Jesus set an open door before the people of Philadelphia, 00:00:01.20\00:00:03.03 the church of brotherly love and said, 00:00:03.03\00:00:04.50 please walk through it. 00:00:04.50\00:00:06.16 Accept an invitation to me, get to know me. 00:00:06.16\00:00:09.06 Svetlana did exactly that. 00:00:09.06\00:00:11.30 She walked all the way through that door 00:00:11.30\00:00:13.36 and she found brotherly love. 00:00:13.36\00:00:14.90 She found fellowship with Jesus Christ. 00:00:14.90\00:00:16.90 It changed her life. Stay tuned and find out how. 00:00:16.90\00:00:20.46 "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, 00:01:24.10\00:01:27.36 these are the words of Him who is holy and true, 00:01:27.36\00:01:29.80 who holds the key of David, what He opens 00:01:29.80\00:01:33.06 no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open. 00:01:33.06\00:01:37.13 I know your deeds. 00:01:37.13\00:01:38.36 See, I place before you an open door 00:01:38.36\00:01:40.93 that no one can shut. 00:01:40.93\00:01:42.90 I know that you have little strength 00:01:42.90\00:01:44.90 yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name." 00:01:44.90\00:01:48.20 In the Book of Revelation Chapter 3, Jesus gave to John 00:01:53.16\00:01:57.13 the revelation about this church, Philadelphia, 00:01:57.13\00:02:00.30 the church of brotherly love. 00:02:00.30\00:02:02.60 Unfortunately, this is all that is left 00:02:02.60\00:02:04.33 and this really isn't what was left from the time 00:02:04.33\00:02:07.20 that John wrote his letter, because this was built 00:02:07.20\00:02:09.13 in about 600 AD. 00:02:09.13\00:02:11.96 Nothing here left, but yes indeed there is, 00:02:11.96\00:02:15.00 because Jesus laid before this church the open door. 00:02:15.00\00:02:19.13 He set before them a message of hope and salvation 00:02:19.13\00:02:22.60 as long as they would hold fast 00:02:22.60\00:02:24.16 and hang on and they did. 00:02:24.16\00:02:26.46 It is the only one of the churches that Jesus 00:02:26.46\00:02:28.60 had no negative counsel for. 00:02:28.60\00:02:30.73 They truly held fast. 00:02:30.73\00:02:33.20 Philadelphia was founded by Attalus II Philadelphus. 00:02:38.70\00:02:42.30 He was known for his brotherly love 00:02:42.80\00:02:44.50 because of the loyalty he had shown to his elder brother. 00:02:44.50\00:02:47.66 This city was established as a gateway to Phrygia. 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.80 This area was at the crossroads 00:02:50.80\00:02:52.90 of several trade routes. 00:02:52.90\00:02:54.20 One of the greatest crossroads of ancient civilizations, 00:03:01.70\00:03:04.86 Philadelphia is in an area called Anatolia, 00:03:04.86\00:03:08.16 which is a broad peninsula that lies 00:03:08.16\00:03:10.06 between the Black and Mediterranean seas. 00:03:10.06\00:03:13.40 Called Asia Minor by the Romans, 00:03:13.40\00:03:15.33 the land is the Asian part of modern Turkey. 00:03:15.33\00:03:18.23 The building behind me is a gorgeous building 00:03:26.66\00:03:28.53 right here on the campus of Zaoksky. 00:03:28.53\00:03:31.60 It's a huge campus. 00:03:31.60\00:03:33.23 It shouldn't be here. 00:03:33.23\00:03:34.60 Years ago, the people went to Moscow 00:03:34.60\00:03:37.03 to try and get permission to start a campus in Moscow. 00:03:37.03\00:03:40.40 But the officials would have nothing to do with it. 00:03:40.40\00:03:42.83 Finally after much negotiation 00:03:42.83\00:03:44.93 and time and energy, they said, we'll put you out here, 00:03:44.93\00:03:47.60 virtually in the middle of nowhere, 00:03:47.60\00:03:49.10 couple of hours from Moscow. 00:03:49.10\00:03:51.73 What happened was a miracle 00:03:51.73\00:03:53.70 because people came from all around 00:03:53.70\00:03:55.40 to donate their time, energy, love and money to this campus. 00:03:55.40\00:03:59.90 Today there is over a 1,000 students here. 00:03:59.90\00:04:03.16 What a miracle to the-- testimony of the power of God. 00:04:03.16\00:04:06.66 There's another miracle today we want to share with you, 00:04:06.66\00:04:09.13 and that's the miracle of Svetlana. 00:04:09.13\00:04:11.46 She was tuning the radio, came across AWR, 00:04:11.46\00:04:14.63 and fell in love with Jesus Christ. 00:04:14.63\00:04:17.20 She came to the campus today. 00:04:17.20\00:04:19.16 We talked with her and-- you're going to be excited 00:04:19.16\00:04:21.26 and intrigued about her story. 00:04:21.26\00:04:23.23 We actually traveled for hours to get here last night 00:04:28.80\00:04:32.36 and Svetlana has been trying to teach me 00:04:32.36\00:04:35.43 where we are, and it's Zaoksky. 00:04:35.43\00:04:38.66 I did it. Was I good? 00:04:38.66\00:04:42.96 She's a real sweet lady and I want to thank you 00:04:42.96\00:04:46.30 for allowing us to come and talk with you today. 00:04:46.30\00:04:48.50 Tell me, sometime ago you were tuning the radio 00:04:51.40\00:04:55.16 and you found AWR, share that with me. 00:04:55.16\00:05:01.53 I was friends with Ivana 00:05:01.53\00:05:03.93 and she told me about this organization in Tula. 00:05:03.93\00:05:07.53 This was a while back when Peter Kulakov was around. 00:05:18.60\00:05:26.10 We were a voice of hope and I wanted to write them 00:05:26.10\00:05:32.66 while I was attending Bible studies here. 00:05:32.66\00:05:39.50 So I decided to write to Voice of Hope and within a week, 00:05:39.50\00:05:44.80 I receive a letter in return with Bible assignments. 00:05:44.80\00:05:52.46 I was extremely happy and I still have those books. 00:05:52.46\00:05:59.66 So you called our studio, or you wrote our studio 00:05:59.66\00:06:04.70 and then they sent you a set of Bible lessons. 00:06:04.70\00:06:07.50 You did the Bible lessons. 00:06:07.50\00:06:08.73 Yes, Bible assignments and a little book 00:06:10.80\00:06:15.06 and I studied happily. 00:06:15.06\00:06:17.40 So our studio followed up with you then. 00:06:17.40\00:06:19.26 Yes, it did. And -- and what happened in your heart 00:06:19.26\00:06:22.90 as you started doing those lessons, 00:06:22.90\00:06:24.53 as you read the material, what happened? 00:06:24.53\00:06:26.43 You know, when I wasn't living with my husband, 00:06:29.40\00:06:32.86 I heard it from someone, 00:06:32.86\00:06:34.86 I didn't remember who, about this seminary. 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.70 I study at a school here and I decided 00:06:43.10\00:06:46.83 to go to the seminary once I went 00:06:46.83\00:06:50.66 and then I went again. 00:06:50.66\00:06:52.40 Now, it pulls me in like a magnet. 00:06:56.43\00:06:59.73 Saturdays are my days and that's it. 00:06:59.73\00:07:04.70 So, you heard that -- that the seminary that was here, 00:07:04.70\00:07:09.10 that was connected in someway with the people 00:07:09.10\00:07:11.66 who were giving you the Bible lessons. 00:07:11.66\00:07:15.26 Yes. Now your husband, Victor, 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.90 he wouldn't come on camera, but he was listening 00:07:17.90\00:07:20.70 at the same time. 00:07:20.70\00:07:21.83 Was he also doing the Bible studies? 00:07:21.83\00:07:25.40 No, he didn't. The Bible is only in my hands. 00:07:25.40\00:07:31.53 But when it came to baptism, 00:07:36.66\00:07:39.30 I turned my baptism assignment in. 00:07:39.30\00:07:41.73 But when it came for him to answer the question, 00:07:50.80\00:07:54.53 he just walked out of the room, that's it. 00:07:54.53\00:08:00.56 None of your neighbors, 00:08:00.56\00:08:01.73 no one else around you were Christians? 00:08:01.73\00:08:03.66 No, they are not. 00:08:03.66\00:08:05.63 But, this program touched your heart. 00:08:05.63\00:08:09.03 Of course, very heart. This was unexpected. 00:08:09.03\00:08:15.00 After the great Babylonian kingdom, 00:08:20.23\00:08:21.83 the Medes and the Persians took control, 00:08:21.83\00:08:24.26 then was Alexander the Great. 00:08:24.26\00:08:26.23 He stormed in like a mighty man he was, 00:08:26.23\00:08:28.80 took over everything. 00:08:28.80\00:08:30.23 But he died in a drunken stupor. 00:08:30.23\00:08:32.90 After that time, his four generals 00:08:32.90\00:08:34.56 split up the kingdoms. 00:08:34.56\00:08:35.80 Cassander, Ptolemy, Seleucus, Lysimachus. 00:08:35.80\00:08:39.30 Lysimachus controlled the-- area just to the north of us. 00:08:39.30\00:08:42.63 Seleucus controlled this area. 00:08:42.63\00:08:45.10 There were squabbles and fights between them, 00:08:45.10\00:08:47.63 deciding on who would get what territory. 00:08:47.63\00:08:50.43 Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, 00:08:50.43\00:08:54.60 was a border town. 00:08:54.60\00:08:56.03 It was a military outpost, a military area, 00:08:56.03\00:08:58.63 to this day it still is. 00:08:58.63\00:09:01.90 But somehow the legacy of Alexander the Great 00:09:01.90\00:09:04.70 still exists because they grow wine, they grow grapes. 00:09:04.70\00:09:07.80 They worship the God of Bacchus, the god of frivolity, 00:09:07.80\00:09:10.90 the god of drink and wine and party. 00:09:10.90\00:09:13.53 Still to this day, we see the great vineyards around 00:09:13.53\00:09:16.63 and everything else. 00:09:16.63\00:09:18.50 But Jesus made wonderful statement 00:09:18.50\00:09:20.76 to the people in Philadelphia, to the church, 00:09:20.76\00:09:23.06 the people of God. 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.53 He said, "I set before you an open door," 00:09:24.53\00:09:27.80 and the people in Philadelphia walked through 00:09:27.80\00:09:29.66 that door to get to know Jesus Christ 00:09:29.66\00:09:32.20 better, and they certainly did. 00:09:32.20\00:09:34.73 Here is another story of hope 00:09:43.46\00:09:46.10 from Adventist World Radio. 00:09:46.10\00:09:48.26 Prabha was ready to take her own life. 00:09:48.26\00:09:51.46 She had two small children and was abandoned 00:09:51.46\00:09:53.83 by her husband, and because her family 00:09:53.83\00:09:56.16 was too poor to help, Prabha had nowhere else to go. 00:09:56.16\00:09:59.96 Overcome by disappointment and grief, 00:09:59.96\00:10:02.66 she decided to commit suicide. 00:10:02.66\00:10:05.10 But that night, she says, was a great turning point 00:10:05.10\00:10:08.03 while tuning her radio, she stumbled 00:10:08.03\00:10:10.10 on a broadcast from Adventist World Radio. 00:10:10.10\00:10:13.50 Being a lifelong Hindu, she had never before heard 00:10:13.50\00:10:15.90 of a Christ who cared for her. 00:10:15.90\00:10:18.23 With a new hope in her heart, 00:10:18.23\00:10:19.80 Prabha decided to live for God. 00:10:19.80\00:10:22.63 So, she says, I'm sure I have a job 00:10:22.63\00:10:24.60 to do for the people who are like me on the edge of death. 00:10:24.60\00:10:28.83 Adventist World Radio shares the hope of Christ 00:10:31.13\00:10:34.93 with millions of people everyday 00:10:34.93\00:10:37.03 in their own languages. 00:11:51.50\00:11:54.93 Asia Minor enjoyed centuries of peace. 00:11:54.93\00:11:58.80 During the middle ages, as part of the Byzantine Empire, 00:11:58.80\00:12:01.46 it became a center of Christianity 00:12:01.46\00:12:03.80 and the guardian of the Greek and Roman cultures. 00:12:03.80\00:12:06.93 One of the chief medieval trade routes 00:12:06.93\00:12:08.66 passed through the region. 00:12:08.66\00:12:10.96 As the power of the empire declined, 00:12:10.96\00:12:13.00 Arabs and Mongols invaded. 00:12:13.00\00:12:15.50 In the 15th century, the Ottoman Turks conquered 00:12:15.50\00:12:18.20 the peninsula and made Istanbul, 00:12:18.20\00:12:20.80 then known as Constantinople, the capital. 00:12:20.80\00:12:23.93 The Ottoman Empire lasted until 1922. 00:12:23.93\00:12:26.73 The concept of brotherly love is not exclusive 00:12:30.83\00:12:33.30 to the church in Philadelphia, but was known to Christians 00:12:33.30\00:12:36.50 throughout the Eastern Roman Empire. 00:12:36.50\00:12:39.16 And so was singled out to John 00:12:39.16\00:12:41.13 in his vision of the seven churches, as an example. 00:12:41.13\00:12:47.03 For centuries, Turkey was the center of Christianity. 00:12:47.03\00:12:51.20 Today the area is populated by a kind, hardworking people. 00:12:51.20\00:12:54.66 Constantine is perhaps best known for being 00:13:02.30\00:13:04.56 the first Christian Roman Emperor. 00:13:04.56\00:13:06.80 His reign was certainly a turning point 00:13:06.80\00:13:08.66 for the Christian Church. 00:13:08.66\00:13:10.56 In 313, Constantine announced toleration 00:13:10.56\00:13:13.43 of Christianity in the Edict of Milan, 00:13:13.43\00:13:16.10 which removed penalties for professing Christianity. 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.70 You had spent years under communism 00:13:29.03\00:13:33.70 where God was outlawed, 00:13:33.70\00:13:35.66 but now you found Jesus Christ. 00:13:35.66\00:13:37.60 Yes. I was in a serious car accident. 00:13:52.90\00:13:56.06 I couldn't walk and I couldn't stand. 00:13:56.06\00:13:59.53 I was also in a serious construction injury, 00:14:17.00\00:14:20.63 where I went under a serious surgery. 00:14:20.63\00:14:23.66 So you have a lot to thank the Lord for it. 00:14:39.40\00:14:44.33 Yes. I always thank God no matter what, forever. 00:14:44.33\00:14:51.66 You told me that-- you used to pack a gun 00:14:51.66\00:14:54.36 and you used to guard a store. 00:14:54.36\00:14:59.10 Yes, I had to. I work at this place for the government 00:14:59.10\00:15:04.10 on the way to Moscow, where without a rifle 00:15:04.10\00:15:08.46 you can't take a step. 00:15:08.46\00:15:10.36 You look like a sweet lady, would you've shot anybody? 00:15:10.36\00:15:15.00 I had to. Yes. You. But I always shot at the legs. 00:15:15.00\00:15:22.30 I had to guard trains and people tried stealing. 00:15:28.86\00:15:33.33 I had to run and chase them away. 00:15:38.90\00:15:43.80 We couldn't come to your home today, 00:15:43.80\00:15:45.63 because you said, maybe it would cause 00:15:45.63\00:15:48.03 problems with the neighbors and maybe later on 00:15:48.03\00:15:50.00 the neighbors would break yours windows and things. 00:15:50.00\00:15:55.60 Yes, anything can happen because they are all drunks 00:15:55.60\00:16:00.26 and they are all unfortunate. 00:16:00.26\00:16:03.26 One of the world's greatest architectural achievements 00:16:10.23\00:16:12.80 is the Hagia Sophia, a Christian Church. 00:16:12.80\00:16:16.46 Unfortunately, nothing remains 00:16:16.46\00:16:17.96 of the original Hagia Sophia, which was built on this site 00:16:17.96\00:16:21.00 in the 4th century by Constantine the Great. 00:16:21.00\00:16:25.06 Constantine was the first Christian Emperor 00:16:25.06\00:16:27.16 and the founder of the City of Constantinople, 00:16:27.16\00:16:29.53 which was called the new Rome. 00:16:29.53\00:16:32.26 The Hagia Sophia was one of several 00:16:32.26\00:16:34.60 great churches he built in important cities 00:16:34.60\00:16:37.00 throughout his empire. 00:16:37.00\00:16:38.70 Following the destruction of Constantine's church, 00:16:42.63\00:16:44.93 a second was built by his son, Constantius 00:16:44.93\00:16:47.76 and the Emperor Theodosius the Great. 00:16:47.76\00:16:51.30 This second Church was burnt down during 00:16:51.30\00:16:52.96 the Nika riots of 532, though fragments 00:16:52.96\00:16:55.96 of it have been excavated and can be seen today. 00:16:55.96\00:17:01.73 Hagia Sophia was rebuilt in her present form 00:17:01.73\00:17:04.70 between 532 and 537 under the personal 00:17:04.70\00:17:08.06 supervision of Emperor Justinian I. 00:17:08.06\00:17:11.10 After completion, Justinian is said to have exclaimed, 00:17:11.10\00:17:13.70 "Solomon, I have out done thee." 00:17:13.70\00:17:19.23 Justinian's basilica was at once the culminating 00:17:19.23\00:17:22.33 architectural achievement of late antiquity, 00:17:22.33\00:17:24.90 and the first masterpiece of Byzantine architecture. 00:17:24.90\00:17:28.70 Its influence both architecturally and liturgically 00:17:28.70\00:17:32.00 was widespread and enduring 00:17:32.00\00:17:34.03 in the Eastern Orthodox Roman Catholic 00:17:34.03\00:17:36.53 and Muslim worlds alike. 00:17:36.53\00:17:38.23 Through the radio waves of AWR, God 00:17:42.90\00:17:45.10 is reaching people around the world. 00:17:45.10\00:17:48.70 We'd like to offer you an edition of Making Waves. 00:17:48.70\00:17:51.23 It's four of our episodes brought 00:17:51.23\00:17:52.80 to you from around the world. 00:17:52.80\00:17:55.20 God speaking to hearts, the hearts of the listeners of AWR, 00:17:55.20\00:17:58.43 exciting stories. 00:21:02.93\00:21:05.46 How long is it going to be possible 00:21:05.46\00:21:07.86 to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ? 00:21:07.86\00:21:09.56 Unfortunately, it seems like in many of these areas, 00:21:11.03\00:21:13.83 the opportunity is fading rapidly. 00:21:13.83\00:21:16.33 I hope you'll help us to spread the gospel soon. 00:21:16.33\00:21:20.10 Tell me as we're closing, 00:21:25.10\00:21:26.40 what has AWR and the Gospel meant to you. 00:21:26.40\00:21:32.73 How has it really changed your life? 00:21:32.73\00:21:35.86 You know, I receive a calendar 00:21:38.80\00:21:41.13 with Jesus Christ on it. 00:21:41.13\00:21:43.46 One day I felt sick and I pray and he answered my prayers. 00:21:49.23\00:21:54.56 I felt his touch and this calendar 00:22:02.80\00:22:06.06 had a picture of a young boy 00:22:06.06\00:22:08.30 and a girl and I felt that 00:22:08.30\00:22:10.40 Jesus touched me the same way. 00:22:10.40\00:22:13.30 So, Jesus has touched your heart. 00:22:17.33\00:22:21.43 And now, we're all brothers and sisters in Christ. 00:22:21.43\00:22:25.00 Of course, yes. 00:22:25.00\00:22:28.13 There is a better world to come in, yes. 00:22:28.13\00:22:32.80 Seems like you've had kind of a hard life?
