Good evening, we're coming to you tonight 00:00:26.45\00:00:28.45 from the campus of Southern Adventist University. 00:00:28.48\00:00:31.79 It's a beautiful campus, isn't it C.A.? 00:00:31.82\00:00:34.13 It is really a gorgeous campus 00:00:34.16\00:00:35.68 and the weather has been great and the meetings thus far 00:00:35.71\00:00:39.21 that we're here for, we'll talk about 00:00:39.24\00:00:40.61 that little bit have been great also. Yes. 00:00:40.64\00:00:42.01 And we're just glad to be at Southern. 00:00:42.04\00:00:44.08 We really are. 00:00:44.11\00:00:45.48 This is a place that has a great deal of history 00:00:45.51\00:00:48.57 and a place particularly that we as 3ABN feel very close too. 00:00:48.60\00:00:53.67 Because two of our founding board members, 00:00:53.70\00:00:57.91 first board of directors are from this area. 00:00:57.94\00:01:02.26 Ellsworth McKee, the former president 00:01:02.29\00:01:05.47 retired now of Mickey Foods and Bill Hulsey, 00:01:05.50\00:01:09.87 who had a large business here 00:01:09.90\00:01:11.72 in the cabinet manufacturing business for number of years. 00:01:11.75\00:01:15.70 And these men serves very faithfully 00:01:15.73\00:01:18.58 and still serve on our board. 00:01:18.61\00:01:20.55 Although Bill is now emeritus, 00:01:20.58\00:01:22.92 but Ellsworth McKee still comes 00:01:22.95\00:01:25.86 and is a part of the 3ABN Board of Directors. 00:01:25.89\00:01:29.69 I saw, Jim, as we're driving and I saw a building, 00:01:29.72\00:01:32.04 the Hulsey Wellness Center for health. That's right. 00:01:32.07\00:01:34.34 And I suspect that's named after the Hulsey's. Absolutely. Yeah. 00:01:34.37\00:01:37.98 The Hulsey family has been very generous with this university. 00:01:38.01\00:01:42.56 And this is a university that has grown over 3,000 students. 00:01:42.59\00:01:46.38 And tonight we saw a great number of them, 00:01:46.41\00:01:50.12 even though this was test week. 00:01:50.15\00:01:52.77 There was a ton of young people here 00:01:52.80\00:01:56.72 and enjoying the ultimate purpose 00:01:56.75\00:01:59.88 which we'll be talking about little bit later on. 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.65 And I hope that most of you probably saw 00:02:02.68\00:02:05.86 the ultimate purpose tonight and you were blessed 00:02:05.89\00:02:08.81 as we were blessed by the message 00:02:08.84\00:02:11.62 that Pastor Doug Batchelor brought to us. 00:02:11.65\00:02:13.70 Yeah, and Doug is gonna be with us in just a little bit. 00:02:13.73\00:02:15.63 We've got the president Dr. Bietz, 00:02:15.66\00:02:17.76 and we're gonna talk with him. 00:02:17.79\00:02:19.16 Steven Roof, Doug Batchelor, so we're gonna talk about 00:02:19.19\00:02:21.84 a number of things tonight as we're here on this campus, 00:02:21.87\00:02:23.80 take advantage of being in the academic setting. 00:02:23.83\00:02:25.80 We got a dotter, was it cross our T's and dot our I's 00:02:25.83\00:02:28.90 and speak correctly now that we're back on campus, Jim. 00:02:28.93\00:02:30.65 Absolutely, and sort of behave ourselves, 00:02:30.68\00:02:34.03 if that's possible. If that's possible. 00:02:34.06\00:02:36.49 Right, right. Yes, indeed. 00:02:36.52\00:02:37.89 We enjoy the Night Light program because the Night Light program 00:02:37.92\00:02:41.32 is different from anything that we do. 00:02:41.35\00:02:44.39 We talk about some of the current issues 00:02:44.42\00:02:47.31 that are facing Christians around the world, 00:02:47.34\00:02:50.25 that are facing Seventh-day Adventist in particular. 00:02:50.28\00:02:53.16 We've talked at times about creation, evolution. 00:02:53.19\00:02:56.91 We will touch on some other subjects tonight 00:02:56.94\00:03:00.30 that may be somewhat controversial. 00:03:00.33\00:03:03.05 Well, please understand and occasionally 00:03:03.08\00:03:05.39 we do get letters from people saying, 00:03:05.42\00:03:07.51 well, you seem to be taking one side or the other, 00:03:07.54\00:03:09.69 in most instances we try to be very fair. Very true. 00:03:09.72\00:03:13.03 And let us many different opinions 00:03:13.06\00:03:15.97 be offered as we feel are reasonable. 00:03:16.00\00:03:19.51 Now, we've always felt that the burden 00:03:19.54\00:03:22.50 of Night Light is to just shine light on a subject. 00:03:22.53\00:03:25.00 That's right. Pro, con whatever 00:03:25.03\00:03:26.76 to help you make your decision because 00:03:26.79\00:03:28.16 as we sort of walk this road that leads to glory. 00:03:28.19\00:03:30.58 There are number of things that the church is facing has faced, 00:03:30.61\00:03:33.60 will face again as we move through time 00:03:33.63\00:03:37.56 that we need to talk about that. 00:03:37.59\00:03:38.97 We need to sensitize the church body too in the world 00:03:39.00\00:03:42.65 and in the church and that's what Night Light 00:03:42.68\00:03:44.18 was designed to do, to bring these subjects to light 00:03:44.21\00:03:48.25 and to discuss them, so that the people of God 00:03:48.28\00:03:50.62 are informed and made aware. 00:03:50.65\00:03:52.49 You know, some of you realize and remember 00:03:52.52\00:03:54.71 that Night Light began in 2010, in Atlanta, Georgia. 00:03:54.74\00:03:59.93 This was at the General Conference session. 00:03:59.96\00:04:02.82 We were there night after night and we had two sessions. 00:04:02.85\00:04:06.63 We had an earlier session that we did 00:04:06.66\00:04:08.86 when it was unbelievably hot. 00:04:08.89\00:04:11.44 And then we had a later session that we did 00:04:11.47\00:04:14.44 after meeting each night. 00:04:14.47\00:04:15.84 We did it live and it was at least somewhat cooler. 00:04:15.87\00:04:19.85 But we were on the hill overlooking the Georgia Dome 00:04:19.88\00:04:25.07 and with a beautiful view of the skyline of Atlanta, Georgia. 00:04:25.10\00:04:30.15 And it was in that setting that the whole concept 00:04:30.18\00:04:34.54 began of this type of program. 00:04:34.57\00:04:37.41 We don't just do Night Light's all the time, 00:04:37.44\00:04:39.23 we do it when we're in a special place. 00:04:39.26\00:04:40.96 This week we are here on the campus 00:04:40.99\00:04:43.63 of Southern Adventist University. 00:04:43.66\00:04:45.68 Next week we're going to be at Oakwood University, 00:04:45.71\00:04:50.05 in Huntsville, Alabama. 00:04:50.08\00:04:52.31 And also next week there will be an Anchors of Truth, 00:04:52.34\00:04:56.38 it will be Anchors Away, it will be in Huntsville 00:04:56.41\00:05:01.08 and we'll have different speaker every night. 00:05:01.11\00:05:04.29 That is going to be very interesting anchors 00:05:04.32\00:05:08.51 coming from Oakwood, lot of good music. 00:05:08.54\00:05:11.68 What's the name of the choir? The Aliens. 00:05:11.71\00:05:14.11 They're going to be singing for us. They will be singing. 00:05:14.14\00:05:15.62 University choir, a number of groups are going to be there. 00:05:15.65\00:05:18.54 So you want to look forward to that. 00:05:18.57\00:05:19.94 I need to thank you, man, for something. 00:05:19.97\00:05:22.18 What's that? I'll do it on public television. 00:05:22.21\00:05:25.15 I had a surgical procedure just some weeks ago 00:05:25.18\00:05:28.65 right after our camp meeting. 00:05:28.68\00:05:30.05 As many of you know, we were suffering from prostate cancer, 00:05:30.08\00:05:34.43 had gone out to Eden Valley and really changed lifestyle, 00:05:34.46\00:05:39.28 eating habits and arrested it but didn't cure. 00:05:39.31\00:05:42.04 And the doctors finally said, 00:05:42.07\00:05:43.44 well, you've go to deal with it, 00:05:43.47\00:05:44.99 so we had successful surgery. 00:05:45.02\00:05:46.77 The pathology report was excellent. 00:05:46.80\00:05:49.18 The cancer is all gone and we are praising the Lord. 00:05:49.21\00:05:51.59 But the first face I saw when I came 00:05:51.62\00:05:54.19 out of surgery was that of Jim Gilley. 00:05:54.22\00:05:57.81 You know, you are undern, you wake up 00:05:57.84\00:05:59.21 and this is the face that you see. 00:05:59.24\00:06:00.93 Oh, man, that's enough to make you wanna go back to sleep. 00:06:00.96\00:06:04.84 But I will not tell you all the things 00:06:04.87\00:06:07.06 he said to me at that particular time. 00:06:07.09\00:06:08.93 And I deny every one of them. 00:06:08.96\00:06:10.33 I was under anesthetic, I'm not responsible. 00:06:10.36\00:06:12.10 I did tell him I loved him. 00:06:12.13\00:06:13.75 Yeah, that was the first time. 00:06:13.78\00:06:15.20 Yeah. Then the next thing he said, 00:06:15.23\00:06:17.51 I don't even like you. 00:06:17.54\00:06:18.91 So we had a great time. 00:06:18.94\00:06:21.93 He doesn't recall any of that at least he says he doesn't-- 00:06:21.96\00:06:24.90 Selective memory, I just, I don't recall any of that, 00:06:24.93\00:06:26.84 I admit to nothing. Yeah. 00:06:26.87\00:06:28.26 But it's good to have friends who are praying for you 00:06:28.29\00:06:30.36 and I want to thank all of those who did pray. 00:06:30.39\00:06:32.28 J.D. and Shelley Quinn came and stayed with my wife 00:06:32.31\00:06:34.42 Irma while we were in surgery. 00:06:34.45\00:06:35.82 Jim and Camille were in the room when we came out 00:06:35.85\00:06:37.79 and God is good, things are working well. 00:06:37.82\00:06:40.13 But we mentioned this because of this reason. 00:06:40.16\00:06:42.70 Even today I was talking with some individuals 00:06:42.73\00:06:46.12 who are facing that prospect and many times 00:06:46.15\00:06:51.51 I don't know what happens with those guys, 00:06:51.54\00:06:53.01 sometimes when we hear certain words 00:06:53.04\00:06:54.57 we kind of shy away from it. 00:06:54.60\00:06:56.09 Even next week I'm going to be talking 00:06:56.12\00:06:57.60 with a person whose numbers are rising 00:06:57.63\00:06:59.77 but just doesn't want to do anything. 00:06:59.80\00:07:01.71 And, gentlemen, I would say to you 00:07:01.74\00:07:03.67 and I have talked with many, many, many men 00:07:03.70\00:07:05.86 in the years that had the cancer. 00:07:05.89\00:07:09.39 Get to a good doctor, get to a Christian doctor. 00:07:09.42\00:07:12.24 Pray way through, don't be paralyzed by fear. 00:07:12.27\00:07:16.28 Get the treatment, do what you have to do. 00:07:16.31\00:07:18.92 Trust God, you know, we talk about trusting God. 00:07:18.95\00:07:21.20 We go to church, we pray, we sing. 00:07:21.23\00:07:23.19 There are times when you got to sort of cash 00:07:23.22\00:07:24.83 in on that relationship. 00:07:24.86\00:07:26.36 This may be for you one of those times. 00:07:26.39\00:07:29.26 Trust the Lord and move forward. 00:07:29.29\00:07:30.93 Don't be paralyzed but fear-- by fear but trust the Lord 00:07:30.96\00:07:34.30 and get the kind of medical help that you deserve. 00:07:34.33\00:07:37.27 And God will indeed be with you. 00:07:37.30\00:07:38.84 You had a major surgery some years ago. 00:07:38.87\00:07:40.69 That's right. Open heart surgery and God is with you. 00:07:40.72\00:07:42.68 And very definitely so and what a difference 00:07:42.71\00:07:46.00 life has been for me after that. 00:07:46.03\00:07:48.64 You know, amazing thing, you sometimes want to procrastinate. 00:07:48.67\00:07:51.41 Yeah. I procrastinated that surgery 00:07:51.44\00:07:54.65 until the doctor said, you've reached 00:07:54.68\00:07:57.05 the end of procrastination. 00:07:57.08\00:07:59.31 You procrastinate another three months 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.38 and you will not be alive. Uh-huh. 00:08:01.41\00:08:03.48 Now, there comes a time, gentlemen, 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.81 when procrastination has to end. 00:08:05.84\00:08:09.69 And if you are facing something like this, 00:08:09.72\00:08:11.97 we encourage you to do something about. 00:08:12.00\00:08:14.86 It's amazing, C.A. we want to procrastinate good things. Yes. 00:08:20.84\00:08:24.21 We'll do something quickly 00:08:24.24\00:08:26.28 that we will regret the rest of our lives sometimes. 00:08:26.31\00:08:29.61 But I'm urging you to do what you need to do and to seek 00:08:29.64\00:08:35.30 the medical help that you need to seek. 00:08:35.33\00:08:37.30 And C.A. knows, he's been talking to several people 00:08:37.33\00:08:40.47 individually and some of you're watching tonight. 00:08:40.50\00:08:43.68 And we know that you do need to make this decision. 00:08:43.71\00:08:48.29 In fact we have a guy right behind that camera 00:08:48.32\00:08:50.77 that may be thinking about this decision. 00:08:50.80\00:08:54.12 Yeah, we have that conversation --that's right-- 00:08:54.15\00:08:55.81 Lucas one of our great volunteers 00:08:55.84\00:08:57.93 on camera tonight. Indeed you do? 00:11:59.62\00:12:02.05 And I have known this man for a number of years 00:12:02.08\00:12:05.74 and we're going to invite Gordon Bietz, Dr. Gordon Bietz, 00:12:05.77\00:12:09.85 the President of Southern Adventist University 00:12:09.88\00:12:12.00 to come and to join us here at Night Light 00:12:12.03\00:12:15.86 at this particular time. Dr. Bietz, welcome. 00:12:15.89\00:12:19.03 We're happy to have you with us. 00:12:19.06\00:12:22.08 Good to see you. Okay. Okay. 00:12:22.11\00:12:25.58 Well, thanks very much. Well, this is a beautiful campus. 00:12:25.61\00:12:28.04 Absolutely. And we've noticed that a lot of changes, 00:12:28.07\00:12:34.07 every time I come by here, there's something new, 00:12:34.10\00:12:37.58 something taking place. Yeah. 00:12:37.61\00:12:40.74 I just noticed even today that you moved 00:12:40.77\00:12:43.26 your radio station to another location. 00:12:43.29\00:12:46.34 We've doubled our enrolment in the last 00:12:46.37\00:12:49.24 number of years, about 14 years. 00:12:49.27\00:12:51.74 There are 3,300 students now. 00:12:51.77\00:12:53.62 3300--Praise God. Praise God. 00:12:53.65\00:12:55.59 And that requires dormitory space and renovation of housing, 00:12:55.62\00:12:58.55 and more class rooms, and teacher's offices. 00:12:58.58\00:13:01.20 Wow. So there's a lot of construction going on. 00:13:01.23\00:13:03.36 Yeah, it really is. Let's get some history. 00:13:03.39\00:13:05.01 How old is the campus, 00:13:05.04\00:13:06.41 how long have you been on this particular footprint? 00:13:06.44\00:13:08.32 Just a little history of the school itself. 00:13:08.35\00:13:10.16 I was afraid you're gonna ask me how old I was? 00:13:10.19\00:13:12.07 That's why I was little concern there you said how old. 00:13:12.10\00:13:14.67 How old is the campus? 00:13:14.70\00:13:16.07 1912, it's when we moved here from Graceville 00:13:16.10\00:13:19.92 and from Graceville it was in 1892 00:13:19.95\00:13:22.80 when the campus was kind of founded. 00:13:22.83\00:13:25.45 But they came to this location purchasing a farm in about 1912. 00:13:25.48\00:13:30.21 So it's been here, well, 100 years or so. All right. 00:13:30.24\00:13:33.86 Now, when did McKee Foods move 00:13:33.89\00:13:36.32 into this general area, did you know. 00:13:36.35\00:13:38.44 I think that was in the early 50s' and the plant 00:13:38.47\00:13:42.04 that they operated on our campus, 00:13:42.07\00:13:43.74 we actually built for them and its only this year 00:13:43.77\00:13:47.31 that they finally vacated that plant 00:13:47.34\00:13:49.02 and they are moving to more efficient facilities 00:13:49.05\00:13:52.12 but they've been connected with the university for many years. 00:13:52.15\00:13:56.35 Yes. I think they've moved here primarily 00:13:56.38\00:13:59.55 to take advantage of student labor and so forth. Yeah. 00:13:59.58\00:14:03.83 In doing the baking. Yeah. 00:14:03.86\00:14:05.88 Well, the Lord has certainly blessed 00:14:05.91\00:14:07.95 that organization and I first became acquainted with them 00:14:07.98\00:14:12.21 in 1960, in fact just at the time when they started 00:14:12.24\00:14:16.07 using the brand name Little Debbie. 00:14:16.10\00:14:18.65 And my father-in-law, Roy Thurman 00:14:18.68\00:14:21.64 was the pastor here at that time. 00:14:21.67\00:14:23.55 And in fact he was the pastor when they brought the church. 00:14:23.58\00:14:29.36 Yes. As you know? That's right. As you pastored that church. 00:14:29.39\00:14:31.13 Yes, I pastured, it began in 1981. 00:14:31.16\00:14:33.52 Okay. And then you went from there to be president of the-- 00:14:33.55\00:14:37.97 I pastored the church for 13 years 00:14:38.00\00:14:39.77 and was President of the Georgia Cumberland Conference 00:14:39.80\00:14:41.94 for three and then for 15 years 00:14:41.97\00:14:44.30 now I've been with the university. 00:14:44.33\00:14:45.70 At the university. 00:14:45.73\00:14:47.10 And now tell us a little bit about yourself. 00:14:47.13\00:14:49.98 Where are you from originally and your father? 00:14:50.01\00:14:52.57 Well, my father R.R. Bietz was Union President 00:14:52.60\00:14:56.66 in the Pacific Union and then a General Conference 00:14:56.69\00:14:59.01 Vice President for a while. Okay. 00:14:59.04\00:15:00.92 Past away few years ago at 99. 00:15:00.95\00:15:03.05 Wow. So I'm hoping I've good genes. Yes. 00:15:03.08\00:15:07.01 But I grew up in California when my dad was out 00:15:07.04\00:15:10.14 there pastored in Northern California, 00:15:10.17\00:15:12.16 all of my ministry until we moved back here. 00:15:12.19\00:15:14.94 Gary Patterson invited me back here 00:15:14.97\00:15:17.47 to pastor the Collegedale Church. 00:15:17.50\00:15:19.84 So we lived in the same house for over 30 years. 00:15:19.87\00:15:21.84 Is that right? And, you know, we need a fire or a move 00:15:21.87\00:15:25.37 'cause we filled our house out with-- 00:15:25.40\00:15:28.35 And that in the circles 30 years in the same house 00:15:28.38\00:15:30.20 as he is way to accomplishment. 00:15:30.23\00:15:31.72 Yeah, as a pastor, yeah that's amazing. 00:15:31.75\00:15:33.91 I think you and Max Trevino 00:15:33.94\00:15:35.33 probably may have hold the record. 00:15:35.36\00:15:36.82 May be, that's possible. Between the two of you. 00:15:36.85\00:15:38.85 But, so you have been president here, 00:15:38.88\00:15:42.38 you've seen this university grow, 00:15:42.41\00:15:44.95 in fact you saw it changed from college to a university. 00:15:44.98\00:15:48.66 That happened just about the time I became president. 00:15:48.69\00:15:51.23 Okay. And then you had a--how many members about, I mean-- 00:15:51.26\00:15:55.49 Well, about 1,500, 1,400 students at that time. 00:15:55.52\00:15:59.29 And has 3,300 students today. 00:15:59.32\00:16:02.58 Well, that's just fantastic. 00:16:02.61\00:16:04.31 What are some of the majors that you offer, 00:16:04.34\00:16:06.45 you know, and beyond the college level. 00:16:06.48\00:16:08.82 Well, the primary masters degrees that we have. 00:16:08.85\00:16:11.55 We're starting a Computer Science Master's Degree 00:16:11.58\00:16:13.86 actually right now this fall. 00:16:13.89\00:16:16.86 And so that will be another one that we're adding, 00:16:16.89\00:16:18.81 but we have Master's of Education, 00:16:18.84\00:16:20.91 of course Master's in Religion. 00:16:20.94\00:16:23.81 We have Master's in Social Work. 00:16:23.84\00:16:25.74 And we have some others that I'm not thinking of right now. 00:16:25.77\00:16:31.13 Okay, all right. 00:16:31.16\00:16:33.32 Well, listen, you have been here for a little while, 00:16:33.35\00:16:37.58 what are some of the major challenges 00:16:37.61\00:16:41.02 that a university such as Southern faces? 00:16:41.05\00:16:44.63 Can you imagine 3,300 children from 3,300 different homes, 00:16:44.66\00:16:50.65 with 3,300 different value systems. Yeah. 00:16:50.68\00:16:55.04 And bringing them together on a campus 00:16:55.07\00:16:57.12 and seeking to bring conservative coherence 00:16:57.15\00:17:01.27 of Seventh-day Adventist lifestyle and so forth, 00:17:01.30\00:17:03.75 that's a challenge. It is. 00:17:03.78\00:17:05.96 It's a challenge. Fortunately I believe our institution 00:17:05.99\00:17:09.54 attracts a genre of student that is committed 00:17:09.57\00:17:14.62 to the kind of ministry that we seek to provide. 00:17:14.65\00:17:17.27 Praise God. And they create a peer group 00:17:17.30\00:17:19.64 that encourages other students. 00:17:19.67\00:17:22.88 And so I think we have created a really positive atmosphere 00:17:22.91\00:17:26.61 that upholds Seventh-day Adventist standards and values. 00:17:26.64\00:17:29.74 So you have a nucleus of students 00:17:29.77\00:17:32.81 that really kind of hold the concept together? 00:17:32.84\00:17:37.13 In reality I think the culture of the institution is determined 00:17:37.16\00:17:42.15 as much by the students as it is by 00:17:42.18\00:17:44.08 the faculty and staff. 00:17:44.11\00:17:45.87 And so we attract those kinds of students, 00:17:45.90\00:17:47.72 so they built the culture. 00:17:47.75\00:17:49.12 We have over a 100 student missionaries, 00:17:49.15\00:17:51.65 you know, they come back every year having gone 00:17:51.68\00:17:54.15 the student missionaries 00:17:54.18\00:17:55.79 and they help create that culture. 00:17:55.82\00:17:58.48 We have 300 students this year applied 00:17:58.51\00:18:02.19 to do Share Him evangelistic crusades. 00:18:02.22\00:18:04.48 Oh, praise God. Next summer and we can't handle that many. 00:18:04.51\00:18:07.86 Wow. But we will send out a lot of students 00:18:07.89\00:18:10.91 to do Share Him evangelistic campaigns. 00:18:10.94\00:18:13.28 They come back, they have that excitement and that enthusiasm. 00:18:13.31\00:18:16.68 And so they really create the atmosphere 00:18:16.71\00:18:18.76 and ambience on the campus, 00:18:18.79\00:18:20.64 I think that's a real positive asset. 00:18:20.67\00:18:22.53 You know, you said a couple of terms 00:18:22.56\00:18:24.19 that sort of just resonated in my head. 00:18:24.22\00:18:26.46 First of all you said conservative approach 00:18:26.49\00:18:28.74 to learning and to the Adventist culture 00:18:28.77\00:18:31.94 if I can use the terminology. 00:18:31.97\00:18:33.34 When we think of Southern, you brought my step son 00:18:33.37\00:18:35.37 here several years ago. 00:18:35.40\00:18:37.55 And he was-- he now works at 3ABN 00:18:37.58\00:18:40.99 and perhaps in all departments, so you got him straight. 00:18:41.02\00:18:43.28 But he was in that position should I, should I not, 00:18:43.31\00:18:46.44 kind of marginal. Yeah. 00:18:46.47\00:18:48.05 Knowing about the Lord, 00:18:48.08\00:18:49.45 but not really having a personal one on one relationship 00:18:49.48\00:18:51.13 and it was in his two years here that we saw a right turn, 00:18:51.16\00:18:56.86 as we say left turn but actually right turn. 00:18:56.89\00:18:58.94 So there was something even then about the culture of the school 00:18:58.97\00:19:01.59 and the kinds of students you were then attracting 00:19:01.62\00:19:03.79 and are now attracting that seem to give 00:19:03.82\00:19:06.22 a flavor of, we're coming here to learn about the Lord, 00:19:06.25\00:19:10.52 to learn the Lord for ourselves 00:19:10.55\00:19:11.92 and then go out to serve the Lord. 00:19:11.95\00:19:13.32 So that is a credit to what you're doing 00:19:13.35\00:19:14.75 and the kinds of students that this college, 00:19:14.78\00:19:17.09 this university seems to attract. 00:19:17.12\00:19:18.82 There is a significant study done by man 00:19:18.85\00:19:22.41 named Austin entitled "The Four Critical Years" 00:19:22.44\00:19:25.05 who indicates that the single most determining factor 00:19:25.08\00:19:29.21 in values, development, 00:19:29.24\00:19:30.96 for a 18 to 22-year-old is the peer group. Agreed. 00:19:30.99\00:19:34.60 That they associate with. 00:19:34.63\00:19:36.00 Exactly. You develop the kind of peer group 00:19:36.03\00:19:38.16 that builds spiritual Christian Seventh-day Adventist 00:19:38.19\00:19:42.45 values and other kids go along, it builds. 00:19:42.48\00:19:47.38 I pay you then this compliment because some of our best 00:19:47.41\00:19:50.02 at 3ABN have sat in this hall, we got. Yeah. 00:19:50.05\00:19:53.15 I'm gonna miss somebody Michael Yang and Joe Baker, 00:19:53.18\00:19:56.03 you got Nicole, Kai Warren, Ariel, probably we gonna leave 00:19:56.06\00:20:00.11 somebody out but everybody we've gotten from you 00:20:00.14\00:20:02.79 have been really fine workers and they've come 00:20:02.82\00:20:05.27 with a working relationship with Jesus Christ, so we want more. 00:20:05.30\00:20:07.99 If you got some more, send us we'll take them. 00:20:08.02\00:20:09.39 Well, they're all looking for jobs. 00:20:09.42\00:20:11.71 In fact we have an intern beginning right now 00:20:11.74\00:20:13.83 that's just coming from here. 00:20:13.86\00:20:15.24 Well, interestingly enough today I was talking to the managing, 00:20:15.27\00:20:20.21 well, I don't know if he is a manager 00:20:20.24\00:20:21.76 but he is an employee of the local NBC affiliate. 00:20:21.79\00:20:25.49 They were out here recruiting students as interns 00:20:25.52\00:20:28.83 and one of the gentlemen said that when they get a application 00:20:28.86\00:20:33.40 from someone from Southern Adventist University, 00:20:33.43\00:20:35.32 it goes to the top of the pile right away. 00:20:35.35\00:20:36.86 Oh, praise God. Because the students from Southern 00:20:36.89\00:20:39.49 are just great, great students. 00:20:39.52\00:20:42.03 Yeah, that must make you feel really good about 00:20:42.06\00:20:44.52 what you're doing and the kind of products you're turning out. 00:20:44.55\00:20:46.41 Right, absolutely right. 00:20:46.44\00:20:47.81 You know, one of the questions that a lot of people 00:20:47.84\00:20:50.99 are asking today is, where does this campus stand 00:20:51.02\00:20:55.70 on the teaching of creation and evolution? 00:20:55.73\00:20:59.18 As you and all of us know, there have been some of our schools 00:20:59.21\00:21:03.43 that where there has been talk other than 00:21:03.46\00:21:07.76 a literal six day creation. 00:21:07.79\00:21:10.96 What has been the position of Southern? 00:21:10.99\00:21:14.57 All of our faculty and our biology department 00:21:14.60\00:21:18.27 in particular are very committed to the, the creation, 00:21:18.30\00:21:23.99 fiat creation and the non-evolutionary 00:21:24.02\00:21:27.55 approach to a microevolution but that God 00:21:27.58\00:21:31.18 called everything into being. 00:21:31.21\00:21:33.11 We have every Friday, in fact today a group met, 00:21:33.14\00:21:35.97 the biology teachers and the religion faculty 00:21:36.00\00:21:40.67 meet together every Friday for a sack lunch 00:21:40.70\00:21:42.74 to discuss these issues. 00:21:42.77\00:21:44.50 And they have ongoing conversations about it. 00:21:44.53\00:21:47.08 We have actually on the biology floor in our biology building, 00:21:47.11\00:21:52.76 we've built a museum 00:21:52.79\00:21:54.26 to illustrate intelligent design. 00:21:54.29\00:21:56.85 So as students go in, they can be inundated 00:21:56.88\00:22:00.23 in a sense by the approach of the intelligent design. 00:22:00.26\00:22:04.09 Do you think that perhaps some of the growth 00:22:04.12\00:22:06.84 that you had in recent years may have been as a result 00:22:06.87\00:22:10.58 of people knowing they can safely send 00:22:10.61\00:22:13.15 their young people to this university? 00:22:13.18\00:22:15.03 I think that's part of it, certainly. 00:22:15.06\00:22:16.99 And there are some places where right now 00:22:17.02\00:22:21.13 they don't feel as safe about sending them. 00:22:21.16\00:22:24.24 Yes, and I don't want to be critical 00:22:24.27\00:22:27.21 of some of the other institutions. 00:22:27.24\00:22:28.77 There are different approaches. 00:22:28.80\00:22:31.26 There are different needs in some parts 00:22:31.29\00:22:33.66 of the country as well. 00:22:33.69\00:22:35.14 And I think they all are seeking 00:22:35.17\00:22:36.94 to in their best way serve their constituency. 00:22:36.97\00:22:40.32 But I think your point is well taken that we do have 00:22:40.35\00:22:42.74 a attraction for parents who are looking for, 00:22:42.77\00:22:46.80 I think more conservative approach. 00:22:46.83\00:22:48.29 I know that my children are now educated 00:22:48.32\00:22:50.78 and I'm looking towards grandchildren. Yeah. 00:22:50.81\00:22:53.18 And their education, but I'll assure you of one thing 00:22:53.21\00:22:56.82 that I would strongly encourage my grandchildren 00:22:56.85\00:23:02.53 to be in a program where they don't have to fight against 00:23:02.56\00:23:07.32 a teachings that are other than what our church believes. 00:23:07.35\00:23:12.25 And particularly a Sabbath keeping group 00:23:12.28\00:23:14.68 such as Seventh-day Adventist to teach other than 00:23:14.71\00:23:19.31 the Seventh-day literal creation. 00:23:19.34\00:23:22.62 We--are all of a sudden totally out of our philosophy 00:23:22.65\00:23:26.89 of where we even-- why we even exist? 00:23:26.92\00:23:30.21 And so I would--I think that rather than taking a chance 00:23:30.24\00:23:36.70 on sending my child in an environment 00:23:36.73\00:23:41.04 where they're saying, well, let's examine 00:23:41.07\00:23:43.75 this or let's examine that. 00:23:43.78\00:23:45.66 I would rather send him to where they say, 00:23:45.69\00:23:48.39 this is what we believe and they stand by what we believe. 00:23:48.42\00:23:51.55 And I think most parents feel that way 00:23:51.58\00:23:53.30 and that's why they have faith in you here. 00:23:53.33\00:23:56.23 I do think it's also important for us 00:23:56.26\00:23:58.79 to teach evolution, to teach the issues. 00:23:58.82\00:24:02.99 For them to know what it is. 00:24:03.02\00:24:04.39 To know what it's about. 00:24:04.42\00:24:05.79 And to be able to comeback. 00:24:05.82\00:24:07.19 To be able to deal with it. 00:24:07.22\00:24:08.59 That's right. Because I think that if they don't confront 00:24:08.62\00:24:12.01 some of those issues in the supportive environment. 00:24:12.04\00:24:15.49 Right. They'll be blown away 00:24:15.52\00:24:16.89 when they go outside of that environment. Exactly, exactly. 00:24:16.92\00:24:18.74 And so we do and have on occasion brought in actually 00:24:18.77\00:24:22.22 an evolutionist teacher to present his opinion to a class 00:24:22.25\00:24:29.20 and then have conversation with the students 00:24:29.23\00:24:31.20 after that and discuss that. 00:24:31.23\00:24:32.60 I've mentioned this before on the air 00:24:32.63\00:24:34.45 but when Richard Dawkins was on with Bill O'Reilly 00:24:34.48\00:24:40.56 they had a series of discussions on Bill O'Reilly's program. 00:24:40.59\00:24:44.83 And when it came down at the end, 00:24:44.86\00:24:47.73 O'Reilly said to Dawkins, you have not convinced me 00:24:47.76\00:24:52.69 and what is more I see that evolutionists all disagree 00:24:52.72\00:24:57.72 with each other on the amount of time and on the methods, 00:24:57.75\00:25:00.62 and what happened, and this and that. 00:25:00.65\00:25:02.65 And he said, you know, until you fellows get this thing together, 00:25:02.68\00:25:05.92 I'm gonna stick with the biblical account. 00:25:05.95\00:25:08.74 And I think that it is good for our young people to know, 00:25:08.77\00:25:15.92 but also to have the answers as to why these don't hold water. 00:25:15.95\00:25:22.06 You know, one of my arguments in a sense for the six day creation 00:25:22.09\00:25:28.76 is that Jesus is very clear that He doesn't spend 00:25:28.79\00:25:33.47 two million years recreating me. Right. 00:25:33.50\00:25:35.88 When the resurrection comes. That's right. 00:25:35.91\00:25:37.67 When the resurrection comes I want it now. Yeah. 00:25:37.70\00:25:39.75 Yes, sir. And Jesus also said, 00:25:39.78\00:25:42.43 "If it were not so I would have told you." Yeah. Yeah. 00:25:42.46\00:25:45.85 And He had every opportunity to tell us that creation 00:25:45.88\00:25:49.65 was not so and He never did. 00:25:49.68\00:25:51.64 In fact He seem to put His stamp 00:25:51.67\00:25:54.50 of approval on it. Absolutely. At every step. 00:25:54.53\00:25:56.84 So if you believe in Jesus, then and you believe 00:25:56.87\00:26:00.12 that the Ten Commandments was written by the finger of God. 00:26:00.15\00:26:03.23 You have ample biblical information there to face you-- 00:26:03.26\00:26:08.02 While you were here I would encourage you to go 00:26:08.05\00:26:09.90 through the museum, it's very fascinating. 00:26:09.93\00:26:12.37 Yeah. We have a great museum over there that illustrates 00:26:12.40\00:26:15.01 the importance and the-- intelligent design issues. 00:26:15.04\00:26:18.55 Yeah, I want to get back to something that Jim talked about 00:26:18.58\00:26:20.72 just a little bit ago because you've been here now 15 years 00:26:20.75\00:26:23.80 as president and each position 00:26:23.83\00:26:26.96 carries with it's own attendant challenges. 00:26:26.99\00:26:29.78 Pastoring, one set of challenges. 00:26:29.81\00:26:31.95 Teaching, one set of challenges. 00:26:31.98\00:26:33.56 Conference president, another set of challenge 00:26:33.59\00:26:35.12 and of course president of educational institution. 00:26:35.15\00:26:38.78 What do you see now are the greatest challenges? 00:26:38.82\00:26:41.89 I want to go back to that and add 00:26:41.92\00:26:43.33 to that what has been the change in the student 00:26:43.36\00:26:46.56 mindset over those 15 years? 00:26:46.59\00:26:48.62 I mean, we're now in the I generation, 00:26:48.65\00:26:50.02 iPad, iPod, iPhone, yeah, yeah, you know, we've got I's. 00:26:50.05\00:26:53.84 So the technological curve has changed just a little bit, 00:26:53.87\00:26:58.27 but as you look back over those 15 years 00:26:58.30\00:26:59.99 what kind of job was coming then 00:27:00.02\00:27:02.40 as oppose to what's coming now? 00:27:02.43\00:27:03.80 Well, clearly the culture is challenging our young people. 00:27:03.83\00:27:07.53 Yes, yes. I think that across the board 00:27:07.56\00:27:10.01 because of it's acts accessible, you know, 00:27:10.04\00:27:13.46 we don't for instance want them to have and have never 00:27:13.49\00:27:17.51 allowed them to have televisions in the room 00:27:17.54\00:27:19.53 but if you have a computer in the room, 00:27:19.56\00:27:21.18 I mean, you know, it's all there. 00:27:21.21\00:27:24.12 I mean anything on the internet is there. 00:27:24.15\00:27:25.68 You can screen all you want off the internet, 00:27:25.71\00:27:27.75 but there are ways to get around some of that and so I think 00:27:27.78\00:27:32.25 that we need to be teaching more of the values 00:27:32.28\00:27:35.44 in strengthening their core convictions 00:27:35.47\00:27:38.25 for internal resistance to some of the things that the culture 00:27:38.28\00:27:41.74 is trying to cramp down their throats. 00:27:41.77\00:27:43.75 I think that's more of a challenge today 00:27:43.78\00:27:45.32 than it was 15 years ago. 00:27:45.35\00:27:49.34 Other challenges certainly I think higher education 00:27:49.37\00:27:53.13 itself is challenged today by the internet courses 00:27:53.16\00:27:57.83 that are being offered for free across the country. 00:27:57.86\00:28:00.91 And education in the future is going to be challenged. 00:28:00.94\00:28:04.42 I believe we will always have a place for a living, 00:28:04.45\00:28:07.62 learning, residential environment where we can pass 00:28:07.65\00:28:10.94 the mantle of faith from the older generation 00:28:10.97\00:28:13.25 to the younger generation. 00:28:13.28\00:28:14.71 You don't sing in the choir on the internet very well. 00:28:14.74\00:28:18.14 You don't play in there intramurals very well. 00:28:18.17\00:28:20.77 You don't have the experience of the living learning 00:28:20.80\00:28:23.26 environment in the dormitory. 00:28:23.29\00:28:25.07 And so I think there always be a place for a place 00:28:25.10\00:28:27.52 like Southern Adventist University. 00:28:27.55\00:28:29.79 But we are challenged by some of the internet courses 00:28:29.82\00:28:32.95 that were kids can pick up a lot of education 00:28:32.98\00:28:35.37 without coming to the school. 00:28:35.40\00:28:39.46 You know, there are a lot of issues that face this church 00:28:39.49\00:28:43.93 today and we mention the creation evolution issue. 00:28:43.96\00:28:48.07 More recently there has been the issue of women's ordination 00:28:48.10\00:28:52.73 that has been around before, it was dealt with it in Utrecht 00:28:52.76\00:28:56.78 at the General Conference session. 00:28:56.81\00:28:58.95 I think there was another session may be Indianapolis 00:28:58.98\00:29:02.02 that they dealt with it. 00:29:02.05\00:29:03.44 And, and then it's--it disappeared 00:29:03.47\00:29:05.88 for a little while from the agenda. 00:29:05.91\00:29:08.32 In fact I know that Elder Parson told me 00:29:08.35\00:29:11.50 that he sent out questionnaires to the different division 00:29:11.53\00:29:14.85 presidents before the last General Conference in Atlanta 00:29:14.88\00:29:19.67 and he did not even receive very many replies 00:29:19.70\00:29:23.22 from them or even what whether they want to discuss it or not. 00:29:23.25\00:29:26.45 So it was not put on the agenda at that time. 00:29:26.48\00:29:29.25 However it has become right to the forefront now. 00:29:29.28\00:29:32.64 You are I believe chair of a committee 00:29:32.67\00:29:37.10 that's studying it for North American Division, is it true? 00:29:37.13\00:29:40.16 The General Conference has asked that each division 00:29:40.19\00:29:43.24 form a kind of biblical research commission 00:29:43.27\00:29:46.62 or committee to look in to the issue of the theology 00:29:46.65\00:29:50.02 of ordination as well as whether it would be appropriate 00:29:50.05\00:29:54.36 to ordain women to the gospel ministry. 00:29:54.39\00:29:57.06 And so the division has asked me to chair a group 00:29:57.09\00:30:00.82 of about 14 or 15 people that are looking at this issue 00:30:00.85\00:30:05.80 and we've to bring a report 00:30:05.83\00:30:07.34 to the year end meeting, a year from now. Okay. 00:30:07.37\00:30:10.03 As to the consensus that we come to. 00:30:10.06\00:30:13.07 We do not have a unanimity on the group 00:30:13.10\00:30:16.04 that doesn't surprise, does it? 00:30:16.07\00:30:17.45 No, I'm just shocked. 00:30:17.48\00:30:21.05 Now these are administrators, educators? 00:30:21.08\00:30:23.18 There are some administrators, there are some pastors, 00:30:23.21\00:30:26.11 there are some theologians, it's a variety of--variety mix 00:30:26.14\00:30:29.82 that was chosen by 00:30:29.85\00:30:31.98 the North American Division Administrative Group. 00:30:32.01\00:30:34.65 You know, one of the things that has come up 00:30:34.68\00:30:36.97 since this discussion was how ordination actually began, 00:30:37.00\00:30:43.06 then someone pointed out to me, they said, 00:30:43.09\00:30:45.71 there's really no biblical ordination 00:30:45.74\00:30:48.81 and that it was something that arose in the Catholic Church 00:30:48.84\00:30:54.00 to control who was to give the sacraments. 00:30:54.03\00:30:57.47 And that therefore they really questioned 00:30:57.50\00:31:00.37 whether ordination is biblical at all? 00:31:00.40\00:31:03.23 Well, the ordination is not a word in the Bible 00:31:03.26\00:31:05.83 that you would use a lot, 00:31:05.86\00:31:07.23 but there is the laying on of hands. Yes. 00:31:07.26\00:31:09.18 And what does it mean theologically that you lay 00:31:09.21\00:31:13.67 on the hands on someone and that's one 00:31:13.70\00:31:15.32 of the things that we'll be studying. 00:31:15.35\00:31:16.75 I served on the ordination study commission and I think 19, 00:31:16.78\00:31:22.51 late 1980s' that Neal Wilson established. 00:31:22.54\00:31:26.55 We met for three or four or five days out of Cana Springs. 00:31:26.58\00:31:31.26 I have a stack of papers about this high from everybody under 00:31:31.29\00:31:35.36 the sun and we have been collecting those plus more. 00:31:35.39\00:31:39.79 I don't know that we need to do a lot more theological papers. 00:31:39.82\00:31:45.80 We need to come to some consensus 00:31:45.83\00:31:47.46 on the papers that we have. 00:31:47.49\00:31:49.28 It is true that the church has not developed 00:31:49.31\00:31:51.40 a real clear theology of ordination. 00:31:51.43\00:31:54.03 What does it mean? 00:31:54.06\00:31:55.60 Is it simply giving in appointing somebody 00:31:55.63\00:31:59.88 or is it anointing them? 00:31:59.91\00:32:02.76 Is it a sacramental service 00:32:02.79\00:32:05.09 or is it appointing them to a task? 00:32:05.12\00:32:08.04 I think those distinctions need to be clarified 00:32:08.07\00:32:10.76 in terms of what we intended to be. 00:32:10.79\00:32:13.08 Let's talk just a little bit, Dr. Bietz, about the process. 00:32:13.11\00:32:16.22 I know your committee will make a report next year at-- 00:32:16.25\00:32:20.41 Yes. Now is that for all of the division committees 00:32:20.44\00:32:22.62 and then something coherent will be done 00:32:22.65\00:32:24.02 at the general conference? What is the, the process? 00:32:24.05\00:32:25.49 Process then is those reports that are approved 00:32:25.52\00:32:28.59 by each division will go to a larger group 00:32:28.62\00:32:32.63 that is appointed by the general conference 00:32:32.66\00:32:34.64 that represents all the divisions. 00:32:34.67\00:32:37.01 They will then bring a report probably to annual council 00:32:37.04\00:32:40.21 in 14 and then in 15 it would go 00:32:40.24\00:32:43.49 to the general conference session. 00:32:43.52\00:32:44.89 And that will be in San Antonio. Yes. 00:32:44.92\00:32:47.37 And some people have said, the Battle of the Alamo 00:32:47.40\00:32:49.56 will be fought again in San Antonio. 00:32:49.59\00:32:53.52 But it will be quite interesting--I think 00:32:53.55\00:32:56.62 that there are some people who are very concerned 00:32:56.65\00:33:01.04 that individual unions will begin to make decisions 00:33:01.07\00:33:06.83 rather than waiting for that process and waiting 00:33:06.86\00:33:11.60 for it to take place at the general conference, 00:33:11.63\00:33:13.64 are you hearing some of that? 00:33:13.67\00:33:15.54 Yes, certainly, in that there was an appeal even on our 00:33:15.57\00:33:18.88 committee that we should appeal to those unions 00:33:18.91\00:33:21.91 to wait until such time as the full report came out. 00:33:21.94\00:33:25.45 I think those unions feel 00:33:25.48\00:33:27.24 they've waited long enough probably. 00:33:27.27\00:33:29.69 So I'm sure that's there conviction. 00:33:29.72\00:33:32.91 I do wish in some ways that this does not need 00:33:32.94\00:33:37.40 to be the 29th fundamental belief. 00:33:37.43\00:33:39.79 We do not need to rise the stakes 00:33:39.82\00:33:42.34 so high that the unity of the church 00:33:42.37\00:33:44.93 some how must depend on everybody 00:33:44.96\00:33:47.91 coming to a unanimous decision on this issue. 00:33:47.94\00:33:51.46 There are, you know, there are more important issues 00:33:51.49\00:33:55.41 and we're all saved by the grace of the good Lord. 00:33:55.44\00:33:58.50 Amen. And I think we need to focus on that and I'm spreading 00:33:58.53\00:34:01.38 the message and not getting too distracted. 00:34:01.41\00:34:04.71 Yeah. Having spoken about spreading the message, 00:34:04.74\00:34:06.98 you want to make another left turn and swing back 00:34:07.01\00:34:08.84 because you've got a very interesting rather thick 00:34:08.87\00:34:11.14 and impressive book in your hand. 00:34:11.17\00:34:13.42 Tell us a little bit about 00:34:13.45\00:34:14.82 what's in here and what this is all about? 00:34:14.85\00:34:16.22 You know, many times when people appear 00:34:16.25\00:34:19.37 on the morning shows, NBC, you know what they're doing. 00:34:19.40\00:34:22.21 Just for pulling their book. Okay. 00:34:22.24\00:34:24.67 So here's my opportunity. 00:34:24.70\00:34:28.40 It's quite a offer. This is the book, okay. 00:34:28.43\00:34:30.60 All right. Steve Pawluk and I, Steve Pawluk 00:34:30.63\00:34:33.81 is Provost of La Sierra University. 00:34:33.84\00:34:35.79 He was the academic dean here 00:34:35.82\00:34:37.80 at Southern Adventist University for a number of years. 00:34:37.83\00:34:40.80 He is the primary mover behind this, but this book entitled 00:34:40.83\00:34:46.50 is Seventh-day Adventist Higher Education in North America, 00:34:46.53\00:34:49.41 Theological Perspectives and Current Issues. 00:34:49.44\00:34:52.72 And Steve and I have asked a variety of authors to bring 00:34:52.75\00:34:57.79 their perspectives and I'll share just a couple 00:34:57.82\00:35:00.80 of those...authors so you can get it. 00:35:00.83\00:35:04.35 Now, I hold your mic and you can turn. 00:35:04.38\00:35:06.03 Turn the book, here we go. 00:35:06.06\00:35:09.19 We have a section on the theology 00:35:09.22\00:35:10.77 of Seventh-day Adventist Higher Education, 00:35:10.80\00:35:12.68 the value added aspect 00:35:12.71\00:35:14.45 of Seventh-day Adventist Higher Education. 00:35:14.48\00:35:16.48 External perspectives and the future 00:35:16.51\00:35:18.40 of Seventh-day Adventist Higher Education. 00:35:18.43\00:35:20.19 With authors like Digosbern and Randal Wisbey, 00:35:20.22\00:35:26.58 Heather Knight, Don Williams, Bailey Gillespie, 00:35:26.61\00:35:29.33 Douglas Herman, David Thomas, Steve Pawluk, 00:35:29.36\00:35:31.96 Niels-Erik Andreasen and these are chapters of the book. 00:35:31.99\00:35:36.81 Yes. So it was our attempt to seek to crystallize 00:35:36.84\00:35:42.19 and all the chapters here don't agree on the approaches 00:35:42.22\00:35:45.33 but to crystallize some perspectives 00:35:45.36\00:35:47.80 on higher education. 00:35:47.83\00:35:49.20 I don't think that we had done quite enough 00:35:49.23\00:35:50.77 if in this area in the church. 00:35:50.80\00:35:53.59 Well, that's interesting and-- 00:35:53.62\00:35:55.70 And you can get it at the ABC. 00:35:55.73\00:35:57.10 ABC, okay. So if you would like to get a copy 00:35:57.13\00:36:01.63 of that, you go to ABC. 00:36:01.66\00:36:03.03 This is Pacific Press I see? 00:36:03.06\00:36:04.43 Yeah, it was published by the Pacific Press. 00:36:04.46\00:36:05.91 Pacific Press, yeah, all right. 00:36:05.94\00:36:08.27 Well, listen, I think that is much needed and I hope 00:36:08.30\00:36:12.90 that any one who's interested in Adventist education 00:36:12.93\00:36:15.84 will pick up a copy. Well, it stimulates the conversation. 00:36:15.87\00:36:17.61 Yes, it does. Yes, man, that answers a lot of questions 00:36:17.64\00:36:20.27 and maybe even raises some others. Yeah. 00:36:20.30\00:36:23.56 One of the things I think that, that parents 00:36:23.59\00:36:25.53 want to see Adventist education, who know education, 00:36:25.56\00:36:29.39 training children is not cheap, there's an investment there. 00:36:29.42\00:36:32.38 You want a kind of feel when you're out there working 00:36:32.41\00:36:35.72 at second job or putting in an overtime to get your 00:36:35.75\00:36:38.26 child to school, that, that school has your child's 00:36:38.29\00:36:41.33 best interest at heart, that they're gonna come out 00:36:41.36\00:36:44.10 of that school certainly with education 00:36:44.13\00:36:46.79 but with also inspiration and a working 00:36:46.82\00:36:49.29 relationship with God. 00:36:49.32\00:36:50.69 Now, no college can guarantee that, but if you can create 00:36:50.72\00:36:53.69 the atmosphere, the culture where a relationship 00:36:53.72\00:36:56.34 can be forged or formed, then I don't mind working 00:36:56.37\00:37:00.21 that extra job to send my child to that school. 00:37:00.24\00:37:02.53 So for all pulling in the same direction then we can pass 00:37:02.56\00:37:05.07 the torch on to a generation that will carry on 00:37:05.10\00:37:08.73 in the trajectory that we've already been 00:37:08.76\00:37:10.50 traveling in and I think that's important. 00:37:10.53\00:37:11.90 And believe me it's worth the investment. Yes. 00:37:11.93\00:37:14.11 Absolutely worthy investment. 00:37:14.14\00:37:16.18 Nothing is more valuable. 00:37:16.21\00:37:19.47 Our four of our children were educated in our system 00:37:19.50\00:37:22.87 and it was not cheap because 00:37:22.90\00:37:25.97 I was not denominationally employed. 00:37:26.00\00:37:28.79 I did not receive any subsidy whatsoever. 00:37:28.82\00:37:33.37 No discounts and so I will say this--I did for one child right 00:37:33.40\00:37:38.76 at the end but that's all and only a year so there. 00:37:38.79\00:37:42.33 But I'll say this, it was the greatest investment 00:37:42.36\00:37:46.04 we've ever made. 00:37:46.07\00:37:47.44 They went there and at least two cases found, 00:37:47.47\00:37:51.77 their lives made there which is a very important aspect 00:37:51.80\00:37:56.11 of education as well, where I found my wife. 00:37:56.14\00:37:59.14 Southern Missionary College used to be 00:37:59.17\00:38:00.79 Southern Matrimony College. Yes. 00:38:00.82\00:38:02.42 That's what we used to call it. Right. 00:38:02.45\00:38:04.04 Well, the motto of South Western 00:38:04.07\00:38:08.49 where I have did my first two years was where students 00:38:08.52\00:38:11.39 learnt to live and we changed it's where they learned to love. 00:38:11.42\00:38:14.38 And but it was definitely as I think back and Camille 00:38:14.41\00:38:20.91 and I have had 52 wonderful years together. 00:38:20.94\00:38:23.12 I can say that because she's not watching tonight 00:38:23.15\00:38:25.22 and but we've had 52 wonderful years together 00:38:25.25\00:38:30.63 and I've often thought if God hadn't led me to that school 00:38:30.66\00:38:36.96 into that women, I don't know where in the world I'd be, 00:38:36.99\00:38:40.09 but it wouldn't be where I am. 00:38:40.12\00:38:42.45 And so it's so important to spend 00:38:42.48\00:38:46.57 the money and it's amazing. 00:38:46.60\00:38:47.97 So many times we'll say, man, that's gonna cost me 00:38:48.00\00:38:51.38 40,000 bucks or 50,000 or whatever it's gonna be, 00:38:51.41\00:38:55.35 but we don't think a thing about buying a Toyota Sienna 00:38:55.38\00:38:58.76 that's gonna cost as that, we pay that out over 00:38:58.79\00:39:01.35 a few years, but we cringe when we think about spending 00:39:01.38\00:39:05.44 for an education which can effect the child's life, 00:39:05.47\00:39:08.97 their income, their future and salvation 00:39:09.00\00:39:14.29 and their marriage and every other aspect of their life. 00:39:14.32\00:39:18.09 Now you put that number a little high 40 or 50,000. 00:39:18.12\00:39:20.46 Let's go down to 20, okay. 00:39:20.49\00:39:22.11 That's for one year though. 00:39:22.14\00:39:23.51 Yeah. Okay, for one year. 00:39:23.54\00:39:26.70 I was trying to grab you. 00:39:26.73\00:39:28.51 You're trying to get all the way through, all right. Yes. 00:39:28.54\00:39:31.85 But it does, it takes, it does take a little money, 00:39:31.88\00:39:34.30 but you know, amazingly today, there are loans available too. 00:39:34.33\00:39:38.79 And when I was going to school, there were no loans available. 00:39:38.82\00:39:41.61 The average loan that the student graduates 00:39:41.64\00:39:44.48 from Southern with is under $20,000. 00:39:44.51\00:39:47.54 And normally if someone would go by a car for that-- 00:39:47.57\00:39:51.34 Oh, absolutely and not even blink. 00:39:51.37\00:39:52.74 Yeah, and not think about it. 00:39:52.77\00:39:54.50 Right, so it's a good investment. 00:39:54.53\00:39:57.63 We have scholarships, and so forth, 00:39:57.66\00:40:00.62 and so there are ways. 00:40:00.65\00:40:02.20 I tell parents, you know they say, well, 00:40:02.23\00:40:04.95 we just can't afford it. 00:40:04.98\00:40:06.79 Apply, find out if you can afford it. 00:40:06.82\00:40:09.65 Whatever school you are going to, don't just 00:40:09.68\00:40:11.49 threw up your hands and say you can't afford it 00:40:11.52\00:40:13.39 without applying, because there is scholarships, 00:40:13.42\00:40:15.71 there is loans, there is work opportunities. 00:40:15.74\00:40:18.41 There is a hundred different ways. 00:40:18.44\00:40:19.81 And sometimes a student can take a little longer. 00:40:19.84\00:40:22.18 I had to take a whole year out and work 00:40:22.21\00:40:24.94 and there is nothing wrong with doing that. 00:40:24.97\00:40:28.34 And it's dangerous because when I took my year out to work, 00:40:28.37\00:40:33.40 everybody said, you'll never back to school. 00:40:33.43\00:40:35.94 But I was determined to go back to school 00:40:35.97\00:40:39.00 and to get an education so sometimes 00:40:39.03\00:40:42.06 you have to spread it out over a few more years. Thats right. 00:40:42.09\00:40:44.95 And you know kids say some--they were older, 00:40:44.98\00:40:49.48 and they say "Oh, but I am 30-years-old. 00:40:49.51\00:40:52.30 And I will be 34 by the time I had a degree." 00:40:52.33\00:40:54.97 And I usually say look, you're gonna be 34 when you are 34 00:40:55.00\00:40:58.83 anyway and you will be 34 without a degree 00:40:58.86\00:41:02.37 rather than 34 with one. That's right. 00:41:02.40\00:41:04.71 So I really believe in Christian education. Absolutely. 00:41:04.74\00:41:09.99 I could not believe in it more strongly than I do. 00:41:10.02\00:41:13.71 I believe in it so much that I am willing to take on 00:41:13.74\00:41:17.41 any educational place that I honestly feel 00:41:17.44\00:41:21.54 is not--is turning children, our young people away 00:41:21.57\00:41:25.80 bringing doubt in their life. 00:41:25.83\00:41:27.20 I can't stand like that, even though I may love the guys 00:41:27.23\00:41:31.89 that are running the school and I may care for them 00:41:31.92\00:41:35.32 and I may worry about them. 00:41:35.35\00:41:38.27 I have to worry about the student more 00:41:38.30\00:41:41.47 and so I can't--I can't within my soul, just say well its okay, 00:41:41.50\00:41:47.55 if they are teaching things that shouldn't-- 00:41:47.58\00:41:49.79 they have to teach 28, 29 whatever fundamental beliefs. 00:41:49.82\00:41:57.45 I'll stick with 28. Twenty eight. 00:41:57.48\00:41:58.90 We'll stay with 28. Yeah. 00:41:58.93\00:42:00.30 But they need to teach those and to teach them solidly. 00:42:00.33\00:42:03.96 If they are gonna call themselves 00:42:03.99\00:42:05.79 a Seventh-day Adventist school 00:42:05.82\00:42:07.46 and Southern Adventist University 00:42:07.49\00:42:09.32 does that and that's why we can-- 00:42:09.35\00:42:13.28 we can recommend your university without any 00:42:13.31\00:42:16.57 question to our viewers. And we're glad, our viewers. 00:42:16.60\00:42:17.97 Because this is an issue as you can see he has a lot of passion 00:42:18.00\00:42:20.24 for it in our meetings, when we talk about 00:42:20.27\00:42:22.43 what the schools are teaching particularly 00:42:22.46\00:42:24.61 at this level, Jim sort of rises up. 00:42:24.64\00:42:27.54 But I am sure you take that very seriously 00:42:27.57\00:42:29.71 as president of the large school, one of our 00:42:29.74\00:42:31.60 premier school, that's something that is part of your 00:42:31.63\00:42:35.53 dealings every single day I suspect. 00:42:35.56\00:42:38.49 No, it is. It was very important when we hire a faculty 00:42:38.52\00:42:41.62 obviously, that's a very important issue. It is. 00:42:41.65\00:42:44.70 And I know when they were discussing a faculty 00:42:44.73\00:42:49.80 who was teaching just absolute total evolution, 00:42:49.83\00:42:55.65 one of my good friend to as a church leader said, 00:42:55.68\00:42:58.12 well we must be redemptive for the teacher as well. 00:42:58.15\00:43:01.48 Yes, I would fire the teacher first and redeem him later. 00:43:01.51\00:43:06.01 And I am sorry but seriously I can't--if somebody 00:43:06.04\00:43:10.90 serving poison to my kids I can't say, 00:43:10.93\00:43:13.97 well we got to work with this guy. 00:43:14.00\00:43:16.39 You have to stop the poison 00:43:16.42\00:43:18.61 and then you can work with the guy. 00:43:18.64\00:43:21.96 I'd really believe in working with him, I mean believe me, 00:43:21.99\00:43:25.12 I am an evangelist, I'' be out there knocking on his door, 00:43:25.15\00:43:27.99 trying to get him back to church. 00:43:28.02\00:43:29.67 But I want him to come back teaching the truth 00:43:29.70\00:43:33.11 and if I'm little strong, forgive me. 00:43:33.14\00:43:35.64 But I do have strong convictions in this particular area 00:43:35.67\00:43:40.55 and we appreciate what you're doing here. 00:43:40.58\00:43:42.40 And we appreciates your religious department-- 00:43:42.43\00:43:44.45 religion department. Thank you very much. 00:43:44.48\00:43:45.85 And the students that you send us our direction 00:43:45.88\00:43:49.05 are some of our absolute best as we've already stated. 00:43:49.08\00:43:52.24 Well, as I said we have a great group of students 00:43:52.27\00:43:55.40 and they inspire me. Yes. 00:43:55.43\00:43:58.16 And in many ways I think the younger generation today 00:43:58.19\00:44:02.14 is more committed, has a higher level 00:44:02.17\00:44:05.17 of understanding of some of the issues 00:44:05.20\00:44:07.73 than I did when I went to the school a few years ago. 00:44:07.76\00:44:10.84 You know, few years back when I was in Dallas, 00:44:10.87\00:44:14.03 I got acquainted with the surgeon. 00:44:14.06\00:44:18.15 He was there during a specialty, I believe he did one in heart 00:44:18.18\00:44:22.56 but he did one at that time an emergency surgery. 00:44:22.59\00:44:26.60 His name was Dwayne Beets. 00:44:26.63\00:44:30.11 I believe you know him. 00:44:30.14\00:44:32.04 I know him quite well, he is my brother, yes. 00:44:32.07\00:44:34.97 A very fine man and I hope he is watching tonight. 00:44:35.00\00:44:38.96 I should have texted him 00:44:38.99\00:44:40.56 and told him to watch, I didn't that. 00:44:40.59\00:44:42.23 Well, we'll find out. 00:44:42.26\00:44:43.63 I was going to do it but I thought we'll test him 00:44:43.66\00:44:46.53 to see if he really is a true viewer. Yeah, okay. 00:44:46.56\00:44:48.83 True viewer, you wouldn't believe it. 00:44:48.86\00:44:50.23 And not give him a lead. 00:44:50.26\00:44:51.78 Well, listen, thank you for coming. 00:44:51.81\00:44:53.78 Well, thank you very much for inviting me. 00:44:53.81\00:44:55.33 Thank you for putting on this program at Southern. 00:44:55.36\00:44:58.47 We appreciate it and our students 00:44:58.50\00:44:59.91 will gain a great benefit. Thank you. Thank so very much. 00:44:59.94\00:45:03.53 We are very appreciative and while you're making 00:45:03.56\00:45:06.53 your way off, we're gonna talk about this offer again. 00:45:06.56\00:45:10.21 And then bring Steven Ruf on. 00:45:10.24\00:45:12.46 And I am gonna read the second part, it says, 00:45:12.49\00:45:15.33 "Keep about your work. 00:45:15.36\00:45:17.50 Do not flinch because the lion roars, 00:45:17.53\00:45:20.06 do not stop to stone the devil's dogs, 00:45:20.09\00:45:23.48 do not fool away your time chasing the devil's rabbits." 00:45:23.51\00:45:26.88 And that part I've heard Elder Richards 00:45:26.91\00:45:28.86 quote so many times. 00:45:28.89\00:45:30.47 "Do your work. Let liars lie, let sectarians quarrel, 00:45:30.50\00:45:34.90 let corporations resolve, let editors publish, 00:45:34.93\00:45:38.42 let the devil do his worst, 00:45:38.45\00:45:40.28 but see to it that nothing hinders you from fulfilling 00:45:40.31\00:45:44.76 the work that God has given you." 00:45:44.79\00:45:47.04 Let us send this to you. 00:45:47.07\00:45:48.85 Call us at 618-627-4651. 00:45:48.88\00:45:53.92 The operators are standing there right now 00:45:53.95\00:45:56.20 or sitting there one or the other, 00:45:56.23\00:45:58.10 but they are waiting for your call. 00:45:58.13\00:46:00.51 Give them a call, let them know that you want a copy of this. 00:46:00.54\00:46:03.92 You may not want it yourself, 00:46:03.95\00:46:05.79 but you may want to give it to somebody. 00:46:05.82\00:46:07.46 You may know particularly a young person 00:46:07.49\00:46:09.55 that needs to keep about their work and I tell you 00:46:09.58\00:46:13.93 when things get going really tough at 3ABN. 00:46:13.96\00:46:17.43 I go, I hate to tell you, I keep this in the bathroom. 00:46:17.46\00:46:21.43 Okay. And I go in there and I read every word of it, 00:46:21.46\00:46:26.54 and then I pray, and I say, Lord help me to keep about my work. 00:46:26.57\00:46:32.28 That's what You have given us to do 00:46:32.31\00:46:34.80 and that's what You want us to do. 00:46:34.83\00:46:36.87 And I want you to have a copy of this. 00:46:36.90\00:46:38.48 Yes, it is a call, Jim, to stay focus and of course 00:46:38.51\00:46:41.21 whenever you're doing the work of the Lord, 00:46:41.24\00:46:42.73 you're gonna be challenged by the devil. 00:46:42.76\00:46:44.38 There are so many times people ask us 00:46:44.41\00:46:46.67 "What kind of challenges do you guys have, 00:46:46.70\00:46:48.80 whether the consistent challenge is funding" Always. 00:46:48.83\00:46:51.46 We just have enough of money to do 00:46:51.49\00:46:53.20 what we need to do but other than that the devil 00:46:53.23\00:46:55.56 has so many ways of trying to hinder 00:46:55.59\00:46:58.71 the work that you are trying to do. 00:46:58.74\00:47:00.11 So we have to stay on our knees constantly every department 00:47:00.14\00:47:04.47 has prayer every morning before we begin our work 00:47:04.50\00:47:07.25 and then on Tuesdays we have a joint prayer. That's right. 00:47:07.28\00:47:09.62 Session where we bring everybody together. 00:47:09.65\00:47:11.53 We start the year of with a day of prayer and praise 00:47:11.56\00:47:14.32 and then throughout the year we have prayer and praise session. 00:47:14.35\00:47:17.61 So we realize that when you are on the front lines, 00:47:17.64\00:47:20.82 you're gonna be assaulted by the enemy and that-- 00:47:20.85\00:47:23.37 those assaults are going to be consistent and persistent 00:47:23.40\00:47:27.86 and the devil has many, many, many, many ways, 00:47:27.89\00:47:31.69 but we are possessed of the belief, 00:47:31.72\00:47:35.14 "That greater is He that is in us 00:47:35.17\00:47:36.54 than he that is in the world." 00:47:36.57\00:47:37.94 And we rely on that and the prayers 00:47:37.97\00:47:40.30 of the saints, we really do. 00:47:40.33\00:47:41.78 Now, sometimes people say, well, your offerings are down. 00:47:41.81\00:47:45.06 No. I hate to tell you. 00:47:45.09\00:47:46.46 I mean I do, I'm proud to tell you this. 00:47:46.49\00:47:48.57 Our offerings are not down, they have never been down. 00:47:48.60\00:47:51.92 Our offerings are up, expenses are also up, 00:47:51.95\00:47:56.80 and we keep our operating expenses down. 00:47:56.83\00:48:01.06 They're actually decreased this last year. 00:48:01.09\00:48:04.22 Its equipment, I am looking into the lens of a camera 00:48:04.25\00:48:09.72 that's over 20 years old. 00:48:09.75\00:48:11.91 Cameras have a life of 7, 8, 10 years maximum. 00:48:11.94\00:48:16.59 We just had to buy five cameras, two quit working, 00:48:16.62\00:48:22.86 one was dropped accidentally and that was destroyed. 00:48:22.89\00:48:26.84 We could not get parts for those, 00:48:26.87\00:48:29.68 but we had to buy five cameras. 00:48:29.71\00:48:33.15 We honestly now they--by buying five, 00:48:33.18\00:48:36.14 Moses got a very good deal on those cameras, 00:48:36.17\00:48:38.53 those were $68,000 cameras, he got them for half price 34,000. 00:48:38.56\00:48:44.16 And they said, "If you'll pay for the four, 00:48:44.19\00:48:46.36 we'll give you the fifth one for free." 00:48:46.39\00:48:48.00 He had to do it. 00:48:48.03\00:48:49.57 He called me, I am driving down the road 00:48:49.60\00:48:52.64 and he tells me I have got this opportunity on these, 00:48:52.67\00:48:56.41 but I have to let him know today because, 00:48:56.44\00:48:58.65 it's the last day of the month, 00:48:58.68\00:49:00.56 and they have to make a decision, 00:49:00.59\00:49:02.85 so we said do it and he did it. 00:49:02.88\00:49:07.02 And so we are exited to have five new cameras 00:49:07.05\00:49:10.94 that are on the way here, 00:49:10.97\00:49:12.34 Now those cameras will be on the truck 00:49:12.37\00:49:13.91 because our truck cameras take really the most beating, 00:49:13.94\00:49:16.48 because they are on the truck, if truck is bouncing along 00:49:16.51\00:49:18.32 the highway and last month during our Anchors, 00:49:18.35\00:49:21.08 we had several cameras go out. Yeah. 00:49:21.11\00:49:22.82 In middle of the broadcast and we sort to work around them 00:49:22.85\00:49:25.26 but those truck cameras have said to us, 00:49:25.29\00:49:28.35 we can't do it any longer. 00:49:28.38\00:49:30.21 Twenty years ago we were brand new, we're not anymore, Yeah. 00:49:30.24\00:49:33.55 So we have to go out and those, but think about it Jim. 00:49:33.58\00:49:35.75 What piece of electronic equipment that you have, 00:49:35.78\00:49:37.87 that you brought 20 years ago that is still functioning. 00:49:37.90\00:49:40.74 Your computer for 20 years ago 00:49:40.77\00:49:42.67 was on the land field somewhere. 00:49:42.70\00:49:44.07 Right, you don't even know where it is. 00:49:44.10\00:49:45.47 Right, precise there's nothing that's been around 00:49:45.50\00:49:47.41 for 20 years, that's electronics. 00:49:47.44\00:49:48.81 So we had to do this and they will be coming 00:49:48.84\00:49:51.07 but they had to be paid for, we brought them on faith 00:49:51.10\00:49:53.51 as we do every thing on faith. We did, absolutely. 00:49:53.54\00:49:56.43 And to be honest with you they are not the absolute, 00:49:56.46\00:50:01.00 they are high definition cameras. Yes. 00:50:01.03\00:50:03.52 But we would like to have bought the next better camera 00:50:03.55\00:50:07.32 but those would have been 68,000. Yes. 00:50:07.35\00:50:09.95 These others, they will support him for at least five years. 00:50:09.98\00:50:13.27 In other words for at least five years 00:50:13.30\00:50:15.66 we have complete support from parts etc. for these cameras. 00:50:15.69\00:50:21.27 But, folks that's just about the life of a camera 00:50:21.30\00:50:24.08 and we've got all of these recorders 00:50:24.11\00:50:26.88 and we're trying to go to digital now. 00:50:26.91\00:50:29.80 This is where our challenge is, it really is. Yeah, it is. 00:50:29.83\00:50:33.41 So thank you for your faithfulness. 00:50:33.44\00:50:35.32 You are the most faithful viewers in the world 00:50:35.35\00:50:39.52 and you've been with us, you've never left us, 00:50:39.55\00:50:42.24 you're like--the lord says, I will never leave you, 00:50:42.27\00:50:44.10 I will never forsake you and our viewers 00:50:44.13\00:50:47.21 have been right there with the Lord. Amen. 00:50:47.24\00:50:49.93 We are going to call out somebody 00:50:49.96\00:50:51.33 now who knows about--when you talk about cameras 00:50:51.36\00:50:53.07 and shelf life of cameras and production, Steven Ruf, 00:50:53.10\00:50:56.77 who I met over years ago at GCTV in Toronto. 00:50:56.80\00:51:03.77 He sent us some of our best guys man, 00:51:03.80\00:51:05.53 we appreciate the work you're doing. 00:51:05.56\00:51:07.71 First give us your title here at the school, 00:51:07.74\00:51:09.49 then we'll start to move from there. 00:51:09.52\00:51:10.89 I am an Associate Professor 00:51:10.92\00:51:12.29 in the School of Journalism and Communication 00:51:12.32\00:51:14.57 here at Southern, I think about 16 years now. 00:51:14.60\00:51:17.84 Praise the Lord. One year longer than the president. 00:51:17.87\00:51:20.26 Oh, yeah, that's true but of course 00:51:20.29\00:51:21.74 he was here as the pastor for many years as well. 00:51:21.77\00:51:24.10 Right. I come from a family of pastors. 00:51:24.13\00:51:26.60 My dad was a pastor, my brother 00:51:26.63\00:51:29.38 is in New Haven, Connecticut. Okay. 00:51:29.41\00:51:32.22 But I chose a different path and I spent my early years 00:51:32.25\00:51:36.92 as a reporter working in radio and television. 00:51:36.95\00:51:39.42 And then decided to go to graduate school 00:51:39.45\00:51:42.55 and I've been teaching here ever since. 00:51:42.58\00:51:44.83 I did a wedding with your brother married my step son 00:51:44.86\00:51:47.37 in Massachusetts some years ago. Yes, that's right. 00:51:47.40\00:51:50.90 Kevin Haute is on our staff, so I know the Ruf name 00:51:50.93\00:51:53.79 and of course as I said we work together GCTV in Toronto. 00:51:53.82\00:51:57.77 What are the kinds of things that your department 00:51:57.80\00:52:00.10 is training young people to do. 00:52:00.13\00:52:02.10 Right now, we have about a 130 majors 00:52:02.13\00:52:04.25 and that includes mass communication 00:52:04.28\00:52:06.63 which knows media production and advertising, 00:52:06.66\00:52:09.41 even writing and editing. 00:52:09.44\00:52:10.81 We also have the traditional journalism degree. 00:52:10.84\00:52:14.02 We also have our biggest major public relations, 00:52:14.05\00:52:16.99 a big need for that in our institutions, 00:52:17.02\00:52:18.85 you know, our schools, our church work 00:52:18.88\00:52:21.81 and so, yes we have, you know in any given year, 00:52:21.84\00:52:25.60 you know, 30 or 40 graduates 00:52:25.63\00:52:27.08 going down the isle, looking for jobs. 00:52:27.11\00:52:28.84 Praise God, praise God. 00:52:28.87\00:52:30.24 What is it about from your perspective? 00:52:30.27\00:52:32.84 As I said, I mentioned our number of young people 00:52:32.87\00:52:34.42 that we've got them from Southern. 00:52:34.45\00:52:37.12 And it just so happens that we have this little stream 00:52:37.15\00:52:38.98 of people coming from Southern, but they are hard working, 00:52:39.01\00:52:41.43 they are focused, they have working relation with Christ 00:52:41.46\00:52:43.47 and they've become really invaluable 00:52:43.50\00:52:45.83 if not indispensable to what we do. 00:52:45.86\00:52:47.50 What is it about the culture here from your perspective 00:52:47.53\00:52:50.07 that prepares a young person? 00:52:50.10\00:52:52.48 First of all technically they know what they are doing, 00:52:52.51\00:52:54.82 but they also seem to come with this working relationship 00:52:54.85\00:52:57.10 with Jesus Christ which we value so highly. 00:52:57.13\00:52:59.70 Well, it's integration of faith in learning. 00:52:59.73\00:53:01.66 And you know, you can define that in a number of ways. 00:53:01.69\00:53:04.47 It could be in the classroom, 00:53:04.50\00:53:05.92 you know where the instructors are--you know talking 00:53:05.95\00:53:09.08 about biblical concepts and relating it 00:53:09.11\00:53:11.56 even to technical, you know subjects. 00:53:11.59\00:53:13.96 But it also happens outside the class room. 00:53:13.99\00:53:16.25 You know, where that student may appear in my office 00:53:16.28\00:53:19.00 and really be struggling that week 00:53:19.03\00:53:20.76 with an issue in their family or in a relationship. 00:53:20.79\00:53:23.98 And I can come around my desk and sit down, 00:53:24.01\00:53:27.39 you know, right next to them and say, hey, let's pray, 00:53:27.42\00:53:31.37 you know, let's ask the God for some spiritual healing 00:53:31.40\00:53:34.75 and I think it starts there. 00:53:34.78\00:53:36.52 Praise God. That is wonderful. 00:53:36.55\00:53:38.71 That is powerful too. 00:53:38.74\00:53:40.11 And speak so much for what's going on here. 00:53:40.14\00:53:42.68 As you look at the kinds of young people 00:53:42.71\00:53:45.13 you are getting., Dr. Beat said and-with some sense of pride. 00:53:45.16\00:53:50.31 ABC says, when we see Southern on the applicant list 00:53:50.34\00:53:55.18 that resume kind of floats to the surface. 00:53:55.21\00:53:58.26 How does that kind of thing make you feel? 00:53:58.29\00:53:59.80 Oh, very proud. 00:53:59.83\00:54:01.20 And we really try to work hard with all the employers 00:54:01.23\00:54:05.68 and not only here locally in the Chattanooga area, 00:54:05.71\00:54:08.11 but we work with broadcast stations in a students hometown 00:54:08.14\00:54:12.67 to setup an internship where practicum is we call it. 00:54:12.70\00:54:15.39 To give them that practical experience that's gonna be 00:54:15.42\00:54:18.05 important for getting a job when they graduate. 00:54:18.08\00:54:20.50 It's not only the diploma, but also that practical experience. 00:54:20.53\00:54:23.17 Yes. And ministries like 3ABN is a great source 00:54:23.20\00:54:26.66 of that experience as well. 00:54:26.69\00:54:28.39 Do a number of your young people volunteer or take time 00:54:28.42\00:54:31.93 to do missionary work in addition to because television 00:54:31.96\00:54:35.65 and broadcast of production is high stress. Yes, it is. 00:54:35.68\00:54:38.72 Some very technical things to it, but do they find time 00:54:38.75\00:54:41.05 to sort of integrate that into a sort 00:54:41.08\00:54:42.72 of wider missionary kind of experience. 00:54:42.75\00:54:44.16 They do in a number of different ways. Yes. 00:54:44.19\00:54:45.65 Let me just shore one, or several. 00:54:45.68\00:54:48.22 We have and this has really changed, 00:54:48.25\00:54:50.06 I've seen this trend just in the years 00:54:50.09\00:54:52.14 I have been teaching here. 00:54:52.17\00:54:53.54 We have more students now who are interested 00:54:53.57\00:54:55.67 in traveling overseas and using their skills in mission work, 00:54:55.70\00:55:01.92 for ministry and it amazes me, you know, they want to be go off 00:55:01.95\00:55:06.27 and be a student missionary producing videos in Thailand 00:55:06.30\00:55:09.58 or going down to South America and creating these videos. 00:55:09.61\00:55:13.61 A lot of them end up on your network. Oh, yes. 00:55:13.64\00:55:16.03 And that's just wonderful to see that interest in getting beyond 00:55:16.06\00:55:20.92 just North America but getting international experience. 00:55:20.95\00:55:23.73 And I see that when I was in school, 00:55:23.76\00:55:25.45 you always had missionaries would come in sort of-- 00:55:25.48\00:55:28.46 I don't want to say arm to assist the students, 00:55:28.49\00:55:30.36 but they certain would try to use leverage 00:55:30.39\00:55:31.85 to get kids to go overseas. 00:55:31.88\00:55:33.44 It seems like now there is this almost built in inertia energy, 00:55:33.47\00:55:37.84 let's go and use what we have for those 00:55:37.87\00:55:40.19 who are less fortune who we can help. 00:55:40.22\00:55:41.72 That seems to be part of the culture on this campus- 00:55:41.75\00:55:43.95 It is the mindset of younger generation. Yes, yes, yes. 00:55:43.98\00:55:46.27 To share, to connect with those 00:55:46.30\00:55:48.24 who are less fortunate too, very unselfish. Yeah. 00:55:48.27\00:55:51.48 And that's inspiring to us older folks. 00:55:51.51\00:55:54.08 Praise the lord. Praise that. 00:55:54.11\00:55:55.48 I mentioned that your hair is a little grayer 00:55:55.51\00:55:56.88 than we worked few years ago. 00:55:56.91\00:55:58.28 You said, young people do that. Dr. Bietz here. 00:55:58.31\00:56:01.63 You know some people actually confuse me 00:56:01.66\00:56:03.26 a little bit with looking like Dr. Bietz. 00:56:03.29\00:56:05.12 But I tell him as soon as I open my mouth, 00:56:05.15\00:56:07.02 yeah, there is no confusion there. 00:56:07.05\00:56:08.84 Now where you're from originally your family. 00:56:08.87\00:56:10.49 I grew up here in the south in Tennessee. 00:56:10.52\00:56:13.50 My mother actually was a professor here 00:56:13.53\00:56:15.90 when it was Southern Missionary College, 00:56:15.93\00:56:17.71 she was an English professor. 00:56:17.74\00:56:19.11 And my dad as I said was a pastor. 00:56:19.14\00:56:21.16 So this is kind of home base for me. 00:56:21.19\00:56:23.03 Yeah, those back in the southern matrimonial college days 00:56:23.06\00:56:25.15 I suspect it worked in your family. It did. 00:56:25.18\00:56:27.44 And you know its just-- the cycle continues, 00:56:27.47\00:56:30.03 I have two daughters who are students here now, 00:56:30.06\00:56:32.49 one a freshmen and one a senior and even though 00:56:32.52\00:56:35.73 we live here locally they are- they are leaving on campus 00:56:35.76\00:56:38.65 but we encourage, you know, let them experience the campus life. 00:56:38.68\00:56:43.18 Praise God, praise God. That is great. 00:56:43.21\00:56:46.52 You know while we were here and I mentioned 00:56:46.55\00:56:48.62 we have a sort of dual motto 'cause 00:56:48.65\00:56:50.32 we're also looking for good kids you know. 00:56:50.35\00:56:52.49 So if you any, sent them our way because we can always use 00:56:52.52\00:56:55.38 the interns and employees. 00:56:55.41\00:56:58.62 Your track record is great with us. 00:56:58.65\00:57:00.12 Thank you for that, I appreciate you're thinking of us. 00:57:00.15\00:57:02.18 Praise the Lord. 00:57:02.21\00:57:03.58 We are coming down to the end of our 00:57:03.61\00:57:04.98 first hour there, Brother Gilley.
