00:01 The Ancient story of Daniel in the Lion's Den,
00:03 Kenya's Tsavo National park and
00:06 the Man-Eaters lions and a long haul truck driver.
00:09 What do they have all in common,
00:10 don't miss this episode.
01:00 The Majestic Lion, king of the beasts,
01:03 strong and fearsome, these are some of the
01:06 words that come to mind when you think of the
01:08 mighty lion wildlife in Africa.
01:10 One African story of lions is that of the
01:12 Tsavo Man-Eaters, in the late 19th Century
01:16 British Engineer Lieutenant Colonel
01:19 John Henry Patterson, was in-charge of constructing
01:22 a Railway Bridge over the Tsavo river,
01:24 during construction lions began attacking
01:27 the workers, even dragging the men out
01:30 of their tents at night. The exact number of
01:33 people killed by the lions is unclear,
01:35 over the course of his life Patterson gave several
01:38 different figures, once claiming that there was
01:41 as many as 135 victims, recent research indicates
01:45 that the number was probably closer to 35 workers,
01:48 but the bottom line is that's a lot of people.
01:54 So you gather medicinal herbs and barks and plants
01:57 to treat people? Yeah, I do.
02:00 Where, is there any around here you see Reuben,
02:02 that we could use? Yeah, we can use this one here.
02:05 And what is this one? This one is a Sodom Apple,
02:09 I'm sorry, it's what? It is a Sodom Apple,
02:13 yeah great, ah! We remember history of Sodom
02:18 when Sodom was burned, the first plant species
02:22 to grow there was Sodom Apple, really? Yeah,
02:25 and what do you do with this? Ah!
02:27 A Sodom Apple, it is a plant you can use the leaves,
02:32 with the leaves you can use to heal some wounds.
02:38 We dry these leaves under shed and then
02:42 we crush them, after crushing them into
02:44 small pieces, we just apply on top of wounds,
02:47 they'll suck all the, fresh wounds, yeah
02:50 fresh wounds, yeah they'll suck all fluids
02:54 and then it will dry up, then a period of one
02:57 week that wound will be healed.
03:00 How long have you been doing this type
03:02 of treatment? I've been doing this for a period
03:05 of six years right now. And out here,
03:08 you know in the plains and in the jungles,
03:11 how many different types of things do you use,
03:13 plants and barks and. Ah! We use different
03:18 kind of plant species, we use leaves,
03:25 we use the bark of the trees and the roots
03:29 and even grass. I want to know more,
03:33 is there anything else you see around here
03:34 that maybe we can find some place,
03:41 I see one plant here. What do you do with that one?
03:44 Ah! This one oh, it's got stickers,
03:46 we use the leaves, we can use the leaves to
03:52 cure Malaria, we crush it and then we boil it
03:56 in water and then you take that, you drink it,
04:00 you' drink it. How many times?
04:02 Three glasses in a day before meals that
04:06 would be appropriate and we'll take it
04:08 for only four days. We can't forget about this
04:11 small one here, when it is dry, it is very hard
04:15 to uproot we use this one to treat people
04:19 who we can say becoming martyr. Okay.
04:24 It's a bit bitter but it's good. You know what's
04:28 interesting to me Reuben is Scientists have
04:31 discovered many years ago that most of our
04:34 Pharmaceutical products come from the jungles
04:36 and come from other places and they continually
04:39 look to folks like you and those that have done
04:41 medicine for you know a little more,
04:44 not saying primitive, but a little more rural
04:46 areas over the years and it's worked and
04:48 they're finding the fantastic medicine,
04:50 But you haven't always done medicine have you,
04:54 there's been other things in
04:56 your life hasn't there yeah.

06:01 Here's another story of hope from
06:04 Adventist World Radio. Igor and Svetlana,
06:07 unlike some other Russians have seen
06:10 nothing but hard times since the fall of Communism.
06:13 The Agriculture Industry so vital to their rural
06:16 town has plummeted leaving the area in poverty,
06:20 watching their dejected neighbors fall to alcohol
06:24 abuse they were concerned about the influence
06:26 such a hopeless society would have on their
06:28 five children. So they searched for a positive
06:32 influence for their family they found it in
06:35 Adventist World Radio, you are the Brightest
06:38 Light in our hard life, they wrote to us,
06:40 we're always looking forward to your next program
06:43 Thank you for your message of kindness and hope.

07:06 In the 19th Century it was estimated that more
07:08 than 200 Tanzanians were killed each year
07:12 by lions, crocodiles, elephants, hippos and
07:15 snakes, and that the actual number could be
07:17 double that amount, with lions thought to
07:20 have account for at least 70 of those deaths,
07:24 the lion is one of the big four cats in the feline
07:27 family with some males exceeding 550 pounds
07:30 in weight, lions are unusually social compared
07:34 to other cats. A pride of lions consists of
07:37 related females and offspring and a small
07:39 number of adult males, visually the male lion
07:44 is highly distinctive and it's easily recognized
07:47 by its mane, the ruler thumb is the darker
07:49 and fuller the mane, the healthier the lion.
07:52 They spend much of their time resting and
07:55 are inactive for about 20 hours per day,
07:57 intermittent burst of activity follow through
08:00 the night hours until dawn,
08:02 when hunting most often takes place.
08:09 Groups of female lions typically hunt together,
08:12 preying mostly on large grazing animals such
08:15 as wildebeest, lions are opportunistic hunters
08:18 and after a careful stock will take the
08:21 closet animal regardless of it's age,
08:23 sex or condition. If suitable prey is available
08:27 lions eat every three to four days but can
08:30 go without food for more than a week.
08:33 An adult lion will kill about 15 animals per year,
08:36 most hunting takes places under the poor
08:39 light conditions of early evening or dawn
08:41 and during the night, they have little stamina
08:44 and will usually get up close to the prey
08:47 before charging. Lions do not always hunt
08:50 in a group and single lions account for about
08:53 50 percent of all kills, Lions are extremely
08:56 powerful, by using only a grip on its rump,
08:59 they can grab and throw down a fully
09:01 grown Zebra. The Bible says that the devil is
09:05 like a roaring lion stocking everyone he can,
09:08 looking for those who are not covered by
09:11 God's protection. Reuben realized that
09:13 he was no match for the devil and cried out
09:16 to God just in the nick of time, others have cried
09:20 out to God when facing lions, God sent his
09:22 angel to shut the mouth of the lions for his
09:25 friend Daniel and he gave strength to David to
09:27 slain a lion that was threatening his flock,
09:30 only God is powerful enough to protect us.
09:33 Reuben found that out first hand.
09:36 You were raised as a Christian weren't you?
09:40 Yeah, I was raised as a Christian but when
09:42 I became a truck driver, I decided
09:46 to leave the Christianity way and,
09:50 so you just totally went away from God,
09:53 yeah I just went away from God because you know,
09:56 if you walk with bad people always you'll
10:00 just be drawn to what they're doing also there
10:05 was traumatic experience that came into your
10:07 life though, would you share that with me.
10:09 Yeah! One day as we were coming from Mumias,
10:16 we were cutting sugar and we are going to
10:21 Mombasa, we had a break down at
10:27 Tsavo National Park and when we have that
10:31 break down, now if I, Tsavo, that's where
10:34 the Man-eating lions, that's where the animals
10:37 it's a game pack. When we had the mechanical
10:41 problem, we have our radios where we can
10:44 communicate with our bosses in Mombasa,
10:48 we tried out best we communicated with them
10:51 so that. If I can interrupt you said we,
10:54 so you had a partner, yeah I had a partner,
10:57 when you're tired another person was
10:59 can drive so when we have that problem
11:03 we communicate with our bosses in Mombasa
11:07 and he promised to bring us, to give us some
11:11 security policemen to at least help us,
11:14 because we had sugar, and sugar is very
11:17 expensive so we just needed security to assist us
11:20 and maybe they could send mechanics to come
11:24 and repair the vehicle. What was the security for?
11:27 For wild animals or bandits or both? No,
11:30 the security was suppose to be for the bandits
11:34 and also the wild animals. So you got multiple
11:37 things to be afraid of, bandits and wild animals,
11:40 lions or, lions and bad bandits, because we had
11:43 sugar and that sugar is expensive,
11:45 if it is stolen I will have ended in jail,
11:49 you would have ended up in jail, yeah.
11:51 How will my employer agree that it was stolen?
11:57 I got you, they may not believe that,
11:59 you could have thought it was a set up, yeah,
12:02 so you're out there broken down, yeah after
12:05 the truck was broken down and we could not
12:08 move any further we communicated with our
12:11 bosses in Mombasa, but they said that the security
12:16 are on the way coming, but we didn't see it.
12:23 Now, you mentioned to me today about the
12:25 cheetahs and their eating habits, ah! Cheetahs,
12:29 are very, very selective to food, they have to
12:34 look for only healthier animals.
12:37 So that's it, healthy only, if they see
12:39 something sick, they won't touch it or.
12:42 They never get close to the sicker animals,
12:45 this is because of genetic study shows
12:49 that all the cheetahs are very closely blood
12:54 related, so probably according to genetics,
13:00 they are very weaker to diseases,
13:03 all of them came off Noah's ark.
13:09 The cheetah is atypical member of
13:10 the Cat family that is unique in its speed,
13:13 it is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds
13:16 between 70 and 75 miles per hour in short
13:20 bursts covering distances up to 1500 feet
13:23 and has the ability to accelerate from zero to
13:26 68 miles an hour in three seconds, faster than
13:31 most super cars. The cheetah is a carnivore,
13:36 eating mostly mammals under 90 pounds,
13:38 including the Thomson gazelle, the impala,
13:41 and the young of larger mammals such as
13:43 wildebeests and zebras are also taken at times,
13:46 it hunts either early in the morning
13:49 or later in the evening when it is not so hot,
13:52 but there is still enough light, prey a stock to
13:58 within 30 to 100 feet and then chased,
14:01 this is usually over in less than a minute
14:04 and if a cheetah fails to make a catch quickly,
14:06 it will give up. When sprinting,
14:09 the cheetah's temperature becomes so high
14:12 it would be deadly to continue, this is why
14:14 they're often seen resting after it is caught
14:16 it's prey. Our guide received a call from
14:21 a fellow guide saying he found a cheetah,
14:23 so we're heading to see if we can find it.
14:32 There, about a 100 yards out, looks like
14:35 a female she's stalking a wildebeests,
14:37 considering the height of the grass
14:38 she's about 28 inches tall at the shoulder,
14:41 I'm surprised the herd is not spooked at all,
14:44 there she goes, wow look at the speed,
14:46 look at the speed. She's got him,
14:50 she's got him, look at that, she's about
14:53 120 pounds, that calf is throwing around
14:55 like she weighs nothing, wow this is quick
15:01 What's this? Look Whoa! Did you see that,
15:11 that Cat doesn't know what hit her,
15:16 it's sure good to know there won't
15:17 be any need for hunting like that in Heaven.
15:21 So for my understanding it was a dry shaft
15:23 and a new joint that went out of the truck yeah,
15:25 you're not going anywhere, I could not go.
15:29 How far away, how far away is the company?
15:31 From Mombasa? Well whoever's got to come
15:36 rescue you now. We just needed the security
15:39 because it was far from Mombasa,
15:41 it's almost 20 kilometers I think from Mombasa,
15:45 but when it reach, around 7 we had a radio after
15:55 the news, there used to be a program,
15:59 there is a preacher who always preach
16:03 in the radios and that caught your attention,
16:07 yeah it caught my attention for some time,
16:10 although I was also smoking, so I didn't
16:13 put my attention to what he was speaking.
16:17 So after he had preached and he made his call,
16:22 I didn't give up my life to Jesus, I just stayed
16:28 where I was, I didn't want to turn back to God
16:33 and repent, but later at around 7:20,
16:39 it was now almost dark, we saw some antelopes
16:46 passing by as if they're grazing in a flock of
16:50 antelopes but the speed at which they were
16:54 moving at, it was a bit on a high speed as
16:58 if there is an enemy, faster than grazing yeah,
17:01 it was faster than grazing, is an enemy behind them.
17:04 They burst out close the roads,
17:10 after I saw a lion, I never seen a lion before.
17:15 In all your life, I never saw, that was my first
17:20 time to sit closer to me, it saw the truck
17:24 it came and stood in front of the truck,
17:29 came around the truck and I could remember
17:36 one of windows could not reach where
17:41 it's supposed to reach, it was stuck,
17:43 you couldn't roll it up all the way,
17:45 the animal came and stood, looked up in
17:49 the window, yeah looked up at the window,
17:51 it went down I was, now this was a male
17:55 or a female, it was a male, big male,
17:57 it's a big male with hair, so it fill the
18:01 whole window, that's when I started remembering
18:05 about a call, the preacher who made,
18:09 the preacher made for us to surrender our lives.
18:13 So you were very scared at that moment,
18:15 I was scared, my body was full of sweat,
18:20 I was very frightened, now what's your
18:25 partner doing? I tried to advice him,
18:28 because we used to be given some lectures
18:32 and they used to, they gave us some rare
18:37 reflective coats, well that's what this is for.
18:40 And I told my colleague to put this on
18:45 because some lion, these wild animals
18:51 at night they don't like this red colors,
18:54 so I told my friend to put it on but he said
18:58 what will a coat do if you're going die then
19:05 all of us we're going to die. So he denied,
19:09 but you put yours on, yes I took mine
19:11 and just put it on like that
19:14 and that's the way it was.

20:22 Here's another story of hope
20:24 from Adventist World Radio.
20:26 In the summer of 2003, 50 volunteers set out
20:30 on bicycles across the Karnataka,
20:32 Goa region of India. Their mission was
20:35 to invite town's people from around the region
20:37 to one of fifty different locations where they
20:40 could listen to Adventist World Radio.
20:43 Many people in the Karnataka,
20:44 Goa region do not own radios and those that
20:48 do often have never heard of
20:50 Adventist World Radio. The goal of the project
20:53 was to established listener clubs that would meet
20:55 regularly to listen to the programs,
20:57 hopefully leading the people to Christ.
21:00 To date over 2500 people have been
21:04 baptized through the listeners clubs.
21:09 Adventist World Radio, shares the hope of Christ
21:13 with millions of people everyday in their own
21:16 languages, for more information visit AWR.ORG.
21:26 Let me show you how it was. See the lion
21:31 came from this side and then first came
21:35 it left the antelopes, where it saw that the
21:41 truck it became interested to see what was in the
21:47 truck, and so we were inside the truck,
21:51 I and my colleague. So it came and stood here,
21:55 stand at us look at us, it was not satisfied,
22:00 it was came to this side that's when I remembered
22:09 that we had these red jackets and I told
22:13 my colleague now it's time we should put
22:15 on our red jackets because we really
22:18 need it now, my colleague said no,
22:22 what's you need, the red jacket cannot help me,
22:27 we're gonna to be eaten. So I said okay
22:31 but let me just put on mine, so I took mine
22:35 and worn it after a short while the lion
22:40 came back and stood again, stare at us
22:45 and looked at my colleague. So he didn't
22:48 look at you, he looked at your colleague.
22:49 And he looked at my colleague and then
22:51 just came down, took some steps behind as
22:56 if it was preparing to come over, it came
23:02 and then broke the window and got my
23:05 colleague and pulled him outside.
23:09 So he yanks him out of the truck yeah
23:11 just brings him out, put him down here,
23:15 my friend was screaming but that's the way
23:19 he passed away. After some time it took
23:25 some steps back again that's when
23:29 I remembered how to pray after a long time,
23:32 I had forgot how to pray that when I asked
23:37 God to forgive me 'cause I was a sinner
23:40 and if he could grant me a second chance,
23:45 I could change my life that way.
23:47 And what next, the lion just came back,
23:50 and now looked at me, it just stood there
23:55 for some time and took back some steps
23:58 behind it come running again grabbed the
24:03 dash board and went up on top of the vehicle.
24:07 So if I understand this correctly he actually
24:09 had to use his paws perhaps to set his paw
24:12 inside the dash of your vehicle to jump on up,
24:15 yeah it grabbed the dash board and then
24:18 it went up and that is where it stayed until
24:24 morning, sat there all night then, yeah it's
24:31 even hard for you to think about it now,
24:33 you know some time when I think about
24:36 I always shed tears because it was terrible.
24:42 What was going through your mind that night?
24:44 Sitting in that truck all night along waiting
24:46 for rescue, I couldn't do anything I guess
24:49 I had to stay there and wait to see what ever,
24:52 what was going to happen in the morning the
24:57 game came and they shot on the air these animals
25:04 ran way, that's when that women came out
25:07 of his vehicle, it came straight to where I was
25:11 and asked me whether I was a Christian,
25:15 really? That's what she told me, are you a
25:19 Christian, so that lady knew that the only way
25:22 you could have survived this whole situation is
25:24 if God had protected you that night yeah,
25:26 so the God used a Radio to touch your heart
25:30 and then used a lady you had no idea who she was,
25:33 to lead you on the pathways or nudge
25:36 you on the pathway, that's what happened.
25:39 You must thank him everyday, yeah,
25:41 I do thank him everyday, every moment for
25:46 what he did for me, you know the bottom line
25:51 is you are happier now then you were then
25:54 before you were a Christian. I am very
25:57 happy right now, because if I would have continued
26:00 that life maybe I would have died,
26:03 because you told me, you told me that you said
26:06 I was having a good life, I was having a happy life,
26:08 I didn't want anything of Christianity but
26:11 now that you had both sides. Where is the best
26:13 place to be? To be a Christian is best.
26:17 You know Reuben, I know this was hard
26:19 for you today brother, to share this story tonight,
26:21 I sure appreciate it. Thank You,
26:24 thank you very much.
26:32 The Eternal Feature of Every Living Human
26:35 Being depends on their relationship with
26:38 Jesus Christ, Reuben was living the good life,
26:41 he thought he had everything that he wanted
26:44 but he not accepted Jesus Christ and
26:48 the blood of the cross to cover his sin.
26:51 Friend, if you know that your relationship with
26:55 God is not all that it should be, perhaps you need
26:59 to give your life to Jesus Christ as well,
27:02 perhaps Reuben's story has touched your heart
27:07 and you may not have had as a dramatic
27:10 experience as Reuben, but yet you need,
27:14 you feel the call of God in your life.
27:17 Please ask for forgiveness right now,
27:19 please pray a prayer to Jesus, telling him that
27:23 you want to follow all the principles
27:25 that he gives in his Holy Scriptures.
