I believe we got here 00:02:36.95\00:02:40.42 by molecules-to-man evolution, that was taught at State School, 00:02:40.46\00:02:43.93 I left school when I was 16... became a car mechanic 00:02:43.96\00:02:47.13 and I was a... 00:02:47.16\00:02:49.70 I would have called myself an Atheist back then, 00:02:49.73\00:02:51.87 it would have been my late teens... early 20s... 00:02:51.90\00:02:54.00 I called myself an Atheist until my mid-20s 00:02:54.04\00:02:56.14 when I had an encounter with God 00:02:56.17\00:02:58.47 that changed my life forever, really 00:02:58.51\00:03:00.71 and then I started to pay a little bit of attention 00:03:00.74\00:03:03.75 to a Christian friend that I did have... 00:03:03.78\00:03:05.81 a friend who had... was raised a Christian 00:03:05.85\00:03:07.88 and he knew some things about the Bible 00:03:07.95\00:03:09.82 and he would share those things with me. 00:03:09.85\00:03:11.65 Rosemary: But he walked away from it as a young person. 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.62 Peter: He had drifted into the world 00:03:13.66\00:03:14.99 and he was living in the same sort of situation as me 00:03:15.02\00:03:18.56 but he remembered those things that the Bible had talked about 00:03:18.59\00:03:22.83 and once I had had my encounter with God, 00:03:22.86\00:03:25.93 then, I was more... I was open then to saying, 00:03:25.97\00:03:29.74 "Well, what does he have to say?" 00:03:29.77\00:03:31.77 And once we started looking into the Bible, 00:03:31.81\00:03:34.61 there were so many things in the Bible 00:03:34.64\00:03:35.98 that I didn't know were there 00:03:36.01\00:03:37.38 or I had no idea would be there, 00:03:37.41\00:03:38.85 but I found the Bible to be the most amazing book 00:03:38.88\00:03:43.72 that I've ever encountered 00:03:43.75\00:03:45.39 and it's not really like any other book, 00:03:45.42\00:03:47.62 it's not... you know, I've read other story books 00:03:47.66\00:03:50.03 and so forth and... but this is a... 00:03:50.09\00:03:52.49 it's a living book 00:03:52.56\00:03:53.93 and I mean that in every... every respect. 00:03:53.96\00:03:56.53 John: I like the aspect... that's a historical book also 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.43 dealing from the very beginning of mankind 00:03:59.47\00:04:02.34 and following through. 00:04:02.37\00:04:03.71 The great changes that took place in the lives of people 00:04:03.74\00:04:07.38 when they came to know God. 00:04:07.41\00:04:08.74 Rosemary: When you say that this is a living book, 00:04:08.78\00:04:10.81 it's relevant for every age... 00:04:10.85\00:04:14.98 every age of whether you're a child... 00:04:15.02\00:04:17.95 whether you're middle age... older person, whatever, 00:04:17.99\00:04:20.96 but also every age through this earth's history 00:04:20.99\00:04:24.96 that every generation in every culture... 00:04:24.99\00:04:27.60 this is relevant... 00:04:27.63\00:04:29.53 it's living because it's never out of date. 00:04:29.56\00:04:32.43 Peter: Yeah, I mean, that's one of the most remarkable things 00:04:32.47\00:04:34.77 about it... in fact, when I was in my early days, 00:04:34.80\00:04:37.14 when I was reading in the Bible, I was thinking, 00:04:37.17\00:04:39.47 "Hey, they had tax collectors too. " 00:04:39.51\00:04:41.18 Rosemary: Laughter. 00:04:41.21\00:04:42.54 Peter: You know, just think little bits and pieces 00:04:42.58\00:04:45.31 where you read and you think, 00:04:45.35\00:04:46.68 "You know, this could really have been written 00:04:46.72\00:04:48.25 yesterday for me... " 00:04:48.28\00:04:49.62 the counsel that's there... 00:04:49.65\00:04:51.92 the... the... the fact that it speaks to the human heart... 00:04:51.95\00:04:55.72 I think that's the thing, 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.33 is... you know, we can look down through history 00:04:57.36\00:05:01.30 and I visited the Middle East on a number of different occasions 00:05:01.33\00:05:05.70 and there are different cultures and from the Biblical culture, 00:05:05.73\00:05:10.07 we are separated by thousands of miles, 00:05:10.11\00:05:12.77 we're separated by the cultural differences 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.41 as well as the... the time space of thousands of years 00:05:15.44\00:05:18.58 and at the same time, I think, one of the... 00:05:18.61\00:05:22.68 the beauties of the Bible, 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.09 one of the things that makes it a living Book 00:05:24.12\00:05:26.12 is that it speaks to the human heart... 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.42 it speaks to the human mind in the 21 century... 00:05:28.46\00:05:31.96 as much as it did to the first century 00:05:31.99\00:05:34.46 and in fact, I would say that for our generation, 00:05:34.50\00:05:37.70 it's even more relevant than it ever has been 00:05:37.73\00:05:40.94 because there's so much of the Bible 00:05:40.97\00:05:42.77 that has been fulfilled in terms of prophecy 00:05:42.80\00:05:46.78 that has been fulfilled that gives us just even greater 00:05:46.81\00:05:49.14 confidence in its message. 00:05:49.18\00:05:50.51 Rosemary: But a lot of it is also written for the end time. 00:05:50.55\00:05:52.91 Peter: Yeah. 00:05:52.95\00:05:54.28 Rosemary: So, there's a lot of relevance to the time 00:05:54.32\00:05:56.58 in which we're living 00:05:56.62\00:05:57.95 actually written in the Bible specifically for us. 00:05:57.99\00:06:01.62 Peter: Yeah, so, you know, I was thinking about 00:06:01.66\00:06:05.46 Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.23 had made a statement in regard to the Coronavirus Crisis, 00:06:08.26\00:06:11.33 and he had said that there's no rule book for this. 00:06:11.37\00:06:15.50 We're in unchartered territory 00:06:15.54\00:06:18.61 and I thought about those comments as he made them and 00:06:18.64\00:06:21.91 I thought about the fact that before I knew God... 00:06:21.94\00:06:25.18 before I knew the Bible... 00:06:25.21\00:06:26.55 I would have had that whole approach myself, 00:06:26.58\00:06:30.65 I don't know what to do... 00:06:30.69\00:06:32.72 I don't know what the future holds... 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.79 I don't know what's ahead of us... how should we react? 00:06:34.82\00:06:36.73 in this new environment that we find ourselves in? 00:06:36.76\00:06:39.89 And... but as far as God is concerned, 00:06:39.93\00:06:43.83 it's not uncharted territory... 00:06:43.87\00:06:45.67 there is no unchartered territory 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.44 as far as God is concerned because he has charted it all 00:06:47.47\00:06:50.41 and what He's done for us is... He's revealed a little bit 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.38 of that wisdom and knowledge that we need 00:06:53.41\00:06:55.74 in order to understand where we are... 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.05 where we've come from... where we are 00:06:58.08\00:07:00.28 and what's ahead of us so that we can be best prepared 00:07:00.32\00:07:03.59 for His soon coming which is really... 00:07:03.62\00:07:06.49 His goal is to ensure that we're ready for when He returns. 00:07:06.52\00:07:09.79 Rosemary: And a lot of people in the world 00:07:09.82\00:07:11.69 turn to things like Astrology... Clairvoyance 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.50 and all those sorts of things to try and find out 00:07:13.53\00:07:15.60 what's going to happen in the future 00:07:15.63\00:07:16.97 because they are so worried about it, 00:07:17.00\00:07:18.33 but God has given us His Word 00:07:18.37\00:07:21.67 where He's revealed some of these things to us 00:07:21.70\00:07:24.84 so that we don't have to worry about that... 00:07:24.87\00:07:27.94 we don't have to know what's going to happen in the future, 00:07:27.98\00:07:31.65 we've got a basic understanding and we just trust God for it 00:07:31.68\00:07:34.98 so, we don't have to get caught up 00:07:35.02\00:07:37.22 in all these things, "Oh, what's going to happen... 00:07:37.25\00:07:38.89 what's going to happen... the calamities... " 00:07:38.95\00:07:40.32 because God has said... Jesus... well, Jesus said in John 14:27, 00:07:40.36\00:07:46.39 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: 00:07:46.43\00:07:49.76 not as the world giveth, give I unto you. " 00:07:49.80\00:07:51.43 So, He's given us an internal peace 00:07:51.47\00:07:53.57 through His Word 00:07:53.60\00:07:55.24 that we don't have to be going to astrologers and... and things 00:07:55.27\00:07:57.94 to find out what's going to happen. 00:07:57.97\00:07:59.31 Peter: That's right and I think one of that... 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.14 that was one of the most impressive things to me. 00:08:01.21\00:08:03.24 In fact, I studied one of the prophecies in the Bible... 00:08:03.28\00:08:06.85 a prophecy that many of your Viewers may know... 00:08:06.88\00:08:10.15 it's in Daniel chapter 2. 00:08:10.19\00:08:11.52 Once I understood that prophecy 00:08:11.55\00:08:12.95 and I understood what God had revealed there, 00:08:12.99\00:08:15.02 it was so convincing to me that I said, 00:08:15.09\00:08:17.99 "That is a Divine Book... " 00:08:18.03\00:08:19.43 that is... that's no ordinary book, right? 00:08:19.46\00:08:22.20 Who can do that?" 00:08:22.23\00:08:23.57 And so, prophecy has been 00:08:23.60\00:08:26.87 very comforting to me because I know that there's a God 00:08:26.94\00:08:30.24 in charge of the universe, 00:08:30.27\00:08:31.61 I know there's a God Who knows where we live now 00:08:31.64\00:08:34.38 and where He's planning to take us to... 00:08:34.44\00:08:36.98 there's another verse that we're... 00:08:37.01\00:08:38.55 we weren't planning to study but I just want to throw it in 00:08:38.61\00:08:42.22 because of the comment that you made 00:08:42.28\00:08:43.62 that we can have peace of mind 00:08:43.65\00:08:45.35 and I think that's one of the purposes of this Program 00:08:45.39\00:08:48.52 I think today is to... 00:08:48.56\00:08:50.03 to let people know that it's not just this information 00:08:50.06\00:08:53.70 about the future in the Bible, 00:08:53.73\00:08:55.06 but it's that we can have peace with God 00:08:55.10\00:08:57.23 because He shared that information with us. 00:08:57.27\00:08:59.77 He wants us to know that you can trust Me... 00:08:59.80\00:09:02.30 that you can have peace in Me... 00:09:02.34\00:09:03.97 and it's that verse in John 16:33 that says, 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.94 "In this world, you will have tribulation, 00:09:06.98\00:09:09.88 but in Me you can have peace... 00:09:09.91\00:09:13.01 these things I've told you that in Me you can have peace... 00:09:13.05\00:09:15.85 in this world you'll have tribulation 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.29 but be of good cheer, for I've overcome the world. " 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.85 John: It's a lovely text. 00:09:19.89\00:09:21.22 Peter: It's a fantastic text, I think. 00:09:21.26\00:09:22.82 Rosemary: Despite the tribulation. 00:09:22.86\00:09:24.19 Peter: Correct. 00:09:24.23\00:09:25.56 John: Well, Peter, we brought you here 00:09:25.59\00:09:27.16 talking about the daily bread 00:09:27.20\00:09:28.53 so we'll let you lead out with that 00:09:28.56\00:09:33.54 and Rosy's got a text to read 00:09:33.57\00:09:35.84 and then we can launch into telling the people 00:09:35.87\00:09:38.91 exactly about the Word of God and what it can do for you. 00:09:38.94\00:09:41.71 Rosemary: Well, do you want to lead us into it? 00:09:41.74\00:09:43.41 Peter: Well, I was just... yeah, I think, there was... 00:09:43.45\00:09:47.78 I was thinking about the last time I took a flight, 00:09:47.85\00:09:51.45 you know, most of us have been on an airplane, I guess, 00:09:51.49\00:09:55.16 and not recently of course because of the Coronavirus 00:09:55.19\00:09:58.19 but... and who knows when the next flight will be... 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.16 maybe our next flight will be flying to heaven with Jesus 00:10:01.20\00:10:04.10 but you know, you get on the flight 00:10:04.13\00:10:06.37 and you have the Cabin Crew 00:10:06.40\00:10:09.64 go through the Flight Safety Card. 00:10:09.70\00:10:11.84 John: That's right. 00:10:11.87\00:10:13.21 Peter: And you know... 00:10:13.24\00:10:14.61 Rosemary: Just in case. 00:10:14.64\00:10:16.14 Peter: Just in case, that's right... 00:10:16.18\00:10:17.51 and, you know, they go through it every flight 00:10:17.55\00:10:20.02 no matter how many flights you've been on 00:10:20.05\00:10:21.85 they will go through that process 00:10:21.88\00:10:24.19 and, of course, if you've been on a few flights, 00:10:24.22\00:10:26.79 you sort of... "Yeah, I've seen this before" 00:10:26.82\00:10:29.22 and maybe you don't take as much notice 00:10:29.26\00:10:31.83 as you're not as focused perhaps. 00:10:31.89\00:10:34.60 Rosemary: So, they try to get more creative 00:10:34.63\00:10:36.00 on how to get your attention. 00:10:36.03\00:10:38.23 Peter: Yeah, they try to get your attention and so forth 00:10:38.30\00:10:40.07 but they go through that Safety Card 00:10:40.10\00:10:41.70 and I guess, most of us don't take that much attention to it 00:10:41.74\00:10:44.47 if you've flown before 00:10:44.51\00:10:45.84 and then, of course, when you take off, 00:10:45.87\00:10:47.68 if in the flight, then you start to experience some turbulence... 00:10:47.71\00:10:51.25 maybe you try to pull out that Flight Safety Card 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.78 and all of a sudden, it becomes essential reading 00:10:53.82\00:10:56.28 because you want to know where the exits are 00:10:56.35\00:10:57.99 and you know... you want to know what kind of plane it is 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.72 and what the configuration is and all of that kind of thing 00:11:00.76\00:11:03.43 and I think in a way what the current crisis does 00:11:03.46\00:11:11.00 is it focuses the mind... 00:11:11.03\00:11:12.37 it helps us to... to think about 00:11:12.40\00:11:14.94 what's really important and what's less important in life 00:11:14.97\00:11:17.74 you know, there's so many things that have been closed down 00:11:17.77\00:11:20.51 and what it enables us to do, 00:11:20.54\00:11:23.68 you know, there's been a turbulence 00:11:23.71\00:11:25.05 as we're going along 00:11:25.08\00:11:27.05 and we want to look at what's the essential reading... 00:11:27.12\00:11:30.19 what's the counsel... what's the guidance... 00:11:30.22\00:11:33.56 what's the important information 00:11:33.59\00:11:35.69 that I need to know while I'm on this journey. 00:11:35.72\00:11:38.99 Rosemary: That's right, so, I'm going to read 00:11:39.03\00:11:43.26 Psalm 119 verse 105 is one of my assignments, 00:11:43.30\00:11:47.10 I really... this is one of the verses I learnt long time ago 00:11:47.14\00:11:50.01 it's, "They Word is a lamp unto my feet, 00:11:50.04\00:11:54.74 and a light unto my path... " 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.71 and that's a wonderful description. 00:11:57.75\00:12:01.08 Peter: Yeah, I sometimes look at this verse and I think 00:12:01.12\00:12:05.72 if I were in a dark place... if you're in a dark alley... 00:12:05.75\00:12:10.33 maybe you've got to make your way home at night 00:12:10.36\00:12:12.89 and maybe you've gotten lost 00:12:12.93\00:12:15.00 or you're not sure of the road... 00:12:15.03\00:12:16.50 it's maybe unfamiliar to you 00:12:16.56\00:12:17.90 and you're going down in this dark alley, 00:12:17.93\00:12:19.27 it would sure help if you had a torch in your hand. 00:12:19.30\00:12:21.40 Rosemary: Yeah. John: It certainly would. 00:12:21.44\00:12:23.07 Peter: You know what I'm saying? It's like... 00:12:23.10\00:12:24.64 Rosemary: Or you had your phone with a torch on it. 00:12:24.67\00:12:26.17 Peter: Well, that's right... that's right 00:12:26.21\00:12:27.54 and that... that... most of us have that 00:12:27.58\00:12:30.15 so... but it makes a big difference when there's light 00:12:30.18\00:12:33.72 and you know, a lot of the city streets in the main... 00:12:33.75\00:12:37.05 the center of town... they have the streets lit up 00:12:37.09\00:12:40.26 and it's in order to try and make them safer, I guess, 00:12:40.29\00:12:43.59 where there is less danger lurking 00:12:43.63\00:12:46.09 when... when you can see where you're going 00:12:46.13\00:12:48.30 and others can see you 00:12:48.33\00:12:49.96 and I think in a world of... 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.20 that's spiritually dark at the moment 00:12:52.23\00:12:55.04 what we need is a light and the Bible provides that, 00:12:55.07\00:12:57.97 it is a lamp to my feet... 00:12:58.01\00:12:59.34 it actually helps me to know where I'm going. 00:12:59.37\00:13:01.48 There's actually a companion verse to this 00:13:01.51\00:13:03.68 that I want to look at that's... we hadn't planned for... 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.61 I'm going to turn to there now, it's 2nd Peter chapter 1 00:13:06.65\00:13:09.45 in the New Testament 00:13:09.48\00:13:10.82 that has the same idea about light and darkness 00:13:10.85\00:13:13.59 and I just want to turn there, turn to Peter... my namesake... 00:13:13.66\00:13:18.39 and... 00:13:18.43\00:13:20.00 Rosemary: What's the verse number? 00:13:20.03\00:13:21.53 Peter: It is 2nd Peter chapter 1 00:13:21.56\00:13:22.96 and we're going to pick it up in verse 19. 00:13:23.00\00:13:26.13 2nd Peter chapter 1 verse 19. 00:13:26.17\00:13:29.74 and Peter is writing here to the church at large 00:13:29.77\00:13:32.17 and he says, "And so we have 00:13:32.21\00:13:34.78 the prophetic word confirmed, 00:13:34.81\00:13:37.35 which you do well to heed as a light that shines 00:13:37.38\00:13:40.95 in a dark place, 00:13:40.98\00:13:43.02 until the day dawns 00:13:43.05\00:13:45.02 and the morning star rises in your hearts... " 00:13:45.05\00:13:46.99 and he goes on and we can read more 00:13:47.06\00:13:48.46 but He's basically saying 00:13:48.49\00:13:51.79 about the prophetic passages in the Bible 00:13:51.83\00:13:55.23 that have come to pass 00:13:55.26\00:13:58.13 and I guess, Peter, in part... 00:13:58.17\00:14:00.40 he's thinking about the fact that 00:14:00.44\00:14:02.57 all through the Old Testament the Messiah was predicted... 00:14:02.60\00:14:05.54 He was prophesied to come and Jesus has come 00:14:05.57\00:14:08.64 and he was one of His disciples 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.08 and he's saying, "We've seen Him... 00:14:10.15\00:14:11.48 we've seen Him alive after the resurrection... " 00:14:11.51\00:14:13.58 and he's testifying to that 00:14:13.62\00:14:15.38 and he's saying, "We have the prophetic word" 00:14:15.42\00:14:17.75 all those prophecies about Messiah came true 00:14:17.79\00:14:19.99 because Jesus came 00:14:20.02\00:14:21.72 and it says, "We have the prophetic word confirmed, 00:14:21.76\00:14:24.56 which you do well to heed 00:14:24.59\00:14:26.39 as a light that shines in a dark place... " 00:14:26.43\00:14:28.96 and that to me is what the Bible is... 00:14:29.00\00:14:31.67 it provides light in a dark place. 00:14:31.70\00:14:34.30 John: When you gave us that illustration 00:14:34.34\00:14:35.97 and we're walking along in the dark... 00:14:36.00\00:14:38.07 you don't have light without a source... 00:14:38.11\00:14:40.18 it's either a phone or torch or something, 00:14:40.21\00:14:42.71 so, when we talk about "The Word is the lamp... " 00:14:42.74\00:14:46.45 that's the source from where the light comes and emanates from. 00:14:46.48\00:14:49.58 Peter: That's true. 00:14:49.65\00:14:50.99 John: And so, it's very important that we understand 00:14:51.02\00:14:52.92 that the Word of God is the source 00:14:52.95\00:14:54.92 and it helps us to go through life. 00:14:54.96\00:14:56.46 Rosemary: We have to have power. 00:14:56.52\00:14:57.96 Peter: That's interesting, you know, 00:14:57.99\00:14:59.86 sometimes... often you'll find... 00:14:59.89\00:15:01.70 I've got a red Bible here, 00:15:01.73\00:15:03.06 but often times, you have a Bible 00:15:03.10\00:15:04.63 that's got a black cover and people will say, 00:15:04.67\00:15:07.67 "Why are so often Bibles in black?" 00:15:07.70\00:15:11.07 and I say, "Well, because when they're closed, 00:15:11.11\00:15:12.71 it's all dark. " 00:15:12.74\00:15:14.08 All: Laughter. 00:15:14.11\00:15:15.44 John: So, open it, it's inside. Peter: You got to open it. 00:15:15.48\00:15:18.01 Rosemary: I was actually thinking of an illustration 00:15:18.05\00:15:19.55 when you were talking about going down the back... 00:15:19.58\00:15:21.02 the dark alley... 00:15:21.08\00:15:22.42 when we were in Thailand one time 00:15:22.45\00:15:24.42 and the kids were very young and we were working there, 00:15:24.45\00:15:27.62 we went through a... a cave... 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.66 from one side of a mountain to the other side through a cave 00:15:30.69\00:15:34.30 it had a river running through the cave, 00:15:34.33\00:15:36.83 and we were in the dark... total darkness... 00:15:36.87\00:15:39.20 climbing through a cave 00:15:39.23\00:15:41.00 with a couple of guys who knew their way in the dark... 00:15:41.04\00:15:43.74 we didn't have a clue where we were putting our feet, 00:15:43.77\00:15:46.04 there were boulders... there were all sorts of things, 00:15:46.07\00:15:48.08 there were ledges 00:15:48.11\00:15:49.44 and we didn't know where we were going 00:15:49.48\00:15:51.41 but we were feeling our way in the dark 00:15:51.45\00:15:53.58 and then, finally, there was a pinpoint of light 00:15:53.62\00:15:57.29 at the end of the tunnel... 00:15:57.32\00:15:58.65 and I'm in the end of the tunnel 00:15:58.69\00:16:00.02 because that was where the river came into the... 00:16:00.06\00:16:02.09 into this huge cave... 00:16:02.12\00:16:05.59 and it was quite an experience I'll never forget 00:16:05.63\00:16:08.16 but it was groping in the darkness 00:16:08.20\00:16:10.13 until we saw that light and the Bible is like that, 00:16:10.17\00:16:12.80 it lights up your life 00:16:12.83\00:16:14.20 so you're no longer groping in the dark. 00:16:14.24\00:16:15.64 Peter: It's a very comforting thing 00:16:15.67\00:16:17.24 to have light in the dark, you know, 00:16:17.27\00:16:18.74 sometimes young children... when they go to sleep at night, 00:16:18.77\00:16:21.18 they... they're afraid of the dark. 00:16:21.21\00:16:24.01 Rosemary: That made me think of another illustration. 00:16:24.05\00:16:26.11 Peter: They're afraid of the dark but... but yes... no... 00:16:26.15\00:16:28.15 the light is very comforting 00:16:28.18\00:16:29.52 and that is God's purpose, I believe, 00:16:29.55\00:16:30.99 He wants... He gave us this record for a reason, 00:16:31.02\00:16:34.19 He wants us to... to know that He knows where we are, 00:16:34.22\00:16:37.36 He wants us to know there's a plan... 00:16:37.39\00:16:38.73 and He wants us to know that He has our future secure. 00:16:38.76\00:16:41.16 John: I like the idea... you go to sleep at night, 00:16:41.23\00:16:43.80 it's dark... and you look forward to the morning 00:16:43.83\00:16:46.63 and... and the light is up and you become active, 00:16:46.67\00:16:49.40 it's a bit like that with the Word of God too, 00:16:49.44\00:16:51.34 you become active and you know better. 00:16:51.37\00:16:52.94 Peter: That is so true, yeah. 00:16:52.97\00:16:54.51 Rosemary: Hmmm... so I've got a verse... 00:16:54.54\00:16:55.94 John: Matthew 6:11, you know that's the Lord's Prayer 00:16:55.98\00:16:58.81 and I'm sure many of you know it, 00:16:58.85\00:17:00.38 and in verse 11 it says, 00:17:00.42\00:17:02.58 "Give us this day our daily bread. " 00:17:02.62\00:17:05.62 Is that talking about our food, Peter? 00:17:05.65\00:17:08.32 what is that talking about? 00:17:08.36\00:17:09.69 Peter: Well, you know, I think that... 00:17:09.72\00:17:11.73 I'm sure there are many ways you could look at this verse, 00:17:11.76\00:17:15.83 and certainly, God is our Provider, right? 00:17:15.86\00:17:17.33 John: Yes. 00:17:17.37\00:17:18.70 Peter: He is the provider of the sustenance... 00:17:18.73\00:17:21.07 the sun and the rain that makes the crops grow. 00:17:21.10\00:17:24.04 He is the One that provides our literal daily bread 00:17:24.07\00:17:26.94 in terms of the food that He brings forth from the earth 00:17:26.98\00:17:30.28 that He designed for us to eat. 00:17:30.31\00:17:32.65 But I also think of it in terms of the Word of God. 00:17:32.68\00:17:36.15 The Bible is compared... 00:17:36.18\00:17:38.95 the Word of God is compared to bread in the Bible 00:17:38.99\00:17:42.42 in a number of different places... 00:17:42.46\00:17:44.49 we're going to look at some of those other verses 00:17:44.53\00:17:46.19 a little later as well 00:17:46.23\00:17:47.56 but in terms of the daily bread, 00:17:47.60\00:17:50.67 you know, bread is one of those staples 00:17:50.70\00:17:53.84 that people around the world eat... 00:17:53.87\00:17:56.94 we talk about the bread line or we talk about... 00:17:56.97\00:18:02.01 John: Your bread and water shall be sure. 00:18:02.04\00:18:04.28 Peter: Well, that's what the Bible says... 00:18:04.31\00:18:06.41 or we might say, "Putting bread on the table... 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.65 how am I'm going to put bread on the table?" 00:18:08.68\00:18:10.85 and it's just one of the standards staple foods 00:18:10.89\00:18:13.42 that people eat all over the world 00:18:13.46\00:18:15.59 and I think that when it talks about the daily bread, 00:18:15.62\00:18:19.59 I think there's a spiritual element here that... 00:18:19.63\00:18:21.60 we need our daily dose of God. 00:18:21.66\00:18:24.13 You know, we need our daily dose of God 00:18:24.17\00:18:26.74 and I often will say to people... 00:18:26.77\00:18:28.30 and I'm teaching them the Bible 00:18:28.34\00:18:29.77 that God only expects you to read the Bible 00:18:29.80\00:18:32.77 on the days you eat. 00:18:32.81\00:18:34.14 Rosemary: Yes, I've heard you say that. 00:18:34.18\00:18:35.51 Peter: You know, and so... 00:18:35.54\00:18:36.88 and of course, the days we eat are pretty much every day 00:18:36.91\00:18:39.61 unless you're fasting for a particular reason... 00:18:39.68\00:18:41.42 most days you're eating and so, 00:18:41.45\00:18:43.89 every day you're eating and so. 00:18:43.95\00:18:46.25 John: And you don't eat once, you eat... 00:18:46.29\00:18:48.89 Peter: That's right. 00:18:48.92\00:18:50.26 John: And some people eat continuously through the day... 00:18:50.29\00:18:52.79 that's not a bad thing with the Word of God. 00:18:52.86\00:18:54.80 Peter: That's right... that's right. 00:18:54.86\00:18:56.20 I also think... you know, in terms of daily... daily bread 00:18:56.23\00:19:01.70 I think the Bible for me is like spiritual medicine. 00:19:01.74\00:19:05.31 John: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:19:05.37\00:19:06.71 Peter: You know, we have the sin sickness 00:19:06.74\00:19:08.21 that the Bible talks about 00:19:08.24\00:19:09.58 and it's really a self-centeredness... 00:19:09.61\00:19:12.85 it's a selfishness, you know, if I was to... 00:19:12.88\00:19:14.75 if you wanted to sum up what the scene really is... 00:19:14.78\00:19:16.99 it's selfishness amongst other things 00:19:17.02\00:19:20.72 and... and we all have it 00:19:20.76\00:19:22.49 and it's something that we can't deal with 00:19:22.52\00:19:25.49 unless God deals with it for us... 00:19:25.53\00:19:27.56 we have to bring it to God and He... He will deal with that 00:19:27.60\00:19:30.97 it's... the Bible to me is like, yes, it's like daily bread, 00:19:31.00\00:19:34.30 it's daily food... but it's also like daily medicine, 00:19:34.37\00:19:37.14 you know, daily medicine that helps me 00:19:37.17\00:19:39.91 to learn to be less selfish 00:19:39.94\00:19:43.08 and to learn from Jesus to be more selfless. 00:19:43.14\00:19:46.21 You know, Jesus was... the Bible says, 00:19:46.25\00:19:49.82 "God is love" and we see the best example 00:19:49.88\00:19:53.36 of the character of God in the person of Jesus 00:19:53.42\00:19:56.79 who came into the world... God in the flesh 00:19:56.83\00:20:00.20 to show us really what God was like 00:20:00.23\00:20:02.56 and to show us how to treat one another... 00:20:02.60\00:20:05.47 how to live a selfless life as opposed to a selfish life 00:20:05.50\00:20:08.94 and I find in the Scriptures that it's like a daily medicine, 00:20:08.97\00:20:12.81 you know, sometimes you might get sick 00:20:12.84\00:20:15.08 and you go to a physician... you go to a doctor 00:20:15.11\00:20:17.85 and he might prescribe for you some antibiotics 00:20:17.88\00:20:20.55 and he'll say, "Take one a day 00:20:20.58\00:20:23.15 but finish the course. " 00:20:23.18\00:20:24.69 Rosemary: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:20:24.72\00:20:26.15 Peter: And you might take one a day 00:20:26.19\00:20:27.62 and after three or four days, 00:20:27.66\00:20:28.99 you might be feeling a lot better 00:20:29.02\00:20:30.43 and you might think, "Well, do I need to...?" 00:20:30.46\00:20:32.09 Well, no he said, "Finish the course... " 00:20:32.13\00:20:33.53 Rosemary: That's the temptation isn't it? 00:20:33.56\00:20:34.90 Peter: And I think God is saying "You need me every day... 00:20:34.93\00:20:38.63 and you need to finish the course... " 00:20:38.67\00:20:40.60 which means, you're going to need me every day 00:20:40.64\00:20:42.20 until Jesus comes 00:20:42.24\00:20:43.57 and then you'll be with me face to face. 00:20:43.61\00:20:44.94 John: Someone said, "It's the eye problem... " 00:20:44.97\00:20:47.74 and so, the Word of God helps you to see clearly 00:20:47.78\00:20:50.75 and takes away the eye problem. 00:20:50.81\00:20:52.88 Peter: Yes, yeah I know, 00:20:52.91\00:20:54.98 and so, that's how I sort of see that in the daily bread. 00:20:55.05\00:20:59.05 The other thing I think of is the fact that 00:20:59.12\00:21:02.22 no matter how well you eat, John, 00:21:02.26\00:21:05.23 I'll never be nourished by that, 00:21:05.29\00:21:08.23 you know that I'm saying? 00:21:08.26\00:21:09.66 John: That's true. 00:21:09.70\00:21:11.03 Peter: You can eat three hearty meals a day 00:21:11.07\00:21:14.00 but that's not going to help me at all 00:21:14.04\00:21:16.74 you know, and I think sometimes we can... 00:21:16.81\00:21:19.37 I think, Christians sometimes can get caught in the trap 00:21:19.41\00:21:22.68 of waiting for a preacher or a teacher 00:21:22.71\00:21:28.25 to give them that morsel of spiritual food 00:21:28.28\00:21:32.25 where God really wants us to learn 00:21:32.29\00:21:35.22 how to get the food ourselves that He has provided. 00:21:35.26\00:21:38.56 There's a... there's a story that I've heard 00:21:38.59\00:21:44.50 and I might have even heard it on 3ABN 00:21:44.53\00:21:46.40 and it's about the bears in Yellowstone Park 00:21:46.43\00:21:50.07 and the tourists that go there to feed the bears 00:21:50.11\00:21:53.71 and there are Park Rangers there 00:21:53.74\00:21:55.34 and the tourists are feeding the bears... 00:21:55.38\00:21:57.08 there were some alone 00:21:57.11\00:21:59.01 and one of the tourists says, 00:21:59.05\00:22:00.82 "You know, you've got all these signs up around the park 00:22:00.85\00:22:03.69 saying to the tourists "Do not feed the bears" 00:22:03.72\00:22:05.59 but the tourists seem to take no notice 00:22:05.62\00:22:08.19 and they're feeding the bears all the time and what have you 00:22:08.22\00:22:10.33 and the... the Ranger says... 00:22:10.36\00:22:12.23 he said, "Yeah, it's very sad, 00:22:12.26\00:22:14.06 I wish the tourists would be back here in the winter time 00:22:14.10\00:22:17.43 where they see the bears starving 00:22:17.47\00:22:20.07 because the bears have never learned to feed themselves 00:22:20.10\00:22:23.27 because they've relied on the tourists... 00:22:23.30\00:22:25.11 and so, when the winter comes when there are no tourists, 00:22:25.14\00:22:27.94 the bears are starving because they haven't learned 00:22:27.98\00:22:32.05 to feed themselves... " 00:22:32.11\00:22:33.52 and the Ranger said, "A fed bear is a dead bear... " 00:22:33.55\00:22:36.52 and the... the idea is that 00:22:36.55\00:22:39.39 God has provided this for us as Christians 00:22:39.45\00:22:41.72 not to wait for some expert or some priest or some doctor 00:22:41.76\00:22:45.66 to be able to share wisdom 00:22:45.69\00:22:48.46 although those people can do that 00:22:48.50\00:22:50.40 but God has provided the Word. 00:22:50.47\00:22:52.43 We're so lucky that we have the Word available to us 00:22:52.50\00:22:56.04 and God wants us to go and get our daily bread 00:22:56.07\00:22:58.54 straight from the source. 00:22:58.57\00:23:00.28 Rosemary: Talking about daily bread, let me read Exodus 00:23:00.31\00:23:03.18 chapter 16 verse 21. 00:23:03.24\00:23:05.61 Peter: Right. 00:23:05.65\00:23:06.98 Rosemary: This is talking about heavenly bread... 00:23:07.02\00:23:09.48 I want to taste this bread. 00:23:09.52\00:23:11.92 It was a test that God had given to the people of Israel 00:23:11.95\00:23:16.16 and it says, "And they gathered it every morning, 00:23:16.19\00:23:20.36 every man according to his eating: 00:23:20.40\00:23:23.23 and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. " 00:23:23.26\00:23:26.80 Now, this is the manna... the bread from heaven. 00:23:26.84\00:23:29.57 Peter: Right, so this story is... 00:23:29.60\00:23:32.37 I think there is an element of test in it 00:23:32.41\00:23:34.41 but I... I actually think it's a story 00:23:34.44\00:23:36.41 about God's great provision 00:23:36.44\00:23:37.78 and the children of Israel had come out of Egypt, 00:23:37.81\00:23:41.22 they were now in the wilderness, 00:23:41.28\00:23:42.62 they were free but they were still hungry 00:23:42.65\00:23:44.39 and they wanted something to eat 00:23:44.45\00:23:46.12 and God rained down manna from heaven 00:23:46.15\00:23:48.16 for them to eat and we don't know precisely 00:23:48.19\00:23:50.96 what it looked like... 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.33 the Bible describes it a little bit 00:23:52.36\00:23:53.93 but this is obviously something unique, 00:23:53.96\00:23:55.70 you don't see this stuff growing on trees, 00:23:55.73\00:23:57.37 but God had rained down manna... bread from heaven... so to speak 00:23:57.40\00:24:01.97 to feed His people... He was providing for His people 00:24:02.00\00:24:05.24 and He was raining it down six days of the week 00:24:05.27\00:24:07.78 and then there would be none on the Sabbath 00:24:07.81\00:24:10.28 and the idea would be, 00:24:10.31\00:24:11.71 on the sixth day, they would gather twice as much 00:24:11.75\00:24:13.85 so that they would have some for Friday 00:24:13.88\00:24:15.52 and then some for the Sabbath as well 00:24:15.55\00:24:17.12 and, of course, the reason I sort of put this verse in there 00:24:17.15\00:24:24.43 is that sometimes as Christians we get the idea that 00:24:24.49\00:24:29.16 we go along every weekend to church 00:24:29.23\00:24:32.33 and we get our meal for the week 00:24:32.37\00:24:35.47 and we try and... 00:24:35.50\00:24:36.87 Rosemary: We get filled up. 00:24:36.91\00:24:38.24 Peter: We get filled up on what the preacher has preached 00:24:38.27\00:24:40.44 with the food he's eaten over the week 00:24:40.48\00:24:42.48 and we try and grab some of those crumbs 00:24:42.51\00:24:46.31 and we hope that that meal is going to last us all week long 00:24:46.35\00:24:50.15 until we can get back to church and get another helping, 00:24:50.19\00:24:53.92 so to speak of spiritual food, 00:24:53.96\00:24:56.09 whereas I think what this story of the manna teaches me 00:24:56.12\00:25:01.36 is that God is providing bread from heaven every day 00:25:01.40\00:25:05.83 for us to go out and collect and it's in the Word of God 00:25:05.87\00:25:10.24 and then, you see, on Sabbath, there is no more... 00:25:10.31\00:25:14.71 well, what does that mean? 00:25:14.74\00:25:16.08 I think what it means is, we gather that bread every day 00:25:16.11\00:25:19.08 and we're studying the Word of God... 00:25:19.11\00:25:20.98 we're reading from the Word of God... 00:25:21.02\00:25:22.82 we're getting that daily bread every day 00:25:22.88\00:25:24.79 and then on Sabbath, we come to church 00:25:24.82\00:25:26.72 praising the Lord... thanking God 00:25:26.76\00:25:29.79 for all that He's fed us with through the week. 00:25:29.82\00:25:31.99 John: That's right. 00:25:32.03\00:25:33.36 Peter: So, rather than coming starving to death 00:25:33.40\00:25:35.63 hoping to get it filled. 00:25:35.66\00:25:37.10 Rosemary: And it's not as though there isn't any bread 00:25:37.13\00:25:39.40 for the Sabbath 00:25:39.43\00:25:40.87 because He's given us extra on the Friday 00:25:40.94\00:25:42.50 to use on the Sabbath. 00:25:42.57\00:25:44.91 So, on the Sabbath we still have bread... 00:25:44.94\00:25:46.84 we just didn't have to go and gather it... 00:25:46.88\00:25:48.74 He's given it to us already. 00:25:48.78\00:25:50.11 Peter: That's right... that's right, 00:25:50.15\00:25:51.48 but I think that that to me... 00:25:51.51\00:25:53.15 there's a huge shift in my mind 00:25:53.18\00:25:55.15 because as an unbeliever, I would think to myself, 00:25:55.18\00:25:58.79 "Why would you spend any time at all going to church? 00:25:58.82\00:26:02.42 What a phenomenal waste of time... " 00:26:02.46\00:26:05.56 I would have thought, you know, 00:26:05.59\00:26:07.00 because I didn't think God exists... 00:26:07.03\00:26:08.36 it makes a whole bunch of difference if God really is real 00:26:08.40\00:26:11.03 and it makes a difference as to... 00:26:11.07\00:26:13.44 "Is He worthy of worship?" 00:26:13.47\00:26:15.74 The Bible tells us that God is worthy of worship 00:26:15.77\00:26:18.37 because He is the Creator and He is the Redeemer 00:26:18.41\00:26:20.78 and so, that makes a whole lot of difference 00:26:20.81\00:26:23.14 but I think it... it makes a difference 00:26:23.18\00:26:24.91 in the Christian sense that why do we go to church? 00:26:24.95\00:26:28.68 Do we go to get or do we go to give?" 00:26:28.72\00:26:31.32 Rosemary: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:26:31.35\00:26:32.69 Peter: And from my perspective it's definitely 00:26:32.72\00:26:35.22 a very much a case of... you go to give... 00:26:35.26\00:26:37.93 you go to give God your worship... your adoration... 00:26:37.99\00:26:40.46 you go to give support and encouragement 00:26:40.50\00:26:42.53 to other Christian believers 00:26:42.56\00:26:43.90 and when you go to give, in the beautiful economy of God, 00:26:43.93\00:26:48.57 you always get blessed. 00:26:48.60\00:26:50.74 You don't go to get it, 00:26:50.77\00:26:52.84 but because you go to give, you get blessed 00:26:52.87\00:26:55.84 and that's... 00:26:55.88\00:26:57.21 Rosemary: You go to give because you've been getting all week. 00:26:57.25\00:26:59.08 Peter: That's right... yeah... 00:26:59.11\00:27:00.45 so, that's one of the beautiful things. 00:27:00.48\00:27:02.12 There's one other thing I'm going to mention about that 00:27:02.18\00:27:04.29 in terms of the spiritual battle that we face, 00:27:04.32\00:27:08.26 we have a carnal nature... a natural nature 00:27:08.29\00:27:12.23 and that is a natural selfish nature, 00:27:12.26\00:27:13.96 I don't need to be taught how to be more selfish, 00:27:14.00\00:27:16.26 I'm pretty good at that naturally, right? 00:27:16.30\00:27:18.70 But I do need to be taught how to be more selfless... 00:27:18.73\00:27:21.20 and so, you... we have this... 00:27:21.24\00:27:23.47 the battle going on that... 00:27:23.51\00:27:25.21 that is in our hearts... it's in our minds... 00:27:25.24\00:27:27.48 we see it in the world... 00:27:27.51\00:27:28.84 the battle between good and evil, 00:27:28.88\00:27:30.21 but that battle exists in the heart and in the mind too 00:27:30.25\00:27:32.75 and we want to give God the victory in that battle 00:27:32.78\00:27:36.38 and so, sometimes I think of the... 00:27:36.42\00:27:39.75 the spiritual battle... 00:27:39.79\00:27:41.29 it's like a battle between two dogs fighting 00:27:41.32\00:27:45.09 and you might separate those two dogs 00:27:45.13\00:27:47.80 and you might feed one for two weeks 00:27:47.83\00:27:50.47 and then you starve the other for two weeks 00:27:50.50\00:27:52.47 and then you put them back together... 00:27:52.50\00:27:54.34 and it's the one that's the strongest... 00:27:54.37\00:27:56.17 it's the one that's been fed for the two weeks 00:27:56.20\00:27:58.01 that's going to win that battle, 00:27:58.04\00:27:59.37 so, I like to say, "You've got to feed the dog 00:27:59.41\00:28:02.44 you want to win. " 00:28:02.48\00:28:03.85 Rosemary: Hmmm... 00:28:03.88\00:28:05.21 Peter: And in the spiritual battle, 00:28:05.25\00:28:06.61 we have to feed the dog we want to win... 00:28:06.65\00:28:08.95 we have to feed the spiritual side 00:28:08.98\00:28:10.52 and that's why I think the Scriptures are so important 00:28:10.55\00:28:13.22 because it enables us to feed the spiritual side of our nature 00:28:13.25\00:28:17.69 there's plenty of other influences in the world 00:28:17.76\00:28:19.59 that are going to attempt to fill and feed the carnal nature 00:28:19.63\00:28:24.80 and I think sometimes in my own Christian experience, 00:28:24.83\00:28:29.94 if I spend six days with the world 00:28:30.01\00:28:32.91 and then come again to try and get that feast on Sabbath, 00:28:32.97\00:28:37.91 to... to... to fill me up for the rest of the week, 00:28:37.95\00:28:41.82 it's a lot greater challenge to live a Christian life. 00:28:41.85\00:28:45.69 John: It's an absolutely huge challenge 00:28:45.72\00:28:47.82 because it's interfering with what you've done 00:28:47.86\00:28:49.59 in the six days previous and so... 00:28:49.62\00:28:51.93 Peter: Yeah, it's contrary... it's like running upstream. 00:28:51.96\00:28:53.73 John: Yeah, and so, why? it becomes unpleasant 00:28:53.80\00:28:56.97 because you can't do anymore what you want to do, 00:28:57.03\00:29:00.14 and so, it is a real challenge, an absolute challenge. 00:29:00.20\00:29:03.51 Peter: So, feeding the side we want to win 00:29:03.54\00:29:05.84 is important in that spiritual battle. 00:29:05.87\00:29:08.11 Rosemary: John, why don't you read Proverbs... 00:29:08.14\00:29:10.75 John: 3:5 and 6... these are verses... 00:29:10.81\00:29:13.28 some texts that I've learnt also it says, 00:29:13.31\00:29:16.08 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; 00:29:16.12\00:29:18.69 and lean not unto thine own understanding. 00:29:18.72\00:29:21.22 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, 00:29:21.26\00:29:23.59 and He shall direct thy paths. " 00:29:23.63\00:29:25.43 I mean, can we trust God? Absolutely. 00:29:25.46\00:29:29.13 Peter: Absolutely, and I think well... we say that John, 00:29:29.16\00:29:32.10 because we have experience in trusting God 00:29:32.13\00:29:35.20 and having the payoff, you know what I mean? 00:29:35.27\00:29:38.31 He is... He is faithful... 00:29:38.34\00:29:39.67 we have had some experience with that 00:29:39.71\00:29:44.41 and there were times when I didn't have that experience 00:29:44.45\00:29:46.65 and I had to choose... 00:29:46.68\00:29:48.15 trust God or go back to the world? 00:29:48.18\00:29:49.95 John: It's like driving a car, you're in charge, 00:29:49.98\00:29:51.55 you want to go where you want to go... 00:29:51.62\00:29:52.95 this is saying, "I'm going to give it to someone 00:29:52.99\00:29:55.52 who really knows how to drive and really knows where to go. " 00:29:55.59\00:29:58.39 That's the... that's the faith that's needed. 00:29:58.43\00:30:00.83 Peter: And then there are a lot of metaphors 00:30:00.86\00:30:03.16 that we'll use in this Program 00:30:03.20\00:30:04.53 and a lot of metaphors that are being used 00:30:04.57\00:30:06.13 to describe the Bible 00:30:06.17\00:30:07.50 but in lots of ways, it's like a map from here to heaven, 00:30:07.54\00:30:13.01 all right, it's a way... it's a way of directing us... 00:30:13.04\00:30:16.78 in fact, these two verses, 00:30:16.81\00:30:18.35 I like to think of Proverbs 3:5 and 6 00:30:18.38\00:30:21.38 as God's GPS... John: Okay. 00:30:21.45\00:30:23.92 Peter: God's Positioning System 00:30:23.99\00:30:26.42 you know, where we'll rely on our GPS these days 00:30:26.45\00:30:29.56 to get us from A to B and it hopefully shows you the best way 00:30:29.59\00:30:32.43 and doesn't take you off into a field 00:30:32.46\00:30:33.80 or find yourself in the middle of nowhere. 00:30:33.83\00:30:35.86 John: When those first GPSs came out, 00:30:35.90\00:30:37.67 I remember we would go... 00:30:37.70\00:30:39.37 Peter: They were a bit dodgy. John: They were very dodgy. 00:30:39.40\00:30:41.07 Rosemary: There's also just down... 00:30:41.10\00:30:43.14 just down a little bit further in that chapter, 00:30:43.17\00:30:46.07 there's a verse that says, 00:30:46.11\00:30:47.64 "My son despise not the chastening of the LORD; 00:30:47.68\00:30:51.41 neither be weary of His correction... " 00:30:51.45\00:30:53.65 and when you put it together with Proverbs 3:5... 00:30:53.68\00:30:57.42 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart... " 00:30:57.45\00:30:59.59 when He's chastening you, trust Him 00:30:59.62\00:31:01.92 don't lean to your own understanding 00:31:01.96\00:31:03.73 of what's going on. 00:31:03.76\00:31:05.09 Peter: Well, that fits right in with the GPS idea 00:31:05.13\00:31:07.76 because the verse 6 there... you've got... I'll read it again 00:31:07.80\00:31:10.97 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart 00:31:11.00\00:31:12.37 and lean not on your own understanding... " 00:31:12.40\00:31:14.10 that's verse 5... 00:31:14.14\00:31:15.47 and verse 6, "In all your ways acknowledge Him 00:31:15.50\00:31:17.97 and he shall direct your paths. " 00:31:18.01\00:31:21.51 Rosemary: But then verse 7 says, "Be not wise in your own eyes: 00:31:21.54\00:31:25.65 fear the LORD, and depart from evil... " 00:31:25.68\00:31:27.55 so, they all go together, 00:31:27.62\00:31:28.95 when you put those verses together, 00:31:28.98\00:31:30.32 it makes a lot more sense. 00:31:30.35\00:31:31.89 Peter: Well, the verse you refer to... verse 11, 00:31:31.92\00:31:34.72 it says, "Do not detest His correction. " 00:31:34.76\00:31:37.03 You're driving down the road, 00:31:37.06\00:31:38.83 you're supposed to have taken a left turn 00:31:38.86\00:31:41.76 and the GPS says, "Perform a U turn... " 00:31:41.80\00:31:44.70 you heard that? You know, 00:31:44.73\00:31:46.53 when you've gone past the road you should have gone down, 00:31:46.60\00:31:48.40 and then you need to come back and take... 00:31:48.44\00:31:50.07 that's a "course correction" right? 00:31:50.11\00:31:52.47 Do not despise that correction 00:31:52.51\00:31:55.28 because otherwise you're going to get lost... 00:31:55.31\00:31:58.81 right? Isn't that right? 00:31:58.85\00:32:00.88 You're going to end up lost 00:32:00.92\00:32:02.25 if you don't follow the directions 00:32:02.28\00:32:04.95 so, that's what God provides and I think that... 00:32:05.02\00:32:07.16 that for me... again was... 00:32:07.19\00:32:09.92 it's a very comforting set of verses... 00:32:09.96\00:32:11.79 you put your trust in the Lord, 00:32:11.86\00:32:13.19 He's going to be the One who directs your paths 00:32:13.23\00:32:16.13 because we all have limited understanding 00:32:16.16\00:32:18.33 of the... the place that we live in 00:32:18.37\00:32:21.30 or the work that we're doing, whatever it might be... 00:32:21.34\00:32:23.87 we have limited understanding and the Bible says, 00:32:23.91\00:32:26.44 "Do not lean on your own understanding... " 00:32:26.47\00:32:28.24 rather lean on the understanding of the One who made you... 00:32:28.28\00:32:32.15 who knows where you came from... 00:32:32.18\00:32:34.05 knows where you are now... 00:32:34.12\00:32:35.45 and knows what these plans are for you 00:32:35.48\00:32:36.95 and so, I really like that... 00:32:36.99\00:32:39.35 it's God trying to direct us on a path that takes us to heaven. 00:32:39.39\00:32:43.59 John: It doesn't matter who you are... 00:32:43.63\00:32:45.49 we are all a product of what we're taught 00:32:45.53\00:32:48.26 and so, if you've had the ability 00:32:48.30\00:32:49.66 to grow up in a Christian home, 00:32:49.70\00:32:51.03 your understanding is very different to someone who hasn't 00:32:51.07\00:32:54.50 but the thing is, if we trust in the Lord... 00:32:54.54\00:32:56.97 if we go to the Word of God, you'll discover more information 00:32:57.01\00:33:00.98 more knowledge that will help you to go down that right path. 00:33:01.01\00:33:04.05 Rosemary: Now, you're talking about God directing our paths, 00:33:04.08\00:33:07.12 I want you to use the ability and the knowledge 00:33:07.15\00:33:10.32 that God has given you 00:33:10.35\00:33:11.69 to direct us on the path of how to study this Word. 00:33:11.72\00:33:14.42 Peter: Well... well... thank you for... 00:33:14.46\00:33:17.09 yeah, mentioning that because I think there's... 00:33:17.13\00:33:19.56 a couple of things I would say, 00:33:19.59\00:33:21.26 there's lots of different ways to approach the Bible 00:33:21.30\00:33:23.90 and I'm going to talk a little bit about some of the tools 00:33:23.93\00:33:26.27 that I first... I guess discovered 00:33:26.30\00:33:29.94 when I first came to the Bible because the Bible is a big book 00:33:29.97\00:33:34.54 right, for... for the average person... 00:33:34.58\00:33:36.68 the Bible is a big book... 00:33:36.71\00:33:38.05 a lot of people don't do a lot of reading these days 00:33:38.08\00:33:39.88 and I didn't do a lot of reading, 00:33:39.91\00:33:41.25 I'm a very visual person 00:33:41.28\00:33:42.62 but the Bible was so fascinating and I had to get into it 00:33:42.65\00:33:46.29 and the... you can read from the beginning, 00:33:46.32\00:33:50.53 you can read Genesis and Exodus 00:33:50.56\00:33:52.36 and you can start reading if that's what you want to do 00:33:52.39\00:33:55.90 and actually Genesis is a good foundational book 00:33:55.93\00:33:58.03 to understand where everything came from, 00:33:58.07\00:34:00.07 but a lot of people will start reading in the New Testament 00:34:00.10\00:34:02.70 they might read one of the gospels: 00:34:02.74\00:34:04.17 Matthew, Mark, Luke or John, 00:34:04.21\00:34:05.61 in fact, I often will say in terms of the Christian faith... 00:34:05.64\00:34:09.41 in terms of the gospels... I often say to people, 00:34:09.44\00:34:12.85 "Start with the gospel of Mark... " 00:34:12.88\00:34:14.88 it's a very... it's the shortest of the gospels 00:34:14.92\00:34:17.92 and it's very brisk as it moves through the story 00:34:17.95\00:34:24.09 of the life of Jesus 00:34:24.13\00:34:25.46 and so, all the time in Mark it will say, 00:34:25.49\00:34:29.73 "And immediately Jesus did this... 00:34:29.76\00:34:31.10 and immediately this occurred" 00:34:31.13\00:34:32.53 and it moves fairly rapidly through the story 00:34:32.57\00:34:35.80 so, if you're going to start somewhere, 00:34:35.84\00:34:37.47 I think Mark is not a bad place to start 00:34:37.51\00:34:39.54 in terms of... if you're new to the Book, 00:34:39.57\00:34:42.88 but the other thing I would say... 00:34:42.91\00:34:45.31 there were three tools, I guess, that I found helpful 00:34:45.35\00:34:49.15 when I was starting out in the Bible 00:34:49.18\00:34:51.09 and I realize there will be many people watching this Program 00:34:51.12\00:34:53.59 who have been studying the Bible for a while... 00:34:53.62\00:34:56.26 and that's great and we should keep doing that, 00:34:56.29\00:34:59.46 in fact, I'll insert a piece here 00:34:59.49\00:35:01.50 that one of the reasons that the Bible is unlike any other book, 00:35:01.53\00:35:05.23 is because you can read the whole thing through 00:35:05.27\00:35:07.90 and you still need to read the whole thing through again. 00:35:07.94\00:35:11.01 Rosemary: And again, and again, you keep reading more. 00:35:11.04\00:35:13.71 Peter: Every time you come... 00:35:13.74\00:35:15.08 my wife and I were circling through the Bible again 00:35:15.11\00:35:18.28 at the moment and 00:35:18.31\00:35:19.65 you come across verses that you've never seen before 00:35:19.68\00:35:23.89 even though you have seen them before. 00:35:23.92\00:35:26.02 "How come I haven't seen that before?" 00:35:26.05\00:35:28.09 "Who wrote that in there?" 00:35:28.12\00:35:29.69 Rosemary: I come across verses, I think, 00:35:29.72\00:35:31.19 "I've never seen that before... " 00:35:31.26\00:35:32.73 and yet I've got it underlined 00:35:32.76\00:35:34.20 or I've got a word circled and go, 00:35:34.23\00:35:35.66 "I have looked at that before. " 00:35:35.70\00:35:37.13 Peter: And suddenly, because of the experiences that you've had 00:35:37.17\00:35:40.54 since you last read that... that word 00:35:40.60\00:35:42.94 or because of all the other Bible verses that you've read 00:35:43.00\00:35:45.47 circling your way back to that verse, 00:35:45.51\00:35:47.11 it's opened a window on that verse for you... 00:35:47.14\00:35:50.11 your experience is opened... 00:35:50.15\00:35:51.61 your experience with God has opened a window on that verse 00:35:51.65\00:35:53.92 for you... that makes it all the more prevalent 00:35:53.95\00:35:56.02 so, I love re-discovery of the Bible as you go along 00:35:56.08\00:36:00.06 but there were three, I guess, things that I found helpful 00:36:00.09\00:36:03.76 when I first came to the Bible, one was a Concordance... 00:36:03.79\00:36:07.40 a good Concordance 00:36:07.43\00:36:08.76 and I have a Strong's... 00:36:08.80\00:36:10.47 a hard copy of Strong's Concordance 00:36:10.53\00:36:12.27 of course, these days, I have my computer Bible version 00:36:12.30\00:36:16.10 and I've got the Concordance on that 00:36:16.14\00:36:17.64 and I've got the Bible on my phone 00:36:17.67\00:36:19.11 and I can search words on that but that's a really useful tool 00:36:19.14\00:36:22.61 to be able to search up words 00:36:22.64\00:36:24.58 so that you can see the word "Messiah" 00:36:24.61\00:36:27.15 in one place in the Bible 00:36:27.18\00:36:28.52 and you can find out where that word appears 00:36:28.55\00:36:30.69 in other places in the Bible, 00:36:30.72\00:36:32.05 that's a very helpful tool. 00:36:32.09\00:36:33.42 The other two tools that are very... fairly basic 00:36:33.46\00:36:36.16 but I think are really quite helpful 00:36:36.19\00:36:39.23 is to have timeline of the Bible 00:36:39.26\00:36:42.13 and realize what happened when... 00:36:42.16\00:36:45.00 because when I understood 00:36:45.03\00:36:46.37 and you mentioned this before, John, 00:36:46.40\00:36:48.20 about the historicalness of the Bible... 00:36:48.24\00:36:50.41 the fact that this is bedded in history... 00:36:50.44\00:36:53.11 this is God interacting with real people 00:36:53.14\00:36:55.68 in real places that really existed 00:36:55.71\00:36:58.11 which is again another encouragement to us... 00:36:58.15\00:37:00.82 if God can work in real people's lives back then, 00:37:00.85\00:37:03.45 He can work in real people's lives today. 00:37:03.49\00:37:05.75 But it was really helpful to me 00:37:05.79\00:37:08.76 to have a timeline from the beginning... 00:37:08.79\00:37:10.99 where all the different characters and events 00:37:11.03\00:37:13.90 of the Bible took place 00:37:13.93\00:37:15.33 because that is not all chronological. 00:37:15.36\00:37:17.27 The Bible is gathered together in different sections 00:37:17.30\00:37:22.00 so, you have the section of the Law... 00:37:22.04\00:37:23.54 then you have the history 00:37:23.57\00:37:24.91 and then you have the minor prophets 00:37:24.94\00:37:26.61 and then you have the poetry... the Psalms... 00:37:26.64\00:37:29.94 the major prophets... the minor prophets and so forth, 00:37:29.98\00:37:32.51 they're gathered together in a different way 00:37:32.55\00:37:34.72 than a chronological fashion 00:37:34.75\00:37:36.55 so, it's helpful because most of us think chronologically... 00:37:36.58\00:37:40.02 it's helpful to have that timeline. 00:37:40.06\00:37:41.49 Rosemary: It helps you also see where the Bible and History... 00:37:41.52\00:37:45.36 the things that you're learning in school... 00:37:45.39\00:37:47.70 where they fit together... where the pharaohs were... 00:37:47.73\00:37:50.03 where the Romans were... where the... whoever... 00:37:50.07\00:37:51.77 Peter: Yeah, there's so much great ancient history there 00:37:51.80\00:37:54.57 but... and the thing is a map... 00:37:54.60\00:37:56.64 you know, you can buy a fairly cheap Bible map... 00:37:56.67\00:38:01.21 you know, a set of Bible maps 00:38:01.24\00:38:02.58 to just help you find your way around the Bible lands 00:38:02.61\00:38:05.48 and the journeys that Abraham took or... 00:38:05.51\00:38:08.18 Rosemary: When you're a visual person... that's very helpful. 00:38:08.22\00:38:10.39 Peter: I think so... so in terms of studying the Bible, 00:38:10.42\00:38:13.89 what we're really talking about here... 00:38:13.92\00:38:16.02 we mentioned before about the daily bread 00:38:16.06\00:38:18.13 and the need really for me to get 00:38:18.16\00:38:20.50 a dose of God's Word every day 00:38:20.53\00:38:22.76 and so, how do you do that 00:38:22.83\00:38:25.47 and how do you keep that... that fresh... 00:38:25.50\00:38:27.54 and I've mentioned you could... 00:38:27.57\00:38:28.90 you can read through a book of the Bible 00:38:28.94\00:38:31.07 but what I tend to do these days in my own daily devotions is... 00:38:31.11\00:38:35.64 I'm in the Gospels... I'm in John now... 00:38:35.68\00:38:37.71 I've been going through the Gospels, 00:38:37.75\00:38:39.75 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and what I will do is, 00:38:39.78\00:38:42.98 I just take one story in the Gospel of John... 00:38:43.05\00:38:46.19 so, not even a whole chapter but one little section... 00:38:46.22\00:38:49.42 and in my Bible I have little headings 00:38:49.46\00:38:51.53 for each of those sections 00:38:51.56\00:38:53.26 and so, I can read a little section of the Bible... 00:38:53.29\00:38:56.10 one particular story that is there 00:38:56.13\00:38:58.80 and I will read that story through... 00:38:58.83\00:39:01.44 and I might read it through two or three times 00:39:01.47\00:39:03.74 so I've got a good handle on what that story is 00:39:03.77\00:39:06.01 and then I ask myself three questions 00:39:06.04\00:39:08.91 and these are the three questions that I ask, 00:39:08.94\00:39:12.75 "What does this story teach me about God?" 00:39:12.78\00:39:16.42 Rosemary: Hmmm... 00:39:16.45\00:39:17.79 Peter: Okay... that's what I want to know. 00:39:17.82\00:39:19.72 We're reading the Bible because we want to know about God right? 00:39:19.75\00:39:22.29 So, what does this story teach me about God? 00:39:22.32\00:39:25.76 And it might tell me something about a characteristic of God... 00:39:25.79\00:39:29.33 God's care for humanity... 00:39:29.36\00:39:30.77 God's creative power... 00:39:30.80\00:39:32.13 might tell me about the compassion of God through Jesus 00:39:32.17\00:39:34.90 and so forth, but I'm asking that question, 00:39:34.94\00:39:37.74 "What does this story teach me about God?" 00:39:37.77\00:39:41.54 And what I'm doing now too is I'm journaling 00:39:41.58\00:39:45.31 and I didn't use to journal 00:39:45.38\00:39:46.82 because I don't enjoy writing much, 00:39:46.85\00:39:48.42 I'm not a great writer I mean, I can write, believe me, 00:39:48.45\00:39:51.42 I was able to pass exams and everything so, I can write 00:39:51.45\00:39:57.33 but it's not my most enjoyable thing to do 00:39:57.36\00:39:59.29 but I have begun... 00:39:59.36\00:40:01.70 in the last few years I've begun journaling 00:40:01.73\00:40:06.57 and I don't write a lot 00:40:06.60\00:40:08.87 but what I do write is, I write the date... 00:40:08.90\00:40:11.67 I write the passage of Scripture that I'm looking at, 00:40:11.71\00:40:15.18 and then I write 1... the answer to question 1... 00:40:15.21\00:40:19.38 "What does this say about God?" 00:40:19.41\00:40:20.75 And I'll write in there what this passage tells me about God 00:40:20.78\00:40:25.15 and I'll just write that down in a couple of sentences 00:40:25.19\00:40:28.49 and then, the question 2 is, 00:40:28.52\00:40:31.76 "What does this passage teach me about humanity?" 00:40:31.79\00:40:34.76 Rosemary: Chuckling... 00:40:34.80\00:40:36.13 Peter: And that's often not good you know, 00:40:36.33\00:40:38.63 this is... it's talking about the fallenness of man 00:40:38.67\00:40:41.17 or the need of man... or the assumptions that man makes, 00:40:41.20\00:40:44.94 or the... the selfish motivations 00:40:44.97\00:40:49.41 that sometimes we have for doing or saying certain things... 00:40:49.44\00:40:52.31 or... 00:40:52.35\00:40:54.62 Rosemary: That means that there are actually some good people? 00:40:54.65\00:40:56.22 Peter: Well, sometimes depending on the story... 00:40:56.25\00:40:59.52 sometimes it's the reaction of man which is positive 00:40:59.55\00:41:02.79 so, it's not always negative. 00:41:02.82\00:41:04.53 Okay, what does this story teach me about God? 00:41:04.56\00:41:06.76 What does this story teach me about humanity? 00:41:06.80\00:41:08.96 And, it might be... 00:41:09.00\00:41:11.17 it teaches me that man can respond positively 00:41:11.20\00:41:14.50 to God's commands... instructions... invitations... 00:41:14.54\00:41:17.84 whatever... you know, 00:41:17.87\00:41:19.21 so, I'm always looking for those things 00:41:19.24\00:41:21.98 so, that's the second question. 00:41:22.01\00:41:23.35 First question: What does this teach me about God? 00:41:23.38\00:41:25.31 Second question: What does it teach me about humanity? 00:41:25.35\00:41:27.75 And then, thirdly, it's that personal application. 00:41:27.78\00:41:30.12 What is this story telling me that God wants me to know. 00:41:30.19\00:41:35.12 What does He want me to do? 00:41:35.16\00:41:36.49 What is he trying to teach me today through this story? 00:41:36.52\00:41:40.43 And I find those three questions very helpful 00:41:40.46\00:41:44.73 for reflecting on the Bible passage 00:41:44.77\00:41:48.20 and gleaning from it certain things 00:41:48.24\00:41:51.61 that I might otherwise miss with the surface reading of it. 00:41:51.64\00:41:55.28 Sometimes, we want quantity... 00:41:55.31\00:41:58.35 we just want to read through the Bible as quickly as we can 00:41:58.41\00:42:01.38 to get the whole big picture 00:42:01.45\00:42:03.08 but I think it's really beneficial 00:42:03.12\00:42:06.99 to take the time in daily devotionals... 00:42:07.02\00:42:10.03 that's at least the approach I'm taking now, 00:42:10.06\00:42:13.03 is to look at each verse... each passage of Scripture 00:42:13.06\00:42:17.37 and by asking those questions, 00:42:17.40\00:42:20.67 it helps you to dig in a little bit more 00:42:20.70\00:42:22.84 rather than just reading through and saying, 00:42:22.87\00:42:24.77 "Yup, that's another good story 00:42:24.81\00:42:26.14 and let's move on to the next one, so... " 00:42:26.17\00:42:27.51 Rosemary: Hmmm... very good. 00:42:27.54\00:42:28.88 Peter: So, those are some ways I think that can be helpful. 00:42:28.91\00:42:31.31 Of course, there are other things you can buy 00:42:31.35\00:42:33.48 books with topical studies in them... 00:42:33.52\00:42:35.92 you can get Bible-marking resources and forth 00:42:35.98\00:42:38.15 where you're going through topics of the Bible. 00:42:38.19\00:42:40.29 Rosemary: Which is very helpful. Peter: Which is very helpful 00:42:40.36\00:42:41.69 particularly if you want to know 00:42:41.72\00:42:43.29 what does the Bible say about the second coming of Jesus 00:42:43.32\00:42:46.19 or... or what have you. 00:42:46.23\00:42:47.70 Rosemary: What happens when you die? 00:42:47.73\00:42:49.06 Peter: Or what happens when you die 00:42:49.10\00:42:50.43 and I think not only is it useful for you 00:42:50.47\00:42:53.13 but then it enables you to be able to teach that 00:42:53.17\00:42:54.87 subject to somebody else. 00:42:54.90\00:42:56.24 John: That's right. Peter: So, yeah. 00:42:56.27\00:42:57.74 Rosemary: Yeah, that's right. 00:42:57.77\00:42:59.11 John: One of the important things too, Peter, 00:42:59.14\00:43:00.48 when you're studying the Word of God... 00:43:00.51\00:43:01.84 when you open it... we're told to ask for the Holy Spirit 00:43:01.88\00:43:04.51 to give us understanding and enlightenment to His Word. 00:43:04.55\00:43:07.45 That's an important part of studying the Bible 00:43:07.48\00:43:09.68 because if you just approach it from reading it as a book 00:43:09.72\00:43:13.59 and think you're going to get understanding, 00:43:13.62\00:43:15.19 I think you'll be very disappointed 00:43:15.22\00:43:16.62 but the Holy Spirit is there for you to call upon 00:43:16.66\00:43:21.10 to give you understanding. 00:43:21.13\00:43:22.46 Rosemary: Well, the Bible... Bible says that 00:43:22.50\00:43:24.20 spiritual things are spiritually discerned 00:43:24.23\00:43:26.13 and that we need the Spirit of Truth 00:43:26.20\00:43:28.10 to teach us and guide us into all truth. 00:43:28.14\00:43:30.01 Peter: I'm so glad you raised that John because 00:43:30.04\00:43:32.54 what I'm really... I suppose through this Program 00:43:32.57\00:43:35.04 I'm wanting to encourage people to do 00:43:35.08\00:43:37.15 is to have an on-going daily relationship with God... 00:43:37.18\00:43:40.52 daily devotions... 00:43:40.55\00:43:41.88 and it's so true that before I open the Bible, I want to pray. 00:43:41.92\00:43:46.96 I want to ask God to guide me because this... 00:43:47.02\00:43:50.19 the Bible talks about God the Father... 00:43:50.23\00:43:53.43 the Son and the Holy Spirit... 00:43:53.46\00:43:54.80 and the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit wrote a book 00:43:54.83\00:43:58.53 and this was the book... 00:43:58.57\00:44:00.37 it's the Holy Spirit that inspired the various writers 00:44:00.40\00:44:03.41 of the Bible to write down what they wrote 00:44:03.47\00:44:05.67 and so, the beauty of the Bible and the beauty of God is... 00:44:05.71\00:44:09.88 He's a living God... He's not a dead idol... 00:44:09.91\00:44:11.95 He's a living God... 00:44:11.98\00:44:13.42 He's there to be talked to today 00:44:13.45\00:44:15.45 and there to be listened to today 00:44:15.48\00:44:17.49 and so we can ask God, 00:44:17.52\00:44:19.32 "Please guide us through Your Holy Spirit 00:44:19.35\00:44:21.79 as we open Your Holy Word... teach us... 00:44:21.82\00:44:23.89 what you inspired others to write... 00:44:23.93\00:44:25.96 help me to understand. " 00:44:25.99\00:44:27.93 Very... very vital. 00:44:27.96\00:44:30.60 Rosemary: There's something you've said 00:44:30.63\00:44:33.34 that it's a two-way communication... 00:44:33.40\00:44:36.07 Peter: Yes. 00:44:36.10\00:44:37.44 Rosemary: We pray to God 00:44:37.47\00:44:38.97 and He speaks to us through His Word 00:44:39.01\00:44:41.08 which I think is very pretty... it's a beautiful concept. 00:44:41.11\00:44:44.15 Peter: Yeah, absolutely so you know, 00:44:44.18\00:44:46.11 I think one of my challenges perhaps before I was a Christian 00:44:46.15\00:44:50.99 or even when I was coming into the Christian faith is, 00:44:51.02\00:44:53.66 "Well, if God loves us so much, you know, where is He? 00:44:53.69\00:44:56.16 You know, I don't see Him with my eyes" 00:44:56.19\00:44:58.49 and the Bible says that... 00:44:58.53\00:44:59.86 I did a presentation not so long ago called, "Invisible" 00:44:59.89\00:45:02.43 and talked about the fact that God is invisible, 00:45:02.46\00:45:04.93 we face an invisible enemy 00:45:04.97\00:45:06.30 but we have an invisible friend as well in God and the angels 00:45:06.33\00:45:09.90 and... and so, how does God communicate with us 00:45:09.94\00:45:13.64 if He's not sitting here like you and I, face to face? 00:45:13.68\00:45:17.01 We don't have that privilege at the moment 00:45:17.05\00:45:19.48 because God is dealing with the "sin" problem 00:45:19.51\00:45:21.78 and when that is over, we will be brought back 00:45:21.82\00:45:24.05 into face to face contact 00:45:24.09\00:45:25.42 but if God were to appear on the earth today 00:45:25.45\00:45:27.89 in His unbridled, unveiled glory... 00:45:27.92\00:45:29.99 we'd all go ooof... 00:45:30.03\00:45:31.56 because of sin... the sin... we'd be consumed in a moment 00:45:31.59\00:45:35.20 so, God is dealing with the "sin" problem 00:45:35.23\00:45:37.17 so, it's actually for our own benefit 00:45:37.20\00:45:39.03 that we're not in His current unbridled presence 00:45:39.10\00:45:41.87 but, you're right... God wants a relationship with us 00:45:41.90\00:45:46.51 and that relationship is too full... 00:45:46.57\00:45:48.64 God has provided this incredible technology called "Prayer" 00:45:48.68\00:45:55.15 that while we are physically separated, 00:45:55.18\00:45:58.59 we can communicate through this incredible ministry 00:45:58.65\00:46:02.52 that God has given us in prayer 00:46:02.56\00:46:03.89 that we can talk to God anywhere we are... 00:46:03.93\00:46:06.39 any time, day or night... 00:46:06.43\00:46:08.30 and we can communicate our wants... our needs... 00:46:08.36\00:46:12.17 our gratitude... our praise to God 00:46:12.20\00:46:14.77 and then how does He talk to us? 00:46:14.80\00:46:17.31 Well, He talks to us primarily through His Word. 00:46:17.34\00:46:20.28 Now, He can talk to us through other people, 00:46:20.31\00:46:23.04 He can talk to us through the natural world... 00:46:23.08\00:46:25.78 He can talk to us through circumstance... 00:46:25.81\00:46:27.75 He can impress my mind... my heart through the Holy Spirit 00:46:27.78\00:46:31.29 He can convince my... convict my conscience, right? 00:46:31.32\00:46:36.39 He can communicate that way 00:46:36.42\00:46:38.19 and God has spoken audibly to people, 00:46:38.23\00:46:40.73 we read about that in the Bible but that's rare... 00:46:40.76\00:46:42.46 that doesn't often happen 00:46:42.50\00:46:44.70 and God has provided His Word right here 00:46:44.73\00:46:48.17 that He can talk to us 00:46:48.20\00:46:49.67 so, we can talk to Him in prayer He talks to us through His Word 00:46:49.70\00:46:52.77 and that's how we build relationship with God. 00:46:52.81\00:46:55.18 Rosemary: Hmmm... 00:46:55.21\00:46:56.54 John: And I also see... when we ask God for things, 00:46:56.58\00:46:59.58 when we have the answer... we have the evidence... 00:46:59.61\00:47:02.78 that gives us a reassurance that God is alive... 00:47:02.82\00:47:05.69 He is listening... 00:47:05.72\00:47:07.09 but sometimes we don't get answered the way we want to 00:47:07.12\00:47:09.76 but the point is, where our faith is strengthened 00:47:09.79\00:47:12.96 and we get to know God better 00:47:12.99\00:47:14.36 when He as a Father provides for us the things we've asked. 00:47:14.40\00:47:17.63 Peter: Yes. 00:47:17.67\00:47:19.03 John: And so, it's very clear that we have a God that loves us 00:47:19.07\00:47:21.57 it's just us that are putting the boundary... 00:47:21.60\00:47:24.27 putting something between Him and us... 00:47:24.31\00:47:26.78 it's our minds and our thinking 00:47:26.81\00:47:28.51 but our faith is strengthened when God reveals 00:47:28.54\00:47:30.51 the answers to our prayers. 00:47:30.55\00:47:32.48 Rosemary: Now, there's a verse here in John 14 00:47:32.51\00:47:35.35 and it's verse 6, "And Jesus said... " 00:47:35.38\00:47:39.52 it says, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, 00:47:39.55\00:47:44.19 the truth, and the life: 00:47:44.23\00:47:46.53 no man cometh unto the Father, but by me... " 00:47:46.56\00:47:51.87 and so, Jesus is saying, He's the truth 00:47:51.90\00:47:55.80 and He said that the... the One that He would send... 00:47:55.84\00:47:57.87 the Spirit of truth would lead us into all truth 00:47:57.91\00:47:59.97 so the Spirit of truth is going to lead us into 00:48:00.04\00:48:02.64 understanding Jesus... understanding who He is... 00:48:02.68\00:48:05.21 what He's about and why He had to come. 00:48:05.25\00:48:08.78 Why He is so important... 00:48:08.85\00:48:10.82 What is this thing about Jesus? 00:48:10.89\00:48:12.35 The Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of truth 00:48:12.39\00:48:15.39 will lead us into understanding about Jesus 00:48:15.42\00:48:18.39 because Jesus is the truth. 00:48:18.43\00:48:20.60 Peter: That's right... and I like... 00:48:20.63\00:48:22.66 when I read this verse... when He says, 00:48:22.70\00:48:24.47 "I am the way, the truth, and the life... " 00:48:24.50\00:48:26.20 you know the truth is not simply a list of beliefs that we have, 00:48:26.23\00:48:32.14 it's not a list of things to do 00:48:32.17\00:48:34.14 or a list of... of prayers to pray... 00:48:34.18\00:48:38.01 the truth is a person primarily and that's the person of Jesus 00:48:38.08\00:48:42.98 and so, all the things that we learn in the Bible 00:48:43.02\00:48:47.06 are little facets of Jesus... 00:48:47.09\00:48:49.22 they teach us something more about the character of God 00:48:49.26\00:48:51.76 which is Jesus in the flesh... 00:48:51.79\00:48:53.33 you know, Jesus... He is God in the flesh... 00:48:53.36\00:48:55.20 and the other thing... 00:48:55.23\00:48:58.63 in a couple of chapters' time He'll say, 00:48:58.67\00:49:00.94 He's praying... Jesus is praying to the Father, 00:49:00.97\00:49:03.94 He says, "Sanctify them" that's the believers... 00:49:03.97\00:49:06.88 by Your Word... 00:49:06.94\00:49:08.88 Sanctify them by Your truth, 00:49:08.91\00:49:11.55 Thy Word is truth. " 00:49:11.58\00:49:12.91 In other words, set believers apart by the truth 00:49:12.95\00:49:17.05 and what is the truth? It's the Word. 00:49:17.09\00:49:18.99 And so, we have... 00:49:19.02\00:49:20.36 I think about the world we live in 00:49:20.39\00:49:25.39 John and Rosemary 00:49:25.43\00:49:27.13 and there's a great deal of confusion in the world 00:49:27.20\00:49:31.57 about so many things and how reassuring it would be 00:49:31.60\00:49:35.97 to know what is the truth of these matters 00:49:36.00\00:49:38.41 and what is the truth about how we should respond 00:49:38.44\00:49:43.88 to the world around us... 00:49:43.91\00:49:45.28 how we should respond to each other... 00:49:45.31\00:49:46.82 how we should relate to God. 00:49:46.85\00:49:49.22 All that is truth and Jesus, of course, is the truth 00:49:49.25\00:49:53.36 but the things that He's revealed in His Word 00:49:53.39\00:49:55.26 reveal those truths that help us to not be confused, 00:49:55.29\00:49:58.93 it... you know, we talked at the beginning 00:49:58.96\00:50:01.66 about coming out of darkness and into the light, 00:50:01.70\00:50:03.87 and that's really... those metaphors are really 00:50:03.90\00:50:06.00 the darkness of confusion... the light of God's truth 00:50:06.03\00:50:10.21 and that's so valuable to us. 00:50:10.24\00:50:12.31 John: In John chapter 5 verse 39, the Bible says, 00:50:12.34\00:50:15.14 "Search the scriptures; 00:50:15.18\00:50:16.64 for in them ye think ye have eternal life: 00:50:16.68\00:50:19.41 and they are they which testify of me. " 00:50:19.45\00:50:22.12 So, Jesus really is at the center of the Word of God. 00:50:22.15\00:50:25.92 He is the truth... 00:50:25.95\00:50:27.29 He's the One that's going to reveal to you 00:50:27.32\00:50:29.39 about eternal life... 00:50:29.42\00:50:30.93 that's what we are privileged to know 00:50:30.96\00:50:34.30 and to experience. 00:50:34.33\00:50:35.66 Rosemary: I had a number of people say, 00:50:35.70\00:50:38.43 "What is truth to you is truth to you 00:50:38.47\00:50:41.20 and what is truth to me is truth to me. " 00:50:41.24\00:50:43.91 So, in other words, everybody can pick and choose 00:50:43.94\00:50:46.31 what they want to have for truth 00:50:46.34\00:50:47.78 and it doesn't work that way 00:50:47.81\00:50:50.48 because what might be truth for you 00:50:50.55\00:50:52.15 might trample on what truth is for me 00:50:52.18\00:50:54.82 and it's comforting to me to know 00:50:54.85\00:50:57.45 God actually has absolute truth on every subject. 00:50:57.49\00:51:01.92 There's nothing that He doesn't cover... 00:51:01.96\00:51:04.63 that there is actually absolute truth on everything 00:51:04.66\00:51:09.80 and this is what reveals absolute truth to us, 00:51:09.83\00:51:12.90 it doesn't have to be what we think it might be 00:51:12.93\00:51:16.00 or what we would prefer it to be... 00:51:16.04\00:51:17.91 there is truth. 00:51:17.94\00:51:19.27 Peter: Yeah, then I think that is very important 00:51:19.31\00:51:21.31 in the era that we're living, 00:51:21.34\00:51:22.68 it's called relative truth isn't it, 00:51:22.71\00:51:25.21 that you've got your truth and I've got my truth 00:51:25.25\00:51:27.22 and we... we... kind of... 00:51:27.25\00:51:28.98 Rosemary: Pluralism. 00:51:29.02\00:51:30.39 Peter: Yeah, it's a pluralistic notion 00:51:30.42\00:51:32.15 and, of course, what that actually does is 00:51:32.22\00:51:34.36 destroy the notion of truth 00:51:34.39\00:51:35.76 because if truth can be anything to anyone at any time, 00:51:35.79\00:51:40.06 and is ever changing depending on which room you are in 00:51:40.10\00:51:43.10 or which chair you're sitting in or... 00:51:43.13\00:51:44.53 Rosemary: Or whether you burnt your toast that morning. 00:51:44.57\00:51:46.27 Peter: Yeah, so, it kind of... 00:51:46.30\00:51:49.10 it destroys the very meaning of the word "truth" really, 00:51:49.14\00:51:53.58 because what that means is truth can be anything 00:51:53.61\00:51:56.54 and if it can be anything, then it's... 00:51:56.58\00:51:57.91 Rosemary: Not truth. 00:51:57.95\00:51:59.28 Peter: Not anything at all, really. 00:51:59.31\00:52:00.95 Rosemary: Actually, truth becomes a lie. 00:52:00.98\00:52:02.32 Peter: Yeah, truth... it becomes a deception really, 00:52:02.35\00:52:05.79 I suppose and what it's saying here 00:52:05.82\00:52:08.32 in the fact that Jesus has said, 00:52:08.36\00:52:11.59 "I am the way, the truth, and the life... " 00:52:11.63\00:52:14.00 in this verse here in 5:39, that you read John, 00:52:14.03\00:52:16.33 it says, "For in them ye think ye have eternal life: 00:52:16.36\00:52:18.53 and these are they which testify of me. " 00:52:18.57\00:52:20.27 When Jesus spoke those words, only the Old Testament existed 00:52:20.30\00:52:25.64 and this is significant because there are a number of places 00:52:25.67\00:52:29.41 and we won't go to them all today 00:52:29.44\00:52:31.15 but there are a number of places in the New Testament 00:52:31.18\00:52:32.98 where Jesus just affirms the Old Testament 00:52:33.01\00:52:35.08 over and over again 00:52:35.12\00:52:36.45 and here He's saying to the religious authorities, 00:52:36.48\00:52:39.69 "You're searching the Scriptures 00:52:39.72\00:52:42.32 but they're actually pointing to Me. " 00:52:42.36\00:52:44.56 That's really what He's saying 00:52:44.59\00:52:46.80 and so, He's saying that's the Old Testament, 00:52:46.83\00:52:49.36 now, of course the New Testament points to Jesus too. 00:52:49.40\00:52:51.67 But for many Christians... for some Christian churches, 00:52:51.70\00:52:56.34 they'll only provide New Testaments 00:52:56.37\00:52:58.27 and they're missing the value 00:52:58.31\00:53:01.14 of what Jesus is trying to teach us in this verse... 00:53:01.18\00:53:04.05 is that the whole of the Old Testament 00:53:04.08\00:53:06.11 is talking about Him... it's pointing to Him. 00:53:06.15\00:53:09.15 In the context of the stories... 00:53:09.18\00:53:11.69 there are so many stories in the Bible in the Old Testament 00:53:11.72\00:53:15.19 that in and of themselves they're great stories 00:53:15.22\00:53:18.93 about how God interacts with people 00:53:18.96\00:53:20.56 but they're also... tells us something 00:53:20.60\00:53:23.47 about the story of Jesus as well. 00:53:23.50\00:53:25.07 John: And I urge you to take a break there for a moment 00:53:25.10\00:53:26.94 because we have an address roll where you can write to us... 00:53:26.97\00:53:30.04 we are a faith-based ministry 00:53:30.07\00:53:33.27 and we would like to have you contact us 00:53:33.31\00:53:36.41 and tell us about what you would like about these programs 00:53:36.44\00:53:40.42 or anything else... maybe about what Peter is saying 00:53:40.45\00:53:42.65 and you can do so at this address: 00:53:42.68\00:53:44.45 music... 00:53:44.49\00:53:48.96 If you would like to contact 3ABN Australia, 00:53:48.99\00:53:50.96 you may do so in the following ways, 00:53:50.99\00:53:52.63 you may write to: 3ABN Australia 00:53:52.66\00:53:55.36 PO Box 752 Morisset, New South Wales 2264 00:53:55.40\00:54:00.10 Australia 00:54:00.14\00:54:01.67 That's PO Box 752 Morisset, New South Wales 2264 00:54:01.70\00:54:06.71 Australia 00:54:06.74\00:54:08.08 or you may call: 02-4973-3456 00:54:08.11\00:54:12.81 that's: 02-4973-3456 00:54:12.85\00:54:17.09 from 8:30 a. m. to 5 p. m. " 00:55:23.42\00:55:25.89 So, unpack that for the people who are watching, please. 00:55:25.95\00:55:30.09 Peter: Okay, yeah, so, it says, 00:55:30.13\00:55:31.46 "To the law and to the testimony... " 00:55:31.49\00:55:33.50 and what that really is referring to 00:55:33.53\00:55:35.50 is the Law of Moses 00:55:35.53\00:55:36.87 which is the first five books of the Bible 00:55:36.90\00:55:38.47 and then the testimony would be the testimony of the prophets... 00:55:38.50\00:55:41.77 what the prophets have said 00:55:41.80\00:55:43.14 that God has inspired them to say, 00:55:43.17\00:55:44.94 of course Isaiah was a prophet himself. 00:55:44.97\00:55:46.57 But... so it's talking about the Word of God 00:55:46.61\00:55:50.35 as it existed to that time... 00:55:50.38\00:55:52.28 talking about the Word of God... 00:55:52.31\00:55:53.88 "To the law and to the testimony, 00:55:53.92\00:55:55.42 if they do not speak according to this word, 00:55:55.45\00:55:57.49 it is because there is no light in them. " 00:55:57.55\00:55:59.22 Rosemary: Hmmm... 00:55:59.25\00:56:00.59 Peter: I think sometimes we are tempted to go to the Word of God 00:56:00.62\00:56:03.12 and we will read it and we will say, 00:56:03.16\00:56:04.79 "I really like that section, I think that... you know... 00:56:04.83\00:56:07.60 I really enjoy the promises that God has given me there... " 00:56:07.63\00:56:10.73 but then we come to another section that we don't agree with 00:56:10.77\00:56:13.84 and we might say, "Well, that's all they knew back then" 00:56:13.87\00:56:17.27 or "That was their perspective for that period of time... " 00:56:17.31\00:56:20.64 Rosemary: Or we heard someone say, 00:56:20.68\00:56:22.01 "Well, of course we all know that Jonah is not real... " 00:56:22.04\00:56:23.91 Peter: Yeah, yeah, yeah... that's right. 00:56:23.95\00:56:25.41 Rosemary: Jesus quoted from Jonah as a real person. 00:56:25.45\00:56:26.98 Peter: Exactly, and I think one of the... 00:56:27.02\00:56:28.52 probably the classics in regard to this would be Creation, 00:56:28.55\00:56:31.95 right? 00:56:31.99\00:56:33.32 So, the Bible says, "God created in six days... " 00:56:33.36\00:56:36.93 the world generally believes in million and billions of years 00:56:36.96\00:56:41.03 and that's what I believed as... 00:56:41.06\00:56:42.66 as someone who believed in Evolution 00:56:42.70\00:56:44.27 and so, the question really is: 00:56:44.30\00:56:46.40 "How am I going to approach the Bible? 00:56:46.43\00:56:50.57 Is it the Word of God to me 00:56:50.61\00:56:52.54 or is it a book that I can decide 00:56:52.57\00:56:56.18 which bits are valid and which bits are not?" 00:56:56.21\00:56:58.05 in terms of, you know, if I were to say that 00:56:58.08\00:57:04.45 I might take a Scientist's view more than the Bible's view. 00:57:04.49\00:57:09.89 This book has authority... 00:57:09.92\00:57:11.79 it was written by the Author of the universe... 00:57:11.83\00:57:13.76 you know, the Author of the universe 00:57:13.80\00:57:15.80 and to come into this space that I'm recognizing 00:57:15.83\00:57:19.60 that everything that I understand needs to come into... 00:57:19.63\00:57:23.41 be subject to the authority of the Word of God. 00:57:23.44\00:57:25.94 Rosemary: Very good. 00:57:25.97\00:57:27.31 John: You know, Pete, we've been really glad to have you 00:57:27.34\00:57:29.24 on the Program... but we really didn't cover everything 00:57:29.28\00:57:31.25 that we wanted to cover, 00:57:31.28\00:57:32.61 we're just scratching the surface 00:57:32.65\00:57:33.98 but we would like to encourage you... all of you... 00:57:34.02\00:57:36.48 to dig into the Word of God, 00:57:36.52\00:57:38.22 especially at this time in this world's history 00:57:38.25\00:57:40.36 and we look forward to seeing you next time. 00:57:40.39\00:57:42.42 May God richly bless you... until then. 00:57:42.46\00:57:44.69
