" 00:03:08.82\00:03:10.15 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:03:10.19\00:03:11.52 Rosemary: Let's... let's find out 00:03:11.55\00:03:12.89 what the chocolates are in the Bible. 00:03:12.92\00:03:14.26 John: Yeah, you've chosen a text... 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.62 Rosemary: You've got two texts... 00:03:15.66\00:03:16.99 John: Two texts... and one is found in Jeremiah chapter 30 00:03:17.03\00:03:20.33 and verse 17 and it goes like this, 00:03:20.36\00:03:22.76 it says, "For I will restore health unto thee, 00:03:22.80\00:03:26.23 and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD... " 00:03:26.27\00:03:29.60 now, you obviously chose that for a specific reason, 00:03:29.64\00:03:32.47 tell us a little bit about how it applies to you. 00:03:32.51\00:03:35.31 Kathlyn: Well, for the past couple of years, 00:03:35.34\00:03:37.71 I've been struggling with digestive issues 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.08 after I had Adult Acne 00:03:40.12\00:03:41.48 which we'll get into a little bit later 00:03:41.55\00:03:42.88 and then, I was put on antibiotics for a year 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.69 and I had got Candida and a plethora of other issues 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.69 and so, I went on a path of healing 00:03:47.72\00:03:50.63 and there is this whole health movement 00:03:50.66\00:03:53.56 that is trying to take Jesus out 00:03:53.60\00:03:54.96 and I started to realize that Jesus is the health message 00:03:55.00\00:03:57.90 and so, I started to find different verses in the Bible 00:03:57.93\00:04:00.80 and kind of insert my name... and that verse... 00:04:00.84\00:04:03.20 the reason why I chose it is because 00:04:03.27\00:04:04.71 I would dwell on that when I was in pain 00:04:04.74\00:04:07.28 or trying to figure out what was wrong with me... 00:04:07.31\00:04:10.51 I would just... I would put my name there. 00:04:10.55\00:04:11.88 John: I like that where you would put your name 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.45 and it says, "For Kathlyn will restore health... 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.22 Rosemary: "I will restore health unto Kathlyn. " 00:04:17.25\00:04:19.59 John: "And I will heal thee of thy wounds. " 00:04:19.62\00:04:21.52 Kathleen: Yeah. John: So, it really is... 00:04:21.56\00:04:23.29 you need to put your name in there sometimes. 00:04:23.32\00:04:25.06 Kathlyn: Yeah... yeah. 00:04:25.09\00:04:26.46 Rosemary: Well, then, I've got another verse 00:04:26.49\00:04:28.00 and it's Psalm 13 verse 6, I'll read it two ways... 00:04:28.03\00:04:32.30 okay, first of all, how it says here, 00:04:32.33\00:04:34.34 "I will sing unto the Lord, 00:04:34.37\00:04:35.97 because He hath dealt bountifully with me. " 00:04:36.00\00:04:39.27 But then, "Kathleen will sing unto the Lord, 00:04:39.31\00:04:42.88 because He hath dealt bountifully with her. " 00:04:42.91\00:04:47.22 Kathlyn: Yeah, I just feel like that verse 00:04:47.28\00:04:51.55 is my gratitude to God 00:04:51.59\00:04:53.86 because in my mid-20s, I kind of was... like... 00:04:53.89\00:04:57.33 "Oh, God, why this have to happen?" 00:04:57.36\00:04:58.86 and "Why couldn't I've gone to... " 00:24:20.02\00:24:21.36 no, you can... people party everywhere... 00:24:21.39\00:24:23.12 people party in Tennessee... 00:24:23.19\00:24:24.86 people party in Kansas... like, 00:24:24.89\00:24:26.46 you'll find what you want wherever you go, and so... 00:24:26.49\00:24:29.30 whatever you want... you'll find wherever you go 00:24:29.33\00:24:32.10 so, I... I loved PUC and I... I really enjoyed my time there. 00:24:32.13\00:24:36.00 Rosemary: Is other things that they find necessarily 00:24:36.04\00:24:37.84 fun and okay and good? 00:24:37.87\00:24:39.67 Kathlyn: I'm... I'm sorry... 00:24:39.71\00:24:41.04 Rosemary: Are the things that they find at college 00:24:41.08\00:24:42.74 necessarily good or can they be bad? 00:24:42.78\00:24:46.11 Kathlyn: Oh, they can definitely be bad... 00:24:46.15\00:24:47.65 I mean, you can go to the most conservative Adventist College 00:24:47.68\00:24:50.59 and you'll... if you want to find crack cocaine... 00:24:50.62\00:24:52.85 you will find crack cocaine... 00:24:52.89\00:24:54.22 do you know what I mean? Like... 00:24:54.26\00:24:55.59 if you go to the most liberal Adventist College 00:24:55.62\00:24:57.86 and you want to be a vegan, vegetarian, hippie, 00:24:57.89\00:25:00.10 earth-loving... you can do that too, you know, 00:25:00.13\00:25:02.26 and so, you'll find what you want. 00:25:02.30\00:25:05.00 Rosemary: So, it sort of depends on who you find 00:25:05.03\00:25:06.87 your friends to be? 00:25:06.90\00:25:08.24 Kathlyn: Oh, yeah, I just read a book called: Friendfluence... 00:25:08.27\00:25:10.67 it's not even Christian but it's saying, 00:25:10.71\00:25:12.04 "You're the average of the five people 00:25:12.07\00:25:13.41 you spend the most time with... " 00:25:13.44\00:25:14.78 and I read this about five years ago 00:25:14.81\00:25:16.14 and started to really think about who I spend time with 00:25:16.18\00:25:18.45 and who you date in college will influence your habits incredibly 00:25:18.48\00:25:22.92 who you spend time with... I mean... 00:25:22.95\00:25:25.75 the influence is powerful. 00:25:25.79\00:25:28.32 Rosemary: It's interesting you say that 00:25:28.39\00:25:29.72 because right towards the beginning you said 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.33 that your dad was telling you this 00:25:32.39\00:25:34.80 but your friends were doing this... 00:25:34.86\00:25:37.50 and so, you know, drinking soda 00:25:37.53\00:25:40.14 when your dad wanted you to drink carrot and apple juice 00:25:40.17\00:25:43.41 but your friends were drinking soda 00:25:43.44\00:25:45.67 so, you drank soda. 00:25:45.74\00:25:47.48 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:25:47.51\00:25:48.84 Rosemary: So, that had a great influence. 00:25:48.88\00:25:50.21 Kathlyn: Yeah... yeah... definitely. 00:25:50.25\00:25:52.28 So, where were we? 00:25:52.31\00:25:54.18 Rosemary: You were in Maui. 00:25:54.22\00:25:55.55 Kathlyn: Okay, Maui... no, but where we in my story? 00:25:55.58\00:25:57.12 Oh no, so the "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" thing happened, 00:25:57.15\00:25:58.79 can I share that real quickly? 00:25:58.85\00:26:00.19 I watched the documentary... I bought it for my dad... 00:26:00.22\00:26:03.89 I was like, "Merry Christmas, you're right... 00:26:03.93\00:26:05.86 I had to change my diet this whole time... " 00:26:05.89\00:26:07.80 but I bought a juicer an Omega 8006... 00:26:07.83\00:26:11.37 I don't know if anyone cares, 00:26:11.40\00:26:12.73 but I bought a juicer and I started juicing... 00:26:12.77\00:26:14.94 I went totally plant-based... 00:26:14.97\00:26:16.64 cut out meat... cut out cheese, cut out wheat... 00:26:16.67\00:26:18.51 and I know that it sounds like I'm cutting a lot of stuff out 00:26:18.54\00:26:21.24 but then I started to eat, like, zucchini and mint 00:26:21.28\00:26:24.21 and eggplant and tomatoes, like there's so many vegetables 00:26:24.25\00:26:27.28 and you know in Thailand... so many fruits... 00:26:27.32\00:26:29.68 mangoes and pineapple and dragon fruit... 00:26:29.75\00:26:31.95 Rosemary: Rambutan... Kathlyn: Rambutan... 00:26:31.99\00:26:34.09 Rosemary: Mangosteen and... and Custard Apples. 00:26:34.16\00:26:37.13 John: And Durian. 00:26:37.16\00:26:38.49 Kathlyn: And Durian... I was going to say that 00:26:38.53\00:26:39.86 so, I never have really eaten or liked durian 00:26:39.89\00:26:41.50 and then, when I became, like, health conscious, 00:26:41.56\00:26:43.43 I can... I can eat a little piece of durian. 00:26:43.47\00:26:45.27 Rosemary: I can't... Kathlyn: You can't? 00:26:45.33\00:26:46.77 Rosemary: No. 00:26:46.80\00:26:48.14 John: You can eat a little piece I'll eat the rest 00:26:48.17\00:26:49.50 because I really like it. 00:26:49.54\00:26:50.87 Kathlyn: You sound like my sister, yeah 00:26:50.91\00:26:52.24 but... there's so much, you know, healthy... 00:26:52.27\00:26:53.61 but anyway, I sent my... I started to follow the blog 00:26:53.64\00:26:57.71 that Joe Cross had on his reboot website 00:26:57.75\00:26:59.58 and one day his Producer sent out a mass e-mail 00:26:59.61\00:27:02.22 to all the people and she's like, 00:27:02.25\00:27:03.75 "We're flying out 12 people to New York City 00:27:03.79\00:27:06.19 to share their health testimony... 00:27:06.29\00:27:08.59 how much weight did you lose juicing 00:27:08.62\00:27:10.53 after watching: Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 00:27:10.56\00:27:12.33 and how did the documentary change your life? 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.03 And I thought, "Well, I didn't really lose weight juicing 00:27:14.06\00:27:18.47 and I didn't... but I did it to heal my acne 00:27:18.50\00:27:20.54 and my acne was healed by the way 00:27:20.60\00:27:22.04 I said, "Maybe I'll send my story 00:27:22.07\00:27:23.94 and put a little twist on it... " 00:27:24.01\00:27:25.84 and so, I sent her my story, 00:27:25.87\00:27:27.98 she said, "Kat, your e-mail gave me goosebumps... 00:27:28.04\00:27:29.58 we'd love to fly you out to New York to be in our commercial 00:27:29.61\00:27:31.91 and to meet Joe Cross. " 00:27:31.95\00:27:33.31 so, I got to meet him in New York... 00:27:33.35\00:27:34.95 I did the commercial... 00:27:34.98\00:27:36.32 and we all sat in a circle before we did 00:27:36.35\00:27:37.85 and everyone in the circle was like, 00:27:37.89\00:27:39.65 "I lost a 100 pounds... " 00:27:39.69\00:27:41.16 John: A 100 pounds? 00:27:41.19\00:27:42.66 Kathlyn: Yeah, and another person's like, 00:27:42.69\00:27:44.03 "I lost 80 pounds... " 00:27:44.06\00:27:46.03 and they all look at me, like, waiting 00:27:46.06\00:27:47.40 and I was like, "I lost 10 pounds 00:27:47.43\00:27:48.96 but that's not why I'm here... " 00:27:49.00\00:27:50.60 and they all looked at me. Rosemary: I lost acne... 00:27:50.63\00:27:52.13 Kathlyn: I'm like, "I lost my acne... " 00:27:52.17\00:27:54.17 and then they were like, "Why are you here 00:27:54.20\00:27:55.54 if you lost ten pounds?" 00:27:55.57\00:27:56.91 You know, and I was like, "Oh no... " 00:27:56.94\00:27:58.27 and then I shared my pictures and they understood 00:27:58.31\00:27:59.64 but there are a lot of young girls 00:27:59.67\00:28:01.01 that are struggling with acne 00:28:01.04\00:28:02.38 and a ton of money is going into all these harsh creams 00:28:02.41\00:28:04.48 and... I mean... you know, 00:28:04.51\00:28:06.68 there's nothing wrong with wanting to have a smooth face, 00:28:06.72\00:28:08.62 but people are just going... 00:28:08.68\00:28:10.49 spending their money on the wrong things, 00:28:10.52\00:28:12.32 so, I just wanted to share with people that 00:28:12.35\00:28:14.12 it's... you are what you absorb 00:28:14.16\00:28:15.69 and what you put on your skin is also what you absorb 00:28:15.72\00:28:19.13 so... 00:28:19.19\00:28:20.53 Rosemary: And the antibiotics you're on 00:28:20.56\00:28:22.83 would have been causing more problems in your gut. 00:28:22.86\00:28:25.53 Kathlyn: Yeah, that is actually something I've struggled with 00:28:25.57\00:28:28.44 for the past five years... I'm not kidding... 00:28:28.47\00:28:30.31 the antibiotics was like a gut bomb... totally affected... 00:28:30.34\00:28:33.07 Rosemary: Eight months... Kathlyn: Almost a year, yeah, 00:28:33.11\00:28:35.68 like, it was a really long time 00:28:35.71\00:28:37.05 and you know when I did that commercial in New York, 00:28:37.08\00:28:40.45 that was like my first stage of healing... 00:28:40.48\00:28:42.42 my acne was healed but I remember still... 00:28:42.45\00:28:44.55 and I was learning about digestive enzymes... 00:28:44.59\00:28:46.62 and I was learning about probiotics... 00:28:46.65\00:28:47.99 I was learning about the microbiome 00:28:48.02\00:28:49.36 and since then, I've, like, 00:28:49.39\00:28:51.19 reached different layers of my health 00:28:51.23\00:28:52.93 but I became obsessed with organic fruits and vegetables, 00:28:52.96\00:28:55.23 as you know, we've been talking about 00:28:55.26\00:28:56.67 organic fruits and vegetables. 00:28:56.70\00:28:58.13 John: Hmmm... hmmm... so, you've... 00:28:58.17\00:28:59.50 you've... seeing you've gone through that experience, 00:28:59.53\00:29:02.40 you have a desire to let other people know. 00:29:02.44\00:29:05.11 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:29:05.14\00:29:06.47 John: And I know there's probably a lot of young people 00:29:06.51\00:29:07.94 out there listening and wondering, 00:29:07.98\00:29:09.54 "Well, about college and what mom and dad are telling me, 00:29:09.58\00:29:12.05 to do and how... it doesn't seem fair... " 00:29:12.08\00:29:15.62 but in reality, you are looking now back in retrospect 00:29:15.65\00:29:20.89 and you're seeing that 00:29:20.96\00:29:23.43 there was a better choice you could have made 00:29:23.46\00:29:26.29 because it really amounts to what choices you make in life 00:29:26.33\00:29:29.36 and really, you've come now to the realization... 00:29:29.40\00:29:33.57 dad was right... you know... 00:29:33.60\00:29:35.74 and so, as a young person... 00:29:35.77\00:29:37.81 I'll say, you are still are a young person, 00:29:37.87\00:29:40.14 you want others to know that... 00:29:40.18\00:29:42.28 they don't have to go through what you went through, do they? 00:29:42.34\00:29:44.01 Kathlyn: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:29:44.05\00:29:45.45 I told Rosemary when I e-mailed her, 00:29:45.48\00:29:46.85 I said, "My suffering was a cause of my own rebellion" 00:29:46.92\00:29:49.95 and you read that in the Bible, 00:29:49.98\00:29:51.69 and by the way, during this time period, 00:29:51.75\00:29:53.46 I started reading my Bible again... 00:29:53.49\00:29:54.82 and really following the NEWSTART Program 00:29:54.86\00:29:58.93 that we grew up with: 00:29:58.96\00:30:00.30 Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperance, Air, 00:30:00.33\00:30:02.86 Rest... Trust in God... 00:30:02.93\00:30:04.27 I really started to follow that like, 00:30:04.30\00:30:05.83 I became... not obsessed but like... 00:30:05.87\00:30:07.34 I wanted to make... purify my life as much as possible... 00:30:07.37\00:30:10.44 no more perfume... 00:30:10.47\00:30:11.81 I stopped eating chocolate... 00:30:11.84\00:30:13.17 I stopped wearing harsh... like, Makeups and stuff... 00:30:13.21\00:30:17.15 I started using essential oils... 00:30:17.18\00:30:18.88 I mean, I wanted to purify my life as much as possible 00:30:18.91\00:30:22.55 and I became obsessed with clean air... 00:30:22.58\00:30:24.89 clean water... and that's kind of why I moved to Maui... 00:30:24.92\00:30:27.42 Maui, Hawaii... and I was a WWOOFER 00:30:27.46\00:30:28.96 which is Worldwide Opportunity... 00:30:28.99\00:30:30.43 Rosemary: Yeah, tell us some of these stories in Maui... 00:30:30.46\00:30:33.09 Kathlyn: Yes, so because of PUC sending me to Oahu 00:30:33.13\00:30:36.30 as a College Recruiter, 00:30:36.33\00:30:37.67 I decided that I had to move to Hawaii some day 00:30:37.70\00:30:39.93 and I chose Maui because my family had gone there 00:30:39.97\00:30:42.47 when we were younger and I asked dad, 00:30:42.50\00:30:44.27 "What's the most beautiful place you've ever been in?" 00:30:44.31\00:30:45.91 He said, "Maui... " 00:30:45.94\00:30:47.48 and so, I... I kind of always had Maui in the back of my head 00:30:47.51\00:30:50.35 and my mom loved Maui and... yeah... 00:30:50.38\00:30:53.78 so, I wanted to move to Maui, Hawaii but I didn't know a soul 00:30:53.82\00:30:56.45 and I knew I wanted to be a WWOOFER because I was like, 00:30:56.48\00:30:59.19 "I want to learn how to grow my own produce... " 00:30:59.22\00:31:00.72 Rosemary: Okay, just explain for those who don't know 00:31:00.76\00:31:02.52 what is WWOOFER is. 00:31:02.56\00:31:03.89 Kathlyn: Yeah, it's a really funny word... 00:31:03.93\00:31:05.26 WWOOFER is: Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms 00:31:05.29\00:31:10.20 and my cousin had been a WWOOFER 00:31:10.23\00:31:12.33 and I had different friends... 00:31:12.37\00:31:14.40 and pretty much you go to the website and you pay 30 dollars, 00:31:14.44\00:31:17.77 I paid $30 for the year 00:31:17.81\00:31:19.14 and then you have access to all these organic farms 00:31:19.17\00:31:20.98 in North America and even the world, I think, 00:31:21.01\00:31:23.08 but I stuck to North America. 00:31:23.11\00:31:24.45 Rosemary: And you can go and look there. 00:31:24.48\00:31:25.95 Kathlyn: Yeah and you... you get to live there for free 00:31:25.98\00:31:28.25 but you have to put in a couple of hours each day... 00:31:28.28\00:31:30.49 you have to... you have to do your work... 00:31:30.55\00:31:31.89 like, you have to e-mail the family and say, 00:31:31.92\00:31:33.25 "What do you expect of me?" 00:31:33.29\00:31:34.62 "How many people are there?" 00:31:34.66\00:31:35.99 "How many hours each day?" blah, blah, blah... 00:31:36.02\00:31:38.13 and so, I knew I wanted to be a WWOOFER 00:31:38.16\00:31:40.16 when I moved to Maui. 00:31:40.20\00:31:41.53 John: So, you did that for four years? 00:31:41.56\00:31:43.03 Kathlyn: No, I did that for a month. 00:31:43.06\00:31:44.80 I saw... I wanted to be a WWOOFER 00:31:44.83\00:31:46.50 and then I wanted to work at a restaurant called: 00:31:46.53\00:31:48.60 Mama's Fish House Restaurant and that's another story 00:31:48.64\00:31:51.17 and I prayed to God that I wanted to do both those things 00:31:51.21\00:31:53.74 and both those things happened 00:31:53.78\00:31:55.34 but, I guess I'll start with the WWOOFing... 00:31:55.38\00:31:57.68 I wanted to be a WWOOFER and at this time, 00:31:57.71\00:31:59.91 I started wanting to keep the Sabbath again 00:31:59.98\00:32:02.12 and I said, "I want to start keeping the Sabbath again... " 00:32:02.15\00:32:04.69 and so, that was in my heart 00:32:04.72\00:32:06.25 and I started applying to different farms on Maui 00:32:06.29\00:32:08.72 and I applied to this one farm and it seemed really legit... 00:32:08.76\00:32:11.46 they had a website... 00:32:11.49\00:32:12.83 they had like 15 WWOOFERs at one time, 00:32:12.86\00:32:14.50 and I wrote them and they were writing me back, 00:32:14.53\00:32:16.77 they were engaged... they seemed interested... 00:32:16.80\00:32:19.03 and then I said, "Okay, but by the way, 00:32:19.07\00:32:21.00 I would like to have Sabbath... Saturday off 00:32:21.04\00:32:23.61 because I keep the Sabbath... " never wrote me back... 00:32:23.64\00:32:26.01 just completely stopped writing me... 00:32:26.04\00:32:28.44 and I was hurt... I was like, "What?" 00:32:28.48\00:32:30.61 And I talked to my dad and he's like, 00:32:30.65\00:32:32.75 "Kat, this door closed 00:32:32.78\00:32:34.12 because a better one is opening... " 00:32:34.15\00:32:36.38 and we went to the website and on their website 00:32:36.42\00:32:39.22 they were into stuff like talking to the dead... 00:32:39.25\00:32:42.02 Rosemary: Ah... 00:32:42.06\00:32:43.39 Kathlyn: Yeah, no... I mean it was very "spiritualistic" 00:32:43.43\00:32:46.39 kind of stuff and my... 00:32:46.43\00:32:47.76 my dad was looking at the website, he's like, "I don't" 00:32:47.80\00:32:49.66 John: I don't think it's a good place. 00:32:49.70\00:32:51.13 Kathlyn: He said, "This is a blessing that this door closed, 00:32:51.17\00:32:53.13 you don't really want to be there... " 00:32:53.17\00:32:54.57 so, I had to just have faith 00:32:54.60\00:32:56.64 that God had a better door opened 00:32:56.67\00:32:58.07 and so I... I went to the website the next day 00:32:58.11\00:33:01.34 and there was a new Ad that popped up that wasn't there 00:33:01.38\00:33:03.38 and it was like, "Hi, we're a couple from San Diego, 00:33:03.41\00:33:05.38 we're living in Maui now 00:33:05.41\00:33:06.75 we're looking for one WWOOFER... no partying... no drinking... 00:33:06.78\00:33:09.58 vegetarian... we have an ohana... 00:33:09.62\00:33:11.45 we have papayas, pineapples, coconuts... " 00:33:11.49\00:33:14.19 John: Sounds good. 00:33:14.22\00:33:15.56 Kathlyn: And the thing is... I had already... 00:33:15.59\00:33:17.59 I had been dorming for eight years at this point 00:33:17.63\00:33:19.83 and I was like, "I am done with the sharing 00:33:19.89\00:33:22.00 I'm done with the whole boarding-dorming thing... " 00:33:22.03\00:33:24.83 and I wanted to be the only WWOOFER... 00:33:24.87\00:33:26.70 and they wanted only one WWOOFER 00:33:26.74\00:33:28.60 and so, I called them and I was like, "Hi... " 00:33:28.64\00:33:31.14 and it was... their names were Gordie and Sharon 00:33:31.17\00:33:33.48 and I was like, "Hi... I saw your Ad... " 00:33:33.54\00:33:35.41 and Gordie's like, "We just posted it last night" 00:33:35.44\00:33:37.35 I was like, "Okay, whatever... I'm your girl... 00:33:37.38\00:33:39.25 I don't care when you posted it, 00:33:39.28\00:33:40.82 I'm your girl to be your WWOOFER." 00:33:40.85\00:33:42.32 I was their first WWOOFER and they tell... 00:33:42.38\00:33:44.19 and to this day... four years later, 00:33:44.22\00:33:45.95 I still house-sit for them... 00:33:45.99\00:33:47.32 I go over to their house all the time when I'm on Maui... " 00:33:47.36\00:33:50.13 and they've adopted me as their daughter... 00:33:50.16\00:33:52.43 they tell everyone else I was their first WWOOFER 00:33:52.46\00:33:54.26 and so, it was meant to be... 00:33:54.30\00:33:55.63 God opened that door, that wasn't by chance. 00:33:55.66\00:33:57.00 John: Hmmm... 00:33:57.03\00:33:58.40 Rosemary: Hmmm... and so... what did... 00:33:58.43\00:33:59.83 so you were only with them for a month? 00:33:59.87\00:34:01.20 Kathlyn: Okay, yeah... and I have to add something, 00:34:01.24\00:34:02.60 I wrote them and told them about the Sabbath 00:34:02.64\00:34:04.34 and they were okay with it. 00:34:04.37\00:34:05.71 So, I said, "I'll do... I'll garden... whatever... 00:34:05.74\00:34:07.84 but on... on Saturday, I want to go to church 00:34:07.88\00:34:09.61 and I want the Sabbath off... " 00:34:09.64\00:34:10.98 and I remember thinking, like, 00:34:11.01\00:34:12.48 "I wonder if they even know what that is?" 00:34:12.51\00:34:13.92 I go to their house 00:34:13.95\00:34:15.28 and they tell me that they used to live on Molokai... 00:34:15.32\00:34:17.62 Molokai is a smaller island off of Maui 00:34:17.65\00:34:20.19 and they're like, "Yeah, so when we lived on Molokai, 00:34:20.22\00:34:22.42 we had to do all of our shopping before Saturday 00:34:22.46\00:34:25.93 or after Saturday because all of the shops closed 00:34:25.96\00:34:28.60 because they were all Seventh-day-Adventist owned. 00:34:28.63\00:34:30.63 John: Is that right? Rosemary: Smiling. 00:34:30.67\00:34:32.20 Kathlyn: I said, "That is too funny... " 00:34:32.23\00:34:33.74 like, I said, "So, guys don't think that I was... " 00:34:33.77\00:34:36.40 like, I didn't want them to think I was like, 00:34:36.44\00:34:37.77 "I need Tuesday and Saturday off because I... " 00:34:37.81\00:34:39.74 you know, I didn't want them to think I was making stuff up 00:34:39.77\00:34:41.61 but they were like, "Yeah, no... closed on Saturday... " so... 00:34:41.64\00:34:43.81 so, if you ever go to Molokai... 00:34:43.85\00:34:45.85 Rosemary: Yeah and so, you were only there for a month 00:34:45.88\00:34:48.75 but you really enjoyed it and you... 00:34:48.78\00:34:50.49 you learned how to grow things? 00:34:50.52\00:34:52.99 Kathlyn: Well, what I learned from Sharon and Gordie 00:34:53.02\00:34:55.19 was the beauty of growing your own food. 00:34:55.22\00:34:57.99 This couple they... they grew their own food 00:34:58.03\00:35:00.76 their whole lives... their kids never went to the... 00:35:00.80\00:35:02.70 like, doctor really... 00:35:02.76\00:35:04.10 they just kind of healed their kids through nutrition 00:35:04.13\00:35:07.30 and they grew corn... they grew coconuts, like I said, 00:35:07.34\00:35:10.47 kale, ginger, turmeric, papaya... 00:35:10.51\00:35:12.87 they had... oh, and they sold the papayas 00:35:12.91\00:35:14.84 to the health food stores in Maui, 00:35:14.88\00:35:16.31 so, they were like, legit. 00:35:16.34\00:35:17.68 I was there for a month 00:35:17.71\00:35:19.05 because that was the agreement on their WWOOFER website, 00:35:19.08\00:35:20.42 they said, "We're only looking for someone for a month. " 00:35:20.45\00:35:21.92 I WWOOFed for a month then I left 00:35:21.95\00:35:24.39 and then, about a week after that, 00:35:24.42\00:35:26.76 they said, "Come back... " so I came back 00:35:26.79\00:35:28.12 but then I was working at Mama's Fish House Restaurant 00:35:28.16\00:35:30.16 at that point, 00:35:30.23\00:35:31.56 which was my other dream come true. 00:35:31.59\00:35:32.93 Rosemary: How did you get that job? 00:35:32.96\00:35:34.53 Kathlyn: Okay, so when I knew I wanted to move to Maui, 00:35:34.56\00:35:36.97 I called my dad and he was in Thailand 00:35:37.00\00:35:39.00 and I said, "Dad, I want to move to Maui, 00:35:39.03\00:35:40.97 do you have any friends over there that know of jobs... 00:35:41.00\00:35:43.54 like, do you know anything?" 00:35:43.57\00:35:45.44 And he said, "Well, if I hear of anything, I'll let you know. " 00:35:45.47\00:35:47.98 Next thing I knew, he e-mails me and says, 00:35:48.01\00:35:49.98 "Kat, call me... a businessman from Maui came to the hospital 00:35:50.05\00:35:53.75 Mission Hospital in Bangkok trying to sell us something, 00:35:53.78\00:35:56.99 and he says he knows where you need to work 00:35:57.02\00:35:59.39 when you go to Maui... " 00:35:59.45\00:36:00.79 and so, I called my dad, 00:36:00.82\00:36:02.16 my dad said, "Yeah, this man Bill Riker... " 00:36:02.19\00:36:04.09 I don't know if he's ever going to watch this 00:36:04.13\00:36:05.56 but Bill Riker is kind of the reason why I ended up there, 00:36:05.59\00:36:07.66 said that this man said, 00:36:07.70\00:36:09.16 "If your daughter is going to go to Maui, 00:36:09.20\00:36:11.17 and work in hospitality... " 00:36:11.20\00:36:13.00 because that's what I said I wanted to do 00:36:13.03\00:36:14.37 because Hospitality is huge there 00:36:14.40\00:36:15.74 and that's like, the only thing you can do there, really, 00:36:15.77\00:36:17.11 unless you have... you know... 00:36:17.14\00:36:18.47 so, he said, "There's only one restaurant she should work at, 00:36:18.51\00:36:21.78 and it's Mama's Fish House Restaurant" 00:36:21.81\00:36:23.71 and I said, "Okay... " 00:36:23.75\00:36:25.81 and so I... I looked it up 00:36:25.85\00:36:27.65 and it's a restaurant right on the beach 00:36:27.68\00:36:30.15 300 employees... a 1,000 guests come through daily. 00:36:30.19\00:36:32.65 Rosemary: A 1,000 guests a day! 00:36:32.72\00:36:35.12 Kathlyn: Yeah... and... Rosemary: Amazing. 00:36:35.16\00:36:37.09 Kathlyn: A family called Floyd and Doris Christenson started it 00:36:37.13\00:36:39.66 lovely family... 00:36:39.69\00:36:41.03 I met some of the best friends I have to this day 00:36:41.06\00:36:43.90 at that restaurant... 00:36:43.93\00:36:45.27 I worked in the office so, I worked in the office, 00:36:45.30\00:36:47.30 and I also worked as a hostess 00:36:47.34\00:36:48.77 and it's a very busy... 00:36:48.80\00:36:50.14 it's the number one restaurant on Maui 00:36:50.17\00:36:51.51 and anyway, so that door opened and so I did that. 00:36:51.54\00:36:54.58 Rosemary: That's exciting. 00:36:54.61\00:36:56.75 Kathlyn: Yeah, it was really exciting. 00:36:56.78\00:36:58.11 Rosemary: Is that when you gave up eating fish? 00:36:58.15\00:36:59.81 Kathlyn: That's when I gave up eating fish, yeah, 00:36:59.85\00:37:01.62 when I said I went totally plant based, 00:37:01.65\00:37:03.55 I guess I was eating fish a bit and eggs 00:37:03.59\00:37:05.42 and even now, I'm not a 100% vegan 00:37:05.45\00:37:07.46 because I do eat the eggs, it's the Filipino in me, 00:37:07.49\00:37:10.73 but... but I did stop eating fish at Mama's Fish House 00:37:10.76\00:37:13.93 because the stench... and I just... 00:37:14.00\00:37:15.60 the mercury in the fish and... I don't know. 00:37:15.63\00:37:17.83 Rosemary: Yeah, that's right. Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:37:17.87\00:37:20.00 Rosemary: A lot of people don't think about it 00:37:20.04\00:37:22.17 but fish actually are said to be full of toxin. 00:37:22.20\00:37:24.47 John: After listening to you, you walked your way through life 00:37:24.51\00:37:26.54 and you've experienced all these things 00:37:26.57\00:37:28.28 and I'm sure someone's out there, 00:37:28.31\00:37:29.64 maybe somewhere on the road where you've been through 00:37:29.68\00:37:32.11 you know, but the end result is 00:37:32.18\00:37:34.65 you've changed your life... 00:37:34.68\00:37:36.35 you're... you're... you're acknowledging... 00:37:36.38\00:37:39.15 in the Bible there's a commandment... 00:37:39.19\00:37:41.29 the fifth commandment, it says, 00:37:41.32\00:37:42.66 "Honor thy father and thy mother: 00:37:42.69\00:37:44.03 that thy days may be long upon the land 00:37:44.06\00:37:45.69 which the LORD thy God giveth thee... " 00:37:45.73\00:37:47.26 that's with a promise... 00:37:47.30\00:37:48.63 so, you can live longer because you're healthier. 00:37:48.66\00:37:50.30 Kathlyn: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:37:50.33\00:37:51.67 John: You know, God wants that for you 00:37:51.70\00:37:53.40 if you listen to your mom and dad 00:37:53.44\00:37:54.77 yeah, you've gone through experiencing it, 00:37:54.80\00:37:57.57 now, looking back, 00:37:57.61\00:37:58.94 do you think you would have done things differently now? 00:37:58.97\00:38:00.84 Kathlyn: Oh of course, absolutely, I... there... 00:38:00.88\00:38:03.45 you know, I don't want to look in the rear-view mirror too much 00:38:03.48\00:38:06.75 because then you're not going to look forward 00:38:06.78\00:38:08.12 but, I am one of those people... 00:38:08.15\00:38:10.12 there's a quote I love, it says, 00:38:10.19\00:38:12.09 "You should only look back to see how far you've come. " 00:38:12.12\00:38:14.12 So, I look back to see how far I've come 00:38:14.16\00:38:15.92 but I also want to help people, you know, 00:38:15.96\00:38:18.66 and most recently, I've been in... at... 00:38:18.69\00:38:21.33 kind of... you can call it interning at a Gerson Clinic 00:38:21.36\00:38:23.87 the Gerson Therapy is something that... 00:38:23.90\00:38:25.63 is now my new layer of health that I've reached 00:38:25.67\00:38:28.04 and it's in Mexico and it's Northern Baja Gerson Center 00:38:28.07\00:38:31.71 and when I was at that clinic 00:38:31.74\00:38:33.94 I kind of reached a new level of health 00:38:33.98\00:38:36.24 because I was in taking 13 juices a day, 00:38:36.28\00:38:38.45 and there's just so many other different health protocols 00:38:38.48\00:38:42.05 that I learned there and the... the... 00:38:42.08\00:38:45.09 there was an interview that I heard 00:38:45.12\00:38:48.06 with the man who started the clinic, Dr. Vickers, 00:38:48.09\00:38:51.26 and also, one of the patients who healed his cancer 00:38:51.29\00:38:54.40 by doing the therapy for a year, 00:38:54.43\00:38:55.76 and he said, "A healthy man has many ambitions... 00:38:55.80\00:38:59.47 a sick man has only one and that's to get healthy. " 00:38:59.50\00:39:03.27 Rosemary: That's right. 00:39:03.30\00:39:04.64 John: It's a very profound thing isn't it? Profound thought... 00:39:04.67\00:39:06.51 Kathlyn: It is. 00:39:06.54\00:39:07.88 John: And it's true because when you... 00:39:07.91\00:39:09.24 when you're suffering from an illness, 00:39:09.28\00:39:10.61 what do you think about continuously? 00:39:10.65\00:39:13.31 "I wish this wasn't happening to me... 00:39:13.35\00:39:15.92 I wish I could do something about it. " 00:39:15.95\00:39:18.49 Rosemary: Well, a lot of the time what you think about is, 00:39:18.52\00:39:20.52 how sick you feel. John: Yeah, that's right. 00:39:20.56\00:39:22.06 Kathlyn: Hmmm... hmmm... and so, when I heard that quote, 00:39:22.12\00:39:24.03 it was almost like... I was like, "Oh, now I... " 00:39:24.06\00:39:25.93 like, just because sometimes, you know, 00:39:25.96\00:39:28.40 I felt I have to explain to people, like what I'm doing... 00:39:28.43\00:39:31.10 like, "Wait, you're going to be a WWOOFER on Maui?" 00:39:31.13\00:39:33.60 "You're going to some Gerson Clinic in Mexico?" 00:39:33.64\00:39:36.07 like, "What are you doing with your life?" 00:39:36.10\00:39:37.44 What people don't understand is when you're not well, 00:39:37.47\00:39:39.34 all you want is to be well 00:39:39.37\00:39:41.48 and I want to have kids someday, 00:39:41.51\00:39:43.35 I want to have babies... I want to get married... 00:39:43.38\00:39:45.81 I have to be well before that happens, you know, 00:39:45.85\00:39:48.25 and I started reading "Country Living" By Ellen White 00:39:48.28\00:39:51.29 and I started reading, "Diseases and Its Causes" 00:39:51.32\00:39:53.59 and those two books really changed my life 00:39:53.62\00:39:55.59 and I encourage everyone to read: Diseases and Its Causes 00:39:55.62\00:39:58.39 and Country Living 00:39:58.43\00:39:59.76 and if you don't like Ellen White, read it 00:39:59.79\00:40:01.13 because I didn't like Ellen White for most of my life, 00:40:01.16\00:40:02.83 I didn't... 00:40:02.86\00:40:04.20 John: She was an author... wrote many, many books, 00:40:04.23\00:40:08.54 and the knowledge that she recorded in her books 00:40:08.57\00:40:12.97 really are now being proven by Science. 00:40:13.01\00:40:15.31 So, you know, the evidence is there... 00:40:15.34\00:40:17.55 we only need to open our eyes and have a look... 00:40:17.58\00:40:20.12 you know, I thought of this thought, 00:40:20.15\00:40:22.22 you said, I heard this saying once, 00:40:22.25\00:40:24.29 "You are what you eat, don't eat dead meat... " 00:40:24.32\00:40:27.02 you get it? 00:40:27.06\00:40:28.39 Kathlyn: I like that. 00:40:28.42\00:40:29.76 Rosemary: That was on a T-Shirt from the Vegan Society 00:40:29.79\00:40:32.03 in the USA and Dr. Winston Craig was wearing it 00:40:32.06\00:40:36.13 when he had his 50th birthday quite a number of years ago, 00:40:36.16\00:40:38.90 and I just loved that T-Shirt... 00:40:38.93\00:40:41.84 it just spoke amazing words, 00:40:41.90\00:40:44.74 "You are what you eat... don't eat dead meat. " 00:40:44.77\00:40:48.61 Kathlyn: Yeah, eat raw living foods 00:40:48.64\00:40:50.55 and I'm not a 100% raw foodist 00:40:50.58\00:40:52.15 like, there are a couple of those on YouTube, 00:40:52.18\00:40:53.92 I've seen their stuff, that's kind of hard for me, 00:40:53.95\00:40:56.22 like, I want to eat Quinoa sometimes or baked potato 00:40:56.25\00:40:58.45 I don't have a problem with cooked food 00:40:58.49\00:41:00.26 but I do think that you can eat a lot of raw fresh foods 00:41:00.29\00:41:03.59 and that's kind of, you know... 00:41:03.63\00:41:05.09 I turned 30 two years ago, I'm 32 now, 00:41:05.13\00:41:07.46 people think I'm 19 and I just say, "Thank you" 00:41:07.50\00:41:10.07 but when I turned 30... a woman asked me if I was 16 00:41:10.13\00:41:14.97 and I'm telling you, like, 00:41:15.00\00:41:16.57 people are looking for this, like, fountain of youth 00:41:16.60\00:41:19.41 it starts with what you put in your body. 00:41:19.44\00:41:21.58 John: Yeah. Rosemary: Hmmm... 00:41:23.21\00:41:24.71 and what you put in your body, 00:41:24.75\00:41:26.68 affects what you put in your mind. 00:41:26.72\00:41:28.72 Kathleen: Absolutely. 00:41:28.75\00:41:30.09 Rosemary: It affects your mind in a very dramatic way 00:41:30.12\00:41:33.15 and that's something we've been finding out 00:41:33.22\00:41:34.86 even on this Program, 00:41:34.89\00:41:36.22 we've interviewed people like Chad and Fadia Kreuzer 00:41:36.26\00:41:39.56 and Dr. Carly Enjuku 00:41:39.59\00:41:42.43 and people who have learned a lot... 00:41:42.46\00:41:45.40 Eddie Ramirez... Dr. Eddie Ramirez from Wiemer 00:41:45.43\00:41:48.17 and they're finding more and more 00:41:48.20\00:41:51.57 that your gut has to be healthy 00:41:51.61\00:41:54.91 for your brain to function properly. 00:41:54.94\00:41:56.91 Kathlyn: Absolutely, yeah. 00:41:56.95\00:41:58.28 Rosemary: And if your gut's not healthy, 00:41:58.31\00:41:59.65 your brain is only going to... 00:41:59.68\00:42:01.25 it's... it's not going to work properly... 00:42:01.28\00:42:03.08 it's going to affect you badly. 00:42:03.12\00:42:04.49 John: Even more and more Science is revealing the gut 00:42:04.55\00:42:05.92 and brain connection, 00:42:05.95\00:42:07.29 there is definitely a connection between it 00:42:07.32\00:42:08.69 and I know from my own experience, 00:42:08.72\00:42:10.83 I grew up eating lots of flesh-food products as a kid, 00:42:10.86\00:42:15.66 I've changed that now and, you know, it's... 00:42:15.70\00:42:18.63 it's really encouraging to know that if you eat well... 00:42:18.67\00:42:22.34 you drink water 00:42:22.37\00:42:23.71 and you keep all those things that are pure and good for you, 00:42:23.74\00:42:27.88 foremost... your health really improves. 00:42:27.94\00:42:30.88 Kathlyn: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:42:30.91\00:42:32.25 John: And the lifestyle... 00:42:32.28\00:42:33.62 most of the diseases now are lifestyle... 00:42:33.65\00:42:34.98 it's what we eat that causes the problems 00:42:35.02\00:42:36.55 and we don't exercise... we don't do those sorts of things 00:42:36.58\00:42:39.75 that's what's causing the issues now in this... you know, 00:42:39.79\00:42:42.62 in this... in this century now that we live in. 00:42:42.66\00:42:44.39 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:42:44.43\00:42:45.76 John: It's lifestyle-related diseases and... 00:42:45.79\00:42:48.36 and I see the importance of it 00:42:48.43\00:42:50.43 you know, and I like the idea that you want to share 00:42:50.47\00:42:52.57 what you've learned 00:42:52.60\00:42:54.30 because young people need to know that, you know, 00:42:54.34\00:42:56.50 chocolate... oh, it tastes nice and it's very addictive 00:42:56.54\00:42:59.44 but you know it's not good for you. 00:42:59.47\00:43:00.81 Rosemary: I was a chocoholic. I was a sugar addict... 00:44:41.44\00:44:44.28 no, really... I... skittles and snickers and like, 00:44:44.31\00:44:47.12 I realize... my acne was probably all sugar related 00:44:47.15\00:44:49.92 and I had to find alternative desserts 00:44:49.95\00:44:53.62 and just ask my family... 00:44:53.66\00:44:55.22 I was just at the Gerson Clinic I told you in Mexico 00:44:55.26\00:44:58.13 and it was my boyfriend's birthday 00:44:58.19\00:44:59.96 and we made... I helped the Chef make 00:45:00.00\00:45:01.73 a carrot cake made with carrots 00:45:01.76\00:45:04.40 and apple sauce... and it was vegan. 00:45:04.43\00:45:06.77 John: It's delicious. 00:45:06.80\00:45:08.14 Kathlyn: It was delicious and it was so healthy 00:45:08.17\00:45:09.50 and just put a little bit of maple syrup... 00:45:09.54\00:45:10.87 I put a little bit extra because you know... 00:45:10.91\00:45:12.24 but you know, like, and I make an avocado chocolate mousse, 00:45:12.27\00:45:15.98 have you tried it yet? 00:45:16.01\00:45:17.35 Rosemary: No... John: No... 00:45:17.38\00:45:18.71 Kathlyn: I might have to make it for you while I'm here. 00:45:18.75\00:45:20.08 Rosemary: Chocolate mousse? Kathlyn: It's avocado... 00:45:20.12\00:45:21.45 and I use carob. Rosemary: Yes, so do I. 00:45:21.48\00:45:22.92 Kathlyn: Carob or Cacao... 00:45:22.95\00:45:24.29 but you know, honestly, the caffeine in cacao 00:45:24.32\00:45:25.65 makes me kind of ooo at night, like, I can't sleep. 00:45:25.69\00:45:27.02 John: Sign difference. 00:45:27.06\00:45:29.12 Rosemary: It's the same thing like taking the chocolate. 00:45:29.16\00:45:31.26 Kathlyn: Oh it is? Rosemary: Hmmm... 00:45:31.29\00:45:32.66 Kathlyn: Well, yeah, I just learned something, okay, yeah, 00:45:32.69\00:45:34.06 so, carob... I do carob... 00:45:34.10\00:45:35.46 and then you get the avocado, maple syrup 00:45:35.50\00:45:37.20 and you put a little bit of coconut... 00:45:37.23\00:45:38.90 you know, even though I learned, 00:45:38.93\00:45:40.27 I was eating a lot of coconut butter and coconut oil, 00:45:40.30\00:45:42.30 and at the Gerson Clinic, I realized... 00:45:42.34\00:45:44.31 I found out that coconut... 00:45:44.34\00:45:45.77 too much coconut oil isn't actually very good for you. 00:45:45.81\00:45:47.81 John: That's what I was saying earlier, it's a balance. 00:45:47.84\00:45:49.84 You can have too much... even if good 00:45:49.88\00:45:52.01 as well as bad... 00:45:52.05\00:45:53.58 so, it's really knowing what is best for you 00:45:53.62\00:45:57.22 and staying with that 00:45:57.25\00:45:58.59 and it's not extremes... 00:45:58.62\00:45:59.95 it's just being moderate in all things. 00:45:59.99\00:46:01.82 Rosemary: Yeah, well, actually it's 00:46:01.86\00:46:04.03 moderation in that which is good 00:46:04.06\00:46:06.16 and abstinence in those things that are not good. 00:46:06.19\00:46:09.06 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:46:09.10\00:46:10.43 Rosemary: So, even those things that are good, 00:46:10.47\00:46:11.90 don't overindulge and don't get so hooked on one aspect 00:46:11.93\00:46:18.54 that you become really obsessive about it 00:46:18.57\00:46:23.55 and it takes over your life and becomes your god. 00:46:23.58\00:46:25.35 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:46:25.38\00:46:26.72 Rosemary: You have to balance everything 00:46:26.75\00:46:28.38 and do everything in moderation. 00:46:28.45\00:46:30.55 John: Hmmm... 00:46:30.59\00:46:31.92 Kathlyn: Isn't there a verse, 00:46:31.95\00:46:33.29 "Let your moderation be known unto all men... 00:46:33.32\00:46:34.66 the Lord is at hand. " Is it Philippians 4: 7 or 8? 00:46:34.69\00:46:36.99 Yeah, "Let your moderation be known to all men... " 00:46:37.03\00:46:39.59 Rosemary: Not 7 or 8 though, not Philippians 4:6, 7 and 8, 00:46:39.63\00:46:42.93 I know they're in but they're not the ones 00:46:42.96\00:46:44.43 but there is a verse that says that. 00:46:44.47\00:46:45.83 Kathlyn: Okay, okay and so I love that verse 00:46:45.87\00:46:48.80 because I think that we live in a very gluttonous society 00:46:48.84\00:46:51.54 and it's, you know, people are overeating 00:46:51.57\00:46:55.14 like, themselves to death 00:46:55.18\00:46:56.61 and so, it's very important that and you know, the whole, 00:46:56.64\00:46:59.25 not eating in between meals... 00:46:59.28\00:47:00.62 that's something I've really tried to incorporate 00:47:00.65\00:47:02.32 into my life... and that's hard because... 00:47:02.35\00:47:04.92 hmmm... should I eat now? 00:47:04.95\00:47:07.56 Because if I eat now, then can I eat lunch in two hours? 00:47:07.59\00:47:10.43 because I want four hours of... you know... 00:47:10.46\00:47:12.03 so, that's something I still struggle with 00:47:12.06\00:47:13.63 because the eating in between meals, you know, 00:47:13.66\00:47:15.23 but I don't want to so... 00:47:15.26\00:47:16.60 Rosemary: I... I actually haven't found it that hard. 00:47:16.63\00:47:19.80 Kathlyn: Okay, yeah, I think it's because 00:47:19.83\00:47:22.10 when I was working in the restaurant industry, 00:47:22.14\00:47:23.84 it was very hard to find a regular... 00:47:23.87\00:47:25.64 John: Hmmm... 00:47:25.67\00:47:27.21 Rosemary: Your dad told me one time when he rang, 00:47:27.24\00:47:29.71 he's rung a few times and we've rung him a couple of times 00:47:29.74\00:47:34.28 and he was saying that when you were working at the restaurant 00:47:34.32\00:47:38.82 in Hawaii 00:47:38.85\00:47:40.62 that he was really proud of you for telling them 00:47:40.66\00:47:45.06 that you wanted the Sabbath off. 00:47:45.09\00:47:47.23 Kathlyn: Oh wow, I never knew that he felt that. 00:47:47.26\00:47:49.30 Rosemary: That's what you did isn't it? 00:47:49.33\00:47:50.67 Kathlyn: Yeah, I did, I told the restaurant... 00:47:50.70\00:47:52.30 because if I was going to tell the WWOOFing people 00:47:52.33\00:47:54.10 then, I'd have to tell the restaurant 00:47:54.14\00:47:55.47 and I said, "I want to... " 00:47:55.50\00:47:57.04 Rosemary: And that's really hard to do in a restaurant... 00:47:57.07\00:47:58.57 to tell them. 00:47:58.61\00:47:59.94 Kathlyn: Yeah, and it's really hard to do 00:47:59.97\00:48:01.64 when you are alone and you don't have... 00:48:01.68\00:48:03.28 like, your Principal... like, I grew up in Adventist schools... 00:48:03.31\00:48:05.48 Adventist bubble... 00:48:05.51\00:48:06.85 my dad always made that decision for me 00:48:06.88\00:48:08.22 or the schools always made that decision for me, all of a sudden 00:48:08.25\00:48:09.88 John: Now you have to do it yourself. 00:48:09.92\00:48:11.25 Kathlyn: I had to do it for myself 00:48:11.29\00:48:12.62 and people were like, 00:48:12.65\00:48:14.16 "Okay, so you're like some kind of Cinderella... 00:48:14.19\00:48:15.92 like, as soon as the sun goes down... like, you can't work... 00:48:15.96\00:48:18.63 but then you come back on Sunday like, all refreshed, 00:48:18.66\00:48:20.96 like, what's going on?" 00:48:21.00\00:48:22.33 And... so a lot of my friends didn't understand it at first 00:48:22.36\00:48:25.90 but you know, it was very important for me 00:48:25.93\00:48:28.40 and it still... the Sabbath is still very important for me 00:48:28.44\00:48:30.51 and to tell you the truth, 00:48:30.54\00:48:31.87 I still find myself struggling with, 00:48:31.91\00:48:35.68 "Okay, can I do this on the Sabbath... can I do that?" 00:48:35.71\00:48:37.35 But I have tried my best to follow from what I've learned 00:48:37.38\00:48:41.28 how to keep the Sabbath, you know. 00:48:41.32\00:48:42.65 John: I like that in the NEWSTART Program, 00:48:42.68\00:48:44.65 the eight laws of health, there's: Trust in God 00:48:44.69\00:48:47.59 there's a spiritual side to our well-being also 00:48:47.62\00:48:50.53 and, you know, when we understand that, 00:48:50.56\00:48:52.79 we can call upon God if there are problems 00:48:52.83\00:48:55.26 and He can do extraordinary things, 00:48:55.30\00:48:57.40 he's a miracle-working God and He can heal people. 00:48:57.43\00:48:59.90 Rosemary: And He can help us get the Sabbath off... 00:48:59.93\00:49:02.40 Kathlyn: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:49:02.44\00:49:03.77 John: But it's interesting because 00:49:03.81\00:49:05.67 having the Sabbath off is also a day of rest... 00:49:05.71\00:49:08.11 it's called, "A day of rest... " 00:49:08.14\00:49:09.74 and that's where we don't do the normal work that we do 00:49:09.81\00:49:13.45 in the other six days of the week, 00:49:13.48\00:49:15.68 so, we set aside to worship God... 00:49:15.72\00:49:17.85 that's the primary purpose to acknowledge Him 00:49:17.92\00:49:20.16 as our Creator and our God, 00:49:20.19\00:49:21.62 but at the same time, we receive a benefit from it, 00:49:21.66\00:49:25.06 we also receive the blessing of God from it 00:49:25.09\00:49:27.70 which I want above everything else. 00:49:27.73\00:49:29.10 Kathlyn: Yeah. 00:49:29.13\00:49:30.47 Rosemary: You know, I used to really enjoy our Sabbaths 00:49:30.50\00:49:32.03 in Bangkok 00:49:32.07\00:49:33.80 because we would have Sabbath School and church 00:49:33.84\00:49:36.60 and there was the choir 00:49:36.64\00:49:37.97 and sometimes I had to lead the choir 00:49:38.01\00:49:40.24 which I found really difficult myself 00:49:40.28\00:49:42.71 but then we would go to your place for lunch 00:49:42.74\00:49:45.45 then after lunch, we would go and sing in the hospital, 00:49:45.48\00:49:50.05 do you remember doing that? 00:49:50.09\00:49:52.05 Kathlyn: Oh yeah, I do... I do, yeah. 00:49:52.09\00:49:53.62 Rosemary: And every Sabbath, 00:49:53.66\00:49:54.99 we would be going to all the Wards 00:49:55.02\00:49:58.06 and singing in the... the hallways. 00:49:58.09\00:49:59.86 John: That was a big hospital too. 00:49:59.89\00:50:01.60 Rosemary: And praying for the patients... praying with them 00:50:01.66\00:50:05.17 and you know, there were two old ladies, 00:50:05.20\00:50:07.67 you may remember them, 00:50:07.70\00:50:09.04 one had been a doctor at one stage 00:50:09.07\00:50:10.91 but they were basically confined to their hospital bed now 00:50:10.94\00:50:15.14 as really old ladies... they were in the same room 00:50:15.18\00:50:19.45 and they always appreciated us going in there, 00:50:19.48\00:50:23.25 the one who had been the doctor was starting to lose her mind 00:50:23.28\00:50:26.29 but the other dear old lady used to love to see us 00:50:26.32\00:50:28.66 and we would pray with them... 00:50:28.69\00:50:30.53 they were Buddhists but they appreciated our prayers 00:50:30.56\00:50:33.19 and do you know, when we left Bangkok 00:50:33.23\00:50:36.40 and we went back... 00:50:36.43\00:50:38.30 in 2003... we left at the end of 2001... 00:50:38.33\00:50:44.57 we went back in 2003... and that old lady was still there 00:50:44.61\00:50:49.71 and on Sabbath, we joined the group 00:50:49.74\00:50:51.95 and we went and prayed... we sang in the passage ways... 00:50:51.98\00:50:55.85 the same Thai songs and English songs that we used to sing 00:50:55.88\00:50:59.72 and we... it was just a beautiful way to spend Sabbath, 00:50:59.75\00:51:03.12 it's a perfect way to spend Sabbath 00:51:03.16\00:51:05.19 and when we went into that room, 00:51:05.23\00:51:08.40 she lit up and she started speaking 00:51:08.46\00:51:11.57 and the Thais there said, "She recognizes you 00:51:11.60\00:51:15.27 and she's so excited to see you again... " 00:51:15.30\00:51:18.54 this is couple of... nearly two years later... 00:51:18.57\00:51:22.98 and she recognized us as having been going around 00:51:23.01\00:51:27.38 and singing all those Sabbaths when we were in Bangkok 00:51:27.42\00:51:31.22 and she was so happy. 00:51:31.25\00:51:32.59 Kathlyn: That's so special... 00:51:32.62\00:51:34.26 Rosemary: It was very special... 00:51:34.29\00:51:35.99 I didn't... I didn't think she'd ever recognize us. 00:51:36.02\00:51:38.23 Kathlyn: Wow, yeah, yeah, you know, 00:51:38.29\00:51:40.63 there's a lot of great things to do on the Sabbath, 00:51:40.66\00:51:42.33 like, you mentioned, singing... 00:51:42.36\00:51:44.70 and one thing I did when I was on Maui 00:51:44.73\00:51:47.47 because I sometimes didn't have a lot of people 00:51:47.50\00:51:49.20 to keep the Sabbath with, 00:51:49.24\00:51:50.64 I would just go on hikes 00:51:50.67\00:51:52.01 and I started to really appreciate my alone time 00:51:52.04\00:51:54.58 at this stage in my life and I just memorized Scripture 00:51:54.61\00:51:57.01 which I know... I got the Scripture wrong earlier, so... 00:51:57.05\00:51:59.41 I would say, I have some more work to do 00:51:59.45\00:52:01.52 in memorizing my Scripture 00:52:01.55\00:52:02.95 but I loved to memorize Scripture 00:52:02.98\00:52:04.32 and even some Ellen White quotes and just quotes 00:52:04.35\00:52:06.22 and go for a walk so... and like you said, you know, 00:52:06.25\00:52:08.32 singing for people who aren't well and 00:52:08.36\00:52:11.36 yeah, like you said, it's a day of rest 00:52:11.39\00:52:14.36 and it's... 00:52:14.40\00:52:15.73 Rosemary: It's a day to make other people happy. 00:52:15.76\00:52:17.10 Kathlyn: Yeah... yeah... 00:52:17.17\00:52:18.50 Rosemary: To worship God and to let people know 00:52:18.53\00:52:21.20 that God cares for them by showing them that care. 00:52:21.27\00:52:23.97 Kathlyn: Yeah, yeah... absolutely. 00:52:24.01\00:52:25.34 Rosemary: We like to visit people on Sabbath, don't we? 00:52:25.37\00:52:27.84 John: Yup... 00:52:27.88\00:52:29.21 Rosemary: But right now, it's time that we have to give 00:52:29.24\00:52:32.71 you our contact details. 00:52:32.75\00:52:34.12 I hope you're enjoying our talk with Kathlyn Wolpin, 00:52:34.15\00:52:36.99 I'm enjoying it 00:52:37.02\00:52:38.95 and if you want to contact us 00:52:38.99\00:52:41.99 whether it's about this interview... 00:52:42.02\00:52:43.89 things that we've spoken about... 00:52:43.93\00:52:45.96 or you just want to contact us anyway 00:52:45.99\00:52:48.83 and maybe donate to help us keep on going 00:52:48.86\00:52:51.60 then, these are the details where you can contact us. 00:52:51.63\00:52:54.87 Music... 00:52:54.90\00:52:59.51 If you would like to contact 3ABN Australia, 00:52:59.54\00:53:01.74 you may do so in the following ways: 00:53:01.78\00:53:03.48 you may write to: 3ABN Australia PO Box 752 00:53:03.51\00:53:08.12 Morisset NSW 2264 Australia 00:53:08.15\00:53:12.05 that's: PO Box 752 Morisset NSW 2264, Australia 00:53:12.09\00:53:18.96 or you may call: 02-4973-3456 00:53:18.99\00:53:23.93 that's: 02-4973-3456 00:53:23.97\00:53:27.94 from 8:30 a. m. to 5 p. m.
