The melodious songs of the blessed 00:01:10.70\00:01:18.66 And our spirits 00:01:18.69\00:01:21.50 Shall sorrow no more 00:01:21.53\00:01:26.76 Not a sigh 00:01:26.79\00:01:29.29 For the blessing of rest 00:01:29.32\00:01:35.47 In the sweet 00:01:35.50\00:01:39.45 By and by 00:01:39.48\00:01:43.62 We shall meet 00:01:43.65\00:01:45.80 On that beautiful shore 00:01:45.83\00:01:51.91 In the sweet 00:01:51.94\00:01:55.97 By and by 00:01:56.00\00:02:01.61 We shall meet 00:02:01.64\00:02:04.24 On that beautiful shore 00:02:04.27\00:02:09.61 As the music keeps playing, 00:02:12.80\00:02:15.24 as we sing the rest of this song, 00:02:15.27\00:02:17.07 I invite those of you who'd like to come up to the front 00:02:17.10\00:02:21.11 and join us in our time of prayer. 00:02:21.14\00:02:23.39 To our bountiful Father above 00:02:41.15\00:02:49.13 We will offer 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.09 Our tribute of praise 00:02:52.12\00:02:57.52 For the glorious gift of His love 00:02:57.55\00:03:05.42 And the blessings 00:03:05.45\00:03:08.24 That hallow our days 00:03:08.27\00:03:13.56 In the sweet 00:03:13.59\00:03:17.57 By and by 00:03:17.60\00:03:21.51 We shall meet 00:03:21.54\00:03:23.91 On that beautiful shore 00:03:23.94\00:03:29.74 In the sweet 00:03:29.77\00:03:33.80 By and by 00:03:33.83\00:03:39.11 We shall meet 00:03:39.14\00:03:41.98 On that beautiful shore. 00:03:42.01\00:03:49.98 Till we see Him face to face, 00:03:52.46\00:03:56.40 let us keep praying even as we kneel now 00:03:56.43\00:03:59.41 and pray to our God. 00:03:59.44\00:04:01.07 Let us kneel together. 00:04:01.10\00:04:02.43 Oh, God, someday the sweet by and by, 00:04:20.11\00:04:23.42 but today with all creation wrapped in frigid white bath 00:04:23.45\00:04:28.25 in shining crystals, this Sabbath day. 00:04:28.28\00:04:32.22 We bow down before our Creator with grateful hearts, 00:04:32.25\00:04:36.27 hearts that too much of the time too timidly 00:04:36.30\00:04:39.89 declare our adoration and love for You 00:04:39.92\00:04:43.04 who have so extravagantly loved us first 00:04:43.07\00:04:46.74 and who died for us before we were ever us. 00:04:46.77\00:04:49.96 Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever. 00:04:49.99\00:04:55.95 Forgive us patient Savior, for allowing our faith 00:04:55.98\00:05:00.74 to be frozen bridled by the sophistication 00:05:00.77\00:05:04.23 and skepticism of our age, 00:05:04.26\00:05:06.58 thaw us with the glorious light that still streams from Calvary, 00:05:06.61\00:05:12.40 melt our stubborn pride, warm our cold affections 00:05:12.43\00:05:17.95 that we might yet learn to love one another 00:05:17.98\00:05:20.12 as You have loved us, 00:05:20.15\00:05:21.93 forgive us our trespasses 00:05:21.96\00:05:24.43 as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. 00:05:24.46\00:05:29.01 To, You Holy Father, we come as a people 00:05:29.04\00:05:31.78 on behalf of the nation that is our homeland. 00:05:31.81\00:05:35.27 It's true we are gathered in this sanctuary 00:05:35.30\00:05:37.53 as citizens from all the earth, 00:05:37.56\00:05:39.35 but it is also true that we have chosen 00:05:39.38\00:05:41.83 to make the United States our home 00:05:41.86\00:05:43.86 for this journey, for this time 00:05:43.89\00:05:47.17 and so today on the eve of this historic inauguration, 00:05:47.20\00:05:51.74 we are a united people 00:05:51.77\00:05:54.29 and celebrating the election 00:05:54.32\00:05:55.87 of a new young African-American President, 00:05:55.90\00:06:00.17 as Christian brothers and sisters, 00:06:00.20\00:06:02.58 we join with the nation in thanking, You oh, Lord, 00:06:02.61\00:06:05.03 for this glorious millstone on our long and painful road 00:06:05.06\00:06:09.88 to racial equality and justice for all. 00:06:09.91\00:06:13.54 We can only imagine what inspired flights of oratory, 00:06:13.57\00:06:17.20 Martin Luther King Junior 00:06:17.23\00:06:18.50 Would ascend were he alive today 00:06:18.53\00:06:21.35 to witness his dream nearing its fulfillment, 00:06:21.38\00:06:25.92 but we are not there yet, oh, God. 00:06:25.95\00:06:30.06 For as long as there is religious bigotry, 00:06:30.09\00:06:33.34 an ecclesiastical segregation and personal bias, 00:06:33.37\00:06:38.66 the love of Christ has yet to concur our collective hearts 00:06:38.69\00:06:42.86 and so may the election of our new president 00:06:42.89\00:06:44.79 become as it were an enabling precedent 00:06:44.82\00:06:47.97 for our own racial unity in Christ Jesus. 00:06:48.00\00:06:53.45 For our soon to be inaugurated President Barack Obama, 00:06:53.48\00:06:56.54 we pray two prayers. 00:06:56.57\00:06:58.93 First, we plea for him the gift of your righteous wisdom, 00:06:58.96\00:07:02.24 grant to him, oh God, 00:07:02.27\00:07:03.59 that in this time of dangerous opportunity we call crisis. 00:07:03.62\00:07:08.48 He might lead this nation in paths 00:07:08.51\00:07:10.92 that are right and just and good. 00:07:10.95\00:07:14.44 You have been a counselor to kings 00:07:14.47\00:07:16.31 and rulers throughout the centuries, 00:07:16.34\00:07:18.71 be one now for our president, too. 00:07:18.74\00:07:22.68 Secondly, we intercede our Father for His protection 00:07:22.71\00:07:26.89 and for the protection of his wife Michelle 00:07:26.92\00:07:29.15 and their daughters Malia and Sasha. 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.14 Dear God, be a protector from the lunacy of this age, 00:07:32.17\00:07:36.78 be their shield and buckler 00:07:36.81\00:07:38.66 so that they shall not be afraid for the terror by night 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.77 nor for the arrow that flieth by day 00:07:41.80\00:07:44.47 for You shall give Your angels charge over them 00:07:44.50\00:07:47.13 to keep them in all their ways. 00:07:47.16\00:07:50.43 We do not claim to know, oh God, 00:07:50.46\00:07:53.15 what lies before us as a nation, as a church, 00:07:53.18\00:07:56.58 as a people, but this much we do know, 00:07:56.61\00:08:00.28 Yea, though we walk through 00:08:00.31\00:08:01.80 the valley of the shadow of death, 00:08:01.83\00:08:04.22 we will fear no evil, for You're with us. 00:08:04.25\00:08:07.57 And for that alone, let alone a thousand reasons more, 00:08:07.60\00:08:11.36 we lift up our voices today in gratitude 00:08:11.39\00:08:13.85 and praise to the Christ to as our resurrection in our life. 00:08:13.88\00:08:18.25 We've not forgotten His promise 00:08:18.28\00:08:21.03 because I live, you shall live also. 00:08:21.06\00:08:24.84 And because He does, we can come 00:08:24.87\00:08:28.13 and we can go from your house this day 00:08:28.16\00:08:31.22 with your hope undiminished through Jesus Christ our Lord. 00:08:31.25\00:08:37.62 Amen. 00:08:37.65\00:08:39.56 Earlier this week, we took a video camera 00:08:54.86\00:08:57.89 to some different places around the campus 00:08:57.92\00:09:00.86 and asked students two questions. 00:09:00.89\00:09:03.27 The following are their responses. 00:09:03.30\00:09:05.85 A lot of happiness and joy, 00:09:13.12\00:09:16.20 a time where families and friends can be together 00:09:16.23\00:09:18.91 and be together for eternal life. 00:09:18.94\00:09:21.43 It means the end of pain and confusion. 00:09:21.46\00:09:25.39 I think it would be one of the events 00:09:25.42\00:09:27.38 that is going to have the most impact on all of us 00:09:27.41\00:09:30.13 'cause when Jesus comes back, 00:09:30.16\00:09:31.20 it's like the first thing happening. 00:09:31.23\00:09:33.15 So I imagine it as something you can't describe it. 00:09:33.18\00:09:36.95 It will be just be amazing, overwhelming 00:09:36.98\00:09:39.25 and seeing all these people, 00:09:39.28\00:09:40.66 you know, throughout history just resurrecting 00:09:40.69\00:09:42.96 will be so impressive. 00:09:42.99\00:09:45.13 Time to go home. 00:09:45.16\00:09:46.45 That's plainly simple, time to go home. 00:09:46.48\00:09:49.40 I think it's gonna be one of the coolest things 00:09:49.43\00:09:52.71 I'll ever see, of course. 00:09:52.74\00:09:54.29 I think it's gonna be like, 00:09:54.32\00:09:56.98 you see old beetles movies 00:09:57.01\00:09:58.55 where everyone's like screaming and crying 00:09:58.58\00:10:00.39 and jumping and they're so happy. 00:10:00.42\00:10:01.96 I think it's gonna be like ten times cooler than that. 00:10:01.99\00:10:04.34 And I can't wait to see like other Christians faces like-- 00:10:04.37\00:10:07.27 I don't know I just can't wait 00:10:07.30\00:10:08.73 to see the excitement and everything. 00:10:08.76\00:10:10.90 The beginning and the end, really, 00:10:10.93\00:10:12.52 I mean it's the end of everything bad, 00:10:12.55\00:10:14.09 the beginning of everything good. 00:10:14.12\00:10:16.19 The resurrection means 00:10:16.22\00:10:19.77 I guess getting a piece of my heart back 00:10:19.80\00:10:23.52 and I think for everyone, 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.63 you know, when you lose someone, you lose a part of your heart 00:10:25.66\00:10:28.21 and being able to see those people again, 00:10:28.24\00:10:31.55 I think that's gonna be the most amazing feeling. 00:10:31.58\00:10:35.35 Symbolizes, you know, the end of time 00:10:35.38\00:10:39.01 and pretty much, it's excitement to me 00:10:39.04\00:10:43.96 even though it may not look like 00:10:43.99\00:10:45.37 excitement on the camera but... 00:10:45.40\00:10:47.41 The time when we get to see Jesus for the first time 00:10:47.44\00:10:49.78 and go home to live with Him 00:10:49.81\00:10:51.06 in heaven forever and see our loved ones again. 00:10:51.09\00:10:54.34 I'm finally going home. 00:10:54.37\00:10:57.13 That's a long list of people so I guess I'll just say God. 00:11:03.21\00:11:06.96 Definitely I'm looking forward to see my mom's dad. 00:11:06.99\00:11:10.95 He died before I was born about six months, so... 00:11:10.98\00:11:15.02 Definitely my uncle, my mom's brother, 00:11:15.05\00:11:17.14 he died over a year-and-a-half ago 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.21 and we're really, really close to him 00:11:19.24\00:11:21.00 and it was very, very hard for me to see him go. 00:11:21.03\00:11:22.85 So I'm definitely looking forward to see him the most. 00:11:22.88\00:11:25.78 I'm looking forward to meeting Caleb 00:11:25.81\00:11:27.80 because that's my name. 00:11:27.83\00:11:30.63 All my family members who were not Christians before, 00:11:30.66\00:11:37.91 but by the grace of God they died believing, 00:11:37.94\00:11:41.36 they died as believers. 00:11:41.39\00:11:42.76 I'm looking forward to see them. 00:11:42.79\00:11:44.56 Well, my uncle's actually he was pretty big in my life 00:11:44.59\00:11:47.41 and he died pretty young when I was so young too 00:11:47.44\00:11:50.85 and I'd like to see him again. 00:11:50.88\00:11:52.77 If I would have to say Queen Esther 00:11:52.80\00:11:55.03 because since I was young, I'd always read her story 00:11:55.06\00:11:58.24 and I was really touched by it and I really admire her for, 00:11:58.27\00:12:01.96 you know, everything she did for her people 00:12:01.99\00:12:03.98 and being so brave. 00:12:04.01\00:12:05.56 I'm looking forward to seeing my sister Kristy 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.65 who died when she was four-and-a-half 00:12:07.68\00:12:09.10 and I was six, so I'm looking forward 00:12:09.13\00:12:10.73 to getting to know her 00:12:10.76\00:12:12.72 and be able to see her grow up in heaven. 00:12:12.75\00:12:18.67 So who are you looking forward to seeing? 00:12:18.70\00:12:22.38 Do you have somebody? 00:12:22.41\00:12:25.44 If I can be as personal as the people 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.13 on the screen right now, 00:12:27.16\00:12:31.14 I need to tell you about a man 00:12:31.17\00:12:37.56 that I loved with all my heart. 00:12:37.59\00:12:41.47 He was strong, he was wise, 00:12:44.50\00:12:51.73 he was good, he was very loving. 00:12:51.76\00:12:57.53 As far as I was concerned then 00:12:57.56\00:12:59.09 and as far as I'm concerned now, 00:12:59.12\00:13:00.78 he was a greatest dad who ever lived. 00:13:00.81\00:13:05.81 He died at the age of 75. 00:13:05.84\00:13:09.75 Too young. Too soon. 00:13:09.78\00:13:14.91 There was stuff I still needed to tell him. 00:13:14.94\00:13:19.41 There were things he still needed to teach me. 00:13:23.60\00:13:29.65 But here comes the really personal part now. 00:13:29.68\00:13:32.57 I'm gonna put his picture on the screen in a moment. 00:13:35.49\00:13:39.27 My dad was cremated. 00:13:39.30\00:13:42.42 The picture you're gonna see is at the memorial service 00:13:42.45\00:13:47.22 when with my mother and my brother 00:13:47.25\00:13:51.11 and my sister we wept. 00:13:51.14\00:13:53.42 We surrounded the picture by flowers 00:13:55.09\00:13:56.88 that's what the reason. 00:13:56.91\00:13:57.94 We put it on the screen for you now. 00:13:57.97\00:14:00.35 And as that picture goes up, 00:14:00.38\00:14:03.18 I need to ask you a question, you tell me. 00:14:03.21\00:14:06.93 Is my dad in heaven? 00:14:10.40\00:14:15.29 Is my dad in hell? 00:14:15.32\00:14:16.93 Is my dad in purgatory right now? 00:14:20.51\00:14:23.62 Nearly every Christian Church that I know teaches 00:14:26.90\00:14:29.34 that he right now is in one of those three places. 00:14:29.37\00:14:32.59 So where is my dad right now? 00:14:32.62\00:14:37.52 Once upon a long ago time, Jesus told us the answer 00:14:41.31\00:14:46.39 and for the life of me. 00:14:46.42\00:14:48.16 I can't figure out why we never got it. 00:14:48.19\00:14:50.57 Let's pray. Oh, God, we got to get it. 00:14:53.00\00:14:56.73 We must know the truth. 00:14:58.59\00:15:01.22 So listening to Jesus, 00:15:05.50\00:15:09.44 teach us we pray in His name. 00:15:09.47\00:15:12.83 Amen. 00:15:12.86\00:15:14.73 Open your Bible with me, please, 00:15:14.76\00:15:16.65 to that great story. The Gospel of Saint John. 00:15:16.68\00:15:19.49 Forgot your Bible? Should the day coming? 00:16:52.13\00:16:55.30 That tiny little medical examining room 00:16:55.33\00:16:57.67 when the doctor walks back in with his grave look on his face 00:16:57.70\00:17:00.84 and he announces to you, you have cancer. 00:17:00.87\00:17:04.83 Listen, it doesn't matter the name of the disease 00:17:04.86\00:17:06.44 or its severity. Forget the sick part. 00:17:15.94\00:17:18.25 Remember the love part. The one you love is sick. 00:17:18.28\00:17:25.02 Which means that if you're sick right now, 00:17:25.05\00:17:28.13 you maybe dying right now. 00:17:28.16\00:17:31.23 You need to know that you are just 00:17:31.26\00:17:33.82 as loved by Jesus as was Lazarus. 00:17:33.85\00:17:39.96 Verse 6, "So, when Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, 00:17:39.99\00:17:45.71 He stayed two more days in the place where He was." 00:17:45.74\00:17:49.80 And the disciples are flabbergasted. 00:17:49.83\00:17:51.75 I mean, our dear, Lord, and Master God bless him. 00:17:51.78\00:17:54.56 He is a strange fellow, isn't he? 00:17:54.59\00:17:56.97 I mean, here is His very dear friend Lazarus 00:17:57.00\00:17:59.38 definitely sick and Jesus hangs around for another two days. 00:17:59.41\00:18:02.01 What's up with that? 00:18:02.04\00:18:05.52 How hard it is for us mortals to learn the lesson 00:18:05.55\00:18:08.65 that the ways of God are not the ways of man or a woman? 00:18:08.68\00:18:14.81 How often you and I are utterly convinced 00:18:14.84\00:18:18.27 we know the best course of action for God 00:18:18.30\00:18:21.13 to take for our nation, for our families, 00:18:21.16\00:18:24.00 our friends, ourselves? 00:18:24.03\00:18:27.13 But to our great chagrin and sorrow, 00:18:27.16\00:18:28.59 he doesn't take that action. 00:18:28.62\00:18:29.67 We cry, why, why, why, why? Read it there. 00:18:47.08\00:18:49.45 "God never leads His children otherwise 00:18:49.48\00:18:53.87 than they would choose to be led, 00:18:53.90\00:18:55.46 if they could see the end from the beginning 00:18:55.49\00:18:58.25 and discern the glory of the purpose they are fulfilling." 00:18:58.28\00:19:02.76 Is that so? Is a another a word, lift your heart? 00:19:02.79\00:19:06.78 Look at this same book, 00:19:06.81\00:19:07.95 "To all who are reaching out 00:19:07.98\00:19:09.39 to feel the guiding hand of God." 00:19:09.42\00:19:11.13 Get this. 00:19:11.16\00:19:12.19 "The moment of greatest, greatest discouragement 00:19:12.22\00:19:16.23 is the time when divine help is nearest. 00:19:16.26\00:19:18.74 They will look back with thankfulness 00:19:18.77\00:19:20.95 upon the darkest part of their way." 00:19:20.98\00:19:24.72 And so it was, ladies and gentlemen, 00:19:24.75\00:19:27.36 the two long days dragged by 00:19:27.39\00:19:30.05 and then after the two days are over, 00:19:30.08\00:19:31.70 Jesus turns to His 12 friends and He says, 00:19:31.73\00:19:33.50 "Hey, guys, what you say if we go to Bethany?" 00:19:33.53\00:19:37.04 Please. Whom are you seeking? 00:29:25.61\00:29:29.73 'And She, supposing him to be the gardener, 00:29:29.76\00:29:31.35 said to him, oh Sir, if you have carried him away, 00:29:31.38\00:29:34.25 tell me where You have laid him, 00:29:34.28\00:29:35.55 and I will take him away 00:29:35.58\00:29:37.00 and Jesus said to her, 'Mary!'" 00:29:37.03\00:29:39.82 And just like, I tell you what 00:29:39.85\00:29:42.24 when you hear Jesus called you name one day, 00:29:42.27\00:29:44.45 you will recognize that voice 00:29:44.48\00:29:45.88 and it will be the way your name should be called 00:29:45.91\00:29:49.02 and when He said "Mary." 00:29:49.05\00:29:52.40 She hurls around and she turned to him 00:29:52.43\00:29:55.94 and she said, "Rabboni! Which is to say teacher." 00:29:55.97\00:29:58.53 And Jesus said oh, verse 17. 00:29:58.56\00:30:00.28 "Do not cling to me, 00:30:00.31\00:30:01.76 for I have not yet ascended to my Father. 00:30:01.79\00:30:07.41 But go to my brothers and say to them, 00:30:07.44\00:30:09.06 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, 00:30:09.09\00:30:10.79 and to my God and your God.'" 00:30:10.82\00:30:12.05 Would you jot that down, please? 00:30:12.08\00:30:13.46 Get it in your study guide. 00:30:13.49\00:30:14.52 Jesus tells Mary Sunday morning. 00:30:14.55\00:30:16.62 I have not yet ascended to my Father, 00:30:16.65\00:30:19.36 who by the way lives in paradise. 00:30:19.39\00:30:20.70 Paradise is the home of God. 00:30:20.73\00:30:22.27 I haven't been there yet. 00:30:22.30\00:30:23.52 Which means that either Jesus is lying to the thief 00:30:23.55\00:30:26.73 or He's lying to Mary? 00:30:26.76\00:30:28.47 To which one is He lying? 00:30:28.50\00:30:32.14 To which one is He lying? 00:30:32.17\00:30:34.15 Oh, that's an untenable position to put you and me 00:30:34.18\00:30:36.43 who love and adore and worship Jesus. 00:30:36.46\00:30:38.65 There has to be some sort of discrepancy here 00:30:38.68\00:30:41.40 to figure this one out and there is. 00:30:41.43\00:30:43.63 Let me give you a little lesson from history. 00:30:43.66\00:30:46.92 Jot it down when Luke wrote his Gospel, 00:30:46.95\00:30:48.76 there was no commas or word divisions. 00:30:48.79\00:30:52.85 In fact the comma wasn't introduced 00:30:52.88\00:30:53.91 scribble this in your margin, until 1490. 00:30:53.94\00:30:58.31 The original Greek manuscripts 00:30:58.34\00:31:00.44 had neither punctuation nor word divisions. 00:31:00.47\00:31:02.42 They were just one long line of letters. 00:31:02.45\00:31:04.85 So that if we could recreate an English sentence 00:31:04.88\00:31:06.92 to look like Luke's Greek, it would look like this. 00:31:06.95\00:31:09.58 We'll put it on the screen, that's it. 00:31:09.61\00:31:11.67 Now you're gonna have to sit there 00:31:11.70\00:31:12.97 and look at that for a while. 00:31:13.00\00:31:14.31 Figure out, are there divisions here? 00:31:14.34\00:31:16.00 Should there be any punctuation here? 00:31:16.03\00:31:17.95 That's the way it was-- That's the way Luke wrote. 00:31:17.98\00:31:21.55 Now once they introduced the comma, you can understand. 00:31:21.58\00:31:24.75 Translators would have to decide 00:31:24.78\00:31:26.37 where are we gonna put the comma? 00:31:26.40\00:31:28.80 Now here's the one way, we'll put it on the screen. 00:31:28.83\00:31:31.04 Assuredly I say to you, 00:31:31.07\00:31:33.63 today you will be with Me in paradise." 00:31:33.66\00:31:37.20 You could do it in another way. 00:31:37.23\00:31:38.26 Assuredly I say to you today, 00:31:38.29\00:31:40.40 you will be with me in paradise." 00:31:40.43\00:31:43.32 How? You see the placement of a single comma 00:31:43.35\00:31:45.71 makes all the difference in the world. 00:31:45.74\00:31:47.84 In fact, let's put another sentence up. 00:31:47.87\00:31:49.28 Women, without her, man is a beast! 00:31:49.31\00:31:54.08 Or Women, without her man, is a beast! 00:31:54.11\00:31:59.93 Come on, girls. 00:31:59.96\00:32:01.37 Where do we put that comma? 00:32:01.40\00:32:03.90 Because it's either telling the truth about you 00:32:03.93\00:32:05.72 or about your man. 00:32:05.75\00:32:08.23 The placement of a comma 00:32:08.26\00:32:09.51 makes all the difference in the world. 00:32:09.54\00:32:11.37 Do you get the point? Of course, you do. 00:32:11.40\00:32:14.13 Where do we put the comma? 00:32:14.16\00:32:17.76 Or where we're gonna put it in this sentence? 00:32:17.79\00:32:20.02 What we have to do is we have to take Jesus word for it. 00:32:20.05\00:32:22.76 Jesus said I have not yet ascended to my father. 00:32:22.79\00:32:25.88 Jesus said, Lazarus is asleep, he's dead. 00:32:25.91\00:32:28.48 Do you know what that means? 00:32:28.51\00:32:29.54 That means the Jesus and the thief 00:32:29.57\00:32:31.38 and Lazarus didn't go to heaven. 00:32:31.41\00:32:35.03 They didn't. They went to sleep. 00:32:35.06\00:32:37.54 In fact, would you jot this down, please? 00:32:37.57\00:32:39.48 Based on Jesus' statements 00:32:39.51\00:32:40.97 in John 11:11 and John 20:17. 00:32:41.00\00:32:43.63 The comma in Luke 23:43 must come after, after "today." 00:32:43.66\00:32:49.94 So how would it read? Put it on the screen. 00:32:49.97\00:32:52.09 "Assuredly, I say to you today, 00:32:52.12\00:32:55.55 you will be with me in paradise." 00:32:55.58\00:32:57.61 Well, hey pastor, then how did the Kings James translate? 00:32:57.64\00:33:00.89 It gets so fowled up that they put the comma 00:33:00.92\00:33:02.57 in the wrong place and every translation 00:33:02.60\00:33:04.68 following has copied the King James. 00:33:04.71\00:33:07.57 Oh, now the story and now, 00:33:07.60\00:33:10.56 by the way the crowning work 00:33:10.59\00:33:13.14 and my friends Samuele Bacchiocchi 00:33:13.17\00:33:15.91 who die at the Sabbath before Christmas. 00:33:15.94\00:33:19.17 I hold it right here on my hands. 00:33:19.20\00:33:22.09 Last conversation I had with Sam 00:33:22.12\00:33:23.78 just a few days before he died. 00:33:23.81\00:33:25.79 Sam was just-- By the way, a church history professor 00:33:25.82\00:33:28.92 and theologian here at Andrews University. 00:33:28.95\00:33:30.79 He's a writer. 00:33:30.82\00:33:33.53 I told Sam I was working on this series 00:33:33.56\00:33:36.06 "The Truth About Death" 00:33:36.09\00:33:37.12 and he had given me the book this summer. 00:33:37.15\00:33:38.94 I said, "Sam, I'm gonna be quoting from that book." 00:33:38.97\00:33:41.19 Because I tell you what. 00:33:41.22\00:33:44.91 This book, popular believes are they biblical. 00:33:44.94\00:33:47.24 His chapters on death contained 00:33:47.27\00:33:49.64 the most scholarly examination of the subject 00:33:49.67\00:33:52.06 I have ever read. 00:33:52.09\00:33:56.15 So how do we get into this mess? 00:33:56.18\00:33:57.98 Let me quote a few lines from Sam's book. 00:33:58.01\00:34:02.07 He tells a story about Socrates. 00:34:02.10\00:34:03.13 You remember who Socrates was? Where was Socrates from? 00:34:03.16\00:34:05.47 From Greece, all right. 00:34:05.50\00:34:07.56 So it tells a story about the philosophers Socrates 00:34:07.59\00:34:09.34 who went down to Egypt to study 00:34:09.37\00:34:12.15 the Egyptian teaching of the immortality, 00:34:12.18\00:34:13.93 pagan teaching the immortality of the soul. 00:34:13.96\00:34:16.76 He went back to Athens 00:34:16.79\00:34:19.07 and you remember the story of Socrates. 00:34:19.10\00:34:20.82 Eventually he was executed, 00:34:20.85\00:34:21.96 had to drink the cup of hemlock, you remember that? 00:34:21.99\00:34:24.46 Why? Because he was poisoning the Athens youth, 00:34:24.49\00:34:26.74 the young man leading them to reject gods 00:34:26.77\00:34:28.75 and turn toward atheism. 00:34:28.78\00:34:31.05 Plato his dear disciple 00:34:31.08\00:34:35.32 wrote up what Socrates taught. 00:34:35.35\00:34:37.48 Plato describes the last conversation 00:34:37.51\00:34:40.02 Socrates ever has alive 00:34:40.05\00:34:42.34 and he spends the day before drinking the hemlock, 00:34:42.37\00:34:44.71 discussing the nature of the human being, 00:34:44.74\00:34:47.62 the soul and death and immortality. 00:34:47.65\00:34:52.00 Now I'm gonna let Sam pick it up right there. 00:34:52.03\00:34:54.34 You have in your study guide. 00:34:54.37\00:34:55.84 He's describing that dialogue. 00:34:55.87\00:34:57.38 In the dialogue, on the day of his execution, 00:34:57.41\00:35:00.62 Socrates repeatedly declares death to be-- 00:35:00.65\00:35:03.35 Now these are words from Plato's according to Socrates. 00:35:03.38\00:35:05.83 "The death is the separation of the soul from the body 00:35:05.86\00:35:09.44 in which it is encased." 00:35:09.47\00:35:10.50 Socrates goes on. 00:35:10.53\00:35:11.56 "The soul whose inseparable attribute is life 00:35:11.59\00:35:14.79 will never admit to life's opposite, death. 00:35:14.82\00:35:18.09 Thus the soul is shown to be immortal, 00:35:18.12\00:35:21.02 and since immortal indestructible." 00:35:21.05\00:35:24.08 Socrates concluded death is merely 00:35:24.11\00:35:26.43 the separation of soul and body."' 00:35:26.46\00:35:29.70 And that, ladies and gentlemen, is where it all came from. 00:35:29.73\00:35:34.80 The pagan philosophers Socrates and Plato 00:35:34.83\00:35:37.48 introduced the concept of immortal soul 00:35:37.51\00:35:39.65 into Hellenistic philosophy 00:35:39.68\00:35:41.17 and then the concept was introduced 00:35:41.20\00:35:43.16 in the Hellenistic Judaism through the-- Just pardon me. 00:35:43.19\00:35:46.10 Through the philosopher, Philo Judaeus 00:35:46.13\00:35:48.21 and later injected into Christianity through Tertullian, 00:35:48.24\00:35:51.84 Origin, Augustine Thomas Aquinas. 00:35:51.87\00:35:55.92 But not once is the concept of immortal soul 00:35:55.95\00:36:00.12 taught in the Holy Scriptures of the Jews 00:36:00.15\00:36:02.25 or the New Testament of Christianity, not once. 00:36:02.28\00:36:05.83 In fact, you remember from last week, 00:36:05.86\00:36:07.95 the Fork-Tongued Beast. 00:36:07.98\00:36:10.18 And by the way, if you didn't get last week, 00:36:10.21\00:36:11.44 you need that piece to set this one up. 00:36:11.47\00:36:13.80 You can download the podcast from here. 00:36:13.83\00:36:15.91 You remember last week we noted that the words 00:36:15.94\00:36:17.74 soul and spirit are used over 1,700 times in the Bible 00:36:17.77\00:36:21.67 and not a single instance is the additive 00:36:21.70\00:36:25.27 immortal attached to either word. 00:36:25.30\00:36:29.21 In fact, it comes as surprise to some people. 00:36:29.24\00:36:31.58 But that teaching gets traced all the way back 00:36:34.75\00:36:39.50 to the garden and the fork-tongued serpent 00:36:39.53\00:36:42.50 who said, hey, you're not gonna die. 00:36:42.53\00:36:44.14 When you die? You're not really dying. 00:36:44.17\00:36:46.38 You just go on. 00:36:46.41\00:36:48.07 But what really surprises people, 00:36:50.57\00:36:52.15 is when they discover that the Bible actually 00:36:52.18\00:36:54.35 carefully teaches that the soul can die. 00:36:54.38\00:36:57.65 Hold on. Jot this down, will you? 00:36:57.68\00:36:58.80 Jot this down. 00:36:58.83\00:37:00.60 Nephesh, you see that in the study guide, Nephesh, 00:37:00.63\00:37:03.00 which is Hebrew for soul appears 754 times in the Old Testament 00:37:03.03\00:37:06.32 and is rendered in 45 different ways, 00:37:06.35\00:37:08.18 but not a single instance is it ever declared "immortal." 00:37:08.21\00:37:12.18 The Bible teaches if the soul dies-- Keep your pen moving. 00:37:12.21\00:37:15.23 Let's take a look at some of these. 00:37:15.26\00:37:16.41 There's a whole string of these Ezekiel 18:20, 00:37:16.44\00:37:19.21 "The soul Nephesh who sins shall die." 00:37:19.24\00:37:23.13 Does it what? It dies. The soul dies. 00:37:23.16\00:37:26.67 Here's is another one. Numbers 23:10. 00:37:26.70\00:37:28.65 This is a prayer. Let me-- Now the English says let me. 00:37:28.68\00:37:31.54 The Hebrew read let my soul, let "my soul" die 00:37:31.57\00:37:36.06 the death of the righteous and let my end be like his." 00:37:36.09\00:37:39.03 Here's another one, Numbers 35:30. 00:37:39.06\00:37:41.52 Whoever kills a person-- Now in English it's person, 00:37:41.55\00:37:44.32 but the Hebrews it's Nephesh. 00:37:44.35\00:37:45.46 Whoever kills a soul shall be put to death. 00:37:45.49\00:37:48.86 Reading Samuele Bacchiocchi too conclude. Jot it down. 00:37:48.89\00:37:51.43 "The fate of the soul is linked to fate of the body. 00:37:51.46\00:37:54.94 The destruction of the body is seen 00:37:54.97\00:37:57.76 as the destruction of the soul." 00:37:57.79\00:38:00.70 Ladies and gentlemen, apparently 00:38:00.73\00:38:03.02 Jesus knew what He was talking about, 00:38:03.05\00:38:05.29 when He taught that death is a sleep. 00:38:05.32\00:38:07.48 In fact, as the pre-incarnate Christ, 00:38:07.51\00:38:10.69 that's what He taught from Genesis 00:38:10.72\00:38:12.26 all the way through the Malachi. 00:38:12.29\00:38:13.92 Let me run some text by. 00:38:13.95\00:38:15.35 Lazarus is asleep, he said. 00:38:15.38\00:38:17.59 Lazarus is asleep. 00:38:17.62\00:38:20.17 Can you show that in the Old Testament? 00:38:20.20\00:38:23.32 Some scholars believe that the Book Job 00:38:23.35\00:38:25.50 is the oldest of the Old Testament books, 00:38:25.53\00:38:27.04 older predates Genesis, same author as Genesis. 00:38:27.07\00:38:30.61 But in Job 7:21, jot this down. 00:38:30.64\00:38:32.92 For now I shall sleep where? 00:38:32.95\00:38:35.69 I shall sleep where? In my bed, what does it say? 00:38:35.72\00:38:37.79 "I sleep in the dust and now I shall sleep in the dust 00:38:37.82\00:38:40.85 and thou shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be." 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.85 By the way, take a look at those verses 00:38:43.88\00:38:45.11 in parenthesis sometime later. 00:38:45.14\00:38:46.48 That's a stoning of Stephen, Acts 7:60. 00:38:46.51\00:38:48.56 He's being stone to death 00:38:48.59\00:38:49.76 and then it says in the New Testament 00:38:49.79\00:38:52.76 and he fell asleep. 00:38:52.79\00:38:53.82 I'm telling you, it's that way all the way through. 00:38:53.85\00:38:55.73 Here's another one just like Jesus taught it. 00:38:55.76\00:38:57.80 Here's another one, Deuteronomy 31:16, 00:38:57.83\00:39:00.26 "And the Lord said to Moses, 'Behold, you are about to sleep 00:39:00.29\00:39:03.46 with your fathers."' 00:39:03.49\00:39:05.76 2 Peter 3:4 says they slept with their fathers. 00:39:05.79\00:39:08.09 Death is a sleep. 00:39:08.12\00:39:09.15 All go to sleep. All who die go to sleep, 00:39:09.18\00:39:12.96 Jesus taught that. The Bible teaches it. 00:39:12.99\00:39:14.02 Here's another one. Ecclesiastics 9:5. 00:39:14.05\00:39:16.87 "For the living know that they will die, 00:39:16.90\00:39:19.81 but the dead know how much?" 00:39:19.84\00:39:21.59 Say it that loud to me. The dead know how much? 00:39:21.62\00:39:23.91 Zero, naught, nothing. The dead know nothing. 00:39:23.94\00:39:27.48 Talking about death as a sleep. 00:39:27.51\00:39:30.22 I mean, has it happened to you? 00:39:30.25\00:39:31.35 Has this-- Come on, be honest. 00:39:31.38\00:39:32.41 Has it ever happened to you? 00:39:32.44\00:39:33.47 You come home so weary and specked 00:39:33.50\00:39:38.34 that when you crawl on the bed 00:39:38.37\00:39:39.66 before your head even hits the pillow. 00:39:39.69\00:39:42.29 You ever had those times? Now we have this in English. 00:39:42.32\00:39:44.86 I don't know what it is in Portuguese. 00:39:44.89\00:39:46.42 I don't know what it is in Chinese. 00:39:46.45\00:39:48.32 We say it in English. You are dead to the world. 00:39:48.35\00:39:52.46 Do you have that in your language? 00:39:52.49\00:39:54.75 You're dead to the world. What's the mean? 00:39:54.78\00:39:56.61 Gone, the next thing you here is that-- Kill it. 00:39:56.64\00:40:03.55 The alarm clock going off.>> 00:40:03.58\00:40:06.37 No concept of the passage at times. 00:40:06.40\00:40:08.40 Nothing, I was dead to the world. 00:40:08.43\00:40:12.52 The dead know not a nothing, zero. 00:40:12.55\00:40:19.17 They're asleep that's why. 00:40:19.20\00:40:21.12 Because you see the Bible truth about death 00:40:21.15\00:40:23.55 is that when you die, you don't go to heaven, 00:40:23.58\00:40:26.22 you don't go to hell, you go sleep, you go to sleep. 00:40:26.25\00:40:31.44 That's what Jesus taught. 00:40:31.47\00:40:32.50 By the way, that's what Peter taught. 00:40:32.53\00:40:35.14 Oh, take a look at this. 00:40:35.17\00:40:36.20 This is Pentecost. This is the mighty Pentecost sermon. 00:40:36.23\00:40:37.58 Look at this. Acts 2:29 and 34. 00:40:37.61\00:40:40.76 If you asses 24, clause it out and put 34. 00:40:40.79\00:40:43.34 It supposed to say 34. Acts 2:29 and 34. 00:40:43.37\00:40:46.19 This is Peter preaching and he say, 00:40:46.22\00:40:47.58 "Hey, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, 00:40:47.61\00:40:51.20 that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us today. 00:40:51.23\00:40:55.86 For the David did not ascend, 00:40:55.89\00:40:59.07 woe he did not ascend into the heavens."' 00:40:59.10\00:41:02.20 Could it be clearer than that? 00:41:03.37\00:41:05.77 When you die, you don't go to heaven, you don't go to hell. 00:41:05.80\00:41:07.66 You go to sleep. You didn't go to heaven. 00:41:07.69\00:41:11.10 You have the authority of scripture. 00:41:11.13\00:41:13.01 Even the great King David sleeps in the grave 00:41:16.09\00:41:18.62 over and over the Bible truth is repeated death 00:41:18.65\00:41:20.96 you say sleep, but you know what? Come on. 00:41:20.99\00:41:22.68 Just put that down for a minute. 00:41:22.71\00:41:25.19 Think with me. 00:41:25.22\00:41:26.73 This has to be the most philosophical satisfying 00:41:26.76\00:41:30.34 and reassuring truth about death that their possibly can be. 00:41:30.37\00:41:35.02 If I were A God of love, I would do it this way. 00:41:35.05\00:41:40.65 I mean, you think about. 00:41:40.68\00:41:41.71 Just think what kind of a God 00:41:41.74\00:41:44.61 would take people to heaven after death 00:41:44.64\00:41:46.69 and then let them observe the wretched headache 00:41:46.72\00:41:49.70 of their surviving families back on earth 00:41:49.73\00:41:51.77 enduring since their death. 00:41:51.80\00:41:54.66 Do you think heaven would be heaven to a mother 00:41:54.69\00:41:58.38 who watches her family go through hell after she dies? 00:41:58.41\00:42:02.62 There would heaven at all. 00:42:02.65\00:42:04.63 The truth about death that Jesus teaches, 00:42:09.49\00:42:11.40 that the Bible teaches is the only true 00:42:11.43\00:42:14.31 that is utterly faithful to God's relentless love 00:42:14.34\00:42:17.43 for all of His earth children. 00:42:17.46\00:42:19.39 Good and bad, doesn't matter. 00:42:19.42\00:42:21.36 This is what happens. 00:42:21.39\00:42:22.85 You go to sleep, it will be just like that, just like that. 00:42:22.88\00:42:29.68 But wait a minute. Why? You know, what you're doing? 00:42:29.71\00:42:33.08 You're taking my mother out of heaven 00:42:33.11\00:42:36.83 and you're putting your back in a whole in the ground 00:42:36.86\00:42:39.87 that's what you're doing. 00:42:39.90\00:42:40.93 No, no, no, my friend, 00:42:40.96\00:42:42.44 that's not what the Bible is doing. 00:42:42.47\00:42:44.24 Do you know what the Bible is doing? 00:42:44.27\00:42:45.76 The Bible is taking your mother 00:42:45.79\00:42:47.95 and putting her in the arms of Jesus, asleep. 00:42:47.98\00:42:54.15 You don't this very well, but your happiest days 00:42:54.18\00:42:58.95 when you were embraced in the arms of your mother, 00:42:58.98\00:43:03.80 you were at peace, you were secure. 00:43:03.83\00:43:07.07 Nothing mattered. Her arms were around you. 00:43:07.10\00:43:10.77 That is the truth about death. 00:43:10.80\00:43:14.53 You don't go to heaven, you don't go to hell, 00:43:14.56\00:43:19.08 you go to sleep. 00:43:19.11\00:43:21.82 You know nothing.
