Welcome to Zephyrhills, Florida. 00:00:22.16\00:00:24.49 And it is great to be in beautiful 00:00:24.52\00:00:26.87 Florida tonight, isn't that right, Danny? 00:00:26.90\00:00:28.34 It's wonderful here and it's about 72 degrees this evening. 00:00:28.37\00:00:30.92 Yeah. I was standing outside 00:00:30.95\00:00:33.36 without a coat on just with my short sleeve 00:00:33.39\00:00:36.34 and just absolutely drinking it in. 00:00:36.37\00:00:39.33 And I just want to rub it in to all of those of you 00:00:39.36\00:00:41.94 back in Illinois and we're so happy. 00:00:41.97\00:00:46.30 You know, Danny, 00:00:46.33\00:00:47.70 one thing I've realized is you have to do planning. 00:00:47.73\00:00:52.61 When you're planning a schedule you don't plan to be in Chicago, 00:00:52.64\00:00:57.21 New York or Washington this time of the year. 00:00:57.24\00:01:01.06 And summer time you don't plan to be 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.47 down here necessarily either. 00:01:03.50\00:01:05.44 But we're just having a wonderful time. 00:01:05.47\00:01:08.41 The people here in Florida are so hospitable. 00:01:08.44\00:01:11.18 And they're so nice to us. 00:01:11.21\00:01:13.10 And the folks at Florida hospital 00:01:13.13\00:01:15.63 are doing a fabulous job. 00:01:15.66\00:01:17.46 We're gonna be talking about that tonight 00:01:17.49\00:01:19.59 and about the health message 00:01:19.62\00:01:21.89 that God has given to His people. 00:01:21.92\00:01:24.76 And I'm really looking forward to this program 00:01:24.79\00:01:27.58 because there's some tremendous stories 00:01:27.61\00:01:30.97 that are going to be told. 00:01:31.00\00:01:32.73 And you know, Danny, 00:01:32.76\00:01:34.15 in television 3ABN has a very balanced schedule, 00:01:34.18\00:01:40.02 very balanced program. 00:01:40.05\00:01:42.27 We've got preaching and good preaching 00:01:42.30\00:01:44.90 and straight preaching. 00:01:44.93\00:01:46.74 We have exercise programs 00:01:46.77\00:01:48.32 that help people be physically fit. 00:01:48.35\00:01:51.17 And we have cooking schools. We have nutrition programs. 00:01:51.20\00:01:56.07 And we have programs that try to help people to be healthier. 00:01:56.10\00:01:59.67 And tonight, we're gonna bring you 00:01:59.70\00:02:02.46 a special program called "A Healthy Hundred." 00:02:02.49\00:02:06.23 We need to say a very special hello to a friend of ours. 00:02:06.26\00:02:10.44 You talked about Chicago a moment ago. 00:02:10.47\00:02:12.40 Our buddy John Lomacang is stuck 00:02:12.43\00:02:14.08 under 2 feet of snow-- Yes. 00:02:14.11\00:02:15.62 In Chicago and we wanna say hi to you, John, 00:02:15.65\00:02:18.17 but this is a very, very special "Nightlight." 00:02:18.20\00:02:20.16 It is. You know and I wanted to say this. 00:02:20.19\00:02:22.06 You know, when you look at the Adventist 00:02:22.09\00:02:24.01 system of beliefs-- Yeah. 00:02:24.04\00:02:25.91 They were those who said that well, 00:02:25.94\00:02:27.31 the Lord just gave us these beliefs. 00:02:27.34\00:02:29.58 But the truth is men and women went to the scriptures 00:02:29.61\00:02:32.91 and searched and found the beliefs. 00:02:32.94\00:02:34.53 But there are two things that came directly 00:02:34.56\00:02:37.02 from the hand of God, through vision to Ellen White. 00:02:37.05\00:02:39.96 One was the publishing work. That's right. 00:02:39.99\00:02:41.91 Growing and moved around the world. 00:02:41.94\00:02:43.95 The other was the health ministry. 00:02:43.98\00:02:48.32 We operate one of the largest 00:02:48.35\00:02:50.10 health hospital systems in the world. 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.58 And it has been a blessing 00:02:53.61\00:02:54.98 not only to Seventh-day Adventist as we'll see tonight 00:02:55.01\00:02:57.27 but to the community at large. 00:02:57.30\00:02:58.94 This ministry has helped untold millions inside the church 00:02:58.97\00:03:03.40 and outside of the church. 00:03:03.43\00:03:04.80 Everybody we have touched has been helped 00:03:04.83\00:03:06.57 with this health message 00:03:06.60\00:03:08.02 which is really a health ministry. 00:03:08.05\00:03:09.77 It really is. It gives a great advantage 00:03:09.80\00:03:13.08 and I think Ellen White made a statement similar to this. 00:03:13.11\00:03:15.82 The health message is as a right arm is to the body. 00:03:15.85\00:03:18.95 And I understand that because a few years ago--of course, 00:03:18.98\00:03:21.99 we're always trying to get on new cable systems-- 00:03:22.02\00:03:23.96 we went to one of the largest cable companies 00:03:23.99\00:03:26.64 in America in New York city. 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.48 And the people there-- vice president of marketing said 00:03:28.51\00:03:32.55 we wanna watch the programming. 00:03:32.58\00:03:34.05 So for several weeks before we came, 00:03:34.08\00:03:35.91 Moses and I went to this large cable company. 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.92 They began to watch. Some of their employees began to watch. 00:03:39.95\00:03:42.31 And she said, "3ABN is the best kept secret in television." 00:03:42.34\00:03:46.59 And I said, "Why is that?" 00:03:46.62\00:03:47.99 She said, "You need to be on every cable station in America. 00:03:48.02\00:03:50.72 And I said, "Why?" 00:03:50.75\00:03:52.12 She said, "Because of your health message." 00:03:52.15\00:03:54.53 She said, "Because people will watch you." 00:03:54.56\00:03:56.64 We--all of these other-- many of these other networks, 00:03:56.67\00:03:59.55 the Christian networks, she says, 00:03:59.58\00:04:01.54 are all about what you're doing and how happy they are now. 00:04:01.57\00:04:05.52 And you're gonna go to heaven but 3ABN-- 00:04:05.55\00:04:07.89 she said atheist wanna watch it 00:04:07.92\00:04:09.56 because they care about their health. 00:04:09.59\00:04:11.23 She says, "Muslims will watch it, 00:04:11.26\00:04:12.79 the Jews will watch it, 00:04:12.82\00:04:14.19 Catholics will watch it because every one is interested 00:04:14.22\00:04:17.12 and you guys are so balanced." 00:04:17.15\00:04:18.56 And I remember that and I praise the Lord. 00:04:18.59\00:04:21.90 And I thought then this is opening doors 00:04:21.93\00:04:24.49 to get 3ABN on cable systems. 00:04:24.52\00:04:26.32 And you know, tonight we are going to meet people 00:04:26.35\00:04:28.63 from all faiths and all walks of life 00:04:28.66\00:04:32.08 who have been touched by this health message. 00:04:32.11\00:04:36.64 And to me that's a wonderful thing because we, you know, 00:04:36.67\00:04:40.87 people are at different stages in different places in life. 00:04:40.90\00:04:45.14 And--but we all need to have a greater measure of health. 00:04:45.17\00:04:51.21 I--this healthy hundred is such a tremendous thing. 00:04:51.24\00:04:55.03 My wife's parents are 96 and 95 respectively. 00:04:55.06\00:04:59.11 They've had tremendous health all of these years 00:04:59.14\00:05:02.49 and I really believe that if you can be healthier longer, 00:05:02.52\00:05:07.41 you know, you might live to be a hundred but you might spend 00:05:07.44\00:05:10.06 the last ten years in a nursing home on a bed. 00:05:10.09\00:05:13.64 You don't want that. 00:05:13.67\00:05:15.12 I was in a place one Sunday morning buying gasoline 00:05:15.15\00:05:19.60 and somebody who was running by and jogging. 00:05:19.63\00:05:24.33 And I said to the person as I was paying for my gas, 00:05:24.36\00:05:26.44 I said, "That's what I ought to be doing." 00:05:26.47\00:05:28.12 And they said, "Why?" And I said, "You'd live longer." 00:05:28.15\00:05:30.62 And they said, "No, you just die healthier." 00:05:30.65\00:05:33.07 And-- but you know something? 00:05:33.10\00:05:34.92 There's something good about dying healthier. 00:05:34.95\00:05:37.93 So you don't have those years of lying there like a vegetable 00:05:37.96\00:05:41.86 but you have active, good, healthy years right up until 00:05:41.89\00:05:46.52 it's time to go to sleep and wait for the resurrection. 00:05:46.55\00:05:50.41 Praise the Lord. Well, tonight, Jim, 00:05:50.44\00:05:51.81 as we all know we get to shine the spotlight 00:05:51.84\00:05:53.93 in our "Nightlight" series on one of the, dare we say, 00:05:53.96\00:05:57.59 flagship institutions of the Adventist health systems 00:05:57.62\00:06:00.09 that is Florida hospital. 00:06:00.12\00:06:01.49 We get to learn about the scope of the hospital, 00:06:01.52\00:06:03.81 the extent of the hospital, 00:06:03.84\00:06:05.21 the work and reach of the hospital 00:06:05.24\00:06:07.25 and the thousands, thousands 00:06:07.28\00:06:09.31 and thousands of lives that it is touching. 00:06:09.34\00:06:12.00 And I am excited because I know it's gonna be a good program. 00:06:12.03\00:06:14.05 We're gonna hear a lot of good stories this night. 00:06:14.08\00:06:15.97 Yes, we really are. 00:06:16.00\00:06:17.37 And I believe that I am correct this 00:06:17.40\00:06:19.41 that the Florida hospital system 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.06 is the largest of the Adventist health systems. 00:06:21.09\00:06:24.63 And it has gotten even larger lately 00:06:24.66\00:06:28.83 with the inclusion of a few more hospitals 00:06:28.86\00:06:32.63 here in this very community in the Tampa Florida area. 00:06:32.66\00:06:36.80 And so we're gonna hear about those a little later on. 00:06:36.83\00:06:40.34 But right now, I want to introduce 00:06:40.37\00:06:43.03 to you Dr. Desmond Cummings. 00:06:43.06\00:06:46.19 And Dr. Cummings is head of Creation Health 00:06:46.22\00:06:50.45 and he is the president of the Florida hospital foundation 00:06:50.48\00:06:55.22 and he is the vice president of Adventist health systems. 00:06:55.25\00:06:58.74 And, Des, we're just happy to have you with us tonight. 00:06:58.77\00:07:02.67 And I know you've brought some guests 00:07:02.70\00:07:04.25 because we have met some of them already. 00:07:04.28\00:07:07.21 Welcome, Jim, to Florida. 00:07:07.24\00:07:09.06 On behalf of the Adventist health systems 00:07:09.09\00:07:10.88 welcome to "A Healthy Hundred." 00:07:10.91\00:07:12.28 We want you to imagine that for your life 00:07:12.31\00:07:14.31 and it sounds like your in-laws are already ahead of you. 00:07:14.34\00:07:17.49 They really are and they always stay ahead of me. 00:07:17.52\00:07:21.30 At 96--one of the things we looked at, Jim, 00:07:21.33\00:07:24.12 was the fact that America is in a health crisis. 00:07:24.15\00:07:27.42 And we need the healthcare reform throughout the nation 00:07:27.45\00:07:30.29 and lot of that is going to be around legislation. 00:07:30.32\00:07:32.38 But the most important thing 00:07:32.41\00:07:33.78 we can do is help people live healthier. 00:07:33.81\00:07:35.59 And the way that we think 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.02 that will help them live healthier is to realize 00:07:37.05\00:07:39.82 there's an opportunity to add at least 11 more years to your life 00:07:39.85\00:07:43.25 if you follow what we're gonna share tonight. 00:07:43.28\00:07:45.34 So we invite them to imagine a healthy hundred. 00:07:45.37\00:07:47.73 The reason for that is because in 2005, 00:07:47.76\00:07:52.34 there was an alert sounded by 00:07:52.37\00:07:53.98 the National Institutes of Health. 00:07:54.01\00:07:55.46 They said that a child born in 2005 would live five years less 00:07:55.60\00:08:00.57 than the life expectancy at that time. 00:08:00.60\00:08:02.75 Life expectancy 2005, life expectancy 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.30 for all of us is 78 years, for the average American. 00:08:05.33\00:08:09.40 Life expectancy for those children 00:08:09.43\00:08:10.89 was projected by the N.I.H. to be 73 years. 00:08:10.92\00:08:14.12 I cannot imagine any parent in America sitting down 00:08:14.15\00:08:17.22 with their children and saying, 00:08:17.25\00:08:18.62 "You're gonna live shorter than I did. 00:08:18.65\00:08:20.35 You're gonna have more disease than I did." 00:08:20.38\00:08:22.22 We have taken great satisfaction in sitting down 00:08:22.25\00:08:24.56 with our children and saying, "You're gonna live longer. 00:08:24.59\00:08:26.98 You're gonna live better 00:08:27.01\00:08:28.38 because we've done our best to leave you a better future." 00:08:28.41\00:08:30.82 And I think that's what Americans want to say. 00:08:30.85\00:08:32.90 So instead of accepting a 73 as the destination, 00:08:32.93\00:08:36.54 we believe it's time to imagine a healthy hundred. 00:08:37.09\00:08:39.62 If you're running for any office I'll vote for you. 00:08:39.65\00:08:42.03 I like what I'm hearing. 00:08:42.06\00:08:44.46 Well, as matter of fact, I'm not running for office 00:08:44.49\00:08:46.69 but I'm running for this 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.09 and that is the hope of a different kind of health reform. 00:08:48.12\00:08:51.85 Because you see the Adventist Health System was born in 1866 00:08:51.88\00:08:55.48 in the midst of this nation's need for health reform. 00:08:55.51\00:08:58.37 In fact, our very first institution was called 00:08:58.40\00:09:01.11 the Western Health Reform Institute 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.72 because we needed a health reform. 00:09:03.75\00:09:05.12 We led America in health reform in two significant areas. 00:09:05.15\00:09:08.53 One was smoking cessation because we never 00:09:08.56\00:09:12.02 believed in any kind of use of smoking. 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.67 Now that was just against the tradition of the day. 00:09:14.70\00:09:17.64 If you went to the doctors of the day 00:09:17.67\00:09:19.40 and you had a cough the most common prescription was-- 00:09:19.43\00:09:22.00 when you begin coughing, smoke two cigarettes immediately. 00:09:22.03\00:09:25.68 So you can imagine how ridiculous that was. 00:09:25.71\00:09:28.19 We said no because we took a different approach. 00:09:28.22\00:09:30.79 We looked and took our message from creation health. 00:09:30.82\00:09:34.35 The whole story of creation-- 00:09:34.38\00:09:35.84 I believed that the visions of Ellen White 00:09:35.87\00:09:38.14 and the ideas of her husband James 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.46 could be traced to the roots of the biblical story of creation. 00:09:40.49\00:09:44.46 And so what we're saying to people in America 00:09:44.49\00:09:46.81 today is you know what? 00:09:46.84\00:09:48.88 We can either create health reform 00:09:48.91\00:09:51.08 by refusing to get people care. 00:09:51.11\00:09:53.03 That's called rationing. 00:09:53.06\00:09:54.69 Or we can create health reform 00:09:54.72\00:09:56.28 by improving the health of people 00:09:56.31\00:09:57.81 and not needing as much care. 00:09:57.84\00:09:59.80 And we think the future is improving. 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.51 And reason we're excited about that is because you see 00:10:02.54\00:10:05.79 Adventists have been recognized 00:10:05.82\00:10:07.57 as being able to live 11 years longer. 00:10:07.60\00:10:10.08 In fact, U.S. news in world report said, 00:10:10.11\00:10:12.60 "If you want to live to 100, 00:10:12.63\00:10:14.09 live like a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:10:14.12\00:10:16.25 That's right. This has been recognized 00:10:16.28\00:10:18.01 not only with U.S. news and world report. 00:10:18.04\00:10:20.26 National Geographic, ABC news, Oprah, Doctor Oz, 00:10:20.29\00:10:25.01 they are all recognizing 00:10:25.04\00:10:26.87 the advantage of the Adventist health message. 00:10:26.90\00:10:29.79 Well, right now we want you to look at a one minute video. 00:10:29.82\00:10:33.63 Imagine living a healthy 100 years 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.76 by creating a new era of wellness 00:11:21.79\00:11:24.32 and medical innovation. 00:11:24.35\00:11:25.76 Florida hospital can help make it happen. 00:11:25.79\00:11:28.84 What do you want to do when you're 100? 00:11:28.87\00:11:32.07 Visit healthy100.org. 00:11:32.10\00:11:34.84 Well, Des, we've come a long way 00:11:37.77\00:11:39.66 since the days when Adventists pioneer 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.54 Jay and Love Brooke got paid for a summer's work 00:11:41.57\00:11:44.46 with a bottle of liquor and a ham. 00:11:44.49\00:11:48.93 The Lord has taught us some things about health. 00:11:48.96\00:11:50.98 We've got some laws of health. 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.48 Some principles of health and they start with a 'c'. 00:11:52.51\00:11:55.46 Why don't you walk us through that and introduce your guests? 00:11:55.49\00:11:57.86 Absolutely. Thank you, C.A. 00:11:57.89\00:11:59.78 As a matter of fact, the laws of health 00:11:59.81\00:12:01.35 that we've taken our eight principles of health 00:12:01.38\00:12:03.42 from the Seven Days of Creation. 00:12:03.45\00:12:05.37 As we studied the creation story we found these eight principles 00:12:05.40\00:12:09.25 really comprised the Adventist health message. 00:12:09.28\00:12:12.75 We've been practicing these principles and teaching them. 00:12:12.78\00:12:15.19 They actually spelled the word creation. 00:12:15.22\00:12:18.15 The 'c'--each one of the letters of this series of principles 00:12:18.18\00:12:22.41 stands for some significant portion of the creation story. 00:12:22.44\00:12:25.94 The first one is choice and choice is a powerful story. 00:12:25.97\00:12:29.74 Right here before me are folks that are living it today 00:12:29.77\00:12:33.20 because you see I am introducing 00:12:33.23\00:12:35.58 you to Kathy Moorman and Peter Bath. 00:12:35.61\00:12:38.77 Kathy now lives and works in Tampa 00:12:38.80\00:12:42.28 in the university community hospital. 00:12:42.31\00:12:44.49 And the Adventist Health System has been invited to be a partner 00:12:44.52\00:12:47.17 with the university community hospital. 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.27 And we've just joined with you to operate that hospital. 00:12:49.30\00:12:53.10 Peter is coming there 00:12:53.13\00:12:54.67 as the vice president for Mission and Ministry. 00:12:54.70\00:12:57.37 Now, Peter, you're introducing people 00:12:57.40\00:12:59.39 to the Adventist perspective and they're making choices. 00:12:59.42\00:13:02.48 But the first choice this community made 00:13:02.51\00:13:04.42 was they wanted Adventist to be there 00:13:04.45\00:13:06.37 because they like the whole idea of our 00:13:06.40\00:13:08.74 whole personal care and our wellness ideas. 00:13:08.77\00:13:12.16 Am I right about that, Kathy? Yes, you are. 00:13:12.19\00:13:15.42 In fact, Peter started his weekly Lunch and Learns 00:13:15.45\00:13:20.16 right after--I think it was in October 00:13:20.19\00:13:22.70 and he did a couple of in services 00:13:22.73\00:13:24.67 on the history of the Adventist 00:13:24.70\00:13:26.07 and then he started talking about Creation Health. 00:13:26.10\00:13:28.82 And the first chapter was choice. 00:13:28.85\00:13:30.54 The second one was rest. 00:13:30.57\00:13:32.23 And we came and we listened, then we went and we read. 00:13:32.26\00:13:36.07 And I've adopted it. 00:13:36.10\00:13:39.24 So, Peter, you've been doing these Lunch and Learns. 00:13:39.27\00:13:42.01 Kathy came to him. She got the book. 00:13:42.04\00:13:44.07 She started reading it. And, as she just said, she adopted it. 00:13:44.10\00:13:46.68 Tell me about the Lunch and Learns 00:13:46.71\00:13:48.08 and the reaction you've had among folks 00:13:48.11\00:13:50.07 who have attended them. 00:13:50.10\00:13:51.47 Well, on September 1 of last year 00:13:51.50\00:13:53.52 we walked in as new partners 00:13:53.55\00:13:55.49 with the five hospitals of University Community Health. 00:13:55.52\00:13:58.26 And so often is the case--just like 3ABN is the one of the best 00:13:58.49\00:14:02.39 kept secrets and so is the Adventist health message 00:14:02.42\00:14:04.82 and who are Adventists and so these Lunch and Learns-- 00:14:04.85\00:14:07.36 Did you know who Adventists were before this? 00:14:07.39\00:14:09.95 I googled. You googled. 00:14:09.98\00:14:12.59 So you found out on Google. 00:14:12.62\00:14:14.11 So, Peter, you had an education process 00:14:14.14\00:14:16.34 to just introduce people-- To the whole idea. 00:14:16.37\00:14:18.30 Absolutely, Des. 00:14:18.33\00:14:19.70 To look at our history, to look at our belief, 00:14:19.73\00:14:21.15 to look at our theology, 00:14:21.18\00:14:22.55 to look at our Christ centered focus 00:14:22.58\00:14:24.17 and the intentional application 00:14:24.20\00:14:25.80 of biblical principles to how we live. 00:14:25.83\00:14:28.41 And it's met with a wonderful context of faith. 00:14:28.44\00:14:31.28 Now you chose Creation Health 00:14:31.31\00:14:32.68 as one of the means to make peopleaware of that. Why? 00:14:32.71\00:14:35.74 Well, because Creation Health is such a practical process I mean, 00:14:35.77\00:14:38.85 it gets down to the fundamental points of taking 00:14:38.88\00:14:41.66 biblical teaching, just like we change our oil in the car 00:14:41.69\00:14:44.84 because the manufacturer tells us to do it every 3000 miles. 00:14:44.87\00:14:47.84 God's given us the same instruction 00:14:47.87\00:14:49.72 and following that has been a great-- 00:14:49.75\00:14:51.77 Creation Health is a wonderful way. 00:14:51.80\00:14:53.46 Now Kathy took the book I distributed in November 00:14:53.49\00:14:56.41 and we talked about it. 00:14:56.44\00:14:57.81 And Kathy then took this book and started reading it. 00:14:57.84\00:15:00.94 And what happened to you over the holidays? 00:15:00.97\00:15:03.63 Well, I read the book and I adopted-- 00:15:03.66\00:15:06.42 well, I focused on three things. 00:15:06.45\00:15:08.41 Nutrition, rest, and interpersonal relationships. 00:15:08.44\00:15:11.55 And so first I started on eating out there. 00:15:11.58\00:15:14.21 And then getting a good night sleep 00:15:14.24\00:15:16.53 which was very hard for me 00:15:16.56\00:15:17.93 because I had not been doing that. 00:15:17.96\00:15:19.53 And then over the holidays I said, 00:15:19.74\00:15:21.52 "I'm gonna focus on my family and my relationships. 00:15:21.55\00:15:23.86 I got rid of all of the extraneous stuff 00:15:23.89\00:15:26.35 and it was a wonderful, peaceful, loving experience. 00:15:26.38\00:15:29.44 So you really had a Creation Health Christmas? I did. 00:15:29.47\00:15:32.42 Kathy is the director of Pharmacy Services 00:15:32.45\00:15:34.66 which is an incredibly complex job. 00:15:34.69\00:15:36.75 And she is handing out medicine to sick people. 00:15:36.78\00:15:39.32 And she's saying, "Hey, here's a way we can stay well." 00:15:39.35\00:15:42.31 Now not only that, you're a scientist. 00:15:42.34\00:15:44.29 So you take a look inside the book 00:15:44.32\00:15:46.11 and try to tear it apart from the science standpoint. 00:15:46.14\00:15:48.44 What did you find? 00:15:48.47\00:15:49.87 I found that it was a very soundly 00:15:49.90\00:15:52.39 based especially the rest and nutrition. 00:15:52.42\00:15:54.97 And really studied the nutrition part 00:15:55.00\00:15:57.82 because that's what I needed the most help with. 00:15:57.85\00:15:59.95 And when I read it and I studied and I looked at the whole 00:15:59.98\00:16:04.14 balance of groceries--your groceries, your drugstore, 00:16:04.17\00:16:07.80 eating organic, eating fruits and vegetables, 00:16:08.29\00:16:11.11 it's made a tremendous difference. 00:16:11.14\00:16:12.51 I have a lot more energy and I rest better at night. 00:16:12.54\00:16:16.03 You are telling me that you also have some folks 00:16:16.06\00:16:17.92 that you've helped regain their health 00:16:17.95\00:16:19.41 because you're actually counseling them. 00:16:19.44\00:16:20.97 They're asking you what to do. 00:16:21.00\00:16:22.44 Yeah, well, I have a friend at work who's chronically got cold. 00:16:22.47\00:16:27.28 Cold--and I talked to her about the nutrition 00:16:27.31\00:16:29.82 and I gave her some references. 00:16:29.85\00:16:32.13 And she took it and she actually went to the drugstore-- 00:16:32.16\00:16:34.44 the health food store to get 00:16:34.47\00:16:35.84 some of the stuff that I recommended. 00:16:35.87\00:16:37.67 So you started out with us as a business partner, 00:16:37.70\00:16:41.16 moved to a mission partner. 00:16:41.19\00:16:42.78 And now you see this as a lifestyle partner. 00:16:42.81\00:16:46.06 I really think this is the best thing 00:16:46.09\00:16:47.48 we could do for the healthcare 00:16:47.51\00:16:48.88 'cause we're not just treating sick people. 00:16:48.91\00:16:50.66 We're treating the whole person. 00:16:50.69\00:16:52.54 And that is the unique difference 00:16:52.57\00:16:54.09 of the Adventist health system. 00:16:54.12\00:16:55.49 And that's why Kathy made that choice. 00:16:55.52\00:16:57.70 Kathy, the question I wanted to ask you. 00:16:57.73\00:16:59.86 Were these changes dramatic or traumatic 00:16:59.89\00:17:02.49 for you to institute these changes? 00:17:02.52\00:17:04.50 And were the results immediate? 00:17:04.53\00:17:06.27 Was it something that came over a long period of time 00:17:06.30\00:17:08.20 or could you see the results right away? 00:17:08.23\00:17:10.51 Uh, some of the results I saw right away. 00:17:10.54\00:17:12.58 The sleeping-- getting--making-- 00:17:12.61\00:17:14.32 forcing myself to go to bed at a reasonable hour. 00:17:14.35\00:17:17.99 The nutrition took a little bit longer. 00:17:18.02\00:17:20.09 It was little bit harder to adopt. 00:17:20.12\00:17:22.31 The quiet environment has been tremendous 00:17:22.34\00:17:24.99 as far as reducing the stress and the anxiety of my life. 00:17:25.02\00:17:28.45 And when you said quiet environment 00:17:28.48\00:17:29.85 you're saying you adopted a personal quiet time, 00:17:29.88\00:17:32.38 a personal devotional life? 00:17:32.41\00:17:33.78 Yes. Yes. 00:17:33.81\00:17:35.18 What a blessing to be able to not only deal with the mind, 00:17:35.21\00:17:37.47 the body, and the spirit and you told me you thought 00:17:37.50\00:17:39.25 that was big difference in the Adventist healthcare philosophy. 00:17:39.28\00:17:43.97 So, Kathy, it's great to have you with us. 00:17:44.00\00:17:45.86 Thank you for choosing to be a lifestyle partner, 00:17:45.89\00:17:48.25 a mission partner and a business partner. 00:17:48.28\00:17:50.45 May God bless you as you continue to advance your life. 00:17:50.48\00:17:52.97 Peter, may God bless you as you share this message. 00:17:53.00\00:17:55.53 Absolutely, it's a blessing. Thank you. 00:17:55.56\00:17:57.22 And now-- I guess we're gonna take a little walk. 00:17:57.25\00:17:59.72 Absolutely. One of the things, C.A., 00:17:59.75\00:18:02.20 that I think is so vital for people is to really 00:18:02.23\00:18:04.84 understand the depth, a purpose and meaning. 00:18:04.87\00:18:08.86 And I have a friend Dr. Julie vanPutten. 00:18:08.89\00:18:12.58 I'd like to introduce you to her. 00:18:12.61\00:18:13.98 I gonna put you on-- in the middle there. 00:18:14.01\00:18:15.43 Julie, welcome. Hello. 00:18:15.46\00:18:17.71 Dr. vanPutten, would you meet C.A.? 00:18:17.74\00:18:20.03 And as a matter of fact, Dr. vanPutten is 00:18:20.06\00:18:22.46 the chief wellness officer or the Florida Hospital 00:18:22.49\00:18:25.80 Institute of Lifestyle Medicine. 00:18:25.83\00:18:28.02 And she has one question she asks folks 00:18:28.05\00:18:30.82 when they come to their-- as a matter of fact, 00:18:30.85\00:18:33.17 when we start our physical it's a very unusual question. 00:18:33.20\00:18:35.72 I didn't anticipate this question 00:18:35.75\00:18:37.59 but you ask them a question about their biggest choice. 00:18:37.62\00:18:40.35 And one of those questions is, 00:18:40.38\00:18:43.29 do you really want to live a long and healthy life? 00:18:43.32\00:18:49.48 Yeah, I can answer that one. That's easy. 00:18:49.51\00:18:52.07 Okay, what's the next one? 00:18:52.10\00:18:53.47 And so the question that follows that is based on your choices 00:18:53.50\00:18:59.16 do you expect to live a long, healthy life? 00:18:59.19\00:19:02.37 Good question. Well, not again. 00:19:02.40\00:19:05.10 Can you pass on any of these? 00:19:05.13\00:19:06.81 No, this is not a pass but then the most 00:19:06.84\00:19:09.62 compelling question is what is the reason? 00:19:09.65\00:19:12.48 What is the compelling reason that you would want 00:19:12.51\00:19:15.87 to live a long and healthy life? 00:19:15.90\00:19:17.95 What is the reason to want to live? 00:19:17.98\00:19:21.10 I think that, you know, 00:19:21.13\00:19:22.50 that's really the core of the way life is driven. 00:19:22.53\00:19:24.96 Because many more of these 00:19:24.99\00:19:28.92 scientific journals are showing that the purpose in life 00:19:28.95\00:19:31.83 and the willingness to pursue life is 00:19:31.86\00:19:33.78 what causes people to be able to fight through disease, 00:19:33.81\00:19:36.63 to be able to choose to live longer and more effectively. 00:19:36.66\00:19:40.02 Absolutely, we know that the reason, 00:19:40.05\00:19:43.16 the reason that someone has within themselves 00:19:43.19\00:19:46.44 really gives us the indication of what is your plan to be here. 00:19:46.47\00:19:50.16 We often have plans for our bank accounts 00:19:50.19\00:19:52.89 and for buying that house 00:19:52.92\00:19:54.66 and for looking at our children graduate 00:19:54.69\00:19:57.32 but when you look at your plan, 00:19:57.35\00:19:58.85 your daily plan for your life does it reflect truly 00:19:58.88\00:20:01.96 at its heart that you have a plan to say 00:20:01.99\00:20:04.53 that at my next ten, at the next tenth birthday-- 00:20:04.56\00:20:08.55 for many of us that's thirty, right? 00:20:08.58\00:20:10.85 Or 40 or whatever that is. 00:20:10.88\00:20:13.75 Do you see that in your body you can be stronger, 00:20:13.78\00:20:16.77 you can be more alive, you can feel like 00:20:16.80\00:20:20.21 you're living according to the purpose that God put you here? 00:20:20.24\00:20:23.51 That's a wonderful question for a doctor to be asking, 00:20:23.54\00:20:25.61 don't you think? Very much so. 00:20:25.64\00:20:27.32 As a matter of fact, when you talk about a plan-- 00:20:27.35\00:20:30.18 when you have actually have the exit interview-- 00:20:30.21\00:20:32.84 Yes. Because you had it with me. Yes. 00:20:32.87\00:20:35.09 You actually ask folks to do something about a plan. 00:20:35.12\00:20:38.20 Explain that. When we look at the plan 00:20:38.23\00:20:40.54 we know that if you were to look backward at your life 00:20:40.57\00:20:44.47 and we would ask you what would be three life lessons. 00:20:44.50\00:20:47.51 That if someone where writing your story 00:20:47.54\00:20:49.71 and actually does with the choices that 00:20:49.74\00:20:52.37 we make everyday, we write our story. 00:20:52.40\00:20:54.97 Powerful, yes. Everyday we're telling a story about 00:20:55.00\00:20:57.90 what we believe is possible. 00:20:57.93\00:20:59.66 And we say if you're gonna write a story write an epic story. 00:20:59.69\00:21:03.61 Make it a wonderful story because the way 00:21:03.64\00:21:06.14 we live our lives is as a result of the stories 00:21:06.17\00:21:09.55 we believe about our lives. 00:21:09.58\00:21:11.51 And so in our exit interview with our clients, 00:21:11.54\00:21:14.57 with many of these corporate executives 00:21:14.60\00:21:16.37 who have very high pressured lives, 00:21:16.40\00:21:19.09 we say, "what are the life lessons 00:21:19.12\00:21:21.04 that you would want your life to tell a story about?" 00:21:21.07\00:21:24.58 And when you know what those life lessons are, 00:21:24.61\00:21:26.93 if you're very clear about that then 00:21:26.96\00:21:29.95 what do you see a year from now? 00:21:29.98\00:21:32.54 And if you can have a vision of your life a year from now, 00:21:32.57\00:21:36.04 a year from now in which you're stronger and healthier 00:21:36.07\00:21:38.70 and more vital, when you look at 00:21:38.73\00:21:41.01 the risk factors that you are doing to yourself. 00:21:41.04\00:21:43.89 Nobody else is doing these to you. 00:21:43.92\00:21:45.56 By what you're choosing to do 00:21:45.59\00:21:46.96 or by what you're not choosing to do. 00:21:46.99\00:21:49.52 In the next 21 days if I were to ask you to do 00:21:49.55\00:21:52.84 something different, something that you've never done before, 00:21:52.87\00:21:56.54 in the next 21 days can you put together a plan for your life 00:21:56.57\00:22:01.86 that says you have a story that's says I wanna live? 00:22:01.89\00:22:05.17 So you see what a powerful thing happens. 00:22:05.20\00:22:07.43 The privilege that we have and Dr. vanPutten has. 00:22:07.46\00:22:11.00 We see over 500 top corporate executives of the Fortune 500. 00:22:11.03\00:22:17.34 Fortune 500 executives, 500 that have come to our place 00:22:17.37\00:22:21.40 and the Lord has given us an opportunity 00:22:21.43\00:22:22.97 to ask these kinds of questions. 00:22:23.00\00:22:24.87 Aren't you thankful that a Christian doctor is sitting 00:22:24.90\00:22:27.38 with these leaders asking these kinds of questions 00:22:27.41\00:22:29.92 about how choice is being made in their life? 00:22:29.95\00:22:32.98 And my question for you is how would you answer Dr. vanPutten? 00:22:33.01\00:22:38.02 Well, there is a big, big song 00:22:38.05\00:22:40.17 about a great big God and how great he is. 00:22:40.20\00:22:44.08 C.A., that's one of the first choices we make. 00:22:44.11\00:22:47.46 Amen. It truly is. 00:22:47.49\00:22:48.86 Jennifer LaMountain comes now to sing for us. 00:22:48.89\00:22:51.68 One of the best choices we can make is to choose God 00:22:51.71\00:22:54.00 and put him front and center in our lives. 00:22:54.03\00:22:57.70 Thank you, Jennifer. 00:22:57.73\00:22:59.10 Though man may try to go 00:23:28.11\00:23:33.59 Beyond the reach of space 00:23:33.62\00:23:39.08 To crawl beyond the distant 00:23:39.11\00:23:45.46 Glimmering stars 00:23:45.49\00:23:50.84 This world's a room so small 00:23:50.87\00:23:56.92 Within my Master's house 00:23:56.95\00:24:01.73 The open sky 00:24:01.76\00:24:05.78 It's but a portion of His yard 00:24:05.81\00:24:13.12 The winter's chill 00:24:13.15\00:24:17.39 May cause the tiny seed to fall 00:24:17.42\00:24:24.26 To lie asleep till 00:24:24.29\00:24:29.03 Waked by summer's rain 00:24:29.06\00:24:36.00 The heart grown cold will warm 00:24:36.03\00:24:41.67 And throb with life anew 00:24:41.70\00:24:46.74 The Master's touch 00:24:46.77\00:24:51.30 will bring the glow again 00:24:51.33\00:24:57.56 How big is God 00:24:57.59\00:25:02.71 How big and wide His vast domain 00:25:02.74\00:25:09.92 To try to tell 00:25:09.95\00:25:14.27 these lips can only start 00:25:14.30\00:25:21.07 He's big enough to rule 00:25:21.10\00:25:26.93 His mighty universe 00:25:26.96\00:25:32.26 Yet small enough 00:25:32.29\00:25:36.71 to live within my heart 00:25:36.74\00:25:43.31 How big is God 00:25:43.34\00:25:49.34 How big is God 00:25:49.37\00:25:54.63 How big is God 00:25:54.66\00:26:02.63 How great thou art 00:26:11.67\00:26:17.59 How great thou art 00:26:17.62\00:26:23.37 Then sings my soul 00:26:23.40\00:26:28.41 My Savior God to thee 00:26:28.44\00:26:34.57 How great thou art 00:26:34.60\00:26:41.09 How great thou art 00:26:41.12\00:26:49.09 Great is thy faithfulness 00:26:51.71\00:26:57.27 How great thou art 00:26:57.30\00:27:03.66 How great thou art 00:27:03.69\00:27:11.66 Thank you so much, Jennifer. What a blessing. 00:27:27.20\00:27:29.67 And now this is not only Jennifer's talent 00:27:29.70\00:27:33.08 but her husband Lynell is our 00:27:33.11\00:27:35.78 senior manager of our outreach to churches 00:27:35.81\00:27:38.52 and in particular specializing 00:27:38.55\00:27:40.01 in Seventh-day Adventist churches. 00:27:40.04\00:27:41.41 You are a dynamic power couple teamed up to make 00:27:41.44\00:27:45.01 this Creation Health message come to life in churches 00:27:45.04\00:27:48.35 but the second letter of the acronym, 00:27:48.38\00:27:50.96 if you look at the creation story it begins with choice. 00:27:50.99\00:27:54.67 Two trees in the middle of the garden, 00:27:54.70\00:27:57.02 we have to make our choice. 00:27:57.05\00:27:58.48 God gave us the freedom of choices. 00:27:58.51\00:28:00.27 It's a wonderful power that he imputes us with. 00:28:00.30\00:28:03.11 Making that choice day by day is critical. 00:28:03.14\00:28:05.59 As a matter of fact, some people say, 00:28:05.62\00:28:08.14 "Choice doesn't matter. Your genes are what matters." 00:28:08.17\00:28:11.03 Recent researches showing that up to 75% and some say 90%-- 00:28:11.06\00:28:15.80 in fact, Dan Buettner, the author of the "Blue Zone" 00:28:15.83\00:28:18.69 says 90% of your health is depended upon your daily choice. 00:28:18.72\00:28:22.94 So, my friends, God gave us choice 00:28:22.97\00:28:25.13 because he wants us to exercise it. 00:28:25.16\00:28:26.90 And by exercising it you can achieve great things. 00:28:26.93\00:28:30.40 And one of those choices is rest. 00:28:30.43\00:28:33.11 And, Lynell, you have a story about how people can get, 00:28:33.14\00:28:36.11 kind of, completely used up just doing good, even pastors. 00:28:36.14\00:28:41.51 And it's changed somebody's life. 00:28:41.54\00:28:43.01 One of my friends is a conference administrator 00:28:43.04\00:28:45.86 as well as an associated pastor of his local church. 00:28:45.89\00:28:47.79 A very large church, in fact but it's hard to believe 00:28:47.82\00:28:49.59 you can be Conference Administrator 00:28:49.62\00:28:51.12 and an Associate Pastor. 00:28:51.15\00:28:52.58 And the story I'm finding is, kind of, typical as I work 00:28:52.61\00:28:54.83 with many administrators and pastors. 00:28:54.86\00:28:57.91 He was at a meeting where I recently shared 00:28:57.94\00:28:59.83 Creation Health's presentation on rest. 00:28:59.86\00:29:02.45 And, in particular, during that presentation 00:29:02.48\00:29:04.43 I shared some research most people don't know. 00:29:04.46\00:29:06.96 It's from Wingard and Berkman 00:29:06.99\00:29:08.55 and their mortality risk associated 00:29:08.58\00:29:10.35 with sleeping patterns among adults. 00:29:10.38\00:29:12.18 And what I shared was if you sleep fewer than 00:29:12.21\00:29:15.20 six hours a night or more than nine hours a night 00:29:15.23\00:29:18.22 you cut your lifespan by nine years. 00:29:18.25\00:29:20.68 Well, when the presentation was finished this administrator 00:29:20.71\00:29:23.37 wanted to go for a walk with me. 00:29:23.40\00:29:25.47 And he was very quiet and very reflective. 00:29:25.50\00:29:28.15 And he said, "You know," 00:29:28.18\00:29:29.59 he said, "I get to bed at 2 in the morning and I'm up at 6 00:29:29.62\00:29:32.65 because of all my church related responsibilities." 00:29:32.68\00:29:35.18 And he said, "My kids deserve better from their dad." 00:29:35.21\00:29:37.71 And he said, "I don't want to miss out 00:29:37.74\00:29:39.20 on nine years of life with them." 00:29:39.23\00:29:41.20 So on that day he committed to me 00:29:41.23\00:29:43.67 that he was going to build into his life a lifestyle of balance. 00:29:43.70\00:29:46.42 So he'd get the rest that he needed and deserved 00:29:46.55\00:29:48.51 so he can live life to the fullest with this family. 00:29:48.54\00:29:51.08 God bless you as you work with these ministers 00:29:51.11\00:29:53.05 and these churches and thank you for that insight and that story. 00:29:53.08\00:29:55.80 Thank you, Des. So thanks so much, Lynell. 00:29:55.83\00:29:57.89 And now I want to introduce you to a doctor and her daughter. 00:29:57.92\00:30:02.11 Dr. Elmore and her daughter Lilly 00:30:02.14\00:30:04.57 have actually experienced some of this, C.A. 00:30:04.60\00:30:07.64 Their story is all about the issue of rest. 00:30:07.67\00:30:11.51 I--I'm listening with bated breath. 00:30:11.54\00:30:13.53 When I was pastoring, I pastored a church of 2000 members 00:30:13.56\00:30:16.57 and communication at Sabbath school, 00:30:16.60\00:30:18.25 director for the conference. 00:30:18.28\00:30:20.01 So I'm spleey and I don't think I'll ever catch up again. 00:30:20.04\00:30:22.39 Hope I--the Lord is kind to me and gives me some extra years. 00:30:22.42\00:30:25.60 As a matter of fact, Dr. Elmore is really-- 00:30:25.63\00:30:28.71 you were at a point of exhaustion in your life 00:30:28.74\00:30:31.45 when Creation health came in. 00:30:31.48\00:30:32.85 But I don't want to start there. 00:30:32.88\00:30:34.25 I want to start back, roll the picture back to 2002. 00:30:34.28\00:30:37.16 You're living in Nashville, Tennessee. 00:30:37.19\00:30:39.23 What is your work there and what is your practice? 00:30:39.26\00:30:41.83 I'm practicing cosmetic dentistry. 00:30:41.86\00:30:43.98 You're practicing cosmetic dentistry. That's true. 00:30:44.01\00:30:46.16 That's for the more affluent people? Yes, sir. 00:30:46.19\00:30:48.69 And they are paying cash? Yes. 00:30:48.72\00:30:50.94 And so this is a very good business 00:30:50.97\00:30:52.47 to be in, right? Yes, sir. 00:30:52.50\00:30:53.87 And then suddenly it happens-- something happens in your life. 00:30:53.90\00:30:56.65 And you give birth to what? 00:30:56.68\00:30:59.15 I have a son that has been diagnosed with autism. 00:30:59.18\00:31:02.57 So baby boy-- Baby boy. 00:31:02.60\00:31:04.18 Diagnosed with autism. Yes, sir. 00:31:04.21\00:31:06.35 And this starts to completely change you. 00:31:06.38\00:31:09.26 So you begin to do what? 00:31:09.29\00:31:10.66 Just really looking for places where he can grow and develop. 00:31:13.08\00:31:16.48 And his needs were just not being met in Nashville 00:31:16.51\00:31:20.83 so I was looking all around the country 00:31:20.86\00:31:22.58 trying to find a place where he could have a good education. 00:31:22.61\00:31:25.57 And you found a place. And where was it? 00:31:25.60\00:31:27.60 In Jacksonville, Florida at the Jericho school. 00:31:27.63\00:31:29.71 Jericho school in Jacksonville, Florida. 00:31:29.74\00:31:32.03 But it would require you to move. 00:31:32.06\00:31:33.43 So what did you decide to do? 00:31:33.46\00:31:35.19 I thought none of this is going to matter 00:31:35.22\00:31:37.09 if my child can't be with me and can't be here to enjoy with me. 00:31:37.12\00:31:40.23 So we left everything and we moved to Florida. 00:31:40.26\00:31:42.78 Now, Lilly, you moved to Florida 00:31:42.81\00:31:44.94 for the sake of your little brother. 00:31:44.97\00:31:46.34 But that took a lot of things out of your life, too. 00:31:46.37\00:31:49.01 How did you make the move? 00:31:49.04\00:31:50.41 Well, I realized it was the best for him 00:31:50.44\00:31:52.39 and I love my brother so much and I would anything for him. 00:31:52.42\00:31:55.88 I'd, of course, pick up and leave which is what we did. 00:31:55.91\00:31:58.65 And I would do it anytime, you know. 00:31:58.68\00:32:00.21 So that was a great step of faith on both of your parts. 00:32:00.24\00:32:03.45 Now you're a single mom 00:32:03.48\00:32:04.96 and so you had to go there and you need to work. 00:32:04.99\00:32:07.81 But you cannot work 00:32:07.84\00:32:09.21 because your license won't transfer from Tennessee 00:32:09.24\00:32:11.78 and Florida is not an easy place 00:32:11.81\00:32:13.23 to get a dental license in oral surgery. 00:32:13.26\00:32:15.91 So you have a different work engagement now. 00:32:15.94\00:32:20.09 Describe what that is. 00:32:20.12\00:32:21.49 I started working for the Florida health departments. 00:32:21.52\00:32:23.86 And when I got there I realized, 00:32:23.89\00:32:25.53 oh, my goodness, all these children have such great needs 00:32:25.56\00:32:28.17 and especially the children with the disabilities 00:32:28.20\00:32:30.22 have no access to care. 00:32:30.25\00:32:32.09 So they have no access to care to speak up? 00:32:32.12\00:32:34.52 In Florida today at Shands hospital, 00:32:34.55\00:32:36.90 you were telling me what the waiting list 00:32:36.93\00:32:38.83 is for children with dental needs 00:32:38.86\00:32:41.18 that are on Medicaid that can't pay. 00:32:41.21\00:32:42.78 What is it? And have disabilities. 00:32:42.81\00:32:44.24 One of the moms I treated last week 00:32:44.27\00:32:46.17 at Florida hospital told me, there are over 00:32:46.20\00:32:48.56 a thousand children on the waiting list. 00:32:48.59\00:32:50.37 And they are told it would be over a year before 00:32:50.40\00:32:52.35 they are given an appointment 00:32:52.38\00:32:53.75 just for a consultation not for treatment, 00:32:53.78\00:32:55.72 just for a consultation. 00:32:55.75\00:32:57.12 A thousand children, that's huge need. 00:32:57.15\00:32:58.78 So you decided to change your practice? Yes, sir. 00:32:58.81\00:33:01.30 That decision took you to Florida hospital. 00:33:01.33\00:33:04.14 For we're --because you went to hospitals. 00:33:04.17\00:33:07.02 Nobody wanted to do it. 00:33:07.05\00:33:08.42 Nobody wanted to do it because, 00:33:08.45\00:33:10.31 C.A., this is not a money making business. 00:33:10.34\00:33:13.13 No, I think not. 00:33:13.16\00:33:14.82 It's not. People can't pay. 00:33:14.85\00:33:16.89 The government pays very poorly for these children. 00:33:16.92\00:33:20.35 And so you come to Florida hospital. 00:33:20.38\00:33:22.31 But now your background is not of a Christian faith. 00:33:22.34\00:33:25.37 So you come without a Christian faith background. 00:33:25.40\00:33:28.71 But you suddenly realize there's something happening there 00:33:28.74\00:33:31.68 because as you approached the director of surgery, 00:33:31.71\00:33:34.59 he tells you something because you describe the problem. 00:33:34.62\00:33:38.24 You know it's not making money. 00:33:38.27\00:33:39.64 You know that the surgery should actually, 00:33:39.67\00:33:41.43 probably, be stopped at the hospital. 00:33:41.46\00:33:43.46 But he says to you something different. What does he say? 00:33:43.49\00:33:45.53 He said, "Let the little children come unto me. 00:33:45.56\00:33:48.59 And do not turn them away." 00:33:48.62\00:33:50.57 So he said "I can't forget them. , suffer little children." 00:33:50.60\00:33:54.29 He actually quoted Jesus' statement. 00:33:54.32\00:33:57.11 Now that impressed you because you were walking by the chapel 00:33:57.14\00:33:59.91 on your way to surgery one day. 00:33:59.94\00:34:01.77 And as you're walking by that chapel on your way to surgery 00:34:01.80\00:34:04.08 you heard them singing, they invited you in. 00:34:04.11\00:34:06.30 And the pastor said something that really struck you. 00:34:06.33\00:34:09.40 Yes, his message that day and it's a group of engineers 00:34:09.43\00:34:13.28 that have a Friday morning prayer service. 00:34:13.31\00:34:15.94 And it was before my surgery time and I was just walking by. 00:34:15.97\00:34:18.67 I heard this beautiful singing in there. 00:34:18.70\00:34:20.50 And I stopped in and they said, 00:34:20.53\00:34:22.27 "Will you come and worship with us?" 00:34:22.30\00:34:23.77 And I said, "Sure." And the message that day was-- 00:34:23.80\00:34:29.56 I can't quote this as well as you did but-- 00:34:29.59\00:34:31.59 It's basically here Jesus is talking to the people 00:34:31.62\00:34:34.73 who went and saw the-- saw the--those imprisoned. 00:34:34.76\00:34:37.77 He said, "Because you went to see the least of these." 00:34:37.80\00:34:41.49 "When you do unto the least of these, you have done unto me." 00:34:41.52\00:34:46.66 And I thought this is such an amazing place. 00:34:46.69\00:34:49.53 People from the engineering department, 00:34:49.56\00:34:51.35 people from the director of surgery, 00:34:51.38\00:34:53.24 all have the same mission. 00:34:53.27\00:34:54.64 They're all on board with the same mission of helping. 00:34:54.67\00:34:57.60 Now, Lilly, your mother has made this a huge mission. 00:34:57.63\00:35:00.74 How many of these children has she done surgery on this year? 00:35:00.77\00:35:04.07 I think 380. 00:35:04.10\00:35:05.52 That's 380 but that's just a part of this year. 00:35:05.55\00:35:08.23 Last year, you did over what? 863. 00:35:08.26\00:35:11.24 863, so you are on a record pace 00:35:11.27\00:35:14.73 with you and your partner to try to care for these children. 00:35:14.76\00:35:18.17 But now you can get weary doing good. 00:35:18.20\00:35:21.42 And you're almost exhausted and it was 5:30 one morning. 00:35:21.45\00:35:24.53 You're driving into the physician's parking lot. 00:35:24.56\00:35:27.16 You are in a line and you are so tired. 00:35:27.19\00:35:29.76 You had leaned your head back on your head rest. 00:35:29.79\00:35:32.18 And what happens? 00:35:32.21\00:35:33.58 And I said, "God, I'm so tired." 00:35:33.61\00:35:35.13 And I opened my eyes and as I opened my eyes 00:35:35.16\00:35:37.34 I see the word "choice and rest." 00:35:37.37\00:35:39.58 I looked down and it says Des Cummings in it. 00:35:39.61\00:35:42.53 Went upstairs to the surgery department. 00:35:42.56\00:35:44.27 I called the Florida hospital foundation. 00:35:44.30\00:35:46.40 I said did Des Cummings write a book? 00:35:46.43\00:35:48.46 They said, "Yes." I said, "Well, can you send me a copy?" 00:35:48.49\00:35:53.23 So I had six copies sent to my house. 00:35:53.26\00:35:56.57 And the particular part of the book 00:35:56.60\00:35:59.03 that you really focused on was this rest part. 00:35:59.06\00:36:01.97 Now, Lilly, it started to affect you as well 00:36:02.00\00:36:04.56 because you all 00:36:04.59\00:36:05.96 decided not only were you going to chapel on Friday 00:36:05.99\00:36:08.72 but you followed that pastor on over to church on Sabbath. 00:36:08.75\00:36:12.06 Tell me about that, going to church on Sabbath. 00:36:12.09\00:36:14.60 Well, I loved the church because we got a hospital church 00:36:14.63\00:36:17.44 which is affiliated with Florida hospital 00:36:17.47\00:36:19.05 and the church is amazing. 00:36:19.08\00:36:21.41 Like, I've got involved. I taught a class. 00:36:21.44\00:36:24.39 It was really -- it's a really great church. 00:36:24.42\00:36:26.83 So here you go over to the church. 00:36:26.86\00:36:28.68 You begin to study 00:36:28.71\00:36:30.08 and even though you weren't 00:36:30.11\00:36:31.48 raised in a Christian background, 00:36:31.51\00:36:33.32 he suddenly just connected with you. 00:36:33.35\00:36:35.68 And one year ago, what happened in your life? 00:36:35.71\00:36:37.86 We joined the Florida hospital church. 00:36:37.89\00:36:39.57 You joined the Florida-- 00:36:39.60\00:36:40.97 so both of you are now members of the Florida hospital church. 00:36:41.00\00:36:43.78 And that whole experience has been 00:36:43.81\00:36:46.16 encapsulating the creation health into your life. 00:36:46.19\00:36:49.16 You're telling me that creation health 00:36:49.19\00:36:51.21 is not just the principle of rest. 00:36:51.24\00:36:53.86 It's the whole idea of being at peace with God. 00:36:53.89\00:36:57.20 And now your life is completely embedded in His life 00:36:57.23\00:37:01.83 and creation health has become your story. 00:37:01.86\00:37:04.00 Now, Lilly, you had an incident that's changed your life, too. 00:37:04.03\00:37:09.80 And you not only have joined the church 00:37:09.83\00:37:11.40 but you had a point in which your brother had an accident. 00:37:11.43\00:37:14.08 You were home taking care of him alone. 00:37:14.11\00:37:16.19 He had an accident. Tell us about that. 00:37:16.22\00:37:17.90 Well, my brother got in a shoulder accident 00:37:17.93\00:37:19.65 and he fractured his shoulder. 00:37:19.68\00:37:21.49 And it was the scariest thing ever. 00:37:21.52\00:37:23.60 And so my mom calls me and she's like what do we do? 00:37:23.63\00:37:25.96 Where do we take him? I'm like, this is pretty bad. 00:37:25.99\00:37:27.88 We need to go to the E.R. 00:37:27.91\00:37:29.28 So we go to the emergency room, I'm all by myself. 00:37:29.31\00:37:31.38 I'm taking care of my autistic brother. 00:37:31.41\00:37:34.19 And so it comes to the point we have to go in 00:37:34.22\00:37:36.30 and I told them--I said, 00:37:36.33\00:37:37.70 "I have my autistic brother. He just broke his shoulder." 00:37:37.73\00:37:40.41 So immediately they brought some people. 00:37:40.44\00:37:43.17 He wouldn't go in the back 00:37:43.20\00:37:44.57 'cause he's really scared, it is a scary thing. 00:37:44.60\00:37:47.42 And so they bring people from child life 00:37:47.45\00:37:49.61 which is like nurses that are trained to work 00:37:49.64\00:37:51.46 with these types of kids 00:37:51.49\00:37:52.86 and help them get acquainted with the hospital. 00:37:52.89\00:37:55.41 And he's fine. He gets back there and they care of him. 00:37:55.44\00:37:59.75 And it's amazing 00:37:59.78\00:38:01.15 how caring they are with all their patients. 00:38:01.18\00:38:03.19 And at this moment, at this moment, 00:38:03.22\00:38:05.62 you have not made a career choice yet. 00:38:05.65\00:38:08.22 So what happens to you about it at that moment? 00:38:08.25\00:38:10.53 Well, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. 00:38:10.56\00:38:12.34 And I have decided I want to be a dentist 00:38:12.37\00:38:15.11 or a hospital administrator. 00:38:15.14\00:38:17.08 Hospital administrator. I can recommend to you, 00:38:17.11\00:38:19.36 dentist, your mother will have to talk to you about that one. 00:38:19.39\00:38:21.88 But hospital administrator, yes. 00:38:21.91\00:38:23.95 Now you have a plan and you've decided 00:38:23.98\00:38:27.23 that you are going to go to a certain university. 00:38:27.26\00:38:29.18 Tell me what university? 00:38:29.21\00:38:30.58 I would like to go Southern Adventist University. 00:38:30.61\00:38:33.28 So God bless you as you as a family progress in your journey 00:38:33.31\00:38:37.98 towards the wonderful things that God can bring 00:38:38.01\00:38:40.78 through His Sabbath rest. 00:38:40.81\00:38:42.60 Just before they leave 00:38:42.63\00:38:44.00 and I would run a bit longer than the segment 00:38:44.03\00:38:45.40 but I wanted to congratulate you. 00:38:45.43\00:38:46.85 First on joining the remnant family of God. 00:38:46.88\00:38:50.20 But God gave you a gift several years ago of an autistic child. 00:38:50.23\00:38:53.45 Some people may see that as a burden 00:38:53.48\00:38:55.35 but to you it was a gift. 00:38:55.38\00:38:56.75 And then He moved you along 00:38:56.78\00:38:58.15 from faith to faith and grace to grace. 00:38:58.18\00:39:01.21 And now you may not be making the money you made before 00:39:01.24\00:39:03.72 but you're making friends on earth and in heaven. 00:39:03.75\00:39:06.35 And you can't count that in gold and silver. 00:39:06.38\00:39:07.75 And I've got to tell you that she donated to the establishment 00:39:07.78\00:39:12.27 of our surgery center for children, our new one. 00:39:12.30\00:39:14.64 Made a major donation and naming-- 00:39:14.67\00:39:17.12 and named it in honor of the-- of the director of surgery. 00:39:17.15\00:39:21.00 And tell them what you put on the plaque. 00:39:21.03\00:39:23.10 "Let the little children come unto me." 00:39:23.13\00:39:25.13 "Let the little children come unto me" 00:39:25.16\00:39:27.00 and you've passed this on to your daughter. 00:39:27.03\00:39:28.66 So tell me about your daughter. 00:39:28.69\00:39:30.63 Well, she can tell you the story. 00:39:30.66\00:39:32.09 After her brother got hurt she was so impressed 00:39:32.12\00:39:34.24 with the care that he received at the hospital. 00:39:34.27\00:39:36.43 Go ahead, Lilly. 00:39:36.46\00:39:37.86 I had a seventeenth birthday, a year ago. 00:39:37.89\00:39:41.41 And I instead of asking for gifts, 00:39:41.44\00:39:44.06 I asked my friends to bring money 00:39:44.09\00:39:45.82 for the children's hospital. 00:39:45.85\00:39:47.64 And so over $600 was donated on your behalf. 00:39:47.67\00:39:50.43 This is gonna be a practice every year for her. 00:39:50.46\00:39:52.69 She is doing it again this year. 00:39:52.72\00:39:54.52 God bless you for investing your life, your treasure, 00:39:54.55\00:39:58.27 your talent and God's greatest gifts 00:39:58.30\00:40:00.85 that He has given you back into His kingdom. 00:40:00.88\00:40:03.22 Because I believe it will have eternal impact. 00:40:03.25\00:40:05.81 Because I believe Sabbath was a day God made for love. 00:40:05.84\00:40:09.64 In six days God created life. 00:40:09.67\00:40:11.67 On the seventh day God created love. 00:40:11.70\00:40:13.88 We are so thankful that that love 00:40:13.91\00:40:15.58 is expressed in your heart day by day. 00:40:15.61\00:40:17.84 And now we go to Jim 00:40:17.87\00:40:19.24 because he has one of the-- 00:40:19.27\00:40:21.95 the officers of Florida conference. 00:40:21.98\00:40:24.31 The president who has a vision for healthy 100 churches 00:40:24.34\00:40:27.58 because this story that you just heard 00:40:27.61\00:40:30.13 came from one of the healthy 100 churches in Florida. 00:40:30.16\00:40:33.10 Jim, take it. Yes. 00:40:33.13\00:40:34.56 Mike, and the environment is so important. 00:40:34.59\00:40:38.39 And in our churches here in Florida, 00:40:38.42\00:40:41.73 what is the goal of setting that type of environment? 00:40:41.76\00:40:45.86 Well, we began--as we began to interact with Florida hospital 00:40:45.89\00:40:49.09 over the last few years, Jim. 00:40:49.12\00:40:51.32 We have noticed that Florida hospital 00:40:51.35\00:40:54.13 is able to minister to the community, 00:40:54.16\00:40:57.56 remain authentic in their Christianity 00:40:57.59\00:41:00.38 and meet the needs of people in wonderful and compelling ways. 00:41:00.41\00:41:04.07 So we began to ask ourselves, 00:41:04.10\00:41:05.59 how can we transfer this same focus into our churches? 00:41:05.62\00:41:11.28 And we began to talk and pray and think about 00:41:11.31\00:41:14.52 inviting churches to become healthy 100 churches. 00:41:14.55\00:41:17.38 So today churches are conducting creation health seminars 00:41:17.41\00:41:22.05 in order to help their communities 00:41:22.08\00:41:24.13 come to know the abundant life, 00:41:24.16\00:41:26.61 a life that's full and whole that Jesus wants to bring to us. 00:41:26.64\00:41:30.36 Are you encouraging churches throughout the state to do this 00:41:30.39\00:41:33.83 or only just in the--in the greater Orlando and Tampa area? 00:41:33.86\00:41:37.92 We have churches mainly where we have Adventist hospitals 00:41:37.95\00:41:41.14 from just north of Daytona down to Tampa along the I-4 corridor 00:41:41.17\00:41:46.46 but there are churches all across the state now 00:41:46.49\00:41:48.86 who are beginning to say 00:41:48.89\00:41:50.26 we want to be a part of the creation health emphasis. 00:41:50.29\00:41:52.78 We want to do something that will make a difference 00:41:52.81\00:41:55.33 in the lives of the people in our community. 00:41:55.36\00:41:57.34 And your churches are interested 00:41:57.37\00:41:59.06 not only in the spiritual life of the individual 00:41:59.09\00:42:02.33 but the physical life as well 00:42:02.36\00:42:04.30 so they can have a happier, healthier life. 00:42:04.33\00:42:06.79 You can be much more spiritual 00:42:06.82\00:42:08.36 when you're having good health. 00:42:08.39\00:42:10.39 We have so many stories of how God is blessing. 00:42:10.42\00:42:13.69 A pastor down in Hollywood, 00:42:13.72\00:42:15.65 Nelson de Oliveira has been diagnosed with M.S. 00:42:15.68\00:42:19.67 He joined an M.S. support group. 00:42:19.70\00:42:21.20 He began to teach healthy 100 recreation health concepts 00:42:21.23\00:42:25.11 to the people in his community 00:42:25.14\00:42:27.26 and in his church and of all the people in his support group 00:42:27.29\00:42:31.32 he is the only one who is not in a wheelchair today. 00:42:31.35\00:42:34.61 He attributes that to teaching creation health principles. 00:42:34.64\00:42:38.18 Wow, that's tremendous. 00:42:38.21\00:42:39.58 And, Des, I know that we have been seeing 00:42:39.61\00:42:42.11 some tremendous things happen in Florida hospital. 00:42:42.14\00:42:45.13 Especially, as you work together with the churches, 00:42:45.16\00:42:48.03 tell us about the new tower at Florida hospital, would you? 00:42:48.06\00:42:51.31 I'd love to tell you about the new tower 00:42:51.34\00:42:52.97 because what we believe our hospital facilities 00:42:53.00\00:42:55.61 are to be is an environment 00:42:55.64\00:42:57.69 where we have a sanctuary of healing. 00:42:57.72\00:43:00.57 And that brings us to the next principle in creation health, 00:43:00.60\00:43:04.12 a sanctuary of healing. 00:43:04.15\00:43:05.52 And if you look at this building you see a spire on it 00:43:05.55\00:43:08.40 because you believe that every community 00:43:08.43\00:43:11.46 that has a hospital should treat it as a cathedral of care. 00:43:11.49\00:43:16.05 And in that is a spire that faces up to God. 00:43:16.08\00:43:19.23 And you'll notice that spire is open with the face towards God 00:43:19.26\00:43:22.35 because it's a--in within that spire we have conference room. 00:43:22.38\00:43:25.88 It's where all of the care planning goes on 00:43:25.91\00:43:28.59 but, first of all, we teach people 00:43:28.62\00:43:30.44 that we face God 00:43:30.47\00:43:31.84 for all good things come down from the Father of lights. 00:43:31.87\00:43:34.59 And we light that spire with His presence 00:43:34.62\00:43:37.06 and it ignites those rooms with the ideas of healing 00:43:37.09\00:43:40.41 the whole person that will cause people to experience 00:43:40.44\00:43:43.77 the eternal healing of mind, body and spirit. 00:43:43.80\00:43:46.65 And, Jim, we couldn't be more excited than to know 00:43:46.68\00:43:49.77 that the environment that we create 00:43:49.80\00:43:52.13 is to bring us back to God in the garden. 00:43:52.16\00:43:54.90 You see, He created an environment where-- 00:43:54.93\00:43:57.37 in which humans were to thrive. 00:43:57.40\00:43:58.79 It was a garden but the fact is we now live in a jungle 00:43:58.82\00:44:03.00 but the truth is every week on Sabbath the gardens open again. 00:44:03.03\00:44:07.92 We have the opportunity to come back. 00:44:07.95\00:44:09.56 And every day we can reshape our lives 00:44:09.59\00:44:12.88 and change the environment around that garden. 00:44:12.91\00:44:16.03 You know, when I was at the Florida hospital 00:44:16.06\00:44:18.08 not long ago you showed me a mural. 00:44:18.11\00:44:21.51 And would you tell us a little bit about that mural? 00:44:21.54\00:44:23.92 Absolutely, as you enter the building 00:44:23.95\00:44:26.57 the first thing we want to have is shape, 00:44:26.60\00:44:28.67 is the building speaks to you 00:44:28.70\00:44:30.16 from the exterior with the tower and with the spire. 00:44:30.19\00:44:33.26 And then as you enter the building 00:44:33.29\00:44:34.96 we have a three floor mural 00:44:34.99\00:44:36.86 that you see as you come down the escalators. 00:44:36.89\00:44:39.19 That's three stories high. 00:44:39.22\00:44:40.99 It is a picture that depicts all of the blessings of creation 00:44:41.02\00:44:44.58 and all the hopes of heaven. 00:44:44.61\00:44:46.07 So you find all those mixed in this one picture. 00:44:46.10\00:44:48.80 It's called creation and recreation. 00:44:48.83\00:44:51.28 And we believe that this inspires people 00:44:51.31\00:44:53.34 to tell them what we're about. 00:44:53.37\00:44:54.84 And it creates an environment 00:44:54.87\00:44:56.38 that is not completely toxic with all the things 00:44:56.41\00:45:00.32 that you would expect in just a sterile environment. 00:45:00.35\00:45:03.67 But it is a place that inspires the soul. 00:45:03.70\00:45:06.98 Well, you know there are lots of things that inspire us 00:45:07.01\00:45:09.06 but I think nature is one of those great things. 00:45:09.09\00:45:12.01 And working together with some of the natural health laws 00:45:12.04\00:45:15.46 that you are working with-- 00:45:15.49\00:45:17.41 recently I heard about a video that you have. 00:45:17.44\00:45:21.32 Absolutely. In this video you're going to hear a story. 00:45:21.35\00:45:25.07 A people who never knew as to what it was 00:45:25.10\00:45:27.89 to have a Christian hospital. 00:45:27.92\00:45:29.71 A people who came and were so influenced 00:45:29.74\00:45:32.48 by the power of the environment 00:45:32.51\00:45:34.49 that it changed their lives and changed their future. 00:45:34.52\00:45:37.59 It's a story about a young girl. Watch. 00:45:37.62\00:45:40.65 Most children have dreams. 00:45:50.18\00:45:52.44 Laura's was to swim with the dolphins and she did. 00:45:52.47\00:45:56.86 This is a story about a brave little girl, 00:45:56.89\00:45:59.50 her beautiful big heart. 00:45:59.53\00:46:01.33 And the impact her short life made on others. 00:46:01.36\00:46:05.17 It's a story of joy and hope and love. 00:46:05.20\00:46:09.05 My daughter Laura was diagnosed 00:46:11.41\00:46:13.16 on the day before her tenth birthday with a brain tumor. 00:46:13.19\00:46:17.24 And we were then told that we-- we couldn't do anything. 00:46:17.27\00:46:21.81 Laura was a full of life girl. She'd long, blonde hair. 00:46:21.84\00:46:27.65 She was tenacious beautiful, had a beautiful personality. 00:46:27.68\00:46:32.73 She was a really kind hearted girl. 00:46:32.76\00:46:36.02 And then she-- I was so proud of her. 00:46:36.05\00:46:40.01 When Laura was first diagnosed 00:46:40.04\00:46:42.15 we asked her what she wanted to do. 00:46:42.18\00:46:43.96 And her dream was to swim with the dolphins 00:46:43.99\00:46:46.25 and go to the Disney parks in America. 00:46:46.28\00:46:48.61 So we booked up and we came, 00:46:48.64\00:46:50.39 and we went to Discovery Coach, and swim with the dolphins. 00:46:50.42\00:46:53.79 That smile on her face 00:46:53.82\00:46:55.33 when she kissed that dolphin for the first time. 00:46:55.36\00:46:59.83 It was worth every penny. 00:46:59.86\00:47:01.79 And, you know, seeing her around the parks was--she was happy. 00:47:01.82\00:47:06.89 She was so happy. 00:47:06.92\00:47:08.29 We did all the rides. We went to all the parks. 00:47:08.32\00:47:11.50 And we just had an absolutely fantastic nearly two weeks. 00:47:11.53\00:47:14.18 And we just felt that God had given her the holiday. 00:47:14.21\00:47:18.87 He'd given her the strength. He'd given her everything. 00:47:18.90\00:47:22.00 And then towards the end of the holiday 00:47:22.03\00:47:23.62 that's when she started to go downhill. 00:47:23.65\00:47:25.86 She'd come in with some numbness in her legs 00:47:25.89\00:47:27.90 which she had had previously before she came in 00:47:27.93\00:47:32.83 and then I think the plane ride just made it a little worse. 00:47:32.86\00:47:36.59 And--so she came in and was just, 00:47:36.62\00:47:39.44 kind of, complaining of a headache, 00:47:39.47\00:47:40.84 just general weakness, not feeling great. 00:47:40.87\00:47:43.94 We were very worried 00:47:43.97\00:47:45.53 about coming to hospital in a strange country. 00:47:45.56\00:47:48.22 But when we actually walked through the doors 00:47:48.25\00:47:50.92 everybody was really helpful and friendly. 00:47:50.95\00:47:53.13 We just noticed the love, you know. 00:47:53.16\00:47:54.68 You just--we didn't realize Christian hospitals existed. 00:47:54.71\00:47:57.86 But she was still a normal teenage girl 00:47:57.89\00:48:01.03 and happy and watching T.V., hanging out with her brother, 00:48:01.06\00:48:06.91 hanging out--you know, very interactive with the nurses. 00:48:06.94\00:48:09.96 She really thought that she was getting better-- 00:48:09.99\00:48:13.25 you know, and that we'd be ought to go back to the parks 00:48:13.28\00:48:15.29 for the next couple of days and fly home on a Monday. 00:48:15.32\00:48:18.18 And all of a sudden she's got a dreadful pain in her head. 00:48:18.21\00:48:21.37 And the doctors came around. 00:48:21.40\00:48:24.35 They took her down for scan. 00:48:24.38\00:48:26.60 And when she was down having scan I went in with her. 00:48:26.63\00:48:29.73 And her lungs collapsed and all of a sudden 00:48:29.76\00:48:33.98 there was a crowd of nurses and doctors all around. 00:48:34.01\00:48:36.63 And, um, the next minute she is on life support. 00:48:36.66\00:48:42.22 And it went on from there. 00:48:42.25\00:48:43.81 I don't know whether it was a doctor or nurse 00:48:43.84\00:48:45.90 but he got down on his knees and he started praying. 00:48:45.93\00:48:48.85 And we were praying for her. 00:48:48.88\00:48:51.34 Just going, "Oh, Lord, just heal her" you know, "just heal her." 00:48:51.37\00:48:54.92 Over that period of time, 00:48:54.95\00:48:56.67 we'd had, I think, three pastors-- three or four pastors 00:48:56.70\00:49:00.67 coming to pray with us for Laura's--for Laura. 00:49:00.70\00:49:05.31 We had respiratory staff, 00:49:05.34\00:49:06.84 respiratory nurses praying on their knees 00:49:06.87\00:49:09.18 while they are treating her. 00:49:09.21\00:49:11.10 We have transportation staff praying over Laura 00:49:11.13\00:49:14.79 and talking to my family in the cafeteria. 00:49:14.82\00:49:19.06 And giving some encouragement. 00:49:19.09\00:49:20.63 My husband prayed, "don't make her suffer," you know? 00:49:20.66\00:49:23.34 "If you want to take her, just take her quickly." 00:49:23.37\00:49:25.65 My husband had actually asked for a sign 00:49:25.68\00:49:27.49 about what was going to happen. 00:49:27.52\00:49:29.37 And just as he asked that over the tunnel we came, 00:49:29.40\00:49:32.70 Poem lullaby, go to sleep, go to sleep, and we know, 00:49:32.73\00:49:36.92 we had to let her go. 00:49:36.95\00:49:38.47 The--the feeling of love that we got here with children, 00:49:40.01\00:49:43.52 the Florida children's hospital, their unconditional love. 00:49:43.55\00:49:45.84 It was love shown to us 00:49:45.87\00:49:47.40 that we didn't expect from people we didn't know. 00:49:47.43\00:49:52.24 And for us, we'd never expected anything like that. 00:49:52.27\00:49:55.33 We feel being thousands of miles away from home 00:49:55.36\00:49:58.67 that we would feel totally isolated being here, 00:49:58.70\00:50:00.98 with what was happening. But we didn't. 00:50:01.01\00:50:03.74 When we got home and we shut the door 00:50:03.77\00:50:06.54 that's when we felt isolated. 00:50:06.57\00:50:08.64 The Aslett family was invited 00:50:18.92\00:50:22.01 to participate in our 2004 memorial service 00:50:22.04\00:50:26.85 for those children who had died at Florida hospital. 00:50:26.88\00:50:30.42 Our expectation was that their participation would be 00:50:30.45\00:50:35.17 to send a picture of their daughter. 00:50:35.20\00:50:37.39 The invitation arrived. 00:50:37.42\00:50:38.79 It was such a lovely invitation with the yellow ribbon. 00:50:38.82\00:50:41.63 And I just knew I had to-- 00:50:41.66\00:50:45.28 we had to come back because they are family. 00:50:45.31\00:50:47.64 Because we had such a positive experience 00:50:47.67\00:50:50.85 when we were at the hospital 00:50:50.88\00:50:52.25 even though our daughter died which was very tragic and sad. 00:50:52.28\00:50:55.63 We thought the care that we received 00:50:55.66\00:50:57.55 was just absolutely wonderful. 00:50:57.58\00:51:00.72 The purpose of the memorial service is to bring together 00:51:00.75\00:51:05.03 the families of the children who have died, 00:51:05.06\00:51:09.36 to bring them together not only with each other 00:51:09.39\00:51:12.24 for whatever healing environment that may provide. 00:51:12.27\00:51:16.50 We're just so glad we came to the memorial service 00:51:16.53\00:51:21.54 because we wanted to try to see some of the people 00:51:21.57\00:51:23.95 that helped us and to thank them. 00:51:23.98\00:51:26.03 The service was lovely, the harp playing. The solo singers. 00:51:26.06\00:51:32.69 We just felt, as we walked into the church, 00:51:32.72\00:51:35.01 we just felt God's presence in that church. 00:51:35.04\00:51:38.12 It was a really lovely feeling. 00:51:38.15\00:51:40.13 You know God was in it. 00:51:40.16\00:51:41.53 From the moment Laura was diagnosed until the day she died 00:51:48.79\00:51:51.90 the hand of God was protecting us. 00:51:51.93\00:51:55.24 Nobody ever wants to lose their child. 00:51:55.27\00:51:57.76 You always want the healing to be, a medical healing. 00:51:57.79\00:52:01.50 But sometime it just can't be. 00:52:01.53\00:52:03.72 But the way it happened here, she didn't suffer. 00:52:03.75\00:52:07.05 She did what she wanted to do and she died happy. 00:52:07.08\00:52:12.03 We know we're gonna see her again but we're parents. 00:52:12.06\00:52:14.70 We had less than 12 years with our daughter. 00:52:14.73\00:52:17.60 And at times it's hard 00:52:17.63\00:52:19.30 but we have only lost her for this life. 00:52:19.33\00:52:20.91 And this is a short part of our life. 00:52:20.94\00:52:23.19 The time on earth is the shortest part. 00:52:23.22\00:52:25.77 We have eternal life again 00:52:25.80\00:52:27.40 and we'll have that with our daughter. 00:52:27.43\00:52:29.12 The timeless theme 00:53:00.64\00:53:03.87 Earth and heaven will pass away 00:53:03.90\00:53:10.81 It's not a dream 00:53:10.84\00:53:13.28 God will make all things new that day 00:53:13.31\00:53:21.28 Gone is the curse 00:53:21.31\00:53:25.27 From which I stumbled and fell 00:53:25.30\00:53:31.30 Evil is banished 00:53:31.33\00:53:35.66 To eternal hell 00:53:35.69\00:53:40.84 No more night 00:53:40.87\00:53:45.90 No more pain 00:53:45.93\00:53:50.59 No more tears 00:53:50.62\00:53:55.44 Never crying again 00:53:55.47\00:54:00.38 Praises to the great I Am 00:54:00.41\00:54:08.38 We will walk in the light 00:54:09.86\00:54:14.69 Of the risen Lamb. 00:54:14.72\00:54:20.87 Look over there 00:54:20.90\00:54:23.99 It's a mansion prepared for me 00:54:24.02\00:54:31.02 Where I can live with my Savior 00:54:31.05\00:54:36.49 Eternally 00:54:36.52\00:54:43.94 No more night 00:54:43.97\00:54:48.88 No more pain 00:54:48.91\00:54:54.46 No more tears 00:54:54.49\00:54:58.54 Never crying again 00:54:58.57\00:55:03.73 Praises to the great I Am 00:55:03.76\00:55:11.73 We will live in the light 00:55:12.98\00:55:17.78 Of the risen Lamb 00:55:17.81\00:55:22.25 We will live in the light 00:55:22.28\00:55:27.69 Of the risen Lamb 00:55:27.72\00:55:35.69 Amen.
