From the campus of Andrews University, 00:00:06.26\00:00:08.92 this is "New Perceptions" with Dr. Dwight K. Nelson. 00:00:08.95\00:00:13.83 This is my desire, 00:00:29.63\00:00:35.50 To honor You 00:00:35.53\00:00:42.12 Lord, with all my heart 00:00:42.15\00:00:46.64 I worship You 00:00:46.67\00:00:49.06 All I have within me 00:00:54.92\00:01:00.80 I give You praise 00:01:00.83\00:01:07.38 All that I adore is in You 00:01:07.41\00:01:14.50 Lord, I give You my heart 00:01:20.48\00:01:24.21 I give You my soul 00:01:24.24\00:01:28.72 I live for You alone 00:01:28.75\00:01:32.94 Ev'ry breath that I take 00:01:32.97\00:01:36.16 Ev'ry moment I'm awake 00:01:36.19\00:01:41.17 Lord, have Your way in me 00:01:41.20\00:01:45.60 Lord, I gave You my heart 00:01:45.63\00:01:48.87 I give You my soul 00:01:48.90\00:01:53.58 I live for You alone 00:01:53.61\00:01:57.90 Ev'ry breath that I take 00:01:57.93\00:02:01.26 Ev'ry moment I'm awake 00:02:01.29\00:02:06.17 Lord, have Your way in me 00:02:06.20\00:02:10.98 I have a Maker, 00:02:41.49\00:02:47.76 He formed my heart 00:02:47.79\00:02:54.09 Before even time began, 00:02:54.12\00:02:59.24 My life was in His hand 00:02:59.27\00:03:06.93 He knows my name, 00:03:06.96\00:03:13.23 He knows my every thought 00:03:13.26\00:03:19.65 He sees each tear that falls 00:03:19.68\00:03:24.83 And hears me when I call 00:03:24.86\00:03:32.27 I have a Father, 00:03:32.30\00:03:38.75 He calls me His own 00:03:38.78\00:03:45.02 He'll never leave me, 00:03:45.05\00:03:50.22 No matter where I go 00:03:50.25\00:03:57.76 He knows my name 00:03:57.79\00:04:04.17 He knows my every thought 00:04:04.20\00:04:10.49 He sees each tear that falls 00:04:10.52\00:04:15.60 And hears me when I call 00:04:15.63\00:04:23.11 He knows my name 00:04:23.14\00:04:29.34 He knows my every thought 00:04:29.37\00:04:35.79 He sees each tear that falls 00:04:35.82\00:04:40.97 And hears me when I call 00:04:41.00\00:04:47.38 And hears me when I call 00:04:47.41\00:04:52.76 In a couple of the Gospels, there is a story. 00:04:57.04\00:04:59.81 Jesus is on the mountain, He has a crowd all around Him. 00:04:59.84\00:05:02.96 And He asked His disciples, 00:05:02.99\00:05:04.21 "we should probably feed these people." 00:05:04.24\00:05:07.33 And so they go and they're trying 00:05:07.36\00:05:08.78 to figure out how to do this. 00:05:08.81\00:05:10.05 You know, they respond, 00:05:10.08\00:05:11.68 well, how could we feed all these people 00:05:11.71\00:05:13.23 just send them home? 00:05:13.26\00:05:15.57 But they find a lad. It's the word that's used. 00:05:15.60\00:05:18.62 They find a lad and he has five loaves and two fish, 00:05:18.65\00:05:22.53 five loaves and two fish 00:05:22.56\00:05:24.43 and I remember the questions they asked. 00:05:24.46\00:05:25.73 But, what is that in the midst of this crowd. 00:05:25.76\00:05:29.56 What is that for these people, just five loaves and two fish? 00:05:29.59\00:05:32.12 May be you could even Jesus, maybe we can have a few scraps. 00:05:32.15\00:05:35.03 But Jesus takes those five loaves and two fish, 00:05:35.06\00:05:38.63 He blesses them and all of a sudden its more, 00:05:38.66\00:05:42.55 more than enough for everybody there. 00:05:42.58\00:05:45.66 There's baskets that are leftover. 00:05:45.69\00:05:49.89 What's the beautiful thing is that, 00:05:49.92\00:05:51.66 however unworthy we may feel 00:05:51.69\00:05:54.09 when we give it to Him it all of a sudden 00:05:54.12\00:05:55.90 becomes more than enough. 00:05:55.93\00:05:59.08 Whatever is it that Jesus has in His creative power 00:05:59.11\00:06:03.57 He can take the simple and serious things 00:06:03.60\00:06:07.49 that perhaps in our measurements 00:06:07.52\00:06:09.05 in our value aren't quite good enough, 00:06:09.08\00:06:10.91 don't quite measure up but when He receives them 00:06:10.94\00:06:14.28 because He is worthy they then become worthy. 00:06:14.31\00:06:19.08 That's what it means to have Jesus blessing. 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.31 Let's stand as we sing this to hymn together 00:06:21.34\00:06:23.75 "Worthy is the Lamb." 00:06:23.78\00:06:25.43 Worthy, worthy is the Lamb 00:07:01.06\00:07:05.64 Worthy, worthy is the Lamb 00:07:05.67\00:07:10.48 Worthy, worthy is the Lamb 00:07:10.51\00:07:15.07 That was slain through the valley in peace, 00:13:31.75\00:13:34.04 Jesus will lead us. 00:13:34.07\00:13:38.09 We live in a world languishing 00:13:38.12\00:13:41.87 for that valley of eternal peace 00:13:41.90\00:13:44.15 when shall it come. 00:13:44.18\00:13:51.28 It's business to do until You do come. 00:13:51.31\00:13:55.90 And so Holy Father, please, 00:13:55.93\00:14:00.07 let these moments in a Holy Scripture 00:14:00.10\00:14:04.17 open not only our minds 00:14:04.20\00:14:05.70 but open our hearts to Your teaching. 00:14:05.73\00:14:09.28 We pray in Jesus name, amen. 00:14:09.31\00:14:13.85 Stephen Hawking, you've heard of the, 00:14:13.88\00:14:15.60 the eminent British theoretical physicist. 00:14:15.63\00:14:20.12 Stephen Hawking turned 70 two weeks ago. 00:14:20.15\00:14:23.45 So to celebrate that milestone, 00:14:23.48\00:14:25.83 the magazine New Scientist 00:14:25.86\00:14:27.57 interviewed this brilliant author. 00:14:27.60\00:14:30.24 He wrote the book "A Brief History of Time" 00:14:30.27\00:14:33.07 you've read that book. 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.33 A brilliant scientist, they interviewed him. 00:14:35.36\00:14:39.25 And as a result of that interview 00:14:39.28\00:14:41.07 we now know the mystery 00:14:41.10\00:14:43.30 before which even the great Stephen Hawking bows 00:14:43.33\00:14:49.68 when the journalist asked him, 00:14:49.71\00:14:52.25 "What do you think about most during the day?" 00:14:52.28\00:14:56.40 Hawking replied and I put his words 00:14:56.43\00:14:58.38 on the screen for you. 00:14:58.41\00:15:00.44 "Women. 00:15:00.47\00:15:02.13 They are a complete mystery." 00:15:02.16\00:15:06.71 There you have ladies and gentlemen, 00:15:06.74\00:15:07.86 the pronouncement of one of the brightest minds on earth. 00:15:07.89\00:15:10.57 We now know that mystery, women. 00:15:10.60\00:15:14.79 But women were no mystery to Jesus. 00:15:14.82\00:15:19.06 They will remain one-half of His strategic plan 00:15:19.09\00:15:22.45 for the human race. 00:15:22.48\00:15:25.12 Case in point, our story today, Jesus and one woman. 00:15:25.15\00:15:30.60 Open your Bible with me please to the last days of earth, 00:15:39.11\00:15:42.21 the last seven days of Jesus life. 00:15:42.24\00:15:45.20 One-third of all four Gospels devoted to the last seven days 00:15:45.23\00:15:49.22 and that's what counts. 00:15:49.25\00:15:51.01 The last seven days, titled today's teaching 00:15:51.04\00:15:54.77 "Of perfume, Tears and Grumpy Old Man." 00:15:54.80\00:15:58.90 So grab your Bible, you didn't bring your Bible? 00:15:58.93\00:16:01.23 Oh, this is a narrative. 00:16:01.26\00:16:02.30 It's a short but punching narrative, 00:16:02.33\00:16:03.71 grab the pew Bible in front of you. to do, good. 00:16:41.02\00:16:43.62 Let's go. 00:16:43.65\00:16:44.68 All right, John Chapter 12, 00:16:44.71\00:16:47.09 so I'm in the New King James version. 00:16:47.12\00:16:48.38 Let's go to John 12:1. 00:16:48.41\00:16:53.62 "Then, six days before the Passover" 00:16:53.65\00:16:55.98 at the end of this week, He's dead. 00:16:56.01\00:16:58.72 This is Saturday night. 00:16:58.75\00:17:00.84 Six days from now He'll be dead, Cavalry. 00:17:00.87\00:17:03.89 "Then, six days before the Passover, 00:17:03.92\00:17:05.84 Jesus came to Bethany, 00:17:05.87\00:17:07.59 where Lazarus was who had been dead, 00:17:07.62\00:17:09.81 whom He had raised from the dead." 00:17:09.84\00:17:11.66 And so we were in the last week. 00:17:11.69\00:17:13.13 This is the same Lazarus, 00:17:13.16\00:17:14.34 this is last weeks story now just providing the linkage here. 00:17:14.37\00:17:18.08 There in that little village of Bethany 00:17:18.11\00:17:19.96 "They made Him a supper." 00:17:19.99\00:17:22.05 Jesus is the, He is the guest of honor. 00:17:22.08\00:17:25.03 But I need to tell you, that the-- 00:17:25.06\00:17:27.70 all the uninvited are crowded around 00:17:27.73\00:17:29.64 that banqueting hall that night 00:17:29.67\00:17:31.06 because for four days His body was decomposing 00:17:31.09\00:17:35.13 and now He's alive and everybody wants to see Lazarus. 00:17:35.16\00:17:38.25 So Lazarus is also a guest of honor. 00:17:38.28\00:17:42.62 So they made Him a supper. 00:17:42.65\00:17:43.91 In verse 2 "And Martha served" that would be Lazarus's sister. 00:17:43.94\00:17:47.51 "But Lazarus was one of those 00:17:47.54\00:17:48.88 who sat at the table with Jesus." 00:17:48.91\00:17:50.85 Then verse 3, Mary that would be Lazarus's other sister. 00:17:50.88\00:17:56.54 "Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, 00:17:56.57\00:18:01.49 anointed the feet of Jesus, 00:18:01.52\00:18:03.54 and wiped His feet with her hair. 00:18:03.57\00:18:05.85 And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil." 00:18:05.88\00:18:11.02 Now by the Greek language 00:18:11.05\00:18:12.48 here in John and the other three synoptic's 00:18:12.51\00:18:15.53 this nard plant, here's what we know about it. 00:18:15.56\00:18:17.43 This nard plant was a tiny 00:18:17.46\00:18:19.45 but fragrant blossom that only grew on the hills 00:18:19.48\00:18:23.85 at the feet of the mighty Himalayas in Northern India. 00:18:23.88\00:18:27.79 So you can understand it was rare 00:18:27.82\00:18:30.31 and exquisite perfume oil. 00:18:30.34\00:18:34.58 Easily it could command 00:18:34.61\00:18:36.78 an entire year of wages for commoner. 00:18:36.81\00:18:42.33 Scholars wondered did Mary somehow liquidate 00:18:42.36\00:18:44.50 her part of the family inheritance, we don't know. 00:18:44.53\00:18:47.32 All we know is that a great and great expense, 00:18:47.35\00:18:50.87 she purchase the pound of this spikenard 00:18:50.90\00:18:53.28 in a narrow alabaster flask 00:18:53.31\00:18:55.73 and quietly surreptitiously 00:18:55.76\00:18:57.91 slipping into the banqueting room full of men 00:18:57.94\00:19:02.01 she broke open her precious alabaster flask. 00:19:02.04\00:19:05.64 Read verse 3 again, "Then Mary took a pound" 00:19:05.67\00:19:08.94 now this is a Roman pounds about twelve ounces. 00:19:08.97\00:19:11.43 "Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, 00:19:11.46\00:19:15.05 anointed the feet of Jesus, 00:19:15.08\00:19:16.49 and wiped His feet with her hair. 00:19:16.52\00:19:18.32 And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil." 00:19:18.35\00:19:24.46 You know I can never fool, Karen. 00:19:24.49\00:19:25.81 When I come back shopping for a gift for her 00:19:25.84\00:19:27.94 I never fool her, whether it's for her birthday 00:19:27.97\00:19:29.86 or valentines or a Christmas or whatever 00:19:29.89\00:19:34.14 because I love to shop for perfume. 00:19:34.17\00:19:38.40 And so I go to that department store counter 00:19:38.43\00:19:41.71 and I am never contempt. 00:19:41.74\00:19:42.77 I don't know how you are guys but I'm never contempt 00:19:42.80\00:19:44.35 with just getting one little sample. 00:19:44.38\00:19:46.42 Look, I know they have these little white papers sticks 00:19:46.45\00:19:48.61 that you're supposed to 00:19:48.64\00:19:49.81 and then smell the stick, forget it. 00:19:49.84\00:19:51.26 For me it has to be on flesh. 00:19:51.29\00:19:52.46 I have to smell. 00:19:52.49\00:19:53.68 So up to they want to figure out oh, that's good. 00:19:53.71\00:19:57.70 And I take another one because I love to get a lot of them. 00:19:57.73\00:19:59.59 Take the other one, and get a third one. 00:19:59.62\00:20:04.29 I go with all the fingers and I see Karen do this Dwight, 00:20:04.32\00:20:06.74 drew on my wrists. 00:20:06.77\00:20:08.69 That is good. 00:20:08.72\00:20:10.63 Yeah, so, I got to check it all out. 00:20:10.66\00:20:12.36 Then I make the purchase and every time 00:20:12.39\00:20:14.88 when I come walking to the door she always guesses 00:20:14.91\00:20:17.05 what I bought her for a gift. 00:20:17.08\00:20:18.69 What's up with that? 00:20:18.72\00:20:20.55 Because a perfume worth its so cannot be hidden. 00:20:20.58\00:20:24.48 That's what's up. 00:20:24.51\00:20:25.88 And that's what happening here. 00:20:25.91\00:20:27.37 Mary has desperately tried to be discrete 00:20:27.40\00:20:30.29 and unnoticed as possible. 00:20:30.32\00:20:31.86 She timidly slips into that room of men. 00:20:31.89\00:20:33.92 She anoints the head and the feet of this Man, 00:20:33.95\00:20:35.83 who forgave her, her past of utter lostness. 00:20:35.86\00:20:40.75 He knew all about her past 00:20:40.78\00:20:43.14 and she can hardly restrain her tears, 00:20:43.17\00:20:46.22 such deep gratitude for that forgiveness. 00:20:46.25\00:20:50.39 By the way she just heard this man 00:20:50.42\00:20:52.99 seven times in tears himself, 00:20:53.02\00:20:55.64 pleading with His father deliver this woman 00:20:55.67\00:20:58.89 from what is holding her in the clutches. 00:20:58.92\00:21:01.75 Seven times He's begged for her deliverance. 00:21:01.78\00:21:05.35 And I'm telling you 00:21:05.38\00:21:06.41 it's just the heart bursting with gratitude. 00:21:06.44\00:21:09.08 And by the way the rumors out, 00:21:09.11\00:21:10.32 He's going to become the anointed Messiah King 00:21:10.35\00:21:14.29 and she wants to have her anointing 00:21:14.32\00:21:16.42 ahead of the public one. 00:21:16.45\00:21:19.21 And so she comes and breaks that flask 00:21:19.24\00:21:22.60 and the room becomes 00:21:22.63\00:21:24.06 a lovely department store perfume counter. 00:21:24.09\00:21:30.05 Verse 4, 00:21:30.08\00:21:31.16 "But one of His disciples, 00:21:31.19\00:21:38.66 Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, 00:21:38.69\00:21:41.56 who would betray Him, said, 00:21:41.59\00:21:46.31 'Why was this fragrant oil 00:21:46.34\00:21:48.47 not sold for three hundred denarii 00:21:48.50\00:21:50.65 and given to the poor?'" 00:21:50.68\00:21:53.00 This, verse 6, "This he said, not that he cared for the poor, 00:21:53.03\00:21:58.71 but because he was a thief, and had the money box 00:21:58.74\00:22:02.35 and he used to take what was put in it." 00:22:02.38\00:22:06.83 Unlike the synoptic, John intentionally ID's 00:22:06.86\00:22:13.78 two of the key players in Jesus story. 00:22:13.81\00:22:16.77 The protagonist, John reveals her name, 00:22:16.80\00:22:20.29 perhaps because Mary is now dead 00:22:20.32\00:22:22.19 and any embarrassment about her 00:22:22.22\00:22:23.76 checkered past is no longer relevant. 00:22:23.79\00:22:26.18 So he ID's the protagonist and he ID's the antagonist 00:22:26.21\00:22:30.91 because by identifying Judas as a instigator of this cruel 00:22:30.94\00:22:35.28 and heartless public shaming 00:22:35.31\00:22:38.66 John deftly creates a powerful contrast 00:22:38.69\00:22:42.17 between Judas's greed in Everest 00:22:42.20\00:22:45.17 and Mary's utterly sacrificial devotion to the Savior. 00:22:45.20\00:22:50.32 I mean like an awful, sour, 00:22:50.35\00:22:52.54 thumb beside her Judas sticks out. 00:22:52.57\00:22:56.64 But like a fragrant blossom 00:22:56.67\00:22:58.44 beside rancid waters is Mary. 00:22:58.47\00:23:05.22 Judas by the way was the chief instigator 00:23:05.25\00:23:07.95 but all the disciples, all the men piled on. 00:23:07.98\00:23:13.43 Watch this we'll go to the Gospel of Mark now 00:23:13.46\00:23:15.34 and just get to his reading. 00:23:15.37\00:23:16.76 Mark 14:3, "While Jesus was in Bethany reclining 00:23:16.79\00:23:19.61 at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, 00:23:19.64\00:23:21.83 a woman came with an alabaster jar 00:23:21.86\00:23:23.96 of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. 00:23:23.99\00:23:28.51 She broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus head. 00:23:28.54\00:23:31.98 Some of those present were saying 00:23:32.01\00:23:34.41 indignantly to one another, 00:23:34.44\00:23:35.97 'Why this waste of perfume?'" Can you believe it? 00:23:36.00\00:23:39.11 "'It could have been sold for more than a year's wages 00:23:39.14\00:23:41.56 and the money given to the poor.' 00:23:41.59\00:23:43.22 And they rebuked her harshly." 00:23:43.25\00:23:47.01 All of them rebuked her harshly. 00:23:47.04\00:23:52.14 So how does Jesus respond? 00:23:52.17\00:23:53.57 Back to your own Bible, verse 7, "But Jesus said, 00:23:53.60\00:23:58.42 'Let her alone she has kept this for the day of My burial. 00:23:58.45\00:24:05.73 For the poor you have with you always, 00:24:05.76\00:24:09.02 but Me you do not have always.'" 00:24:09.05\00:24:16.21 Leave her alone. 00:24:16.24\00:24:21.41 Won't you just love Jesus for that 00:24:21.44\00:24:23.55 when you think about it? 00:24:23.58\00:24:25.02 Come on, nobody speaks up in her defense, 00:24:25.05\00:24:28.84 not her brother Lazarus, not her sister Martha, 00:24:28.87\00:24:32.41 not one of the disciples that has tasted 00:24:32.44\00:24:35.46 and enjoyed the warmth of that congenial hospitality 00:24:35.49\00:24:39.50 in that little Bethany home. 00:24:39.53\00:24:40.78 Nobody speaks up, one Man, leave her alone. 00:24:40.81\00:24:48.65 How could we not help, but love Jesus for this? 00:24:48.68\00:24:52.23 I tell you what, it takes chutzpah 00:24:52.26\00:24:54.51 to speak in defense of the defenseless, doesn't it? 00:24:54.54\00:24:57.18 I mean, come on, you think about it, 00:24:57.21\00:24:58.24 it takes more a backbone to speak up 00:24:58.27\00:25:00.92 in defense of the minority, the marginalized 00:25:00.95\00:25:03.16 when no one else dare say a word, 00:25:03.19\00:25:05.50 it does take courage, doesn't it? 00:25:05.53\00:25:08.47 How can you not help but love Jesus 00:25:08.50\00:25:11.33 at a moment like this? 00:25:11.36\00:25:12.81 I mean, look at, He not only converses 00:25:12.84\00:25:14.92 his wit of Samaritan woman, 00:25:14.95\00:25:16.47 He makes a Samaritan the hero of one of His greatest parables 00:25:16.50\00:25:19.36 so that we end up calling that hero, 00:25:19.39\00:25:21.26 the Good Samaritan and the Jews hated Samaritans. 00:25:21.29\00:25:27.04 Jesus not only forgives prostitutes 00:25:27.07\00:25:28.73 and tax collectors and other sinners 00:25:28.76\00:25:30.88 He dines with them. 00:25:30.91\00:25:32.38 That's social chutzpah in spates. 00:25:32.41\00:25:36.98 And when nobody else has time for the children 00:25:37.01\00:25:39.92 who is this who gathers the little ones in His arms 00:25:39.95\00:25:42.30 and He hugs them and He blesses them. 00:25:42.33\00:25:46.17 Pagan Gentiles? 00:25:46.20\00:25:49.94 Now Jesus, Syrophoenician mother pagan Roman centurion 00:25:49.97\00:25:56.45 He is gonna die for them all. 00:25:56.48\00:25:59.82 And women, when the strictest Rabbi's 00:25:59.85\00:26:05.31 and the most orthodox Pharisees 00:26:05.34\00:26:07.82 would never be caught talking in public 00:26:07.85\00:26:09.80 to another women other than their own wife Jesus gratefully, 00:26:09.83\00:26:13.71 publicly receives the ministry of many women, many. 00:26:13.74\00:26:18.91 Look at this, this is Cavalry. 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.46 This is Mark Chapter 15 at the cross, 00:26:20.49\00:26:22.24 "There were also" there at the cross, 00:26:22.27\00:26:24.04 "women looking on from afar, 00:26:24.07\00:26:26.45 among whom were Mary Magdalene" 00:26:26.48\00:26:28.34 and by the way you just met Mary Magdalene in John 12. 00:26:28.37\00:26:31.64 "Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, 00:26:31.67\00:26:34.57 and Salome, who also followed Him 00:26:34.60\00:26:37.80 and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, 00:26:37.83\00:26:39.93 and many other women 00:26:39.96\00:26:42.74 who came up with Jesus to Jerusalem." 00:26:42.77\00:26:45.35 Isn't that amazing? 00:26:45.38\00:26:46.74 Many other women followed Him 00:26:46.77\00:26:49.71 and ministered to Him. 00:26:49.74\00:26:52.80 Which means this, leave her alone, 00:26:52.83\00:26:55.06 is not some isolated little moment in defense of a woman. 00:26:55.09\00:27:00.36 Obviously, Jesus gladly, 00:27:00.39\00:27:03.18 publicly received the ministry of all these women. 00:27:03.21\00:27:09.85 Leave her alone. 00:27:09.88\00:27:12.67 I mean you think what's just happened, 00:27:12.70\00:27:13.96 come on think, what has just happened, 00:27:13.99\00:27:15.46 when He in stern voice commands. 00:27:15.49\00:27:22.13 I mean, here is this woman, 00:27:22.16\00:27:25.12 she's just quietly entered into a man's world 00:27:25.15\00:27:28.70 has humbly brought it Christ her own expression 00:27:28.73\00:27:31.51 of love and devotion 00:27:31.54\00:27:33.60 when suddenly noticed, for her outer bounds expression, 00:27:33.63\00:27:36.70 a certain man leaps up on that act 00:27:36.73\00:27:38.24 and loudly declares this is a misguided waste of effort 00:27:38.27\00:27:41.84 and a misappropriation of devotion. 00:27:41.87\00:27:45.28 And all-- have you noticed 00:27:45.31\00:27:46.50 all it takes is for one man to protest 00:27:46.53\00:27:49.42 and soon other man to prove their male credentials 00:27:49.45\00:27:52.64 jump on the band wagon until all of them 00:27:52.67\00:27:56.65 would drive this woman from their circle 00:27:56.68\00:28:00.25 until another man interrupts, 00:28:00.28\00:28:02.81 leave her alone, leave her alone. 00:28:02.84\00:28:09.39 Now remember, this is the same Jesus, 00:28:09.42\00:28:11.78 this is the same Mary 00:28:11.81\00:28:13.30 and from the same little village of Bethany. 00:28:13.33\00:28:16.66 Some months earlier you remember the story 00:28:16.69\00:28:18.26 when Martha comes into her living room 00:28:18.29\00:28:19.47 she's all huff and buff. 00:28:19.50\00:28:20.85 Hey come on Jesus what is up with this, 00:28:20.88\00:28:22.37 you just led my sister sitting here with the all are you men 00:28:22.40\00:28:25.24 when I got work to do in the kitchen. 00:28:25.27\00:28:26.43 Would You command her to come back to the kitchen with me? 00:28:26.46\00:28:30.65 Remember that story? 00:28:30.68\00:28:34.53 How did Jesus respond? 00:28:34.56\00:28:37.17 Mary, Martha is right. 00:28:37.20\00:28:39.73 You need to remember your place in this world, 00:28:39.76\00:28:42.00 standing here with all the men and Me. 00:28:42.03\00:28:44.20 It's in the kitchen where you belong, 00:28:44.23\00:28:45.52 go, go, go, girl. 00:28:45.55\00:28:48.34 How do you respond, look at this, 00:28:48.37\00:28:49.40 Luke 10, Luke Chapter 10, 00:28:49.43\00:28:53.38 "And Jesus answered and said to her," 00:28:53.41\00:28:56.59 when He repeats her name its 'cause He really loves you. 00:28:56.62\00:29:00.10 "Martha, Martha, you are worried 00:29:00.13\00:29:03.48 and troubled about many things. 00:29:03.51\00:29:05.87 But one thing is needed," girl 00:29:05.90\00:29:08.16 "and Mary has chosen that good part, 00:29:08.19\00:29:10.54 which will not be taken away from her." 00:29:10.57\00:29:14.08 Martha, Martha, its okay, 00:29:14.11\00:29:16.74 for Mary to be here 00:29:16.77\00:29:18.37 because she's chosen the better part. 00:29:18.40\00:29:21.85 She's doing it out of love for Me. 00:29:21.88\00:29:24.32 The very same observance 00:29:24.35\00:29:30.45 as that Saturday night banquet. 00:29:30.48\00:29:31.92 She's doing it out of love for me. 00:29:31.95\00:29:36.20 May she want it, doesn't it? 00:29:36.23\00:29:38.36 I makes me wonder, 00:29:38.39\00:29:39.42 where would Jesus stand today 00:29:39.45\00:29:43.27 in a church that is opened its doors of ministry 00:29:43.30\00:29:46.44 to all except women? 00:29:46.47\00:29:52.79 Oh, it's true, there are designated ministries 00:29:52.82\00:29:55.19 in the church that women are applauded to doing. 00:29:55.22\00:29:58.78 But no pastoral ministry is she allowed to perform 00:29:58.81\00:30:02.19 with the same recognition of spiritual authority 00:30:02.22\00:30:04.86 as her male counterparts enjoy. 00:30:04.89\00:30:09.05 Namely, the sacred and ecclesiastical recognition 00:30:09.08\00:30:13.48 that God has already called and gifted the individual. 00:30:13.51\00:30:18.67 A calling with spiritual authority 00:30:18.70\00:30:20.34 and leadership recognized universally in the church 00:30:20.37\00:30:23.76 by something called ordination. 00:30:23.79\00:30:29.46 Ordination does not confer giftedness. 00:30:29.49\00:30:33.52 Ordination recognizes it's already there 00:30:33.55\00:30:37.31 and we see the fruit. 00:30:37.34\00:30:41.57 No Mary, no, no for that you need to leave this circle. 00:30:41.60\00:30:46.31 For God's word declares that this responsibility, 00:30:46.34\00:30:49.56 a spiritual authority belongs only to man, I'm sorry. 00:30:49.59\00:30:54.30 It does. 00:30:54.33\00:30:56.18 I just read an article 00:31:00.10\00:31:01.74 in defense of that men only position about ordination 00:31:01.77\00:31:05.97 and bless the writers are. 00:31:06.00\00:31:07.49 I have to wonder, 00:31:07.52\00:31:09.21 why, what is so clear to me in scripture 00:31:09.24\00:31:11.33 is not clear to the writer. 00:31:11.36\00:31:14.12 For example, the writer, listen, 00:31:14.15\00:31:15.27 the writer suggested that when the Bible declares 00:31:15.30\00:31:17.57 that the elder or that would be the pastor 00:31:17.60\00:31:19.73 is to be the husband of one wife 00:31:19.76\00:31:22.56 that clearly means that only men can hold 00:31:22.59\00:31:25.44 that position of ordained spiritual leadership. 00:31:25.47\00:31:29.71 But that's not how I read the text. 00:31:29.74\00:31:31.85 Let's look at the text put it on the screen, 00:31:31.88\00:31:33.68 1 Timothy 3:2 Paul writing, 00:31:33.71\00:31:36.70 "A bishop" and that could be an elder. 00:31:36.73\00:31:39.95 "A bishop then must be blameless, 00:31:39.98\00:31:43.22 the husband of one wife, 00:31:43.25\00:31:45.26 temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, 00:31:45.29\00:31:47.47 hospitable, able to teach." 00:31:47.50\00:31:50.49 But listen, I know we're required 00:31:50.52\00:31:52.18 that text to be read as meaning exclusively male. 00:31:52.21\00:31:56.03 Then I required Jesus instructions 00:31:56.06\00:31:57.89 to His disciple ministries to be read 00:31:57.92\00:31:59.69 as meaning exclusively the way He phrases it. 00:31:59.72\00:32:02.82 Here's what He says to a group of men 00:32:02.85\00:32:04.75 who have just been ordained to the gospel ministry. 00:32:04.78\00:32:07.72 I want you to see this, 00:32:07.75\00:32:09.28 Matthew Chapter 10 we'll pick it up in verse 9. 00:32:09.31\00:32:11.23 He's getting right to send them out on their first pastorate. 00:32:11.26\00:32:13.64 "Provide" He says hey "Provide neither gold nor silver 00:32:13.67\00:32:16.96 nor copper in your money belts" 00:32:16.99\00:32:19.85 now I am not thinking man I got to get that wallet, 00:32:19.88\00:32:21.66 go on and got to find the money belt, 00:32:21.69\00:32:23.16 I'm not thinking that. 00:32:23.19\00:32:24.22 Verse 10, "nor" don't get a bag, 00:32:24.25\00:32:27.30 don't get a suitcase for your journey, 00:32:27.33\00:32:29.15 you don't need "two tunics nor sandals" 00:32:29.18\00:32:32.18 just the one's you have on all you need 00:32:32.21\00:32:34.18 "nor staffs for a worker is worthy of his food." 00:32:34.21\00:32:39.24 Now ladies and gentlemen, 00:32:39.27\00:32:40.69 surely Jesus detailed instructions to His disciples, 00:32:40.72\00:32:45.05 do not mean that today 00:32:45.08\00:32:46.75 we're not allowed to take suitcases 00:32:46.78\00:32:48.27 when we pastors travel. 00:32:48.30\00:32:49.80 And we are not allowed to take an extra change of clothes 00:32:49.83\00:32:52.27 or an extra pair of sandals, we should only wear sandals. 00:32:52.30\00:32:56.38 He's not saying you got to have a staff or no staff, you see? 00:32:56.41\00:33:01.34 Oh, come on Dwight, please. 00:33:01.37\00:33:03.75 Jesus is speaking to specific man 00:33:03.78\00:33:06.15 in a specific country and culture at a specific time, 00:33:06.18\00:33:09.14 you're stretching the scripture 00:33:09.17\00:33:10.53 to make Him require sandals and staffs 00:33:10.56\00:33:12.90 and no suitcases of His ministers 2,000 years later. 00:33:12.93\00:33:18.54 Which my friend, is precisely the point. 00:33:18.57\00:33:23.84 We listen to Ancient Scripture, 00:33:23.87\00:33:25.43 even the red letter words of Jesus 00:33:25.46\00:33:27.82 and we interpret the principles behind those words 00:33:27.85\00:33:30.30 for our living and ministering today. 00:33:30.33\00:33:31.66 We make the application, you know, what Jesus is saying. 00:33:31.69\00:33:33.92 I believe He's saying, we have to travel, 00:33:33.95\00:33:35.37 we had a travel light, we have to travel simply. 00:33:35.40\00:33:40.06 Who is being interpreted simply and clearly 00:33:40.09\00:33:42.04 means that the church has to-- 00:33:42.07\00:33:45.58 how did Paul put it? 00:33:45.61\00:33:47.33 He gave His council about ordaining 00:33:47.36\00:33:49.64 those who are the husband of one wife. 00:33:49.67\00:33:55.83 But what is He saying 00:33:55.86\00:33:57.48 if He's not admonishing the church 00:33:57.51\00:34:00.65 to ordain those knows 00:34:00.68\00:34:02.37 who are martially faithful to their spouses? 00:34:02.40\00:34:06.95 Hey, look no, no, He say, no, no, Dwight, you can't do that. 00:34:06.98\00:34:09.08 That has to stay a little. 00:34:09.11\00:34:10.14 Jesus He's figurative this is literal. 00:34:10.17\00:34:13.03 Okay, let's say its stays literal, 00:34:13.06\00:34:15.32 think about the implications if it remains literal. 00:34:15.35\00:34:17.69 If these words are to be literal command 00:34:17.72\00:34:19.52 for all time the husband of one wife 00:34:19.55\00:34:22.96 then there can be no single ministers. 00:34:22.99\00:34:26.15 No single ministers. 00:34:26.18\00:34:27.23 Well, how can you be a single, you have to have a wife. 00:34:27.26\00:34:30.18 There can be no remarried ministers, 00:34:30.21\00:34:32.98 no divorced ministers because now you have two wives. 00:34:33.01\00:34:38.10 And number three, 00:34:38.13\00:34:39.70 they could be no childless ministers 00:34:39.73\00:34:41.10 because the very next line says he-- 00:34:41.13\00:34:42.84 he must be very good at raising his children. 00:34:42.87\00:34:46.36 So you can't be a childless pastor. 00:34:46.39\00:34:50.14 Oh, come on, Dwight, nobody wishes to push 00:34:50.17\00:34:51.82 that single phrase that literally. 00:34:51.85\00:34:53.43 Everybody reinterprets it to fit our society today 00:34:53.46\00:34:56.60 as we do what Jesus command to His disciples 00:34:56.63\00:34:59.06 but for some reason 00:34:59.09\00:35:01.35 and I'm trying to figure this out for some reason 00:35:01.38\00:35:03.79 those who do not believe 00:35:03.82\00:35:05.26 that women should be granted the same spiritual authority 00:35:05.29\00:35:08.30 for their calling the gospel ministry 00:35:08.33\00:35:10.30 they're allowed a free interpretation 00:35:10.33\00:35:12.04 of phrase for singles. 00:35:12.07\00:35:13.31 Oh yeah, you can have single, 00:35:13.34\00:35:14.37 remarriage, oh yeah, childless, no problem. 00:35:14.40\00:35:17.04 But inexplicably they suddenly demand 00:35:17.07\00:35:19.91 a strict literal interpretation for gender. 00:35:19.94\00:35:22.57 Oh no, you have to be a man. 00:35:22.60\00:35:25.29 Three times you said we could interpret it away 00:35:25.32\00:35:27.75 but this one you can't. 00:35:27.78\00:35:32.16 Almost humbly, personally, 00:35:32.19\00:35:37.64 disagree with them 00:35:37.67\00:35:40.21 for I believe, I believe that 00:35:40.24\00:35:43.74 they are inconsistently interpreting scripture 00:35:43.77\00:35:47.65 to fit their beliefs, 00:35:47.68\00:35:50.12 and not allowing Holy Scripture 00:35:50.15\00:35:52.49 to dictate their beliefs. 00:35:52.52\00:35:54.95 Amen. 00:35:54.98\00:35:57.12 Yeah, but come on Dwight, please, 00:35:57.15\00:35:59.78 doesn't the Bible command women to keep silent in church 00:35:59.81\00:36:02.10 and do not exercise spiritual authority over men 00:36:02.13\00:36:04.80 because Eve was created second and sin first. 00:36:04.83\00:36:09.74 That's a good question. 00:36:09.77\00:36:11.58 Lets' reread what God very plainly declared to the, 00:36:11.61\00:36:15.20 to our first parents Adam and Eve 00:36:15.23\00:36:17.31 after their moral meltdown in the Garden of Eden. 00:36:17.34\00:36:20.36 Let's put Genesis 3 on the screen here, 00:36:20.39\00:36:22.72 "To the woman" this is the Creator, 00:36:22.75\00:36:24.10 this is the pre-incarnate Christ by the way, 00:36:24.13\00:36:26.46 the same one that was there with Mary. 00:36:26.49\00:36:29.58 "To the woman He said 00:36:29.61\00:36:32.11 'I will greatly multiply your sorrow and you conception. 00:36:32.14\00:36:34.99 In pain you shall bring forth children. 00:36:35.02\00:36:37.59 Your desire shall be for your husband, 00:36:37.62\00:36:39.67 and he shall rule over you.'" 00:36:39.70\00:36:42.76 Now sadly, many have read God's words 00:36:42.79\00:36:45.45 that mean that all women 00:36:45.48\00:36:46.91 are to be subordinated to all men. 00:36:46.94\00:36:49.93 But that is simply not what God is saying. 00:36:49.96\00:36:53.83 In fact, the Creator, a very clearly 00:36:53.86\00:36:56.04 the Creator literally in the Hebrew, 00:36:56.07\00:36:57.74 here's what He saying. 00:36:57.77\00:36:58.80 And your desire shall be for your men. 00:36:58.83\00:37:02.78 You know we're for husband there its 'is.' 00:37:02.81\00:37:05.00 Your desire is for your man 00:37:05.03\00:37:08.24 which means this was never a Carte Blanche decoration 00:37:08.27\00:37:11.57 that all women would be subordinated to all men 00:37:11.60\00:37:15.18 in or out of the church, that's not there. 00:37:15.21\00:37:19.87 You know, what this is? 00:37:19.90\00:37:20.98 This is a post fall chain of command, 00:37:21.01\00:37:23.44 divine spiritual leadership prescription 00:37:23.47\00:37:26.52 dealing with husbands and wives. 00:37:26.55\00:37:30.44 That's what it is which by the way 00:37:30.47\00:37:33.22 hardly diminishes the wives role in marriage. 00:37:33.25\00:37:35.96 I mean, let me give you two reasons why. 00:37:35.99\00:37:37.50 If you've ever read Proverbs 31 the ideal wife oh mercy, 00:37:37.53\00:37:41.57 look at her financial leadership, 00:37:41.60\00:37:43.33 look at her familiar leadership, 00:37:43.36\00:37:44.96 look at her managerial skill, 00:37:44.99\00:37:46.41 she buys and sells property 00:37:46.44\00:37:47.87 without consultation with anybody. 00:37:47.90\00:37:50.98 You can read Proverb 31 and say well, 00:37:51.01\00:37:53.74 there is subjugations, it's not about subjugation at all. 00:37:53.77\00:37:56.94 In fact with Proverbs 31 00:37:56.97\00:37:58.23 go ahead and have Ephesians 6 00:37:58.26\00:37:59.94 where Paul takes that Genesis 3 00:37:59.97\00:38:02.31 principle and it applies and He says, 00:38:02.34\00:38:03.75 listen this is really how it works, guys. 00:38:03.78\00:38:07.75 Both husband and wife are to submit to each other. 00:38:07.78\00:38:10.71 He describes mutual submission. 00:38:10.74\00:38:14.36 But the husband is to-- 00:38:14.39\00:38:15.42 somebody's got to take the first step 00:38:15.45\00:38:16.68 so it is the husbands responsibility 00:38:16.71\00:38:19.16 in the example of Christ self sacrificing 00:38:19.19\00:38:22.45 love at the Cavalry it's the husband's example 00:38:22.48\00:38:24.79 to initiate repentance. 00:38:24.82\00:38:26.48 I was wrong, to offer forgiveness, 00:38:26.51\00:38:29.37 to break the logjam. 00:38:29.40\00:38:32.28 Paul is carefully, carefully protecting, 00:38:32.31\00:38:38.96 this wall that God has placed around 00:38:38.99\00:38:41.81 husband and wife in the human home. 00:38:41.84\00:38:46.74 But he is not making a statement, 00:38:46.77\00:38:48.88 just as God was not about women and men on this planet. 00:38:48.91\00:38:52.39 Now here's that line, 00:38:52.42\00:38:55.27 you need to see the line that's in question. 00:38:55.30\00:38:58.01 Some people read this line for the first time, 00:38:58.04\00:38:59.41 they'll say, whoa, what is that? 00:38:59.44\00:39:01.51 Its Paul writing saying Paul, 00:39:01.54\00:39:03.03 "Let a woman learn in silence with all submission." 00:39:03.06\00:39:06.37 1 Timothy 2:11, here comes verse 12 00:39:06.40\00:39:08.33 "And I do not permit a woman to teach 00:39:08.36\00:39:10.57 or to have authority over a man, 00:39:10.60\00:39:12.51 but to be in silence." 00:39:12.54\00:39:14.81 Does that all women are subjugated 00:39:14.84\00:39:16.93 to all men for all time, 00:39:16.96\00:39:19.11 hardly in the church? Not at all. 00:39:19.14\00:39:22.45 Let me show you something 00:39:22.48\00:39:23.71 that word for man aner that word for women goo-nay. 00:39:23.74\00:39:28.21 Those words can be translated 00:39:28.24\00:39:29.51 either man, husband or woman, wife. 00:39:29.54\00:39:34.73 Which means Paul's admonition can accurately read 00:39:34.76\00:39:39.63 let a wife in church learn in silence. 00:39:39.66\00:39:42.60 For I do not permit a wife to teach 00:39:42.63\00:39:44.36 or to have her authority over her husband, 00:39:44.39\00:39:47.38 which being interpreting means Paul is carefully protecting, 00:39:47.41\00:39:49.82 Gods protecting wall around marriage and home, 00:39:49.85\00:39:51.49 He's no where declaring 00:39:51.52\00:39:52.82 all women are subordinated to all men in the church 00:39:52.85\00:39:55.35 and only men are allowed spiritual authority. 00:39:55.38\00:39:57.59 He's not saying that at all. 00:39:57.62\00:39:59.12 He's talking what the Creator was talking about. 00:39:59.15\00:40:01.80 Husband and wife relationship, 00:40:01.83\00:40:05.02 post fall somebody has to take the initiative. 00:40:05.05\00:40:11.58 Moreover, moreover the position 00:40:11.61\00:40:18.45 that men only men are to be ordained to the Gospel ministry 00:40:18.48\00:40:22.85 and thus be granted spiritual authority in the church, 00:40:22.88\00:40:26.05 which I believe the Bible does not support, 00:40:26.08\00:40:28.93 that position does not supported biblically. 00:40:28.96\00:40:31.99 But isn't that position particularly 00:40:32.02\00:40:34.82 incongruous in a denomination 00:40:34.85\00:40:38.23 that was founded by a woman 00:40:38.26\00:40:44.11 and some male colleagues. 00:40:44.14\00:40:47.61 What's up with that? 00:40:47.64\00:40:49.61 The most prolific American author of either gender, 00:40:54.69\00:40:58.81 the third most translated human being 00:40:58.84\00:41:01.04 in the history of the earth, a wife, 00:41:01.07\00:41:05.36 a mother, a visionary, a leader, 00:41:05.39\00:41:09.83 raised up the most expansive protested 00:41:09.86\00:41:13.39 educational system on earth. 00:41:13.42\00:41:15.71 She raised up the most 00:41:15.74\00:41:16.77 expansive protestant health system on earth, 00:41:16.80\00:41:18.99 she raised up the most expansive 00:41:19.02\00:41:20.77 Christian missionary movement on earth, 00:41:20.80\00:41:23.44 isn't it a bit incongruous 00:41:23.47\00:41:28.41 that some within this community of faith 00:41:28.44\00:41:31.91 which recognizes the spiritual authority that 00:41:31.94\00:41:33.82 little five foot, two inch woman named Ellen White. 00:41:33.85\00:41:36.54 Isn't it incongruous that some 00:41:36.57\00:41:38.42 who revere her authority would continue to insist 00:41:38.45\00:41:42.89 that women should not exercise spiritual authority over men? 00:41:42.92\00:41:47.33 To me that is just one astounding anomaly. 00:41:47.36\00:41:51.04 How do you explain it? 00:41:51.07\00:41:56.83 And by the way any little comment about well, 00:41:56.86\00:42:01.44 women prophets or women 00:42:01.47\00:42:02.57 who exercise the prophetic gift has spiritual authority 00:42:02.60\00:42:05.00 that rest of the women don't, that's just plain war games. 00:42:05.03\00:42:10.52 Isn't it something, 00:42:10.55\00:42:13.41 especially when, listen to this, especially 00:42:13.44\00:42:15.34 when not a single word form her 00:42:15.37\00:42:19.17 ever prohibiting the church from coming to a prayerful, 00:42:19.20\00:42:22.76 careful, biblical, understanding 00:42:22.79\00:42:25.31 that is utterly consistent 00:42:25.34\00:42:26.63 with the Bible witness to conclude 00:42:26.66\00:42:29.12 that women who are called by God today, 00:42:29.15\00:42:31.95 share with man the same spiritual authority 00:42:31.98\00:42:34.77 and accountability of Gospel ministry 00:42:34.80\00:42:37.09 as recognized by ordination. 00:42:37.12\00:42:38.85 Not a single word saying, 00:42:38.88\00:42:40.59 oh, no, no, no, you can't go down that path. 00:42:40.62\00:42:43.67 Not a word. 00:42:43.70\00:42:45.42 There is not a single word and I read widely trust me. 00:42:45.45\00:42:50.67 There is not a single word ever suggesting 00:42:50.70\00:42:54.06 that such a prayerful, careful, 00:42:54.09\00:42:55.59 biblical decision would be out of harmony with God's will 00:42:55.62\00:42:59.09 for His people at this time in history. 00:42:59.12\00:43:02.85 In fact to the contrary, 00:43:02.88\00:43:04.71 I got to share this with you. 00:43:04.74\00:43:05.92 I came across these words in Acts of the Apostles 00:43:05.95\00:43:08.50 while preparing my GYC sermon on Acts 10 and 11. 00:43:08.53\00:43:12.20 You remember Acts, you remember the story behind Acts 10 and 11. 00:43:12.23\00:43:14.70 You remember Cornelius the Roman Centurion 00:43:14.73\00:43:17.98 and remember Peter, 00:43:18.01\00:43:19.51 who's never, he's never put a scandal in a Gentile home. 00:43:19.54\00:43:22.95 He would never on the pain of death 00:43:22.98\00:43:24.87 he would never do it. 00:43:24.90\00:43:25.94 And you remember an angel shows up to Cornelius' 00:43:25.97\00:43:27.59 and says hey, go get a guy name Peter, he's over in Joppa 00:43:27.62\00:43:29.93 and always spiritual at appearances by the way 00:43:29.96\00:43:32.20 go with these people who have come. 00:43:32.23\00:43:33.98 You remember that story so Peter finds himself doing 00:43:34.01\00:43:35.90 what he's never done at all in his life. 00:43:35.93\00:43:37.82 He's put his sandals in a Gentile, 00:43:37.85\00:43:40.56 a Pagan home and then he begins to preach. 00:43:40.59\00:43:43.91 Jesus and God doesn't even wait for Peter to finish his sermon. 00:43:43.94\00:43:46.79 Something in the middle of sermon, boom, 00:43:46.82\00:43:48.63 the Holy Spirit is poured out on these Gentile Pagan seekers. 00:43:48.66\00:43:54.71 Wow, so Peter says, baptize them all. 00:43:54.74\00:44:00.22 But oh boy, when he gets back to Jerusalem, 00:44:00.25\00:44:02.99 he's in hot water and they call him in on the red carpet 00:44:03.02\00:44:06.55 and they said what were you thinking 00:44:06.58\00:44:09.84 teaching in a Gentile's home. 00:44:09.87\00:44:12.26 And so in chapter 11, Peter is-- 00:44:12.29\00:44:14.21 listen, let me tell you something guys, whoa, 00:44:14.24\00:44:16.49 here's what happened and he goes to the whole story. 00:44:16.52\00:44:18.68 He gets down to the end of the story 00:44:18.71\00:44:20.46 and I want you to listen very carefully now, 00:44:20.49\00:44:22.88 to what he says to the hierarchy in Jerusalem. 00:44:22.91\00:44:26.71 And as he says, I'm there preaching it away 00:44:26.74\00:44:29.44 "And as I began to speak the Holy Spirit fell on them, 00:44:29.47\00:44:33.15 as up on us at the beginning." 00:44:33.18\00:44:36.37 Verse, "If therefore God gave them 00:44:36.40\00:44:40.13 the same gift as He gave us 00:44:40.16\00:44:42.51 what we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:44:42.54\00:44:44.90 who was I that I could withstand God?" 00:44:44.93\00:44:48.58 I mean they have the same gift. 00:44:48.61\00:44:51.20 I didn't realize that but they have the same gift, 00:44:51.23\00:44:54.64 how can I say, no, only me with that gift counts not you. 00:44:54.67\00:44:59.97 I couldn't do it. Brethren, I could not do it. 00:45:00.00\00:45:05.04 The wall separating Jews and Gentiles 00:45:05.07\00:45:08.07 began its last crumble 00:45:08.10\00:45:13.19 in that incident, amazing. 00:45:13.22\00:45:17.68 I mean, that's what Peter has just said 00:45:17.71\00:45:19.19 that's the question for the church today. 00:45:19.22\00:45:21.87 If God has poured out His spirit on young women 00:45:21.90\00:45:23.91 and not so young women 00:45:23.94\00:45:24.97 who are ministering just as Mary did to the Lord Jesus 00:45:25.00\00:45:27.99 and the fruits of their ministry are dramatically clear 00:45:28.02\00:45:30.88 to all who observed their ministry 00:45:30.91\00:45:33.69 if therefore God gave them the same gift 00:45:33.72\00:45:35.93 He gave us then who are we as men to stand in the way. 00:45:35.96\00:45:40.19 How in the name of Christ can we defend this wall 00:45:47.74\00:45:51.54 when our leaders are circumnavigating 00:45:51.57\00:45:53.83 this plan of these days begging the church of God 00:45:53.86\00:45:56.48 to plea for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:45:56.51\00:45:59.25 and I join them and I believe we need that outpouring 00:45:59.28\00:46:02.70 but how can we stand before God 00:46:02.73\00:46:05.43 and beg for that infilling 00:46:05.46\00:46:07.92 when there's wall that's separating us? 00:46:07.95\00:46:11.89 The wall will have to comedown 00:46:11.92\00:46:14.06 before the Spirit can comedown. 00:46:14.09\00:46:17.56 You can't come down with a wall blocking your way. 00:46:17.59\00:46:20.44 It's not my fault God says, you have to help Me. 00:46:20.47\00:46:24.45 Get this wall down then I'll come. 00:46:24.48\00:46:30.91 So we'll keep praying, we'll keep praying. 00:46:30.94\00:46:36.48 But we have the answer to our prayers in our own hands. 00:46:36.51\00:46:41.04 Now here's that line from Ellen White, 00:46:45.57\00:46:47.15 I want you to catch this. 00:46:47.18\00:46:49.61 This is her inspired commentary, 00:46:49.64\00:46:50.98 at the moment chapter 11 comes to an end. 00:46:51.01\00:46:54.87 Put it on the screen for you, Acts of the Apostles. 00:46:54.90\00:46:57.46 "Thus without controversy, prejudice was broken down, 00:46:57.49\00:47:01.27 the exclusiveness established 00:47:01.30\00:47:03.00 by the custom of ages was abandoned." 00:47:03.03\00:47:06.60 By the way those italics are mine. 00:47:06.63\00:47:09.23 "The exclusiveness established 00:47:09.26\00:47:11.08 by the custom of ages was abandoned." 00:47:11.11\00:47:15.35 We've always done it this way. 00:47:15.38\00:47:17.47 We've always through the ages done it this way, 00:47:17.50\00:47:20.13 but when the Holy Spirit came down 00:47:20.16\00:47:22.45 the exclusiveness established 00:47:22.48\00:47:24.15 by the custom of ages was abandoned 00:47:24.18\00:47:26.62 and the way was opened for the gospel 00:47:26.65\00:47:28.17 to be proclaimed to the Gentiles. 00:47:28.20\00:47:30.94 Isn't that amazing? 00:47:30.97\00:47:32.84 It took that wall to come down 00:47:32.87\00:47:34.79 to open up the gospel to be proclaimed more widely, 00:47:34.82\00:47:37.67 more effectively, more powerfully, than ever before. 00:47:37.70\00:47:42.80 But did you catch that line? 00:47:42.83\00:47:44.40 The exclusiveness established 00:47:44.43\00:47:46.28 by the custom of ages was abandoned. 00:47:46.31\00:47:51.36 And ladies and gentlemen, 00:47:51.39\00:47:52.85 isn't it time for the wall 00:47:52.88\00:47:57.22 to come down in the gospel ministry. 00:47:57.25\00:48:01.14 For how can God possibly bless 00:48:04.81\00:48:07.46 the exclusiveness established 00:48:07.49\00:48:10.06 by the custom of ages? 00:48:10.09\00:48:15.54 Look, women might be a mystery to Stephen Hawking 00:48:15.57\00:48:19.85 but they are no mystery to God. 00:48:19.88\00:48:22.53 For a women our one half 00:48:22.56\00:48:25.74 of His strategic plan for the human race 00:48:25.77\00:48:28.58 and women are one half of His will 00:48:28.61\00:48:33.01 for the gospel ministry. 00:48:33.04\00:48:35.93 Amen. Amen. 00:48:35.96\00:48:37.93 Let's pray. 00:48:40.85\00:48:42.30 Oh, Jesus, defender of the defenseless, 00:48:45.92\00:48:51.26 remover of the wall, 00:48:51.29\00:48:55.47 isn't it time for the church 00:48:55.50\00:48:59.30 to become just like You? 00:48:59.33\00:49:02.29 And my head is still bowed in prayer. 00:49:06.58\00:49:09.91 I need to make an appeal here. 00:49:09.94\00:49:12.84 And this appeal is only for the women who are here, 00:49:12.87\00:49:17.80 who are watching, who are listening. 00:49:17.83\00:49:22.07 Three appeals, number one, ladies, 00:49:22.10\00:49:26.81 would you be willing to offer your life to Jesus 00:49:26.84\00:49:30.10 like Mary in gratitude for His loving sacrifice on your behalf? 00:49:30.13\00:49:37.47 Would you? 00:49:37.50\00:49:38.83 Already I know the answer to that question. 00:49:38.86\00:49:40.82 Of course you do. 00:49:40.85\00:49:42.81 Here's appeal number two, 00:49:42.84\00:49:44.88 would you be willing to offer your career 00:49:44.91\00:49:48.76 as a ministry for Him? 00:49:48.79\00:49:52.33 I had a young woman come in to my office after first church. 00:49:52.36\00:49:56.58 She said "I am taking science here." 00:49:56.61\00:50:00.17 We talked, it doesn't matter your career, 00:50:00.20\00:50:05.08 it doesn't matter you are major here 00:50:05.11\00:50:06.49 God has led you to chose that, I believe. 00:50:06.52\00:50:10.55 But would you be willing offer that major, 00:50:10.58\00:50:13.06 that career to come or career you are already in 00:50:13.09\00:50:16.72 as a lawyer, physician, a homemaker, a wife. 00:50:16.75\00:50:22.41 Would you be willing to offer 00:50:22.44\00:50:25.25 you're career to Jesus 00:50:25.28\00:50:28.95 so that it might be a daily ministry for Him? 00:50:28.98\00:50:34.62 And then appeal number three. 00:50:34.65\00:50:38.18 I hesitate with this one. 00:50:38.21\00:50:40.97 I hesitate to ask you to offer your life for gospel ministry 00:50:41.00\00:50:46.98 because the truth is 00:50:47.01\00:50:49.20 not many young women are being placed. 00:50:49.23\00:50:54.05 And in some places the door is not open at all. 00:50:54.08\00:51:00.41 But I cannot-- not invite you to respond to Christ call 00:51:00.44\00:51:05.07 whatever the spirit means for you. 00:51:05.10\00:51:11.40 And so with these three appeals in your heart, 00:51:11.43\00:51:15.49 I'd like to ask the women 00:51:15.52\00:51:17.34 who are here if you are willing to respond 00:51:17.37\00:51:19.47 to one of those three appeals 00:51:19.50\00:51:21.77 to stand to your feet, 00:51:21.80\00:51:24.67 just as Mary stepped into that room 00:51:24.70\00:51:27.89 in front of all those men 00:51:27.92\00:51:31.53 to demonstrate her devotion to Jesus. 00:51:31.56\00:51:34.03 I'd like to invite you to stand to your feet 00:51:34.06\00:51:39.66 and by standing, you say to Jesus, 00:51:39.69\00:51:43.78 I'm available to You, 00:51:43.81\00:51:49.08 I'm available to You. 00:51:49.11\00:51:53.92 God bless you. 00:52:01.98\00:52:04.17 Oh, Jesus, they stand before You, 00:52:04.20\00:52:08.94 You who stood up for them long ago 00:52:08.97\00:52:13.12 they stand up for You now. 00:52:13.15\00:52:14.87 Jesus, see You her devotion, 00:52:14.90\00:52:18.31 see You her passion, see You her calling, 00:52:18.34\00:52:21.62 see You her commitment, and take her. 00:52:21.65\00:52:27.95 Once you did with Mary turn the world 00:52:27.98\00:52:30.68 upside down for her ministry. 00:52:30.71\00:52:36.99 Oh, Jesus, we all would stand before You, 00:52:37.02\00:52:41.80 we all offer our lives to You. 00:52:41.83\00:52:45.91 And so I wish to stand with these women 00:52:45.94\00:52:47.82 and I invite my brothers here 00:52:47.85\00:52:49.97 if they wish to stand with them 00:52:50.00\00:52:52.46 to stand with me now. 00:52:52.49\00:52:55.14 So we are all standing, the whole family 00:52:55.17\00:52:56.96 of God is standing. 00:52:56.99\00:52:58.99 We are saying whatever You want Jesus, 00:52:59.02\00:53:02.70 use us anyway you wish, the hour has come 00:53:02.73\00:53:07.63 for the Spirit to be outpoured 00:53:07.66\00:53:10.02 and we wish to be a part 00:53:10.05\00:53:16.01 of that mighty final gift. 00:53:16.04\00:53:21.90 Seal all of us Jesus, seal us for the journey ahead 00:53:21.93\00:53:25.98 and may You be glorified please. 00:53:26.01\00:53:29.27 May You be glorified in Your name we pray, amen. 00:53:29.30\00:53:35.56 I want to sing one stanza, 00:53:35.59\00:53:36.69 pull the hymn in the lot in front of you. 00:53:36.72\00:53:37.75 Just one stanza of this beautiful, 00:53:37.78\00:53:39.79 "I will follow Thee, my Savior, 00:53:39.82\00:53:41.74 Wheresoe'er my lot may be." 00:53:41.77\00:53:44.35 Its 6:23. 00:53:44.38\00:53:45.54 Take the hymn aloud 6:23 just one stanza 00:53:45.57\00:53:49.59 and then we leave worship to the world that awaits us.
