Hello and welcome to 3ABN Now. 00:00:21.05\00:00:23.42 I'm sure you're going to enjoy this program today. 00:00:23.62\00:00:26.12 It's something that's very near to my heart 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.39 in actual fact. Our subject is: What is in your heart? 00:00:28.59\00:00:31.79 And most of you will say: "Well there's blood and there's 00:00:31.99\00:00:34.63 valves and all of those sorts of things. " 00:00:34.83\00:00:36.33 But I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.73 emotions and particularly desires. From the heart 00:00:38.93\00:00:42.50 emanates our desires and our actions. 00:00:42.70\00:00:45.61 And with us today on the program we've got Dr. Eddie Ramirez. 00:00:45.81\00:00:48.74 I always enjoy having you on the program, Eddie, because 00:00:48.94\00:00:51.25 you're a wealth of knowledge. And your research, 00:00:51.45\00:00:53.98 being a research doctor at the Weimar Institute 00:00:54.18\00:00:57.09 and the Nedley Clinic that you are getting all the latest 00:00:57.29\00:01:02.36 information available and then presenting it and using that 00:01:02.56\00:01:06.56 to help... I would say to help people understand 00:01:06.76\00:01:09.33 better how they should live and what they should do. 00:01:09.53\00:01:11.53 But you know there's a text in the Bible that's found in 00:01:11.93\00:01:14.94 Jeremiah chapter 17 verse 9 and it says something like this: 00:01:15.14\00:01:19.17 "The heart is deceitfully wicked above all things 00:01:19.37\00:01:22.11 and desperately wicked. Who can know it? " 00:01:22.31\00:01:26.72 Who can know it? I know there's someone: that's God. 00:01:26.92\00:01:29.58 So let's go, Eddie. Well, I recently read 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.82 a story that came out a few years ago 00:01:33.02\00:01:35.62 about this Hungarian soldier 00:01:36.12\00:01:40.86 that was captured by the Russians. Um-hmm. 00:01:41.06\00:01:43.90 And when they first got him... 00:01:44.10\00:01:47.80 that was back in 1945... 00:01:48.00\00:01:50.84 they determined this man probably got damaged 00:01:51.91\00:01:55.14 because of the war and all these things. 00:01:55.34\00:01:57.55 "We think that he is crazy. " 00:01:57.71\00:02:00.25 Um-hmm. They couldn't understand what he was saying 00:02:00.45\00:02:02.35 or anything. So they put him in the psychiatric ward 00:02:02.55\00:02:07.89 in Russia in 1945. 00:02:08.09\00:02:10.96 And in the year 2000 as they were checking all cases 00:02:11.16\00:02:16.60 and trying to empty the ward and so forth 00:02:16.80\00:02:19.07 one of the psychiatrists assigned to deal with this case 00:02:19.47\00:02:25.97 as he was examining this particular prisoner 00:02:26.17\00:02:29.91 he said: "Wait a minute! This man... his cognition is fine. 00:02:30.11\00:02:36.85 Everything is fine with him. 00:02:37.05\00:02:39.25 What happened is that he speaks a very rare 00:02:39.65\00:02:44.56 dialect of Hungarian 00:02:44.76\00:02:46.80 and you thought that he was crazy. 00:02:47.20\00:02:51.03 He is fine! " Imagine spending from 1945 00:02:51.23\00:02:56.20 to the year 2000 in a place - that's a lot of years - 00:02:56.40\00:03:00.34 that you cannot even communicate or anything. 00:03:00.54\00:03:04.31 They are just treating you as a sick person 00:03:04.51\00:03:07.02 because they didn't understand you. 00:03:07.22\00:03:09.45 So this is the interesting thing: 00:03:09.65\00:03:11.85 In the article - you can read about it - 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.49 he... you know what was his request? 00:03:14.69\00:03:18.19 Now that he was able to communicate with the people 00:03:18.39\00:03:23.20 he said: "You know what I want? I want a mirror. " 00:03:23.40\00:03:27.60 He had not seen himself for 55 years. 00:03:28.30\00:03:34.21 And when they brought that mirror to him 00:03:35.14\00:03:37.71 he couldn't believe what was before his eyes 00:03:38.31\00:03:43.32 how old he looked. Imagine not looking at yourself 00:03:44.35\00:03:48.39 in a mirror for 55 years. 00:03:48.59\00:03:51.36 And he put his hands in his face 00:03:51.76\00:03:55.96 and just cried and cried 00:03:56.16\00:03:58.87 to see what had become of him. 00:04:00.20\00:04:03.94 It was tragic, really, wasn't it? 00:04:04.14\00:04:05.57 It was tragic. Yeah. So what you just read 00:04:05.77\00:04:09.44 is that there is a need 00:04:09.84\00:04:14.08 for a mirror for our soul. Um-hmm. 00:04:14.28\00:04:18.29 And that mirror is going to show us 00:04:18.85\00:04:22.92 who we really are. 00:04:23.12\00:04:26.90 Many times we self-deceive ourselves. 00:04:27.56\00:04:31.03 We're good at doing that. 00:04:31.43\00:04:33.13 We're good at it, you know. 00:04:33.34\00:04:35.00 And that's why in our depression program 00:04:35.20\00:04:38.24 it's required reading. 00:04:38.64\00:04:41.44 Every single one of our patients 00:04:41.64\00:04:44.95 needs to read a book by the name of 00:04:45.15\00:04:48.28 Telling Yourself The Truth. 00:04:48.48\00:04:51.55 Telling Yourself The Truth? Telling Yourself the Truth 00:04:51.82\00:04:54.49 in which we need to understand that our thoughts 00:04:54.69\00:04:59.29 and our actions should be directed 00:05:00.30\00:05:03.60 according to truth. Um-hmm. 00:05:03.80\00:05:06.90 Because our feelings change, come and go, 00:05:07.20\00:05:10.77 or wrong ideas... inflation of pride and so forth... 00:05:10.97\00:05:16.78 can give us the wrong direction. 00:05:16.98\00:05:19.55 And there's a verse there that we would like to share 00:05:19.75\00:05:22.92 with the audience. And that's in Deuteronomy chapter 8 00:05:23.12\00:05:26.89 and verse 2 and it reads like this: 00:05:27.09\00:05:29.22 "And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God 00:05:29.62\00:05:33.40 led thee these forty years in the wilderness 00:05:33.60\00:05:36.10 to humble thee and to prove thee 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.27 to know what was in thine heart 00:05:39.47\00:05:42.17 whether thou wouldst keep His commandments or no. " 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.97 It's very interesting. If you analyze 00:05:45.47\00:05:47.84 the geography of Israel... I was just there 00:05:48.04\00:05:52.41 lecturing in Israel and Egypt 00:05:52.61\00:05:57.19 just a few months ago. 00:05:57.39\00:05:58.72 And if you go to the map 00:05:59.49\00:06:02.29 and you see the distance between Egypt and Israel 00:06:02.59\00:06:08.53 if they were to allow you to walk it... I don't think 00:06:09.46\00:06:11.63 they allow you to walk it, but if you were to be allowed 00:06:11.83\00:06:13.57 to walk it you will see 00:06:13.77\00:06:18.54 that it doesn't take 40 years. 00:06:18.74\00:06:20.21 No. But see: the Bible verse tells us 00:06:20.41\00:06:25.21 a very important clue. 00:06:25.41\00:06:26.78 Even though it was something that could have been 00:06:27.28\00:06:30.09 accomplished in 3 weeks or so 00:06:30.29\00:06:32.82 it took them 40 years. 00:06:33.22\00:06:36.32 And why did it take them so long? 00:06:36.73\00:06:39.63 Because of two things: 00:06:40.03\00:06:42.50 Number one: God wanted to humble them; 00:06:42.70\00:06:47.97 um-hmm... and Number two: God wanted to show them 00:06:48.17\00:06:53.24 what was in their heart. 00:06:53.44\00:06:55.68 And you know, time is the best revealer of that fact, 00:06:55.88\00:06:59.15 isn't it? If you are left to your devices 00:06:59.35\00:07:01.78 for any period of time, it will reveal itself. 00:07:01.98\00:07:05.89 And so it's good to wait. And on God's timing 00:07:06.09\00:07:10.63 that's the best timing. Um-hmm. 00:07:10.83\00:07:13.50 Now, as they went through those trials and so forth 00:07:13.90\00:07:18.83 then the true thing started to come up. 00:07:19.03\00:07:23.04 You know... the idolatry, the disrespect for leadership. 00:07:23.24\00:07:28.31 A big problem that we have today, by the way. 00:07:28.51\00:07:30.51 The revelry... the "I want to do it my way not God's way. " 00:07:32.25\00:07:37.95 And you can see as you continue reading the Torah - 00:07:38.65\00:07:42.32 the first 5 books of the Bible - 00:07:42.52\00:07:44.76 you will see that that story starts to get very clear 00:07:45.16\00:07:49.36 how God needed to cleanse and remove some of those 00:07:49.56\00:07:55.40 elements... and that's what happened. 00:07:55.60\00:07:58.74 Now, that same mirror 00:07:59.14\00:08:02.74 that was used on the Israelites... 00:08:02.94\00:08:06.48 See, it was a mirror. If you don't have a mirror, 00:08:06.68\00:08:08.72 you don't know what's happening. If you have a spot here 00:08:08.92\00:08:12.02 or what needs to be fixed in the hair and so forth. 00:08:12.22\00:08:15.02 Every morning we go through that routine. 00:08:15.42\00:08:17.46 We want to fix things up and so forth 00:08:17.66\00:08:22.76 and we use the mirror as a help for that. 00:08:22.96\00:08:26.30 In the same way God uses a mirror to show them 00:08:26.70\00:08:31.21 what was in their heart. 00:08:31.41\00:08:33.04 And it's very interesting regarding pride. 00:08:33.34\00:08:35.41 Either you humble yourself 00:08:36.68\00:08:39.85 or God will have to humble you. 00:08:40.92\00:08:44.39 And then the latter sometimes is not very nice. 00:08:45.22\00:08:48.62 That's right... it's not very nice. 00:08:48.82\00:08:50.39 So I think, personal opinion, 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.20 it is better to humble before God 00:08:54.66\00:08:59.70 because either way you will be humbled. 00:08:59.90\00:09:03.04 OK. Either way you will be humbled. 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.67 It's best to follow God's direction. 00:09:05.87\00:09:08.04 That's really what it requires. 00:09:08.24\00:09:09.94 Yes. So we need first the redemption - 00:09:10.15\00:09:13.72 um-hmm - then we can get the righteousness 00:09:13.92\00:09:18.15 and then we can truly give our lives to God 00:09:18.35\00:09:22.59 and worship Him. It's an order that needs to happen. 00:09:22.79\00:09:27.36 But many times pride works as a barrier 00:09:27.86\00:09:33.50 between Him and us. 00:09:33.70\00:09:35.60 For example: a mother that cooks some 00:09:36.00\00:09:40.91 good wholesome cookies and puts them in a jar 00:09:41.11\00:09:44.95 and tells the son: "Look, I'm going to go out 00:09:45.25\00:09:48.92 and don't eat those cookies. " 00:09:49.12\00:09:52.72 And as she is out, temptation comes in the heart of this kid 00:09:52.92\00:09:58.03 and he goes ahead and starts to open the jar. 00:09:58.23\00:10:01.53 And at that time 00:10:01.93\00:10:03.97 he hears that she is coming. 00:10:04.77\00:10:08.47 Where does he would like her to be? 00:10:08.97\00:10:13.17 Not coming. As far as possible, isn't it? Yes! 00:10:13.88\00:10:17.55 And that's what sin does in our lives. 00:10:17.71\00:10:21.02 It separates us from God. 00:10:21.75\00:10:25.52 It creates that separation. 00:10:25.72\00:10:28.62 And many times we need to find 00:10:28.82\00:10:33.86 not the fruit but the root. Where did it come from? 00:10:34.06\00:10:38.57 And in many instances is the root of pride. 00:10:39.40\00:10:45.01 It continually... You know, I was thinking 00:10:45.81\00:10:48.28 of that child. The right thing would have been 00:10:48.48\00:10:50.85 to have done... OK, we might have that desire in our heart 00:10:51.05\00:10:53.85 but when we get to that point where we open the jar 00:10:54.25\00:10:57.32 and we take it, that's the time 00:10:57.52\00:10:59.85 to remember what was said and close the lid. 00:11:00.06\00:11:03.69 But that's a challenge, isn't it, Dr. Eddie? 00:11:04.09\00:11:05.69 That's correct. So the Bible is full 00:11:05.89\00:11:09.40 of stories in which they communicate to us 00:11:09.60\00:11:14.14 characters... good characters or bad characters... 00:11:14.30\00:11:18.31 so we can learn and avoid this type of things. Um-hmm. 00:11:18.51\00:11:21.94 If you continue reading after you finish Deuteronomy, 00:11:22.14\00:11:26.11 you will start to read about the kings of Israel 00:11:26.31\00:11:30.39 and you have the example of Solomon. 00:11:30.79\00:11:35.16 Supposed to be the wisest man. 00:11:35.36\00:11:37.23 That's right. That ever lived! 00:11:37.43\00:11:38.93 Showing us what happens with untamed passions. 00:11:39.13\00:11:44.67 And how can the most intelligent person on planet earth 00:11:45.27\00:11:51.21 end up bowing down before idols and so forth. 00:11:51.71\00:11:55.38 I mean, incredible, you know? 00:11:55.58\00:11:58.11 He was able to turn his life later on 00:11:58.31\00:12:01.55 but his influence was already done. 00:12:01.75\00:12:05.95 And the influence that he had in his children and the children 00:12:06.35\00:12:10.06 in Israel as they saw the leader of their country 00:12:10.26\00:12:14.16 not following those godly principles. 00:12:14.36\00:12:18.67 Idolatry and revelry and all these seeds were planted 00:12:19.77\00:12:25.51 that later on gave the negative result 00:12:25.71\00:12:28.81 that ended up as a result of this in Babylon and so forth. 00:12:29.01\00:12:33.52 You know, I get excited, Eddie, because when you read the Bible 00:12:33.72\00:12:37.75 you will find these stories 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.55 but they tell both sides of the story. 00:12:39.75\00:12:41.76 It's not tainted in one direction. Yes! 00:12:41.96\00:12:44.23 Because Solomon should have had wise children. 00:12:44.43\00:12:48.10 Should have learned from their father 00:12:48.30\00:12:51.00 what was right and what was wrong. 00:12:51.20\00:12:53.07 But soon as his son Rehoboam began to reign 00:12:53.47\00:12:56.07 after 40 years that Solomon reigned 00:12:56.27\00:12:58.07 his son did something that I find quite interesting. 00:12:58.27\00:13:00.91 He did. He asked the the counsel of his father's 00:13:01.31\00:13:03.98 advisers if you could say like that. Yes. 00:13:06.95\00:13:08.98 But then he thought: "Well now I've grown up with 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.85 these young ones. I'm going to ask what they think. " 00:13:12.05\00:13:14.56 And what he did? He took the counsel of the young ones. 00:13:15.06\00:13:17.69 You see, we are always apt to be learning from our parents. 00:13:17.89\00:13:22.80 And it's a parent's role to be teaching our children 00:13:23.00\00:13:25.60 the right way. And the best way that I see when you read the 00:13:25.80\00:13:28.40 Word of God God is showing both sides. 00:13:28.60\00:13:30.47 He actually wants you to choose the right thing. 00:13:30.87\00:13:33.27 He wants you to be humble and respect Him because 00:13:33.48\00:13:36.51 He has the ABSOLUTE knowledge, the absolute truth. 00:13:36.71\00:13:40.62 And so the Word of God is very very encouraging 00:13:41.02\00:13:44.85 to help you live the life you want to. 00:13:45.05\00:13:47.49 Yes! Rehoboam shows us what somebody that wants 00:13:47.99\00:13:53.66 power yet is weak causes. 00:13:53.86\00:13:57.93 That's exactly his example. 00:13:58.13\00:14:01.90 And regarding Solomon it also gives us 00:14:02.10\00:14:06.27 a little picture of what we are facing here 00:14:06.47\00:14:11.48 especially in the Western world. 00:14:11.68\00:14:13.58 You know, his parents had lots of struggles. 00:14:13.98\00:14:17.69 David had lots of persecution. 00:14:17.89\00:14:20.66 Had to hide himself and run away 00:14:20.86\00:14:23.53 even to the enemy and to hide himself there. 00:14:23.73\00:14:26.43 Many times his life was in danger. 00:14:26.83\00:14:29.00 Yet when Solomon comes everything is peaceful. 00:14:30.23\00:14:33.84 Everything is nice. Wealth was readily available. 00:14:34.04\00:14:39.37 And he started to forget about the God 00:14:40.38\00:14:44.88 that gave him those things. Now that's the point, isn't it? 00:14:45.08\00:14:48.22 That's the point. Which is something we're seeing even in 00:14:48.42\00:14:51.79 countries like this: Australia and New Zealand. 00:14:51.99\00:14:54.79 Protestant-built countries built on true Christianity 00:14:54.99\00:15:00.46 and so forth. And as people get abundance of bread... 00:15:00.66\00:15:05.77 generation comes up... and idleness 00:15:05.97\00:15:07.47 that's right. They start to forget who it is who gave them 00:15:07.67\00:15:12.34 this progress, stability and so forth 00:15:12.54\00:15:15.88 to these wonderful nations of today. 00:15:16.08\00:15:19.81 Yet as happened in the time of Solomon 00:15:20.02\00:15:24.62 it continues to happen even today. Um-hmm. 00:15:24.82\00:15:28.82 And then we get to Jeroboam. Um-hmm. 00:15:29.02\00:15:31.76 In Jeroboam we get an example of an unteachable 00:15:32.26\00:15:38.20 man yet that was in a privileged position. 00:15:38.40\00:15:42.80 What happens if you have 00:15:43.20\00:15:46.74 an unteachable spirit? 00:15:46.94\00:15:50.25 And may God save us from that. You know? 00:15:50.45\00:15:52.28 Sometimes our pride says: 00:15:52.48\00:15:54.48 "No, I shouldn't say that I was wrong. " 00:15:54.68\00:15:58.19 Yet if you don't have a teachable spirit 00:15:58.39\00:16:03.36 you will end up doing some really bad things, 00:16:03.56\00:16:07.10 big mistakes. And you're prone to repeat them 00:16:07.30\00:16:12.53 because if you don't learn from those mistakes 00:16:12.73\00:16:15.57 they will come back over and over again. 00:16:15.77\00:16:19.61 That's true... very true! 00:16:19.81\00:16:21.14 So that's why the Scripture is a wonderful book - 00:16:21.41\00:16:26.72 Just like God, too, isn't it? - 00:16:26.92\00:16:28.75 to learn about all these stories 00:16:28.95\00:16:32.69 that teach us how to avoid those holes 00:16:32.89\00:16:37.63 where these people fell. Um-hmm. 00:16:37.79\00:16:40.86 So... But history doesn't really show that, does it? 00:16:41.06\00:16:43.93 That's what we think should happen, but history shows 00:16:44.13\00:16:47.14 that we are very stubborn and stiff-necked people. 00:16:47.34\00:16:49.50 That's right. And that's what happened also with the people 00:16:49.70\00:16:53.51 of Israel. And see here is a good description 00:16:53.71\00:16:57.41 of what pride is. 00:16:57.61\00:17:00.72 This is from 00:17:00.92\00:17:04.15 a psychologist and theologian. 00:17:06.05\00:17:10.69 Dr. Bacchus is his name. 00:17:11.09\00:17:13.63 He put together this description of pride. 00:17:13.83\00:17:17.57 So let me read to you that description: 00:17:17.77\00:17:20.54 Well, you know, that would be a good way to find out 00:18:01.48\00:18:04.55 whether you actually have pride by ticking/checking each of the 00:18:04.75\00:18:08.38 those little boxes and seeing how many of them apply to you. 00:18:08.58\00:18:11.32 Because I think somewhere along the line 00:18:11.72\00:18:13.89 that may be a case for each one of us. 00:18:14.09\00:18:15.72 That's correct! See, it's in our DNA. 00:18:15.92\00:18:19.46 Once our forefathers introduced sin in our system 00:18:19.86\00:18:24.77 it's something that we have inherited. 00:18:24.97\00:18:28.97 I mean, even when our children were small 00:18:29.17\00:18:33.01 we witnessed this. 00:18:33.21\00:18:34.54 It's not like they were like: 00:18:34.94\00:18:37.31 "Oh, you're giving things too much. " No, you know... 00:18:37.51\00:18:40.35 the children it's "me, me, me. " "It's my toy. " 00:18:40.55\00:18:43.85 It's "me, me, me. " 00:18:45.12\00:18:46.62 They have this 00:18:47.56\00:18:50.73 from the early age. 00:18:50.93\00:18:53.36 The reason why you wake up in the middle of the night 00:18:53.56\00:18:56.56 the baby crying "Come! I need attention! " 00:18:56.77\00:18:59.33 is "me, me, me. " 00:18:59.53\00:19:01.20 I don't know any parent who does not then get up 00:19:04.04\00:19:06.44 and go to the child. So what do we do if 00:19:06.64\00:19:10.71 we identify some of these issues in our lives? 00:19:10.91\00:19:15.75 Hmm. As I mentioned, there's two routes. 00:19:15.95\00:19:18.79 You can do it the hard way: 00:19:19.19\00:19:21.49 Don't humble yourself... keep doing what you're doing 00:19:22.32\00:19:25.53 and believe me sooner or later 00:19:25.73\00:19:29.60 you will be humbled. Hmm. 00:19:29.80\00:19:31.77 OR... we can do it God's way 00:19:32.17\00:19:35.97 in which we make the focus of our study 00:19:36.57\00:19:42.01 the life of Jesus Christ. Um-hmm. 00:19:42.21\00:19:45.88 The humbleness that He had: 00:19:46.08\00:19:49.02 the putting His kingly power to come and become 00:19:49.22\00:19:54.56 one of us. His life of passion 00:19:54.76\00:19:59.89 of saving souls. 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.16 His tremendous miracles 00:20:02.56\00:20:07.20 that He did. We can be humble 00:20:07.40\00:20:12.61 as we observe Him. 00:20:12.81\00:20:15.04 There's a principle in the Bible that says 00:20:15.24\00:20:17.71 that what we behold we become changed. 00:20:17.91\00:20:22.98 And you know this very well: 00:20:23.18\00:20:24.59 for example, if the circle of people that you hang around 00:20:24.79\00:20:30.53 speaks wrongly, bad words and bad actions, 00:20:30.93\00:20:36.16 there's two things that's going to happen 00:20:36.36\00:20:38.23 if you become part of that group. 00:20:38.43\00:20:39.90 Either you're going to compromise 00:20:40.64\00:20:42.50 and you will start becoming like them - 00:20:42.70\00:20:45.47 that's right - OR they're going to kick you out. 00:20:45.67\00:20:48.41 You know, you're not going to fit in that group. 00:20:48.61\00:20:52.08 So things... we are impressionable. 00:20:52.81\00:20:57.25 And so that's why you can see in the life of 2 elderly persons 00:20:57.65\00:21:03.46 that have been married for a long time 00:21:03.66\00:21:06.59 what happens to them? They start to look like each other. 00:21:06.80\00:21:10.37 They start to act like each other. 00:21:10.77\00:21:13.30 They start to talk like each other 00:21:13.50\00:21:15.70 because they have influence to one another. 00:21:16.10\00:21:20.48 And that's what we need to be so careful 00:21:20.88\00:21:23.85 what kinds of things we feed "up here. " 00:21:24.05\00:21:28.08 Feeding the wrong type of thing 00:21:28.48\00:21:31.19 may be actually feeding things like your pride 00:21:31.39\00:21:34.69 and you're making things worse as a result of that. 00:21:35.16\00:21:39.03 I want to read this quotation about the life 00:21:39.23\00:21:43.57 of Jesus. How He was a true example 00:21:44.07\00:21:50.01 for us to follow. 00:21:50.21\00:21:53.78 Beautiful words! 00:23:29.27\00:23:30.84 You know, I think of that: Jesus was not self-focused. 00:23:31.04\00:23:35.41 He was "other-focused. " 00:23:35.81\00:23:37.15 And we as human beings we will have the soundest 00:23:37.31\00:23:39.81 and the best life when that is applicable because 00:23:40.02\00:23:42.38 pride can't dwell there when we are focused on others. 00:23:42.58\00:23:45.65 So, you know, all these words are very pertinent 00:23:45.85\00:23:49.62 when we look at what's going on in our heart. 00:23:50.03\00:23:52.43 And the thing of it is is that 00:23:52.83\00:23:55.00 we have a special ability in our brains 00:23:55.20\00:23:59.23 to be connected with God throughout the day. 00:23:59.43\00:24:03.30 Um-hmm. You can be doing your work 00:24:03.51\00:24:06.37 whether it be construction or computers or selling 00:24:06.57\00:24:09.54 and have a communion with God. 00:24:09.74\00:24:14.52 Conversing... asking for advice 00:24:14.72\00:24:19.02 as you're facing the decisions of the day. 00:24:19.22\00:24:21.96 This is something that it can be developed. 00:24:22.36\00:24:26.39 Um-hmm. And in that way we can start to show 00:24:26.80\00:24:31.37 a little bit of the example of Jesus. 00:24:31.57\00:24:34.60 Jesus was constantly connected to His heavenly Father. 00:24:34.80\00:24:40.78 And every action and word that He would say 00:24:41.18\00:24:45.38 would be to glorify God. That's right. 00:24:45.58\00:24:48.45 And that's the goal that He has for each one of our lives: 00:24:48.65\00:24:53.72 that we can be a reflection of Him. 00:24:53.92\00:24:57.53 We can see an example of Peter. 00:24:57.73\00:25:00.50 When Peter went to follow Him from afar off 00:25:00.90\00:25:04.73 when He was being judged before the crucifixion 00:25:04.93\00:25:08.67 the people around Peter noticed 00:25:08.87\00:25:12.91 that he looked like Jesus. Um-hmm. 00:25:13.11\00:25:16.81 Even though he didn't say anything about Him. 00:25:17.01\00:25:19.45 "You were with Him... you were with Him! " 00:25:19.65\00:25:20.98 "You were with Him. Look, you're talking like Him" 00:25:21.08\00:25:23.22 you know, and all these things. 00:25:23.42\00:25:25.62 And that's when he ended up denying his Master - 00:25:26.02\00:25:29.09 that's right - and so forth. 00:25:29.29\00:25:31.29 But see, that time that Jesus had spent with him 00:25:31.49\00:25:36.20 had an influence molding him into His image. 00:25:36.40\00:25:41.04 Um-hmm. In the same way 00:25:41.24\00:25:43.37 it is His desire as we contemplate that life 00:25:43.57\00:25:48.18 of humbleness... And there's many tools you can use. 00:25:48.38\00:25:51.18 If you need some ideas, 00:25:51.38\00:25:53.35 there is a wonderful book by the name of Steps to Christ. 00:25:53.55\00:25:57.62 And if you want something more thorough and more 00:25:57.82\00:26:01.62 profound there's another book by the name of Desire of Ages. 00:26:01.82\00:26:07.83 You can find those tools readily available. 00:26:08.23\00:26:12.53 And to read the life of Jesus 00:26:12.93\00:26:16.27 has an impact in us. 00:26:16.47\00:26:19.21 As we are contemplating we become changed 00:26:19.41\00:26:24.31 according to His Word. Hmm. 00:26:24.51\00:26:27.25 Good thoughts there, and I hope you're taking note of these 00:26:27.75\00:26:30.32 because we want - and God wants - us to be humble. 00:26:30.52\00:26:35.22 That in humbleness we show kindness, love, and affection 00:26:35.72\00:26:39.59 to other people. And particularly in our home 00:26:39.79\00:26:42.03 we need to display that humbleness that Jesus showed. 00:26:42.23\00:26:45.03 So that's the good way. That's the way 00:26:45.23\00:26:48.84 that God can humble us as we every day 00:26:49.04\00:26:53.81 come to the cross. Recognize that we need His help. 00:26:54.01\00:26:58.18 Recognize that pride is in our heart. 00:26:58.38\00:27:01.92 That we are in need of Him. 00:27:02.12\00:27:04.72 See, how much you desire Him, 00:27:04.92\00:27:08.32 how much you want Him 00:27:08.52\00:27:11.09 has to do with how big you see your own problem. 00:27:11.29\00:27:15.80 Um-hmm. If you think that your problem 00:27:16.00\00:27:19.50 is this size you're going to look for help this size. 00:27:19.70\00:27:23.81 Um-hmm. But if you understand 00:27:24.01\00:27:27.11 the enormity of your issue inside your heart 00:27:27.31\00:27:32.35 you will realize that you need major help. 00:27:32.55\00:27:36.72 And that's what this mirror to the soul does. 00:27:37.52\00:27:42.66 As we read Scripture, as the Lord impresses our heart 00:27:42.86\00:27:47.86 of how wicked and corrupted is our nature 00:27:48.06\00:27:53.03 and how urgently we need 00:27:53.23\00:27:56.37 that forgiveness and regeneration 00:27:56.57\00:27:59.94 then we can go and seek Him 00:28:00.14\00:28:02.74 and He can transform our lives. That's right. 00:28:02.94\00:28:06.28 So this is a good way, but what about the bad way? 00:28:06.48\00:28:09.65 What about that person that doesn't want to humble 00:28:09.85\00:28:14.22 themselves? There's a theologian by the name of Thomas 00:28:14.42\00:28:18.56 in the Middle Ages. 00:28:18.76\00:28:21.60 He wrote the following description of what can happen 00:28:21.80\00:28:27.70 when somebody is not willing to humble themselves. 00:28:28.10\00:28:32.37 And we can see that on the screen. 00:28:32.57\00:28:35.21 So God sometimes in His mercy 00:29:30.33\00:29:35.74 is doing this. 00:29:35.94\00:29:37.67 He's not doing that because He's a "vengative" God 00:29:37.87\00:29:41.54 that: "OK, you did that. I'm going to 00:29:41.74\00:29:43.88 do something even worse to you. " 00:29:44.28\00:29:46.38 Rather in His providence 00:29:46.78\00:29:50.55 as we go through difficult times 00:29:50.95\00:29:55.56 and so forth that's the way that God sometimes 00:29:55.76\00:30:00.36 reaches the heart. The person says: "You know, 00:30:00.56\00:30:03.30 game over. God help me! " 00:30:03.50\00:30:05.20 THEN God can come and act in their lives. 00:30:05.40\00:30:09.54 I have an interesting story from my own grandfather. 00:30:09.74\00:30:12.87 My family - some of them - 00:30:13.74\00:30:17.98 they're actually... It's very interesting: some of them 00:30:18.38\00:30:21.72 actually came as Jews that moved to Mexico 00:30:21.92\00:30:26.25 running from the persecution that was happening in Spain 00:30:26.45\00:30:30.73 against them. And some of them 00:30:30.93\00:30:35.50 as they came to an area in Mexico that was 00:30:35.70\00:30:40.30 very Catholic most of them, if not all of them, 00:30:40.50\00:30:45.04 became Catholic. 00:30:45.24\00:30:46.57 And then there was a time in the history of Mexico 00:30:46.81\00:30:50.45 back in the early 1900's 00:30:50.65\00:30:55.95 in which there was a war in which 00:30:56.15\00:31:00.89 they had passed some laws towards religious freedom. 00:31:01.09\00:31:05.89 Um-hmm. Catholics didn't like this loss 00:31:06.09\00:31:08.36 of religious freedom and there was a whole revolution 00:31:08.56\00:31:12.17 that took place as a result of that. 00:31:12.37\00:31:14.07 And the father of my grandfather 00:31:15.00\00:31:19.71 he was very good friends with the Catholic priest 00:31:20.11\00:31:24.31 in the town there. 00:31:24.51\00:31:26.21 And one day that good friend 00:31:26.61\00:31:29.58 came with another group of people 00:31:29.78\00:31:32.15 and robbed him literally. 00:31:32.35\00:31:35.32 He took many of his cows and guns 00:31:35.52\00:31:38.63 and things that he had 00:31:38.83\00:31:40.36 in order to send those things for this war that was happening 00:31:40.56\00:31:44.63 and so forth. So the father of my grandfather 00:31:44.83\00:31:48.94 became very negative against religious things. 00:31:49.14\00:31:55.04 Um-hmm. He thought that, "you know, this is the way that 00:31:55.24\00:31:58.38 everybody is and, yeah, I don't want to do anything 00:31:58.58\00:32:01.18 with religion and so forth. " 00:32:01.38\00:32:03.55 But one day a man that was selling books 00:32:04.09\00:32:07.42 came to visit him, 00:32:07.62\00:32:10.19 and he was very interested about the books. 00:32:10.59\00:32:14.30 He was actually an Adventist canvasser. 00:32:14.50\00:32:16.83 And he left some books with them. 00:32:17.23\00:32:20.94 They started reading the books. 00:32:21.14\00:32:22.47 There was an interest to learn more 00:32:22.57\00:32:24.67 so the canvasser started coming on a regular basis 00:32:24.87\00:32:27.88 to have Bible studies with them. 00:32:28.08\00:32:29.74 And very soon the father of my grandfather 00:32:30.15\00:32:34.22 wanted to give his life to the Lord 00:32:34.42\00:32:36.69 and he was baptized. 00:32:36.89\00:32:38.69 He had seventeen children. 00:32:39.09\00:32:41.76 Whoo! And sixteen of them decided to get baptized. 00:32:41.96\00:32:47.70 The only one that didn't want to get baptized 00:32:47.90\00:32:51.17 was my grandfather... the father of my mom. 00:32:51.37\00:32:54.80 And it was a pride issue basically. 00:32:55.64\00:32:59.07 But notice the interesting way that God used. 00:32:59.71\00:33:03.55 So when the father... 00:33:04.15\00:33:10.12 my grandfather didn't want any- thing to do with these things. 00:33:10.32\00:33:14.72 So one day the canvasser came to visit him. 00:33:15.12\00:33:19.69 And my grandfather he had a big ranch 00:33:20.10\00:33:24.73 with lots of cows and so forth. 00:33:24.93\00:33:27.10 So he thought in his heart 00:33:27.87\00:33:30.07 "I'm going to teach a lesson to this canvasser 00:33:30.27\00:33:33.98 so he never comes back again to bother me. " 00:33:34.18\00:33:38.15 So he had a horse that nobody could ride. 00:33:39.48\00:33:42.42 It was a lost case. You know, you couldn't tame this horse. 00:33:43.22\00:33:48.82 So he thought: "I'm going to put this horse 00:33:49.22\00:33:52.43 next to this huge cactus patch" 00:33:52.63\00:33:56.60 yes... "because I want him to fall there, 00:33:56.80\00:33:59.63 learn his lesson, and never come back again to see me. " 00:33:59.83\00:34:03.71 And when he came he said: "Look, I have this horse 00:34:04.44\00:34:08.04 and I need your help. Could you help me fetch 00:34:08.24\00:34:11.15 these cows there? " And the canvasser, even though 00:34:11.35\00:34:13.72 he wasn't even a country person, he was more of a 00:34:13.92\00:34:16.32 city person, he said: "Well sure... " just to be nice. 00:34:16.52\00:34:20.06 "I'll be happy to help you. " 00:34:20.26\00:34:22.42 So he gets on the horse. The horse as calm as anything 00:34:22.62\00:34:28.06 goes for a good distance. 00:34:28.96\00:34:31.97 Fetches the cows, and when he comes back 00:34:32.17\00:34:35.87 my grandfather realizes 00:34:36.07\00:34:41.44 there's something divine here. 00:34:41.64\00:34:44.01 It's impossible to ride this horse. 00:34:44.41\00:34:47.05 His best horse riders couldn't ride that horse. 00:34:47.25\00:34:49.98 Eddie, I've got to stop you. I thought he was going to say 00:34:50.19\00:34:51.69 "Get off the horse... let me get off... " 00:34:51.89\00:34:53.22 and HE lands on the cactus. 00:34:53.39\00:34:54.79 So that's when he decided to give his life to the Lord. 00:34:56.66\00:35:02.06 And his life and influence was tremendous! 00:35:02.46\00:35:05.30 He actually built the first Adventist church 00:35:05.50\00:35:09.97 in town there. They used to say... call it 00:35:10.17\00:35:13.51 the church of my grandfather because he was the very first 00:35:13.71\00:35:17.25 one. And tremendous influence that he gave. 00:35:17.45\00:35:22.48 Once he humbled before the Lord 00:35:22.68\00:35:26.12 the Lord could work in his heart 00:35:26.32\00:35:28.72 and kindness and other good qualities were the result 00:35:29.12\00:35:34.93 of that transformation. 00:35:35.13\00:35:36.53 So what you're saying is really when the heart 00:35:36.73\00:35:38.90 is in a position to be open, to be taught, 00:35:39.10\00:35:41.87 this is what takes place in the life: 00:35:42.07\00:35:44.21 God changes it. That's correct! 00:35:44.41\00:35:46.91 So we need to understand that there are two ways. 00:35:47.11\00:35:52.45 Either we humble ourselves 00:35:52.85\00:35:55.72 or God will humble us. 00:35:55.92\00:35:59.19 Another very good example of this 00:35:59.59\00:36:03.16 was a very famous evangelical preacher. 00:36:03.36\00:36:08.00 Um-hmm. He actually set up one of the first 00:36:08.20\00:36:12.87 networks of television worldwide 00:36:14.64\00:36:18.57 by the name of PTL. 00:36:18.77\00:36:22.34 And Richard Dorst... that's his name... 00:36:22.88\00:36:25.91 if you lived a few years ago you're going to be very familiar 00:36:27.78\00:36:33.09 with him because his name was all over the news. 00:36:33.29\00:36:37.46 And it became a mess - his life - 00:36:37.66\00:36:42.06 even though he was "working for the Lord. " 00:36:42.26\00:36:48.27 Pride still was very dominant in his heart 00:36:49.84\00:36:55.01 and the Lord had to work in his heart 00:36:55.41\00:37:00.78 one way or another. And unfortunately 00:37:00.98\00:37:04.29 his story teaches us what happens 00:37:04.49\00:37:09.42 when we don't humble before the Lord. 00:37:09.62\00:37:12.46 It was so bad that he told his own son 00:37:12.66\00:37:17.63 "Please change your last name 00:37:18.03\00:37:21.77 so that they don't identify you as my son. " 00:37:22.60\00:37:26.37 That's how bad he ended up... 00:37:27.18\00:37:31.61 what position he ended up. 00:37:33.45\00:37:36.08 "I was so good... you are not. " 00:37:36.28\00:37:38.32 So let me share with you a little bit 00:37:38.82\00:37:43.06 of his story in his own words. 00:37:43.26\00:37:46.23 This is from the book that he wrote. 00:37:46.43\00:37:50.63 And I'm going to be reading these lines. 00:37:50.83\00:37:54.57 He says: "Sometimes I think the church 00:37:54.77\00:37:58.44 doesn't know about true success. 00:37:58.64\00:38:01.94 It is all tied to how many situations 00:38:02.34\00:38:05.21 we have in our network. 00:38:05.41\00:38:07.75 How big our building is. 00:38:07.95\00:38:09.88 How easy it is to lose control 00:38:10.29\00:38:13.29 to compromise without recognizing it. 00:38:13.49\00:38:16.52 At PTL - the television network - 00:38:16.73\00:38:18.93 there was no time to take prayer or our families any more 00:38:19.13\00:38:24.23 because the show just had to go on. 00:38:24.43\00:38:28.50 We were so caught up in God's work 00:38:28.70\00:38:32.57 that we forgot about God Himself. 00:38:32.77\00:38:35.88 It took this awful tragedy, 00:38:36.85\00:38:40.05 this kick in my teeth, 00:38:40.25\00:38:42.82 to bring me to my senses. 00:38:43.02\00:38:45.59 A television camera can change a preacher 00:38:45.79\00:38:49.12 quicker than anything else can. 00:38:49.32\00:38:51.73 Those who sit on the sidelines can notice the changes 00:38:52.13\00:38:56.06 in people once they get in front of the camera. 00:38:56.26\00:39:01.04 It turns ordinary men into petty potentiates. 00:39:01.44\00:39:06.04 It is so easy - isn't it? - to be swept away 00:39:06.24\00:39:10.05 by popularity. Everybody loves you! 00:39:10.25\00:39:13.58 Cars are waiting for you. You are at the head of the line. 00:39:13.78\00:39:19.52 It was the devastation of the camera for me. 00:39:19.92\00:39:23.66 It made me less 00:39:23.86\00:39:25.73 than what God intended me to become. " 00:39:26.13\00:39:30.77 Hmm. So he ended up 00:39:30.97\00:39:34.64 embellishing himself, robbing some of those funds. 00:39:35.90\00:39:40.21 And it became a mess - this thing - 00:39:40.41\00:39:44.08 and his life came to a stop. 00:39:44.28\00:39:48.08 He ended up from being in the studio 00:39:48.28\00:39:51.99 to the prison cell as a result of this. 00:39:52.19\00:39:55.66 Even giving a bad name to the gospel and so forth, 00:39:55.86\00:39:58.83 you know, for acting like this. 00:39:59.03\00:40:01.80 But it came to a stop. 00:40:02.00\00:40:06.00 See, the wrong behavior, the pride... God 00:40:06.20\00:40:11.17 had to deal with those things 00:40:11.37\00:40:14.18 and this story didn't end up very well. 00:40:14.34\00:40:18.38 God had to act and had to humble him. 00:40:18.58\00:40:22.98 Instead of him humbling himself unfortunately 00:40:23.18\00:40:27.92 the hard way happened on his life. 00:40:28.12\00:40:30.63 Hmm. It's a sad story really, isn't it? When you think 00:40:30.83\00:40:33.33 about it. I was thinking of the fact that he asked his son 00:40:33.53\00:40:35.66 to change his name. Maybe it was good because 00:40:35.86\00:40:37.90 his son now could not be associated with him. 00:40:38.10\00:40:40.70 After the whole fiasco - after that - yes, he said 00:40:40.90\00:40:45.64 "You know, it's better if you change your last name 00:40:45.84\00:40:49.78 so people don't associate me with you. " Imagine 00:40:49.98\00:40:54.42 You as a parent coming to that point - 00:40:55.32\00:40:58.49 you know? of having to tell your children 00:40:58.69\00:41:01.52 "You know, it's better if you change your last name. " 00:41:01.72\00:41:04.03 I mean, very very sad story as a result of that. 00:41:04.23\00:41:08.26 You know, I'm thinking about the Bible. The Bible says 00:41:08.46\00:41:11.37 to know God. How important it is to know God 00:41:12.63\00:41:16.07 because then when you look in a mirror 00:41:16.27\00:41:18.51 you really truly see yourself as you really are. 00:41:18.71\00:41:22.68 And so this man, he didn't... Even though he was 00:41:23.24\00:41:27.88 a great televangelist or a great speaker, 00:41:28.08\00:41:30.99 if he had known God he would not have been able 00:41:31.19\00:41:33.62 to go down that road because he would have known 00:41:33.82\00:41:35.99 what he was doing. But see: that's what pride does. 00:41:36.19\00:41:38.86 It blinds us to know about God 00:41:39.06\00:41:42.13 to know God and so our heart... Like I said 00:41:42.33\00:41:45.77 "is deceitfully wicked. " 00:41:45.97\00:41:47.30 And this is something I appreciate here 00:41:47.34\00:41:49.84 of 3ABN in parenthesis. I have come here many times 00:41:50.04\00:41:53.17 to record. And I can tell you today the day starts 00:41:53.38\00:41:59.58 with prayer. The day starts with a devotional reading. 00:41:59.78\00:42:03.99 The day starts with the whole group humbling 00:42:04.19\00:42:08.89 before the Lord asking for His guidance, 00:42:09.09\00:42:12.49 asking to provide and so forth. 00:42:12.69\00:42:17.10 And as long as we have that humble spirit 00:42:17.30\00:42:21.37 God then can bless us. 00:42:21.57\00:42:24.11 That's the crucial thing, and I say that because 00:42:24.31\00:42:27.34 it's not what we do... it's what God does 00:42:27.54\00:42:29.84 in relation to our response to Him. 00:42:30.05\00:42:32.58 That's the important part. 00:42:32.78\00:42:34.48 Pride diminishes when we get to know God 00:42:34.88\00:42:39.02 and realize what He's wanting to do for us, Eddie. 00:42:39.22\00:42:41.52 God does not want any of us to have difficulties 00:42:42.12\00:42:45.59 and traumas in our life. 00:42:45.79\00:42:47.90 In actual fact He wants us to be with Him 00:42:48.10\00:42:50.40 not only now but throughout eternity. 00:42:50.60\00:42:53.20 That's the good news of the gospel! 00:42:53.40\00:42:55.54 And see, many times we have so many things 00:42:55.74\00:43:00.21 that are competing for our attention and so forth. 00:43:00.41\00:43:04.15 That's right. And we need to put things in perspective. 00:43:04.31\00:43:09.25 What is important should be the most important. 00:43:09.45\00:43:14.12 And many times electronic devices and this type of things 00:43:14.52\00:43:19.06 they want us the whole day. 00:43:19.26\00:43:22.13 There was an interesting article that came out 00:43:22.33\00:43:25.93 that was written by David Gallanter. 00:43:27.27\00:43:31.47 He writes just after Deep Blue 00:43:31.67\00:43:37.65 which was the most powerful computer at that time 00:43:37.85\00:43:43.08 played a chess game against the best chess player 00:43:43.28\00:43:49.02 in the world. Um-hmm. 00:43:49.22\00:43:51.66 And this computer actually won! 00:43:52.06\00:43:55.63 And he - this person - 00:43:56.60\00:44:01.87 writes this essay putting things into perspective. 00:44:02.07\00:44:06.11 And let me read a little bit of it. It says: 00:44:06.31\00:44:10.05 So many times in our 00:45:44.14\00:45:48.71 materialistic pursuits and so forth 00:45:48.91\00:45:54.22 we are so focused at trying to get things 00:45:54.38\00:46:00.29 that don't satisfy us. Um-hmm. 00:46:00.49\00:46:04.53 God is the only thing that can truly satisfy 00:46:04.73\00:46:10.03 the human heart. And the... 00:46:10.23\00:46:14.94 those devices and all these other things 00:46:15.34\00:46:18.77 they can never fill the void 00:46:18.97\00:46:23.28 that only Jesus Christ can fill in inside of our heart. 00:46:23.48\00:46:29.22 Now many times some of those desires that we have 00:46:29.62\00:46:33.46 are because we want to fill in that void 00:46:33.86\00:46:37.99 with something that doesn't satisfy. 00:46:38.19\00:46:41.66 The only source of true happiness 00:46:42.06\00:46:47.37 is found in connecting with the Lord. 00:46:47.57\00:46:51.07 So science is never going to find 00:46:51.27\00:46:56.11 that substitute for God. 00:46:56.31\00:46:59.08 It doesn't matter where we turn or try to find 00:46:59.28\00:47:03.49 what God really wants is a relationship with us. 00:47:03.89\00:47:09.72 As we are a parent and child relationship 00:47:10.03\00:47:16.00 God wants that type of intimate connection with us 00:47:16.20\00:47:20.54 not because He's selfish but because He loves us. 00:47:20.94\00:47:24.67 I like to spend time with my children because I love them. 00:47:24.87\00:47:29.64 And in the same way God enjoys when we 00:47:29.84\00:47:35.25 are connecting with Him in an intimate fashion. 00:47:35.45\00:47:39.19 You know even I think of the fact that God 00:47:39.39\00:47:41.72 formed man out of the dust of the earth. 00:47:42.12\00:47:44.69 Formed him and then He breathed into him. 00:47:44.89\00:47:47.36 He has a personal touch. He's the one who put the heart there 00:47:47.56\00:47:51.03 and He knows how we would function the best. 00:47:51.87\00:47:55.74 But there was a lie told, and the thing is that I want to say 00:47:56.14\00:48:01.21 with Christ in your heart that's when your desires are 00:48:01.41\00:48:05.11 filled to the brim where we can be able to enjoy life 00:48:05.31\00:48:10.42 to the fullest. That's right! 00:48:10.62\00:48:12.45 And many times that idea that if we break God's law 00:48:12.65\00:48:17.26 it's going to be more fun... 00:48:17.46\00:48:19.79 I can tell you: it just leaves scars 00:48:20.00\00:48:24.67 and it just leaves unhappiness 00:48:24.87\00:48:27.67 and it just leaves broken relationships 00:48:27.87\00:48:31.87 and it doesn't fulfill 00:48:32.07\00:48:36.48 what it looks like it's going to fulfill. 00:48:36.68\00:48:39.75 It's like an oasis on a desert. 00:48:39.95\00:48:43.25 It may look beautiful and watery... 00:48:43.45\00:48:46.09 It is a moment of pleasure and excitement. 00:48:46.29\00:48:48.72 But once you get there it's empty and you will realize 00:48:49.02\00:48:55.03 that you need the Creator to fill that void 00:48:55.23\00:49:00.14 that we have in our hearts. 00:49:00.34\00:49:02.64 We have a Bible verse if you want to help me read it. 00:49:02.84\00:49:06.71 Psalm 119 verse 9. 00:49:07.11\00:49:13.08 Psalm 119 verse 9. That's right: 00:49:13.38\00:49:16.28 Psalm 119 and verse 9. 00:49:16.48\00:49:21.16 "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his ways? 00:49:21.56\00:49:24.43 By taking heed thereto according to Thy Word. " 00:49:24.63\00:49:29.40 Well, this is the Word. 00:49:29.60\00:49:31.57 This is the Word of God. 00:49:31.77\00:49:33.10 So where does he find it? In the Word of God. 00:49:33.17\00:49:37.77 There we have the secret! 00:49:37.97\00:49:40.48 There are places today in this planet earth 00:49:40.68\00:49:44.95 where the Word of God is not allowed. 00:49:45.15\00:49:46.68 Religious liberty is not there and so forth. 00:49:46.88\00:49:51.35 We have liberty with God. 00:49:51.75\00:49:55.66 We have all these blessings. We need to spend time 00:49:55.86\00:50:00.56 reading His Word, being transformed by His love. 00:50:00.76\00:50:05.13 And I can tell you: the happiness and pleasure 00:50:05.33\00:50:10.11 that God is going to give you... that's the type of happiness 00:50:10.31\00:50:15.51 that will last. Umm. There's another interesting story 00:50:15.71\00:50:19.55 by somebody by the name of Adoniram Judson. 00:50:19.75\00:50:24.25 And he had such a gifted mind. 00:50:24.65\00:50:30.43 He was able to learn Hebrew and Greek 00:50:31.43\00:50:37.63 when he was just 13 years old. 00:50:37.83\00:50:40.50 And he was always the top of his class. 00:50:42.37\00:50:48.34 And he went to one of the first... 00:50:49.28\00:50:54.02 one of the first Christian universities in America. 00:50:54.22\00:50:56.28 This happened in the very beginning stages of the history 00:50:56.48\00:50:59.72 of America. And he went to a university by the name of 00:50:59.92\00:51:03.32 Brown University. I was actually visiting that place 00:51:03.53\00:51:05.73 a few months ago. And in that university - 00:51:05.93\00:51:10.07 it was a Christian institution - 00:51:10.27\00:51:12.13 the talent that he displayed was amazing. 00:51:13.54\00:51:17.41 Yet he started creeping doubts in his heart 00:51:17.61\00:51:23.51 as a result of pride unchecked. 00:51:23.71\00:51:27.85 See, this can happen to every single one of us. 00:51:28.05\00:51:30.45 And those doubts started to give fruit. 00:51:31.35\00:51:34.62 And as he started doubting who God is and so forth 00:51:35.02\00:51:41.00 because he had such a tremendous mind 00:51:41.20\00:51:46.17 when he was debating others 00:51:46.37\00:51:49.40 the others felt that he couldn't do... 00:51:49.80\00:51:54.28 that's right... do against his argument 00:51:54.48\00:51:57.61 because of the tremendous brilliant mind that he had. 00:51:57.81\00:52:01.38 And one of his roommates 00:52:02.45\00:52:05.45 who wanted to actually give his life to the Lord 00:52:05.65\00:52:08.82 and serve Him, when Adoniram Judson started talking 00:52:09.02\00:52:13.06 to him he literally destroyed his faith in God... 00:52:13.26\00:52:18.57 this roommate of him. 00:52:18.77\00:52:20.84 And he also became an agnostic as a result of the negative 00:52:21.00\00:52:26.47 influence of Adoniram Judson. 00:52:26.68\00:52:28.44 He graduates from the university 00:52:29.38\00:52:33.01 and most of his professors were very interested 00:52:33.21\00:52:36.72 to know what was going to happen to this very bright mind 00:52:36.92\00:52:42.46 that they had the privilege of being the teachers and so forth. 00:52:42.66\00:52:46.36 So one day he had an offer for a job in New York, 00:52:47.10\00:52:51.87 so he took the train from Boston to New York. 00:52:52.07\00:52:56.14 There was bad weather so the train couldn't continue. 00:52:56.34\00:53:00.61 He had to go to find a hotel to spend the night. 00:53:00.81\00:53:04.58 And he comes to a hotel 00:53:04.98\00:53:06.68 and in the hotel the person tells him: "Look, 00:53:06.88\00:53:10.89 we are sold out. We don't have a single room. " 00:53:11.09\00:53:14.19 And this man was: "Look, I beg you: I need a room. 00:53:14.39\00:53:17.73 Anything... I can take anything. " 00:53:17.93\00:53:19.76 "OK, I have a room that is next to somebody 00:53:19.96\00:53:24.20 that is about to die. He is just shouting and cursing. 00:53:24.40\00:53:29.50 Would you be willing to stay there? " 00:53:29.70\00:53:32.94 And he said: "Yeah, I'd be happy. 00:53:33.44\00:53:37.31 I'm so desperate; put me there. " 00:53:37.51\00:53:39.71 And sure enough... he went there and he would just hear 00:53:39.91\00:53:42.42 curses and so forth the whole night. 00:53:42.62\00:53:46.72 Suddenly at some point everything became silent. 00:53:46.92\00:53:50.39 Next morning he said: "What happened to that man 00:53:50.59\00:53:52.89 that became silent? " "Oh, he passed away. " 00:53:53.09\00:53:54.93 "What happens when somebody dies in a hotel? " 00:53:55.13\00:53:57.10 "Oh, that's a very interesting question. 00:53:57.30\00:53:58.83 See, his documents... We have to find a close relative 00:53:59.03\00:54:03.44 or a friend or something. " 00:54:03.64\00:54:05.07 And he saw the name. It was the roommate 00:54:05.27\00:54:08.31 that he had destroyed his faith. 00:54:08.51\00:54:10.91 And he continues on his pathway now on a horse. 00:54:12.08\00:54:16.52 And he could hear in his head: 00:54:16.72\00:54:19.59 "Sin... hell... sin... hell... " 00:54:19.99\00:54:25.23 at every step of that horse. 00:54:25.43\00:54:27.30 He knew that his influence had destroyed his life. 00:54:27.50\00:54:31.97 And that brilliant man at that point 00:54:32.60\00:54:35.80 went and humbled before the Lord 00:54:36.00\00:54:38.94 in the field asking for forgiveness. 00:54:39.14\00:54:42.81 And the Lord forgave him. 00:54:43.01\00:54:44.98 And he became the first missionary to Cambodia. 00:54:45.18\00:54:49.48 His bright mind continued to be a blessing. 00:54:49.68\00:54:53.62 He did the first translation of the Bible 00:54:53.82\00:54:58.23 in the Burmese language. 00:54:58.43\00:55:00.66 There was no religious liberty there. 00:55:01.06\00:55:03.47 He got in trouble for preaching. 00:55:03.67\00:55:05.40 It took him 16 years for the first baptism to take place. 00:55:05.60\00:55:10.61 And as a result of that 00:55:11.47\00:55:14.21 he ended up being imprisoned 00:55:14.41\00:55:17.15 and he died on the way to America. 00:55:17.35\00:55:20.42 That's an incredible story! 00:55:20.62\00:55:21.98 We're going to have just a few moments to put up your address 00:55:22.18\00:55:24.49 roll. You know, Dr. Eddie, it just 00:56:33.76\00:56:36.73 shows that God can still humble us 00:56:36.93\00:56:39.13 right at the end of our life 00:56:39.33\00:56:40.70 and we can be turned around and still be used by Him. 00:56:41.10\00:56:44.13 That's important. Do you have a closing thought for us? 00:56:44.33\00:56:47.10 Yeah, we can walk 1,000 steps 00:56:47.30\00:56:51.41 away from the Lord - 00:56:51.61\00:56:53.54 um-hmm - but it just takes one step back 00:56:53.74\00:56:58.08 to get back to Him. 00:56:58.28\00:56:59.91 To change the whole life! He is waiting for you. 00:57:00.12\00:57:02.68 He is willing to forgive, 00:57:02.88\00:57:05.79 to repair our relationship with Him 00:57:05.99\00:57:08.82 and have those fruits of the Spirit 00:57:09.02\00:57:13.06 that He has promised to us. 00:57:13.26\00:57:15.96 So even if you have done very wrong 00:57:16.16\00:57:19.27 God can regenerate. 00:57:19.47\00:57:22.17 As long as we have life we have hope. 00:57:22.37\00:57:25.51 I think that's a wonderful thought to close with. 00:57:25.71\00:57:27.84 Thank you, Dr. Eddie, for coming on the program. 00:57:28.04\00:57:30.15 I enjoyed the thoughts that you expressed. 00:57:30.35\00:57:33.75 And in particular, you know, what's in our heart? 00:57:33.95\00:57:37.02 If we have Christ in our heart, then we have an opportunity 00:57:37.22\00:57:39.89 to think of others... not of ourselves. 00:57:40.09\00:57:42.09 May God bless you until next time. 00:57:42.29\00:57:44.23
