Hello, and welcome to 3ABN Night Light. 00:00:20.38\00:00:22.75 I'm C. A. Murray. My partner, Jim Gilley, is with me. 00:00:22.78\00:00:25.79 And this is a very, very special Night Light program Jim. 00:00:25.82\00:00:29.39 It really is. And each time we try to, we try to address 00:00:29.42\00:00:35.80 current situations, and needs that we feel like are very 00:00:35.83\00:00:40.77 important for God's church, for education, for those things that 00:00:40.80\00:00:46.81 we are facing as Christians. 00:00:46.84\00:00:48.78 And right now tonight, we're going to be talking about a very 00:00:48.81\00:00:52.88 touchy subject with some people. 00:00:52.91\00:00:54.65 But it's something I feel like we have to talk about. 00:00:54.68\00:00:57.99 You know, the Bible tells us, and we will mention this 00:00:58.02\00:01:00.56 a little bit later on the program, that we need to be 00:01:00.59\00:01:02.52 as wise as serpents, harmless as doves. 00:01:02.56\00:01:05.29 And I'm looking at, I've got, Jim, you can see a little map 00:01:05.33\00:01:07.50 here of the United States. 00:01:07.53\00:01:08.86 And I'm looking at the plethora... 00:01:08.90\00:01:12.07 Let me use that big $5.00 word of mass shootings since 1982. 00:01:12.10\00:01:16.94 Yeah. Uh, safety really is an illusion. 00:01:16.97\00:01:20.51 You know, you're really only safe in Jesus. 00:01:20.54\00:01:22.14 You can be behind locked doors, you can go through metal 00:01:22.18\00:01:24.91 detectors, whatever, but the guns are proliferating, 00:01:24.95\00:01:30.59 mass murder is proliferating. 00:01:30.62\00:01:33.99 You know, when we were young, you had a beef with a guy, 00:01:34.02\00:01:37.23 you know, you throw out your school books, and you kind a 00:01:37.26\00:01:39.63 duke it out a little bit. 00:01:39.66\00:01:41.00 That's right. 00:01:41.03\00:01:42.36 But people are now going and getting guns. 00:01:42.40\00:01:43.73 And guns that shoot a lot of bullets really fast, 00:01:43.77\00:01:46.80 and hurting a lot of innocent people. 00:01:46.84\00:01:48.97 And they're settling their disputes with guns, 00:01:49.00\00:01:52.21 not their fists. Not that fists were right, but at least you 00:01:52.24\00:01:54.94 could walk away from the fist fight. 00:01:54.98\00:01:56.34 And, you know, even, to me, something that I worry about 00:01:56.38\00:02:00.92 even more for some people is the fact that there are deranged 00:02:00.95\00:02:04.79 individuals who somehow feel that going into a school, 00:02:04.82\00:02:10.09 or into a church, into a theatre, into a place where 00:02:10.13\00:02:14.86 there are people, and shooting a lot of people, somehow they 00:02:14.90\00:02:20.50 imagine that this is a great heroic deed or something. 00:02:20.54\00:02:25.81 Because we don't know how those minds work. 00:02:25.84\00:02:28.61 I have no idea how they think. 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.68 Sometimes we get the idea that because of video games 00:02:30.71\00:02:34.32 this has increased. 00:02:34.35\00:02:36.18 And that very well could be. 00:02:36.22\00:02:38.65 When we had the situation that took place at Sandy Hook, 00:02:38.69\00:02:42.39 in Newtown, Connecticut, at that time I once again began to 00:02:42.42\00:02:48.46 realize that we had to do a special program on 3ABN talking 00:02:48.50\00:02:55.27 and addressing some of these situations that 00:02:55.30\00:02:58.57 we're facing today. 00:02:58.61\00:02:59.94 And that's, to me that's sort of the basis of what happened. 00:02:59.97\00:03:04.31 Yeah, you know, Jim, here in Illinois, our state is one of 00:03:04.35\00:03:07.15 the last states to pass concealed carry legislation. 00:03:07.18\00:03:10.25 Yes. Where you can just put a gun in your pocket 00:03:10.29\00:03:12.49 and you can carry it. 00:03:12.52\00:03:13.86 The Governor tried to have some special laws added to that one. 00:03:13.89\00:03:20.16 You couldn't bring one to church. 00:03:20.20\00:03:21.53 There were some other things. 00:03:21.56\00:03:23.06 You couldn't have a gun in a place that sold liquor. 00:03:23.10\00:03:25.10 But those laws were defeated. 00:03:25.13\00:03:27.90 And, of course, now we have concealed carry here. 00:03:27.94\00:03:31.07 The fact is that guns are proliferating. 00:03:31.11\00:03:34.54 Even in church people are carrying guns. 00:03:34.58\00:03:38.15 And that has always been, but people are now 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.32 using guns in church. 00:03:40.35\00:03:41.68 And so we need to talk about that. 00:03:41.72\00:03:43.75 We need to kind of address those kinds of things, 00:03:43.79\00:03:45.65 because we need to keep our people safe. 00:03:45.69\00:03:47.56 We really do. We know of a situation that took place 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.19 some time ago here in Illinois, where there was a man who was 00:03:51.23\00:03:56.53 very upset, estranged from his wife. 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.53 He came into the church to shoot her; shot some other innocent 00:03:59.57\00:04:04.64 people; shot the pastor. 00:04:04.67\00:04:07.61 And this makes us realize that when you go to church this is a 00:04:07.64\00:04:14.95 very real possibility today. 00:04:14.98\00:04:18.19 Now some people have gotten the idea that if they have enough 00:04:18.22\00:04:21.92 deacons and elders that are armed, that this will protect 00:04:21.96\00:04:26.19 them, but folks, we found that that may not be the answer. 00:04:26.23\00:04:29.60 In fact we don't recommend that. 00:04:29.63\00:04:31.63 We want you to know that we don't. 00:04:31.67\00:04:33.94 And we're going to be talking in a few minutes 00:04:33.97\00:04:36.74 to some professionals. Yes. 00:04:36.77\00:04:38.27 And I will, I would just be very, very sure that they are 00:04:38.31\00:04:44.21 going to recommend that only professional officers carry 00:04:44.25\00:04:48.48 guns to protect people. 00:04:48.52\00:04:49.98 Yeah. When you've got deacons with guns, elders with guns, 00:04:50.02\00:04:52.15 guns playing church, you don't want a lot of people spraying 00:04:52.19\00:04:54.42 a lot of bullets around even in a church situation. 00:04:54.46\00:04:58.03 So you wonder why are they talking about guns and violence, 00:04:58.06\00:05:01.43 because guns and violence have lift their way into the church, 00:05:01.46\00:05:05.57 and we need to be aware. 00:05:05.60\00:05:06.94 And so we have brought a couple of experts here. 00:05:06.97\00:05:09.70 They are both Adventists, they are both in the security. 00:05:09.74\00:05:13.07 One is in law enforcement enforcement. 00:05:13.11\00:05:14.54 We're going to introduce him in just a little bit. 00:05:14.58\00:05:16.14 But we need you to understand that these are serious times, 00:05:16.18\00:05:19.35 and God's people need to be wise. 00:05:19.38\00:05:21.25 Our schools are open many times. 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.69 We don't have metal detectors at our schools. 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.45 I've been the chairman of the board of a couple of academies. 00:05:25.49\00:05:27.36 You've dealt with schools all of your life; 00:05:27.39\00:05:29.42 put kids through school. 00:05:29.46\00:05:30.79 We don't have metal detectors at our schools. 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.26 But we need to be wise, and we need to be safe in these times. 00:05:32.29\00:05:35.63 Well, we have a responsibility. 00:05:35.66\00:05:37.27 I've been the chairman of the board of a number of academies, 00:05:37.30\00:05:39.93 and schools, and we have a responsibility, folks, 00:05:39.97\00:05:45.34 to protect those that are there. 00:05:45.37\00:05:48.18 I do know that some of you live in places where you don't even 00:05:48.21\00:05:52.18 have to worry about locking your doors in your house. 00:05:52.21\00:05:55.18 You don't have to worry about locking your car. 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.95 But I will tell you this, that that is not true 00:05:57.99\00:06:03.32 all over this country. 00:06:03.36\00:06:04.69 In fact I think you've probably had some experiences with this, 00:06:04.73\00:06:10.00 so we may be talking about some of those a little later on. 00:06:10.03\00:06:12.33 Yeah, I've had three cars taken. 00:06:12.37\00:06:13.70 Right, and I will share some things that have happened 00:06:13.74\00:06:18.97 when I was just going to church, or being the pastor of a church, 00:06:19.01\00:06:23.95 where we had break-ins, where people broke into cars, 00:06:23.98\00:06:29.12 broke into our church, sole the sound system, 00:06:29.15\00:06:31.75 things of that nature. 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.52 These are very real problems today. 00:06:33.56\00:06:36.73 Now we are preparing this program so that it is available. 00:06:36.76\00:06:41.10 It's going to be available. 00:06:41.13\00:06:42.50 I may mention this again later, but it's going to be available 00:06:42.53\00:06:45.33 to schools, and churches, and organizations of any 00:06:45.37\00:06:50.17 denomination, anywhere in this country as a gift from 3ABN. 00:06:50.21\00:06:54.74 You only have to contact us, ask for it, and we will send you 00:06:54.78\00:06:59.81 a copy of this program. 00:06:59.85\00:07:01.18 We also want to try to do the very best to help you have good 00:07:01.22\00:07:05.52 security in your church. 00:07:05.55\00:07:07.92 Not the type of thing, folks, where people are all armed, 00:07:07.96\00:07:12.56 and where you don't feel comfortable in worship. 00:07:12.59\00:07:15.53 That's not the goal. Yeah. 00:07:15.56\00:07:17.17 But the goal is to take precautions so that we are not 00:07:17.20\00:07:23.00 left without any kind of protection in this 00:07:23.04\00:07:27.78 type of a situation. 00:07:27.81\00:07:29.14 And here's another area that we're going to talk about 00:07:29.18\00:07:30.51 in the upcoming video. 00:07:30.55\00:07:32.21 Ah roll in in just a little bit. 00:07:32.25\00:07:34.78 Churches are, excuse me, kind of an easy mark because you're 00:07:34.82\00:07:39.32 handling large amounts of money, particularly on Sabbath morning. 00:07:39.35\00:07:42.49 Yeah. My last church, we were 18 to 20 thousand 00:07:42.52\00:07:45.79 in offerings every Saturday. 00:07:45.83\00:07:47.50 So you need to be aware by getting that money out of the 00:07:47.53\00:07:53.47 church, out of the sanctuary, out of the prying eyes of people 00:07:53.50\00:07:56.14 as quickly as possible, and being very efficient 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.44 in your offering collection. 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.81 Because usually people who pull these kind of capers 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.74 kind of watch how things go a couple of weeks. 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.25 You may have people who you think are visitors. 00:08:05.28\00:08:06.92 They may be looking to see how you handle your money, 00:08:06.95\00:08:09.88 how tightly, or how loosely you handle your money, 00:08:09.92\00:08:11.95 and try to find ways to intercept your money. 00:08:11.99\00:08:15.42 So we're going to talk about some of those things 00:08:15.46\00:08:16.79 in the videos that are coming up. 00:08:16.83\00:08:18.16 Jim if you want to introduce those guys that we're going 00:08:18.19\00:08:19.93 to be interviewing in just a little bit. 00:08:19.96\00:08:21.50 Well, I will, but, you know, one of the things we're going to 00:08:21.53\00:08:24.63 show is a video. Oh yes. 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.53 This video is, it's dramatic. 00:08:26.57\00:08:30.57 It is a, it was put together by Homeland Security 00:08:30.61\00:08:35.21 and I believe the Houston Police Department. 00:08:35.24\00:08:37.25 And they have put this together to show what happens, 00:08:37.28\00:08:41.38 or what your reaction should be if there is an active shooter 00:08:41.42\00:08:48.36 that comes into your place of work, comes into your school, 00:08:48.39\00:08:53.19 comes into your church, or wherever. 00:08:53.23\00:08:56.00 Very important to have a plan, to know, What am I going to do 00:08:56.03\00:09:01.67 if somebody comes in. 00:09:01.70\00:09:03.17 And so this is very important. 00:09:03.20\00:09:06.31 Some of you may not be able to take this video. 00:09:06.34\00:09:09.61 And if it happens, when the time comes, in fact some of you 00:09:09.64\00:09:13.92 may not be able to take this entire program. 00:09:13.95\00:09:16.18 And if that's true I suggest you take your Bible and go study 00:09:16.22\00:09:20.46 your Sabbath School lesson, or do something during this time. 00:09:20.49\00:09:24.56 However, I want, and I'm praying that this program 00:09:24.59\00:09:28.96 will save at least one life. Yes. 00:09:29.00\00:09:31.93 That someday, somewhere, somebody will say to us, 00:09:31.97\00:09:35.60 Because you fellows did that program, my life was saved. 00:09:35.64\00:09:40.18 Yeah. We will give you some tools during this particular 00:09:40.21\00:09:44.65 video that really will teach you what to do in a case of 00:09:44.68\00:09:48.88 an emergency; like the old videos when they set up to the 00:09:48.92\00:09:51.55 fire, stop, drop, and roll kind of thing. 00:09:51.59\00:09:53.69 Well, we want to put some tools in your hand, 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.09 because you're not thinking; you're reacting. 00:09:56.12\00:09:58.06 So we want you to react correctly because your life 00:09:58.09\00:10:01.26 may depend on how you react when somebody comes in. 00:10:01.30\00:10:03.57 And you think, you know, people think, 00:10:03.60\00:10:04.93 It's never going to happen to me. 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.30 And it does happen to people. 00:10:06.33\00:10:07.70 We're looking at hundreds of incidences of people who 00:10:07.74\00:10:10.77 probably never thought that they'd be facing something like 00:10:10.81\00:10:13.17 this, but they are. 00:10:13.21\00:10:14.54 So we want you to be prepared, and ready to do the right thing 00:10:14.58\00:10:17.41 at the right time to save your life or someone else's. 00:10:17.45\00:10:20.12 And we are praying that it never happens to you. 00:10:20.15\00:10:22.65 We're praying that this is very unnecessary information. 00:10:22.68\00:10:26.12 But you know if you take a precaution, and you are careful, 00:10:26.15\00:10:29.79 and you are prepared, then usually 00:10:29.82\00:10:35.26 you don't have to use it. 00:10:35.30\00:10:37.50 But if you have to use it it's available to you. 00:10:37.53\00:10:41.14 Well, the gentlemen that we are going to be visiting with, 00:10:41.17\00:10:43.91 Enoch Herd is the head of the Collegedale Police Department, 00:10:43.94\00:10:50.01 and the director of campus safety for Southern Adventist 00:10:50.05\00:10:57.52 University is Kevin Penrod. 00:10:57.55\00:11:00.36 These gentlemen have been a great help to us here at 3ABN. 00:11:00.39\00:11:04.83 They've come here, they've looked at our entire situation, 00:11:04.86\00:11:09.66 gave us safety counsel on preventing fires, 00:11:09.70\00:11:14.80 preventing injury in case there was, roots of escape, 00:11:14.84\00:11:20.24 things of that nature. 00:11:20.28\00:11:21.81 We really have appreciated their technical ability. 00:11:21.84\00:11:26.92 And these are men that love the Lord. 00:11:26.95\00:11:30.55 They are born again Christians. 00:11:30.59\00:11:32.45 Seventh-day Adventists, both of them. That's right. 00:11:32.49\00:11:35.09 And um, I'm sorry Jim. 00:11:35.12\00:11:36.49 No they, Go ahead. 00:11:36.52\00:11:37.89 Ha! We shot this over on our Today show set, 00:11:37.93\00:11:41.56 so we're going to be going over there in just a little bit 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.43 just for space and time constraints. 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.03 But we really want you to pull out pen, paper; listen to these 00:11:46.07\00:11:49.44 things, because we're going to talk about a number of things, 00:11:49.47\00:11:51.11 including fire safety and mental health. 00:11:51.14\00:11:52.91 All of this is in this package. 00:11:52.94\00:11:54.61 Yes, and so right now get a pen and paper, and we will see you. 00:11:54.64\00:12:00.18 We're going to the other set. 00:12:00.22\00:12:01.55 Our guests are Kevin Penrod, Enoch Hurd. 00:12:04.69\00:12:07.56 He's the director of safety for Southern Adventist University. 00:12:07.59\00:12:12.39 Big school, a school that we love and know quite well. 00:12:12.43\00:12:15.76 And then we move to the Collegedale Police 00:12:15.80\00:12:18.17 Department, Enoch Hurd. 00:12:18.20\00:12:19.63 Gentlemen, good to have you here. 00:12:19.67\00:12:21.47 Thanks for having us. 00:12:21.50\00:12:22.84 Kevin kind of looks like a banker, lawyer, you know, 00:12:22.87\00:12:25.84 that kind of thing, but he's a safety guy, 00:12:25.87\00:12:28.11 and we're going to talk about that. 00:12:28.14\00:12:29.48 On a college campus in particular you've got people 00:12:29.51\00:12:33.05 coming and going, and students moving, gong to and fro. 00:12:33.08\00:12:35.48 Safety is a big concern. 00:12:35.52\00:12:38.39 People send their children and put them in the hands of the 00:12:38.42\00:12:41.76 school, and expect those kids to be safe. 00:12:41.79\00:12:43.76 And we find, many times, that they are not. 00:12:43.79\00:12:45.39 So you've got big shoes to fill, and a big job. 00:12:45.43\00:12:48.93 Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. 00:12:48.96\00:12:50.67 And we began to really think about this program 00:12:50.70\00:12:53.90 several years ago, particularly when there was an incident at 00:12:53.94\00:12:57.67 a church here near St. Louis. Uh huh. 00:12:57.71\00:13:00.18 And Kevin came down here and helped us. 00:13:00.21\00:13:04.95 They were, he and Officer Hurd were here for a camp meeting 00:13:04.98\00:13:09.58 with some other individuals, and helped train our people for just 00:13:09.62\00:13:15.56 basic safety and security type situations. 00:13:15.59\00:13:19.13 But then after recently, in recent months, 00:13:19.16\00:13:24.60 we had the incident that took place in Connecticut. 00:13:24.63\00:13:28.50 I once again contacted you and said, We've got to do a program 00:13:28.54\00:13:33.54 on safety for our churches, and for our 00:13:33.58\00:13:38.38 schools, and on security. 00:13:38.41\00:13:41.48 I don't know if you ever had any incidents there, but one morning 00:13:41.52\00:13:46.39 I got a telephone call at our church that there was an 00:13:46.42\00:13:54.00 intruder in the church; that the janitor called and said, 00:13:54.03\00:13:58.40 Somebody's in this church other than me. 00:13:58.43\00:14:01.54 And so I immediately called our Associate Pastor, 00:14:01.57\00:14:07.34 James Buckmaster; who, James is a big old boy, and I said, 00:14:07.38\00:14:11.05 James, get over there and see what you can do. 00:14:11.08\00:14:13.82 I said, Probably by the time you get there they'll be gone. 00:14:13.85\00:14:17.65 That's not true. When James got there he thought they were gone. 00:14:17.69\00:14:21.02 He called the police. 00:14:21.06\00:14:22.39 The police drove up and the police said to James, 00:14:22.42\00:14:25.99 as he drove up he rolled his window down. 00:14:26.03\00:14:27.93 He said, Are you all unloading things out the back? 00:14:27.96\00:14:30.90 And James said, No! 00:14:30.93\00:14:33.10 Well, somebody was unloading our sound system; 00:14:33.13\00:14:36.10 close to $30,000.00 worth of sound system that they had 00:14:36.14\00:14:40.54 destroyed in the incident that was taking place. 00:14:40.58\00:14:45.41 They weren't careful in taking it out. 00:14:45.45\00:14:47.42 They didn't even unplug it. 00:14:47.45\00:14:48.78 They just cut the wires. 00:14:48.82\00:14:50.15 And so they did catch the man out in the back in the alley. 00:14:50.19\00:14:55.66 He was unloading all of our sound equipment at that time. 00:14:55.69\00:15:00.00 Broad open daylight; 8:00 o'clock in the morning, 00:15:00.03\00:15:03.30 and this is taking place at our church. 00:15:03.33\00:15:07.54 It made us realize how important it was to have security there. 00:15:07.57\00:15:11.64 And to have, to take measures with the alarm system. 00:15:11.67\00:15:16.11 We then made a... It was so hard to keep the church alarmed 00:15:16.14\00:15:21.22 that we finally ended up alarming the sound room, 00:15:21.25\00:15:24.42 because that's the room that had been hit so many times. 00:15:24.45\00:15:27.36 The church has a general alarm, but it's hardly ever set, 00:15:27.39\00:15:31.46 to be honest with you. 00:15:31.49\00:15:32.83 But we did arm that. 00:15:32.86\00:15:34.20 Now I know you've had incidents there, 00:15:34.23\00:15:36.26 and you took security precautions. 00:15:36.30\00:15:38.77 Oh yeah. We've had. 00:15:38.80\00:15:40.14 Every church that I've pastored we put in a full alarm system. 00:15:40.17\00:15:42.87 Not to take much time, but I remember that the pastor before 00:15:42.90\00:15:46.54 me at the Ephuses church was walking down the street one day, 00:15:46.57\00:15:49.21 and saw somebody walking down in one of his suits 00:15:49.24\00:15:51.58 that they had taken from the Pastor's office. 00:15:51.61\00:15:53.31 Ha ha! He said, I know that suit; that's my suit man! 00:15:53.35\00:15:56.18 Right! Well, I bought it off a guy over there, you know. 00:15:56.22\00:15:58.89 So, I mean, we don't want to be naive, because people tend 00:15:58.92\00:16:02.62 to prey on churches. 00:16:02.66\00:16:03.99 They go for electronics. 00:16:04.03\00:16:05.36 They go for a lot of the stuff that's in churches. 00:16:05.39\00:16:07.06 So when we talk about general safety, Gentlemen, 00:16:07.10\00:16:10.73 what are we envisioning? 00:16:10.77\00:16:12.30 How does a church begin to protect itself, or a school? 00:16:12.33\00:16:15.07 What are some of the basic steps? 00:16:15.10\00:16:16.64 This is kind of like safety 101. 00:16:16.67\00:16:18.47 Okay, well we would first start out; we tell people that 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.78 your safety is your own responsibility. 00:16:21.81\00:16:24.65 We can be here to handle certain issues, and to be able to be 00:16:24.68\00:16:28.15 grounds patrol and personnel safety, but you have to take 00:16:28.18\00:16:31.92 matters into your own hands at the very beginning. 00:16:31.95\00:16:34.19 And the easiest way to do that is to become aware of your 00:16:34.22\00:16:37.13 surroundings, and what's happening to you. 00:16:37.16\00:16:39.29 We have a tendency as humans, to go around in 00:16:39.33\00:16:42.10 an auto pilot state where we're functioning, and we're paying 00:16:42.13\00:16:47.20 attention, but yet we're not really zeroed in on what's 00:16:47.24\00:16:50.31 happening around us. 00:16:50.34\00:16:51.67 So the first step is to make people personally aware, 00:16:51.71\00:16:53.88 so when they wake up in the morning and they step outside 00:16:53.91\00:16:56.71 on the porch the first time take a look around. 00:16:56.75\00:16:58.95 Don't just go straight to the car. 00:16:58.98\00:17:00.88 Just take a look around. 00:17:00.92\00:17:02.28 And when they go to the shopping mall, to the grocery store, 00:17:02.32\00:17:05.89 or any of those types of things, it's the exact same situation. 00:17:05.92\00:17:08.92 Is just make sure that you're aware of your surroundings, 00:17:08.96\00:17:10.83 and make sure you look around. 00:17:10.86\00:17:12.23 Look people in the eye. 00:17:12.26\00:17:13.60 Predators don't like to be recognized, or to be able to be 00:17:13.63\00:17:16.43 identified at a later time, so making eye contact is another 00:17:16.46\00:17:19.80 good way of at least sending a message that you're paying 00:17:19.83\00:17:21.97 attention to your surroundings, and that you're capable 00:17:22.00\00:17:26.07 of identifying them. 00:17:26.11\00:17:27.58 So those are good areas to begin. 00:17:27.61\00:17:31.35 The other general safety is locking doors. 00:17:31.38\00:17:34.02 They're there for a reason, so lock the doors, 00:17:34.05\00:17:38.12 lock the windows on your cars. 00:17:38.15\00:17:40.02 Don't leave things in plain sight. 00:17:40.06\00:17:42.49 Put things in the trunk if you are going to be parked. 00:17:42.52\00:17:46.63 We've had other incidents at churches where people use 00:17:46.66\00:17:49.80 the service time to actually break into cars. Yes. 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.33 They'll use the spring loaded center punch, pop out the side 00:17:52.37\00:17:55.40 window, grab whatever they can get, and be gone. 00:17:55.44\00:17:58.01 So we do things during church services; 00:17:58.04\00:18:00.91 put patrols through there. 00:18:00.94\00:18:02.28 Evening meetings, such as when you folks have been on 00:18:02.31\00:18:05.41 the campus of Southern, we've done the exact same thing 00:18:05.45\00:18:07.82 just to keep that from happening. 00:18:07.85\00:18:09.68 Um huh. You know, I suppose most of us have either pastored 00:18:09.72\00:18:14.42 churches, or been... 00:18:14.49\00:18:15.82 I actually had a car parked at a church once, and they broke in 00:18:15.86\00:18:19.49 and stole my radio right during the eleven o'clock hour. 00:18:19.53\00:18:23.30 My radio was taken out of my car. 00:18:23.33\00:18:26.57 Can you beat that? 00:18:26.60\00:18:27.94 The pastor, they stole his whole dashboard. 00:18:27.97\00:18:29.40 He went to put his key in; hand right through the firewall. 00:18:29.44\00:18:32.87 While during church service, entire dashboard; took it out. 00:18:32.91\00:18:36.01 You know, you also had an incident at a Conference office, 00:18:36.04\00:18:39.41 wasn't it? Yeah, they stole my... 00:18:39.45\00:18:41.78 Well, I've had three cars stolen. 00:18:41.82\00:18:43.69 And this was off the parking lot of the Conference office. 00:18:43.72\00:18:47.22 Twenty seconds. Twenty seconds; wow! 00:18:47.26\00:18:49.86 So we're living in a real world where these 00:18:49.89\00:18:53.13 kind of things happen. 00:18:53.16\00:18:54.50 Can't prevent all of them, but we can take precautions, 00:18:54.53\00:18:57.90 and be alert, and some of these things. 00:18:57.93\00:19:01.90 Kevin, just real quick, you say look around. 00:19:01.94\00:19:03.44 What am I looking for? 00:19:03.47\00:19:04.81 Strange people? Things out of the ordinary? 00:19:04.84\00:19:07.04 When I come out in the morning, I'm scanning. 00:19:07.08\00:19:08.91 What am I trying to perceive or pick up? 00:19:08.94\00:19:10.71 You hit the nail on the head. 00:19:10.75\00:19:12.08 That's exactly what you're looking for: something that 00:19:12.11\00:19:13.82 doesn't normally, isn't normally there. 00:19:13.85\00:19:15.95 Something that seems out of place. 00:19:15.98\00:19:17.52 It just helps you bring in the entire scope of what is around 00:19:17.55\00:19:21.89 your home, and around your vehicle. 00:19:21.92\00:19:23.76 The other thing, it gives you an opportunity to look at your 00:19:23.79\00:19:25.63 vehicle if it's parked outside, if there's glass, 00:19:25.66\00:19:27.63 if there's a flat tire, something on that line that 00:19:27.66\00:19:30.57 would be a possible indicator that somebody was still around, 00:19:30.60\00:19:33.74 or that something had been done. 00:19:33.77\00:19:35.74 And that's why it's so important to partner with the local law 00:19:35.77\00:19:38.87 enforcement so that, like our churches, and our schools, 00:19:38.91\00:19:42.78 it's imperative that we do partner with our local law 00:19:42.81\00:19:45.78 enforcement personnel, so they can come in and give a 00:19:45.81\00:19:47.55 perspective from what their job, and how they're going to handle 00:19:47.58\00:19:50.52 things if we do have an incident in, and or around our home. 00:19:50.55\00:19:53.09 Uh huh, uh huh. Does lighting around the house at night 00:19:53.12\00:19:57.06 deter? Does that really help? 00:19:57.09\00:19:58.79 The money you put into, to put in spotlights or flood lights; 00:19:58.83\00:20:02.16 is that money well spent? 00:20:02.20\00:20:04.20 It depends on what expert you speak to. 00:20:04.23\00:20:05.83 Some say, Absolutely, because crooks like the dark. 00:20:05.87\00:20:08.17 Others say, Well, it's just an opportunity that allows me 00:20:08.20\00:20:10.44 to use my tools in a better fashion. Yeah! 00:20:10.47\00:20:12.21 So it depends on which side you're going to. 00:20:12.24\00:20:15.58 Generally I would say that lighting's probably a good 00:20:15.61\00:20:19.11 thing, because most of them are going to be deterred. 00:20:19.15\00:20:21.42 I mean most of the break-ins that we see are not 00:20:21.45\00:20:23.99 in a well lit area. 00:20:24.02\00:20:25.35 It's going to be around the back, or it's going to be in an 00:20:25.39\00:20:26.79 area that's, you know, shaded, and would have some cover, 00:20:26.82\00:20:30.33 some time to work. 00:20:30.36\00:20:33.19 You know, I went to a church not long ago and one of the younger 00:20:33.23\00:20:38.93 members and I were talking. 00:20:38.97\00:20:40.70 I don't know how the subject actually came up, 00:20:40.74\00:20:42.77 but he let me know... 00:20:42.80\00:20:44.71 I guess we had heard about a national incident 00:20:44.74\00:20:48.51 involving a church, and someone had gone in and started firing. 00:20:48.54\00:20:51.95 And he said to me, If that ever happens in our church, 00:20:51.98\00:20:56.55 he said, two of our elders, and one of our deacons are packing. 00:20:56.58\00:21:01.02 They actually carry guns. 00:21:01.06\00:21:04.19 Do we have guns in our churches today? 00:21:04.23\00:21:07.20 Has it actually come to that, that people are 00:21:07.23\00:21:10.77 actually carrying guns in churches? 00:21:10.80\00:21:12.50 And if so, is that legal? 00:21:12.53\00:21:15.30 It absolutely is happening. 00:21:15.34\00:21:18.67 They do exist in churches, and the amount of weapons that are 00:21:18.71\00:21:22.24 finding their way into the churches are going up 00:21:22.28\00:21:24.78 on a consistent basis. 00:21:24.81\00:21:26.48 People want to feel safe in church. 00:21:26.51\00:21:28.75 There are some who feel like it is my responsibility to guardian 00:21:28.78\00:21:32.15 after other congregational members that may not be able 00:21:32.19\00:21:35.12 to protect themselves. 00:21:35.16\00:21:36.49 And so they go obtain a weapons permit to carry, 00:21:36.52\00:21:39.49 and they're carrying to church. 00:21:39.53\00:21:41.30 We've had several conversations with people where we've been 00:21:41.33\00:21:45.70 guarding against, unless the church adopts that as a policy, 00:21:45.73\00:21:50.24 that is don't take matters into your own hands, 00:21:50.27\00:21:52.47 because there's an array of things that could end up 00:21:52.51\00:21:55.74 happening in that type of an event. 00:21:55.78\00:21:57.81 It comes down to your judgment skills, your marksman skills. 00:21:57.85\00:22:01.38 And if a critical event does happen responding 00:22:01.42\00:22:05.25 law enforcement, if they don't recognize you, 00:22:05.29\00:22:07.56 you're another threat with the gun. Right. 00:22:07.59\00:22:09.62 And if anything else, you're taking away from that officer 00:22:09.66\00:22:12.63 potentially working the threat because you're not known. 00:22:12.66\00:22:16.97 So there are a lot of variables that work into this, 00:22:17.00\00:22:19.73 and so I think churches need to be careful, but they need to 00:22:19.77\00:22:23.30 step up at this point in time right now and say, We're making 00:22:23.34\00:22:26.07 a ruling as a church policy, to say, You are, or you aren't, 00:22:26.11\00:22:30.75 or this is how it's going to work, 00:22:30.78\00:22:32.11 and make sure that it's spelled out. 00:22:32.15\00:22:33.85 Now our insurance carriers that we've worked with, 00:22:33.88\00:22:35.92 and talked with have said, We're not covering any type 00:22:35.95\00:22:38.89 of a vigilante, or a person carrying a gun that's not 00:22:38.92\00:22:42.12 authorized by the church in any of those critical incidences. 00:22:42.16\00:22:46.49 Now when you talk about a church authorizing this, 00:22:46.53\00:22:49.70 are you talking about their authorizing a layman 00:22:49.73\00:22:54.04 to carry a gun? or are you talking about their authorizing 00:22:54.07\00:22:56.24 an officer, maybe, a lot of times there are police officers 00:22:56.27\00:23:01.98 that attend a church. 00:23:02.01\00:23:03.35 Are you talking... What are you talking about there? 00:23:03.38\00:23:06.82 Well, to me that's the explanation of the entire policy 00:23:06.85\00:23:09.45 of saying, We're only going to allow bonified sworn law 00:23:09.48\00:23:12.32 enforcement officers to actually carry, and to intercede if some 00:23:12.35\00:23:16.62 thing does happen, until on duty officers are able 00:23:16.66\00:23:18.96 to come and assist. 00:23:18.99\00:23:20.33 That way you're taking out of play of everybody else. 00:23:20.36\00:23:23.87 I've spoken to one church where they've said, If you want to 00:23:23.90\00:23:26.03 bring a gun to church, leave it in the car. 00:23:26.07\00:23:28.04 That's close enough. 00:23:28.07\00:23:29.40 That's as far as we're going to be willing to go. 00:23:29.44\00:23:31.67 But I think each church needs to take a look at it, 00:23:31.71\00:23:33.61 until we hear something from the General Conference or 00:23:33.64\00:23:35.58 North American Division, if there's going to be a blanket 00:23:35.61\00:23:37.91 policy that comes out that each church is going to have to look 00:23:37.95\00:23:40.82 at what their needs are, how quickly they can get a response 00:23:40.85\00:23:43.72 from law enforcement in the event a critical incident 00:23:43.75\00:23:46.65 happens on their property. 00:23:46.69\00:23:49.82 From a legal standpoint you have a lot to consider in addition 00:23:49.86\00:23:53.50 to just if you have a permit. 00:23:53.53\00:23:55.16 So you have a permit; you're legal to carry that gun, 00:23:55.20\00:23:57.37 and you do get involved in a situation, and you help, 00:23:57.40\00:24:00.47 and you possibly even stop it. 00:24:00.50\00:24:01.84 You're not out of the civil litigation arena at all. 00:24:01.87\00:24:06.01 And you've got a host of things to consider. 00:24:06.04\00:24:08.61 You could accidentally injure somebody else. 00:24:08.64\00:24:10.51 I mean if you're in a church, especially if you think of all 00:24:10.55\00:24:12.15 the people in the pews, you know. 00:24:12.18\00:24:13.52 Somebody comes down the isle and they're shooting 00:24:13.55\00:24:14.98 or something, and you take action and do something to stop 00:24:15.02\00:24:17.39 that, what if you hit somebody else? 00:24:17.42\00:24:19.12 You know, criminally you wouldn't be charged, 00:24:19.15\00:24:20.49 but you could lose everything. 00:24:20.52\00:24:21.96 You know you have a... Right. 00:24:21.99\00:24:23.32 Carrying a gun is a personal responsibility that one has to 00:24:23.36\00:24:26.36 come to terms with on their own. 00:24:26.39\00:24:27.73 And you have to accept the responsibility if you're 00:24:27.76\00:24:29.10 going to carry one. 00:24:29.13\00:24:30.47 Yeah. So we're saying, gentlemen, as it stands now 00:24:30.50\00:24:32.90 if a person pulls a gun in church, even in defensive 00:24:32.93\00:24:35.87 posture, because someone else is aggressive, he's on his own. 00:24:35.90\00:24:38.94 I mean it's on you. 00:24:38.97\00:24:40.31 There's no... The church is not going to go behind you. 00:24:40.34\00:24:44.18 It's you're taking your situation in your own hands. 00:24:44.21\00:24:47.08 Absolutely. Yeah. You know now, I was talking again to a 00:24:47.12\00:24:51.15 young man who's Assistant Principal of a large school, 00:24:51.19\00:24:54.56 but it's located about, in fact the officers from the county 00:24:54.59\00:25:00.86 were recently there, and talked to the faculty. 00:25:00.90\00:25:05.47 And they said, We need some people up here who are legally 00:25:05.50\00:25:11.31 licensed, because he said it takes us 28 minutes to respond 00:25:11.34\00:25:16.81 to this area if there were an emergency that took place. 00:25:16.85\00:25:20.75 And you're talking about a lot of people there in that 00:25:20.78\00:25:24.49 particular area, in that school, and that community. 00:25:24.52\00:25:27.56 He said, But it takes us 28 minutes at our best response, 00:25:27.59\00:25:32.03 to get here, and you have no law enforcement 00:25:32.06\00:25:36.53 at this particular school, and you have no security 00:25:36.56\00:25:40.50 on this particular campus. 00:25:40.54\00:25:43.71 So these are things that need to be taken into consideration, 00:25:43.74\00:25:49.04 that needs to be, you just can't arm everybody and say, 00:25:49.08\00:25:53.62 Now you're deputized sort of things. 00:25:53.65\00:25:56.52 It's not like the old west. 00:25:56.55\00:25:58.02 But we do have to do some type of an organized situation. 00:25:58.05\00:26:03.79 But you are saying guns in churches should only be 00:26:03.83\00:26:07.86 done by professionals. Is that right? 00:26:07.90\00:26:09.86 Absolutely! There's two churches in Tennessee that we've worked 00:26:09.90\00:26:13.10 with right now that actually hire out a third party security 00:26:13.13\00:26:16.40 company that actually provides armed uniformed guards 00:26:16.44\00:26:19.61 that protect the property while services are going on during 00:26:19.64\00:26:22.71 board meetings in the evenings while your senior people 00:26:22.74\00:26:26.82 are present on the property. 00:26:26.85\00:26:28.18 And they've gone that route to send a message, but not getting 00:26:28.22\00:26:31.72 church members involved. Yes. 00:26:31.75\00:26:33.66 So that is an option, or to subcontract with off duty 00:26:33.69\00:26:36.19 law enforcement officers who are prepared to handle 00:26:36.22\00:26:40.20 a situation should it arise. 00:26:40.23\00:26:41.70 I have a question for you. 00:26:41.73\00:26:43.33 Because when I was pastoring the Ephesus church in Manhattan, 00:26:43.37\00:26:45.63 we had a big membership; a million and a half dollars 00:26:45.67\00:26:48.67 tithe a year, $247,000.00 local church budget. 00:26:48.70\00:26:51.97 We averaged $18 to $20,000 per Sabbath. 00:26:52.01\00:26:55.34 I had an undertaker, interesting enough, 00:26:55.38\00:26:58.05 who carried a gun every Sabbath. 00:26:58.08\00:26:59.41 I'll call his name, Willie Bathea. 00:26:59.45\00:27:01.18 He was armed every Sabbath, and an excellent marksman. 00:27:01.22\00:27:04.05 What we did was to... 00:27:04.09\00:27:06.05 I think one of the times you're most vulnerable is during 00:27:06.09\00:27:08.12 tithes and offerings. 00:27:08.16\00:27:09.49 You know, you've got people standing there. 00:27:09.52\00:27:10.86 Everybody's head is bowed to pray. 00:27:10.89\00:27:12.23 You've got money there. 00:27:12.26\00:27:13.60 What we did was have them collect the money, 00:27:13.63\00:27:14.96 get it out of the sanctuary immediately, 00:27:15.00\00:27:16.33 then have your prayer, but not heads bowed, eyes closed, 00:27:16.36\00:27:18.93 and you've got all this money kind of stuff. 00:27:18.97\00:27:20.64 Isn't that kind of a very vulnerable time? 00:27:20.67\00:27:22.60 Shouldn't churches try to protect themselves? 00:27:22.64\00:27:24.54 You've got money floating around, you've got people 00:27:24.57\00:27:26.34 who are walking around, and those kinds of things. 00:27:26.37\00:27:28.28 That seems like a very vulnerable time in the service 00:27:28.31\00:27:30.18 when something could happen that could be disastrous. 00:27:30.21\00:27:32.45 And it's easily, quickly done, because we're 00:27:32.48\00:27:35.48 not prepared for that. 00:27:35.52\00:27:36.85 And another school that I was director of safety at, 00:27:36.89\00:27:40.26 what we did after the offering was taken 00:27:40.29\00:27:42.52 it was taken to a count room. 00:27:42.56\00:27:43.89 And then once it was locked in the bag we actually transported 00:27:43.93\00:27:47.40 it to the bank with the deacon; put it in the overnight, 00:27:47.43\00:27:50.83 so therefore it was off the premises. 00:27:50.87\00:27:52.30 Off the premises, yes. 00:27:52.33\00:27:53.67 This is after we came in and found the safe in the treasurers 00:27:53.70\00:27:55.60 office pried from the wall. Right. 00:27:55.64\00:27:57.97 So that was an indicator; okay it's time to make change. 00:27:58.01\00:28:00.74 Make change, yes, yes, yes. 00:28:00.78\00:28:02.11 So it's a real vulnerable time. 00:28:02.14\00:28:04.38 So you want to get that money off the premises, to the bank, 00:28:04.41\00:28:06.88 as quickly as possible. Absolutely. Yeah, yeah. 00:28:06.92\00:28:09.18 Now some of the incidents that we have looked at though over 00:28:09.22\00:28:12.75 history have been maybe an estranged husband coming, 00:28:12.79\00:28:17.93 or someone who had a grudge against someone at the church, 00:28:17.96\00:28:22.36 and those types of people. 00:28:22.40\00:28:24.67 What can you do to protect yourself from 00:28:24.70\00:28:27.54 that type of situation? 00:28:27.57\00:28:29.00 What we've recommended in the past is that if you have, 00:28:29.04\00:28:32.27 or are dealing with a situation like that to get a personal 00:28:32.31\00:28:34.84 order of protection, or to get a, there's a restraining order, 00:28:34.88\00:28:41.55 and then work with the local law enforcement, let your deacons 00:28:41.58\00:28:44.55 know what a person looks like, that says you can't be within X 00:28:44.59\00:28:47.16 amount of feet from this person. 00:28:47.19\00:28:48.52 And then get local law enforcement involved so that 00:28:48.56\00:28:51.66 they're aware that you're attending a certain church 00:28:51.69\00:28:53.93 at a certain time, so they could be prepared. 00:28:53.96\00:28:56.46 And most agencies have a watch list of sorts, and people can 00:28:56.50\00:28:59.63 request to be put on their for different reasons. 00:28:59.67\00:29:01.64 And that comes up. 00:29:01.67\00:29:03.00 You know, this person goes to church here, and they have an 00:29:03.04\00:29:05.54 issue going out with an ex-spouse, and be aware of it. 00:29:05.57\00:29:09.81 And now there's another question that comes up, and as a church 00:29:11.45\00:29:16.85 we're trying to win people. 00:29:16.89\00:29:18.25 We're trying to bring in the lost and help them. 00:29:18.29\00:29:21.66 How would you handle, say for instance, someone who is a 00:29:21.69\00:29:28.00 sexual predator who is on a sexual predator list, 00:29:28.03\00:29:32.53 but they start coming to your church? 00:29:32.57\00:29:34.37 How would you handle that? 00:29:34.40\00:29:37.64 We've allowed that in the past, but they had to have another 00:29:37.67\00:29:42.14 person, such as a guardian, a personal who would be 00:29:42.18\00:29:44.48 responsible for them that would partner with them from the time 00:29:44.51\00:29:47.22 that they entered the property, until after 00:29:47.25\00:29:49.42 the service was over, and then they would escort that person. 00:29:49.45\00:29:52.55 But there was a signed agreement that said, I will be with this 00:29:52.59\00:29:55.72 individual the entire time they are on your property. 00:29:55.76\00:29:58.66 Right, and we likewise in one of the churches that I pastored 00:29:58.69\00:30:03.33 had that very same thing. 00:30:03.37\00:30:05.43 And it worked very well. 00:30:05.47\00:30:06.80 And the person was obedient to the agreement. 00:30:06.84\00:30:11.74 And so that worked out well. 00:30:11.77\00:30:13.24 Yeah. Here's a question then, because you're on a college 00:30:13.27\00:30:15.58 campus. You're dealing with young people. 00:30:15.61\00:30:17.21 Do the rules of engagement vary much when you're dealing with 00:30:17.25\00:30:20.45 a church population, which older more subject to the wrong 00:30:20.48\00:30:24.09 people, and then college campus, you've got young people, 00:30:24.12\00:30:27.32 you've got people who are away from home who don't know, 00:30:27.36\00:30:30.66 I mean we can't send everybody, I guess we could, 00:30:30.69\00:30:33.06 through metal detectors. 00:30:33.09\00:30:34.43 You don't want to do. 00:30:34.46\00:30:35.80 That's kind of a turn off. 00:30:35.83\00:30:37.17 How do you begin to make your population aware of the dangers 00:30:37.20\00:30:41.90 that are around them so that their heads are up 00:30:41.94\00:30:44.47 and their eyes are moving all the time? 00:30:44.51\00:30:46.34 Particularly when you've got young people, 00:30:46.37\00:30:47.71 and you've got so many as on a college campus setting. 00:30:47.74\00:30:50.38 Sure. To put up firearm free zone signs to educate the 00:30:50.41\00:30:55.12 students that the law is clear as far as a student 00:30:55.15\00:30:58.05 on a college campus. 00:30:58.09\00:30:59.42 In the state of Tennessee you cannot have a firearm in the 00:30:59.45\00:31:02.19 dorm, in your car, etcetera. 00:31:02.22\00:31:04.23 You cannot have that. 00:31:04.26\00:31:05.59 So educating them to what the requirements are, 00:31:05.63\00:31:07.63 then partnering with the deans, and anyone else that we can 00:31:07.66\00:31:11.47 partner to reinforce that information to do that. 00:31:11.50\00:31:14.67 And, unfortunately, sometimes people will take advantage of 00:31:14.70\00:31:16.91 that and then they get caught. 00:31:16.94\00:31:18.27 And then that's where local law enforcement comes in, 00:31:18.31\00:31:20.34 and an arrest is made, and charges are filed, 00:31:20.38\00:31:24.65 and we've got to go that way. 00:31:24.68\00:31:26.01 It's difficult for young people to purchase a firearm for the 00:31:26.05\00:31:30.59 amount of money that they cost and not have it close to them. 00:31:30.62\00:31:33.52 It's very difficult, and it's a challenging thing, 00:31:33.56\00:31:36.56 and more and more people are... 00:31:36.59\00:31:38.33 We're finding more and more people... 00:31:38.36\00:31:39.73 I mean look at what the gun sales have happened, 00:31:39.76\00:31:42.00 and how they've soared, and ammunition has been going up in 00:31:42.03\00:31:44.83 price, and harder and harder to find. 00:31:44.87\00:31:46.80 So they're going somewhere. 00:31:46.84\00:31:48.37 So we try to be vigilant in our areas of making sure that we get 00:31:48.90\00:31:53.14 the education out, and then just, like I said, partner with 00:31:53.17\00:31:56.38 as many as we possibly can. 00:31:56.41\00:31:57.75 And if a situation arises deal with it as quickly as possible. 00:31:57.78\00:32:01.22 Let me ask this question, Jim, and forgive me. 00:32:01.25\00:32:03.15 When I send my child to school, off to college, does the school 00:32:03.18\00:32:08.89 maintain or have the right to search their room? 00:32:08.92\00:32:13.19 Can they legally do that if they suspect something, 00:32:13.23\00:32:15.76 or do they fall into kind of the wider set of laws? 00:32:15.80\00:32:19.53 I send my child to Southern; something is suspected, 00:32:19.57\00:32:23.37 they call a general room search. 00:32:23.41\00:32:24.97 Does the school have the right to do that? 00:32:25.01\00:32:26.68 Can they go in and search rooms? 00:32:26.71\00:32:28.74 Yes, they can. When they signed the admittance form to come to 00:32:28.78\00:32:32.98 the school, it says that it can be searched. 00:32:33.01\00:32:35.72 Now we try to do that when there is only probable cause. 00:32:35.75\00:32:38.79 We don't just come and do random searches. 00:32:38.82\00:32:40.72 Now at Southern what we do is we get the dean's to participate. 00:32:40.76\00:32:43.69 So they actually are the ones that go in and do the search, 00:32:43.73\00:32:45.89 and then our officers observe, so that anything that is found 00:32:45.93\00:32:49.10 is not compromised from an evidence standpoint. I see. 00:32:49.13\00:32:51.43 And then if there is an illegal issue there than we contact 00:32:51.47\00:32:53.80 the police department. 00:32:53.84\00:32:55.17 They come in and they take over from there. 00:32:55.20\00:32:56.54 Thank God we have not had any major shooting incident's on any 00:32:57.41\00:33:01.54 of our campuses that I know of. 00:33:01.58\00:33:03.21 But you're saying guns and students, that a no no. 00:33:03.24\00:33:06.48 That's just can't happen. 00:33:06.51\00:33:08.68 Correct, correct. Okay. 00:33:08.72\00:33:10.05 Alright, very, very good. 00:33:10.09\00:33:11.42 One thing to mention with regards to dean's, 00:33:11.45\00:33:14.62 and interaction with students, and with the... 00:33:14.66\00:33:17.73 I'm an Adventist. I've been one my entire life. 00:33:17.76\00:33:19.89 The, you know, the trend is, you know, in the schools 00:33:19.93\00:33:23.43 they try to give everyone a second chance, or look the other 00:33:23.47\00:33:25.60 way, or you deal with things internally. 00:33:25.63\00:33:27.30 But the culture we're getting into now, especially with all 00:33:27.34\00:33:30.31 the violence everyone's exposed to, and video games 00:33:30.34\00:33:32.07 that are very popular that a lot of people play. 00:33:32.11\00:33:35.64 I don't let my kids play any of them, but you get this, 00:33:35.68\00:33:39.38 you've got so much more you have to watch for, 00:33:39.41\00:33:42.02 and things that you might observe as a dean. 00:33:42.05\00:33:44.85 Don't hesitate to make a note of that. 00:33:44.89\00:33:47.12 And you don't have to involve the police with everything, 00:33:47.16\00:33:48.66 but if you see something that seems off, 00:33:48.69\00:33:51.09 bring it to someone's attention. 00:33:51.13\00:33:52.59 Some of these things that have happened in the recent years 00:33:52.63\00:33:54.16 could be avoided if people had just stepped up instead of 00:33:54.20\00:33:57.07 just, Oh, it will be okay. 00:33:57.10\00:33:58.70 I mean it's a different time. 00:33:58.73\00:34:00.07 You know, people are not, a lot of people are not thinking 00:34:00.10\00:34:02.37 good thoughts, and at the student level the deans are the 00:34:02.40\00:34:06.51 one's that are an actor, and to see where they live. 00:34:06.54\00:34:07.88 They see how they conduct themselves when they're not in 00:34:07.91\00:34:11.05 class, and they may be a different person in the dorm 00:34:11.08\00:34:12.85 than when they're in class. 00:34:12.88\00:34:14.22 Things like that keep me on. 00:34:14.25\00:34:15.58 Things like that can be a precursor, 00:34:15.62\00:34:16.95 and something to keep in touch with. 00:34:16.99\00:34:18.59 You know, we talk about this second chance culture, 00:34:18.62\00:34:21.66 and, of course, having a pastoral heart, 00:34:21.69\00:34:23.89 talk to me just a second, gentlemen. 00:34:23.93\00:34:25.59 There are certain things that you don't really have an option. 00:34:25.63\00:34:29.06 They have to be reported. 00:34:29.10\00:34:30.47 What are those kinds of things? 00:34:30.50\00:34:32.20 You know, if I see this, I gotta report this. 00:34:32.23\00:34:34.40 This is not, Oh well, okay, we'll just keep this between us, 00:34:34.44\00:34:36.44 but there are certain things I know that have to be reported. 00:34:36.47\00:34:38.71 What are those kinds of things? 00:34:38.74\00:34:40.41 I know ours vary some from local law enforcement. 00:34:40.44\00:34:43.55 We're bound by Cleary laws, which we have to report on 00:34:43.58\00:34:46.41 several different categories such as rape, 00:34:46.45\00:34:48.95 murder, thefts, etcetera, that type of thing that we have to 00:34:48.98\00:34:52.55 put out there for people to be able to go on the web and look 00:34:52.59\00:34:55.76 and see what our crime rate and base is. 00:34:55.79\00:34:57.93 Now law enforcement obviously has a different... 00:34:57.96\00:35:00.40 It can be a lot less of a standard than the school would 00:35:00.43\00:35:03.06 have, I would think, because unless it's an actual crime 00:35:03.10\00:35:05.93 you're observing you really have no burden to take it 00:35:05.97\00:35:07.54 to law enforcement. 00:35:07.57\00:35:08.90 Okay, okay. If you're getting... 00:35:08.94\00:35:10.27 When a student says someone is harassing me. 00:35:10.31\00:35:12.47 I'm getting innuendos, maybe touching some kind of thing, 00:35:12.51\00:35:15.64 can I just say, Let's bring the two kids together. 00:35:15.68\00:35:17.71 We'll sit down and we'll talk about it 00:35:17.75\00:35:19.08 and just let it end there. 00:35:19.11\00:35:20.45 Does that have to be reported? 00:35:20.48\00:35:21.82 It is to be reported. 00:35:21.85\00:35:23.18 That is one of the Cleary reportable... 00:35:23.22\00:35:24.55 And we have to report it as it's given to us. 00:35:24.59\00:35:27.56 So, therefore, if a person comes in and says, 00:35:27.59\00:35:29.62 This just happened to me. 00:35:29.66\00:35:30.99 We have to take that at face value. Okay. 00:35:31.03\00:35:32.66 Now what we can do, we report that as a statistic. 00:35:32.69\00:35:35.36 We have the police department come out. 00:35:35.40\00:35:37.03 Their criminal investigation division can go back and now 00:35:37.07\00:35:39.67 interview both parties. 00:35:39.70\00:35:41.04 If they find out that the complaint was unfounded 00:35:41.07\00:35:43.17 the statistic can be removed, but it can only come from 00:35:43.20\00:35:46.31 a bonifide police department at this point in time to be able to 00:35:46.34\00:35:48.74 remove that statistic. Okay. 00:35:48.78\00:35:50.31 But there's more of that coming with date situations, 00:35:50.35\00:35:53.05 with date rape, with harassments, 00:35:53.08\00:35:55.58 to even through electronics. 00:35:55.62\00:35:57.49 Yeah. See, that's where I'm going. 00:35:57.52\00:35:58.85 That a professor or an administrator doesn't have the 00:35:58.89\00:36:01.19 privilege to say, Okay, well he's a nice guy. 00:36:01.22\00:36:03.69 We won't say anything. 00:36:03.73\00:36:05.06 We'll just kind of keep this between ourselves. 00:36:05.09\00:36:06.43 We'll pray about it and just let it go. 00:36:06.46\00:36:07.80 But if someone makes an aggressive move 00:36:07.83\00:36:09.63 that's got to be reported. 00:36:09.66\00:36:11.00 It does. Yeah. And we're actually, not just at Southern, 00:36:11.03\00:36:13.50 but across the country universities are reporting 00:36:13.54\00:36:17.47 more and more of the cyber stuff where one person may not 00:36:17.51\00:36:21.58 even be in the same state. Yes. 00:36:21.61\00:36:23.24 And so there is an harassment aspect, and an intimidation 00:36:23.28\00:36:26.58 that's coming from that, which makes a student feel very 00:36:26.61\00:36:28.58 uncomfortable, because they never know 00:36:28.62\00:36:29.95 if they could show up. 00:36:29.98\00:36:31.32 They could walk outside their dorm room 00:36:31.35\00:36:32.69 and here is this person. 00:36:32.72\00:36:34.06 Yeah, yeah, yeah, wow. 00:36:34.09\00:36:35.52 You know, it's amazing that things now that are reported 00:36:35.56\00:36:39.56 when we went to school, or at least when I went to school, 00:36:39.59\00:36:43.20 and these were things that were very definitely handled 00:36:43.23\00:36:49.90 all by the campus itself, and were never reported 00:36:49.94\00:36:53.41 to any law enforcement at all. 00:36:53.44\00:36:56.08 Although I will say that where I went to school my early 00:36:56.11\00:37:00.22 college years was at Southwestern. 00:37:00.25\00:37:02.85 They did have a marshal in the city, which was also 00:37:02.88\00:37:07.22 kind of took care of the school security, so to speak. 00:37:07.26\00:37:12.19 And it was sort of the beginning of what we see now, 00:37:12.23\00:37:16.87 which is far more a full fledged police department 00:37:16.90\00:37:19.97 in that particular area, and also campus security as well. 00:37:20.00\00:37:26.37 So in the old days it was just one of the students was 00:37:26.41\00:37:29.84 a night watchman; went around and plugged 00:37:29.88\00:37:31.55 the different places. 00:37:31.58\00:37:33.18 And we used to try to pull jokes on him and scare him. 00:37:33.21\00:37:35.98 We succeeded a few times. 00:37:36.02\00:37:38.92 But it's such a different world that we're living in now. 00:37:38.95\00:37:42.79 And so many times some of us want to keep thinking in terms 00:37:42.82\00:37:48.86 of the world in which we used to live in, 00:37:48.90\00:37:50.83 and it's really not that way anymore. Yeah. 00:37:50.87\00:37:54.47 And, by the way, Officer Hurd talked about being an 00:37:54.50\00:37:57.04 Adventist all of his life. 00:37:57.07\00:37:58.97 I can vouch for that because his father, I knew his father 00:37:59.01\00:38:03.95 back in New England, and he came to my church 00:38:03.98\00:38:08.15 there in Connecticut. 00:38:08.18\00:38:10.52 And I appreciated him very much, and happy to hear that he's 00:38:10.55\00:38:15.06 still in good health. 00:38:15.09\00:38:16.42 Yep, he's doing good. 00:38:16.46\00:38:17.79 When we talk about, and I remember growing up having 00:38:17.83\00:38:23.06 fire safety drills. 00:38:23.10\00:38:24.43 They kind of annoyed us. 00:38:24.47\00:38:25.80 You have to get up, and line up and, you know, 00:38:25.83\00:38:27.17 file a single file; that kind of thing. 00:38:27.20\00:38:28.54 And I suspect that's something that schools 00:38:28.57\00:38:32.04 should do at all levels. 00:38:32.07\00:38:33.41 Should churches even do that also? 00:38:33.44\00:38:34.78 I, and to be honest with you, I can't remember anyone of the 00:38:34.81\00:38:36.95 seven or so churches I pastored, us ever having a fire drill. 00:38:36.98\00:38:40.28 You know we come to church and pray and sing and go home. 00:38:40.32\00:38:43.22 We never did that. Is that something that schools and 00:38:43.25\00:38:45.29 churches should do even to this day? 00:38:45.32\00:38:47.42 I personally believe that you have an obligation to a 00:38:47.46\00:38:50.06 congregation to be able to do that. 00:38:50.09\00:38:52.19 And that's from personal experiences where we actually 00:38:52.23\00:38:55.16 had a fire at one of the churches that I was attending. 00:38:55.20\00:38:57.27 And when we opened up the doors there was smoke going in. 00:38:57.30\00:39:00.40 And so stood up and said, There's a fire in the building. 00:39:00.44\00:39:03.71 We need to evacuate. 00:39:03.74\00:39:05.07 Everybody kept paying attention to the front. 00:39:05.11\00:39:06.81 Finally, until the Lord blessed me with a good set of lungs. 00:39:06.84\00:39:09.44 I went to the front and said, The building is on fire. 00:39:09.48\00:39:11.98 Move outside. Do it now! 00:39:12.01\00:39:14.12 That grabbed people's attention, and they started moving out. 00:39:14.15\00:39:17.12 But, I mean, the entire basement was full of smoke. 00:39:17.15\00:39:19.89 There actually was a fire in the building. 00:39:19.92\00:39:22.32 And so we don't think about that at church, 00:39:22.36\00:39:24.23 as far as that goes, but how do you have to evacuate people? 00:39:24.26\00:39:28.50 Where are you going to evacuate them? 00:39:28.53\00:39:30.13 A lot of times we want to evacuate them 00:39:30.17\00:39:31.63 to the parking lot. 00:39:31.67\00:39:33.00 That's maybe where our Fire Department's coming. 00:39:33.03\00:39:34.47 So it's important to partner with the Fire Department 00:39:34.50\00:39:36.47 and say, Okay, if you have to do a full congregation evacuation 00:39:36.50\00:39:40.91 where do you want us to go, so therefore we're not in the way? 00:39:40.94\00:39:44.28 Same thing with severe weather. 00:39:44.31\00:39:45.81 If you have tornados or severe thunder storms, if there's a 00:39:45.85\00:39:49.62 basement to the church how are you going to get that number 00:39:49.65\00:39:52.25 of people safely downstairs in the shortest amount of time? 00:39:52.29\00:39:55.26 So a pre-plan needs to be put in place that covers all hazards, 00:39:55.29\00:39:59.33 and then practice that plan. 00:39:59.36\00:40:01.60 That's excellent. I don't know if you've ever been pastoring 00:40:01.63\00:40:05.87 in a church that caught on fire, but we've tried to catch them 00:40:05.90\00:40:09.60 on fire spiritually. 00:40:09.64\00:40:10.97 But I actually, in Dallas the church caught on fire. 00:40:11.01\00:40:16.24 It was an electrical fire. 00:40:16.28\00:40:18.41 And all of a sudden one of the deacons came in and ordered an 00:40:18.45\00:40:24.39 evacuation, and I'm preaching. 00:40:24.42\00:40:26.86 Sometime I'll show you that video. 00:40:26.89\00:40:29.52 It's quite humorous. 00:40:29.56\00:40:31.39 I'm trying to hold them for a little bit longer to finish my 00:40:31.43\00:40:34.66 sermon, and he's trying to get them out. 00:40:34.70\00:40:38.20 But we did have to finally evacuate. 00:40:38.23\00:40:41.20 But it was an electrical fire coming to the building. 00:40:41.24\00:40:44.21 Actually the building itself wasn't on fire, but it burned 00:40:44.24\00:40:48.78 a couple of cars out in the parking lot. 00:40:48.81\00:40:50.51 And it was quite an incident. 00:40:50.55\00:40:53.45 Things like this happen. 00:40:53.48\00:40:55.48 And just because you've gone to church and it hasn't happened 00:40:55.52\00:40:59.39 doesn't mean that it won't. 00:40:59.42\00:41:01.39 And so we have to be prepared for these things. 00:41:01.42\00:41:06.43 We're talking, even this morning, about a fire drill 00:41:06.46\00:41:09.50 here in our office, because we honestly, I believe, 00:41:09.53\00:41:14.04 have some areas of concern here for evacuation. 00:41:14.07\00:41:19.24 And we want to make sure that we're doing that. 00:41:19.27\00:41:21.81 What about the personal safety of individuals at our churches? 00:41:21.84\00:41:28.15 Our personal safety, again it goes back to everybody being 00:41:28.18\00:41:32.05 responsible for their own. 00:41:32.09\00:41:33.46 But some of the concerns that have come to my attention over 00:41:33.49\00:41:37.33 the years is that not necessarily during church 00:41:37.36\00:41:40.13 services, but when church services are being offered 00:41:40.16\00:41:43.47 to people such as 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon and someone 00:41:43.50\00:41:46.70 comes in that's disturbed, or is feeling the need to pray. 00:41:46.74\00:41:50.31 A lot of times the people that they're praying with are tucked 00:41:50.34\00:41:52.54 into a cubby office somewhere way back in the middle of 00:41:52.57\00:41:55.28 nowhere, so to speak, or our office staff is sitting there 00:41:55.31\00:41:59.08 and there's nowhere for them to go. 00:41:59.11\00:42:01.08 So we need to start looking at how we can protect them. 00:42:01.12\00:42:04.25 And it's the balance between being protected and aware, 00:42:04.29\00:42:07.52 but not becoming paranoid before we take things too far. 00:42:07.56\00:42:10.89 So there has to be that balance. 00:42:10.93\00:42:12.59 But there are a lot of times that there may be only one or 00:42:12.63\00:42:14.76 two people in a church. 00:42:14.80\00:42:16.13 And there, unfortunately, have been attacks in churches 00:42:16.16\00:42:18.83 where people have been hurt, you know, things stolen 00:42:18.87\00:42:21.64 even during the day. 00:42:21.67\00:42:23.00 And I know from some of my experience robberies in homes 00:42:23.04\00:42:26.94 have actually changed to where now they're hoping to catch you 00:42:26.98\00:42:29.54 at home, where before they always wanted you out. 00:42:29.58\00:42:32.28 Well, if I catch you at home in a vulnerable position 00:42:32.31\00:42:34.78 you'll give me your valuables. 00:42:34.82\00:42:36.15 I'll be out the door quicker. 00:42:36.18\00:42:37.52 Yeah, there are a lot more of them during hours when people 00:42:37.55\00:42:42.06 are home, nighttime when people are sleeping, 00:42:42.09\00:42:44.79 or just coming home from work, so it's not just 00:42:44.83\00:42:47.53 abandoned houses anymore. 00:42:47.56\00:42:49.60 So it's more of an armed robbery type thing rather 00:42:49.63\00:42:52.90 than just a break in. 00:42:52.93\00:42:54.27 Kind of like a home invasion. 00:42:54.30\00:42:55.64 Home invasion, wow! 00:42:55.67\00:42:57.07 The same things we were talking about the offering. 00:42:57.11\00:42:58.51 It's when it's available, because you're going to give 00:42:58.54\00:43:01.04 that up versus hazarding somebody's life. 00:43:01.08\00:43:03.58 Understood, yeah, yeah. 00:43:03.61\00:43:05.01 When I got here I noticed one thing about the 00:43:05.05\00:43:06.85 principle offices here. 00:43:06.88\00:43:08.22 All of them have windows in it. 00:43:08.25\00:43:09.62 There are no closed offices that don't have windows. 00:43:09.65\00:43:12.15 Even brother Gilley's office has a window in it. 00:43:12.19\00:43:15.09 I think that's a wise thing that there's never 00:43:15.12\00:43:17.53 this total seclusion. 00:43:17.56\00:43:18.96 When I was counseling in New York I always 00:43:18.99\00:43:21.46 left my door unlocked. 00:43:21.50\00:43:22.83 You know, you go in and lock the door kind of thing? 00:43:22.86\00:43:24.57 It sends the wrong message, plus it opens you up to a lot 00:43:24.60\00:43:27.34 of stuff that you don't need. 00:43:27.37\00:43:28.84 So little things like that I think are wise. 00:43:28.87\00:43:31.01 We've got a video. It's got a little strong content, 00:43:31.04\00:43:34.34 so we kind of need to warn our audience that it's coming, 00:43:34.38\00:43:36.95 but I think it's something you wanted to show. 00:43:36.98\00:43:38.78 Before we lose our hour here I think we should go to that, 00:43:38.81\00:43:41.45 and then we can kind of reflect on it after we watch it. 00:43:41.48\00:43:44.02 So let's go to that video just now. 00:43:44.05\00:43:45.95 It may feel like just another day at the office, 00:43:53.06\00:43:55.66 but occasionally life feels more like an action 00:43:57.80\00:44:01.44 movie than reality. 00:44:01.47\00:44:03.27 The authorities are working hard to protect you, 00:44:07.78\00:44:10.25 and to protect our public spaces. 00:44:10.28\00:44:12.35 But sometimes bad people do bad things. 00:44:23.69\00:44:27.60 Their motivations are different. 00:44:30.63\00:44:32.37 The warning signs may vary, but the devastating 00:44:36.81\00:44:41.14 effects are the same. 00:44:41.18\00:44:42.58 And, unfortunately, you need to be prepared for the worst. 00:44:46.11\00:44:50.22 If you are to ever find yourself in the middle of an active 00:45:07.24\00:45:10.14 shooter event your survival may depend on whether 00:45:10.17\00:45:13.91 or not you have a plan. 00:45:13.94\00:45:15.31 The plan doesn't have to be complicated. 00:45:15.34\00:45:18.15 There are three things you could do that make a difference: 00:45:20.92\00:45:24.02 run, hide, fight. First and foremost, if you can get out do. 00:45:24.05\00:45:33.93 Always try an escape or evacuate even when 00:45:34.70\00:45:37.80 others insist on staying. 00:45:37.83\00:45:39.30 Encourage others to leave with you, but don't let them slow you 00:45:39.33\00:45:43.81 down with indecision. 00:45:43.84\00:45:45.27 Remember what's important: you, not your stuff. 00:45:49.44\00:45:52.75 Leave your belongings behind and try to find 00:45:53.75\00:45:56.15 a way to get out safely. 00:45:56.18\00:45:57.62 Trying to get yourself out of harms way needs to be your 00:46:00.26\00:46:02.79 number one priority. 00:46:02.82\00:46:04.46 Once you are out of the line of fire, try to prevent others 00:46:08.66\00:46:11.93 from walking into the danger zone and call 911. 00:46:11.97\00:46:15.30 If you can't get out safely, you need to find a place to hide. 00:46:35.86\00:46:39.39 Act quickly and quietly. 00:46:51.87\00:46:53.34 Try to secure your hiding place the best you can. 00:46:54.28\00:46:57.05 Turn out lights, and if possible remember to lock doors. 00:46:57.08\00:47:03.25 Silence your ringer and vibration mode 00:47:04.09\00:47:06.29 on your cell phone. 00:47:06.32\00:47:07.66 And if you can't find a safe room or closet, try to conceal 00:47:09.89\00:47:14.00 yourself behind large objects that may protect you. 00:47:14.03\00:47:17.03 Do your best to remain quiet and calm. 00:47:18.07\00:47:20.04 As a last resort, if your life is at risk, whether you are 00:47:35.35\00:47:40.62 alone or working together as a group fight. 00:47:40.66\00:47:44.19 Act with aggression. 00:47:45.06\00:47:46.46 Improvise weapons. 00:47:46.83\00:47:48.30 Disarm him, and commit to taking the shooter 00:47:48.33\00:47:52.57 down, no matter what. 00:47:52.60\00:47:55.20 Try to be aware of your environment. 00:48:09.42\00:48:11.05 Always have an exit plan. 00:48:12.59\00:48:13.92 Know that in an incident like this victims are 00:48:14.62\00:48:17.66 generally chosen randomly. 00:48:17.69\00:48:19.16 The event is unpredictable and may evolve quickly. 00:48:19.63\00:48:23.37 The first responders on the scene are not there to evacuate 00:48:26.23\00:48:29.57 or tend to the injured. 00:48:29.60\00:48:31.01 They are well trained and are there to stop the shooter. 00:48:31.04\00:48:34.71 Your actions can make a difference for your 00:48:51.86\00:48:54.13 safety and survival. 00:48:54.16\00:48:55.83 Be aware and be prepared. 00:48:55.86\00:48:58.70 And if you find yourself facing an active shooter, 00:49:00.14\00:49:02.94 there are three key things you need to remember 00:49:02.97\00:49:05.94 to survive: run, hide, fight. 00:49:05.97\00:49:12.08 Excellent! You know the thing that jumps out at you is 00:49:29.76\00:49:32.20 that fight is last. 00:49:32.23\00:49:33.57 Yeah, it's last not first. 00:49:33.60\00:49:35.47 Last, right. Don't go and try to be a cowboy or hero. 00:49:35.50\00:49:37.84 That's last. And I think that's very, very important. 00:49:37.87\00:49:40.18 Yeah, and you know it's too bad that we have to actually look 00:49:40.21\00:49:45.81 at this type of thing today, but we do. 00:49:45.85\00:49:48.08 And I applaud those who put that video together, 00:49:48.12\00:49:51.05 because it is going to save lives. It is. 00:49:51.09\00:49:55.36 You know a plan of action, should the unthinkable take 00:49:55.39\00:50:00.00 place... If enough people can look at this, see this, 00:50:00.03\00:50:04.27 they realize first of all run. 00:50:04.30\00:50:07.24 You've got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em. 00:50:07.27\00:50:09.97 Know when to walk away, and know when to run. 00:50:10.01\00:50:12.77 And there's a time to run. 00:50:12.81\00:50:14.21 And then second was hide. 00:50:14.24\00:50:18.21 And if you can't run then hide. 00:50:18.25\00:50:21.15 And if you can't even then if you can't stay away from them 00:50:21.18\00:50:25.82 resist, because it's amazing how the resistance to some of 00:50:25.85\00:50:32.76 these individuals stops them. 00:50:32.79\00:50:34.53 They are not accustomed to it. 00:50:34.56\00:50:36.73 And they weren't planning on it, I think in many cases. 00:50:36.77\00:50:41.80 So the resistance in many cases pays off for people. 00:50:41.84\00:50:47.48 If they cannot run, cannot hide, then to resist. 00:50:47.51\00:50:51.08 Officer Hurd, you talked about, when we were watching the video, 00:50:51.11\00:50:53.95 you mentioned it's a good thing to invite law enforcement 00:50:53.98\00:50:56.95 into your building, maybe to give seminars, have lectures. 00:50:56.99\00:51:01.79 What would they do when they come? 00:51:01.82\00:51:03.66 Well, most in an active shooter situation, or any type of 00:51:03.96\00:51:07.66 shooting the police are going to get dispatched. 00:51:07.70\00:51:09.26 And if it's something like a shooter on a campus, 00:51:09.30\00:51:11.70 or a larger thing, there's going to be, 00:51:11.73\00:51:13.87 most areas have a team of some sort. 00:51:13.90\00:51:16.24 You know, swat team, sort team, a special 00:51:16.27\00:51:18.51 operations team of some sort. 00:51:18.54\00:51:20.08 We look forward to opportunities to train. 00:51:20.11\00:51:23.85 And if we're invited to a church, or to a school like 00:51:23.88\00:51:26.78 Southern University, we've been very familiar with the campus, 00:51:26.82\00:51:29.48 and it gives us an opportunity to make pre-plans. 00:51:29.52\00:51:32.19 You know, map out the campus, learn your fire safety plans, 00:51:32.22\00:51:36.12 your exit plans, where critical people are. 00:51:36.16\00:51:38.99 If you have the opportunity, if you're the head of the school, 00:51:39.03\00:51:43.10 or Administrator, or the head of a church, 00:51:43.13\00:51:45.13 invite the local law enforcement. 00:51:45.17\00:51:46.50 You'll be surprised most of them will be very happy to come 00:51:46.53\00:51:49.04 see your facility, and become familiar with the procedures, 00:51:49.07\00:51:51.41 so they can better help you in the event of an emergency. 00:51:51.47\00:51:53.78 So call them before you need them. 00:51:53.81\00:51:55.41 Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:51:55.44\00:51:57.01 Great idea. Alright. 00:51:57.05\00:52:00.98 We didn't talk about or touch on mental health. 00:52:01.02\00:52:04.65 Walk us through what you have in mind there. 00:52:04.69\00:52:10.23 For us, again, we partner with the local police department 00:52:10.26\00:52:13.70 to make sure that any threat that they perceive from the 00:52:13.73\00:52:16.67 community as well as now on campus, we have a group that 00:52:16.70\00:52:19.67 gets together that looks at behavior 00:52:19.70\00:52:22.24 that could be disturbing. 00:52:22.27\00:52:23.61 And what we're doing, we talked about earlier in the show, 00:52:23.64\00:52:26.17 is that it needs to be, this needs to be brought up, 00:52:26.21\00:52:29.51 then another thing needs to be brought up. 00:52:29.54\00:52:30.98 Because if I act out in my office, 00:52:31.01\00:52:33.11 it's looked at as a single event. 00:52:33.15\00:52:34.72 But then if I'm at another department on campus 00:52:34.75\00:52:36.99 and I act out, and if it's a behavior that continues to 00:52:37.02\00:52:39.89 deteriorate those are indicators. 00:52:39.92\00:52:42.12 And at least we need to get together and look. 00:52:42.16\00:52:44.23 And then we can talk with the police department and say, 00:52:44.26\00:52:46.46 Have you had any interactions with this individual? 00:52:46.49\00:52:49.10 And it helps us at least attempt to isolate potential threats 00:52:49.13\00:52:54.77 prior to them happening. 00:52:54.80\00:52:56.14 We work with our counselors on the campus, as well as going 00:52:56.17\00:52:59.24 back to the dean's, etc. 00:52:59.27\00:53:01.08 Yeah, yeah. I'll tell you what we did when I was in New York. 00:53:01.11\00:53:03.31 We actually adopted the local police precinct. 00:53:03.35\00:53:05.51 We had adoption services. 00:53:05.55\00:53:06.88 We had adoption papers. 00:53:06.92\00:53:08.25 We brought them in to service. 00:53:08.28\00:53:09.62 We had them walk through our building. 00:53:09.65\00:53:10.99 We adopted the local 128 Precinct: 250 guys. 00:53:11.02\00:53:15.39 We had all their birth days. 00:53:15.42\00:53:16.76 We had them in the church a lot. 00:53:16.79\00:53:18.13 And it really worked out well to have them in our building. 00:53:18.16\00:53:21.16 We were in their building a lot. 00:53:21.20\00:53:22.53 And we adopted them. 00:53:22.56\00:53:23.90 We formally adopted the local police precinct. 00:53:23.93\00:53:25.90 I think that's an excellent plan. 00:53:25.93\00:53:27.94 It really is. Well listen, we want you to be able to 00:53:27.97\00:53:32.64 get a copy of this. 00:53:32.67\00:53:34.01 And you can get it from us, or we have an address roll 00:53:34.04\00:53:37.21 if you'd like to contact Kevin Penrod or Officer Hurd 00:53:37.25\00:53:43.22 this is how you can do it: 00:53:43.25\00:53:44.82 Gentlemen, before we just sort of lose you, 00:54:32.43\00:54:34.80 answer this question for me. 00:54:34.84\00:54:36.54 I'm a pastor, I'm a school board chairman, 00:54:36.57\00:54:38.71 I'm a principal of a school. 00:54:38.74\00:54:40.08 What is the one thing, or two things that I can do to be most 00:54:40.11\00:54:43.14 effective to change the culture of my church so that we are 00:54:43.18\00:54:46.15 aware of the things that are going on around us? 00:54:46.18\00:54:47.88 I would say, 1. Be honest with your congregation, 00:54:47.92\00:54:52.05 and get the feedback from them. 00:54:52.09\00:54:54.22 The other thing that has just been put together through 00:54:54.26\00:54:57.63 Dale Hodges at Andrews University. 00:54:57.66\00:55:00.10 He's the founder and president of PASS. 00:55:00.13\00:55:02.50 And that is Professional Adventist Safety and Security. 00:55:02.53\00:55:06.17 It's a group that's now met three years in a row. 00:55:06.20\00:55:08.17 If you go to the General Conference web page and 00:55:08.20\00:55:10.61 type in pass, you'll get led to a web page that describes 00:55:10.64\00:55:14.34 what the entity is, and it is for all Seventh-day Adventists. 00:55:14.38\00:55:18.18 It can be churches, health care, schools, etc., 00:55:18.21\00:55:22.78 and it's the best practices. 00:55:22.82\00:55:24.72 And we've just finished our third conference, 00:55:24.75\00:55:26.72 and we're growing quickly. 00:55:26.76\00:55:29.12 And the idea is to get out the word, and a partnership with 00:55:29.16\00:55:33.09 everybody that we possibly can inside the church, 00:55:33.13\00:55:35.30 or inside the religion, as far as reaching everybody on 00:55:35.33\00:55:39.17 having the best practices possible. 00:55:39.20\00:55:40.74 So that is a brand new thing. 00:55:40.77\00:55:43.57 We're happy that the General Conference has jumped on board 00:55:43.61\00:55:46.41 and supports, and there's information on that webpage too 00:55:46.44\00:55:50.18 that is updated on a consistent basis for that. 00:55:50.21\00:55:53.25 Now there are others that could be a part of that, 00:55:53.28\00:55:56.38 other churches, other denominations, other schools. 00:55:56.42\00:55:58.99 Absolutely, yes. 00:55:59.02\00:56:00.36 It's not limited only to Seventh-day Adventists? 00:56:00.39\00:56:01.86 Correct, at this point. 00:56:01.89\00:56:03.22 Right. So now what are they going to find when 00:56:03.26\00:56:06.36 they go to that site? 00:56:06.39\00:56:07.73 They're going to find talking points, safety tips. 00:56:07.76\00:56:11.90 We're going to be putting out DVD's on best practices, 00:56:11.93\00:56:15.70 a networking of policy sharing with other... 00:56:15.74\00:56:19.04 Right now it's been schools that have been the 00:56:19.07\00:56:20.88 leaders in this so far. 00:56:20.91\00:56:22.24 But like disaster plans, or evacuation plans, 00:56:22.28\00:56:25.01 we'd be willing to share our information with somebody 00:56:25.05\00:56:27.58 so they don't have to re-create the wheel. 00:56:27.62\00:56:29.28 They can also just go ahead and utilize what we've tested, 00:56:29.32\00:56:32.09 and put that in to. 00:56:32.12\00:56:33.46 And that would help, I would think, a lot of our church 00:56:33.49\00:56:35.22 people from their security standpoint of not having to make 00:56:35.26\00:56:38.49 up something if they already have a pre-made plan that 00:56:38.53\00:56:40.83 they can put into place. 00:56:40.86\00:56:42.20 They may have to tweak it some to fit their needs. 00:56:42.23\00:56:44.67 We recommend highly that you go to the site. 00:56:44.70\00:56:49.37 Get that information. 00:56:49.40\00:56:51.54 We also are offering this DVD absolutely free to any church, 00:56:51.57\00:56:56.95 or school that would like to have it. 00:56:56.98\00:56:59.95 Any organization that has people that come and are part of it 00:56:59.98\00:57:05.29 like a school, or church, or fellowship; 00:57:05.32\00:57:08.29 we want you to have this. 00:57:08.32\00:57:10.76 And it's a place to start. 00:57:10.79\00:57:12.79 We realize that this DVD is not the answer; not the end. 00:57:12.83\00:57:16.67 But we are trying to create awareness, so that you do seek 00:57:16.70\00:57:21.27 professional help, professional answers. 00:57:21.30\00:57:24.51 And we're so happy that Kevin, you could be with us, 00:57:24.54\00:57:29.04 and Officer Hurd, you could be with us. 00:57:29.08\00:57:31.68 Thank you so much for coming and sharing. 00:57:31.71\00:57:35.52 Because we believe that this is going to save lives. 00:57:35.55\00:57:38.95 And, by the way, we thank you for supporting 3ABN. 00:57:38.99\00:57:43.63 And we just pray that you will keep on keeping on with Jesus 00:57:43.66\00:57:47.36 Christ our Lord, He's our God, He's our Savior. 00:57:47.40\00:57:50.73 He's the One that sustains us, and He is the One 00:57:50.77\00:57:54.47 that will be with us. 00:57:54.50\00:57:55.84 May God bless you. 00:57:55.87\00:57:57.54
