Just the prayer to be praying as we begin a new year. 00:10:24.02\00:10:27.42 Can you believe this boys and girls, 00:10:27.46\00:10:28.96 the New Year is here, 00:10:28.99\00:10:30.39 but I have a hard time remembering 00:10:30.43\00:10:32.33 New Year the number. 00:10:32.36\00:10:34.06 Does anybody know the number of this New Year 00:10:34.10\00:10:36.56 'cause it's kind of hard to remember, 00:10:36.60\00:10:38.87 what would the number be? 00:10:38.90\00:10:42.77 That's it, you got it. 00:10:42.80\00:10:44.14 Thanks for the reminder 2016 already. 00:10:44.17\00:10:48.74 And I got the perfect story for us, 00:10:48.78\00:10:50.45 from my friend. 00:10:50.48\00:10:52.55 Ooh, we have to be quiet. 00:10:52.58\00:10:54.58 We have to be quiet and now wave at each other 00:10:54.62\00:10:57.69 during the children story. 00:10:57.72\00:10:59.89 My friend Milke send me the story. 00:10:59.92\00:11:01.76 This happened just a few days ago. 00:11:01.79\00:11:03.63 Yep, Britain was so excited, 00:11:03.66\00:11:06.36 the United Kingdom they finally, 00:11:06.39\00:11:09.36 what a joyful movement, 00:11:09.40\00:11:10.73 they were sending an astronaut just last month in December, 00:11:10.77\00:11:13.44 they sent an astronaut into outer space 00:11:13.47\00:11:16.74 on a Russian rocket from Kazakhstan, 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.58 his name Timothy Peake. 00:11:20.61\00:11:24.31 And it was perfectly timed 00:11:24.35\00:11:25.68 because right as the rocket reached the height 00:11:25.71\00:11:28.38 it made contact with the international space station 00:11:28.42\00:11:32.42 ISS. 00:11:32.45\00:11:34.46 Where scientists are living in that space station 00:11:34.49\00:11:37.06 and they are doing research and test. 00:11:37.09\00:11:39.86 Oh, and he was so excited, 00:11:39.89\00:11:41.23 let's see a picture of Timothy Peake, 00:11:41.26\00:11:42.60 42 years old, come on, let's see that famous. 00:11:42.63\00:11:44.97 Oh, there he is, doesn't he look happy? 00:11:45.00\00:11:47.44 Look at he's floating, 00:11:47.47\00:11:48.80 he's just floating in outer space 00:11:48.84\00:11:51.81 and you know what? 00:11:51.84\00:11:53.17 He was, you know, what really had him excited 00:11:53.21\00:11:54.81 though was that he on Christmas Eve 00:11:54.84\00:11:56.91 just a few days ago, he said, 00:11:56.95\00:11:58.28 "I'm gonna call home to my family, 00:11:58.31\00:12:01.08 and surprise and they don't know this, 00:12:01.12\00:12:02.65 I'm gonna call them on Christmas Eve 00:12:02.68\00:12:04.52 from outer space." 00:12:04.55\00:12:05.89 In that picture he is traveling five miles a second, 00:12:05.92\00:12:08.52 every 90 minutes he goes around the earth 00:12:08.56\00:12:10.59 in that International Space Station. 00:12:10.63\00:12:13.66 So he said, "Okay, Christmas Eve." 00:12:13.70\00:12:16.10 Were you here for Christmas Eve? 00:12:16.13\00:12:17.83 Were you here in Berrien Springs? 00:12:17.87\00:12:19.20 You went somewhere, okay. 00:12:19.23\00:12:20.57 Wherever you were, he was farther. 00:12:20.60\00:12:22.10 So he's there Christmas Eve, he said, 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.21 "Okay, give me that big space phone." 00:12:24.24\00:12:25.71 So they gave him the space phone, 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.84 he picked it up, 00:12:27.88\00:12:29.21 he said, "All right now, I got to dial my home phone." 00:12:29.24\00:12:31.15 I don't know if there's extra area codes 00:12:34.28\00:12:36.18 when you dial from outer space but... 00:12:36.22\00:12:39.52 Tuck the number in, ring and ring. 00:12:39.55\00:12:42.19 Who is it? 00:12:42.22\00:12:43.56 This gonna be it, They're gonna be so surprised. 00:12:43.59\00:12:46.09 "Hello," It was a woman's voice. 00:12:46.13\00:12:49.46 "Hello." 00:12:49.50\00:12:52.30 He said, wait a minute, that's not my wife. 00:12:52.33\00:12:55.74 "Hello." 00:12:55.77\00:12:57.57 He said, that's not my mother. 00:12:57.61\00:12:58.94 That's not my mother-in-law. 00:12:58.97\00:13:01.68 Who is that? 00:13:01.71\00:13:03.31 He was so flustered at that moment. 00:13:03.35\00:13:06.51 He said, the first thing that came to his mind he said, 00:13:06.55\00:13:09.35 "Hello, is this Planet Earth?" 00:13:09.38\00:13:16.52 It was, was a little 79 year old lady 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.69 in England named Beverly Barker, 00:13:19.73\00:13:23.50 who thought, you know what, this is my neighbors again. 00:13:23.53\00:13:25.83 They've been in the pub. 00:13:25.87\00:13:27.20 They're pulling a little Christmas Eve trick on me. 00:13:27.24\00:13:29.27 He, what does he want to know is this Planet Earth? 00:13:29.30\00:13:30.84 I got the right answer for him 00:13:30.87\00:13:32.21 so she said to him, "No, it is not." 00:13:32.24\00:13:36.14 And then she hung up the phone. 00:13:36.18\00:13:40.22 Poor embarrassed Timothy Peake. 00:13:40.25\00:13:42.25 He quickly went to his Twitter 00:13:42.28\00:13:44.72 and he said, "I'm gonna tweet this message to Earth 00:13:44.75\00:13:46.76 and so let's put a picture of it on the screen 00:13:46.79\00:13:48.79 he tweeted to earth. 00:13:48.82\00:13:50.16 "I'd like to apologize to the lady 00:13:50.19\00:13:51.76 I just called by mistake 00:13:51.79\00:13:53.43 saying, "Hello, is this planet Earth?" 00:13:53.46\00:13:55.33 That was not a prank call, just a wrong number." 00:13:55.36\00:14:00.20 Hey, listen, if you guys ever going to space, 00:14:00.24\00:14:02.20 if time should last long enough and you become an astronaut, 00:14:02.24\00:14:04.17 here's a rule about calling from space 00:14:04.21\00:14:05.64 just get this in your mind, 00:14:05.67\00:14:07.31 always remember your home phone number 00:14:07.34\00:14:10.08 and dial the right one. 00:14:10.11\00:14:13.01 Hey somebody else lives in outer space. 00:14:13.05\00:14:14.38 Who lives in outer space? 00:14:14.42\00:14:15.75 What's his name? 00:14:15.78\00:14:17.12 Jesus and how do we day for a while, 00:31:51.97\00:31:54.11 so sure you get through it in a couple weeks. 00:31:54.14\00:31:57.95 I want to share with you a line that comes from this book, 00:31:57.98\00:32:01.18 I put the words on the screen, 00:32:01.22\00:32:02.55 and I'm gonna read from my little marked up copy here. 00:32:02.58\00:32:05.35 Steps to Christ, page 35, 00:32:05.39\00:32:08.09 speaking of an intellectual community as we are, 00:32:08.12\00:32:11.79 listen, "Many accept an intellectual religion." 00:32:11.83\00:32:15.43 All right we got it all figured out, 00:32:15.46\00:32:16.80 we got it up here, we got it. 00:32:16.83\00:32:18.87 "Many accept an intellectual religion, 00:32:18.90\00:32:20.80 a form of godliness, when the heart is not cleansed. 00:32:20.84\00:32:25.17 Let it be your prayer, 00:32:25.21\00:32:26.54 this New Year create in me a clean heart, 00:32:26.57\00:32:28.64 O God, and renew a right spirit within me." 00:32:28.68\00:32:31.78 Boy at the foot of the cross what... 00:32:31.81\00:32:33.52 could there be a greater day than today 00:32:33.55\00:32:35.55 to pray this prayer together at the foot of Calvary 00:32:35.58\00:32:38.22 as we will in just a moment. 00:32:38.25\00:32:40.02 Create in me a clean heart, 00:32:40.06\00:32:41.39 God I don't want to think about 2015, 00:32:41.42\00:32:43.53 I don't want to remember, cleanse my memory, 00:32:43.56\00:32:45.89 scrub my soul God, 00:32:45.93\00:32:48.06 I have to start this new year clean. 00:32:48.10\00:32:50.33 I can't carry that baggage into 2016. 00:32:50.37\00:32:57.91 Why not? 00:32:57.94\00:32:59.94 It's gospel, wash me, I'll start over. 00:32:59.97\00:33:04.21 Ellen White goes on, 00:33:04.25\00:33:05.58 "Deal truly with your own soul." 00:33:05.61\00:33:08.25 Don't play games 00:33:08.28\00:33:09.62 you know the truth and so does God. 00:33:09.65\00:33:11.82 So talk to him honestly, 00:33:11.85\00:33:13.79 don't put on this happy face to God, here I am again, 00:33:13.82\00:33:17.03 your perfect little boy or girl. 00:33:17.06\00:33:18.73 No, you're not and God knows it and so you. 00:33:18.76\00:33:21.86 "Deal truly with your own soul. 00:33:21.90\00:33:23.50 Be as earnest, as persistent, 00:33:23.53\00:33:25.50 as you would be if your mortal life were at stake. 00:33:25.53\00:33:28.27 This is a matter to be settled between God and your own soul, 00:33:28.30\00:33:31.27 settled for eternity. 00:33:31.31\00:33:34.14 A supposed hope, and nothing more, 00:33:34.18\00:33:37.38 will prove your ruin." 00:33:37.41\00:33:40.92 You say, hey, Dwight, oh, time out. 00:33:40.95\00:33:42.65 Wow, you said, 00:33:42.68\00:33:44.02 there's gonna be charmed by his matchless attractions." 00:33:44.05\00:33:46.45 This is sounding very negative to me. 00:33:46.49\00:33:48.66 No, time out for you, time out, time out. 00:33:48.69\00:33:52.36 How can the good news possibly be good news, 00:33:52.39\00:33:55.60 if I don't know the bad news first, 00:33:55.63\00:33:57.83 if I don't admit the bad news first? 00:33:57.87\00:33:59.97 Until I say, "I am the worst sinner on this planet, 00:34:00.00\00:34:02.37 and mean it." 00:34:02.40\00:34:04.97 Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinner, so. 00:34:05.01\00:34:08.38 I don't need that. 00:34:08.41\00:34:10.21 You have to need it, to plead it. 00:34:10.25\00:34:14.48 And when you plead it, you get it. 00:34:14.52\00:34:18.69 That's the way it works. 00:34:18.72\00:34:21.06 Paul for the rest of us life pled for God to cover his past. 00:34:21.09\00:34:24.43 Because his past, shame... 00:34:24.46\00:34:25.99 was a shaming past, 00:34:26.03\00:34:28.46 forgetting those things which are behind. 00:34:28.50\00:34:30.47 He kept saying, "I got to forget what's behind, 00:34:30.50\00:34:33.03 but I'm the worst sinner and he couldn't forget." 00:34:33.07\00:34:38.21 Wow. 00:34:38.24\00:34:42.54 Reminds me of that sentence by the way, 00:34:42.58\00:34:44.25 on page 30 same chapter. 00:34:44.28\00:34:46.75 I put it on the screen for you here. 00:34:46.78\00:34:49.75 The drunkard, 00:34:49.78\00:34:51.32 okay, this is the person 00:34:51.35\00:34:52.69 hooked on prescription drugs, all right. 00:34:52.72\00:34:54.36 So that she keeps going to the doctor 00:34:54.39\00:34:55.89 getting more and more prescriptions, 00:34:55.92\00:34:57.26 she doesn't have to have this much, 00:34:57.29\00:34:58.63 but she's hooked now. 00:34:58.66\00:35:00.00 This guy is hooked on prescription drugs. 00:35:00.03\00:35:01.53 Okay, so the drug addict. 00:35:01.56\00:35:02.90 This could be the junkie in the inner city, 00:35:02.93\00:35:04.50 or could be the respectable, 00:35:04.53\00:35:05.93 you know, middle class drug addict 00:35:05.97\00:35:07.50 because of prescription medicine 00:35:07.54\00:35:08.87 or could be an alcoholic. 00:35:08.90\00:35:10.24 "The drunkard is despised..." 00:35:10.27\00:35:11.81 Yeah, around here... 00:35:11.84\00:35:13.34 "And is told that her sin, his sin will exclude him, 00:35:13.38\00:35:16.95 will exclude her from heaven..." 00:35:16.98\00:35:18.58 All the while, watch this, wow brother, 00:35:18.61\00:35:21.18 "Pride, selfishness, and covetousness 00:35:21.22\00:35:24.25 too often go unrebuked." 00:35:24.29\00:35:26.45 Not a word, I don't, I'm not sorry for those, 00:35:26.49\00:35:29.52 because you know thank God, I'm not like her. 00:35:29.56\00:35:33.50 Too often they go unrebuked but keep going, keep reading, 00:35:33.53\00:35:37.40 "These are sins that are especially..." 00:35:37.43\00:35:39.93 Did you get the word especially? 00:35:39.97\00:35:41.30 "Especially offensive to God, 00:35:41.34\00:35:44.21 for pride, covetousness and selfishness 00:35:44.24\00:35:46.24 are contrary to the benevolence of his character, 00:35:46.27\00:35:48.58 to that unselfish love 00:35:48.61\00:35:50.51 which is the very atmosphere of heaven." 00:35:50.55\00:35:54.22 I'm telling you what? 00:35:54.25\00:35:55.78 Just began with one of those three 00:35:55.82\00:35:57.75 I really have a struggle with 00:35:57.79\00:35:59.25 Probably with all three that I don't even know about, 00:35:59.29\00:36:01.72 but at least two of those three. 00:36:01.76\00:36:04.39 No, maybe three. 00:36:04.43\00:36:07.16 What were the three again by the way? 00:36:07.20\00:36:08.53 Pride, covetousness, selfishness, 00:36:12.33\00:36:14.24 the selfishness thing, I really struggled with it. 00:36:14.27\00:36:17.54 I'm a selfish person by nature. 00:36:17.57\00:36:19.74 I found that the Lord reminded me again this week. 00:36:19.77\00:36:22.08 So we were flying, we were flying home, 00:36:30.59\00:36:32.15 we had a wonderful time, that week in Argentina, 00:36:32.19\00:36:35.56 then a week in Southern California, 00:36:35.59\00:36:37.09 renewed with my mother, 00:36:37.13\00:36:38.46 and the whole tribe, the Nelson tribe, 00:36:38.49\00:36:40.30 we did had a glorious time. 00:36:40.33\00:36:41.66 So Karen and I got up 3:30 in the morning. 00:36:41.70\00:36:44.00 Left 4:45 race to L.A.X. 00:36:44.03\00:36:46.43 when the traffic was survivable. 00:36:46.47\00:36:49.20 We had an 8:50 flight, got right up there to check in, 00:36:49.24\00:36:52.21 and it said canceled. 00:36:52.24\00:36:54.98 It's Wednesday. 00:36:55.01\00:36:56.48 Oh, man. 00:36:56.51\00:36:59.85 Go to the service counter, have a long line, 00:36:59.88\00:37:02.82 we're halfway back. 00:37:02.85\00:37:05.22 Come to find out when we got to the front of the line, 00:37:05.25\00:37:06.69 hallelujah, they provided another plane, 00:37:06.72\00:37:08.76 the Dreamliner 787, 00:37:08.79\00:37:10.49 to fly, the people that were stranded by this cancel flight. 00:37:10.53\00:37:14.66 And so anyway we have a five hour wait now. 00:37:14.70\00:37:18.53 So we're just sitting around reading, 00:37:18.57\00:37:20.67 and grab a bite to eat, 00:37:20.70\00:37:22.04 and then I saw on the monitor Wow! 00:37:22.07\00:37:24.21 I got upgraded to business first class. 00:37:24.24\00:37:29.98 Then I said, "No, no, 00:37:30.01\00:37:31.68 you know I arrange this trip 00:37:31.71\00:37:33.05 so I fly with Karen, I'll sit with her." 00:37:33.08\00:37:37.62 I was hoping that would be kind of... 00:37:37.65\00:37:40.92 because I was going to enjoy just that brief moment. 00:37:40.96\00:37:44.63 Seriously, so I said, I'm not gonna worry about 00:37:44.66\00:37:46.73 somebody else can take my seat. 00:37:46.76\00:37:48.10 I will stick in the one I'm inside 22A. 00:37:48.13\00:37:50.10 So we go on to the plane. 00:37:50.13\00:37:51.67 There's this shriveled up little lady sitting in 22A 00:37:51.70\00:37:54.90 I say, "Hey, let me see your, let me see your boarding pass." 00:37:54.94\00:37:58.54 I said, "How could that be?" 00:37:58.57\00:38:00.38 So Karen looks at me, and she says, "You know what? 00:38:00.41\00:38:03.48 Why don't you take the seat in first class? 00:38:03.51\00:38:06.01 I'll sit back here." 00:38:06.05\00:38:07.78 Yes. 00:38:07.82\00:38:09.72 Okay, I'll check it out. 00:38:09.75\00:38:11.79 Anyway I went up there 00:38:11.82\00:38:13.15 the Dreamliner's the reclining seat, 00:38:13.19\00:38:15.12 I'll take it. 00:38:15.16\00:38:18.49 Now here's where the Lord got me. 00:38:18.53\00:38:20.96 So when the flight is over, 00:38:21.00\00:38:22.33 Karen and I now in O'Hare 00:38:22.36\00:38:23.70 racing to catch this southern flight. 00:38:23.73\00:38:25.90 She says, "You know, that little lady 00:38:25.93\00:38:27.27 that sat on the plane?" 00:38:27.30\00:38:29.34 She got to the airport at 5:30 in the morning, 00:38:29.37\00:38:31.74 her family dropped her off. 00:38:31.77\00:38:33.48 She comes and finds out that it's been canceled, 00:38:33.51\00:38:36.08 she has no money not a dollar bill to her name." 00:38:36.11\00:38:39.75 I'm thinking what family would send 00:38:39.78\00:38:41.35 a little mother without a dollar bill. 00:38:41.38\00:38:44.55 So she, Karen said, 00:38:44.59\00:38:45.92 I offered to buy the woman lunch 00:38:45.95\00:38:47.29 and she said, "No, no, I don't want, 00:38:47.32\00:38:48.92 I'm okay, I'm okay." 00:38:48.96\00:38:50.36 But when we landed she said, "You're gonna have some money," 00:38:50.39\00:38:52.26 and my wife, the most unselfish person I know on this planet 00:38:52.29\00:38:55.23 gives cash to her and says, "Buy yourself supper." 00:38:55.26\00:38:59.90 And right then, I said, 00:38:59.93\00:39:02.24 "You, 00:39:02.27\00:39:06.14 if you had offered that woman your seat. 00:39:06.17\00:39:09.54 She would have gotten a meal 00:39:09.58\00:39:11.78 with china and silver for free." 00:39:11.81\00:39:16.38 Said you little pig you ate it. 00:39:16.42\00:39:18.12 I'm telling you guys, I'm not a drunkard, 00:39:22.72\00:39:24.89 hey, I'm not hooked on prescription drugs. 00:39:24.93\00:39:28.16 I don't even drink wine. 00:39:28.20\00:39:29.80 I'm not an alcoholic. 00:39:29.83\00:39:31.93 Yeah, I know God says, 00:39:31.97\00:39:33.37 "It's pride, covetousness, and selfishness, 00:39:33.40\00:39:35.87 that I'm worried about with you." 00:39:35.90\00:39:37.41 You see the point. 00:39:37.44\00:39:39.14 An intellectual community still needs Calvary. 00:39:39.17\00:39:41.58 That's the point. 00:39:41.61\00:39:43.31 We need the cross. 00:39:43.35\00:39:45.05 I need the cross. 00:39:45.08\00:39:47.38 I am the worst sinner Paul says, 00:39:47.42\00:39:48.92 Christ Jesus came in the world to save sinners 00:39:48.95\00:39:50.35 of whom I'm the worst. 00:39:50.39\00:39:51.75 But there's good news for intellectual sinners. 00:39:51.79\00:39:53.56 Keep reading. 00:39:53.59\00:39:54.92 As you see the enormity... 00:39:54.96\00:39:56.99 get my place here, 00:39:57.03\00:39:58.36 "As you see the enormity of sin, 00:39:58.39\00:39:59.73 as you see yourself as you really are..." 00:39:59.76\00:40:01.70 Oh, boy, those moments come. 00:40:01.73\00:40:03.47 "Do not give up to despair. 00:40:03.50\00:40:05.20 It was sinners that Christ Jesus came to save. 00:40:05.23\00:40:07.64 We have not to reconcile God to us, 00:40:07.67\00:40:09.54 but - O, but wondrous, o wondrous love!" 00:40:09.57\00:40:12.14 This is so beautiful. 00:40:12.17\00:40:13.74 "God in Christ is 'reconciling the world unto Himself.' 00:40:13.78\00:40:16.75 He is wooing by His tender love 00:40:16.78\00:40:18.28 the hearts of His erring children. 00:40:18.31\00:40:19.65 No earthly parent could be as patient 00:40:19.68\00:40:22.28 with the faults and mistakes of his children, 00:40:22.32\00:40:24.55 as is God with those He seeks to save. 00:40:24.59\00:40:26.89 No one could plead more tenderly with a transgressor. 00:40:26.92\00:40:29.82 No human lips ever poured out more tender entreaties 00:40:29.86\00:40:33.06 to the wanderer than does He." 00:40:33.09\00:40:37.10 My mother, God bless her, 87 years of age, 00:40:37.13\00:40:40.87 in this family and had the cousins there, 00:40:40.90\00:40:43.14 the siblings, the spouses and my momma, 00:40:43.17\00:40:45.77 just sitting here drinking it all and smiling, 00:40:45.81\00:40:48.21 she is bright mind, interject now and then. 00:40:48.24\00:40:50.65 Sounds like a mother to me. 00:40:53.82\00:40:56.45 A mother who took me aside before I left Tuesday night, 00:40:56.48\00:40:59.39 said, Dwight, I need to say something I noticed about you. 00:40:59.42\00:41:02.59 Apparently even at 87 mothers can do this. 00:41:02.62\00:41:05.56 There ought to be a cutoff where they just, 00:41:05.59\00:41:07.76 just be thankful I mean. 00:41:07.80\00:41:09.13 No, I receive that, 00:41:11.60\00:41:12.93 I received that in my heart is the gift of love. 00:41:12.97\00:41:17.61 And that's God, it says, it's me. 00:41:17.64\00:41:19.71 I'm not mother of yours. 00:41:19.74\00:41:21.31 I met Daddy of yours you never had.
