00:01 Jesus said follow me and I will make you
00:03 fishers of men. Today is a wonderful day 00:06 because there are many people that are caught 00:08 in the gospel net, stay tuned to find out more. 00:48 Dar es Salaam meaning "House of Peace" 00:50 in Arabic is the largest city in Tanzania. 00:53 It is also the country's richest city and a 00:56 regionally important economic center. 00:58 The region has a population of over 2.5 million.' 01:04 The Sultan of Zanzibar who needed a port on 01:06 mainland founded the city in the 19th century. 01:09 It is situated on a massive natural harbor 01:12 on the eastern coast of Africa on the beautiful 01:14 Indian Ocean, the world's third largest ocean 01:18 covering about 20 percent of the earth's surface. 01:22 AWR is blanketing major portions of Africa 01:25 in the languages of the people. 01:27 Our shortwave broadcast are reaching the vast 01:29 countryside while our FM stations are reaching 01:32 right into the concrete jungles of major cities, 01:35 touching the hearts and lives of city dwellers, 01:38 helping them discover the joy of 01:40 knowing the creator God of the universe. 01:45 Helen, I know you came a long ways to be 01:46 with us here at studio today, and I appreciate 01:49 you very much. I am also grateful. 01:53 And I know it's a sacrifice for you because 01:55 I saw you had your little child with you too. 01:57 So, your child has to be away 01:58 from you right now as we talk. Yes. 02:01 How old your baby? He is 2-years-old. 02:05 Okay. Now, have you always been a Christian? 02:10 No. Would you mind sharing with me a little bit 02:13 of what your life was like before 02:16 you became a Christian? 02:19 When I was a teenager, I used to go dancing 02:22 and I also smoked cigarettes and I wasn't 02:25 keeping good company and that's the reason 02:28 I got pregnant. Then I moved here to the 02:33 city of Dar es Salaam and moved in with my aunt 02:37 who is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 02:40 that's when I first heard the AWR 02:43 morning star FM radio. When people sent in 02:47 their prayer requests I would hear that 02:49 their prayers got answered. 02:52 You began listening to testimonies of other 02:55 people answering prayers. How do that 02:57 touch your life and heart? 03:02 My child used to cry. He refused to eat and 03:06 he used to vomit, it was horrible. 03:08 Then I heard people getting answers to their 03:11 prayers on the radio, so I sent my prayer 03:14 request in, I said if God answers my prayer 03:17 I would believe in that God. 03:20 So you did send in your prayer request 03:22 and God answer it for you. 03:26 I sent my prayer request to the program 03:28 presenter and within two days my child stopped 03:31 vomiting and he developed in appetite 03:34 that's when I was convinced. 03:37 So that moment is that when you really gave 03:39 your heart to God then? 03:41 Receiving an answer to my pray and listening 03:44 to the radio programs resulted in me giving 03:48 my life to Jesus, then I was encouraged 03:51 to read the Bible on my own. I was growing 03:54 progressively and eventually because of the 03:56 radio ministry. I decided to get baptized. 04:00 So please tell me Helen now is the old person 04:03 different than the new person? 04:05 What's the new person like in comparison to the 04:07 old person who used to run around 04:08 and do all the bad things? 04:11 Now I'm at peace. I am free and I believe that 04:15 my life is in the hands of Jesus. 04:18 I know that even if I die right now I'll die 04:21 in Christ and then he comes again by his grace 04:24 I'll be translated into the kingdom of glory. 04:28 Helen, thank you so much for coming today, 04:30 I appreciate it greatly. 04:37 His father was a Scottish minister born in 04:39 the year 1645 who was he? 04:42 The infamous Captain Kidd, the buccaneer who 04:44 pillaged and plundered, he fought against the 04:46 French who got tremendous wealth by being 04:49 the notorious pirate. He sailed these seas 04:52 back and forth, Madagascar, Zanzibar, 04:56 over here to Tanzania. What kind of a man was he? 05:00 Well, we may never know exactly but we know that 05:03 he was hanged in the year 1701 and that was the 05:06 end of his pillaging and his plundering. 05:09 Recently they think they discovered his ship, 05:11 the Adventurer, not too far off the coast 05:14 the Madagascar. We are going to hopefully 05:16 checkout some of these areas soon and let you 05:19 know little bit more about Captain Kidd. 05:23 As you can see AWR is frontline mission radio. 05:27 Our first priority is to travel where missionaries 05:30 cannot go. We broadcast thousands of hours 05:33 each day in seventy major languages of the world. 05:37 AWR has the capability and capacity of blanketing 05:40 almost 80 percent of the world's population. 05:43 Not only do we broadcast via shortwave radio, 05:47 but our signal is on over 1000 FM and AM 05:50 stations around the world as well. 05:52 Our podcast subscribers, Internet users, 05:55 satellite downlinks are growing rapidly, 05:58 evidenced by the hundred thousand plus e-mails. 06:01 letters and phone calls we receive 06:03 each and every year. 06:05 Yes, AWR is your mission radio. 06:08 No walls and no borders. For AWR that means 06:11 changed lives and changed hearts 06:13 around the world, because God is using 06:15 the airways of AWR to reach people everywhere. 06:23 Here is another story of hope from 06:26 Adventist World Radio. 06:27 My name is Benjamin Schoun, 06:29 president of Adventist World Radio. 06:32 We've been amazed by God's work in Afghanistan. 06:35 Recently a relief worker told me that many 06:37 Afghanis have great interest in 06:40 learning about Christ, but are afraid to 06:42 purchase Bibles, instead they listened 06:44 to Christian radio programs. 06:47 Adventist World Radio broadcast to Afghanistan 06:50 in the Dari, Uyghur, and Arabic languages, 06:53 allowing us to reach a large number of 06:55 the population, the response has been 06:58 incredible, just one example is a letter 07:01 we received from an orphaned teenage refugee 07:03 saying Jesus is now the hope 07:06 I came to in my sea of pain. 07:08 How can I be become a Christian? 07:12 Adventist World Radio shares the hope 07:15 of Christ with millions of people everyday, 07:18 for more information visit www.awr.org. 07:25 Sabina, how long have you listened to 07:27 our FM radio station? 07:29 I started listening last year. 07:32 Now I understand you didn't always not only 07:35 listen but your grandmother was a Muslim 07:39 and you've studied a little of her religion too. 07:44 Yes. We had a few moments to talk before 07:47 you sat down, you've told me something 07:49 about a particular program that really 07:52 attracted your attention. Would you tell me 07:54 what program that was? 07:58 There is a program that deals with the Muslim 08:00 culture and that's what originally captive me. 08:04 So it's one of our programs that is 08:06 explaining God to the Muslim population, 08:10 that's the one that attracted you? 08:13 I have been moved by the way the radio presenter 08:16 compared the Bible and the Quran 08:18 and how through the comparisons 08:20 the truth of God would be in it. 08:22 That began to touch your heart and how have 08:25 you changed then because of listening? 08:30 The radio programs have really influenced my life 08:33 to the extent that my entire 08:35 attitude has changed. Before I disliked to 08:38 reading the Bible but now because of the radio 08:40 programs I really enjoy studying the Bible. 08:44 I try my best every morning 08:46 to tune to morning star radio 08:48 so I can listen to the Bible study. 08:51 Sabina, I want to thank you so much for 08:54 coming today and sharing because many 08:56 people are going to hear your testimony. 08:58 Other people will understand that the 09:00 Holy Spirit's working in hearts and lives 09:02 around the world, changing people, 09:04 getting ready for his soon return. 09:08 Well, we're heading now to the harbor 09:10 here in Dar es Salaam. It's a huge harbor, 09:12 a lot of shipping industry, a lot of boats 09:14 coming from all over the world. 09:16 It used to be the capital but apparently 09:18 no longer is, they moved it, but I understand 09:21 that the politicians want to leave because 09:23 this is where the money is centered. 09:24 It's a beautiful harbor, beautiful area 09:27 but we're on our next adventure. 09:31 More recently the east coast of Africa 09:33 has been known for its pirates. 09:34 Off the coast of Somalia and Kenya pirates seize 09:37 cargo ships, holding the crew and cargo 09:39 for ransom but pirates in the 09:41 Indian Ocean are really nothing new. 10:12 Not only did pirates sail these water 10:14 300 years ago but they still do it today. 10:18 In the old days it used to spices and gold 10:20 and silver that caught their eye and attention. 10:23 But today it's black gold, it's the oil, it's cars, 10:26 its every other kind of treasure, 10:28 but what they're looking for today is just to take 10:30 control of the ship and then 10:32 get the ransom for it. 10:34 Right in these water just north of us. 10:40 William Captain Kidd born around 1645, 10:44 was a Scottish sailor remembered for his 10:46 trial and execution for piracy after returning 10:49 from a voyage to the Indian Ocean. 10:51 Some modern historians say his reputation 10:54 as a pirate is unjust. 10:56 They say that there is evidence that Kidd 10:58 acted only as a privateer. Privateers were often 11:01 regarded as pirates but were authorized by a 11:04 country's government to attack foreign 11:06 shipping during times of war. 11:10 Kidd's fame springs largely from the 11:12 sensational circumstances of his questioning before 11:14 the English Parliament and the ensuing trial. 11:18 His actual plundering on the high seas were both 11:20 less destructive and less lucrative than those of 11:23 many other contemporary pirates and privateers. 11:27 However, in March 1701, after a year in prison 11:31 at Newgate, England, a series of 11:33 Admiralty trials ensured, Captain Kidd refused 11:36 to turn State's evidence, his backers lost all 11:39 incriminating documents so he was hung for murder 11:42 and piracy on May 23rd. His body was tarred 11:45 and hung in a cage by the Thames River 11:48 where it remained for several years as a 11:50 warning to all others who would consider piracy. 11:57 You can sail the seven seas but no matter 12:00 where you go, you will find the airways of AWR. 12:03 I think of one lady 12:04 recently I was talking with, 12:05 who said she had sailed for years. 12:09 She had become a Christian 12:10 at one point in her life, but over time it had 12:13 dwindled and dwindled until she no longer had a 12:15 relationship with God. Then one night, 12:17 in the middle of the night about well, 12:19 actually it was about 4 O'clock in the morning 12:21 now watched on her sail boat that becomes 12:24 so nerve racking, so lonely, she turned on 12:27 the radio and all of a sudden she heard a 12:29 Christian program she listened, it was AWR 12:33 and she began thinking about Jesus Christ. 12:36 She again thought about I need to 12:38 become a Christian again. 12:40 When she got home she began attending a church, 12:42 and recommitted her life to God. 12:45 Out here, in the middle of the sea, 12:47 God found her through the airways of AWR. 12:52 I mean you actually work for AWR FM 12:56 here in the city, is that right? Yes. 12:59 How long have you work for the radio? 13:02 Seven months. And what's your position there? 13:07 I am working as a reporter. 13:09 I stood on the beach Sabbath and 13:11 watched you being baptized. 13:12 How did that happen from, you are already 13:15 working at the radio and then 13:17 you're baptized? Tell me that story? 13:20 I was doing my field work with morning star radio, 13:24 and by being there I was influenced by Christians. 13:27 I made up my mind to be a Christian. 13:30 Due to the radio program influenced 13:31 and also due to my work in the radio station 13:34 that belongs to Christians. 13:36 You, as you're doing the programs you look 13:38 at them and you start think this makes sense. 13:41 Is that what happened? 13:46 There are many things I did know but since 13:48 I came into close contact with 13:51 Adventists and no more. I believe I will continue 13:54 to grow in my knowledge of the word of God. 13:58 So, radio works in more ways than one, doesn't it? 14:02 Yes, the radio does a great job towards the Lord. 14:06 Do you tell others to listen 14:07 to the radio programs? 14:10 Yes, there was not that many people listening 14:13 to the radio programs, I were to leave but 14:15 since I began working with the radio station. 14:18 I have influenced many others in my building 14:21 to tune to morning star radio. 14:24 Would it be correct to say that you're the 14:26 happiest you've ever been in your life? 14:28 Yes. I am very happy now. Thanks brother. 14:37 Well, we almost arrived at the 14:39 exotic island of Zanzibar. 14:40 Well, the name itself conjures up mystic 14:43 and mystery. Well, let's go check it out. 14:46 Laying a few degrees south of the Equator, 14:49 Zanzibar is only 25 miles off the coast of 14:52 Tanzania, East Africa. A ferry ride away from 14:55 Dar es Salaam, this jewel is nestled in the exotic 14:58 turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. 15:00 It holds an almost legendary status among 15:03 travelers as an exotic island paradise 15:05 blessed with palm tree shores, timeless 15:08 fishing villages and lush spice plantations. 15:11 It has an identity all of its own. 15:14 It has been shaped by a turbulent history 15:16 which abounds with a colorful cast of 15:18 characters and from slave traders and 15:20 sultans to pirates and princesses. 15:24 Stone town is your arrival port to one of 15:26 Africa's most evocative locations with a 15:28 mesmerizing mix of influences 15:31 from the Indian subcontinent. 15:32 The Arabian Peninsula, the African mainland 15:35 and a dash of Europe, added for good measure. 15:38 The first recorded visit to this area was by a 15:41 a Greek merchant from Alexandria in 60 AD. 15:46 Now certainly a lot of things have changed 15:48 well let me tell you the place 15:49 is still very, very old. Oh they've added 15:52 wiring they've added different things but 15:54 architecture buildings seem ancient 15:56 according to the my standards anyway. 15:59 Minorates, graceful curve towers and 16:02 church steeples sore about some of the courtyards. 16:05 Picturous narrow streets are lying 16:06 with white wash building. 16:08 Many decorated with elegant wooden doors 16:10 beckoning the beholder to 16:12 discover their hidden secrets. 16:15 Well, it's apparent that you can get about 16:16 anything you want here in spices. 16:18 It smells good, it's wonderful. 16:20 I can't wait to get home 16:21 and try some of them myself. 16:23 The dark narrow passage ways of the 16:25 chaotic Darajani market assaults the senses, 16:28 everywhere you turn your nose is in hyper 16:31 drive experiencing the pungent vanilla 16:34 bean mixing with extraordinary spices all 16:37 collided with a powerful smell of fresh fish. 16:40 The humanize are dazzled by the clamor 16:42 of vendors parking their wares, 16:44 neatly arranged, brightly color piles of fruit 16:47 and vegetables and dozen of small shops selling 16:50 everything from plastic tubs to auto parts. 16:56 Are these ripe? Well let's see here. 17:04 There's a luscious fruit inside, 17:09 and at first it almost tastes like a grape. 17:11 There is a seed inside that you really don't 17:13 want to eat but the nectar is, it's bitter 17:17 and it's sweet at the same time or sour, 17:19 but it's, it's wonderful. You get addicted. 17:24 Negwako, please tell me a little bit 17:25 what you do in life, 17:27 what's your job is, those type of things? 17:34 I was born in an Adventist family, and I 17:37 grew up with a Christian background. 17:40 But when I finished my elementary education 17:42 I went to high school at a Non-Adventist 17:45 boarding school that's where I 17:47 learned many evil things. I started dancing, 17:51 I started drinking alcohol and when I was in form 17:54 three I got pregnant, and that stopped me 17:57 from continuing with my studies. 18:00 But I understand you do have a good job 18:04 and you work with people? 18:07 I give counseling services to teenagers, 18:10 to people who have HIV, and I give counseling to 18:13 people who are living in hard circumstances. 18:16 We've been traveling quite a bit in Dar es Salaam. 18:19 There's traffic everywhere. 18:21 Someone told me that if you live in Dar that 18:24 basically you spend a lot of your life in the car. 18:27 I'm wondering do you listen 18:28 to the radio programs in your car. 18:32 I listen to the radio on my walkman while 18:35 I walk to work. Wherever I go, I am listening to 18:39 it as much as I can, and it has been a real 18:42 big source of comfort for me because when I got 18:46 pregnant my parents were very unhappy. 18:49 They would segregate from my family. 18:52 Even more my boyfriend deserted me 18:55 and I was left alone to raise my baby. 18:58 I was scared and I even thought 19:00 about committing suicide. But that's when the 19:03 radio became a great source of comfort for me. 19:07 Are you saying that basically because of the 19:10 radio, you didn't think about suicide any longer, 19:14 and the message you heard from the radio? 19:18 The AWR morning star radio programs have been 19:23 a great source of comfort to me. 19:25 When I heard the Christian songs and 19:27 spiritual talks, the idea of committing suicide 19:30 faded away. I realized that I don't need to die. 19:35 I just need to go to God and ask him to forgive me 19:38 for my sins, and also to prepare 19:40 myself to raise my child. 19:43 So your whole life has changed now? 19:46 These radio programs have moved me to 19:50 even share my faith with other people and 19:52 some of my friends who were shared with 19:55 have surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ. 19:58 For instance, I had a friend from Denmark 20:00 whom I witnessed to. Because of the radio 20:03 programs she has decided to give her 20:05 life to Jesus Christ. 20:07 There may be someone today watching 20:11 this right now who's given up, 20:13 who is ready to give up, who maybe ready 20:16 to commit suicide too what would 20:17 you tell those people? 20:21 I would encourage them not to give up their life. 20:24 Don't put your trust in man, 20:26 put your trust in God and you have to listen 20:28 to this radio programs for support because 20:31 you get Christian music, spiritual studies, 20:34 and you will enriched in your spiritual life 20:37 through Jesus Christ you will find illusion of life. 20:41 That's good counsel. Thank you so much. 20:44 We look forward to seeing you in heaven, 20:46 and I know you are going to have other 20:48 people with you that you brought along too. 20:51 Amen. Thank you. Yet, there it was from a station 22:12 called Adventist World Radio. 22:14 Berhanu was so happy with his new discovery 22:18 that he traveled to Addis Ababa 22:19 to see the station for himself. 22:22 After arriving Berhanu had not a clue where to 22:26 find Adventist World Radio in the massive city. 22:30 Miraculously though, a stranger offered to 22:33 guide Berhanu to the station. 22:35 He couldn't believe his eyes. 22:37 Berhanu kept asking, is this really the station? 22:41 Are you really the people who speak about Christ. 22:46 Adventist World Radio shares the hope of Christ 22:49 with millions of people every day, 22:52 for more information visit www.awr.org. 23:02 Foreign Language song Amen. Yes. 25:19 What was your life like before this time? 25:23 I used to live an evil life, 25:25 I smoke cigarette and drank alcohol, 25:28 and I even used marijuana. 25:30 Were you always a Christian or you 25:33 had Christian background? 25:35 No, I have never been a Christian. I was a Muslim. 25:41 Really, but then you heard the radio 25:45 and what happened? 25:47 When I heard the radio program one day 25:50 evangelistic call talks, I was moved continue 25:53 hearing and responding to the message. 25:56 If you hadn't listened to the AWR radio, 25:58 what do you think would happen to your life? 26:03 If I didn't have the chance to listen to 26:04 this Christian radio broadcasting. 26:06 My life would have gotten worse and worse. 26:10 I know personally because years ago 26:12 I used to smoke marijuana. Well, that's a drug 26:15 that you continually want it, 26:18 how did you quit? You just quit. 26:22 Formally I tried to stop but I couldn't do it. 26:25 But this time God gave me power and I 26:27 stopped smoking marijuana. 26:29 It is absolutely the power of God. 26:31 No doubt about it. That is true. 26:34 It is the power of God. Well, you've made a 26:37 good decision just in time brother. 26:40 It's so good to see you baptized today. 26:43 This is the beginning of a 26:44 wonderful life in the Lord. 26:49 In the book of Matthew chapter 11, 26:51 Jesus says, Come to Me, all of you who labor 26:55 and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 26:59 That's the answer that comes through listening 27:01 to the radio programs and these people heard that 27:05 answer as they listened to radio and they 27:08 found hope, no longer did one want to 27:11 commit suicide, the lady's child was healed, 27:15 a person learned about God 27:17 and all that he has to offer for the future. 27:20 That's what we're all about.
