:29:29.64 Or how can you say to your brother, 00:29:29.67\00:29:31.15 'Let me remove the speck, that sawdust from your eye' 00:29:31.18\00:29:33.50 and, look, you got the board jammed in your own eye?" 00:29:33.53\00:29:35.85 Verse 5, "Hypocrite! 00:29:35.88\00:29:38.98 First remove the plank from your own eye, 00:29:39.01\00:29:41.95 and then you will see clearly to remove the speck 00:29:41.98\00:29:44.88 from your brother's eye." 00:29:44.91\00:29:46.84 Because, ladies and gentlemen, 00:29:46.87\00:29:48.50 this is the stunning law of human nature, 00:29:48.53\00:29:52.56 that little speck of sawdust 00:29:52.59\00:29:56.14 in his or her life is nothing in comparison 00:29:56.17\00:30:00.89 to the huge board you have jammed into yours. 00:30:00.92\00:30:06.17 You see, it's a law of human nature. 00:30:06.20\00:30:09.70 Invariably it is true 00:30:09.73\00:30:12.47 when what you criticize in others 00:30:12.50\00:30:15.79 is invariably true about you. 00:30:15.82\00:30:18.19 And by the way our whole nations 00:30:18.22\00:30:20.33 saw this potent law of human nature, 00:30:20.36\00:30:23.03 our whole nations saw this come true 00:30:23.06\00:30:24.57 just a few weeks ago, you remember the story. 00:30:24.60\00:30:27.24 One of the bright and shining stars 00:30:27.27\00:30:29.97 of evangelical America, 00:30:30.00\00:30:33.23 a pastor of 13,000 member church 00:30:33.26\00:30:36.21 that he had raised up from scratch, 00:30:36.24\00:30:39.31 president of the National Evangelical Association 00:30:39.34\00:30:43.28 visited frequent to the White House, 00:30:43.31\00:30:45.85 a women preacher against homo-sexuality 00:30:45.88\00:30:48.26 and sexual immorality. 00:30:48.29\00:30:49.66 Just a few weeks ago 00:30:49.69\00:30:50.82 was outed by a homosexual prostitute 00:30:50.85\00:30:53.84 that the pastor had frequented for the past two years. 00:30:53.87\00:30:57.15 Beware follower of Christ, beware. 00:31:00.25\00:31:04.49 Watch you criticize in others is invariably true about you. 00:31:04.52\00:31:10.48 "Judge not, that you be not judged. 00:31:13.03\00:31:16.53 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged, 00:31:16.56\00:31:19.75 and with the measure you use, 00:31:19.78\00:31:21.30 it will be measured back to you." 00:31:21.33\00:31:23.92 The pastor was defrocked, banished from his pulpit. 00:31:23.95\00:31:29.58 The measure he had used against other sinners 00:31:29.61\00:31:32.19 was now used against him and now is a sinner exposed 00:31:32.22\00:31:37.41 he is seeking healing. 00:31:37.44\00:31:38.54 And I need to say, I am praying to God 00:31:38.57\00:31:41.25 because I pray for him by name. 00:31:41.28\00:31:43.13 I am praying to God that he and his dear little family 00:31:43.16\00:31:46.94 will find the healing they are seeking 00:31:46.97\00:31:49.36 because you know why, 00:31:49.39\00:31:50.45 there but for the grace of God, go I. 00:31:50.48\00:31:54.95 Judge not, don't you judge 00:31:54.98\00:31:59.06 that you be not judged. 00:31:59.09\00:32:03.58 For what you criticize in others is invariably true about you. 00:32:03.61\00:32:07.75 And by the way, not only does Jesus drive 00:32:07.78\00:32:09.86 the point home very graphically but so does Paul the apostle. 00:32:09.89\00:32:14.54 Now jot this down in your study guide, 00:32:14.57\00:32:15.75 we'll put it on the screen, Romans 2:1. 00:32:15.78\00:32:18.57 This is something, isn't it? 00:32:18.60\00:32:19.88 Paul writing, "You, therefore, have no excuse, 00:32:19.91\00:32:22.83 you who pass judgment on someone else, 00:32:22.86\00:32:25.13 for at whatever point you judge the another, 00:32:25.16\00:32:27.76 you are condemning yourself, 00:32:27.79\00:32:29.17 because you who pass judgment do the same things." 00:32:29.20\00:32:34.28 Write it in the word same. 00:32:34.31\00:32:36.74 Judge not, that you be not judged. 00:32:36.77\00:32:41.37 Some years ago I came across 00:32:41.40\00:32:44.62 these words of Oswald Chambers 00:32:44.65\00:32:46.24 and they have just stuck in my heart 00:32:46.27\00:32:49.96 and I had to share them with you. 00:32:49.99\00:32:51.19 You got in there in your study guide. 00:32:51.22\00:32:53.05 You have to fill it in. 00:32:53.08\00:32:54.36 In his classic book, My Utmost for His Highest, 00:32:54.39\00:32:56.75 Chamber is writing now, 00:32:56.78\00:32:57.87 "Every wrong thing that I see in you, God locates in me. 00:32:57.90\00:33:03.36 Every time I judge, I condemn myself," 00:33:03.39\00:33:06.56 write it in, "I condemn myself." 00:33:06.59\00:33:10.45 Remember the kids, remember when we were the kids, 00:33:10.48\00:33:13.27 did your generation do this too, 00:33:13.30\00:33:14.88 when you point at somebody and say, "you," 00:33:14.91\00:33:16.78 and they all laughed, ha-ha-ha. 00:33:16.81\00:33:18.37 Two fingers pointing my way, three fingers pointing back. 00:33:18.40\00:33:20.52 You remember that? It's true. 00:33:20.55\00:33:23.77 Every time I judge you, I condemn myself, 00:33:23.80\00:33:25.68 three fingers are pointing back. 00:33:25.71\00:33:27.21 I've never met a man, no, no, no, 00:33:30.36\00:33:33.07 let me back track here, 00:33:33.10\00:33:34.56 "Every time I judge, I condemn myself. 00:33:34.59\00:33:35.80 Stop having a measuring rod for other people," 00:33:35.83\00:33:38.54 then I put the emphasis here. 00:33:38.57\00:33:40.14 "There is always one fact more in every man's case 00:33:40.17\00:33:45.12 about which we know nothing." 00:33:45.15\00:33:46.59 You know, we are so hard on each other. 00:33:46.62\00:33:48.37 Do you understand you and I do not know 00:33:48.40\00:33:50.34 everything about that human being? 00:33:50.37\00:33:51.96 You know no, you have no knowledge about his wife. 00:33:51.99\00:33:54.48 You know nothing about her husband, 00:33:54.51\00:33:55.73 you know nothing about the children, 00:33:55.76\00:33:57.02 you know nothing about the home she grew up in. 00:33:57.05\00:33:58.92 You know nothing about the fact 00:33:58.95\00:34:00.05 she's fighting a disease for her life. 00:34:00.08\00:34:01.84 You know nothing about the pressures he bears, 00:34:01.87\00:34:03.76 you know nothing. 00:34:03.79\00:34:05.26 There's one fact, always one fact left 00:34:05.29\00:34:07.76 you know nothing of and yet you and I shred, 00:34:07.79\00:34:13.20 shred in our self-righteous 00:34:13.23\00:34:18.58 hearted spirit we shred. 00:34:18.61\00:34:21.24 You don't know. 00:34:21.27\00:34:23.14 The only one who knows everything is God 00:34:23.17\00:34:24.52 and that's' why he's the only one 00:34:24.55\00:34:25.58 who can judge, only one. 00:34:25.61\00:34:28.39 Chambers goes on, "I have never met the man 00:34:28.42\00:34:29.95 I could despair of after discerning what lies in me 00:34:29.98\00:34:32.27 apart from the grace of God. 00:34:32.30\00:34:33.53 If you have been shrewd 00:34:33.56\00:34:34.71 in finding out the defects in others, 00:34:34.74\00:34:36.22 remember that will be exactly the measure given to you. 00:34:36.25\00:34:39.08 Life serves back in the coin you pay." 00:34:39.11\00:34:42.12 What you give is what you get. 00:34:42.15\00:34:46.49 Wow. 00:34:46.52\00:34:47.55 Judge not, judge not that you be not judged. 00:34:47.58\00:34:51.30 Hey, come on, I am just going to talk 00:34:51.33\00:34:52.39 little heart to heart now. 00:34:52.42\00:34:54.45 You suppose that's' why we have such a hard time, 00:34:54.48\00:35:00.72 spending time with critical people? 00:35:00.75\00:35:04.67 I am gonna be honest with you. 00:35:04.70\00:35:06.05 I don't like being around here for long. 00:35:06.08\00:35:07.61 I can handle it for a bit but not for long. 00:35:07.64\00:35:11.07 Have you notice there's something grating 00:35:11.10\00:35:12.38 about their spirit on your words. 00:35:12.41\00:35:16.68 That critical spirit, those little innuendos, 00:35:16.71\00:35:19.62 the judgmental twist they put on leader's mistake, 00:35:19.65\00:35:22.35 they are sly but sugary sweet way of injecting 00:35:22.38\00:35:24.68 their pharisaical judgment into the conversation. 00:35:24.71\00:35:27.40 I tell you what, let me just-- I'll lead this with you too. 00:35:27.43\00:35:31.64 These aren't in the study guide. 00:35:31.67\00:35:32.94 But the moment, the next time you are with somebody 00:35:32.97\00:35:34.92 and that somebody begins to criticize someone 00:35:34.95\00:35:37.96 and by the way always that someone is not present, 00:35:37.99\00:35:40.74 you'll notice, all right. 00:35:40.77\00:35:41.82 The next time that begins to happen, 00:35:41.85\00:35:43.30 there are two realities you can know 00:35:43.33\00:35:44.72 about the person doing the criticizing, 00:35:44.75\00:35:46.61 I want you to never forget these 00:35:46.64\00:35:47.81 because it exposes the raw truth of our human nature. 00:35:47.84\00:35:50.70 Remember these two, reality number one, 00:35:50.73\00:35:52.69 as Jesus and Paul and Chambers 00:35:52.72\00:35:54.00 have just made clear to us this morning, 00:35:54.03\00:35:55.73 the individual is struggling. 00:35:55.76\00:35:57.53 The one doing the criticizing 00:35:57.56\00:35:58.72 is struggling with the very same weakness 00:35:58.75\00:36:00.62 he or she has identified in somebody else. 00:36:00.65\00:36:05.87 And by the way, truth and fairness in advertising. 00:36:05.90\00:36:12.21 The reason I know that this is the law of human nature 00:36:12.24\00:36:15.27 is because of my own critical spirit. 00:36:15.30\00:36:19.62 I worked very hard at trying not to ever talk 00:36:19.65\00:36:23.47 in a critical way about another person not present. 00:36:23.50\00:36:27.53 And I think if you talk to my staff 00:36:27.56\00:36:28.84 and you talk to my family you would find 00:36:28.87\00:36:30.65 that I at least make an effort. 00:36:30.68\00:36:33.68 I am so ashamed of the times 00:36:33.71\00:36:37.11 I've broken my own rule. 00:36:37.14\00:36:40.60 And I want you to stop me if you ever hear me 00:36:40.63\00:36:42.78 talking about somebody who is not there, 00:36:42.81\00:36:45.18 why we're talking about him or her. 00:36:45.21\00:36:47.06 Now in a positive way talk to you, blew in the face, 00:36:47.09\00:36:49.21 I don't mind it, but if I start critiquing, judging, 00:36:49.24\00:36:52.72 you stop me, all right. 00:36:52.75\00:36:54.80 But-- so I try not to do it out loud. 00:36:54.83\00:36:57.25 But I can be very critical of another person 00:36:57.28\00:37:00.93 right here in my mind. 00:37:00.96\00:37:04.65 And I've learned, I've just shredded people here. 00:37:04.68\00:37:09.16 And I learned over the years 00:37:09.19\00:37:10.95 that the reason I am able to spot another man's weakness 00:37:10.98\00:37:13.23 so quickly is because I have that same weakness 00:37:13.26\00:37:16.28 and I've developed a proclivity towards it and I see it. 00:37:16.31\00:37:19.00 It's like when you drive a Ford Taurus, 00:37:19.03\00:37:20.77 they are everywhere. 00:37:20.80\00:37:21.84 So the next time, 00:37:27.58\00:37:28.89 now I'm giving you a little bit of council, 00:37:28.92\00:37:30.45 it's not in the study guide. 00:37:30.48\00:37:31.70 But the next time you hear somebody criticizing 00:37:31.73\00:37:34.95 another person who of course is not present 00:37:34.98\00:37:36.78 you can know immediately that he or she is struggling 00:37:36.81\00:37:39.85 with that same weakness, 00:37:39.88\00:37:41.14 that same sin, that same failure. 00:37:41.17\00:37:44.65 I tell you what, 00:37:44.68\00:37:45.71 if those of us who enjoy criticizing people in public 00:37:45.74\00:37:48.16 would realize what we're actually saying about ourselves, 00:37:48.19\00:37:51.05 we would keep our mouth shut. 00:37:51.08\00:37:53.58 And this would be a whole lot happier place to live in. 00:37:53.61\00:37:57.21 Judge not as you be not judged. 00:38:00.76\00:38:05.80 But I promised two, there are two realities 00:38:05.83\00:38:07.90 that you can know about a criticizer. 00:38:07.93\00:38:10.27 Reality number one, he reveals his own weakness to you 00:38:10.30\00:38:13.88 and reality number two, you can not trust 00:38:13.91\00:38:16.14 your own confidential information with him 00:38:16.17\00:38:20.95 which is why Judas 00:38:20.98\00:38:23.37 was not a part of Jesus' inner circle. 00:38:23.40\00:38:26.78 He wanted to be, 00:38:26.81\00:38:28.74 because a judgmental spirit can turn on you in an incident. 00:38:28.77\00:38:31.29 Jesus can not afford to share 00:38:31.32\00:38:32.60 His deepest confidences with Judas. 00:38:32.63\00:38:35.57 I mean, because if he's talking about 00:38:35.60\00:38:36.84 so and so in my presence, 00:38:36.87\00:38:38.12 what do you suppose he's saying about me 00:38:38.15\00:38:39.74 in someone else's presence. 00:38:39.77\00:38:42.28 I tell you what, never, sometimes you feels little good 00:38:42.31\00:38:44.89 to somebody's come to you to tell some. 00:38:44.92\00:38:46.39 Never flatter yourself that a critic takes you 00:38:46.42\00:38:48.96 into her confidence about someone else 00:38:48.99\00:38:51.02 because she is doing the very same thing to you 00:38:51.05\00:38:53.65 behind your back, trust me, trust Jesus. 00:38:53.68\00:38:57.93 That's why ladies and gentlemen, 00:38:57.96\00:39:00.22 critics had many informants but few friends. 00:39:00.25\00:39:05.17 You think about that for a moment. 00:39:09.02\00:39:11.69 A century ago, these penetrating words were written, 00:39:15.10\00:39:18.46 that's why I want you to have the study guide. 00:39:18.49\00:39:20.00 Look at this, you have to fill it in. 00:39:20.03\00:39:22.21 "The atmosphere of selfishness and narrow criticism 00:39:22.24\00:39:24.72 stifles the noble and generous emotions, 00:39:24.75\00:39:27.45 and causes men and women to become 00:39:27.48\00:39:28.91 self-centered judges and petty spies." 00:39:28.94\00:39:32.44 Picky, picky, picky, picky, picky, picky. 00:39:32.47\00:39:36.21 Why? 00:39:36.24\00:39:37.67 Because I just thrive on this. 00:39:37.70\00:39:41.03 By the way, the reason I am so hard on you 00:39:41.06\00:39:43.76 is because I am trying to cover up me. 00:39:43.79\00:39:46.58 If I weren't worry about me, I would be-- 00:39:46.61\00:39:48.37 I won't give two plain nickels for your problem, 00:39:48.40\00:39:52.77 that's because I have the same problem 00:39:52.80\00:39:55.20 that I deflect the attention, just deflect it. 00:39:55.23\00:40:00.14 Next sentence, "The sin that leads to the most--" 00:40:00.17\00:40:02.93 by the way, not the next and the most, not the third, 00:40:02.96\00:40:04.76 not the fourth from the most, 00:40:04.79\00:40:06.12 "The sin that leads to the most unhappy results 00:40:06.15\00:40:09.52 is the cold, critical, unforgiving spirit 00:40:09.55\00:40:12.70 that characterizes Pharisaism. 00:40:12.73\00:40:14.59 He, she who is guilty of wrong is the first to suspect wrong. 00:40:14.62\00:40:19.18 By condemning another 00:40:19.21\00:40:20.53 he is trying to conceal or excuse 00:40:20.56\00:40:22.95 the evil of his own heart. 00:40:22.98\00:40:24.46 According to the figure that our Savior uses," 00:40:24.49\00:40:26.55 according to the board and the sawdust. 00:40:26.58\00:40:33.44 "He who indulges a censorious 00:40:33.47\00:40:35.41 or critical spirit is guilty of--" 00:40:35.44\00:40:37.67 is blows you out of the water 00:40:37.70\00:40:38.73 but write it down, "is guilty of greater, 00:40:38.76\00:40:41.62 greater sin than is the one he accuses, 00:40:41.65\00:40:44.90 for he not only commits the same sin, 00:40:44.93\00:40:47.06 but adds to it conceit and censoriousness" 00:40:47.09\00:40:49.43 which is an old word for the spirit of criticism. 00:40:49.46\00:40:51.55 He sits on the seat of a judge and that's a double sin 00:40:51.58\00:40:54.83 because there's only one judge 00:40:54.86\00:40:56.01 and when you play God you're lost 00:40:56.04\00:40:59.20 because the only one that can save you is you. 00:40:59.23\00:41:02.32 Not God mad at you, you play God, save yourself 00:41:02.35\00:41:05.57 and you can't, that's' why you are lost. 00:41:05.60\00:41:08.47 It's a sin, it is a sin. Oh mercy. 00:41:08.50\00:41:14.26 Is there any mercy 00:41:14.29\00:41:15.61 for the judgmental likes of you and me? 00:41:15.64\00:41:18.94 Hallelujah. The critic gets it. 00:45:42.78\00:45:45.78 He says, I guess, 00:45:45.81\00:45:48.54 I guess that kind of make sense, doesn't it. 00:45:48.57\00:45:51.20 Jesus is giving us permission to never, never 00:45:51.23\00:45:56.22 criticize someone, our enemy even. 00:45:56.25\00:46:00.29 Which by the way is why Jesus who had every right in the Book 00:46:00.32\00:46:04.02 to cast invictus on this sorry wretch of a betrayer name Judas. 00:46:04.05\00:46:08.99 When Judas comes to Jesus that early Friday morning, 00:46:09.02\00:46:12.18 when Judas shows up, Jesus looks into the face 00:46:12.21\00:46:14.99 of the man who has betrayed him behind his back 00:46:15.02\00:46:17.72 and Jesus says, friend. 00:46:17.75\00:46:20.91 He calls his enemy friend. You know why? 00:46:20.94\00:46:24.50 Because Jesus lives-- 00:46:24.53\00:46:26.22 the divine carpenter lives by His own rule. 00:46:26.25\00:46:30.03 He lives by His own ruler. 00:46:30.06\00:46:31.78 If the tables were turned 00:46:31.81\00:46:33.10 I want you to do the same thing to me, 00:46:33.13\00:46:35.40 keep calling me your friend. 00:46:35.43\00:46:39.63 So when you have been betrayed 00:46:39.66\00:46:41.01 behind your back by somebody's tongue 00:46:41.04\00:46:45.29 still call her, still call him friend. 00:46:45.32\00:46:49.36 Jesus, with his torturous executioners, 00:46:49.39\00:46:54.27 look how He treats them. 00:46:54.30\00:46:56.38 I mean this is the judge of all the universe 00:46:56.41\00:46:59.52 and they've taken the divine carpenter, 00:46:59.55\00:47:00.81 they have His arms stretched out 00:47:00.84\00:47:02.34 upon the very wood He himself crafted 00:47:02.37\00:47:05.55 and as they are nailing His palms to the core, 00:47:05.58\00:47:09.72 the mighty core of that cross. 00:47:09.75\00:47:11.37 What is Jesus do? What is Jesus do? 00:47:11.40\00:47:15.87 He says, hey, father, father, father, please I beg of you, 00:47:15.90\00:47:21.61 forgive them, they don't know what they are doing. 00:47:21.64\00:47:25.64 And when he prayed mercy came running 00:47:25.67\00:47:29.88 at that instant for His executioners. 00:47:29.91\00:47:35.54 Jesus lived, He practiced what he preached. 00:47:35.57\00:47:38.06 And by the way you just saw in Jesus 00:47:42.40\00:47:46.72 what is probably the shortest and simplest antidote 00:47:46.75\00:47:49.79 to the spirit of criticism anywhere on earth today. 00:47:49.82\00:47:52.24 When you attempt to the criticize somebody 00:47:52.27\00:47:53.87 and they are not present, 00:47:53.90\00:47:54.93 the moment that temptation comes into your mind, 00:47:54.96\00:47:56.78 instead of criticizing 00:47:56.81\00:47:58.20 you immediately pray for that person. 00:47:58.23\00:48:00.19 Would you write it down please? 00:48:00.22\00:48:01.32 Intercede instead of criticize, pray instead of judge. 00:48:01.35\00:48:06.54 What would happen if we pray for everybody 00:48:06.57\00:48:09.23 we used to criticize? 00:48:09.26\00:48:11.45 What would happen on this campus 00:48:11.48\00:48:15.63 if we pray for each other instead? 00:48:15.66\00:48:19.53 Pray instead of judge, intercede instead of criticize. 00:48:19.56\00:48:23.31 And by the way, in pleading for mercy for her, 00:48:23.34\00:48:26.68 whoever she is you are praying for mercy for yourself. 00:48:26.71\00:48:29.93 When you pray for mercy for that man 00:48:29.96\00:48:33.25 you are pleading for mercy for yourself. 00:48:33.28\00:48:35.13 And the good news is when you do that, 00:48:35.16\00:48:36.92 mercy comes running to both of you at the same time. 00:48:36.95\00:48:40.85 You win, you win with mercy. You'll always win with mercy. 00:48:40.88\00:48:46.50 Treat others the way you wanted them to treat you. 00:48:46.53\00:48:50.89 And then Hallelujah, like the Amish 00:48:50.92\00:48:53.12 this too will become a community, 00:48:53.15\00:48:54.62 a world starve for mercy will come seeking. 00:48:54.65\00:48:58.06 I want to end with a story of the Amish 00:48:58.09\00:48:59.72 but before I do there's one more quotation 00:48:59.75\00:49:02.01 that you need you, that end your study guide, 00:49:02.04\00:49:04.35 you need to fill in. 00:49:04.38\00:49:05.80 same book, hundred years ago, 00:49:05.83\00:49:07.96 "Search heaven and earth," this is dynamite. 00:49:07.99\00:49:11.58 "Search heaven and earth, and there is no truth revealed 00:49:11.61\00:49:15.31 more powerful than that which is made manifest 00:49:15.34\00:49:17.68 in works of mercy," 00:49:17.71\00:49:19.73 prayers of mercy, works of mercy. 00:49:19.76\00:49:22.94 There's no greater truth in this, 00:49:22.97\00:49:24.66 in heaven and earth no more powerful truth than mercy. 00:49:24.69\00:49:27.54 This is the truth as it is in Jesus. 00:49:27.57\00:49:29.82 Now listen to this, "When those who profess the name of Christ," 00:49:29.85\00:49:32.58 like you and me, 00:49:32.61\00:49:33.64 "shall practice the principles of the golden rule," 00:49:33.67\00:49:36.37 hold on to your pew, 00:49:36.40\00:49:37.70 "the same power will attend the gospel" 00:49:37.73\00:49:40.64 today "as in apostolic times." Hallelujah. 00:49:40.67\00:49:45.01 Do you understand what that means? 00:49:45.04\00:49:46.41 A lot of you getting little worried 00:49:46.44\00:49:48.48 about the revival of the Holy Spirit 00:49:48.51\00:49:49.88 and oh boy, we need revival, we need revival. 00:49:49.91\00:49:51.62 You want to have revival like the early church had it, 00:49:51.65\00:49:53.94 you practice the golden rule. 00:49:53.97\00:49:55.32 When you practice the golden rule, 00:49:55.35\00:49:57.00 that brings the revival 00:49:57.03\00:49:58.75 because it's the spirit of Jesus. 00:49:58.78\00:50:00.84 What's a hot pouring of the Holy Spirit 00:50:00.87\00:50:02.24 if it's not the Spirit of Jesus? 00:50:02.27\00:50:03.44 Its Jesus made fresh through you and me. 00:50:03.47\00:50:06.91 And the power of the Book of Acts 00:50:06.94\00:50:09.40 will be the power of the village of Berrien Springs. 00:50:09.43\00:50:12.98 Thank you, Jesus. 00:50:13.01\00:50:15.94 I want to end with a story, 00:50:15.97\00:50:18.36 appeared in the latest Willow magazine. 00:50:18.39\00:50:20.83 It's about that tragic morning last fall, 00:50:20.86\00:50:22.61 the whole nation knew this one. 00:50:22.64\00:50:25.81 A little Amish school in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. 00:50:25.84\00:50:31.05 Remember that gunman entered, 00:50:31.08\00:50:32.79 barricaded that little school house 00:50:32.82\00:50:36.04 and when the carnage was over 00:50:36.07\00:50:37.40 seven of the students were wounded, 00:50:37.43\00:50:38.94 three little girls were dead and the gunman had died, 00:50:38.97\00:50:41.65 died at his own hands. 00:50:41.68\00:50:44.16 The nation in shock watch the unfolding 00:50:44.19\00:50:49.22 for the drama was not through. 00:50:49.25\00:50:51.59 The religious news service came to this celebrated 00:50:51.62\00:50:55.01 Mennonite philosopher and author. 00:50:55.04\00:50:59.32 One of his books, The Upside Down Kingdom, 00:50:59.35\00:51:01.33 I think is one of the greatest books I've read. 00:51:01.36\00:51:04.43 The Mennonite author and philosopher 00:51:04.46\00:51:06.46 is Donald Kraybill and he wrote an essay 00:51:06.49\00:51:10.70 for the religious news service. 00:51:10.73\00:51:13.47 As it turn out it's on the back of this picture 00:51:13.50\00:51:15.66 so I hold the picture. 00:51:15.69\00:51:16.72 You look at the three Amish women, 00:51:16.75\00:51:18.06 looking at the place of that carnage. 00:51:18.09\00:51:20.61 And let me read this to you, you see the title don't you. 00:51:20.64\00:51:23.17 All about forgiveness. 00:51:23.20\00:51:25.69 "The blood was hardly dry on the bare, board floor 00:51:25.72\00:51:28.27 of the West Nickel Mines School when Amish parents said 00:51:28.30\00:51:32.18 words of forgiveness to the family of the man 00:51:32.21\00:51:35.21 who had killed their children." 00:51:35.24\00:51:38.27 Forgiveness? 00:51:38.30\00:51:40.00 So quickly and for such a heinous crime. 00:51:40.03\00:51:42.68 Why and how could the Amish do such a thing so quickly? 00:51:42.71\00:51:48.65 "Make no mistake, the pain of death is sharp, 00:51:48.68\00:51:52.25 searing the hearts of Amish mothers and fathers 00:51:52.28\00:51:54.58 like it would any other parents. 00:51:54.61\00:51:56.52 But why forgiveness? 00:51:56.55\00:51:57.59 Surely some anger, at least some grudge is justifiable 00:51:57.62\00:52:00.72 in the face of such a slaughter. 00:52:00.75\00:52:03.79 A frequent phrase in Amish life is 'forgive and forget.' 00:52:03.82\00:52:08.25 That's the recipe for responding to Amish members 00:52:08.28\00:52:10.88 who transgress Amish rules, if they confess their failures. 00:52:10.91\00:52:13.90 Amish forgiveness also reaches to outsiders, 00:52:13.93\00:52:17.04 even to killers of their children. 00:52:17.07\00:52:19.90 For you see, their model is the suffering Jesus, 00:52:19.93\00:52:23.46 who carried his cross without complaint, 00:52:23.49\00:52:26.08 and who, hanging on the cross, " 00:52:26.11\00:52:27.66 extended forgiveness to his tormentors. 00:52:27.69\00:52:31.12 Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. 00:52:31.15\00:52:35.87 Beyond his example, the Amish try to practice 00:52:35.90\00:52:38.84 Jesus' admonitions to turn the other cheek, 00:52:38.87\00:52:41.24 to love one's enemies, to forgive 70 times 7, 00:52:41.27\00:52:44.22 and to leave vengeance to the Lord. 00:52:44.25\00:52:45.80 Retaliation and revenge 00:52:45.83\00:52:47.43 are not part of their vocabulary. 00:52:47.46\00:52:50.60 As pragmatic as they are about other things, 00:52:50.63\00:52:53.51 the Amish do not ask if forgiveness works 00:52:53.54\00:52:56.96 they simply seek to practice it 00:52:56.99\00:52:59.29 as the Jesus way of responding 00:52:59.32\00:53:02.03 to adversaries, even enemies. 00:53:02.06\00:53:05.78 Final lines, "Such courage to forgive has jolted 00:53:05.81\00:53:10.04 the watching world as much as the killing itself. 00:53:10.07\00:53:13.21 The transforming power of forgiveness 00:53:13.24\00:53:15.86 may be one redeeming thing that flows from the blood 00:53:15.89\00:53:19.82 that was shed in Nickel Mines. 00:53:19.85\00:53:25.64 If they can love like Jesus with mercy and forgiveness, 00:53:25.67\00:53:32.34 I ask you in the name of Christ, 00:53:32.37\00:53:35.53 can we not do the same? 00:53:35.56\00:53:41.17 Be like Jesus, I would be like Jesus. 00:53:41.20\00:53:46.74 It seems the right prayer to pray. 00:53:46.77\00:53:49.60 And so I am gonna ask you to grab that hymn note 00:53:49.63\00:53:51.40 that's' in front of you and turn to hymn 492. 00:53:51.43\00:53:56.13 Just the first and the last stanzas. 00:53:56.16\00:53:58.54 Pray it with me will you? 00:53:58.57\00:53:59.81 Pray that chorus especially when you get to the chorus, 00:53:59.84\00:54:03.91 I would be like Jesus. 00:54:03.94\00:54:08.16 Teach, me, Father, what to say 00:54:37.29\00:54:43.52 Teach me, Father, how to pray 00:54:43.55\00:54:50.68 Teach me all along the way 00:54:50.71\00:54:58.07 How to be like Jesus 00:54:58.10\00:55:05.91 I would be like Jesus 00:55:05.94\00:55:12.82 I would be like Jesus 00:55:12.85\00:55:19.99 Help me, Lord, 00:55:20.02\00:55:22.86 To daily grow 00:55:22.89\00:55:28.14 More and more 00:55:28.17\00:55:31.24 Like Jesus 00:55:31.27\00:55:38.14 Teach me how we may be one 00:55:38.17\00:55:44.53 Like the Father and the Son 00:55:44.56\00:55:51.85 And when all is overcome 00:55:51.88\00:55:59.36 I will be like Jesus 00:55:59.39\00:56:07.36 I would be like Jesus 00:56:07.39\00:56:14.78 I would be like Jesus 00:56:14.81\00:56:22.48 Help me, Lord, 00:56:22.51\00:56:25.70 To daily grow 00:56:25.73\00:56:30.97 More and more like Jesus 00:56:31.00\00:56:38.97 Oh Father, please, I beg of You. 00:56:43.18\00:56:48.90 Help me grow 00:56:54.21\00:56:58.31 more and more, 00:56:58.34\00:57:02.53 please, like Jesus. 00:57:02.56\00:57:08.14 Amen. 00:57:08.17\00:57:10.44 Before you go I wanted to take one more moment 00:57:10.47\00:57:12.32 to let you know, how glad I am 00:57:12.35\00:57:13.85 you share this hour worshiping Bible teachings with us. 00:57:13.88\00:57:17.22 Living in the world that we do now, 00:57:17.25\00:57:18.84 a civilization surviving on the edge` 00:57:18.87\00:57:20.60 of constant upheaval change 00:57:20.63\00:57:22.96 and pray for that we have 00:57:22.99\00:57:24.02 the bedrock hope of Jesus, aren't you?
