Nelson. 00:00:08.90\00:00:13.75 There's a blessing in this house for you 00:00:20.12\00:00:26.32 There's a blessing in this house for you 00:00:29.28\00:00:35.52 Even though you can't see it 00:00:38.55\00:00:43.76 The Lord knows you need it 00:00:43.79\00:00:50.75 Believe me when I tell you 00:00:50.78\00:00:58.37 There's a blessing 00:00:58.40\00:01:01.16 in this house for you 00:01:01.19\00:01:07.54 Let's pray. 00:01:20.61\00:01:23.59 Father, we recognized 00:01:23.62\00:01:27.96 that this is not like any other morning. 00:01:27.99\00:01:33.05 This is Your Sabbath day 00:01:33.08\00:01:37.18 and we don't necessarily come with our best. 00:01:37.21\00:01:41.86 We don't necessarily come having given our all 00:01:41.89\00:01:46.86 but we pray Father, that as we gaze upon You 00:01:46.89\00:01:51.63 and as we reflect on the awesome God 00:01:51.66\00:01:54.36 that You are that we would be compelled by the Holy Spirit 00:01:54.39\00:01:59.39 to offer not just our best but all of ourselves. 00:01:59.42\00:02:04.58 And that we offer not just a bit of our time 00:02:04.61\00:02:08.67 but all of our time. 00:02:08.70\00:02:11.97 So Father, move us this morning in such a way 00:02:12.00\00:02:17.18 that gives You honor and glory. 00:02:17.21\00:02:21.32 In that we may become living sacrifices to You. 00:02:21.35\00:02:27.28 In Christ name we pray, amen. 00:02:27.31\00:02:32.67 Join us as we sing, 00:02:32.70\00:02:33.87 our opening hymn this morning Christ is alive. 00:02:33.90\00:02:37.87 Christ is alive! every need 00:10:28.38\00:10:34.67 You satisfy me with Your love 00:10:34.70\00:10:40.96 And all I have in You 00:10:40.99\00:10:44.37 Is more than enough 00:10:44.40\00:10:49.08 Couple of years ago this side 00:10:59.77\00:11:01.37 of the world in this hemisphere experienced a catastrophic event 00:11:01.40\00:11:07.67 on the Island of Espaņola. 00:11:07.70\00:11:09.29 It's an island that shared on one side 00:11:09.32\00:11:11.31 by the Dominican Republic and on the other side Haiti. 00:11:11.34\00:11:15.34 Since that tragedy, Andrews University 00:11:15.37\00:11:17.82 in many different ways has been involved 00:11:17.85\00:11:20.17 in helping to rebuilt some of the structures that are there 00:11:20.20\00:11:25.02 and revitalized the university community. 00:11:25.05\00:11:28.30 Chantel is part of the architectures 00:11:28.33\00:11:32.20 master's program 00:11:32.23\00:11:33.88 and she's gonna tell us little bit about 00:11:33.91\00:11:36.39 what it's been like in last couple of years. 00:11:36.42\00:11:38.24 Chantel. 00:11:38.27\00:11:40.75 Good morning, church. 00:11:40.78\00:11:43.18 Imagine-- if you look around you imagine 00:11:43.21\00:11:45.45 every single person here 00:11:45.48\00:11:47.40 and many more just being homeless. 00:11:47.43\00:11:50.73 All you have is the spot that you are in. 00:11:50.76\00:11:54.06 That is pretty much 00:11:54.09\00:11:55.34 what happened to these people within a matter of minutes. 00:11:55.37\00:11:58.75 And a lot of them are lucky to still be alive 00:11:58.78\00:12:01.88 but have nowhere to go 00:12:01.91\00:12:03.53 and don't have structures to work in, no jobs. 00:12:03.56\00:12:06.82 And what we were trying to do as a school 00:12:06.85\00:12:13.06 as a community has come together 00:12:13.09\00:12:15.39 and try and find a way that we can help them 00:12:15.42\00:12:17.46 rebuild themselves and to, 00:12:17.49\00:12:20.65 you know, find a way to get back on their feet. 00:12:20.68\00:12:24.48 Right now in the sister school in Port-au-Prince 00:12:24.51\00:12:27.90 they have most of their students almost all their-- 00:12:27.93\00:12:30.68 pretty much all their students 00:12:30.71\00:12:31.79 are still living in tents since-- 00:12:31.82\00:12:34.57 since that happened a couple of years ago. 00:12:34.60\00:12:36.94 And a lot of the buildings they use to have their own business 00:12:36.97\00:12:41.32 that would-- that would kind off give them some income, 00:12:41.35\00:12:43.56 those were devastated as well and they try to work outside 00:12:43.59\00:12:46.14 but it's still not, you know, sufficient. 00:12:46.17\00:12:48.04 So we're gonna go and try our best to go out there 00:12:48.07\00:12:50.08 and see what we can do to try and bring them back 00:12:50.11\00:12:51.70 on their feet and be able to become better than 00:12:51.73\00:12:55.31 what they were before the incident so. 00:12:55.34\00:12:59.20 So tomorrow morning at about 4 am 00:12:59.23\00:13:02.60 15 to 20 architecture students 00:13:02.63\00:13:05.85 are loading a bus heading to Chicago 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.91 and gonna get on a plane and spend the next ten days 00:13:08.94\00:13:12.53 in Haiti at our sister university. 00:13:12.56\00:13:14.02 What's the thing that you are doing specifically? 00:13:14.05\00:13:16.49 Specifically we have a couple of different groups 00:13:16.52\00:13:19.21 and a few professionals coming with us as well 00:13:19.24\00:13:21.59 and we're gonna-- 00:13:21.62\00:13:23.62 in the morning we will be working 00:13:23.65\00:13:25.01 actually physically building block by block. 00:13:25.04\00:13:28.34 We're going to be building a parapet wall 00:13:28.37\00:13:30.40 on one of the churches that were destroyed 00:13:30.43\00:13:33.74 and a lot of the campus was attacked 00:13:33.77\00:13:36.47 compared to the surroundings 00:13:36.50\00:13:39.60 but they do need facilities there is no -- 00:13:39.63\00:13:43.52 boys dormitory and so we're going to be designing 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.75 and remodeling and taking notes 00:13:46.78\00:13:49.71 so that we can further build in projects down there. 00:13:49.74\00:13:54.98 It is awesome to know that we are part of a community 00:13:55.01\00:13:58.67 that not only rebuilds buildings 00:13:58.70\00:14:02.11 but are resurrecting a university life down there. 00:14:02.14\00:14:07.75 Could you imagine coming to school 00:14:07.78\00:14:10.65 and seeing nothing but tents. 00:14:10.68\00:14:14.46 It sounds like camping. 00:14:14.49\00:14:16.79 Don't think I would enjoy camping 00:14:16.82\00:14:18.27 and ten inches of snow though. 00:14:18.30\00:14:21.61 We're blessed because these students 00:14:21.64\00:14:23.09 are dedicating their skills, their education, 00:14:23.12\00:14:25.76 their time along with the faculty and staff 00:14:25.79\00:14:28.09 in partnership with the university down there 00:14:28.12\00:14:30.73 to resurrect this campus. 00:14:30.76\00:14:32.57 Our prayers are with you, amen. 00:14:32.60\00:14:35.81 Soon I will be done 00:14:40.10\00:14:42.35 With the troubles of the 00:26:52.48\00:26:56.82 You did that with the blind man too. 00:26:56.85\00:26:58.49 You said the blind man was not born blind 00:26:58.52\00:27:00.98 because of his sin so that God might be glorified. 00:27:01.01\00:27:03.02 Now you are saying Lazarus is sick 00:27:03.05\00:27:04.42 so that God might be glorified, so that I might be glorified. 00:27:04.45\00:27:07.47 What are you saying? 00:27:07.50\00:27:10.09 Craig Keener the New Testament 00:27:10.12\00:27:11.32 scholar in his commentary on John 00:27:11.35\00:27:14.04 I put his words on the screen for you. 00:27:14.07\00:27:16.27 "Lazarus's sickness and raising also lead to 00:27:16.30\00:27:20.71 and prefigure Jesus' own death and resurrection 00:27:20.74\00:27:23.01 and so the promise of Jesus glorification 00:27:23.04\00:27:26.28 through Lazarus's death constitutes a double entendre." 00:27:26.31\00:27:32.00 Two meanings, one declaration. 00:27:32.03\00:27:35.15 "Jesus is glorified 00:27:35.18\00:27:38.52 because Lazarus's raising leads directly 00:27:38.55\00:27:41.00 to Jesus arrest and passion by which he is glorified." 00:27:41.03\00:27:45.57 In other words, Jesus is saying hey listen, 00:27:45.60\00:27:47.35 don't worry the disciples can not comprehend this at all. 00:27:47.38\00:27:50.04 But He is saying listen I'm gonna be glorified 00:27:50.07\00:27:52.24 because when Lazarus is raised it would be shown I'm whom I'm. 00:27:52.27\00:27:57.50 You will see that I'm divine. 00:27:57.53\00:27:59.30 And number two, I will be glorified 00:27:59.33\00:28:01.56 because that resurrection will precipitate 00:28:01.59\00:28:04.77 my tragic execution. 00:28:04.80\00:28:10.11 His raising will send me to the cross. 00:28:10.14\00:28:12.61 And in the fourth gospel whenever Jesus goes to the cross 00:28:12.64\00:28:15.74 that is the pinnacle glorification, 00:28:15.77\00:28:17.57 that's the summation of glorification. 00:28:17.60\00:28:19.78 So either way He's gonna be glorified. 00:28:19.81\00:28:24.31 Verse 5 chance is, wait a minute-- 00:28:24.34\00:28:27.53 I don't want you to think Jesus is cold and calculating 00:28:27.56\00:28:29.87 hey let the sisters agonize and Lazarus die. 00:28:29.90\00:28:32.83 No, no, John says, I need you to know verse 5 00:28:32.86\00:28:34.94 and so He sticks his end. 00:28:34.97\00:28:36.10 "Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister Mary and Lazarus. 00:28:36.13\00:28:43.43 So," verse 6 "when He heard that Lazarus was sick, 00:28:43.46\00:28:46.34 He stayed two more days in this place where He was." 00:28:46.37\00:28:48.85 Now wait a minute time out there-- 00:28:48.88\00:28:50.24 look something is wrong with this picture. 00:28:50.27\00:28:54.11 I mean you love them really, 00:28:54.14\00:28:55.40 so you chose delay hearing to their suffering sides. 00:28:55.43\00:29:01.71 Oh, no, Elizabeth Viera Talbot writes, 00:29:01.74\00:29:05.94 no, no, no there is nothing wrong with this picture 00:29:05.97\00:29:07.78 this is the way it works. 00:29:07.81\00:29:09.42 I want to put her words on the screen for you, 00:29:09.45\00:29:10.72 you have to fill them in. 00:29:10.75\00:29:12.19 Her marvelous little book Jesus one on one, 00:29:12.22\00:29:14.54 John: God Became Flesh. 00:29:14.57\00:29:17.09 Elizabeth Talbot is a powerful preacher 00:29:17.12\00:29:18.81 in our community of faith. 00:29:18.84\00:29:20.34 We were both together at Arizona 00:29:20.37\00:29:21.91 and Oregon camp meetings this summer and I will tell you what, 00:29:21.94\00:29:24.90 she is one of the most powerful preachers I have heard. 00:29:24.93\00:29:28.16 So she wrote this little book put it on the screen for you. 00:29:28.19\00:29:30.12 "How strange!" Elizabeth writes 00:29:30.15\00:29:31.99 "It doesn't make sense to say. 00:29:32.02\00:29:33.17 'He loved so He delayed.' Or does it? 00:29:33.20\00:29:35.99 Obviously it isn't the lack of affection 00:29:36.02\00:29:37.73 that delayed the son of God. 00:29:37.76\00:29:38.81 So what was it?" 00:29:38.84\00:29:40.18 I personal testimony now "I" she writes 00:29:40.21\00:29:42.88 "have come to trust God's timing 00:29:42.91\00:29:44.56 even though I usually don't understand it. 00:29:44.59\00:29:46.55 I have a motto that has helped me countless times," 00:29:46.58\00:29:49.72 Here comes the motto fill it in. 00:29:49.75\00:29:51.24 "Delays are designed 00:29:51.27\00:29:52.74 to show the magnitude 00:29:52.77\00:29:55.51 the magnitude" "of the miracle." 00:29:55.54\00:29:59.21 You think about it folks, 00:30:02.05\00:30:03.12 if we always got what we wanted, 00:30:03.15\00:30:05.20 when we wanted it the miraculous nature of God 00:30:05.23\00:30:07.50 response would hardly be evident. 00:30:07.53\00:30:08.89 I mean, hey, please give it to me quick, quick, quick. 00:30:08.92\00:30:12.40 Delays are designed to show the magnitude of the miracle." 00:30:12.43\00:30:16.35 Some of you are experiencing and a-- 00:30:16.38\00:30:18.50 a delay right now you have been asking 00:30:18.53\00:30:20.57 and asking and it almost feels like 00:30:20.60\00:30:22.72 nobody is even listening anymore. 00:30:22.75\00:30:24.81 My friend, could it be that the delay 00:30:24.84\00:30:27.10 is going to heighten the magnitude 00:30:27.13\00:30:30.02 of God's intervention one day. 00:30:30.05\00:30:31.70 So don't quit, don't quit asking, 00:30:31.73\00:30:33.47 don't quit praying. 00:30:33.50\00:30:37.16 Desire of Ages from this chapter on Lazarus 00:30:37.19\00:30:39.65 this beautiful promise 00:30:39.68\00:30:41.08 and I put it on the screen for you. 00:30:41.11\00:30:42.92 "To all who are reaching out to feel the guiding hand of God, 00:30:42.95\00:30:46.44 the moment of greatest discouragement 00:30:46.47\00:30:49.39 is the time when divine help is nearest." 00:30:49.42\00:30:52.86 Write that in. 00:30:52.89\00:30:54.55 When you are the most discouraged 00:30:54.58\00:30:56.40 that's when the help is nearest from God. 00:30:56.43\00:30:58.95 Keep reading, "They will look back 00:30:58.98\00:31:00.96 with thankfulness upon the darkest part of their way." 00:31:00.99\00:31:05.91 You look back and say thank you, Jesus. 00:31:05.94\00:31:09.31 You were that close 00:31:09.34\00:31:10.78 I didn't sense it then but thank You. 00:31:10.81\00:31:13.52 So take courage my friend, 00:31:13.55\00:31:16.17 and in your darkness hang on to Him 00:31:16.20\00:31:17.97 for when God does respond. 00:31:18.00\00:31:19.41 You will see the magnitude of His miracle. 00:31:19.44\00:31:22.04 So Jesus delays two more days. 00:31:22.07\00:31:23.78 Not a word about Lazarus, 00:31:23.81\00:31:25.73 not a word about Mary and Martha 00:31:25.76\00:31:28.65 and suddenly after two days He says, hey, 00:31:28.68\00:31:30.01 let' s go back to Judea and the disciple say-- 00:31:30.04\00:31:32.24 they forgot all about Lazarus, Mary and Martha. 00:31:32.27\00:31:34.08 What don't You understand that in chapter 10 00:31:34.11\00:31:37.18 they just tried to stone you. 00:31:37.21\00:31:38.54 You can't go back to Judea. 00:31:38.57\00:31:40.13 Verse 9, "Jesus answered," 00:31:43.78\00:31:46.13 look "'Are there not twelve hours in the day? 00:31:46.16\00:31:49.58 If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, 00:31:49.61\00:31:52.67 because he sees the light in this world." 00:31:52.70\00:31:54.67 "But" verse 10 "if one walks in the night, 00:31:54.70\00:31:57.52 he stumbles, because the light is not in him."' 00:31:57.55\00:32:01.07 My hour is not quite yet, its still life for me. 00:32:01.10\00:32:06.29 We must go "These" verse 11 00:32:06.32\00:32:08.74 "These things He said and after that He said to them" 00:32:08.77\00:32:11.40 oh and by the way "'Our friend Lazarus sleeps, 00:32:11.43\00:32:15.50 but I go that I may wake him up.'" 00:32:15.53\00:32:17.95 His disciples who are always taking Him literally 00:32:17.98\00:32:20.68 "His disciples said, 'Lord, if he sleeps he will get well."' 00:32:20.71\00:32:23.79 Everybody knows a sick man needs his rest. 00:32:23.82\00:32:27.05 However verse 13, "Jesus spoke of Lazarus death 00:32:27.08\00:32:30.41 but they thought He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. 00:32:30.44\00:32:32.72 Then Jesus said to them plainly" 00:32:32.75\00:32:34.44 verse 14, "'Lazarus is dead."' 00:32:34.47\00:32:39.68 Isn't that stunning? 00:32:39.71\00:32:41.52 I mean look at-- jot this down 00:32:41.55\00:32:42.58 "To the word made flesh what is death but a sleep." 00:32:42.61\00:32:48.57 A dreamless sleep from which you can be awaken one day, 00:32:48.60\00:32:52.37 that's what Jesus is teaching His disciples 00:32:52.40\00:32:54.12 that's what He is teaching 00:32:54.15\00:32:55.20 that's what He is telling you and me this morning. 00:32:55.23\00:32:57.41 When you die you fall asleep. 00:32:57.44\00:33:00.00 Now you may fall asleep gradually 00:33:00.03\00:33:02.09 as death for some approaches 00:33:02.12\00:33:05.40 or you may fall asleep suddenly even violently 00:33:05.43\00:33:12.60 but no matter how death comes you fall asleep. 00:33:12.63\00:33:16.75 But I can awaken you "Our friend Lazarus is dead, 00:33:16.78\00:33:21.19 but I am going to awaken him!" 00:33:21.22\00:33:24.61 That's the point 00:33:24.64\00:33:27.32 when I had my unexpected surgery this last march 00:33:27.35\00:33:31.50 they wheeled me into the operating room 00:33:31.53\00:33:32.71 at Lakeland hospital. 00:33:32.74\00:33:33.77 They're just a fine team docs and nurses there. 00:33:33.80\00:33:40.20 So they wheeled me into the operating room 00:33:40.23\00:33:42.01 and a cheery nurse tells me 00:33:42.04\00:33:43.96 that this is time to me to go to sleep 00:33:43.99\00:33:48.24 as if I could protest. 00:33:48.27\00:33:49.90 There was no countdown 60, 59, 58 00:33:49.93\00:33:52.91 it was just like that gone. 00:33:52.94\00:33:57.49 I was as we say dead to the world, 00:33:57.52\00:34:01.69 dead to the world. 00:34:01.72\00:34:05.33 A very next voice I heard was another cheery nurse 00:34:05.36\00:34:11.50 in recovery saying Dwight, its time to wake up. 00:34:11.53\00:34:15.19 Dwight, Dwight, Dwight, 00:34:15.22\00:34:16.25 wake up, wake up and I woke up. 00:34:16.28\00:34:20.31 I had absolutely no clue as to the passage of time, 00:34:20.34\00:34:22.80 was it two minutes was it two hours 00:34:22.83\00:34:24.59 was it two days I didn't know. 00:34:24.62\00:34:28.86 I knew nothing, I heard nothing, 00:34:28.89\00:34:31.66 I felt nothing, its gone then I woke up. 00:34:31.69\00:34:38.69 Because of the sleep metaphor the Jesus intentionally uses, 00:34:38.72\00:34:41.51 here by the way the Old Testament is rife 00:34:41.54\00:34:43.84 with this metaphor as it is the New Testament 00:34:43.87\00:34:45.81 because of this metaphor 00:34:45.84\00:34:46.91 we know that for all who die the space 00:34:46.94\00:34:50.09 between their death and return of Christ 00:34:50.12\00:34:52.61 is compressed into one single spilt second. 00:34:52.64\00:34:58.03 Just like that. 00:34:58.06\00:34:59.26 I like the way my friend, Cliff Goldstein 00:34:59.29\00:35:01.04 described in an column he wrote this last summer 00:35:01.07\00:35:02.82 in Adventist Review, June. 00:35:02.85\00:35:05.49 Put it on the screen for you 00:35:05.52\00:35:06.58 and you have it in your study guide you have to fill it in 00:35:06.61\00:35:08.16 "Whether Abel, the first recorded dead man, 00:35:08.19\00:35:11.03 or whether the last saint to perish 00:35:11.06\00:35:12.57 before probation closes," before Jesus comes 00:35:12.60\00:35:15.07 "or whether the untold number of deceased 00:35:15.10\00:35:17.30 in between as far as they are concerned" 00:35:17.33\00:35:20.10 all the death are concerned, "Jesus comes instantly." 00:35:20.13\00:35:24.67 Instantly our eyes close in death 00:35:24.70\00:35:27.11 and our next sensation whether after five millennia 00:35:27.14\00:35:30.46 or five minutes is Christ's return. 00:35:30.49\00:35:36.09 Abel's experience will be the same 00:35:36.12\00:35:37.74 as everyone else's who has died in faith." 00:35:37.77\00:35:40.98 For it be just a spilt second for Abel. 00:35:41.01\00:35:45.93 Our friend Lazarus, how did Jesus put it 00:35:45.96\00:35:48.73 "Our friend Lazarus is death, but I am going to awaken him!" 00:35:48.76\00:35:55.18 And so they come striding into that little village 00:35:55.21\00:35:57.15 about two miles away from Jerusalem and been to Bethany. 00:35:57.18\00:36:02.53 They come to the outskirts of the village 00:36:02.56\00:36:03.66 and they discovered the Lazarus had already been dead four days. 00:36:03.69\00:36:09.99 Verse 20 "Now Martha" she hears about them coming. 00:36:10.02\00:36:15.03 "Now Martha, as soon as she heard 00:36:15.06\00:36:16.16 that Jesus was coming," 00:36:16.19\00:36:17.39 and Jesus wisely stayed out of the village. 00:36:17.42\00:36:19.83 There's a death threat on Him you understand. 00:36:19.86\00:36:22.90 He is not going to precipitate and an untimely death. 00:36:22.93\00:36:26.94 He will dictate the terms and the time 00:36:26.97\00:36:30.49 but He wisely stays outside the village. 00:36:30.52\00:36:34.19 Martha when "she heard that 00:36:34.22\00:36:35.25 Jesus was coming, went and met Him, 00:36:35.28\00:36:36.77 but Mary was still sitting in the house. 00:36:36.80\00:36:42.79 Now Martha said to Jesus," 00:36:42.82\00:36:44.89 verse 21, oh, how often we have heard, 00:36:44.92\00:36:48.30 perhaps even spoken these words ourselves. 00:36:48.33\00:36:50.48 "'Lord, if You had been here, 00:36:50.51\00:36:53.77 my brother would not have died." 00:36:53.80\00:36:58.36 Oh, God what were You thinking, 00:36:58.39\00:37:00.98 we were asking and praying and pleading. 00:37:01.01\00:37:04.82 We had many people asking and pray 00:37:04.85\00:37:07.87 and pleading why didn't You come when we needed You? 00:37:07.90\00:37:11.29 Martha goes on verse 22 00:37:17.06\00:37:19.86 "'But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, 00:37:19.89\00:37:22.90 God will give You.' 00:37:22.93\00:37:24.99 Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.'" 00:37:25.02\00:37:28.66 No hint that it will be today. Your brother will rise again. 00:37:28.69\00:37:32.57 "Martha said to Him, 'I know that he will rise again 00:37:32.60\00:37:34.46 in the resurrection at the last day.'" 00:37:34.49\00:37:36.02 Verse 25, but "Jesus said to her, 00:37:36.05\00:37:38.00 'I am'" I am the bread, 00:37:38.03\00:37:45.93 I am the water, 00:37:45.96\00:37:48.64 I am the light, I am the wine, 00:37:48.67\00:37:53.65 "'I am the resurrection and the life. 00:37:53.68\00:37:59.01 He who believes in Me, 00:37:59.04\00:38:00.23 though he may die, he shall live.' 00:38:00.26\00:38:02.88 And whoever believes and whoever lives 00:38:02.91\00:38:04.84 and believes in Me shall never die.'" 00:38:04.87\00:38:07.44 Can't mean he will never die Lazarus just died. 00:38:07.47\00:38:11.58 "'Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. 00:38:11.61\00:38:13.67 Do you believe this? 00:38:13.70\00:38:14.82 And she said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, 00:38:14.85\00:38:17.08 I believe that You are the Christ, 00:38:17.11\00:38:19.77 the Son of God, who is to come into the world.'" 00:38:19.80\00:38:25.06 Martha then sends quietly word to Mary. 00:38:25.09\00:38:28.83 She wants the authorities to know that Jesus is here. 00:38:28.86\00:38:31.88 She sends a word to Mary. 00:38:31.91\00:38:33.68 Mary her eyes swollen red 00:38:33.71\00:38:35.72 with tears comes running to Jesus. 00:38:35.75\00:38:38.92 Verse 32 "And when Mary came where Jesus was, 00:38:38.95\00:38:41.34 and saw Him, she fell down at His feet" 00:38:41.37\00:38:45.44 You can see this in your eye. 00:38:45.47\00:38:47.46 "She fell down at His feet, 00:38:47.49\00:38:51.28 saying to Him, 'Lord,'" the identical words, 00:38:51.31\00:38:53.23 "'Lord if you had been here, 00:38:53.26\00:38:57.32 my brother would not have died.' 00:38:57.35\00:39:02.25 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, 00:39:02.28\00:39:05.23 and the Jews who came with her weeping, 00:39:05.26\00:39:07.90 He groaned in the spirit" 00:39:07.93\00:39:09.48 this is deeply emotional language in the Greek. 00:39:09.51\00:39:12.17 "He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 00:39:12.20\00:39:15.24 And he said, 'Where have you laid him?' 00:39:15.27\00:39:16.84 And they said to Him, 'Lord, come and see.'" 00:39:16.87\00:39:19.70 And verse 35 shortest line in all scripture, "Jesus wept." 00:39:19.73\00:39:27.67 On this page of my Bible right at the top, 00:39:27.70\00:39:30.34 I have these words by the poet William Blake scribbled in pen 00:39:30.37\00:39:34.69 "Till our grief is fled and gone 00:39:34.72\00:39:39.73 He doth sit by us and moan." 00:39:39.76\00:39:46.07 "Jesus wept" The word made flesh, wept. 00:39:46.10\00:39:52.01 A writer somewhere and I don't know who or where 00:39:54.06\00:39:58.52 but I will not forget the line put it this way. 00:39:58.55\00:40:02.35 When Jesus wept the ground of all being shook. 00:40:02.38\00:40:08.12 Jesus wept. 00:40:11.40\00:40:13.01 Christianity is the only religion 00:40:13.04\00:40:17.44 beautiful baptism this morning of our Hindu students 00:40:17.47\00:40:22.88 who has accepted Jesus Christ are sure as his Lord and Savior. 00:40:22.91\00:40:27.43 Christianity is the only religion on the earth 00:40:27.46\00:40:30.75 with the God of the religion is immersed 00:40:30.78\00:40:35.08 in the suffering of his children. 00:40:35.11\00:40:41.06 But Desire of Ages draws the veil of side 00:40:41.09\00:40:44.07 to this two word deceleration. 00:40:44.10\00:40:47.86 With these words I put it on the screen for you. 00:40:47.89\00:40:49.66 This is something but-- 00:40:49.69\00:40:50.75 "But it was not only because of His human sympathy 00:40:50.78\00:40:52.90 with Mary and Martha that Jesus wept. 00:40:52.93\00:40:55.00 In his tears there was a sorrow 00:40:55.03\00:40:56.59 as high above human sorrow 00:40:56.62\00:40:58.39 as the heavens are higher than the earth. 00:40:58.42\00:41:00.56 The weight of the grief of ages was upon Him. 00:41:00.59\00:41:03.54 He saw the terrible effects 00:41:03.57\00:41:04.70 of the transgression of God's law. 00:41:04.73\00:41:06.38 He saw that in the history of the world, 00:41:06.41\00:41:08.00 beginning with the death of Abel, 00:41:08.03\00:41:09.58 the conflict between good and evil had been unceasing. 00:41:09.61\00:41:12.89 Looking down the years to come," to where you come and I come 00:41:12.92\00:41:16.41 "He saw the suffering and sorrow, 00:41:16.44\00:41:18.11 the tears and death that were to be the lot of all of us. 00:41:18.14\00:41:21.58 His heart was pierced with the pain 00:41:21.61\00:41:23.77 of the human family of all ages and in all lands. 00:41:23.80\00:41:27.57 The woes of the sinful race were heavy upon His soul, 00:41:27.60\00:41:31.58 and the fountain" write that in. 00:41:31.61\00:41:33.76 This wasn't just a little tear that trickled down his cheek. 00:41:33.79\00:41:36.69 "And the fountain of His tears was broken up 00:41:36.72\00:41:40.60 as He longed to relieve all our distress." 00:41:40.63\00:41:47.83 The fountain, 00:41:47.86\00:41:49.99 He didn't pull a hanky out and say sniffles once. 00:41:50.02\00:41:52.40 He is sobbing now, 00:41:52.43\00:41:54.58 He is sobbing beside that grave, a cave. 00:41:54.61\00:42:01.01 Jesus wept-- and because he did ladies and gentlemen, 00:42:01.04\00:42:04.35 there is hope for the likes of you and me, 00:42:04.38\00:42:07.15 because he wept. 00:42:07.18\00:42:10.30 Verse 38 "And Jesus again groaning in Himself, 00:42:10.33\00:42:13.71 came to the tomb. 00:42:13.74\00:42:14.77 It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 00:42:14.80\00:42:17.25 Jesus said, 'Take away the stone.' 00:42:17.28\00:42:19.06 Martha" just oh-- don't move. 00:42:19.09\00:42:22.69 Master, you apparently misunderstood me. 00:42:22.72\00:42:28.62 "Martha, the sister of him who was dead, 00:42:28.65\00:42:30.09 said to Him, 'Lord, by this time there is a stench, 00:42:30.12\00:42:35.05 for he has been dead four days.'" 00:42:35.08\00:42:38.34 Twice now in a single narrative 00:42:38.37\00:42:40.59 we have been reminded he has been dead four days. 00:42:40.62\00:42:45.56 Craig Keener notes that among Palestinian Jews 00:42:45.59\00:42:48.13 at the time of Christ there was a tradition they believed 00:42:48.16\00:42:51.01 that after the death of an individual the person 00:42:51.04\00:42:53.54 or the soul of the deceased remain 00:42:53.57\00:42:58.39 in that place for three more days until-- 00:42:58.42\00:43:00.94 until decomposition set in. 00:43:00.97\00:43:06.62 And at the end of the third day 00:43:06.65\00:43:09.41 as the decomposition set in 00:43:09.44\00:43:11.23 that the person quote and quote "Left." 00:43:11.26\00:43:17.73 It is no accident then that Jesus waits until the fourth day 00:43:17.76\00:43:21.99 to come to make certain that no bid of folk law, 00:43:22.02\00:43:25.00 no little local tradition would be allow to counteract 00:43:25.03\00:43:28.08 and gainsay what is about to take place. 00:43:28.11\00:43:30.71 And Martha's interrupting response 00:43:30.74\00:43:32.73 at the grave loud enough for everyone there to hear 00:43:32.76\00:43:36.75 confirms that is a death four days old. 00:43:36.78\00:43:42.43 Decomposition has now set in, in that hot climate. 00:43:42.46\00:43:46.85 That's what happens. 00:43:46.88\00:43:48.29 It's the fourth day. 00:43:51.83\00:43:55.63 Verse 40, "Jesus said to her Martha, 00:43:55.66\00:43:58.97 'Didn't I say to you that if you would believe you 00:43:59.00\00:44:00.85 would see the glory of God?'" 00:44:00.88\00:44:03.33 And take that stone away 00:44:03.36\00:44:05.60 verse 41 "Then they took away the stone from the place 00:44:05.63\00:44:08.87 where the dead man was lying. 00:44:08.90\00:44:10.95 And Jesus lifted up His eyes 00:44:10.98\00:44:15.10 and He said "Father, 00:44:15.13\00:44:17.07 I thank you that you have heard Me. 00:44:17.10\00:44:20.09 And I know that you always hear Me, 00:44:20.12\00:44:22.11 but because of the people who are standing by I said this, 00:44:22.14\00:44:24.95 that they may believe you sent Me. 00:44:24.98\00:44:27.70 Now when He had said these things, 00:44:27.73\00:44:30.29 He cried with a loud voice, megale phone in the Greek. 00:44:30.32\00:44:35.11 Megaphone, He cries out with a megaphone voice, 00:44:35.14\00:44:38.17 "'Lazarus come forth!'" 00:44:38.20\00:44:43.72 And Verse 44, 00:44:43.75\00:44:44.79 "And he who had died 00:44:44.82\00:44:47.91 came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, 00:44:47.94\00:44:52.05 and his face wrapped with a cloth. 00:44:52.08\00:44:54.55 Jesus said to them, 'Loose him, let him go.'" 00:44:54.58\00:45:00.72 Death be not proud so loose him, 00:45:00.75\00:45:06.32 let him go, I'm resurrection in the life. 00:45:06.35\00:45:12.21 He who believes in Me though he dies yet shall he live, 00:45:12.24\00:45:16.46 she who believes in me though she dies yet shall she live. 00:45:16.49\00:45:23.52 With incontrovertible evidence 00:45:23.55\00:45:26.64 Christ says now proven His claim 00:45:26.67\00:45:28.51 that He is Almighty God made flesh. 00:45:28.54\00:45:32.08 Sanctified imagination, 00:45:37.84\00:45:40.36 it's not hard to picture the glorious pandemonium 00:45:40.39\00:45:44.72 that explodes around that grave cloths corpse 00:45:44.75\00:45:48.74 who with tiny little steps has made his way 00:45:48.77\00:45:52.42 to the front of the cave. 00:45:52.45\00:45:55.07 And no doubt he's calling out through the cloth, 00:45:55.10\00:45:59.91 would somebody unwind me? 00:45:59.94\00:46:01.99 Desire of Ages concludes the chapter with these words, 00:46:06.45\00:46:10.65 "Lazarus is set free, 00:46:10.68\00:46:14.89 and stands before the company, 00:46:14.92\00:46:16.00 not as one emaciated from disease, 00:46:16.03\00:46:17.74 and with feeble, tottering limbs, 00:46:17.77\00:46:19.41 but as a man in the prime of life, 00:46:19.44\00:46:21.30 and in the vigor of a noble manhood. 00:46:21.33\00:46:23.36 His eyes beam with intelligence and love for his Savior." 00:46:23.39\00:46:28.42 You can just see that look on his face 00:46:28.45\00:46:30.30 locked on Jesus eyes. 00:46:30.33\00:46:33.09 "His eyes beam 00:46:33.12\00:46:36.21 with intelligence and with love for his Savior." 00:46:36.24\00:46:38.15 And in a detail note recorded in the gospel. 00:46:38.18\00:46:41.60 "He casts himself in adoration 00:46:41.63\00:46:46.61 at the feet of Jesus." 00:46:46.64\00:46:50.56 What else will we do on that great getting up morning, 00:46:50.59\00:46:54.15 when from the dust of the earth 00:46:54.18\00:46:55.64 we arise to gaze upon the face of our life giver. 00:46:55.67\00:47:00.82 Will we not too cast ourselves 00:47:00.85\00:47:04.24 in attrition at His feet? 00:47:04.27\00:47:09.99 Desire of Ages, continues 00:47:10.02\00:47:11.50 "The beholders are at first speechless" 00:47:11.53\00:47:14.36 this is a great understanding. 00:47:14.39\00:47:16.35 "The beholders are at first speechless with amazement. 00:47:16.38\00:47:20.43 Then there follows an inexpressible" 00:47:20.46\00:47:23.13 meaning there is way to tell you. 00:47:23.16\00:47:24.67 "Then there follows an inexpressible scene 00:47:24.70\00:47:26.88 of rejoicing and thanksgiving. 00:47:26.91\00:47:28.47 The sisters receive their brother back to life 00:47:28.50\00:47:30.44 as a gift of God, and with joyful tears" 00:47:30.47\00:47:33.34 Mary and Martha, "brokenly are trying 00:47:33.37\00:47:34.90 to express their thanks to the savior. 00:47:34.93\00:47:36.43 But while brothers, sisters and friends 00:47:36.46\00:47:38.14 are rejoicing in this reunion, 00:47:38.17\00:47:40.14 Jesus withdraws from the scene." 00:47:40.17\00:47:42.79 And "When they look for the Life-giver, 00:47:42.82\00:47:46.28 He is not to be found." 00:47:46.31\00:47:49.09 He is gone. 00:47:49.12\00:47:50.34 The end. 00:47:53.97\00:47:56.62 Let me conclude by sharing with you two fascinating facts. 00:47:56.65\00:48:02.34 Fascinating fact number one, 00:48:02.37\00:48:03.58 did you know that in John's gospel, 00:48:03.61\00:48:06.51 Jesus public ministry begins and ends 00:48:06.54\00:48:10.06 with a public miracle. Did you know that? 00:48:10.09\00:48:12.88 It begins with the happiest 00:48:12.91\00:48:13.96 of all human gatherings a wedding, 00:48:13.99\00:48:16.15 where Jesus turns the water into wine 00:48:16.18\00:48:19.02 and it ends with the saddest 00:48:19.05\00:48:21.05 of all human gatherings a funeral 00:48:21.08\00:48:23.63 where Jesus turns dead into life. 00:48:23.66\00:48:28.80 A miracle at the beginning at a wedding 00:48:28.83\00:48:32.13 and a miracle at the end at a funeral 00:48:32.16\00:48:36.56 because when Jesus is in your story, 00:48:36.59\00:48:40.17 there is a miracle in store for you. 00:48:40.20\00:48:44.96 Write that down. 00:48:44.99\00:48:46.64 When Jesus is in your story, 00:48:46.67\00:48:49.98 there is a miracle in store for you. 00:48:50.01\00:48:54.51 So what's a miracle in store for you this New Year? 00:48:54.54\00:48:57.66 Could it be a resurrection? 00:48:57.69\00:48:59.22 You say come on Dwight, 00:48:59.25\00:49:00.28 I'm not dead yet, I hardly need one of those. 00:49:00.31\00:49:02.47 Let me rephrase the question. 00:49:02.50\00:49:04.62 Could it-- is there anything 00:49:04.65\00:49:05.86 in your life right now that is dying? 00:49:05.89\00:49:10.00 Something down deep inside 00:49:10.03\00:49:11.31 that is ebbing away in spite of all the CPR 00:49:11.34\00:49:13.65 that you have administered to keep it living. 00:49:13.68\00:49:16.09 It could be a relationship that is dying, 00:49:16.12\00:49:18.86 a friend, a lover, a child, a parent 00:49:18.89\00:49:22.21 right before your eyes it is dying. 00:49:22.24\00:49:24.73 It could be a marriage. 00:49:24.76\00:49:28.14 And in spite of all the resuscitation 00:49:28.17\00:49:29.90 that you have attempted it is slipping away 00:49:29.93\00:49:31.79 while you watch in heart broken disbelief. 00:49:31.82\00:49:36.57 It could be an ambition that you've cling to for years 00:49:36.60\00:49:39.49 hoping against hope 00:49:39.52\00:49:40.96 that the right opportunity for that ambition 00:49:40.99\00:49:42.79 might yet present itself but after all this time 00:49:42.82\00:49:45.83 it is finally clear that, that opportunity 00:49:45.86\00:49:48.50 is not gonna ever come your way 00:49:48.53\00:49:50.44 and that ambition will have to die. 00:49:50.47\00:49:54.79 Is there anything in your life this New Year that is dying? 00:49:54.82\00:50:00.11 Your academic dream, 00:50:00.14\00:50:02.23 the major you would always hope to successfully conquer 00:50:02.26\00:50:06.10 but your grades have made its clear the dream is dead. 00:50:06.13\00:50:10.00 You'll have to change that major, 00:50:10.03\00:50:11.62 you'll have to abandon that career. 00:50:11.65\00:50:15.91 Perhaps it's your health it's dying, 00:50:15.94\00:50:18.88 and try as you and the doctors have, 00:50:18.91\00:50:22.96 you can't turn it around and death seems inevitable. 00:50:22.99\00:50:27.92 It maybe your faith that is on its death bed. 00:50:27.95\00:50:32.61 No amount of girding and striving and pretending 00:50:32.64\00:50:35.56 seems able to resuscitate the faith you grew up with. 00:50:35.59\00:50:39.79 Could it be and anyone of these 00:50:39.82\00:50:42.12 might be a miracle in store for you. 00:50:42.15\00:50:43.58 The resurrection you have been longing for this New Year, 00:50:43.61\00:50:47.56 I suppose it could. 00:50:47.59\00:50:50.30 But, but, what if, 00:50:50.33\00:50:56.18 what we want to have resurrected 00:50:56.21\00:50:58.88 isn't what needs to be resurrected. 00:50:58.91\00:51:03.13 What if Jesus has purposely stayed away 00:51:03.16\00:51:06.93 just long enough for that which is dying in me 00:51:06.96\00:51:09.93 to die in me, be it my health, 00:51:09.96\00:51:12.46 or my ambition, my dreams, in my marriage, 00:51:12.49\00:51:14.92 what if He stays away in hopes 00:51:14.95\00:51:21.27 that with that dying. 00:51:21.30\00:51:22.97 I might turn to Him as I never would have 00:51:23.00\00:51:26.36 had that which is dying not died in me. 00:51:26.39\00:51:30.85 Does my brooding make sense? 00:51:34.06\00:51:35.63 Are you following this? 00:51:35.66\00:51:37.83 What if, what if what is dying 00:51:37.86\00:51:40.83 is not what needs resurrecting right now 00:51:40.86\00:51:42.89 as important or as precious as that dying is to me? 00:51:42.92\00:51:48.89 What if as it was with Martha? 00:51:48.92\00:51:53.36 But Jesus longs to resurrect most this New Year 00:51:53.39\00:51:58.76 is an unshakable trust in Him 00:51:58.79\00:52:01.76 and unbreakable bound with Him. 00:52:01.79\00:52:05.57 "What if He allows that particular death in me, 00:52:05.60\00:52:12.34 so that He might resurrect that particular part of me?" 00:52:12.37\00:52:18.38 So He allows that ambition in me to die 00:52:18.41\00:52:20.69 that He might resurrect an ambition to live for Him. 00:52:20.72\00:52:23.75 So He allows that relationship to die in me 00:52:23.78\00:52:26.31 so that He might resurrect in relationship to live for Him. 00:52:26.34\00:52:29.42 So that He allows that dream to die in me 00:52:29.45\00:52:32.40 that He might resurrect a dream to live for Him. 00:52:32.43\00:52:37.32 Fascinating fact number one, 00:52:37.35\00:52:40.62 "A miracle at the beginning, a miracle at the end, 00:52:40.65\00:52:45.74 because when Jesus is in your story, 00:52:45.77\00:52:49.10 a miracle is in store for you." 00:52:49.13\00:52:52.42 And finally fascinating fact number two, 00:52:52.45\00:52:55.28 archeologist have discovered 00:52:55.31\00:52:59.82 a burial cave in Bethany today, 00:52:59.85\00:53:03.73 that days back to the time of Christ 00:53:03.76\00:53:06.94 and inside that cave they examine the walls 00:53:06.97\00:53:10.10 and they discover a list of names carved on those walls. 00:53:10.13\00:53:14.80 And as they carefully read through their names, 00:53:14.83\00:53:16.72 they came upon three names that appear together, 00:53:16.75\00:53:19.83 Mary, Martha and Eleazar which in Greek is Lazarus. 00:53:19.86\00:53:27.70 Isn't that something? 00:53:27.73\00:53:31.45 Dust is all that remains of their remains 00:53:31.48\00:53:35.25 but when they were buried trust me, 00:53:35.28\00:53:39.49 I know this is true. 00:53:39.52\00:53:40.73 When they were buried those three siblings, 00:53:40.76\00:53:43.61 those three friends of Jesus I'm certain enough to believe 00:53:43.64\00:53:47.23 you can be absolutely certain too that each of them, 00:53:47.26\00:53:49.76 I don't know who died first 00:53:49.79\00:53:51.25 but each of them died confident in the unassailable truth. 00:53:51.28\00:53:56.46 That one day some day their friend 00:53:56.49\00:53:58.76 and Savior Jesus would return 00:53:58.79\00:54:00.38 to that very same cave in Bethany. 00:54:00.41\00:54:05.92 One day He will call all three of them forth to life 00:54:05.95\00:54:11.17 with Him forever and ever, amen. 00:54:11.20\00:54:17.81 And that my friend, is the miracle 00:54:17.84\00:54:19.33 that is in store for you too. 00:54:19.36\00:54:23.08 If my friend, 00:54:23.11\00:54:26.36 if Jesus is in your story too, 00:54:26.39\00:54:33.43 so the question is, this New Year is He in your story?
