00:01 It's is hot, it's dry, it's dusty,
00:03 it's barren, very little shade.
00:06 I don't know where they find any water
00:07 in this place. But some how these nomads
00:10 survive in land that's so inhospitable.
00:14 Wonderful camel herd, I've never seen
00:15 so many camels in any place on earth
00:17 in my life at one time. And they're very
00:20 nice people even though some of them are
00:22 carrying weapons over their shoulder,
00:25 they're nice people. You find good
00:27 people every where on earth.
01:06 Anthropologists called Ethiopia the
01:08 cradle of civilization. The discovery of a
01:11 skeleton later named Lucy is said to
01:14 be the missing link and was found in the
01:16 far region of the Ethiopian. Some studies
01:19 claim that the dispersion of human beings
01:21 can be traced back to this region.
01:24 However, according to Genesis 1:1,
01:26 we find that God created all the things.
01:29 In the beginning God created the heavens
01:31 and the earth. So we conclude that the
01:33 Lucy account does not fit the Biblical
01:35 record of creation. As we head east the
01:44 terrain begins to change from hilly green
01:46 woods and pasture lands to a volcanic
01:48 wasteland. Even in this volcanic hoarseness
01:56 just look at the beauty that God has
01:58 created to remind us of him. Hope you can
02:03 see these colors. The land is dry and arid.
02:16 There may be rains that come at certain
02:18 times of the year to water the animals
02:21 and supply a little bit of nutrients for humans.
02:25 But most of the time it's just dry,
02:27 it's barren, and there's just no water to be
02:31 found, how do they do it. I don't know it
02:35 seems like God gives every human
02:36 being the ability to somehow survive.
02:57 Much of the area surrounding the well
02:59 of Biblical Samaria was barren desert and
03:02 bone dry. A woman had come out of
03:05 the city to draw the precious water
03:07 of life and Jesus was there waiting for her.
03:10 He was thinking of much more than the
03:12 water that would sustain physical life.
03:15 He revealed to her that whoever drinks
03:17 of this water shall thirst again.
03:19 But whoever drinks of the water that
03:21 I shall give him shall never thirst.
03:24 But the water that I shall give him shall
03:26 be in him a well of water to spring it up.
03:29 He was speaking of water that represented
03:30 the Holy Spirit. The presence of God that
03:33 would make the desert of the human heart
03:35 spring up and blossom to eternal life.
03:39 Today you will visit barren deserts and
03:40 the people who live there. You will
03:42 meet those who have heard the voice
03:44 of Jesus and have allowed the true water
03:46 of life to change them forever.
03:51 We traveled a long way today to get here
03:53 to Ambo, Ethiopia. It's my understanding a
03:56 lot of people have come from many areas to
03:58 meet with us today. So let's go
04:00 on inside and see who's here.
04:06 Foreign language
04:31 What language group is this of the people
04:32 we're going to meet today.
04:33 Oromo language. Oromo, Oromo.
04:37 How many people are in that language group?
04:39 More than 37 million, 37 million, yeah.
04:43 Thirty seven million people in a language
04:46 group. And Adventist Radio is reaching out
04:49 to them? This is an incredible story today,
04:51 because we have many people from many
04:52 places I understand. As a matter of fact
04:55 here many of them here today,
04:57 Akam Bultan, did I get right? Yeah,
05:01 you're right. I got it right and nobody said.
05:04 I tried so hard to get it right. They were not
05:07 expecting that. They weren't expecting that.
05:10 Well let me try, Akam Bultan.
05:13 Okay that's better. It's good to see
05:17 all of you today. How many of you are
05:20 here because of Adventist World Radio.
05:23 You found the love of Jesus Christ through
05:25 Adventist World Radio, I want you to raise
05:26 your hands. Alright, it's alright.
05:31 Is everybody here today from
05:33 the same church group?
05:34 Foreign language
05:38 No, they're not from the same church.
05:40 And so is anybody from here locally?
05:43 Foreign language
05:47 No one. Okay, so they've all come from
05:49 distances to meet us today, right.
05:52 How many churches can we somehow
05:54 split them up into church groups.
05:56 Foreign language
06:01 Let's maybe start with this group here.
06:03 Who, is there a spokesman or is there
06:05 someone that you started out listening
06:07 to AWR and then you shared with everybody else.
06:11 A friend of mine told me about Adventist
06:14 World Radio and after that I began to
06:16 listen to the AWR program. I recognized
06:20 truth in what Adventist World Radio was
06:22 teaching and preaching. After that I shared
06:25 the radio's message with my friends.
06:28 So you started listening because of him to AWR.
06:32 Foreign language
06:35 I was in front listening to AWR before
06:38 he told about it. He encouraged me to
06:40 join the church. But there was no church,
06:43 so we made a phone call to AWR station
06:45 in Addis Ababa, and from there we formed
06:48 many other group of people who were
06:49 Adventist and listening to AWR.
06:52 I think God brought all of us listen
06:54 here together to be a church body.
06:58 So you're continually sharing AWR with
07:00 other people. Yeah, yes we're sharing
07:02 with other people. Are you happy that
07:04 you've been listening to AWR?
07:06 Does it make a change in your lives.
07:10 Alright fellows, thank you so much.
07:12 Let's go into another group here and see
07:13 their story but don't go away. I may
07:15 want to talk to you some more, okay.
07:19 As you can see AWR is frontline mission
07:22 radio. Our first priority is to travel where
07:25 missionaries cannot go. We broadcast
07:28 thousands of hours each day in seventy
07:30 major languages of the world. AWR has
07:34 the capability and capacity of blanketing
07:36 almost eighty percent of the world's
07:37 population. Not only do we broadcast via
07:41 shortwave radio, but our signal is on over
07:43 1000 FM and AM stations around the
07:47 world as well. Our podcast subscribers,
07:50 Internet users, satellite downlinks are
07:52 growing rapidly, evidenced by the hundred
07:55 thousand plus e-mails, letters and phone
07:58 calls we receive each and every year.
08:01 Yes, AWR is your mission radio.
08:04 No walls and no borders. For AWR that
08:06 means changed lives and changed hearts
08:08 around the world, because God is using the
08:11 airways of AWR to reach people everywhere.
08:19 Here's another story of hope from
08:21 Adventist World Radio. My name is
08:23 Benjamin Schoun, I'm the President of
08:25 Adventist World Radio. Let me tell you
08:27 about our work in North Korea, a nation
08:30 governed by a powerfully repressive
08:33 communist regime, where any form
08:34 of evangelism is strictly forbidden.
08:37 Adventist World Radio makes daily
08:39 shortwave broadcast to North Korea
08:41 spreading the Hope of Christ to a nation
08:43 utterly devoid of Christianity.
08:46 It's extremely rare that we make any
08:48 contact with listeners in North Korea.
08:51 However through communication with North
08:53 Korean refugees we're encouraged to know
08:56 that people are listening to our programs.
08:59 We pray that our listeners in North Korea
09:01 will receive God's word and find salvation in Christ.
09:07 Adventist World Radio shares the hope of
09:10 Christ with millions of people everyday.
09:14 For more information visit awr.org.
09:34 Now, we're in the some of most inhospitable
09:36 country in the world. Volcanic, barren,
09:39 no water, almost no shade, but these animals
09:43 survive and thrive. I don't
09:45 know exactly how about they do.
09:50 From ancient Biblical times camels have
09:52 been recognized as very important to
09:54 many cultures. This animal has been called
09:57 the ship of the desert. Most animals
10:00 store fat in their bodies, but only camels
10:03 keep most of their fat in a hump.
10:05 If food is hard to find, the fat in the hump
10:08 provides energy for the animal. The hump
10:10 is not a storage place for water as many
10:12 people believe. The camel's thick coat
10:15 reflects sunlight, and also insulates it
10:18 from the intense heat radiated from
10:19 desert sand. Their long legs help by
10:23 keeping them further from the hot ground.
10:26 Their mouth is very sturdy, has 38 teeth
10:29 and able to chew thorny desert plants.
10:32 Camels eating green herbage can capture
10:34 enough moisture in milder conditions to
10:36 maintain their bodies' hydrated state
10:38 without the need for drinking. Long eyelashes
10:42 and heavy ear hair, together with
10:44 sealable nostrils form a barrier against sand.
10:48 They're able to withstand changes in
10:50 body temperature and water content that
10:52 would kill most other animals. Their body
10:55 temperature ranges from 93 degrees
10:57 Fahrenheit at night to 106 degrees
10:59 Fahrenheit during the day, and only above
11:02 this threshold will they begin to sweat.
11:06 Evaporation of their sweat takes place at
11:08 skin level, not at the surface of their
11:10 coat, thereby being efficient at cooling
11:12 the body compared to the amount of
11:14 water lost during sweating. This ability to
11:18 fluctuate body temperature and the
11:20 efficiency of their sweating allows them
11:22 to preserve about five liters of water a day.
11:26 God really knew what he was doing when
11:27 he created the camel. I want you ask you,
11:30 is that toothbrush? Your stick, yeah,
11:37 where do you find that? A bush, the stick,
11:42 yeah. You find that on a bush. Yeah,
11:46 I know, no translator. I'm lost, thank you.
11:54 There are an estimated 30 to 40 million
11:56 nomads in the world. Nomads are
11:59 hunter-gatherers and have by far the
12:01 longest lived method of survival in
12:03 human history following seasonally available
12:06 wild plants and game. They're continually
12:09 on the move with their herds looking for
12:10 pasture. You see they're searching for
12:13 a better life. They desire peace,
12:16 seek after happiness, and they want
12:18 answers to questions about life after death.
12:22 It's exciting to be a part of God's great
12:23 work that is truly changing the hearts
12:26 and lives of these desert dwellers.
12:31 That is some knife, got a loft at the base.
12:48 So yours is brown, it looks like you've
12:50 had yours for a long time, that's it,
12:53 and kind of bitter. When he got this off
12:57 the bush, mine is green, his is brown.
13:00 How long has he had his piece to brush his teeth.
13:03 Foreign language
13:09 For three days, three days, okay but
13:12 that of different kind. Is that one
13:13 better than this one. This one is the
13:15 best. This is one is best. What does he
13:17 call it. We call it badeno, badeno, okay.
13:23 Thank you very much, I appreciate it,
13:25 thank you. It's interesting; the people
13:28 here are very friendly, very nice,
13:31 willing to help you out. Apparently, this
13:34 is the greatest little bush to brush your
13:35 teeth. I understand some of these
13:37 even have various things that help your
13:41 teeth other than just brushing.
13:45 Now this is another, another representing
13:48 another church group here. Yes, we're
13:50 representing another group. And what's the
13:53 story of this group. Tell me how did you end
13:55 up coming here today. How did you end up
13:58 with your relationship with God through
14:00 AWR because you raised hands
14:02 that you listened to AWR?
14:04 Foreign language
14:05 Before I was a Christian I was under the
14:08 control of the devil, I worship him and because
14:11 of that I had so many problems. I lost all of
14:14 my property and livestock, worst of all my
14:17 family died. Thankfully I found a
14:20 brother from a Christian church.
14:22 If I can before he goes on. I wanna hear
14:24 just a little more on that, worshiping
14:27 the devil. How did he worship the devil?
14:29 Foreign language
14:31 I used to go to the fortuneteller,
14:33 so he could predict my future.
14:35 I lost everything because I followed
14:37 the fortuneteller's orders.
14:39 So he ended up losing all of his properties
14:41 and everything because he followed the
14:43 fortuneteller. The fortuneteller asked me
14:46 to sacrifice my cattle and sheep and
14:49 eventually I had no more cattle left to sacrifice.
14:53 Only my children and me are left alive.
14:56 So I decided to protest the devil and I
14:58 refused to follow him any more. I began to go
15:02 to church and eventually heard about AWR
15:06 and then I began to listen to it and read the Bible.
15:09 So he found a change in his heart.
15:10 God began speaking to him through the radio.
15:13 Now he must have shared with someone
15:14 else because he's representing a whole church.
15:18 I shared the message to other
15:20 people and now about 30 people.
15:23 So Jesus Christ spoke to you through the
15:25 airways of AWR and you're happy because
15:27 of that today. We are very happy with AWR.
15:31 Alright, thank you fellows. In the 1890s a man
15:37 had a dream to build a rail road, a rail road
15:40 all the way from the highlands of Ethiopia to
15:42 French Somali land. But he had a few
15:45 problems, one of those problems.
15:48 It's through the most inhospitable territory in
15:50 all of Ethiopia, and then another one the
15:53 Afar people. The Afar people are quite a
15:57 tribal people that even file their teeth.
15:58 I understand or did at that time,
16:01 a vicious people who didn't want this iron
16:03 monster going their land at all.
16:06 They raid, they pillaged, they plundered,
16:08 they killed the workers. But finally 800
16:12 kilometers and 20 years later the rail
16:15 road was completed. But today it lies in
16:19 complete disuse. The Afar people are one
16:25 of nine recognized ethnic divisions of Ethiopia,
16:29 inhabiting Djibouti in North Eastern Ethiopia.
16:33 The Afar language is based impart from the
16:35 ancient Cush people as mentioned in the
16:37 Old Testament book of Genesis in numbers.
16:40 Cush was the grandson of Noah and the son
16:42 of Ham. He settled in Africa in the area
16:45 of modern day Ethiopia. The Karayu people
16:50 are cousins to the Afar living in the same
16:52 region. But in the times of drought family
16:55 relations mean little as the two tribes are
16:57 known to fight over water. Where's
17:01 our translator, what's the brand.
17:03 Foreign language
17:07 We call it Farley, Farley okay.
17:08 Does he know what the bullet size
17:10 is 9mm. No, they're bigger than that.
17:14 Foreign language
17:16 What's he carrying for.
17:18 Foreign language
17:20 Just for the protection of animals and for
17:23 themselves. Is he a good shot
17:25 Foreign language
17:29 He doesn't want to brag now.
17:33 Well guns and radios no mater where
17:35 we are AWR is reaching out there.
17:41 You fellows, you're one group.
17:45 Yeah, we are one group.
17:48 How far away did you travel today?
17:51 We came from around 145 kilometers away,
17:54 six hours on foot and three hours by car.
17:58 So nine and half hours of travel most of that
18:00 on foot. Share that story with me,
18:03 what happened? How come you're here
18:05 today, how come you're Christians today?
18:07 Foreign language
18:09 We had listened to AWR to several times.
18:12 But we didn't know where the church was.
18:14 We eventually heard from a friend of ours
18:16 where the church was located. When I heard
18:19 the AWR truth and talked to my friend
18:22 who is an adventist, I decided to come this church.
18:26 Now you've been sharing this message
18:27 with others, is that correct?
18:29 Foreign language
18:30 I have shared with so many people,
18:33 sometime many people will gather in my
18:35 home and we listen to the radio program.
18:37 How many people? There are about seven
18:40 of us in that group. Amen, brothers thank you so much.
18:44 Foreign language
18:48 We've got to go, there is one more group, I think.
18:50 Foreign language
18:54 Now this is another church group here, yes.
18:57 I can't remember here, this gentleman.
18:59 He's Devon. Tell us how come you
19:02 came today and why is this group here?
19:07 Before I was a Christian, I would seek the
19:09 fortuneteller's guidance all the time.
19:13 I will give him money and perform sacrifices for
19:16 him. By following his orders I had so many
19:19 problems. I lost all my property and my
19:23 entire family was sick. I even became
19:26 seriously ill. Finally I heard about God.
19:30 I began to listen to AWR. Always we heard
19:34 about AWR where she come to my house and
19:36 worship with us. I have given a peace of my
19:40 own land and provide number for us to have
19:42 our own church. I got to ask you too,
19:45 seems like for so many people here go to
19:47 fortunetellers. Why do the people go to the
19:50 fortunetellers, and it seems like every story
19:53 I've heard it's always disaster when they
19:56 Go the fortuneteller. Seeking fortunetellers
20:00 is a tradition in our culture. Our people know
20:05 nothing about god. So we're following the
20:07 tradition of our families and go to the fortunetellers.
20:12 So the entire culture is wrapped around
20:15 fortunetelling, it's supposedly trying to tell
20:17 the future. So how exciting it is to be
20:19 free from all that in Jesus Christ. Thank you.
20:23 Now you young fellows, you've said you are
20:26 in fortunetelling also. Yes, they were.
20:29 What happens if the fortuneteller tells
20:31 you to do something and you don't do it?
20:33 Foreign language
20:36 We really fear the fortune teller and if
20:38 he orders us and we don't listen,
20:40 we expect something bad to happen to us.
20:43 And what bad could happen to you?
20:47 Death! Death! Well that's pretty final.
20:52 So you've seen it, it's happened to someone
20:54 you know or you've just thought
20:55 that this is what could happen.
20:57 Foreign language
21:00 We hear that from our fathers and grandparents.
21:03 We've witnessed people get seriously sick and
21:05 they say it's because they're disobedient
21:08 to the fortuneteller's orders.
21:10 Now how have your lives changed since
21:12 you've found Jesus Christ. Our lives have
21:14 changes so much. Fellows, thank you so
21:17 much today, I appreciate it. We will see each
21:19 other in heaven one day soon. We need to
21:22 find our other group here and talk with them
21:24 a moment. Through the Radio Wave of AWR
21:28 God is reaching people around the world.
21:32 We'd like to offer you an edition of Making
21:34 Waves. It's four of our episodes brought to
21:36 you from around the world. God speaking
21:39 to hearts, the hearts of the listeners of AWR
21:42 exciting stories. We hope that you'll share
21:44 those with friends and neighbors, acquaintances,
21:47 anyone you come in contact with.
21:48 Join us to make waves, it's completely free.
21:52 Right now the information is on your screen.
21:55 For your free, no obligation DVD,
21:57 write to Adventist World Radio, 12501,

22:03 Maryland 20904, or call 1-866-503-3531
22:11 or log onto www.awr.org/MWDVD.
22:19 Be sure to request offer number 10,
22:21 that number again is 1-866-503-3531.
22:29 Here's another story of hope from Adventist
22:32 World Radio. In the summer of 2003,
22:36 fifty volunteers set out on bicycles across
22:38 the Karnataka-Goa region of India.
22:41 Their mission was to invite town's people
22:43 from around that region to one of fifty
22:45 different locations, where they could listen
22:48 to the Adventist World Radio. Many people in
22:51 the Karnataka-Goa region do not own radios,
22:54 and those that do often have never heard
22:57 of Adventist World Radio. The goal of the
22:59 project was to establish listeners clubs
23:01 that would meet regularly to listen to the
23:03 programs, hopefully leading the people to
23:06 Christ. To date over two thousand five hundred
23:10 people have been baptized through the listeners clubs.
23:16 Adventist World Radio shares the hope of
23:19 Christ with millions of people everyday in
23:22 their own languages. For more
23:24 information visit awr.org.
23:29 Now, you're a great group of people.
23:30 Are there more people that couldn't come
23:32 to join you today? Yeah, they are some
23:35 more. Now I see several of you, now forgive
23:39 me 'cause I'm old but you look very young.
23:42 It's great to see young people accepting
23:44 the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Can one of
23:46 you that's the younger of the group tell
23:49 me how it happened? Most of us young
23:52 people are in school. So it's easy for us
23:55 to read and understand the truth in the
23:57 Bible and because of that many of us
24:01 are accepting Jesus Christ. So, you're all
24:04 sharing Jesus with others? Amen.
24:06 Yeah, yes we're sharing. You've been
24:08 grinning and smiling so much I got to ask
24:10 you the question. So you're instrumental in
24:14 kind of helping these people as they
24:15 listen to AWR, and then they begin coming
24:19 to you and asking questions? I travel to
24:24 their villages and there was no Adventist
24:26 Church, but most of the people they were
24:28 listening to AWR. Most of them knew something
24:32 about the sabbath too. many had questions
24:34 about adventist church, so I help them
24:37 understand the awr message. eventually they
24:40 all accept jesus christ and we have all
24:43 begun worshiping together. so are you all
24:46 happy in jesus christ today. yes, we do
24:49 have. has god changed your lives every
24:52 one of you? yes. i'm seeing this grin,
24:55 i like this grin. it's always a blessing to meet
25:00 dozens of people living in extremely remote
25:03 areas, who have spent their entire lives
25:05 believing the fortunetellers and following their
25:08 lives until they've turned on their radios and
25:11 a spring of little water filled them to over
25:14 flowing. Now, no matter how hard the devil
25:33 tries to disrupt the result, even during the
25:36 baptism of celebration, they will not be
25:39 robbed of victory in Christ.
25:59 Today in our program we've seen an example
26:01 of what AWR does. Usually what happens,
26:05 one person somehow begins to listen to the
26:08 radio. They feel their heart s with a message
26:12 of what they've heard, and then they have
26:14 the impulse to tell somebody else.
26:16 We begin to get another listener and they
26:19 listen, they form a group, and the next
26:21 impulse is to become a church. And as we've
26:24 seen here today, we have six different
26:26 churches that have been formed all from
26:29 the listening to Adventist World Radio.
26:32 In the scriptures, in the Book of Colossians,
26:34 chapter 1, there are several verses here
26:37 that the Apostle Paul writes to his people.
26:40 And I think they apply to these people
26:42 here as well. We thank God, the Father
26:46 of our Lord Jesus Christ when we pray for
26:48 you because we have heard of your faith
26:51 in Christ Jesus and of the love that you
26:54 have for all the saints. All over the world
26:57 this gospel is bearing fruit and growing just
27:01 as it has been doing among you since the
27:04 day you heard it and understood God's
27:07 grace in all its truth. That's happening
27:11 in so many places all over the world this
27:14 gospel is growing, because they're able to
27:17 hear it, and internalize it into their hearts.
27:21 And we at AWR will keep making waves
27:23 as well as long as we have the resources
27:26 to continue our work and you can be a part
27:28 of this as well. If you'd like to partner with
