This is 3ABN Now 00:00:15.88\00:00:17.45 with John and Rosemary Malkiewycz. 00:00:17.65\00:00:19.18 Hello and welcome to 3ABN Now. 00:00:21.18\00:00:23.32 So good to have you watch these programs each week. 00:00:23.82\00:00:26.79 And if you're watching the first time, whether you're on VAST 00:00:26.99\00:00:28.92 or some other network or on your Internet 00:00:29.12\00:00:32.29 or your mobile phone we want to welcome you especially. 00:00:32.49\00:00:35.90 Today we are very privileged 00:00:36.30\00:00:37.73 to have someone from a part of the world that we've never 00:00:37.93\00:00:41.34 interviewed anyone before 00:00:41.54\00:00:43.34 and his name is George Kwong. 00:00:43.54\00:00:45.61 George: it's a real pleasure to have you here on the program 00:00:46.01\00:00:49.14 because... Where do you come from? 00:00:49.34\00:00:51.01 Thank you, John. I'm so happy to be here. 00:00:51.41\00:00:53.18 I come from Fiji... the island of Fiji. 00:00:53.38\00:00:55.48 It's in the South Pacific 00:00:56.38\00:00:58.09 and it's about four hours' flight from Sydney. Yes. 00:00:58.49\00:01:03.29 So you were here for a health convention, 00:01:03.93\00:01:08.50 is that right? I came down to attend the... 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.23 the Lifestyle Medicine Summit 00:01:12.40\00:01:15.07 that was run by the South Pacific Division. 00:01:15.84\00:01:18.74 And I was happy to be a resource personnel in that Summit. 00:01:18.94\00:01:22.91 So let us... Before we get into the program, 00:01:24.31\00:01:27.52 George, there's a text that you have chosen 00:01:27.68\00:01:30.52 with us... to share with us and that is Isaiah 58:12. 00:01:30.72\00:01:35.32 And Rosemary, would you read that? I certainly will. 00:01:35.52\00:01:37.86 Isaiah 58:12 says: 00:01:38.93\00:01:41.93 "And they that shall be of thee 00:01:42.13\00:01:44.93 shall build the old waste places. 00:01:45.13\00:01:47.37 Thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations 00:01:47.67\00:01:52.07 and thou shalt be called the repairer of the breach, 00:01:52.27\00:01:56.01 the restorer of paths to dwell in. " 00:01:56.21\00:01:59.75 That's a very optimistic- sounding verse, isn't it? 00:01:59.95\00:02:04.69 I like Isaiah 58. 00:02:05.09\00:02:07.16 Isaiah 58... you know, it's a... 00:02:07.66\00:02:11.93 it's a chapter that's speaking to me. 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.90 Um-hmm. And if you look at the very first verse 00:02:15.10\00:02:18.93 it says: "Cry aloud. " Um-hmm. 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.37 It's like you have an amplifier and it's telling me 00:02:21.57\00:02:24.77 as a SDA that we have this very special message. 00:02:24.97\00:02:29.08 That somewhere along the line we have lost it 00:02:29.28\00:02:32.28 and we are called to be the repairer of the breach. 00:02:32.78\00:02:36.45 That's right! I like that. 00:02:36.65\00:02:38.35 Ones that "restore the paths to dwell in. " 00:02:38.55\00:02:41.82 Exactly. Very good. 00:02:42.32\00:02:43.86 We have this calling and that is my passion. 00:02:44.06\00:02:47.80 That's the verse that drives me, 00:02:48.00\00:02:49.66 that keeps me working and working and working 00:02:49.86\00:02:53.37 because I know I have a special responsibility. 00:02:53.64\00:02:56.17 That's right. For thousands of years the Bible tells us 00:02:56.37\00:02:59.17 the devil has been busy confusing people 00:02:59.37\00:03:02.58 and turning people actually away from God. 00:03:02.78\00:03:05.15 He said he's come to "kill, maim, and to destroy. " 00:03:05.35\00:03:07.85 But the Bible tells us that God has given us Jesus 00:03:08.65\00:03:12.39 to give us life more abundantly. 00:03:12.59\00:03:14.39 More abundantly... yes. So it's a very important thing 00:03:14.59\00:03:17.59 that we are called to do and that is to let you know 00:03:17.79\00:03:20.73 that there is a God in heaven who really wants to do 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.67 all He can for you to enjoy this life 00:03:23.87\00:03:27.80 and the life that is after this life. Amen! Amen. 00:03:28.00\00:03:31.21 And so that's the purpose of our existence is to help others 00:03:31.41\00:03:34.18 to know. Is that right, George? That is why we are here for. 00:03:34.38\00:03:37.55 That's right. We are here to continue the work that Jesus 00:03:37.75\00:03:40.85 Himself came to do. That's right! 00:03:41.05\00:03:42.75 Jesus helped the sick. Jesus helped the sick. 00:03:42.95\00:03:45.72 He healed. You know what amazes me? 00:03:45.92\00:03:49.09 You know what amazes me, George? 00:03:49.29\00:03:50.76 Jesus would go through a village 00:03:50.96\00:03:53.43 and when He had left there was not one sick person 00:03:53.63\00:03:58.07 left in that whole village. Everybody was well. 00:03:58.47\00:04:01.44 That's why they followed Him. He healed everyone! 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.51 I just find that amazing when I read that in the Bible. 00:04:03.71\00:04:06.74 It's an amazing... it's an amazing work that He came to do. 00:04:07.81\00:04:11.51 Yeah. So we're going to be talking about that type of thing 00:04:11.71\00:04:15.38 today... about the healing of the sick 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.45 and how that can actually be achieved. 00:04:17.65\00:04:19.75 So if you are someone who is unwell 00:04:19.95\00:04:23.36 maybe today we've got something that can help you. 00:04:23.56\00:04:26.80 Um-hmm. So stay tuned. 00:04:27.00\00:04:28.70 Yeah. So George Kwong. Now that name 00:04:28.90\00:04:31.83 doesn't sound like for me a Fijian name. 00:04:32.03\00:04:34.37 So tell us about your parents and background. 00:04:34.57\00:04:39.54 Well the Kwong, of course, is, 00:04:39.74\00:04:41.94 you know, is a Chinese-origin name. 00:04:42.14\00:04:46.31 My father... my grandfather - sorry - came from China. 00:04:46.98\00:04:51.49 He was one of those that stowed away in those early boats 00:04:53.02\00:04:56.32 out into the islands. 00:04:56.52\00:04:58.26 I think the story was that he ran away from China - 00:04:58.46\00:05:01.36 um-hmm - during the war or something like that happened. 00:05:01.56\00:05:05.57 He came and they got stranded in an island in Fiji 00:05:05.77\00:05:10.21 south of the main island and he set up his new family there. 00:05:11.31\00:05:16.85 Well, there could have been worst places in the world 00:05:17.05\00:05:19.08 to be stranded. He loved it there. He set up 00:05:19.28\00:05:22.98 the first bakery store there. 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.49 OK... so he was the industrious type. 00:05:25.69\00:05:27.86 He was industrious like many Chinese that came to Fiji. 00:05:28.06\00:05:31.16 And he met a local woman 00:05:31.56\00:05:34.26 and there were seven of them in the family, and my father 00:05:34.46\00:05:38.53 was the youngest in the family. OK. 00:05:39.43\00:05:42.64 My father grew up and of course 00:05:43.74\00:05:47.68 he went from the island to the main island. 00:05:47.88\00:05:50.81 And that's where he met my mother. 00:05:51.01\00:05:54.28 On the other side my mother's story is 00:05:54.48\00:05:57.59 my mother's father also went on a boat 00:05:57.79\00:06:01.89 and he went to Samoa... and island in the Pacific. 00:06:02.66\00:06:06.63 Um-hmm. That's where he met his wife. 00:06:06.83\00:06:09.96 And my mother plus another seven were born in Samoa. 00:06:11.13\00:06:17.11 OK. And my grandmother - my maternal grandmother - 00:06:17.31\00:06:21.71 heard about the message of the SDA church. 00:06:22.84\00:06:26.68 Umm! And while she was in Samoa 00:06:26.88\00:06:29.08 she got converted into the SDA church. 00:06:29.28\00:06:32.39 So she accepted what she heard. 00:06:32.59\00:06:35.69 She accepted the message; she accepted what she learned; 00:06:35.89\00:06:38.69 and she converted the whole family including 00:06:38.89\00:06:41.96 my grandfather who had come from Fiji was a staunch Methodist. 00:06:42.16\00:06:46.33 He got converted. He was so excited with the message. 00:06:46.53\00:06:49.07 So they left Samoa and came back to Fiji 00:06:49.27\00:06:54.51 as Seventh-day Adventist missionaries. 00:06:54.71\00:06:56.95 And they went right back to my grandfather's island 00:06:57.81\00:07:01.42 where they set up the first SDA church on that island. 00:07:01.82\00:07:06.72 Is that right? So you're Samoan/Fijian - 00:07:06.92\00:07:09.82 Samoan/Fijian/Chinese - and Chinese-Fijian. 00:07:10.03\00:07:12.83 So that's an interesting mix, isn't it? 00:07:14.06\00:07:17.17 So you know it's interesting to think that your family 00:07:18.20\00:07:22.30 accepted Jesus. What do you think? I know this is going to 00:07:22.50\00:07:25.34 put you on the spot. What do you think it was 00:07:25.54\00:07:27.08 that they got excited about when they heard? 00:07:27.28\00:07:29.04 In the Bible was it that excited them to make 00:07:29.44\00:07:32.28 a commitment? You know, they were always talking about 00:07:32.48\00:07:35.68 how the SDA's in Samoa had a hospital 00:07:35.88\00:07:39.45 that cared about the people in Samoa. 00:07:39.85\00:07:42.92 And I think they were excited about the seventh-day gospel 00:07:43.43\00:07:49.36 of healing and teaching and preaching. 00:07:49.56\00:07:52.40 They were excited about the fact that they had found something 00:07:52.80\00:07:57.44 that they've never never ever heard about before 00:07:57.64\00:08:00.38 in the islands. The London Missionary Society was the 00:08:00.58\00:08:03.31 predominant church in Samoa at that time. 00:08:03.51\00:08:06.15 Um-hmm. And when the SDA faith came in 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.52 they were excited about it... especially about the Sabbath 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.75 also. That was something very special to them. 00:08:12.95\00:08:16.62 Tell us: how many brothers and sisters have you 00:08:16.83\00:08:21.56 in your family? I have two sisters and three brothers. 00:08:21.76\00:08:27.14 Three brothers. So... three of us. 00:08:27.34\00:08:30.41 Three brothers, two sisters so there's 5 of us in the family. 00:08:30.61\00:08:34.44 So did you grow up? You grew up. What school did you 00:08:34.64\00:08:38.55 attend? Tell us a little bit how it was like. I was 00:08:38.75\00:08:41.35 born on the island, and my grandmother was the only 00:08:41.55\00:08:45.85 go-to person there that could deliver babies on the island. 00:08:46.05\00:08:49.62 OK. So they'd been medical missionaries. 00:08:49.82\00:08:53.40 The had an obligation to whoever 00:08:53.60\00:08:58.60 that needed to be attended to. 00:08:58.80\00:09:01.74 Anyway... she delivered me way back more than 60 yrs. ago. 00:09:01.94\00:09:07.38 OK. And we were all brought up in the island. 00:09:07.71\00:09:11.01 A very simple life and we were brought up within the SDA faith. 00:09:11.21\00:09:16.89 Um-hmm. And we had to move to the main island 00:09:17.09\00:09:20.56 to the urban center where there was school and education. 00:09:20.76\00:09:25.26 OK. And I went to Fulton College 00:09:25.46\00:09:30.13 when I was very young. So in fact I left my family 00:09:30.33\00:09:33.84 when I was about five or six years old - 00:09:34.04\00:09:35.90 umm - to go to a church school. 00:09:36.10\00:09:38.71 Is that right? You know, the belief of those days 00:09:38.91\00:09:41.88 that Christian education - especially SDA education - 00:09:42.08\00:09:45.81 was something that all families upheld in those days. 00:09:46.01\00:09:49.75 So they sent me to Fulton College very young. 00:09:49.95\00:09:54.12 So Fulton had a primary school and high school then? 00:09:54.52\00:09:57.73 They had a primary. So did you get to go home 00:09:57.93\00:09:59.59 and visit with your family? During the holidays 00:09:59.79\00:10:01.80 I was always ready to go home. 00:10:02.00\00:10:03.80 And then from Fulton College I went to a boarding school. 00:10:04.00\00:10:06.87 Umm. So I spent a lot of my life away from home. 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.90 And went to the boarding school, a quite prestigious boarding 00:10:10.31\00:10:15.14 school where they trained future leaders of Fiji. 00:10:15.34\00:10:18.81 OK. So I graduated from there then I... What did you 00:10:19.01\00:10:23.22 graduate in, George? I graduated from high school 00:10:23.42\00:10:26.09 and I had a scholarship to go to New Zealand. 00:10:26.29\00:10:29.59 So I came down to New Zealand and studied education. 00:10:29.79\00:10:32.73 OK. So actually I have a 00:10:32.93\00:10:36.90 a school teaching background. 00:10:37.10\00:10:39.23 High? High school? 00:10:39.63\00:10:42.87 Secondary school? Primary school and high school. 00:10:43.07\00:10:45.84 So I often think about you know young people 00:10:47.38\00:10:51.51 leaving their families and going off. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.45 Your mother must have had a good influence upon you 00:10:53.85\00:10:56.62 to keep you doing what was right. 00:10:56.82\00:10:59.39 Did you live all your life doing what was right? 00:10:59.59\00:11:01.66 All those letters kept coming reminding me about 00:11:01.86\00:11:04.39 the Sabbath, reminding me about the church, about the faith. 00:11:04.59\00:11:07.90 But you know, like many many young Adventists 00:11:08.40\00:11:11.33 somewhere along the line you drift off. 00:11:11.53\00:11:14.50 But the faith is still in you. 00:11:14.90\00:11:17.74 You know you still believe this is the true way to go. 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.04 I left the church for a little while and then 00:11:22.14\00:11:25.01 things happen in life that bring you back a better SDA 00:11:25.21\00:11:29.65 and become a better Seventh-day Adventist. 00:11:29.85\00:11:31.82 Yeah, there are some that don't come back. Some don't come back. 00:11:32.02\00:11:33.66 Yeah, yeah. I was quite fortunate that my upbringing 00:11:33.86\00:11:37.09 was strong within the faith. Yes. 00:11:37.29\00:11:40.10 There's a good saying in the Bible that says: "Train up 00:11:40.53\00:11:42.36 a child in the way he should go 00:11:42.56\00:11:44.23 and he will not depart from it when he is old. " 00:11:44.43\00:11:47.10 And that's a very true saying and it's very encouraging one 00:11:47.30\00:11:50.74 for maybe parents who have been praying for their children. 00:11:50.94\00:11:53.27 But God always hears and answers prayer. 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.64 Maybe not in exactly the time you want but 00:11:55.84\00:11:58.25 in the overall plan of things God is in charge 00:11:58.45\00:12:01.35 if we allow Him to be in charge. 00:12:01.55\00:12:03.12 You mentioned that you teach... Did you teach anywhere, George? 00:12:03.95\00:12:07.42 Yeah, I taught in Fiji for... 00:12:07.62\00:12:09.69 I actually did some teacher training and taught for a little 00:12:10.09\00:12:12.46 while in New Zealand and I taught in Fiji 00:12:12.66\00:12:14.53 for about 4 or 5 years. 00:12:14.73\00:12:17.03 Then somebody pulled me out of teaching and I went into... 00:12:17.23\00:12:20.74 into the commercial world. 00:12:20.94\00:12:23.37 From there then I went and worked with the government 00:12:23.57\00:12:27.21 in building up the export industry in Fiji. 00:12:27.41\00:12:30.35 OK. So we were in the export of fruits and vegetables 00:12:30.55\00:12:35.72 and local products into the markets into Sydney 00:12:35.92\00:12:39.49 and into other world markets. So I was quite fortunate 00:12:39.69\00:12:42.99 to have that experience. 00:12:43.19\00:12:44.56 Then we started a family business. 00:12:44.96\00:12:49.30 OK. We actually set up the first 00:12:49.50\00:12:53.44 health food store in Fiji. 00:12:53.64\00:12:55.97 Is that right? Selling health food, so 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.44 my family... my mother's upbringing and my grandmother... 00:12:58.64\00:13:03.18 they brought us up in the church message about 00:13:03.38\00:13:07.85 food and plant-based foods. 00:13:08.05\00:13:09.62 So I had that inside me all the time. 00:13:09.82\00:13:12.05 So I converted that into something 00:13:12.25\00:13:16.02 that we could make a living out of. 00:13:16.22\00:13:18.63 I was wondering how much of a demand 00:13:19.59\00:13:21.56 there would be for plant based? 00:13:21.76\00:13:23.83 At that time? No, wasn't much in Fiji. 00:13:24.03\00:13:26.87 This was way back in the 1990's. 00:13:27.07\00:13:29.70 It was a bit premature at that time. 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.97 But now? Things have changed a lot now. 00:13:32.17\00:13:34.64 Yeah, we are going to be talking a little bit about that, 00:13:34.84\00:13:36.48 aren't we? I have found when we've gone to New Zealand 00:13:36.68\00:13:39.45 there isn't very much that you can find of health food. 00:13:39.71\00:13:42.72 It's very hard to find things to eat. 00:13:43.65\00:13:46.65 It's hard. You have a lot here in Sydney 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.19 so you've got everything in terms of health food. 00:13:49.39\00:13:54.33 The choices that you have... you have a lot. Yeah, yeah. 00:13:54.53\00:13:57.23 You are blessed. It is good. 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.54 So you obviously met a lady? A lady came into your life? 00:14:00.74\00:14:05.04 Tell us a little bit about that. Oh yeah! 00:14:05.24\00:14:07.38 She went... When I was working in the commercial world 00:14:08.61\00:14:14.48 she was in the office, so you know how things happen. 00:14:14.68\00:14:18.72 And we got married and three children were born. Uh-huh. 00:14:18.92\00:14:24.63 We brought them up in the church. They are all big now. 00:14:25.19\00:14:27.40 They are all in New Zealand and they're all doing well. 00:14:27.60\00:14:31.10 They are all doing well in New Zealand 00:14:31.30\00:14:32.63 and we have grandchildren. 00:14:32.83\00:14:34.17 OK. We are so blessed with grandchildren. 00:14:34.37\00:14:36.71 Let's look at a photo. There we are! You are a young man there! 00:14:36.91\00:14:40.91 Your children are young? The oldest one, right at the 00:14:42.88\00:14:46.15 back there, I think he's just become a daddy after 34 years. 00:14:46.35\00:14:52.02 Yeah, yeah... I was a young man, and of course 00:14:52.22\00:14:56.56 the youngest one in the middle is now a dairy farmer. 00:14:56.76\00:15:00.90 He looks after a big dairy farm in New Zealand 00:15:02.03\00:15:04.17 and my daughter which is the family "driver. " 00:15:04.37\00:15:08.14 She drives everything in the family. 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.04 Yes, she is also in New Zealand. 00:15:11.77\00:15:14.28 This was a good time; it was a time when... 00:15:16.18\00:15:19.71 when you have everybody together in the family. 00:15:19.91\00:15:22.45 It's always good to look back at a photo and remember. 00:15:22.65\00:15:27.22 I often look back. You know, God has really looked after us. 00:15:27.89\00:15:31.63 There's a lot of things that happen in this world 00:15:32.03\00:15:34.73 but to be together still as a family and have grandchildren 00:15:34.93\00:15:38.13 that's a special blessing from God. 00:15:38.33\00:15:40.27 It is a special blessing. Definitely! 00:15:40.47\00:15:42.94 So you're retired now, George. Is that right? 00:15:43.27\00:15:46.21 I am retired now. I spent all of my time or most of my time 00:15:46.41\00:15:51.88 in the work of the Lord, the medical missionary work 00:15:52.08\00:15:54.85 especially in Fiji in a place where 00:15:55.05\00:15:59.02 we have so much going right now in terms of lifestyle diseases. 00:15:59.42\00:16:04.49 Hmm! Non-communicable diseases. 00:16:04.69\00:16:07.46 There's just a big need for it out there, especially for 00:16:07.86\00:16:10.67 the church. What can we do to help those out there? 00:16:10.87\00:16:15.04 And these become the chronic diseases... not acute. 00:16:15.24\00:16:18.77 Things that have been taking from... from doing things 00:16:18.97\00:16:23.21 incorrectly for a long period of time 00:16:23.41\00:16:25.91 these things become apparent 00:16:26.11\00:16:28.08 that have been slowly building up in the body until finally 00:16:28.28\00:16:33.39 they're chronic. You know, there are basically two... 00:16:33.79\00:16:37.33 two disease problems in Fiji. 00:16:37.53\00:16:38.93 One is communicable disease - um-hmm - 00:16:39.13\00:16:40.63 and one is non-communicable disease. We call it 00:16:40.83\00:16:44.10 NCD's in short - um-hmm - 00:16:44.30\00:16:46.30 which is really chronic lifestyle diseases. Yes. 00:16:46.50\00:16:49.87 Well, the balance has tipped now where non-communicable disease 00:16:50.31\00:16:55.64 is much much more and the communicable diseases 00:16:55.84\00:16:58.75 you know they've managed to phase that out - yes - 00:16:58.95\00:17:02.28 with modern technology. But non-communicable diseases 00:17:02.48\00:17:07.56 it's hard. It's something that you bring it on yourself. 00:17:07.72\00:17:11.13 So you've been involved since you opened up the health food 00:17:11.33\00:17:14.20 shop, the first one in Fiji as you mentioned, 00:17:14.40\00:17:16.53 you've seen a change, George? A big change? No. 00:17:16.73\00:17:20.84 There is no change for many reasons. 00:17:21.04\00:17:24.77 On one side we see the change in technology 00:17:25.17\00:17:28.44 increasing all the time; 00:17:28.64\00:17:29.98 new medicine and lots of money invested in medical work... 00:17:30.05\00:17:35.85 and on the other side we see increases in non-communicable 00:17:36.25\00:17:39.79 diseases also. So there is no change for the better 00:17:39.99\00:17:43.49 but change for the worse maybe. Yes! Um-hmm. 00:17:43.69\00:17:46.73 Keeps going up. These non-communicable diseases 00:17:46.93\00:17:51.23 are on the increase and that's related to what? 00:17:51.43\00:17:55.14 Is that lifestyle? 80% of people who die in hospital 00:17:55.34\00:18:00.04 die from non-communicable disease in Fiji. 00:18:00.24\00:18:02.48 Eighty percent? Eighty percent! 00:18:02.68\00:18:04.01 Right now it's 80% in Fiji. 00:18:04.11\00:18:07.08 There's a big plague sweeping across the Pacific islands 00:18:07.28\00:18:10.79 right now. Diabetes: number one. 00:18:10.99\00:18:13.25 Heart diseases. All this from... food. 00:18:14.19\00:18:17.86 There's four major reasons: 00:18:18.06\00:18:19.56 food, lifestyle changes, 00:18:19.96\00:18:22.50 lack of exercise - um-hmm - increase in alcohol consumption, 00:18:22.70\00:18:25.90 and cigarette smoking. 00:18:26.10\00:18:28.14 These are the four main reasons. 00:18:28.34\00:18:29.90 You know, you kind of think of the expense of cigarettes 00:18:30.11\00:18:32.57 and alcohol - and alcohol. They're expensive, and so how... 00:18:32.77\00:18:35.91 you know, how do people afford those things? 00:18:36.11\00:18:38.45 But yet they always seem to have something! 00:18:38.65\00:18:40.55 They always seem to have something. 00:18:40.75\00:18:42.08 Government keeps increasing duty, but lately we've seen 00:18:42.12\00:18:46.05 a decrease in it. It is where the church 00:18:46.25\00:18:49.02 comes in to try and quell this smoking problem 00:18:49.22\00:18:54.63 and alcohol problem in society. Yeah. 00:18:54.83\00:18:57.43 So just looking at the infor- mation that you've got with us 00:18:57.63\00:19:02.70 we've got a graph here of what's happening in Fiji. 00:19:02.90\00:19:05.44 Can you just talk to us about that? 00:19:05.64\00:19:07.61 Well this was a survey done by Deakins Invest in Melbourne. 00:19:07.81\00:19:12.85 It's a survey that relates to consumption... 00:19:13.05\00:19:16.32 food consumption and diseases. 00:19:16.52\00:19:18.49 You can see on the blue side the preferences... what people 00:19:18.69\00:19:23.83 prefer. They prefer processed foods. Fifty-seven percent - 00:19:24.03\00:19:28.56 yeah - of the people in Fiji prefer processed foods 00:19:28.76\00:19:31.90 for reasons... especially those that are in the higher 00:19:32.10\00:19:37.07 echelon of society, those that worked - um-hmm - 00:19:37.27\00:19:39.57 processed foods are affordable. It's easier for them. 00:19:39.84\00:19:43.71 Convenient. Yeah, convenient. 00:19:43.91\00:19:45.61 And you have the fast foods: 29% fast foods. 00:19:46.35\00:19:52.25 Easy to get hold of. So easy to get hold of. 00:19:52.45\00:19:54.16 But I think this is typical in a Western society which is 00:19:54.39\00:19:59.43 slowly creeping into the Fijian society. 00:19:59.63\00:20:02.06 And the fresh fruits and vegetables right down. In fact, 00:20:02.26\00:20:05.70 I was reading a report the other day. It says 00:20:05.90\00:20:08.97 90% of people in Fiji do not eat 00:20:09.87\00:20:15.31 the required amount of fruits and vegetables daily. 00:20:16.75\00:20:19.45 Yes. I would say it's very similar in Australia. 00:20:20.28\00:20:23.59 It's so easily available in the shops. 00:20:24.45\00:20:28.42 And if you look per kilo, it's so much cheaper than other food. 00:20:28.62\00:20:32.26 But people don't buy it because they want the other "stuff" 00:20:33.29\00:20:38.40 that maybe has a different flavor or something. 00:20:38.60\00:20:40.84 Whereas the fruit today often is picked too early 00:20:41.00\00:20:44.31 to get it to market 00:20:44.51\00:20:45.84 and so it hasn't produced the sugar intake for the flavor. 00:20:46.07\00:20:51.31 And so it doesn't taste necessarily very good. 00:20:51.51\00:20:53.68 That's the same problem we have back there. What else could 00:20:53.88\00:20:56.89 be compounded more by the pocket, what a person can 00:20:57.09\00:21:02.22 afford. I think everybody has got that! Yeah, this is where 00:21:02.42\00:21:05.86 government plays a major role. I think government should put a 00:21:06.06\00:21:08.56 lot more taxes into imported food. Say fifty years ago... 00:21:08.76\00:21:11.17 fifty years ago diabetes was unheard in Fiji. 00:21:11.37\00:21:15.14 It was really down there. Not many heart problems. Um-hmm. 00:21:15.34\00:21:18.64 But with increase of importation - yes - 00:21:18.84\00:21:21.34 flour, wheat, processed foods come into the country 00:21:21.54\00:21:25.21 diabetes has just gone up right away. 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.95 The fast food restaurant. Fast food. 00:21:28.15\00:21:29.88 We are chopping... Sorry, we are amputating 00:21:30.09\00:21:33.29 one leg every eight hours which is three legs a day. 00:21:34.82\00:21:39.59 That's a lot! Three legs a day which is quite a bit. 00:21:39.79\00:21:42.10 In the whole Pacific. One toe... one toe... 00:21:42.30\00:21:47.37 Sorry... sorry. It is about 00:21:48.97\00:21:51.81 20 toes in every 20 minutes or something like that. Umm! 00:21:52.87\00:21:57.31 What you're saying is there is a real problem. 00:21:58.31\00:22:01.35 You know, I just want to mention that when you look at 00:22:01.55\00:22:04.62 that little graph, food plays a really important part 00:22:04.82\00:22:09.36 as to your health. And you've got a burden to help people, 00:22:09.56\00:22:13.19 haven't you George? You know, in what you're doing. 00:22:13.40\00:22:15.96 You want to reach people with good health: 00:22:16.16\00:22:18.53 good practices for eating, drinking, exercise. 00:22:18.73\00:22:24.54 And we call that, and I'm sure you know, NEWSTART. 00:22:24.74\00:22:28.18 They are the fundamental things that build a person's health. 00:22:28.38\00:22:31.91 And so you could avoid having things like diabetes too. 00:22:32.31\00:22:36.12 And so there's a whole lot of issues, and you are really 00:22:36.32\00:22:39.15 out there in your retirement age 00:22:39.35\00:22:41.09 trying to help people to live a healthier life. 00:22:41.29\00:22:45.09 Is that right? It is so pivotal 00:22:45.29\00:22:47.40 that everybody has to get in together 00:22:47.60\00:22:51.43 from outside of the church. 00:22:51.63\00:22:52.97 Trying to... you know, we have a major role to play. 00:22:53.57\00:22:56.60 This is where government and the SDA church in Fiji 00:22:56.81\00:23:00.24 are working together trying to put things together. 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.91 And of course we need a lot of education for the schools 00:23:03.11\00:23:08.85 from the other organizations that are there to try and 00:23:09.05\00:23:11.52 teach people - educate, educate, educate - 00:23:11.72\00:23:14.42 on the right choices of food so that we could fight against 00:23:14.62\00:23:17.96 these diseases. 00:23:18.36\00:23:19.96 There's a lot of different acronyms that are used for 00:23:20.16\00:23:22.66 the health... the ways to keep healthy. 00:23:23.06\00:23:26.33 NEWSTART is one of them though there are more. 00:23:26.53\00:23:30.54 And just for our viewers who don't know 00:23:30.94\00:23:33.94 the N stands for nutrition. Um-hmm. Right? 00:23:34.14\00:23:37.05 E for exercise. 00:23:37.25\00:23:38.98 W for water. 00:23:39.18\00:23:40.52 S for sunshine... sunlight? 00:23:41.12\00:23:43.32 Yep! T for temperance. 00:23:43.52\00:23:45.89 Then you've got A for air; R for rest; 00:23:46.99\00:23:49.92 and the last T is for trusting God or a higher power 00:23:50.13\00:23:53.66 where we say God because we believe in God. 00:23:53.86\00:23:55.66 We look after our body because God has given us 00:23:55.86\00:23:58.53 this body. How we treat it and what we do with it 00:23:58.73\00:24:02.20 impacts our lifespan, what we can do to help others, 00:24:02.40\00:24:06.74 our quality of life. There are so many things. 00:24:06.94\00:24:09.01 Sometimes we forget about sunlight. 00:24:09.21\00:24:12.11 Water. Water is so essential you know. Over 70% of your body 00:24:12.95\00:24:16.75 is water, so why not have your 8 glasses of water a day? 00:24:16.95\00:24:21.29 And in winter we're less likely to drink very much because 00:24:21.49\00:24:24.49 we don't think about the fact that our body is dehydrated. 00:24:24.69\00:24:27.76 Exactly. The cold air actually dehydrates us 00:24:27.96\00:24:32.10 but we only think about drinking on a hot day. 00:24:32.30\00:24:35.04 And yet we should be drinking all the time. 00:24:35.44\00:24:37.44 That is the beauty of our health message. 00:24:37.84\00:24:40.01 It is a holistic message. That's right. 00:24:40.21\00:24:42.31 There are many health messages out there. Ours, I think is 00:24:42.51\00:24:47.78 the holistic approach with mental, social, spiritual - 00:24:47.98\00:24:50.92 that's right - and the physical outlook & the person as a whole. 00:24:51.12\00:24:55.16 I think one of the problems just going back to water 00:24:55.36\00:24:58.66 is that people think: "Oh well I drink tea and I drink coffee. 00:24:58.86\00:25:02.23 I'm getting water. " But is that good enough? 00:25:02.43\00:25:05.43 No. No it's not. Better not to drink... 00:25:06.43\00:25:08.84 Tea and coffee actually are - dehydrates - diuretics and they 00:25:09.04\00:25:12.94 take the water out of our bodies. 00:25:13.41\00:25:14.74 So you need to drink water... good water. 00:25:14.91\00:25:18.05 So George, tell us a little bit. In Fiji when you 00:25:18.45\00:25:22.72 look at what you are trying to accomplish 00:25:23.12\00:25:26.02 are people ready and open to receive it now? 00:25:26.22\00:25:29.12 Now that we are seeing these diseases increasing that are 00:25:29.32\00:25:32.63 lifestyle related are people willing to listen to you? 00:25:32.83\00:25:36.26 I think the time is right right now. 00:25:36.67\00:25:39.13 Everybody is out there. Everybody is talking about it 00:25:39.33\00:25:43.44 like government. There are agen- cies and especially the church. 00:25:44.44\00:25:48.41 The church has come out in a very big way. 00:25:48.61\00:25:50.25 Thankfully the South Pacific Division 00:25:50.65\00:25:53.42 they rolled out a lot of programs 00:25:53.62\00:25:55.68 specifically dealing with the non-communicable diseases 00:25:55.88\00:25:59.32 that we are experiencing. Yeah. 00:25:59.52\00:26:01.79 Are they working with the government now? 00:26:01.99\00:26:03.73 Working with the government... we are working with 00:26:03.93\00:26:05.26 the government. The govern- ment has kind of gone to 00:26:05.39\00:26:07.43 to the stage to say: "Hey, you know, we've gotten to 00:26:07.63\00:26:09.83 the stage that whatever you can do we'll do. " 00:26:10.03\00:26:12.43 So we've got this program going with the 00:26:12.63\00:26:15.14 CHIP Program - um-hmm - and of course we've got 00:26:15.34\00:26:19.11 this program: a contextualized version of the CHIP Program 00:26:19.31\00:26:22.74 which is rolled out to villages. 00:26:22.94\00:26:26.38 It's an intervention program for diabetes. 00:26:26.58\00:26:29.08 And we are quite happy that the government has accepted 00:26:29.28\00:26:32.55 that program to be the go-to program for villages in Fiji. 00:26:32.75\00:26:35.96 That's exciting! Yeah, that is exciting! We've got a picture 00:26:37.63\00:26:40.43 here of you? Who is that in the middle there? 00:26:40.63\00:26:44.80 That is the president of Fiji. 00:26:45.57\00:26:47.57 That is the president of Fiji. You know, it shows how... 00:26:47.77\00:26:50.97 how the church has connected to the highest authorities 00:26:51.17\00:26:54.64 of the land. And we brought down Dr. Hans Diehl 00:26:54.84\00:26:59.48 who was in Fiji for about seven days. 00:26:59.68\00:27:04.75 And we had the opportunity to go up there, and to the right 00:27:04.95\00:27:08.02 of the president we have Sharon from the Sanitarium, 00:27:08.22\00:27:12.19 Australia. Um-hmm. 00:27:12.39\00:27:13.73 And Dr. Paul Wood of Trans-Pacific Union Mission. 00:27:13.90\00:27:17.63 And of course church officials to the left 00:27:17.83\00:27:21.57 with our church secretary and our health director 00:27:21.77\00:27:25.04 on the far left, Dr. Alipate, who is the leader of 00:27:25.24\00:27:28.28 the health ministry in Fiji. 00:27:28.48\00:27:31.11 So there we have the president. 00:27:31.31\00:27:32.71 He's in favor of what you were doing? 00:27:32.91\00:27:34.98 The president is so much in favor of what we are doing 00:27:35.18\00:27:37.62 and the government is in favor of what we are doing 00:27:37.82\00:27:39.65 that they have come on board and partnered up with us. 00:27:39.85\00:27:42.96 They see that this is going to benefit the people of Fiji. Yes. 00:27:43.16\00:27:47.70 Bring back some health? 00:27:47.90\00:27:49.23 Bring back. We need programs to educate the people. 00:27:49.43\00:27:52.87 It's so expensive for govern- ments to be looking after 00:27:53.27\00:27:56.84 sick people. 45% of the health budget 00:27:57.04\00:28:00.58 is for non-communicable diseases only. 00:28:00.98\00:28:04.51 And that's quite a lot. 00:28:04.71\00:28:06.05 But then you look at how much of the government's budget 00:28:06.11\00:28:10.25 is for health - exactly - paying for hospitals 00:28:10.45\00:28:14.46 and other medical things to help people who have got 00:28:14.66\00:28:17.69 diseases that something can be done about. 00:28:17.89\00:28:20.13 And if you are going to introduce bypass surgery 00:28:20.33\00:28:25.97 into Fiji then that will drain a lot more, wouldn't it? 00:28:26.17\00:28:29.34 Oh! You know, those procedures are so expensive 00:28:29.54\00:28:32.44 and we just can't afford it. 00:28:32.64\00:28:33.98 So really we have to start turning the tap off 00:28:34.01\00:28:37.85 instead of mopping the floor all the time. 00:28:38.05\00:28:40.82 I like that, I like that George. Very good! Very good. Yeah. 00:28:41.02\00:28:44.25 And so you've got 10,000 Toes is another thing the church is 00:28:44.65\00:28:48.92 doing there? 10,000 Toes is a big project going on now. 00:28:49.12\00:28:52.56 We are trying to work with the churches 00:28:53.03\00:28:55.66 and with the villages in creating awareness 00:28:55.86\00:28:59.23 amongst the people on what we can do 00:28:59.43\00:29:02.80 and what we shouldn't do 00:29:03.00\00:29:04.67 to have this disease under control. 00:29:04.87\00:29:07.94 And the stubble of legs and toes from being amputated? 00:29:08.14\00:29:11.01 That's a big problem. We have a challenge in front of us. 00:29:11.21\00:29:15.02 We want to save 10,000 toes. 00:29:15.22\00:29:17.22 Umm! You know, the thing is, George, 00:29:17.42\00:29:19.55 and I'm talking with George Kwong here and John, 00:29:19.75\00:29:22.82 diabetes type II doesn't have to happen. No. 00:29:24.23\00:29:29.46 And yet we bring it on ourselves 00:29:30.47\00:29:33.50 by eating all of those processed foods and those fast foods 00:29:34.60\00:29:39.01 instead of eating fresh food: 00:29:39.41\00:29:42.54 things that have been grown which God gave us to eat. 00:29:42.74\00:29:46.08 Back in Genesis in the Garden of Eden 00:29:46.28\00:29:48.78 it was a plant-based diet. 00:29:49.18\00:29:51.65 And He only introduced animals after the flood 00:29:52.89\00:29:56.26 because it would bring down the lifespan of men. 00:29:56.46\00:30:01.03 Men were living so long they were becoming so evil - 00:30:01.23\00:30:03.67 right - through their long life 00:30:03.87\00:30:06.94 that He need to decrease the length of their days 00:30:07.14\00:30:10.84 so He allowed them to eat meat. Meat was not meant 00:30:11.04\00:30:13.68 to keep us alive. Meat we meant to cut our life short. 00:30:13.88\00:30:18.38 It's fruit and vegetables and other plant-based food 00:30:19.31\00:30:23.72 that we should be eating as well as the air, the water, 00:30:23.92\00:30:26.35 the exercise, etc. Exactly! 00:30:26.55\00:30:28.02 Proper amount of sleep. And so diabetes 00:30:28.22\00:30:31.93 is something that can be changed. And the CHIP Program 00:30:32.13\00:30:35.56 works with heart disease and things like that as well 00:30:35.76\00:30:38.40 to make us healthy. Unfortu- nately we have this paradigm 00:30:39.47\00:30:43.27 that you cannot change diabetes, that you cannot reverse 00:30:43.47\00:30:46.37 diabetes. And I think we have a message out there 00:30:46.57\00:30:52.11 to tell the people: "Yes, you can do something about it. " 00:30:52.31\00:30:55.65 We can do something about it. 00:30:56.45\00:30:57.85 And there's lots of health issues that changing your 00:30:58.05\00:31:01.82 lifestyle will totally clear up... others that it will help. 00:31:02.02\00:31:06.49 Isn't that true? I'm so grateful that this lifestyle medicine 00:31:06.90\00:31:10.87 concept is beginning to explode. 00:31:11.07\00:31:14.17 It's getting some momentum now. Getting a lot of momentum. 00:31:14.37\00:31:17.24 which really is to me I'd like to say it is a SDA 00:31:17.44\00:31:21.44 health message. Yes! 00:31:21.64\00:31:23.04 It is something that was given to us way back there. 00:31:23.24\00:31:27.15 It's a God-given health message because it's in line with 00:31:27.35\00:31:32.55 what He said in His Word, in the Bible. Right. 00:31:32.75\00:31:34.89 So George, you are pretty much immersed in this 00:31:35.29\00:31:39.26 concept of teaching people about the health message. 00:31:39.46\00:31:43.10 What are you actually doing yourself 00:31:43.30\00:31:45.37 in this work in Fiji? Tell us a little bit about that. 00:31:45.57\00:31:48.84 I'm actually working with the church in Fiji, so 00:31:49.04\00:31:53.04 I have the Western Division in Fiji which is where 00:31:53.24\00:31:57.51 the international airport is. Nadi Int'l. Airport. 00:31:57.71\00:32:00.58 So if you fly into Fiji, the first place you would land 00:32:00.78\00:32:05.25 is Nadi International Airport. Um-hmm. 00:32:05.45\00:32:06.89 OK. In the Nadi Division we have 20 churches... 00:32:07.29\00:32:10.03 20 SDA churches. 00:32:10.23\00:32:12.86 So what we try to do is to strategically 00:32:13.06\00:32:17.60 strategically place ourselves 00:32:17.80\00:32:22.34 where we could become centers of influence wherever we are. 00:32:22.74\00:32:26.61 So we are using the zoning model 00:32:26.81\00:32:30.51 where we zone one church to take care of this particular area. 00:32:30.71\00:32:36.15 So we've got places zoned out, the 20 churches zoned, 00:32:36.35\00:32:40.82 and I've been working on setting up the churches 00:32:41.02\00:32:44.79 to become wellness centers - OK - in their various respective 00:32:44.99\00:32:48.76 zones. Teaching them; giving them the equipment 00:32:48.96\00:32:54.04 like the BP monitor, the sugar diabetes 00:32:54.24\00:32:58.54 glucometers - um-hmm - and so on. 00:32:58.74\00:33:01.51 And we had a plan to have 10 wellness centers by the end 00:33:02.24\00:33:06.38 of this year. So far we have seven up and running. 00:33:06.58\00:33:09.92 OK. Very good! So that's where people come from the community 00:33:10.12\00:33:13.86 around that church area? People come from the community 00:33:14.06\00:33:15.86 and the church becomes the wellness center. 00:33:16.06\00:33:19.79 The church becomes a place where they can 00:33:20.00\00:33:23.10 come to and learn about nutrition. 00:33:23.30\00:33:26.00 They learn about exercise. 00:33:26.20\00:33:27.70 They learn about how to prevent diabetes. 00:33:27.90\00:33:30.54 How not to have a heart attack. 00:33:30.74\00:33:32.41 And we have programs like Forgive to Live programs 00:33:32.61\00:33:36.24 that's running in the churches. Umm. 00:33:36.44\00:33:37.88 So it is working very very effectively. 00:33:38.28\00:33:41.92 Now just... You mentioned the Forgive to Live. 00:33:42.12\00:33:43.92 Now that's a program on teaching people about being able to 00:33:44.12\00:33:47.89 give forgiveness for their health's sake. 00:33:48.09\00:33:50.23 For their health's sake. Because being unforgiving 00:33:50.43\00:33:53.70 and holding a grudge and bitterness towards someone 00:33:53.90\00:33:56.16 can have a terrible impact on your physical and mental health. 00:33:56.36\00:33:59.93 Isn't that true? Your attitude can affect your health. 00:34:00.14\00:34:02.87 It's... I think it's been scientifically proven 00:34:03.27\00:34:06.64 that various things that hold you back 00:34:06.84\00:34:10.41 affect various organs of the body. 00:34:10.61\00:34:12.58 High blood pressure and your mental ability. 00:34:12.78\00:34:17.09 Mental ability... so it's a very good program. 00:34:17.29\00:34:19.62 So it's a holistic approach again. Very good! 00:34:19.82\00:34:22.62 So you've seen some changes in people, 00:34:22.82\00:34:24.89 and we've got a slide of before and after, 00:34:25.09\00:34:27.03 and I think it'd be good to have a look 00:34:27.23\00:34:30.20 at the impact of what you are doing and the church is doing 00:34:30.40\00:34:33.23 in helping people with their health. 00:34:33.44\00:34:35.37 Now tell us about this one. Well, this guy 00:34:35.57\00:34:38.61 he is Ilatea. His name is Ilatea. He is... 00:34:38.81\00:34:41.74 he's an auditor in a big bank, the VSP Bank. 00:34:41.94\00:34:44.48 One of the big banks in Fiji. 00:34:44.68\00:34:46.15 And he got to the stage where he was having sleep apnea 00:34:46.55\00:34:51.89 and he was overweight and all kinds of problems. 00:34:52.09\00:34:54.89 And the doctors told him: "You'd better go to India 00:34:55.09\00:34:56.93 and have a stapled stomach. " 00:34:57.13\00:35:01.26 Yeah, stapled stomach. But he was so concerned 00:35:01.46\00:35:05.07 that he couldn't even walk his daughter to school 00:35:05.27\00:35:08.54 and the daughter started crying because he couldn't go... 00:35:08.74\00:35:10.67 even though she couldn't go with her father. 00:35:10.87\00:35:13.48 So he decided that he'd do something. 00:35:13.88\00:35:16.54 He's heard a lot of programs - 00:35:16.75\00:35:18.11 but he was skeptical - um-hmm - until somebody told him 00:35:18.31\00:35:22.55 "You'd better try the CHIP Program, the SDA CHIP Program. " 00:35:22.75\00:35:25.75 Um-hmm. And he went along to one of the information nights 00:35:25.95\00:35:29.59 and he attended a CHIP Program. 00:35:29.79\00:35:31.99 And he followed it? He was 140 kilograms. 00:35:32.19\00:35:35.00 I'm not surprised. 00:35:35.20\00:35:36.83 140 kilograms. He invested $6,000 00:35:37.03\00:35:40.44 in a sleeping machine because he had sleep apnea. 00:35:40.64\00:35:44.71 You know, those oxygen bottles. Yes. 00:35:44.91\00:35:46.24 And one year later look at a picture: there he is. 00:35:46.54\00:35:51.95 You're kidding! He came down to about 90 kg. 00:35:52.15\00:35:55.92 And he says he's full of energy. 00:35:56.12\00:35:58.55 He's got to get up in the morning and go swimming 00:35:58.75\00:36:00.96 and go running. For his family! And enjoy his family. 00:36:01.12\00:36:04.53 He is now a CHIP facilitator in the Methodist church 00:36:04.73\00:36:08.03 in his church. And I bet he runs his daughter to school! 00:36:08.33\00:36:11.43 He runs his daughter to school! 00:36:11.67\00:36:13.07 Yes. Physically runs! So that's one of the things 00:36:13.27\00:36:16.07 that's why the government is on board. 00:36:16.27\00:36:19.34 "Hey, you know, you people have the answer! " 00:36:19.91\00:36:22.21 And what happened to his sleep apnea machine? 00:36:22.41\00:36:24.28 Gone! He says: "I shouldn't have bought 00:36:24.48\00:36:28.28 a sleep apnea machine because a week later I did CHIP 00:36:28.48\00:36:31.49 after buying it, but now it's sitting in the corner at home. " 00:36:31.69\00:36:35.06 A reminder! A reminder, yes... a reminder. 00:36:35.92\00:36:39.83 Sometimes we need a reminder. A $6,000 reminder. 00:36:40.03\00:36:42.80 So do you have any other stories that you can tell us 00:36:43.93\00:36:46.84 of the success of what you're doing? You know, you said 00:36:47.04\00:36:49.77 you've got up seven wellness centers? Yes! 00:36:49.97\00:36:52.54 We've got a couple of pictures that we'll have a look at. 00:36:53.74\00:36:57.85 Yes, this is... you see at the background there: that's what 00:36:59.51\00:37:02.78 they call the Sleeping Giant. 00:37:02.98\00:37:04.79 The huge mountain = the Sleeping Giant. 00:37:04.99\00:37:07.12 And there's a village out here called Sabeto Village. 00:37:07.32\00:37:10.93 Um-hmm. This is in the west of Fiji again 00:37:11.09\00:37:13.93 and that's their church. Strong traditional Methodist group. 00:37:14.13\00:37:20.07 And that's the chief's house right there or part of the 00:37:20.27\00:37:22.70 chief's house. And some time ago, say about 7 years ago, 00:37:22.90\00:37:26.94 SDAs wanted to build a church there 00:37:27.24\00:37:30.38 and they weren't allowed. They were told to... to go away. 00:37:30.58\00:37:34.18 Um-hmm. Each church has basically got their villages? 00:37:34.38\00:37:39.49 Haven't they? Yeah... yeah... yeah. 00:37:39.69\00:37:41.36 But we were told: "You cannot build your church here. 00:37:41.76\00:37:46.59 We have a very big Methodist church in here. " 00:37:46.80\00:37:48.56 So they wanted us to go out, so we went out until 00:37:48.76\00:37:52.97 we started this health assessment program. 00:37:53.17\00:37:56.60 We go to villages assessing people, telling them 00:37:56.81\00:37:59.64 "You have high blood sugar... diabetes. " 00:37:59.84\00:38:02.81 And then the chief heard about it. Um-hmm. 00:38:03.01\00:38:06.92 They invited us back into their village. 00:38:07.75\00:38:10.72 Invited us into his home. 00:38:10.92\00:38:13.52 I think there's a slide... a slide there of them there. 00:38:13.72\00:38:15.92 Another slide there. Yes, there it is! Yes. 00:38:17.43\00:38:20.36 Now that man is who? That man: that's the chief of the village. 00:38:20.56\00:38:24.33 And that's the wife on the left side. They wanted us to come in 00:38:24.53\00:38:28.37 and do health assessment. They have their health problems. 00:38:28.57\00:38:31.14 Um-hmm. And we spent two hours 00:38:31.34\00:38:34.08 inside the chief's house. That's not usual in Fiji 00:38:34.58\00:38:40.42 for anybody to just go into a chief's house 00:38:41.35\00:38:43.99 and have a chat with him. 00:38:44.19\00:38:45.75 But he invited us into there and we spent some time 00:38:46.15\00:38:49.66 in there and told him NEWSTART. 00:38:49.86\00:38:52.99 Exercise, water, sunlight... rest. So taken back! 00:38:53.40\00:38:59.00 "You could do this to help you with this problem. " 00:38:59.20\00:39:02.74 One week later he called us back again and he said: 00:39:04.27\00:39:07.44 "I want you to come into the village 00:39:07.74\00:39:11.85 and run some health assessment programs for my people. " 00:39:12.05\00:39:15.05 So we went back in there 00:39:16.22\00:39:17.92 and we found out the problems that people never knew they had. 00:39:18.32\00:39:22.16 So we had NEWSTART lessons going on in the village. 00:39:22.56\00:39:26.09 And then he asked us again: 00:39:26.49\00:39:28.13 "Can you have one person in this village 00:39:28.33\00:39:32.40 to take care of the sick families in the village? " 00:39:32.60\00:39:35.07 So we assigned two medical missionary workers 00:39:35.97\00:39:38.67 husband and wife. And they go around to the homes 00:39:38.87\00:39:42.61 and just using simple, natural remedies 00:39:43.01\00:39:46.72 repairing the breach, you know... treating people. 00:39:47.88\00:39:50.92 Treating people. Out of that we have five families 00:39:51.32\00:39:54.99 doing Bible studies. I'm very encouraged that 00:39:55.19\00:39:59.13 he was prepared to listen. You know what it tells me? 00:39:59.33\00:40:01.80 That people are really concerned for their people. 00:40:02.20\00:40:04.63 Yes. For their health. If you have it cheap like this, 00:40:04.83\00:40:07.34 he can do a great thing and help these people 00:40:07.54\00:40:11.64 that he lives with. So you were able 00:40:11.84\00:40:14.01 to do that in that village. 00:40:14.21\00:40:15.88 And I'm encouraged by that because that's happening now. 00:40:16.28\00:40:19.31 You said, you are setting up these wellness centers 00:40:19.51\00:40:21.92 in, around, Nadi? Nadi is it? Nadi. Yeah. 00:40:22.32\00:40:26.05 and it's been successful. 00:40:26.25\00:40:28.59 Just imagine if that model 00:40:28.79\00:40:31.69 can be replicated or replicated to another ten churches! 00:40:31.89\00:40:37.73 I am hoping that by the end of next year 00:40:37.93\00:40:39.57 we'll have the whole 20 churches all wellness centers. 00:40:39.77\00:40:42.77 That will improve the lives of the people there. 00:40:42.97\00:40:46.78 Yes, definitely! So then you can move it on to another district 00:40:46.98\00:40:50.75 and move it on to another district - 00:40:50.95\00:40:52.71 exactly, yes! and on to another district. 00:40:52.91\00:40:54.82 So generally you are saying it is successful, right? 00:40:55.22\00:40:58.35 So what's the response? You know, how are the people 00:40:58.55\00:41:01.62 responding to what you are trying to share with them? 00:41:01.82\00:41:04.06 When you have people... villages that 90% of the people 00:41:04.46\00:41:09.06 have high blood pressure, people are dying, 00:41:09.26\00:41:13.84 you know, this has become the "norm" in the villages, 00:41:14.04\00:41:17.41 I think naturally they would like to say: "Hey! 00:41:17.81\00:41:21.54 this is life! These are some people that care for us. " 00:41:21.74\00:41:25.71 And we haven't seen opposition. 00:41:26.61\00:41:30.39 We used to see opposition before. 00:41:30.59\00:41:32.49 "Oh, that's a Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:41:32.69\00:41:34.29 We have a barrier with SDA churches. " 00:41:34.49\00:41:38.26 But now it's the opposite. 00:41:38.46\00:41:40.33 People see the need that they have to do something 00:41:40.53\00:41:44.17 about themselves and their families. 00:41:44.37\00:41:46.13 I think it's even more than that, George. 00:41:46.33\00:41:48.34 When you're going to help the people 00:41:49.10\00:41:51.97 you show the people that you have a care for them. 00:41:53.64\00:41:56.81 You have a concern for their welfare. 00:41:57.01\00:41:59.31 And you've got social as you said before, 00:42:00.28\00:42:04.79 social health, mental health, physical health, 00:42:04.99\00:42:08.26 and spiritual health. 00:42:08.46\00:42:09.79 And you show that you have a care and concern for people 00:42:10.03\00:42:13.19 and they're more willing to open up in other areas 00:42:13.40\00:42:17.43 because they actually see you as people who care. 00:42:17.63\00:42:21.67 They no longer see you as people we don't want here 00:42:21.87\00:42:24.81 because we don't want to know what you know. 00:42:25.01\00:42:26.74 Now they have a need and you fulfill that need 00:42:27.81\00:42:31.38 for their health benefit 00:42:31.78\00:42:33.58 and they actually see who you are. 00:42:34.28\00:42:37.65 They see you at work. 00:42:38.05\00:42:39.95 They get to know you 00:42:40.16\00:42:41.82 as people who are caring and loving. 00:42:42.02\00:42:44.36 Yes. And they are more willing to let you tell them 00:42:44.56\00:42:48.66 about God. We like to use Christ's model. 00:42:48.86\00:42:53.23 Umm. Christ's model is you mingle with the people. 00:42:53.44\00:42:56.97 Yes. Right? Um-hmm. 00:42:57.17\00:42:59.44 He showed He cared. And showed He cared for them 00:42:59.64\00:43:02.78 & then He got their confidence, He gained their confidence. 00:43:02.98\00:43:06.72 And then He said: "Hey, there's one more thing left: 00:43:07.12\00:43:09.55 follow Me. " Follow Me! 00:43:09.75\00:43:11.89 And with the health message you are able to go in 00:43:12.09\00:43:14.89 and start to mingle. 00:43:15.09\00:43:16.99 Because without that, you haven't had an opportunity 00:43:17.19\00:43:20.16 to go into many areas. These NCDs... 00:43:20.36\00:43:22.60 we believe it's the way the Lord has provided a wedge - 00:43:22.80\00:43:27.57 entering wedge - where the health message could go through 00:43:28.90\00:43:31.94 and bring people to God. 00:43:33.78\00:43:36.28 It's the right hand of the gospel. 00:43:38.55\00:43:40.98 And there's another point to it all, too, that I see 00:43:41.98\00:43:45.52 and that is the third that 00:43:46.96\00:43:52.06 is from the Western diet 00:43:52.26\00:43:54.16 is something that the people in the islands 00:43:54.36\00:43:57.50 and in Fiji we're talking about specifically 00:43:57.70\00:44:00.24 at this time but we know other island nations are the same 00:44:00.44\00:44:03.10 is food that they are not used to... 00:44:04.01\00:44:07.61 And we know in Western society that we have had these... 00:44:08.01\00:44:12.21 this type of food for a long time now. 00:44:12.41\00:44:15.18 Fast food; processed food, etc. 00:44:15.58\00:44:19.45 And we know about genetics 00:44:19.95\00:44:21.92 and the impact that that has. 00:44:22.96\00:44:24.89 And so when we bring 00:44:25.39\00:44:28.20 the wrong type of food to people who are not used to 00:44:28.70\00:44:32.17 that type of food it is going to change your genetics. 00:44:32.37\00:44:37.04 Yes. So that different... the next generation 00:44:37.24\00:44:41.14 is going to have the wrong genes turned on. 00:44:41.34\00:44:44.68 Because we know in epigenetics genes can be turned on and off 00:44:44.88\00:44:47.25 through lifestyle. Right. 00:44:47.45\00:44:49.25 And so you have the wrong lifestyle the wrong genes 00:44:49.65\00:44:52.09 will be turned on... the good genes will be turned off. 00:44:52.29\00:44:55.72 And so it's going to have an even greater impact 00:44:56.52\00:44:58.93 on society and nations like yours. 00:44:59.13\00:45:02.13 As the parents partake of these foods as children, 00:45:03.10\00:45:07.74 they grow up, they have children, 00:45:07.94\00:45:09.30 and their children are born to people who've already 00:45:09.50\00:45:12.34 started having these impacts. 00:45:12.54\00:45:14.08 So then through genetics it actually affects them even more. 00:45:14.28\00:45:17.45 I think we are beginning to pay for the price 00:45:18.21\00:45:20.85 of what happened 20-30 years ago when we started 00:45:21.05\00:45:24.55 to change our diet. Yes. I think this is 00:45:24.75\00:45:27.66 the result of it. And it will continue if we 00:45:27.86\00:45:32.19 don't do anything about it. 00:45:32.39\00:45:33.73 I mean, we see so many obese children 00:45:33.90\00:45:36.77 in our society in Western countries. 00:45:36.97\00:45:40.27 I know in Canada, the US, Australia, and probably England 00:45:40.47\00:45:44.34 and other European nations, too, 00:45:44.54\00:45:46.61 obese children is one of our big problems. 00:45:46.81\00:45:50.25 Young people having heart attacks because of the wrong 00:45:50.65\00:45:55.02 food that their parents and their grandparents ate 00:45:55.22\00:45:57.45 and the lifestyle that they've taken on. 00:45:57.65\00:45:59.99 They say there's a lot of things that are genetic 00:46:00.19\00:46:01.79 but they're genetic through the fact that 00:46:01.99\00:46:03.89 the genes are impacted but also they live the same lifestyle. 00:46:04.39\00:46:09.76 It is only when you break that cycle and change your lifestyle 00:46:10.73\00:46:14.27 that you can actually do something about fixing it. 00:46:14.47\00:46:17.37 So that's what you're teaching people to do. 00:46:18.34\00:46:20.94 Repairer of the breach. Yes! 00:46:21.14\00:46:23.14 Yes. So the long-term plan? And I know as a Fijian 00:46:24.18\00:46:29.35 what would you want for all your people in Fiji? 00:46:29.55\00:46:32.09 What is that you are trying to accomplish? 00:46:32.29\00:46:34.72 Is it just that they live better? Or what else? 00:46:34.92\00:46:38.53 What is it? I want people to be saved. 00:46:38.73\00:46:41.06 Yes. People to be saved physically and spiritually. 00:46:41.26\00:46:44.47 That is our long-term plan: that we have a lot more people 00:46:45.33\00:46:49.24 that will not be... succumb to the present circumstances 00:46:49.44\00:46:54.78 that we have. Hmm. They don't fall victim 00:46:54.98\00:46:58.65 to this plague that is sweeping across the Pacific 00:46:58.85\00:47:02.58 through ignorance and through wrong lifestyle. 00:47:02.78\00:47:06.42 A lot of them don't know what to do. 00:47:06.62\00:47:08.69 A lot of them don't know I have high blood pressure. 00:47:09.09\00:47:11.53 A lot of them don't know why do I have high blood pressure. 00:47:11.73\00:47:15.96 That's' right. And what can I do to stop this HBP? 00:47:16.16\00:47:20.94 I don't have to go and get medication for HBP if I do 00:47:21.14\00:47:25.71 this from now... if I start changing my lifestyle. 00:47:25.91\00:47:29.84 I think that's... It's an education process - yes! 00:47:30.65\00:47:33.52 which you've embarked upon, isn't it? to make people aware. 00:47:33.72\00:47:37.02 Yes. And those wellness centers are good 00:47:37.22\00:47:39.19 because they actually... When people come to a wellness 00:47:39.39\00:47:42.52 center, what happens George? What do they normally do? 00:47:42.72\00:47:44.83 When they come to a wellness center we give them 00:47:45.03\00:47:47.66 the very basic assessment of a health assessment. 00:47:47.86\00:47:52.47 They have a questionnaire they fill in about their lifestyle. 00:47:52.67\00:47:56.37 And then we try to... 00:47:56.57\00:47:58.01 The Division has this thing called My Wellness Snapshot 00:47:58.21\00:48:02.04 that they fill in. And you put it into a database 00:48:02.24\00:48:05.31 and it comes up with your answers and what you can do. 00:48:05.51\00:48:08.48 So we do have an education process. 00:48:08.68\00:48:10.55 So it gives a result and then something to change. 00:48:10.75\00:48:14.29 Something can change... what you can do to change 00:48:14.49\00:48:16.12 and offers them the back-up programs that they can come to 00:48:16.52\00:48:22.46 and be part of. So they can come back to the wellness center 00:48:22.66\00:48:25.23 and ask: "How am I going? " "How am I going? " You know? 00:48:25.43\00:48:29.04 "Am I doing right or do I need to do more? " 00:48:29.24\00:48:32.17 We need to review them. We have programs like 00:48:32.37\00:48:35.61 Five-Day Jump-Start Programs - 00:48:35.81\00:48:38.01 OK - the CHIP Program... depend- ing on their circumstances. 00:48:38.21\00:48:42.92 So are they learning how to cook good food, going back because 00:48:43.12\00:48:47.06 I know when you buy that processed food it's like 00:48:47.26\00:48:49.32 open a packet, put it in water, boil it, or some process 00:48:49.52\00:48:53.33 and that's it. But is that an art that has sort of disappeared 00:48:53.53\00:48:58.50 a little bit? Yes. Because the next generation are 00:48:58.70\00:49:01.97 learning from this generation who you are trying to reach. 00:49:02.17\00:49:04.64 Is that right? Right. We are trying to reach 00:49:04.84\00:49:06.78 you know the new generation using a lot of young people. 00:49:06.98\00:49:10.08 OK. A lot of young people to teach them to prepare food. 00:49:10.28\00:49:15.08 Prepare holistic foods and prepare healthy foods. 00:49:15.28\00:49:17.92 Hmm. That's one of the main thrusts that we have. 00:49:18.12\00:49:21.09 Because everything boils back to food and exercise. 00:49:21.59\00:49:26.33 So Fiji is a volcanic environment, is that right? 00:49:26.53\00:49:30.67 No active volcanoes. No? 00:49:30.87\00:49:33.67 There's a saying, you know... Oh, in terms of growing food! 00:49:33.87\00:49:38.04 Yes, yes, yes. We call it organic volcanic. 00:49:38.24\00:49:41.68 No... volcanic organic. Yes. 00:49:41.88\00:49:43.55 So you know, the food there must be good. 00:49:43.75\00:49:46.51 It must be good if you grow... It grows well there, doesn't it? 00:49:46.72\00:49:49.62 Food grows very well there... food grows very well. 00:49:49.82\00:49:53.56 But there is a problem. You know, the problem is that 00:49:53.76\00:49:56.26 imported foods are a lot cheaper and tastier. 00:49:56.46\00:49:59.16 Uh-huh? You know, like noodles and rice. 00:49:59.36\00:50:02.46 And has all those food enhancers. Yes. 00:50:02.66\00:50:04.87 Some of these foods the government has to step in 00:50:05.07\00:50:07.44 and say: "Hey, we are going to increase taxes on these" 00:50:07.84\00:50:10.91 so that it's a deterrent for people to keep buying that 00:50:11.11\00:50:16.01 and to turn them back into the basic plant-based foods. 00:50:16.21\00:50:20.12 And the younger generation... do they know how to grow 00:50:20.32\00:50:23.59 their food or have they just become reliant on buying things? 00:50:23.79\00:50:26.72 One of the programs that we are trying to implement 00:50:26.92\00:50:29.89 to follow-up in these wellness programs is a gardening program. 00:50:30.09\00:50:33.06 Um-hmm. Getting people back to producing their own food 00:50:33.26\00:50:37.00 in their own gardens. 00:50:37.20\00:50:38.53 Not to rely on supermarkets. I think that's very important. 00:50:38.67\00:50:44.57 I believe it is, too. Yeah. 00:50:44.77\00:50:46.44 I think also it's very impor- tant... you mentioned before 00:50:46.64\00:50:49.04 a lot of people are ignorant. They don't know 00:50:49.24\00:50:52.01 what... that this type of food is giving them these illnesses. 00:50:52.21\00:50:58.05 That it is actually the cause - 00:50:58.45\00:51:01.22 that's it! of what they don't know. 00:51:01.42\00:51:04.33 They're not told until people like yourself 00:51:04.53\00:51:07.73 come and say: "Let's give you some information here 00:51:07.93\00:51:11.67 and we will help you to know how to get well. " 00:51:12.17\00:51:14.50 The other thing is doing the cooking classes. 00:51:16.00\00:51:18.37 You mentioned, you know, teaching people how to cook. 00:51:18.57\00:51:21.28 That is SO important because we can go and tell people 00:51:22.01\00:51:25.38 "Oh, you need to change your lifestyle. " 00:51:25.78\00:51:28.02 "You need to get back and eat some other sort of food. " 00:51:28.22\00:51:30.99 Or whatever... and James in the Bible, he writes: 00:51:31.15\00:51:35.79 You know, "If you see a person who has not got 00:51:35.99\00:51:39.16 enough clothing... they're cold, they're wretched, 00:51:39.36\00:51:43.06 they're miserable sort of thing and you say: 'Oh, be 00:51:43.26\00:51:47.24 warmed and fed' and you walk off and don't supply their need 00:51:47.44\00:51:51.07 what good have you done for them? " 00:51:51.27\00:51:53.01 So you can tell them: "Oh, you need to change your 00:51:53.41\00:51:55.38 lifestyle and you need to change what you're eating" 00:51:55.58\00:51:57.38 but you have to give them the resources, the information on 00:51:57.78\00:52:01.52 HOW to do it. You have to instruct them 00:52:01.72\00:52:03.82 on how to cook healthier food; what to eat. 00:52:04.02\00:52:07.99 What is better for their health. 00:52:08.19\00:52:10.36 And things that are not hard to do 00:52:11.36\00:52:13.40 'cause people prefer to do things easier. 00:52:13.60\00:52:16.20 People are so busy these days. 00:52:16.40\00:52:17.93 So doing that is such an important point 00:52:18.70\00:52:21.14 or part of the lifestyle changes they have to make 00:52:21.34\00:52:24.64 and what you are doing for them. 00:52:24.84\00:52:26.17 Interesting you brought resources up in these lessons. 00:52:26.24\00:52:30.35 I think it's important for us to develop our own resources - 00:52:30.55\00:52:33.78 hmm - in terms of using local foods. 00:52:33.98\00:52:36.92 Make local foods more palatable; make local foods more accessible 00:52:37.12\00:52:41.56 and teach them how to USE local foods. 00:52:41.76\00:52:44.36 A lot of these resources that come out here are from America 00:52:44.56\00:52:48.16 or from Australia - hmm - 00:52:48.36\00:52:49.70 with broccoli and strawberries and all that that we don't have. 00:52:49.83\00:52:55.37 You know I'm talking about menus and recipes that come out here. 00:52:56.34\00:53:00.64 So we are working hard in trying to get our own... 00:53:00.84\00:53:04.08 our own resources. You've got good food, George. Yes! 00:53:04.28\00:53:06.68 And we've got to go out. We're going to take a moment 00:53:06.88\00:53:08.35 for a moment. We're talking with George Kwong. 00:53:08.55\00:53:10.49 He's from Fiji. He's involved in the health work. 00:53:10.69\00:53:13.56 But... And I'm sure there are some people out there 00:53:13.76\00:53:16.73 who think: "It's interesting it's happening out there. 00:53:16.93\00:53:20.20 It should be happening HERE. " 00:53:20.40\00:53:21.73 And if you are enjoying these programs, 00:53:21.76\00:53:24.23 we'd love to hear your comments about this program 00:53:24.43\00:53:27.30 and others, and we'd encourage you to continue 00:53:27.50\00:53:29.90 supporting us as you are able to. 00:53:30.11\00:53:33.71 And if you want to do that you can contact us at this address: 00:53:33.91\00:53:36.98 Thank you for all you do to help us light the world 00:54:32.27\00:54:34.74 with the glory of God's truth. 00:54:34.94\00:54:36.64 We love to hear from you so don't forget to contact us. 00:54:39.24\00:54:42.28 We also have a website address for the 10,000 Toes... 00:54:42.48\00:54:47.52 what do you call it? program that is being held 00:54:49.48\00:54:52.02 out in the islands by the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:54:52.22\00:54:55.19 to try and help people who have diabetes 00:54:55.39\00:54:57.76 to save their limbs and not have them amputated 00:54:58.16\00:55:02.26 by getting well. And it is: 00:55:02.46\00:55:04.33 So go there if you want to find out more about that program 00:55:17.71\00:55:20.98 and support it, too, if you want to. Bula. 00:55:28.96\00:55:31.36 I've never been to Fiji but it's somewhere I would like to go. 00:55:31.56\00:55:34.90 Now we're talking about the health programs that are being 00:55:36.70\00:55:39.03 run out there. Just run by us the story of a patient, 00:55:39.23\00:55:43.94 a diabetic patient in the village of Namaka. 00:55:44.14\00:55:48.81 Namaka. Yes, yes, yes. 00:55:49.01\00:55:50.95 Yeah. When we open up wellness centers one the things 00:55:51.15\00:55:54.75 we do is have a little health expo with the churches - 00:55:54.95\00:55:58.39 hmm - to reach out to the community. 00:55:58.59\00:56:01.12 And we had this man walk in. 00:56:01.92\00:56:03.79 You know, he had just been back from hospital 00:56:05.03\00:56:07.96 and they wanted to amputate his leg. 00:56:08.16\00:56:12.63 He was an Assembly of God pastor. 00:56:12.83\00:56:15.37 And he came in then he told the hospital people 00:56:15.57\00:56:19.71 "I have heard about this place in Namaka that they 00:56:19.91\00:56:24.01 can help or they do health screenings. 00:56:24.21\00:56:26.68 I think I will pass the amputation. 00:56:26.88\00:56:29.85 I won't have the amputation but I will go to them. " 00:56:30.05\00:56:33.96 Anyway, he came there 00:56:34.16\00:56:35.49 and we checked his blood sugar out and everything. 00:56:35.52\00:56:39.09 And he was really in pain. So he went home 00:56:39.29\00:56:43.53 and we sent two medical missionary young ladies there. 00:56:43.73\00:56:46.50 One of them it sitting at the back there. 00:56:46.70\00:56:48.77 And we sent these medical missionary ladies 00:56:48.97\00:56:52.91 in to work on his limb. 00:56:53.11\00:56:57.28 They changed his diet; they started and exercise program. 00:56:57.48\00:57:02.08 Complete plant-based diet. 00:57:02.28\00:57:04.35 And in three weeks there was an amazing change. 00:57:05.19\00:57:10.23 I was sitting at his workplace when I saw him walk 00:57:10.43\00:57:15.70 to come back to work. 00:57:15.90\00:57:17.47 He was bedridden, and as a result of that 00:57:17.63\00:57:21.10 he's telling all his people about this wonderful thing that 00:57:21.30\00:57:24.97 you can do to change your lifestyle 00:57:25.17\00:57:27.64 by changing your diet and just following the very simple 00:57:27.84\00:57:31.95 principles of health. 00:57:32.15\00:57:33.48 You know, that's a terrific way to conclude our program. 00:57:33.58\00:57:35.92 What we've been talking about WORKS! 00:57:36.12\00:57:38.19 And you can be involved in it too by eating right 00:57:38.39\00:57:41.19 and following God's principles. Thank you, George. 00:57:41.39\00:57:44.06 Until next time may God bless you. 00:57:44.26\00:57:45.93
