This is 3ABN Now 00:00:15.71\00:00:17.21 with John and Rosemary Malkiewycz. 00:00:17.41\00:00:19.18 Hello and welcome to 3ABN Now. 00:00:20.95\00:00:24.15 It's really good to have our audience with us again today 00:00:24.35\00:00:26.52 because we have got a great subject. 00:00:26.72\00:00:29.29 We do! It's a very important one, too. 00:00:29.49\00:00:31.49 We do! It's one that I am very interested in myself 00:00:31.69\00:00:34.90 and I think that you should be as well 00:00:35.10\00:00:38.30 because it's to do with the health of our bodies 00:00:38.50\00:00:40.87 and our minds, and through our bodies and our minds 00:00:41.07\00:00:44.07 being healthy we can appreciate God better 00:00:44.27\00:00:47.01 and have a better relationship with Him. 00:00:47.21\00:00:48.94 So if you are experiencing ill health 00:00:49.34\00:00:52.31 or you know someone who does... 00:00:52.71\00:00:54.78 and that will be nearly everybody... 00:00:54.98\00:00:57.09 you need to be watching this program today. 00:00:57.29\00:00:59.32 We're going to be talking about how the gut 00:00:59.82\00:01:02.89 and the brain work together for either our ill health 00:01:03.09\00:01:06.96 or our good health. 00:01:07.16\00:01:09.23 And today we have a couple that have been on this program - 00:01:09.43\00:01:12.50 3ABN Now - before. Um-hmm. And we really enjoyed our time 00:01:12.70\00:01:16.54 with them and they are here with us now 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.94 to talk to us about this subject 00:01:19.14\00:01:21.64 because they lecture around the world about it. 00:01:21.84\00:01:24.31 And this is Chad and Fadia Kreuzer. Welcome back! 00:01:24.71\00:01:29.08 Thank you for having us. It's really good to have you 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.15 here because this is an important subject 00:01:31.35\00:01:33.36 and you are going to take us through a whole lot of 00:01:33.56\00:01:36.36 information today. Yes! Yeah! 00:01:36.56\00:01:38.96 You know, one of the most fascinating things to me is 00:01:39.16\00:01:42.86 medical historians have looked back... Right now there is... 00:01:43.06\00:01:46.80 there is this research coming out 00:01:47.00\00:01:49.84 almost it seems daily in the medical journals 00:01:50.04\00:01:52.97 on the scientific studies on the gut/brain connection 00:01:53.17\00:01:56.71 and how what's going on in the gut can actually affect 00:01:56.91\00:02:00.22 the brain either to make you happy or depressed 00:02:00.42\00:02:03.35 or anxious. Or to dull or enhance. 00:02:03.55\00:02:06.19 That's right... exactly. 00:02:06.39\00:02:07.72 And one of the things that is fascinating is 00:02:07.92\00:02:10.83 between the human gut like our intestines and our brain 00:02:11.03\00:02:16.26 is a nerve that connects them called the vagus nerve. 00:02:16.46\00:02:18.90 Um-hmm. And the vagus nerve basically sends information 00:02:19.10\00:02:23.37 both ways, but what researchers have discovered is that 90% 00:02:23.57\00:02:26.68 of the information that travels through this nerve 00:02:26.88\00:02:29.51 actually goes from the gut to the brain 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.91 not the other way around meaning our guts 00:02:32.11\00:02:34.32 are telling... our intestines and our guts... 00:02:34.52\00:02:36.79 are actually telling our brains more 00:02:36.99\00:02:38.32 than our brains are telling our guts. 00:02:38.45\00:02:39.82 So they're talking to the brain. That's right. 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.22 And they've actually found that amazingly enough you can 00:02:42.42\00:02:44.53 sever the nerve so that it's not connected... 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.63 And you know, most of the time if you sever the connection 00:02:47.83\00:02:50.43 to the brain you're going to have serious trouble. 00:02:50.63\00:02:52.47 Something will not function after you do that. 00:02:52.67\00:02:54.57 But when it comes to the gut it can function without any 00:02:54.77\00:02:56.97 information coming from the brain. 00:02:57.17\00:02:58.84 And so researchers actually now call the gut 00:02:59.04\00:03:01.28 "the second brain. " 00:03:01.48\00:03:03.31 And back to the medical historians: they've looked 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.45 back through history to find what is the oldest scientific 00:03:07.65\00:03:12.15 study in all of recorded history. 00:03:12.35\00:03:14.49 And the National Institutes of Health in the United States 00:03:14.69\00:03:18.56 is the most well-funded medical institution on the planet. 00:03:18.96\00:03:22.10 They have a 26 billion dollar fund every year. 00:03:22.30\00:03:26.13 And there's an article that's found in the NIH 00:03:26.33\00:03:31.41 in the National Library of Medicine in the United States 00:03:31.61\00:03:33.94 and it tells us that looking back through all of history 00:03:34.14\00:03:37.25 the oldest recorded scientific study that they can find 00:03:37.45\00:03:40.88 they say is in the book of Daniel in the Bible. 00:03:41.08\00:03:43.95 Um-hmm. And that's fascinating. 00:03:44.15\00:03:46.35 And it's actually in Daniel chapter 1, and the Bible 00:03:46.55\00:03:48.86 tells us the history. Daniel was taken as a young man 00:03:49.06\00:03:52.79 from Jerusalem, the city of Jerusalem that he grew up in, 00:03:52.99\00:03:56.13 and he was taken captive by a king from Babylon: 00:03:56.33\00:03:59.47 modern-day Iraq. And he was taken as a captive 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.30 to Babylon. And he was given this food there 00:04:02.50\00:04:06.47 and it was the best food of the king, you know. 00:04:06.68\00:04:08.34 Because the best food would obviously be the meat 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.51 and you know all these luxuries that the king... 00:04:10.71\00:04:12.71 And the wine and the rich pastries or cakes or whatever. 00:04:12.91\00:04:16.99 Exactly. But Daniel... he knew there were certain foods that 00:04:17.19\00:04:19.75 he wasn't supposed to eat that were in Scripture 00:04:19.95\00:04:23.22 that God said: "these are not healthy; these are unclean 00:04:23.43\00:04:25.79 and not healthy. " And so Daniel decided 00:04:25.99\00:04:29.50 that he would actually, avoid these things - 00:04:29.70\00:04:32.83 he and his three friends - and then you begin to 00:04:33.03\00:04:35.64 see... this is actually as medical historians tell us... 00:04:35.84\00:04:38.47 the first scientific study in all of recorded history. 00:04:38.67\00:04:40.61 And maybe you could read that to us. It's found in Daniel ch. 1 00:04:40.81\00:04:44.35 and verse 12. It goes like this: 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.68 'Prove thy servants I beseech thee 00:04:46.88\00:04:49.45 ten days, and let them give us pulse to eat 00:04:49.65\00:04:53.99 and water to drink. " Boy! That's a very simple diet, 00:04:54.19\00:04:57.76 isn't it? It is! That's all for ten days? 00:04:57.96\00:05:00.30 I mean, what difference is ten days gonna make 00:05:00.50\00:05:02.86 to someone's health? And that's the fascinating thing. 00:05:03.06\00:05:04.93 You'd think: "Come on! A diet change? 00:05:05.13\00:05:06.50 It takes years for a diet to change someone. " 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.67 But the research actually today is showing 00:05:08.87\00:05:10.81 "No, it can actually take ten days. " 00:05:11.01\00:05:12.74 This has actually been tested 00:05:12.94\00:05:14.54 and Dr. Neil Nedley out of the United States 00:05:14.74\00:05:18.01 has probably the best depression program in the world. 00:05:18.21\00:05:21.82 Depression Recovery Program out of Weimar, California. 00:05:22.42\00:05:25.19 They have a 10-day program that implements this very same thing. 00:05:25.39\00:05:28.12 They find fantastic results there within ten days 00:05:28.32\00:05:31.09 reversing depression in about 99% of people. 00:05:31.29\00:05:33.86 They have a benefit to their depression in just ten days. 00:05:34.06\00:05:37.27 And so this study was done 2,000 years ago 00:05:37.47\00:05:41.17 meaning the first clinical study in all of recorded history. 00:05:41.37\00:05:44.04 And what it showed at the end of this time period 00:05:44.24\00:05:47.44 and then following that... They first thought: "Oh, you're 00:05:47.64\00:05:49.74 going to be healthy. Where are you going to get your protein? " 00:05:49.94\00:05:52.11 Maybe they didn't say that but they said: 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.38 "You're going to get unhealthy; you're going to look bad 00:05:54.58\00:05:56.52 and so forth. " It'll be bad for us. The king will think 00:05:56.72\00:05:59.59 we're not looking after you. " Yeah! 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.22 "We could be killed. " That's right! 00:06:01.42\00:06:02.99 I mean, it was scary but yet Daniel said: "No, no. Let's 00:06:03.19\00:06:05.16 just try it. " And they tried it for ten days 00:06:05.56\00:06:07.80 and Daniel and his 3 friends - we know them as Shadrach, 00:06:08.00\00:06:10.53 Meshach, and Abednego - 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.07 they ended up doing better in their "examinations " 00:06:12.10\00:06:15.64 than any of the other wise men of Babylon. 00:06:15.84\00:06:18.77 And now it makes an incredible story coming from 2,000 years 00:06:18.97\00:06:22.91 ago. But the interesting thing, too, about the study is 00:06:23.11\00:06:25.41 that it's a study of the gut/brain connection. 00:06:25.61\00:06:28.88 Meaning it's not just ANY study. 00:06:29.08\00:06:30.85 What they were eating affected their cognition. 00:06:31.05\00:06:33.79 It actually affected their mental state. Um-hmm. 00:06:33.99\00:06:37.03 And you know... Just in case someone's wondering 00:06:37.23\00:06:40.80 what pulse means, pulse means things grown from seeds. 00:06:41.00\00:06:45.20 Yes! So they went on a plant-based diet to clarify. 00:06:45.40\00:06:48.17 So Daniel and his friends go from a... the other wise men 00:06:48.37\00:06:51.94 in Babylon are on a standard meat-based diet. 00:06:52.14\00:06:55.11 The standard Babylonian diet we might say. 00:06:55.31\00:06:57.35 And the go-to a plant-based diet, and it enhances 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.28 their cognition. And some people might think: 00:07:00.48\00:07:02.82 "Well, that's neat... it's done 2,500 years ago 00:07:03.02\00:07:05.35 but does it apply to us today? " somebody might be 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.12 wondering. "Is it really really legitimate and true? " 00:07:08.32\00:07:10.99 But we actually have a video clip here 00:07:11.19\00:07:13.09 and in this video... This is from a documentary 00:07:13.29\00:07:15.06 that my wife and I produced called Ancient Health. 00:07:15.26\00:07:18.20 And the interesting thing is we're told that this has 00:07:18.40\00:07:21.20 actually been put to the test in our modern era. 00:07:21.40\00:07:24.74 And we'll see what it says. OK... let's have a look. 00:07:24.97\00:07:28.68 But the main thing that folks should be concerned about 00:07:29.11\00:07:31.88 is how long you live 00:07:32.08\00:07:33.75 and how likely are you to get disease. 00:07:33.95\00:07:36.22 And there have been three major studies published 00:07:36.42\00:07:37.89 on this subject: big meta analyses. 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.22 And these meta analyses - 00:07:40.42\00:07:42.19 and only three big ones have been published - 00:07:42.39\00:07:43.99 they show consistently that low-carb diets - 00:07:44.19\00:07:48.23 in other words low plant-food diets, 00:07:48.43\00:07:50.23 high animal-food diets - consistently they show 00:07:50.43\00:07:53.94 that they are associated with more heart disease 00:07:54.14\00:07:56.44 and more death, more mortality. 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.41 If you look around the world and you look at these people 00:07:59.81\00:08:03.04 in the blue zones, the average percentage of calories 00:08:03.24\00:08:07.78 from carbs ranges from about 00:08:07.98\00:08:10.49 50% to about 80%. 00:08:10.69\00:08:13.15 Carbs are not the enemy... refined carbs are the enemy. 00:08:13.56\00:08:17.53 There have been a number of recent studies 00:08:17.69\00:08:19.73 Dr. Beezhold out of Phoenix, AZ. First, she did an observational 00:08:19.93\00:08:24.07 study showing that plant-based diet actually significantly 00:08:24.27\00:08:29.60 improves your depression and anxiety stress score. 00:08:29.80\00:08:33.38 It's called the DASS score. 00:08:33.58\00:08:35.78 So the mood actually is improved 00:08:36.18\00:08:39.25 when you get the right amount of carbohydrates 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.82 but also the right type of carbohydrates & less protein. 00:08:42.02\00:08:45.45 Then she followed up with an interventional study, 00:08:46.05\00:08:48.69 and that's where she took people who are not on a plant-based 00:08:48.89\00:08:51.93 diet and put them on a plant- based diet for two weeks. 00:08:52.13\00:08:54.60 She also put them on a plant-based diet plus fish 00:08:54.80\00:08:57.30 for two weeks to see which one would be superior. 00:08:57.70\00:09:00.34 And it turned out the fish diet wasn't any more superior 00:09:00.74\00:09:03.77 than the carnivore diet. But the plant-based diet 00:09:03.97\00:09:06.41 significant dramatic changes - 00:09:06.61\00:09:09.34 statistically significant changes - in just two weeks 00:09:09.54\00:09:12.51 in their mental ability. 00:09:12.71\00:09:14.22 We see when people go on this diet and drink plenty of water, 00:09:14.42\00:09:17.75 get plenty of rest... follow these natural remedies 00:09:17.95\00:09:20.42 that they... it's just like something snaps in their brain. 00:09:20.62\00:09:23.06 And it doesn't take like weeks or months. 00:09:23.26\00:09:25.33 Plant-based diet is key in our program for depression 00:09:25.53\00:09:28.66 and anxiety recovery. The results are outstanding 00:09:28.86\00:09:31.83 because it's a comprehensive approach. It's not just diet. 00:09:32.03\00:09:34.80 We also utilize exercise and we're utilizing correct thoughts 00:09:35.00\00:09:38.47 and a lot of different modalities. 00:09:38.67\00:09:40.24 But the diet is a key element. 00:09:40.44\00:09:43.04 I went on a plant-based diet about five weeks ago. 00:09:46.01\00:09:48.55 It's amazing because even if they had not told me 00:09:48.95\00:09:53.69 he had the diet change the first thing I noticed 00:09:53.89\00:09:56.83 was he was bringing his schoolwork in. 00:09:57.03\00:09:59.39 My teacher has actually been 00:09:59.59\00:10:03.20 bragging on how much better I've been behaving 00:10:03.40\00:10:06.23 since I've been on the diet. 00:10:06.63\00:10:08.50 In class he wasn't getting as distracted. 00:10:08.70\00:10:11.34 That he was paying attention; he was able to listen 00:10:11.54\00:10:14.18 more closely. He was being alert. 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.31 His discernment was better. 00:10:16.51\00:10:18.48 He was more diligent. Everything! 00:10:18.68\00:10:21.25 I can pay attention more. My mind is more clear 00:10:21.45\00:10:24.62 since I've been on the diet. 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.25 It's just a HUGE improvement 00:10:26.45\00:10:28.29 and I also noticed he lost a lot of weight. I mean 00:10:28.49\00:10:31.13 but the main thing I noticed was behavioral. 00:10:31.33\00:10:34.10 A study in a middle school has showed clearly 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.73 that switching the menu from animal source 00:10:38.13\00:10:41.00 to plant-sourced diet almost eliminated absenteeism, 00:10:41.20\00:10:44.74 increased and enhanced attention and the homework performance 00:10:45.91\00:10:51.85 and performance at school. 00:10:52.05\00:10:53.65 It almost eliminated acts of violence 00:10:53.85\00:10:56.99 as well as teen pregnancies. 00:10:57.19\00:10:58.92 And so they just feel better everywhere the blood flows. 00:10:59.12\00:11:02.82 Everywhere that perfect circu- lation goes they feel better... 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.73 not just in body but in mind. 00:11:05.93\00:11:08.26 Clears up their thoughts even. 00:11:08.46\00:11:10.00 And every single day since I've been on a plant-based diet 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.83 the clarity continues to increase 00:11:13.03\00:11:15.70 and my face continues to look younger 00:11:15.90\00:11:18.64 and my body feels... I feel like I look more vibrant. 00:11:18.84\00:11:22.14 I've looked at pictures of myself before and after 00:11:22.54\00:11:24.71 and I looked 5 years older - even just ten months ago - 00:11:24.91\00:11:28.12 than I do now. 00:11:28.32\00:11:29.65 What we eat does get turned into neurotransmitters. 00:11:29.75\00:11:32.89 It actually helps us or hurts us, depending on 00:11:33.09\00:11:36.76 what we're eating in regards to our brain chemistry 00:11:36.96\00:11:39.63 and it plays a vital role in health of the brain. 00:11:39.83\00:11:44.53 They'll say within 3 or 4 days 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.30 they seem to have clarity. They're alert; 00:11:46.50\00:11:50.31 they listen in class better; they absorb more; 00:11:50.51\00:11:53.64 and they do better on their tests. 00:11:53.84\00:11:55.68 The fog has been lifted out of my head. 00:11:55.88\00:11:57.41 I think clear. I've got better ideas I believe. 00:11:57.61\00:11:59.98 I can put two and two together faster 00:12:00.38\00:12:03.42 and just in general I'm happy. 00:12:03.82\00:12:06.99 In fact, diet alone... Studies show that diet 00:12:10.13\00:12:12.73 alone will reduce your depression and anxiety scores 00:12:12.93\00:12:17.10 by half just by dramatically changing your diet 00:12:17.40\00:12:21.84 to a plant-based. And so that's significant. 00:12:22.04\00:12:24.54 Now we go for more than just half 00:12:24.94\00:12:27.91 and so that's why we have a whole program that includes 00:12:28.11\00:12:30.95 more than this. But just the diet alone 00:12:31.11\00:12:33.75 can make a big difference. You don't have to choose 00:12:33.95\00:12:35.98 between high-quality living and longevity. 00:12:36.18\00:12:38.72 It's the same program... the same NEWSTART approach 00:12:38.92\00:12:42.62 to living helps you live longer and it helps you live better. 00:12:42.82\00:12:46.03 I found that information really really interesting. 00:12:48.73\00:12:52.80 I mean, there's these guys getting this food ready. 00:12:53.00\00:12:56.97 You're talking about good food 00:12:57.17\00:12:58.51 and there's these two guys who are obviously overweight. 00:12:58.67\00:13:01.38 You're talking about good food and I'm thinking 00:13:01.78\00:13:03.98 what's the connection. What was the connection? 00:13:04.18\00:13:06.18 Yeah, we became great friends with them. 00:13:06.38\00:13:07.92 So a couple young men who were coming to a class 00:13:08.12\00:13:12.65 where they were changing their diet 00:13:12.85\00:13:14.52 and we followed them around for four months. 00:13:14.72\00:13:16.56 One of them was from Hawaii. The other one was from Samoa. 00:13:16.76\00:13:20.63 And we followed them around for four months 00:13:20.83\00:13:22.60 as their blood pressure their cholesterol came down. 00:13:22.80\00:13:25.87 Also their weight came down. One of them 00:13:26.07\00:13:29.24 he even started running again. I mean, just amazing 00:13:29.44\00:13:32.57 how fast and how rapid these changes can take place 00:13:32.77\00:13:35.81 when people move from kind of more of a meat-based diet 00:13:36.01\00:13:38.91 to a plant-based diet. A junk food diet? 00:13:39.11\00:13:40.45 And so that was obviously earlier on 00:13:40.92\00:13:44.19 when they were still going through the system 00:13:44.39\00:13:46.19 so they lost a lot more weight. Yes, they ended up... 00:13:46.39\00:13:48.96 they ended up looking significantly different. 00:13:49.16\00:13:50.83 It's really a lifestyle change, isn't it? 00:13:51.03\00:13:52.59 It is. You have to adopt that. If you don't do that, 00:13:52.79\00:13:55.13 it's not going to be of benefit to you. 00:13:55.33\00:13:56.83 But you find, too, though, that you can do more. 00:13:57.03\00:13:58.77 You can start doing exercise. There are things 00:13:58.97\00:14:00.97 you used to be able to do which you CAN do again 00:14:01.17\00:14:03.84 so your lifestyle should change. 00:14:04.04\00:14:05.54 Yes, and especially after changing the diet 00:14:05.74\00:14:07.38 because what happens is, you know, we can get so large 00:14:07.58\00:14:09.71 that it's even hard to do significant amounts of exercise. 00:14:09.91\00:14:12.15 That's right. But the diet is the primary factor 00:14:12.35\00:14:14.85 even in weight loss. That's the most important factor. 00:14:15.05\00:14:17.42 Exercise is actually... it's much less of a factor 00:14:17.62\00:14:20.82 in weight loss than the diet itself. 00:14:21.02\00:14:22.66 So even people who say: "Man, I just can't 00:14:22.86\00:14:24.76 exercise" there's still hope for you 00:14:24.96\00:14:26.80 by changing the diet. Once your body starts losing 00:14:27.00\00:14:29.70 the weight your body feels better 00:14:29.90\00:14:31.23 and you're then able to exercise once again. 00:14:31.27\00:14:33.67 And also in that clip they were talking - the teacher was - 00:14:33.87\00:14:37.61 talking about his student. Do you know what his name is? 00:14:37.77\00:14:40.48 Delmar Junior. Yes. Oh, that's right, Delmar. 00:14:40.68\00:14:42.74 And she said in five weeks 00:14:43.85\00:14:47.02 there was a noticeable change 00:14:47.22\00:14:50.42 just changing his diet. Yes. 00:14:50.62\00:14:52.82 We read... we read there in the book of Daniel 00:14:53.22\00:14:57.59 in the Bible that Daniel only asked for 10 days 00:14:57.79\00:15:01.46 trial... which is nothing. 00:15:01.66\00:15:04.17 And there was a noticeable difference. They looked 00:15:05.10\00:15:07.84 healthier than the others who had spent their 10 days 00:15:08.04\00:15:10.61 eating the king's food. 00:15:10.81\00:15:12.21 But this is five weeks and there's a phenomenal change 00:15:12.41\00:15:15.44 in this young man - yes - in the school. 00:15:15.64\00:15:18.18 Actually Delmar Junior... the change came within 00:15:18.38\00:15:21.98 the five weeks. She's just saying it's been five weeks 00:15:22.18\00:15:24.79 since his change. Yes, that's true. But she was noticing 00:15:24.99\00:15:27.26 you know even right from the beginning she's just like 00:15:27.46\00:15:30.06 "Wow! Something's changing about this young man! " 00:15:30.26\00:15:32.49 You know, his behavior. And then she says eventually 00:15:32.89\00:15:35.66 they saw the weight come off. "But who cares about the weight" 00:15:35.86\00:15:38.27 she said. "It's just incredible that his behavior 00:15:38.47\00:15:40.80 has changed and he wants to be at school now. " 00:15:41.00\00:15:43.91 He's more obedient and doing his work. 00:15:44.11\00:15:47.81 A happier person obviously. 00:15:48.01\00:15:50.18 There is nothing untoward or fantastic about 00:15:50.38\00:15:53.48 you know what we're talking about in the sense 00:15:53.68\00:15:55.42 the God who made us... He made us; He formed this body. 00:15:55.62\00:15:59.45 He knows exactly how this body will function 00:15:59.65\00:16:02.42 at its best. Yeah! At its peak. 00:16:02.62\00:16:04.89 And really it's very simple. 00:16:05.09\00:16:06.96 The diet is very simple. 00:16:07.16\00:16:08.96 You don't have to spend hours in the kitchen 00:16:09.16\00:16:12.13 preparing the gourmet meals when you can have something 00:16:12.33\00:16:15.27 very simple - yes - and it will benefit you 00:16:15.47\00:16:17.87 a thousand fold. Yes! 00:16:18.07\00:16:19.41 You know, and it's interesting, too, because 00:16:19.57\00:16:21.71 so the first clinical trial or study in all of recorded history 00:16:21.91\00:16:25.91 which we just mentioned... 00:16:26.11\00:16:28.72 medical historians say Daniel chapter 1 is the oldest 00:16:28.92\00:16:31.52 scientific study in recorded history... 00:16:31.72\00:16:33.22 when replicated today finds similar results. 00:16:33.42\00:16:36.12 Which is fascinating because much of ancient "so-called" 00:16:36.32\00:16:39.06 science if you were to look at it today it would be laughable. 00:16:39.26\00:16:42.43 You know, you say: "Oh, that's just silly! " 00:16:42.63\00:16:44.73 Bleeding people because they're sick. 00:16:44.93\00:16:46.63 Yes. They think it's going to help them. Putting leaches on 00:16:46.84\00:16:49.20 or whatever. Totally. But then you look at this 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.07 and when replicated we're finding similar benefits 00:16:51.27\00:16:53.14 that people within days of changing their diet 00:16:53.34\00:16:55.84 their cognition, their mental state, begins to do better. 00:16:56.04\00:16:59.28 They feel a clearer mind. 00:16:59.48\00:17:00.98 And what we saw Dr. Nedley mention in this was that 00:17:01.18\00:17:04.22 within two weeks... So they took people from... 00:17:04.42\00:17:06.92 They were on a meat-based diet. They had three groups then. 00:17:07.12\00:17:09.86 One group stayed on the meat- based diet. One group went on 00:17:10.06\00:17:11.99 a fish and plant-based diet. 00:17:12.19\00:17:13.70 And the other one went on a total plant-based diet. 00:17:13.90\00:17:16.16 And the only one that saw the cognitive or the mental 00:17:16.36\00:17:19.20 benefit was the one who went just on the plant-based diet. 00:17:19.40\00:17:22.30 It lowers inflammation and it was within two weeks. 00:17:22.50\00:17:25.27 So within two weeks and he said the study showed 00:17:25.47\00:17:27.94 that they lowered their depres- sion by 50% within two weeks. 00:17:28.14\00:17:31.88 So this is not some long, drawn-out process 00:17:32.11\00:17:34.78 where you just have to suffer through it. No! 00:17:34.98\00:17:36.65 You can actually increase your happiness very very rapidly. 00:17:36.85\00:17:40.52 And it's interesting because this is once again 00:17:40.72\00:17:42.46 that gut/brain connection. 00:17:42.66\00:17:45.03 And not only does Daniel mention the gut/brain connection 00:17:45.23\00:17:48.46 it's mentioned multiple times in the Bible. 00:17:48.66\00:17:50.70 It says in Lamentations 1 verse 20 it says: 00:17:50.90\00:17:53.03 "Behold, O Lord, for I am in distress. 00:17:53.23\00:17:56.40 My bowels are troubled. " 00:17:56.60\00:17:59.07 You know, and it sounds kind of funny to us, right? 00:17:59.27\00:18:00.61 Oh you know: "I'm in distress; my bowels are troubled. " 00:18:00.81\00:18:02.64 But now the research is showing... and depression... 00:18:02.84\00:18:05.01 yes... in the gut. That's right. I believe that people are 00:18:05.21\00:18:08.25 actually more in tune with their bodies many times. 00:18:08.45\00:18:10.92 We've sometimes gotten away from noticing how our body 00:18:11.12\00:18:13.36 functions. But this gut/brain connection 00:18:13.56\00:18:16.52 is very very real. And one of the studies which is 00:18:16.73\00:18:19.56 an animal study, but we begin to see the ties that 00:18:19.76\00:18:22.40 lead into humans is a study on? Mice. 00:18:22.60\00:18:25.93 So Fadia, maybe you can tell us about that. 00:18:26.13\00:18:27.64 They did a study with mice and they put them on a high-fat 00:18:27.90\00:18:30.94 diet. And these mice that were put on a high-fat diet 00:18:31.14\00:18:34.68 the behaviors that they exhibited were being anxious, 00:18:34.88\00:18:39.21 repetitive behaviors, inflammation, 00:18:39.41\00:18:43.45 and impaired memory. 00:18:43.65\00:18:46.29 So they had this happening when they put them on 00:18:46.49\00:18:49.09 a high-fat diet. And they had another group 00:18:49.29\00:18:51.43 that was on a regular fat diet. 00:18:51.63\00:18:53.29 And they didn't exhibit any of these behaviors. 00:18:53.50\00:18:55.60 But what's interesting is they did this: 00:18:55.90\00:18:58.30 they took the microbes out of the guts. 00:18:58.50\00:19:00.90 They transplanted them - the bacteria - 00:19:01.10\00:19:03.51 from the high-fat diet mice 00:19:03.71\00:19:06.01 and they transplanted them into the guts of the regular fat 00:19:06.21\00:19:09.48 diet mice and guess what happens? 00:19:09.68\00:19:11.25 They changed? They changed. They exhibited the same 00:19:11.45\00:19:13.42 behaviors: the anxious behaviors, 00:19:13.62\00:19:16.25 the repetitive behaviors. And by the way, 00:19:16.45\00:19:19.89 the repetitive behaviors: when you're depressed 00:19:20.09\00:19:23.19 you typically think the same negative thing 00:19:23.39\00:19:26.29 over and over. We call it rumination. 00:19:26.49\00:19:28.46 You're thinking the same sad or negative thing 00:19:28.66\00:19:30.83 over and over and over. And it's hard to 00:19:31.03\00:19:33.54 switch that behavior off, right? Yes. 00:19:33.74\00:19:36.00 And you're seeing the gut/brain connection, right? 00:19:36.20\00:19:39.24 These mice get the bad microbes in their gut 00:19:39.44\00:19:43.21 and then they start to be anxious. 00:19:43.41\00:19:44.91 Start exhibiting the bad behavior. Right. 00:19:45.11\00:19:47.32 And then impaired memory: that has to do with your brain. 00:19:47.52\00:19:50.05 And inflammation is a marker for depression. 00:19:50.25\00:19:52.85 Right? Most people who have depression 00:19:53.05\00:19:56.52 will have inflammation in the body. 00:19:56.73\00:19:58.36 And other lifestyle diseases also exhibit inflammation 00:19:58.56\00:20:02.26 as a marker. So 00:20:02.46\00:20:04.97 those mice you see just from a transplant 00:20:05.87\00:20:09.60 of the microbes so there's something going on 00:20:09.80\00:20:12.47 with the gut bacteria that affects our behavior, 00:20:12.67\00:20:16.01 that affects the gut/brain connection. 00:20:16.21\00:20:18.71 And more and more that's being seen. 00:20:18.91\00:20:21.38 And we were told many years ago that if we eat 00:20:21.58\00:20:25.32 too frequently too much of rich, unwholesome food 00:20:25.52\00:20:30.56 it not only affects our gut but ultimately 00:20:30.76\00:20:33.50 our brains as well. 00:20:33.70\00:20:35.16 And we're told also if we want to seek 00:20:35.36\00:20:38.93 patience and self-control we'll have to give more thought 00:20:40.80\00:20:44.14 to our guts than we do. 00:20:44.34\00:20:45.97 Isn't that interesting? And science is showing that today. 00:20:46.17\00:20:49.04 Well see, just looking back at Daniel 00:20:49.24\00:20:51.21 Daniel got this experiment for 10 days. He passed... 00:20:52.48\00:20:55.42 he and his friends passed it... so they stayed on that diet. 00:20:55.62\00:20:58.29 And after a period of time... I don't know, I think it was 00:20:59.95\00:21:02.96 supposed to be three years of learning or something - 00:21:03.16\00:21:05.49 um-hmm - that they had to do before they went before the king 00:21:05.69\00:21:08.03 At the end of the first chapter of Daniel in verse 17 00:21:08.23\00:21:11.47 it talks that God had given them knowledge and skill 00:21:11.67\00:21:14.14 and understanding and learning and wisdom. 00:21:14.34\00:21:16.94 And that then they had to go before the king 00:21:17.74\00:21:19.64 to be tested. And when all of these young people 00:21:19.84\00:21:23.45 went before the king it says in verse 19 00:21:23.65\00:21:27.82 that the king did not find among any of them 00:21:28.02\00:21:30.82 anyone like Daniel and his three friends. Yes. 00:21:31.02\00:21:33.56 And in verse 20 it actually says: 00:21:33.76\00:21:36.12 "In all matters of wisdom. " This is ALL matters of wisdom 00:21:36.32\00:21:40.20 and understanding... "that the king inquired of them... " 00:21:40.40\00:21:44.13 So he tested them. 00:21:44.33\00:21:46.23 "he found Daniel and his three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, 00:21:46.43\00:21:51.17 and Abednego, ten times better than all the magicians 00:21:51.37\00:21:57.11 and astrologers that were in his realm. " 00:21:57.31\00:22:00.12 So better than everybody who were supposed to have been 00:22:00.32\00:22:03.95 understanding and having wisdom. 00:22:04.15\00:22:06.15 They were ten times better. Yes! Now that is a real 00:22:06.72\00:22:09.96 gut/brain connection. It is! It is! And then to think that 00:22:10.16\00:22:13.83 simple changes can make such a significant... In fact, 00:22:14.03\00:22:17.67 in the short run for sure meaning within ten days 00:22:17.87\00:22:21.14 but that benefit continues. That's one of the great things 00:22:21.34\00:22:23.84 about this that it can actually... It gets better! 00:22:24.04\00:22:26.27 It does! And one of the things are is we know 00:22:26.47\00:22:28.54 that people on plant-based diets have lower levels of 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.71 heart disease meaning atherosclerosis 00:22:31.91\00:22:34.05 or the plaque that fills our arteries 00:22:34.25\00:22:37.02 that actually #1 you can reverse it. 00:22:37.22\00:22:38.82 Research has shown that a plant-based diet - 00:22:39.02\00:22:40.89 a low-fat plant-based diet - can actually reverse, 00:22:41.09\00:22:43.12 take away the plaque. We used to think it was just 00:22:43.32\00:22:45.43 a progressive disease that as we get older it just happens. 00:22:45.63\00:22:49.00 Now we know you can actually through Dr. Esselstyn, 00:22:49.20\00:22:51.97 Dr. Dean Ornish. Both of them have done studies 00:22:52.17\00:22:54.14 that show it can be reversed. 00:22:54.34\00:22:55.67 But the thing is is that also things like 00:22:55.70\00:22:58.41 dementia and Alzheimer's 00:22:58.61\00:23:00.48 are diseases that one of the correlations 00:23:00.68\00:23:03.81 is the plaque within the arteries. 00:23:04.01\00:23:05.38 If the arteries in your brain, the blood vessels I should say 00:23:05.58\00:23:08.88 within your brain, as they begin to fill up... 00:23:09.08\00:23:11.59 There's more to it than that. I don't want to make it 00:23:11.79\00:23:13.69 that simple, but we can actually damage our brains. 00:23:13.89\00:23:16.66 So this can help us not only in the short term 00:23:16.86\00:23:19.06 be healthier, happier, but it can in the long run too. 00:23:19.26\00:23:22.46 So the gut/brain connection... what we put into our mouths 00:23:22.66\00:23:25.40 affects not only our gut but ultimately our mind as well 00:23:25.60\00:23:29.44 in the short term... And also our body in all sorts of 00:23:29.64\00:23:31.47 of physical ways. And I'm talking about the... 00:23:31.67\00:23:34.24 Alzheimer's and things that 00:23:34.44\00:23:39.51 then has a bit of an idea of a circulation problem - 00:23:39.91\00:23:45.05 yes - involved in it. That's right! 00:23:45.25\00:23:46.59 The brain's not getting fed properly. Yep, and 00:23:46.65\00:23:49.12 so you know we're told that perfect health 00:23:49.32\00:23:51.99 depends upon perfect circulation. 00:23:52.19\00:23:54.83 The Bible says that the life of the flesh is in the blood. 00:23:55.03\00:23:58.83 And what we eat makes... literally makes... either good 00:23:59.03\00:24:02.87 or bad blood depending on what we are digesting. 00:24:03.07\00:24:05.94 And you know, they did a particular... 00:24:06.34\00:24:08.51 there's a Scientific American periodical 00:24:08.71\00:24:12.95 that talks about the gut/brain connection. 00:24:13.15\00:24:15.18 That article talks about researchers now calling the 00:24:15.38\00:24:19.42 gut "the second brain, " but then it goes on to talk about 00:24:19.62\00:24:22.76 how having a sour stomach 00:24:22.96\00:24:26.33 can make people have sour moods. 00:24:26.53\00:24:29.50 That sounds kind of interesting but there is also a book 00:24:29.70\00:24:32.13 called Counsels on Diet & Health that tells us the very same. 00:24:32.33\00:24:34.80 It says, and this is a quote: 00:24:35.00\00:24:36.37 "People who have a sour stomach are very often 00:24:36.57\00:24:39.71 of a sour disposition, and they are inclined to be 00:24:39.91\00:24:43.08 peevish and irritable. " 00:24:43.28\00:24:44.75 It's interesting that what's going on here... 00:24:44.95\00:24:46.48 And you think often: "OK, yeah, if I have a stomach ache 00:24:46.68\00:24:48.82 that negatively impacts my mind. " 00:24:49.02\00:24:51.32 But it's not just that actually. 00:24:51.52\00:24:53.36 There can be no pain in the gut... 00:24:53.56\00:24:56.29 We have found - and we'll talk maybe more about it later - 00:24:56.49\00:24:58.99 but my wife and I, we come from a background 00:24:59.19\00:25:01.76 of arguing and these kinds of things. 00:25:01.96\00:25:03.87 And as we learned how to change our diet... 00:25:04.07\00:25:07.40 And I'm not proud about arguing. We didn't want to. 00:25:07.60\00:25:10.31 We want to be good Christians who are at peace 00:25:10.51\00:25:13.07 all the time and so forth. But as our diet changed 00:25:13.27\00:25:16.01 it actually gave us literally a peaceful marriage. 00:25:16.21\00:25:19.91 Well that's good. That's the aim, isn't it? Yes! 00:25:21.05\00:25:23.72 And so the blessing of it is... You know, you think: 00:25:23.92\00:25:26.96 "Oh, yeah, but you have to ruin your life 00:25:27.16\00:25:29.39 by eating food you don't like! 00:25:29.59\00:25:30.96 You may be happy but... " The strange thing is 00:25:31.16\00:25:33.53 as you change... At first it's a little difficult, right? I mean 00:25:33.73\00:25:37.07 any change... for instance if you don't exercise 00:25:37.27\00:25:39.27 for years and then you start exercising you get sore 00:25:39.47\00:25:41.10 and you think: "Oh, man, this is why I never exercise: 00:25:41.30\00:25:43.51 'cause you get sore. " But then when you keep it up... 00:25:43.71\00:25:45.57 "I've got muscles I didn't know I had! " Exactly! 00:25:45.77\00:25:47.38 And then over time you get used to it 00:25:47.58\00:25:50.35 and when you exercise you don't get in so much pain 00:25:50.55\00:25:52.48 and you feel better and then you enjoy how you feel. 00:25:52.68\00:25:54.92 So too with this. And they actually did a study on... 00:25:55.12\00:25:57.85 Dr. Neal Barnard did a study in the United States 00:25:58.85\00:26:01.32 and they compared a plant-based diet 00:26:01.52\00:26:03.63 taking diabetics and helping to reverse their type II diabetes. 00:26:03.83\00:26:07.40 And they put one group on a plant-based diet 00:26:07.60\00:26:09.96 and they put the other group on what is called the American 00:26:10.17\00:26:12.23 Diabetic Association diet which is a normal diet of 00:26:12.43\00:26:15.60 meat and milk, eggs, cheese, and then plant foods. 00:26:15.80\00:26:18.87 But you have to eat very little servings. You know, a little bit 00:26:19.21\00:26:21.64 of meat, a little bit of cheese, 00:26:21.94\00:26:23.28 a little bit of bread, a little bit of veggies. 00:26:23.31\00:26:24.85 And so you end your meal and you're probably not full. 00:26:25.05\00:26:27.22 Well does anybody like to finish a meal where you've not 00:26:27.42\00:26:29.68 had enough? I don't! NO! I sure don't. 00:26:29.88\00:26:32.02 We don't. But the plant-based diet: 00:26:32.22\00:26:35.32 they were told they could eat what's called at libitum ... 00:26:35.52\00:26:37.73 which means as much as you want. 00:26:37.93\00:26:39.29 They could eat till they were comfortably full 00:26:39.49\00:26:41.06 at meal time. And at the end of the study you think 00:26:41.26\00:26:44.27 "Yeah, those other people: they got meat. They must have 00:26:44.43\00:26:46.23 enjoyed it more. " Right? So they asked them: 00:26:46.43\00:26:48.54 "Did you feel restricted on the diet? " 00:26:48.74\00:26:50.94 And actually the meat-based eaters disliked their meals 00:26:51.14\00:26:54.21 better than the people who were eating the plant-based foods 00:26:54.41\00:26:57.01 because everybody wants to finish the meal 00:26:57.21\00:26:59.48 where you're comfortably full. 00:26:59.68\00:27:01.02 And yet you would still lose weight actually eating 00:27:01.05\00:27:03.42 till you're comfortably full 'cause there's less calories 00:27:03.62\00:27:05.62 in that food than there are in these heavy foods. 00:27:05.82\00:27:08.29 And so it's not as if it's a torture for the rest of your 00:27:08.49\00:27:11.39 life. You actually can begin, over time, 00:27:11.59\00:27:14.13 to learn to enjoy it more than before. 00:27:14.33\00:27:16.03 So not only does it have that cognitive benefit 00:27:16.23\00:27:18.40 reversing depression but it also is something you begin to 00:27:18.60\00:27:22.10 enjoy. And thinking about that 00:27:22.30\00:27:25.37 Fadia, maybe you could tell us a little bit about the study 00:27:25.57\00:27:28.08 on the Cesarean sections. Maybe how this impacts - OK - 00:27:28.28\00:27:32.61 the gut/brain connection. 00:27:32.81\00:27:34.22 So when the child is in the womb 00:27:34.48\00:27:37.02 they're mostly in a sterile environment, right? 00:27:37.22\00:27:40.16 And when they come through the birth canal 00:27:40.46\00:27:43.63 is when they're inoculated with the bacteria from mother. 00:27:43.83\00:27:46.53 Right? This is when they're introduced. 00:27:46.73\00:27:48.80 And you know, it's a traumatic experience. 00:27:49.00\00:27:52.33 But they are really getting as they're going through that 00:27:52.53\00:27:55.17 birth canal they're getting inoculated. 00:27:55.37\00:27:56.97 They're getting the bacteria that they need to live 00:27:57.17\00:27:59.34 outside the womb because 2/3 of your immune system 00:27:59.54\00:28:02.91 is found in your gut. 00:28:03.11\00:28:04.45 So it's very important that you have the bacteria that you need 00:28:04.85\00:28:08.42 for a healthy immune system, right? 00:28:08.62\00:28:10.55 And so that's why you need... When you come out of that 00:28:10.95\00:28:12.75 womb you need all of that bacteria coming from mother. 00:28:12.95\00:28:15.72 And what they found is children who have 00:28:16.73\00:28:20.00 had C-section babies - Cesarean section - 00:28:20.20\00:28:22.63 when they come out they don't go through the womb 00:28:23.60\00:28:25.70 and so the first thing that they're inoculated with 00:28:25.90\00:28:28.90 is the gloves of the doctor, right? 00:28:29.10\00:28:31.07 Or the hospital. Or the hospital, and Chad was 00:28:31.27\00:28:33.58 actually a C-section baby himself. 00:28:33.78\00:28:35.44 And what they're finding is... They did a long 00:28:35.64\00:28:39.75 like 35-year study of over 2 million babies. 00:28:39.95\00:28:45.49 That's a lot of people. 00:28:45.69\00:28:47.02 And what they found that statistically 00:28:47.49\00:28:50.36 that C-section babies have a higher rate of disease. 00:28:50.56\00:28:53.13 And it makes sense. High rates of allergies, 00:28:53.33\00:28:56.83 asthma, bowel disorders, rheumatism, leukemia. 00:28:57.03\00:29:00.87 So higher disease rates of... Some things are significant 00:29:01.07\00:29:04.31 like leukemia, and some are just annoying. 00:29:04.47\00:29:07.48 I mean, allergies. Well although asthma could be 00:29:07.68\00:29:09.78 worse than annoying... it could be deadly potentially. 00:29:09.98\00:29:11.98 But what is one of the factors they think why? Why does it 00:29:12.18\00:29:15.72 happen? So they think it's because... When they're doing 00:29:15.92\00:29:18.82 a study now where they're swabbing the mother 00:29:19.02\00:29:21.39 and then all the crevices and everywhere they can 00:29:21.59\00:29:26.46 they inoculate the baby so that they can get some bacteria 00:29:26.66\00:29:30.63 from the mom. And what they're finding is 00:29:30.83\00:29:32.33 that the good gut bacteria 00:29:32.53\00:29:34.97 helps you create a good microbiome 00:29:35.37\00:29:39.44 so that you can fight off diseases and things like that. 00:29:39.64\00:29:42.11 Because 2/3 of your immune system is found in your gut. 00:29:42.31\00:29:44.95 And so somehow the lack of good gut bacteria 00:29:45.15\00:29:48.55 is affecting not only mental illnesses 00:29:48.75\00:29:52.32 but then also physical ailments 00:29:52.52\00:29:55.02 like he mentioned: all the allergies and leukemia 00:29:55.22\00:29:58.59 and things like that. So it's important 00:29:58.79\00:30:02.30 that we make sure that children have good gut bacteria. 00:30:02.50\00:30:06.63 'Cause now they're finding that 00:30:06.84\00:30:09.17 children who have temper tantrums actually - toddlers, 00:30:09.37\00:30:12.54 the young children - 00:30:12.74\00:30:14.08 they're finding that they have less diversity 00:30:14.38\00:30:17.35 of good gut bacteria. Interesting! Yes. 00:30:17.55\00:30:20.48 And so if they had a better diversity of good gut bacteria 00:30:20.68\00:30:24.45 they were more social and out- going. Had less temper tantrums. 00:30:24.65\00:30:28.49 And now that we've discovered this - Chad and I - 00:30:28.69\00:30:31.76 when we see a 3-year-old come up to us and shake our hand 00:30:31.96\00:30:35.03 and say hello and talk to us like: "You've got a good gut. " 00:30:35.23\00:30:37.97 Yes! We say: "Wow! That kid's got good gut bacteria. " 00:30:38.17\00:30:40.87 It's like our new thing once we become aware of it. 00:30:42.57\00:30:45.74 And for sure, when Chad was going through the things 00:30:46.14\00:30:49.24 that he was going through he was forced because of 00:30:49.44\00:30:52.48 the work he was doing to be social 00:30:52.68\00:30:54.32 but it physically was wearing him out. 00:30:54.52\00:30:57.82 Like let's say he would speak for the day 00:30:58.02\00:30:59.95 and then socialize with people. By the end of the day 00:31:00.16\00:31:02.09 he was wiped out... he was done. Um-hmm. 00:31:02.29\00:31:04.99 Social activity was overwhelming for him. 00:31:05.39\00:31:08.10 But once he got his gut bacteria... It changed my life! 00:31:08.30\00:31:11.93 I mean, it really, really... Now it doesn't... it doesn't 00:31:12.13\00:31:15.47 tire me out to spend all day every day with people. 00:31:15.67\00:31:18.47 Meaning it literally changed, you know, reversing depression, 00:31:18.67\00:31:22.81 reversing so much of the anxiety... social anxiety. 00:31:23.01\00:31:27.12 It was just... it literally changed my life. 00:31:27.32\00:31:28.92 It's like being almost a new person. Right, and he used to 00:31:29.12\00:31:30.95 call himself an introvert and then realize: "Wow! 00:31:31.15\00:31:34.42 it was mostly due to my gut that I was an introvert. " 00:31:34.62\00:31:37.29 I don't feel that way anymore. 00:31:37.49\00:31:39.09 It's been such a... I would have never known 00:31:39.29\00:31:41.83 that it could make such a significant impact 00:31:42.03\00:31:44.20 unless I had gone through it myself. 00:31:44.40\00:31:46.17 And he used to also identify himself as having 00:31:46.37\00:31:49.54 and addictive behavior. Right? Addictive personality. 00:31:49.74\00:31:52.97 You know, people like: I had been a heavy drinker, 00:31:53.17\00:31:55.68 smoker, and so forth and there were certain things 00:31:55.88\00:31:58.51 I never tried because I thought: "I don't want to 00:31:58.71\00:32:00.45 because I know whatever I do I'm prone to get addicted to. " 00:32:00.65\00:32:03.22 You know, this is before giving my life to the Lord. 00:32:03.42\00:32:05.05 And... But even after giving my life to the Lord 00:32:05.45\00:32:07.62 I still felt like I had an addictive personality 00:32:07.82\00:32:10.66 until the changes that took place in the gut 00:32:11.06\00:32:14.23 actually began to really change my mental health too. Yeah. 00:32:14.43\00:32:18.33 That's amazing! It really is. 00:32:18.53\00:32:20.37 One of the things I was just thinking about 00:32:20.77\00:32:23.00 was so they... Fadia mentioned that even children 00:32:23.20\00:32:26.37 with less diversity of gut bacteria 00:32:26.57\00:32:28.68 are more cranky, more social, have more temper tantrums. 00:32:29.08\00:32:32.68 Antisocial. Antisocial. 00:32:32.88\00:32:34.72 And the children who have a greater diversity 00:32:34.92\00:32:36.28 of gut bacteria are more social, more outgoing. 00:32:36.48\00:32:39.62 And so the question is: "Well how can we get 00:32:39.82\00:32:42.02 a greater diversity of gut bacteria? " 00:32:42.22\00:32:44.36 I've just got a little comment I want to make if you don't mind. 00:32:44.56\00:32:47.93 The impact on children 00:32:48.76\00:32:52.70 if they've been on medications 00:32:53.84\00:32:56.37 to their gut bacteria? Yes. 00:32:56.57\00:32:58.81 Has there been anything researched on that? 00:32:59.01\00:33:02.54 And also when I've read about the gut bacteria 00:33:02.74\00:33:06.72 people often know them as probiotics. Yep, yep. 00:33:06.92\00:33:10.52 That there are different probiotics for different parts 00:33:11.69\00:33:15.36 of your health and there are certain ones 00:33:15.56\00:33:18.49 that are very good for depression. Others are good for 00:33:18.69\00:33:21.73 anxiety and stress. 00:33:21.93\00:33:23.97 There are some that are very good for building your 00:33:24.17\00:33:26.67 immune system. Some actually lower your LDL. 00:33:26.87\00:33:30.31 Some are good for metabolizing fat. 00:33:30.71\00:33:33.64 And all these different things. They're finding out 00:33:34.04\00:33:36.01 all the different microbes have a different job within the body 00:33:36.21\00:33:38.98 to keep you well. But anyway... medication? 00:33:39.18\00:33:42.18 So the medication... they have done a study 00:33:42.38\00:33:44.42 specifically in Israel looking at... I love scientific studies. 00:33:44.62\00:33:48.46 And Israel's great for doing medical research. 00:33:48.66\00:33:50.76 Yes, I believe so. 00:33:50.96\00:33:53.36 Long story short: so they did one study 00:33:53.56\00:33:56.13 on antibiotics specifically. 00:33:56.33\00:33:58.03 And antibiotics - antibiotics - just the word - 00:33:58.23\00:34:01.87 it basically means anti. They're killing something, right? 00:34:02.24\00:34:05.14 And they kill bacteria specifically. 00:34:05.54\00:34:07.91 And once again so as they... We know 00:34:08.31\00:34:11.95 the research shows that as it kills bacteria 00:34:12.15\00:34:14.35 it changes the bacterial make-up of your body 00:34:14.55\00:34:18.19 and your gut specifically. 00:34:18.39\00:34:20.16 And so what they found is that for every round 00:34:20.36\00:34:22.12 of antibiotics - and what I mean by round is for every bottle 00:34:22.32\00:34:25.66 that your doctor says: "Take these till they're done" 00:34:25.86\00:34:27.70 that's a round, prescription, 00:34:27.90\00:34:29.56 it increases your chances of depression by about 25%. 00:34:29.76\00:34:33.67 And for every 2 to 5 rounds 00:34:33.87\00:34:36.00 it increases your chances of depression by about 50%. 00:34:36.20\00:34:38.94 So we're not telling people they can never have antibiotics 00:34:39.14\00:34:43.01 but sometimes - and the medical institutions know 00:34:43.21\00:34:45.85 that they're being overprescribed in some cases. 00:34:46.05\00:34:48.48 For... someone may have a viral infection and 00:34:48.68\00:34:50.95 antibiotics don't do anything for virus. They kill bacteria. 00:34:51.15\00:34:54.39 And so people are maybe overusing them. 00:34:54.59\00:34:56.46 And so you could be negatively impacting your mental health. 00:34:56.66\00:34:59.76 And that's what actually happened with me. 00:34:59.96\00:35:01.36 Ultimately I had gut trouble. So did my wife 00:35:02.36\00:35:06.13 and so did another person. We were living in a foreign nation 00:35:06.33\00:35:09.17 and I won't even say where it was. 00:35:09.37\00:35:10.71 So you were trying to get good food. Yes! And there it was 00:35:10.91\00:35:14.34 actually the water. We drank bad water 00:35:14.54\00:35:16.21 and we had two years of stomach trouble. 00:35:16.41\00:35:18.38 And so it was long, drawn-out. Went through depression. 00:35:18.58\00:35:22.05 Went through 8 years of seasonal depression 00:35:22.25\00:35:24.82 and then I got bit by a tick and took some antibiotics. 00:35:25.02\00:35:29.66 A doctor friend said: "Oh, you should take these 00:35:29.86\00:35:31.36 just to make sure you don't get Lyme disease. " 00:35:31.56\00:35:33.13 I took it, and then I went into year-round depression. 00:35:33.33\00:35:35.66 And then the next year I got bit by another tick. 00:35:36.06\00:35:38.67 Took more antibiotics. Continued the year-round depression. 00:35:38.87\00:35:41.50 And I didn't know back then. I didn't know all... 00:35:41.70\00:35:43.84 I didn't know the connections and I didn't realize 00:35:44.04\00:35:45.71 that my depression had stemmed initially from the gut issue 00:35:45.91\00:35:48.94 and it would continue. And then I would have seasonal 00:35:49.14\00:35:51.48 depression. In the Northern Hemisphere 00:35:51.68\00:35:54.12 you get dark in the winter and that's common. 00:35:54.32\00:35:56.48 You get depression. But long story short 00:35:56.69\00:35:59.05 as I began... as my diet began to change 00:36:00.12\00:36:04.13 it began to reverse the depression. 00:36:04.33\00:36:07.10 And once again they said on the video two weeks, right? 00:36:07.30\00:36:09.73 That's exactly what happened in my life. 00:36:09.93\00:36:11.27 I noticed about two weeks into changing my diet... 00:36:11.43\00:36:14.80 I actually saw... actually heard a quotation 00:36:15.00\00:36:18.07 from a little old lady named Ellen White 00:36:18.27\00:36:21.21 and she had mentioned this. She mentions multiple things. 00:36:21.41\00:36:25.41 She talks about if people are depressed or they're anxious 00:36:25.61\00:36:27.68 she talks about adding more fruit to the diet. 00:36:27.88\00:36:30.09 Many people are afraid of fruit. They think it has sugar. 00:36:30.92\00:36:32.69 Strangely enough, when the British Medical Journal 00:36:32.89\00:36:34.52 studied various fruits it shows that almost 00:36:34.72\00:36:36.59 every single kind of fruit lowers your chances of diabetes. 00:36:36.79\00:36:39.13 Does not increase it. 00:36:39.33\00:36:40.66 God made it in the right package. 00:36:40.70\00:36:42.60 Yeah... it's processed sugar that... 00:36:42.80\00:36:45.47 It's when you process it it's that when the change 00:36:45.70\00:36:47.27 takes place. When you remove the fiber from the food 00:36:47.47\00:36:50.04 you increase the concentration of the sugars 00:36:50.24\00:36:52.67 or oils or proteins. 00:36:52.87\00:36:55.61 But you need the fiber within your food for 00:36:55.81\00:36:58.15 the body to utilize it the best. 00:36:58.35\00:37:00.85 Yeah, now Chad, you mentioned you changed your diet. 00:37:01.05\00:37:03.22 I know there'll be a lot of people thinking out there 00:37:03.42\00:37:05.12 "Well what did you do? " Yes! 00:37:05.32\00:37:06.65 What was it exactly? Yes... finish the story. 00:37:06.86\00:37:09.32 I want to hear what happened. So what happened with me 00:37:09.52\00:37:11.43 and I do not suggest people do exactly what I did. 00:37:11.63\00:37:14.30 What I did was a bit extreme. 00:37:14.50\00:37:15.83 It was short-term... I didn't do it forever. 00:37:15.86\00:37:17.20 But I... There is a quotation talking about 00:37:17.57\00:37:21.07 we are coming to the time when recipes for cooking 00:37:21.27\00:37:23.54 will not be needed for God's people will learn 00:37:23.74\00:37:27.51 that "the food God gave Adam in his sinless state 00:37:27.71\00:37:30.21 is the best for keeping the body in a sinless state. " 00:37:30.41\00:37:33.55 That's a quote. And I heard that. 00:37:33.75\00:37:35.35 And I thought: "Well that's strange. The food God gave 00:37:35.55\00:37:36.89 Adam. " And so I thought: "Well, that would probably 00:37:36.99\00:37:39.69 be a lot of fruit, right? So I did something a little 00:37:39.89\00:37:41.69 extreme that I don't suggest everybody do. 00:37:41.89\00:37:43.53 But I literally ate fruit for two weeks 00:37:43.73\00:37:45.96 and two weeks into it my depression began to go away. 00:37:46.16\00:37:49.83 And I noticed I could control... Instead of going over 00:37:50.03\00:37:52.13 and over and over the same guilty, depressed... 00:37:52.33\00:37:56.00 I was trying to make my heart right with God. 00:37:56.20\00:37:57.57 I literally would confess... meaning if I had said something 00:37:57.77\00:38:00.58 about you: "Oh sister, I'm sorry for what I said. " 00:38:00.78\00:38:02.41 I literally was trying to make my heart right. 00:38:02.61\00:38:04.25 I gave thousands of dollars away to try to make right 00:38:04.45\00:38:06.65 some wrong from the past and doing anything I could... 00:38:06.85\00:38:09.62 but nothing would give any peace. 00:38:09.82\00:38:11.32 And he kept thinking it was a spiritual problem. 00:38:11.52\00:38:14.12 It was a spiritual problem and trying to fix that. 00:38:14.32\00:38:16.32 And I mean he was being faith- ful. He was doing everything 00:38:16.52\00:38:19.46 right. He was even living a healthy lifestyle 00:38:19.66\00:38:22.60 compared to what he had in the past. Yes. 00:38:23.00\00:38:25.43 And yet still... Exercising every day. 00:38:25.63\00:38:28.37 Getting out in the sunlight. Drinking adequate amounts 00:38:28.57\00:38:30.47 of water... I was doing all those things. 00:38:30.67\00:38:32.01 But as I began to change my diet within two weeks 00:38:32.07\00:38:34.98 the changes began to take place. 00:38:35.18\00:38:36.68 And here's the thing... So the question is: 00:38:36.88\00:38:38.58 "Why? Why did it work? " 00:38:38.78\00:38:40.12 So I began to eat this for two weeks 00:38:40.15\00:38:41.68 and the depression began to go away. 00:38:41.88\00:38:43.72 And I still eat a lot of fruit. I don't just eat fruit. 00:38:43.92\00:38:45.45 I eat fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, 00:38:45.65\00:38:47.66 all of these things today. 00:38:47.86\00:38:49.32 So I eat a diversity of plant-based foods. 00:38:49.52\00:38:51.59 And so as I get... We suggest that people... 00:38:51.99\00:38:55.36 There's a quotation also in Counsels on Diets & Foods 00:38:55.56\00:38:58.27 where it says: "In many cases of sickness 00:38:58.47\00:39:00.14 the very best remedy is for the patient to fast 00:39:00.34\00:39:02.80 for a meal or two. " Not a week or two. 00:39:03.00\00:39:04.84 A meal or two. One day of a meal or two. 00:39:05.04\00:39:07.48 "that the overworked organs of digestion may have 00:39:07.68\00:39:09.81 an opportunity to rest. " 00:39:10.01\00:39:11.35 And then it says: "And then a fruit diet 00:39:11.48\00:39:14.48 for a few days. " 00:39:14.68\00:39:16.45 I don't know two, three, four... it's up to you. 00:39:16.65\00:39:18.55 You know, no pressure. 00:39:18.75\00:39:20.09 "A fruit diet for a few days has often brought great relief 00:39:20.12\00:39:22.19 to brain workers. " And then it says: 00:39:22.39\00:39:24.43 "and abstemious, or a simple diet, for a couple of months... 00:39:24.63\00:39:28.53 for a month or two has often brought great relief 00:39:28.73\00:39:32.10 to brain workers. " And so we suggest 00:39:32.30\00:39:34.80 that people do it as long as I did. 00:39:35.00\00:39:36.40 It was quite extreme, but if they do something 00:39:36.60\00:39:39.41 very simple... Let your gut rest. 00:39:39.61\00:39:41.18 Eat fruit for a few days. 00:39:41.38\00:39:43.48 And you can eat plenty at your meals and then begin to add 00:39:43.68\00:39:46.21 back the grains if you don't have celiac 00:39:46.41\00:39:49.72 disease you can have wheat. Vegetables. Exactly. 00:39:49.92\00:39:52.15 And the vegetables and the nuts and so forth. 00:39:52.35\00:39:54.52 And so the question is: "Why did it work though? " 00:39:54.82\00:39:57.33 I mean, OK, I did it but what research has shown 00:39:57.53\00:40:00.33 is there's something called the Bulgarian Journal of Plant 00:40:00.53\00:40:02.73 Physiology, and what they found 00:40:02.93\00:40:04.67 was that there's animal neurotransmitter substances 00:40:04.87\00:40:08.90 found in plants. We can make it simple and say 00:40:09.10\00:40:11.67 "Brain chemicals are found in plants. " 00:40:11.87\00:40:14.71 So the good chemicals you need for your health 00:40:15.11\00:40:17.98 and happiness are actually found in plants. 00:40:18.18\00:40:20.02 So as you eat the plants you get that. 00:40:20.22\00:40:21.85 There's a secondary issue when it comes to bacteria, right? 00:40:22.05\00:40:25.22 So what they found is an apple 00:40:25.42\00:40:27.52 has its own bacterial make-up: various different microbes 00:40:27.72\00:40:30.79 on the apple. Then you take a pear, 00:40:30.99\00:40:32.96 and a pear may have some similar but it will have different 00:40:33.16\00:40:35.26 bacteria from the apple. 00:40:35.46\00:40:36.80 And if you go into a plum you'll find different there. 00:40:36.83\00:40:39.40 And a potato or a sweet potato... 00:40:39.60\00:40:41.47 A variety? So variety. So if you just eat one 00:40:41.67\00:40:43.77 you only get the bacterial make-up there, 00:40:43.97\00:40:45.67 but if you eat a diversity of plant-based foods 00:40:45.87\00:40:49.11 what it does is it feeds what's called the microbiome: 00:40:49.31\00:40:52.18 the bacteria within our guts. 00:40:52.38\00:40:54.38 And as we eat that it increases the amount of... 00:40:54.58\00:40:57.12 of good bacteria. And one of the things that it does 00:40:57.32\00:41:00.52 is it lowers inflammation in the body. 00:41:00.72\00:41:03.22 And depression is actually often an inflammatory disease. 00:41:03.43\00:41:08.16 We have inflammation with the body, 00:41:08.36\00:41:09.73 achy joints, and various health issues with it. 00:41:09.93\00:41:13.54 So doing this you get the greater diversity. 00:41:13.74\00:41:16.54 So the two ways that people get gut bacteria... 00:41:16.74\00:41:19.14 two of the ways I should say... there's actually more 00:41:19.34\00:41:21.28 but two of the ways they get it are number one: 00:41:21.48\00:41:23.61 from a diversity of plant-based foods. 00:41:23.81\00:41:25.25 And that's the safest way to get it. 00:41:25.45\00:41:26.98 That's the safest way. The other option is 00:41:27.18\00:41:29.05 taking the probiotics. At least one study has found 00:41:29.25\00:41:33.39 there's a potential danger, and so what's best is if you 00:41:33.59\00:41:36.62 can get it once again in the whole form. 00:41:36.83\00:41:38.19 But if somebody really needs to, there can be cases 00:41:38.39\00:41:40.96 to also take it in a pill-type form 00:41:41.16\00:41:43.40 where they have various strains of bacteria 00:41:43.60\00:41:46.27 that can help you potentially digest better 00:41:46.47\00:41:48.84 and these kinds of things. And so 00:41:49.04\00:41:50.77 it goes back to what the Bible says in Genesis. 00:41:51.17\00:41:53.84 You know, the Bible says in Genesis chapter 1:29 it says: 00:41:54.24\00:41:57.08 "And God said: 'Behold, I have given you 00:41:57.28\00:41:59.11 every herb bearing seed which is on the face of all the earth 00:41:59.31\00:42:02.25 and every tree in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding 00:42:02.45\00:42:06.02 seed. To you it shall be for food. ' " 00:42:06.22\00:42:09.02 Right? Meaning God gave these plant-based foods. 00:42:09.22\00:42:12.06 And it was in the Garden of? Eden. Eden, right? 00:42:12.26\00:42:14.63 The word in the Hebrew means pleasure. 00:42:14.83\00:42:16.93 So it was the garden of pleasure. 00:42:17.13\00:42:18.53 So their home was to bring them happiness. 00:42:18.73\00:42:20.64 The work they did was to bring them happiness. 00:42:20.84\00:42:23.20 But even their food was to bring pleasure. 00:42:23.41\00:42:25.44 So if you were thinking from a Biblical standpoint 00:42:25.64\00:42:27.78 you'd think: "That would probably mean that the food 00:42:27.98\00:42:30.15 God gave Adam and Eve 00:42:30.35\00:42:32.01 would bring about the highest levels of pleasure in life. " 00:42:32.21\00:42:35.25 And this is what research now shows us. 00:42:35.45\00:42:38.52 And when it talks about the tree with the 00:42:38.72\00:42:41.69 seed bearing fruit, well that means... that's what we 00:42:41.89\00:42:45.49 think of as fruit today: 00:42:45.69\00:42:47.20 the thing that's got the seed in it - yes - 00:42:47.40\00:42:49.43 Inside - that's right - or you know like strawberries... 00:42:49.63\00:42:53.40 they've got the seed around them. Right. 00:42:53.60\00:42:55.24 But it's the same thing... it's the seed is there. 00:42:55.44\00:42:57.37 Yes. Whereas vegetables don't have 00:42:57.57\00:43:00.01 the seed in them. That's right; that's right. 00:43:00.21\00:43:02.18 So there's things that we would typically standardly 00:43:02.38\00:43:04.55 in a standard way we would think certain things are vegetables. 00:43:04.75\00:43:07.35 We eat them like a vegetable. Like a tomato. 00:43:07.55\00:43:08.88 Yeah, because it's not real sweet compared to you know 00:43:08.92\00:43:11.92 a pear. And you don't have them for dessert normally. 00:43:12.12\00:43:14.06 I like the thought of diversity of all this fruit. Yes! 00:43:14.26\00:43:17.99 So if you live in different parts of the world 00:43:18.19\00:43:20.16 you discover different fruits. 00:43:20.36\00:43:21.73 And one of those is durian and I LOVE durian. 00:43:21.93\00:43:24.27 I do too! Oh, wonderful! Wow! 00:43:24.47\00:43:26.27 No... not here, no. 00:43:26.47\00:43:28.60 Got those mango seeds and all those things. 00:43:28.80\00:43:30.51 How could you improve on that really in your kitchen 00:43:30.71\00:43:34.58 to be able to get a mango, you know? 00:43:34.78\00:43:37.05 There's a mango in Thailand called nam doc mai 00:43:37.25\00:43:39.55 which means nectar of flower. 00:43:39.75\00:43:41.45 When you slice that it just dissolves in your mouth. Oh! 00:43:41.65\00:43:44.79 How can you make anything like that? 00:43:44.99\00:43:46.49 And the custard apples in Thailand and the pears... 00:43:46.69\00:43:48.52 The thing is you think of all this diversity 00:43:48.72\00:43:51.03 in the food that God gave to bring pleasure 00:43:51.23\00:43:54.46 it's not some bitter root that nobody likes. 00:43:54.66\00:43:57.10 No! It's the food that we all naturally like 00:43:57.30\00:44:00.14 but maybe just don't eat enough of, right? 00:44:00.34\00:44:01.70 And we wish we had the trees in our garden! Yes! 00:44:01.90\00:44:03.41 Right! And so that's some of the... like even in Australia 00:44:03.61\00:44:06.98 the University of Queensland did a study 00:44:07.18\00:44:09.38 and they titled an article on it that 00:44:09.58\00:44:11.51 fruit is a depression buster for women. 00:44:11.71\00:44:14.12 Meaning what they found is women who consume more 00:44:14.32\00:44:16.42 fruit have lower levels of depression. 00:44:16.62\00:44:18.75 So we don't have to worry so much about the sugar in it - 00:44:18.95\00:44:21.46 especially if we're not diabetic or whatever - but 00:44:21.66\00:44:23.56 in general even if we are diabetic it lowers level 00:44:23.83\00:44:26.33 of diabetes but it brings happiness along with it 00:44:26.53\00:44:29.63 and that's one of the great blessings. 00:44:29.83\00:44:31.27 That is... it's true. So going back to medication - 00:44:31.47\00:44:34.00 um-hmm - because I've had a lot of different 00:44:34.20\00:44:37.51 antibiotics through my life for different reasons. 00:44:37.71\00:44:40.44 And some people have had to have stronger drugs - 00:44:41.71\00:44:44.25 yes - for... a lot of it is acute. Yes. 00:44:44.41\00:44:47.85 There's nothing you can do. I mean, like I had my appendix 00:44:48.05\00:44:50.15 rupture. I needed to have two types of antibiotics 00:44:50.35\00:44:53.19 for that to keep me from peritonitis. Yes. 00:44:53.39\00:44:55.39 And so sometimes it's not some- thing you can do anything about. 00:44:55.59\00:44:58.89 It's not that you've got a predisposition 00:44:59.09\00:45:01.26 with a health problem - yes - that you've gotta take 00:45:01.46\00:45:03.60 medication for you diabetes, your high blood pressure, 00:45:03.80\00:45:05.90 whatever. It can be an acute situation 00:45:06.10\00:45:09.24 and so you've gotta take medication. But any medication 00:45:09.64\00:45:12.74 really can mess up your gut. Yeah, it's true. 00:45:12.94\00:45:15.38 And so you've really got to get into something 00:45:15.58\00:45:17.61 I would say probably do something radical 00:45:17.81\00:45:21.62 in some cases - that's right - to try and get your gut 00:45:21.82\00:45:24.72 functioning properly again because of the effects 00:45:24.92\00:45:28.19 that will be long term let alone short term with medication. 00:45:28.39\00:45:31.76 And so options are potential things like you mentioned 00:45:31.96\00:45:34.46 probiotics. Another is yogurt... which 00:45:34.66\00:45:38.07 you can even buy plant-based yogurt if you would like to 00:45:38.27\00:45:40.90 do that where they have strains of bacteria in there. 00:45:41.10\00:45:43.97 And once again, eating and maybe even eating simple 00:45:44.17\00:45:47.08 for a while: maybe more of the fresh fruit 00:45:47.28\00:45:49.68 and these things so you can get that diversity of gut bacteria. 00:45:49.88\00:45:52.55 And you know, it changed my life as I did it. 00:45:53.05\00:45:56.08 My depression went away; social anxiety went away. 00:45:56.28\00:45:59.25 My joint pain went away; migraines went away. 00:45:59.45\00:46:02.22 I mean I could just go on and on literally. 00:46:02.42\00:46:03.99 I mean it's almost unbelievable how much it changed. 00:46:04.19\00:46:07.00 But they did something in the United States in a prison. 00:46:07.43\00:46:11.87 There was a SDA business- man who started a prison. 00:46:12.07\00:46:14.64 And he got a contract with the government of California 00:46:14.84\00:46:18.57 called the CDC: the California Department of Corrections. 00:46:18.77\00:46:21.48 And what they did was he decided they would make 00:46:21.68\00:46:24.25 two sides to the prison. He's a multi-millionaire 00:46:24.41\00:46:27.08 successful man but he wanted to actually help these people. 00:46:27.28\00:46:29.48 So one side of the prison would be on a plant-based diet, 00:46:29.68\00:46:32.49 no animal foods, and the other side would be a meat-based side. 00:46:32.69\00:46:36.16 And so they gave the people the opportunity to choose 00:46:36.36\00:46:39.69 which side they would go on. And one of the government workers 00:46:39.89\00:46:41.80 said: "No way... no way! 00:46:42.00\00:46:44.03 These guys would rather burn the place to the ground 00:46:44.23\00:46:47.07 than become vegan. " 00:46:47.27\00:46:49.80 But they gave them the opportunity 00:46:50.01\00:46:52.07 because as Adventists we don't believe that people force people 00:46:52.27\00:46:55.08 to... You shouldn't force people to follow God. 00:46:55.28\00:46:57.65 You shouldn't force people to eat healthy. 00:46:57.85\00:46:59.28 God gives us choice, and that's all throughout Scripture. 00:46:59.48\00:47:02.08 "Choose you this day, " right? It's not about force. 00:47:02.28\00:47:05.32 And I don't think anybody should be forced into this. 00:47:05.52\00:47:07.22 It should be willingly. So they gave them the choice. 00:47:07.42\00:47:09.99 And you imagine well what percentage of these gangbangers, 00:47:10.19\00:47:12.93 these thugs, these hardened criminals 00:47:13.13\00:47:15.50 would choose willingly to go vegan? 00:47:15.70\00:47:17.73 So what do you think? What percentage do you think? 00:47:17.93\00:47:19.90 Not very high. I think a lot! 00:47:20.10\00:47:21.44 One says not many, one says... I think a lot. 00:47:21.50\00:47:23.87 85% of them chose to go vegan. 00:47:24.07\00:47:26.24 Yeah, that's what I thought! Isn't that amazing? 00:47:26.44\00:47:28.08 And my thought is: "Well gang members, thugs, 00:47:28.28\00:47:31.11 they're not afraid of looking different. " 00:47:31.31\00:47:33.42 So they're like: "I don't care what people think about me. 00:47:33.62\00:47:35.38 I'll do it. " And so they chose to do it 00:47:35.58\00:47:37.15 'cause they thought: "Well maybe it will help me. " 00:47:37.42\00:47:38.99 Listen to what happened. So this prison 00:47:39.19\00:47:41.62 as it was running at that time in California 00:47:41.82\00:47:45.43 the recidivism rate... which recidivism is the statistical 00:47:45.83\00:47:49.53 rate at which if you go to prison one time 00:47:49.73\00:47:51.53 when you get out of prison what's the statistical rate 00:47:51.73\00:47:54.57 at which you will commit another crime and go back to prison. 00:47:54.77\00:47:56.91 Well at that time... So while this SDA businessman 00:47:57.31\00:48:01.14 was running this prison the rate as they went on a total 00:48:01.34\00:48:04.25 plant-based diet... There were also Bible studies 00:48:04.45\00:48:06.48 and other things, but all prisons in America have Bible 00:48:06.68\00:48:08.92 studies. You have the opportunity for it anyway. 00:48:09.12\00:48:12.09 And so in this prison the recidivism rate 00:48:12.29\00:48:14.76 at that time in California was 95%. 00:48:14.96\00:48:17.19 Meaning if you went to prison once there was a 95% chance - 00:48:17.39\00:48:20.50 that's high! when you got out you'd commit 00:48:20.70\00:48:22.23 a crime again and go back. Another felony! 00:48:22.43\00:48:23.77 So that's not very much of a correctional facility! 00:48:23.93\00:48:26.94 You know how we call our prisons correctional facilities. 00:48:27.14\00:48:29.57 They're just like hotels! Yeah, exactly. 00:48:29.77\00:48:32.31 Or teaching you how to be a criminal even more, right? 00:48:32.51\00:48:35.14 Yes. And so the recidivism rate 00:48:35.34\00:48:38.08 dropped from 95% to 2%. You're kidding! Two percent. 00:48:38.28\00:48:44.09 In that prison. In that prison, and so 00:48:44.29\00:48:46.39 other prisons began to be interested in California. 00:48:46.59\00:48:48.79 So the idea began to spread; people wanted to know about... 00:48:48.99\00:48:52.36 more about it. And so what ended up happening 00:48:52.56\00:48:54.63 we were told by one of the people that was working there - 00:48:54.83\00:48:57.30 we interviewed him - and what happened was 00:48:57.50\00:49:00.37 they realized if this continued they could potentially shut down 00:49:00.57\00:49:04.21 90% of the prisons in California. Oh my! 00:49:04.41\00:49:06.07 Wouldn't that be incredible? People would be out of a job! 00:49:06.51\00:49:07.84 So you know what they did? They shut this prison down 00:49:08.24\00:49:11.91 because prisons are big business 00:49:12.65\00:49:15.32 and you can't allow... You need repeat customers 00:49:15.52\00:49:18.19 for good business, right? That's right. And so this place 00:49:18.39\00:49:21.16 ended up being shut down. It's absolutely sad because 00:49:21.39\00:49:25.96 you think: this could have changed the world. 00:49:26.16\00:49:27.56 I mean, America has the highest incarceration rate 00:49:27.76\00:49:29.60 on the planet. And so back to the point 00:49:29.80\00:49:33.44 of what are we talking about. The gut/brain connection. 00:49:33.64\00:49:35.47 Now could it be... and we're actually told... 00:49:35.67\00:49:38.84 we're told in one of these old books once again 00:49:39.04\00:49:41.98 we're told that one of the great reasons for crime 00:49:42.18\00:49:46.08 and wretchedness in our world today is what? 00:49:46.28\00:49:50.29 Our stomachs. How we eat. 00:49:50.49\00:49:53.42 Intemperance in diet. And this is exactly what we see. 00:49:53.62\00:49:56.96 When you change the diet of these criminals 00:49:57.16\00:49:58.73 they become upstanding citizens. 00:49:58.93\00:50:00.70 You think: "Could it be? Could the gut/brain connection? " 00:50:01.10\00:50:03.37 And there's more to it. There's so many more things 00:50:03.57\00:50:05.40 we could share, but obviously... They had the opportunity 00:50:05.60\00:50:07.90 for Bible studies, to learn about God. That's right. 00:50:08.10\00:50:09.80 To change their lives - yeah - exercise 00:50:10.01\00:50:12.77 through God as well as through their diet. 00:50:12.97\00:50:14.98 It's interesting Chad and Fadia, when you go into a supermarket 00:50:15.18\00:50:18.15 store what's there at the front? It's always there at the front? 00:50:18.35\00:50:22.25 The closest thing to the checkout is all those foods 00:50:22.45\00:50:25.82 that are not really good for your gut. Yes. 00:50:26.02\00:50:30.06 Refined junk foods. That's right. Yes. 00:50:30.26\00:50:32.83 And many of them are plant-based, but once again 00:50:33.03\00:50:35.26 they're refined. Highly processed. That's right. 00:50:35.46\00:50:37.73 The plant in its whole form has the great beneficial 00:50:37.93\00:50:40.67 health effects, but once you take away the fiber, 00:50:40.87\00:50:43.57 you take away protein, you take away the healthy fat 00:50:43.77\00:50:46.44 and you just have junk basically. 00:50:46.64\00:50:48.24 You know it's very interesting. We did a program 00:50:48.44\00:50:50.98 here and it's available at 3ABN in the online store 00:50:51.18\00:50:55.68 where you can go to a store and buy food 00:50:55.88\00:50:59.19 and it's very interesting. If you want to save 00:50:59.39\00:51:01.16 your grocery bill by something like $2,000 a year 00:51:01.36\00:51:05.16 when you weigh up just taking vegetables and those 00:51:05.36\00:51:08.93 foods that are processed - junk foods - well, you can call 00:51:09.13\00:51:11.97 it processed foods, the weight, what you can live on 00:51:12.17\00:51:16.07 for the weight of vegetables and fruits 00:51:16.27\00:51:18.97 exceeds this a hundred times. Wow! Wow! Incredible! 00:51:19.17\00:51:23.21 It's really really incredible! Saves you a lot of money. 00:51:23.41\00:51:25.45 I'm just going to take a break right now, 00:51:25.65\00:51:27.28 and we're going to look at the address roll for you 00:51:27.48\00:51:32.09 because we're talking with Chad and Fadia Kreuzer 00:51:32.29\00:51:36.29 and they run Anchor Point Films. 00:51:36.49\00:51:39.36 And they have lots of things available there on their website 00:51:39.56\00:51:44.23 including DVDs about the gut/brain connection. 00:51:44.43\00:51:48.40 And so I want to give you the opportunity to write down 00:51:49.10\00:51:51.97 their details and get in touch with them to come and talk. 00:51:52.17\00:51:55.98 To have a look at their website 00:51:56.38\00:51:59.11 so that you can find out what they have there 00:51:59.31\00:52:02.08 in store for you that you can get hold of to help yourself 00:52:02.28\00:52:05.82 and people you know. Here's their details: 00:52:06.02\00:52:08.02 Contact them today. 00:52:50.33\00:52:52.73 I hope you wrote that down because they've got some 00:52:54.90\00:52:57.04 very very good things for you to help your life 00:52:57.24\00:53:00.34 and those you know. 00:53:00.54\00:53:01.88 Now Chad, we want to know where do we start with all of this? 00:53:02.18\00:53:06.75 A great question. Two studies have been conducted: 00:53:06.95\00:53:09.12 one in Britain, one in the United States 00:53:09.32\00:53:10.92 on looking at the quantity of plant-based foods eaten 00:53:11.12\00:53:15.06 meaning how many servings a day of fruits and vegetables. 00:53:15.26\00:53:17.69 And what they found is that for every serving of fruit 00:53:18.09\00:53:22.10 or vegetable that you eat in a day 00:53:22.83\00:53:24.17 the chart shows if you eat zero in a day you're statistically 00:53:24.20\00:53:26.80 at your lowest level of happiness. 00:53:27.00\00:53:28.90 Hmm. But if you eat one it makes a tiny difference. 00:53:29.10\00:53:31.37 If you eat two there's ac- tually a statistical difference 00:53:31.57\00:53:34.94 and it continues to go up until you eat eight pieces 00:53:35.14\00:53:37.61 of fruit or vegetables... servings of fruit or vegetables 00:53:37.81\00:53:41.32 I should say. In a day? You can choose, and what they 00:53:41.52\00:53:44.32 found was that it will not only tell how happy you'll be today 00:53:44.52\00:53:48.02 but it will forecast how happy you'll be tomorrow. 00:53:48.22\00:53:50.89 So if you ate zero yesterday maybe begin to eat 1 or 2 pieces 00:53:51.09\00:53:54.66 of fruits and vegetables today 00:53:54.86\00:53:56.20 and slowly work your way up to that 8 pieces of fruits 00:53:56.33\00:53:59.20 or vegetables in a day or servings of fruits or vegetables 00:53:59.40\00:54:01.90 and you'll find that your mental health, your body, you just 00:54:02.10\00:54:05.21 start feeling better. I won't make this long 00:54:05.41\00:54:07.88 but they also found that alcoholics with lower levels 00:54:08.08\00:54:12.01 of gut diversity - bac- terial diversity in their guts - 00:54:12.65\00:54:14.98 also find it harder. So this affects so many 00:54:15.18\00:54:17.95 different areas of our lives. 00:54:18.15\00:54:19.49 That's going on with the addictive - yes - type of thing 00:54:19.62\00:54:22.62 that you spoke about earlier. That's right. 00:54:22.82\00:54:24.16 And it changed my life as I changed diet, not feeling like 00:54:24.33\00:54:26.43 just this addict all the time. 00:54:26.63\00:54:28.66 We've been talking about the gut/brain connection. 00:54:28.86\00:54:30.83 So important, but what are some of the other things 00:54:31.03\00:54:33.34 that you do? We've got three minutes. Yes. 00:54:33.54\00:54:34.87 So... And I would say one thing that was already stated: 00:54:35.00\00:54:38.01 if you have any interest, contact us. We'd love to come 00:54:38.21\00:54:40.64 and share on more because we have a whole series 00:54:40.84\00:54:43.75 on this at anchorpointfilms.com 00:54:43.95\00:54:47.25 You can contact us there. 00:54:47.45\00:54:48.78 We've got things like Transform Brain, Transform Life 00:54:49.52\00:54:52.45 and that talks about how neuroplasticity changes 00:54:52.65\00:54:56.79 your brain. Fantastic subject! Bible memorization. 00:54:56.99\00:54:59.39 We talk about overcoming habits, addictions. 00:54:59.59\00:55:02.30 Lack of forgiveness... that's our overcoming seminar. 00:55:02.50\00:55:04.53 Of course the gut/brain connection. 00:55:04.73\00:55:06.84 And then also we do one on overcoming diabetes 00:55:07.04\00:55:10.61 because so many people are dealing with that issue today. 00:55:10.81\00:55:13.61 We had a need. My dad died of diabetic complications. 00:55:13.81\00:55:16.88 His dad has come down with diabetes 00:55:17.08\00:55:19.15 and we said: "We need to make one on diabetes. " 00:55:19.35\00:55:21.68 And so we have done that as well, and we've shared that 00:55:21.88\00:55:24.22 around and it really transforms people's lives 00:55:24.42\00:55:26.55 in short order. It's amazing. We had a man come with 00:55:26.76\00:55:29.49 what's called neuropathy. You can go numb in your feet 00:55:29.69\00:55:32.36 or you have pains like razor blades in your feet 00:55:32.56\00:55:35.26 all the time. We had an 80-year-old man. He's 80. 00:55:35.46\00:55:37.77 You know, there's not much hope. No! 00:55:37.97\00:55:39.30 He began to implement the things coming to our seminar. 00:55:39.43\00:55:42.07 With two weeks... Actually within 3 days the neuropathy 00:55:42.27\00:55:45.24 began to go away and within 2-1/2 weeks 00:55:45.44\00:55:48.01 it was 99% gone he told us. 00:55:48.21\00:55:50.65 99%! He was depressed; walking with a cane 00:55:50.85\00:55:53.92 the first day he came into the seminar. 00:55:54.12\00:55:55.92 And within 2 weeks no more cane. 00:55:56.12\00:55:57.62 He's walking without a cane; he's smiling. Yes! 00:55:57.82\00:55:59.95 He's teaching, and he was even... after doing this for 00:56:00.16\00:56:02.86 a couple weeks he came and taught people how to eat 00:56:03.06\00:56:06.23 this way himself because he had just learned himself. 00:56:06.43\00:56:08.83 And so you think: "Oh, I'm too old. 00:56:09.03\00:56:11.20 There's no hope for me. " 00:56:11.40\00:56:12.73 But it's not true. Our bodies want to be healthy. 00:56:12.77\00:56:16.27 God made our bodies. The Bible says our bodies 00:56:16.47\00:56:18.37 are "fearfully and wonderfully made. " Oh definitely! Um-hmm. 00:56:18.57\00:56:20.41 And as we implement the simple strategies God gives us 00:56:20.61\00:56:24.45 in His Word... There's a verse in Psalm 103 verse 5 00:56:24.65\00:56:27.48 that says that "God is the One that satisfies our mouth with 00:56:27.68\00:56:31.05 good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle's. " 00:56:31.25\00:56:34.59 And I can tell you... Well, you think: "Well you're still 00:56:34.79\00:56:36.96 young. " I'm 38 years old. I felt better 00:56:37.16\00:56:40.26 as a 38-year-old man than I did when I was 00:56:40.46\00:56:43.26 16 or 18 years old. So God's Word is true. 00:56:43.47\00:56:45.87 "He satisfies our mouth with good things 00:56:46.07\00:56:48.67 so that our youth is renewed like the eagle's. " 00:56:48.87\00:56:51.44 That's right. So what I'm thinking of 00:56:51.64\00:56:53.84 is the information that you gain and when you put it into 00:56:54.04\00:56:56.95 practice these are the results. And you can have those 00:56:57.15\00:57:00.02 same results. Yes! And wouldn't you want to have 00:57:00.22\00:57:03.99 a brain that is functioning "righter? " Absolutely! 00:57:04.19\00:57:08.06 It's easier to remember things. Yes. 00:57:08.26\00:57:11.29 It is not growing old with Alzheimer's or dementia. 00:57:11.49\00:57:15.50 Yes! And it's just staying healthy and strong 00:57:15.70\00:57:18.33 the way that God wanted it to be. And you can have a closer 00:57:18.53\00:57:20.84 relationship with God as you eat the right food. 00:57:21.04\00:57:25.37 As your gut is healthy you actually can worship God 00:57:25.57\00:57:29.01 better and relate to Him better. 00:57:29.21\00:57:31.45 And that is what God wants more than anything. 00:57:31.85\00:57:34.15 Chad and Fadia, thank you so much for being with us. 00:57:34.55\00:57:38.25 We have really enjoyed this as much as we did last time 00:57:38.45\00:57:40.69 we spoke with you. 00:57:40.89\00:57:42.22 Meanwhile we pray that God will bless you 00:57:42.26\00:57:44.26 and keep you until we meet you again. 00:57:44.46\00:57:46.29
