The things I once hated, I now love. 00:00:01.96\00:00:02.93 And the things I once loved, I now hate. 00:00:02.93\00:00:05.23 Interesting words from the Apostle Paul, 00:00:05.23\00:00:07.20 but can those changes really occur 00:00:07.20\00:00:09.33 in a person's life? 00:00:09.33\00:00:10.76 Stay tuned, you'll find out. 00:00:10.76\00:00:12.13 The Apostle Paul sailed the Aegean Sea, 00:00:48.33\00:00:50.93 landed here at Ephesus. 00:00:50.93\00:00:52.26 It's long since silted in because of so many years, 00:00:52.26\00:00:55.73 but this was the harbor, this was the area 00:00:55.73\00:00:57.56 that all the sailors and the Apostle Paul walked up 00:00:57.56\00:01:01.16 these areas here amongst these columns. 00:01:01.16\00:01:03.76 Why did he come? 00:01:03.76\00:01:04.80 I believe he came because 00:01:04.80\00:01:05.86 this was a Seatown, a town that people 00:01:05.86\00:01:08.20 from all over the world came to. 00:01:08.20\00:01:10.46 And Paul was no dummy, he understood that 00:01:10.46\00:01:12.86 if he shared the gospel of Jesus Christ here, 00:01:12.86\00:01:15.53 it would go to all the world. 00:01:15.53\00:01:17.86 And certainly, Paul made a stir here in this area. 00:01:17.86\00:01:21.06 The Grand Amphitheater of the Ephesians, 00:01:33.56\00:01:36.86 a place that held, 23,000- 24,000 people. 00:01:36.86\00:01:41.16 Imagine, they would come out here 00:01:41.16\00:01:43.30 on a regular basis and at this time 00:01:43.30\00:01:45.10 to hear the Greek plays, 00:01:45.10\00:01:47.10 because the Greeks controled the whole area. 00:01:47.10\00:01:49.40 The Greeks built this as their theater for their arts, 00:01:49.40\00:01:53.33 for their enjoyment, for the plays, 00:01:53.33\00:01:54.93 but then something different happened, 00:01:54.93\00:01:56.23 the Romans took over. 00:01:56.23\00:01:57.80 The Romans beat them back, and now under Roman control, 00:01:57.80\00:02:01.10 they take out the first group of seats, why? 00:02:01.10\00:02:03.83 So they can have gladiator games. 00:02:03.83\00:02:05.90 They need an area to place the tigers 00:02:05.90\00:02:07.83 and the lions and all of the other things 00:02:07.83\00:02:09.46 that would actually devour people of all things. 00:02:09.46\00:02:13.86 But then something very interesting occurred, 00:02:13.86\00:02:16.03 the Apostle Paul came to town one day, 00:02:16.03\00:02:18.53 the little Roman, the intelligent little Roman, 00:02:18.53\00:02:21.36 he began talking with people. 00:02:21.36\00:02:23.56 And soon Demetrius, we're told 00:02:23.56\00:02:25.33 in the Book of Acts is not happy, 00:02:25.33\00:02:27.83 because you see Demetrius is a silversmith. 00:02:27.83\00:02:31.80 And the trade is having problems because 00:02:31.80\00:02:34.13 Paul is preaching against all the other Gods so much, 00:02:34.13\00:02:37.66 so much that now their money, 00:02:37.66\00:02:40.93 their monitory situation is going down, down, down 00:02:40.93\00:02:44.10 because nobody is buying Gods any longer for their home. 00:02:44.10\00:02:48.20 What happens? 00:02:48.20\00:02:49.43 Demetrius comes here, calls everybody from the city 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.33 and begins complaining and shouting 00:02:52.33\00:02:53.96 to all of these people, who by the way, 00:02:53.96\00:02:56.00 from right down here 00:02:56.00\00:02:57.26 the person in the farthest row 00:02:57.26\00:02:59.06 can hear your voice perfectly. 00:02:59.06\00:03:02.30 And I just imagine Demetrius standing here 00:03:02.30\00:03:04.70 and yelling at the Apostle Paul saying, 00:03:04.70\00:03:06.83 we need to do something about this man, 00:03:06.83\00:03:08.53 we've got to do something. 00:03:08.53\00:03:11.30 And soon they take a hold of Paul, 00:03:11.30\00:03:13.63 and they're ready to tear him apart, 00:03:13.63\00:03:15.66 ready to tear him apart, but God intervenes 00:03:15.66\00:03:18.30 and finally, a little difference away 00:03:18.30\00:03:20.40 they take him to a prison, where Paul literally raised 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.86 the roof with his singing. 00:03:23.86\00:03:25.10 The history of Ephesus began 00:03:30.83\00:03:32.36 in the Mid-seventh Century BC. 00:03:32.36\00:03:34.76 It was attacked by Samarians, but unlike 00:03:34.76\00:03:36.83 its neighbor Magnesia, Ephesus survived the attack. 00:03:36.83\00:03:40.50 For a while it was ruled by tyrants, 00:03:40.50\00:03:42.33 allied by marriage to the King of Lydia 00:03:42.33\00:03:44.76 and was conquered by Croesus, 00:03:44.76\00:03:46.16 who rebuilt the Temple of Artemis, 00:03:46.16\00:03:48.10 bringing in many large columns 00:03:48.10\00:03:49.60 and golden calves for the temple. 00:03:49.60\00:03:51.80 Ephesus was not only the most magnificent, 00:03:51.80\00:03:54.13 but the most corrupt of the cities of Asia. 00:03:54.13\00:03:57.20 Superstition and sensual pleasure held 00:03:57.20\00:03:59.46 its way over her teaming population, 00:03:59.46\00:04:01.76 under the shadow of her temples, 00:04:01.76\00:04:03.20 criminals of every grade found shelter. 00:04:03.20\00:04:05.70 And the most degrading vices flourished. 00:04:05.70\00:04:08.90 It's so incredible to open the word of God. 00:04:08.90\00:04:12.40 To read in the Book of Acts, the Book of Ephesians 00:04:12.40\00:04:14.83 and realize I'm standing in the very places, 00:04:14.83\00:04:18.26 the very location where the Apostle Paul 00:04:18.26\00:04:21.13 preached so many sermons, 00:04:21.13\00:04:22.36 where he labored for the word of God. 00:04:22.36\00:04:24.63 The giant of God himself walked down the street, 00:04:24.63\00:04:28.10 went down to the harbor 00:04:28.10\00:04:29.33 to where all the fisherman work, 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.30 watch them offload their catches, 00:04:31.30\00:04:33.33 talked with these men. 00:04:33.33\00:04:35.20 Two hundred and fifty thousand people 00:04:35.20\00:04:37.20 lived in the city and soon 00:04:37.20\00:04:39.23 because of Paul's work in Acts 19 Verse 20 it says, 00:04:39.23\00:04:42.40 "So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed." 00:04:42.40\00:04:46.50 Because of Paul, because of Paul's relationship with God, 00:04:46.50\00:04:50.20 he spread the word throughout Ephesus. 00:04:50.20\00:04:52.00 He raised up a church, he raised up a work 00:04:52.00\00:04:54.50 that spreads throughout the world. Wow! 00:04:54.50\00:04:57.43 One can only get a taste of the former glory 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.56 by looking around that the pieces of pillars 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.70 that lie in this main thoroughfare. 00:05:03.70\00:05:07.00 The area from the library to town, 00:05:07.00\00:05:09.43 or from the theater back up this way to the library, 00:05:09.43\00:05:14.03 it's all marble, you can see slight tracks 00:05:14.03\00:05:17.30 from the Roman chariots. 00:05:17.30\00:05:19.46 What's most interesting to me however 00:05:19.46\00:05:21.43 is that they had a drainage system here, 00:05:21.43\00:05:23.03 so when the rains came, 00:05:23.03\00:05:24.40 it all dropped into the sewerage system. 00:05:24.40\00:05:27.10 Credible ingenuity by the Romans. 00:05:27.10\00:05:29.10 We're forever tempted to think that these people 00:05:36.83\00:05:39.10 were not extremely intelligent 00:05:39.10\00:05:41.70 in how they constructed and what they constructed. 00:05:41.70\00:05:45.06 This library right behind me should remove all doubt. 00:05:45.06\00:05:48.90 These people did a marvelous job, 00:05:48.90\00:05:50.53 a beautiful and exquisite job. 00:05:50.53\00:05:52.56 However, this library 00:05:52.56\00:05:54.33 only lasted for about 40 years. 00:05:54.33\00:05:56.23 It was destroyed by earthquakes. 00:05:56.23\00:05:58.10 And it was rebuilt in the 1970s, 00:05:58.10\00:06:00.63 originally from the Second century however, 00:06:00.63\00:06:02.90 it housed a great deal of knowledge 00:06:02.90\00:06:05.13 of the then known world. 00:06:05.13\00:06:07.10 It was about the third largest library 00:06:07.10\00:06:09.36 in existence at that time. 00:06:09.36\00:06:11.40 Below it we're told there just a little peep hole, 00:06:11.40\00:06:14.76 but supposedly the governor is buried down there, 00:06:14.76\00:06:17.66 that existed earlier during that time. 00:06:17.66\00:06:20.10 The building may be considered 00:06:22.03\00:06:23.40 important today because it is one 00:06:23.40\00:06:25.53 of the few remained examples 00:06:25.53\00:06:27.33 of an ancient Roman influence library. 00:06:27.33\00:06:30.13 It also shows how public libraries 00:06:30.13\00:06:32.13 were not only built in Rome itself, 00:06:32.13\00:06:34.23 but also throughout the empire. 00:06:34.23\00:06:37.23 The people that constructed this library 00:06:37.23\00:06:39.06 were so intelligent about the design 00:06:39.06\00:06:41.00 that they actually created a doubled-wall system 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.40 in order to eliminate humidity. 00:06:43.40\00:06:45.40 Not only that, but they created a roof design 00:06:45.40\00:06:48.46 that eliminated all the elements 00:06:48.46\00:06:50.60 but allowed in the most white, 00:06:50.60\00:06:52.46 that people might still be able to read. 00:06:52.46\00:06:54.40 Now that's intelligent. 00:06:54.40\00:06:55.83 The Library of Celsus was built 00:06:57.36\00:06:59.00 to store 12,000 scrolls 00:06:59.00\00:07:01.33 and it serves a monumental tomb to Celsus. 00:07:01.33\00:07:04.56 It was unusual to be buried within a library 00:07:04.56\00:07:06.96 or even within city limits. 00:07:06.96\00:07:09.03 So this was a special honor for Celsus. 00:07:09.03\00:07:11.83 I'm told this is the place where the Governor's buried. 00:07:13.16\00:07:15.40 How do they know that? 00:07:15.40\00:07:16.43 Well, some years ago, 00:07:16.43\00:07:17.56 I guess they took mirrors and they put them 00:07:17.56\00:07:19.76 way over the edge to check it out 00:07:19.76\00:07:21.90 and they could actually see some type of casket 00:07:21.90\00:07:24.16 or coffin or sarcophagus down there. 00:07:24.16\00:07:27.70 But over the years it's kind of caved in so, 00:07:27.70\00:07:30.20 this is all we get is a hole now, 00:07:30.20\00:07:31.73 I guess and I belief that, that's where it is. 00:07:31.73\00:07:33.96 Well, I spend some time this afternoon 00:07:46.96\00:07:48.66 jostling elbow to elbow in the market 00:07:48.66\00:07:50.73 with 20,000 or 30,000 people it seems. 00:07:50.73\00:07:53.90 I've got my spices, 00:07:53.90\00:07:55.06 I've got my linens for my wife. 00:07:55.06\00:07:57.33 I got the fish that were just delivered 00:07:57.33\00:07:59.00 right from the ocean fresh. 00:07:59.00\00:08:00.86 And now I think I'll go check out the library. 00:08:00.86\00:08:03.53 Well, at least, that's my active imagination 00:08:03.53\00:08:06.50 for what it must have been like at the time. 00:08:06.50\00:08:10.53 Right behind me here is the market place 00:08:10.53\00:08:12.36 of the great city of Ephesus. 00:08:12.36\00:08:14.53 People from all over brought their wares 00:08:14.53\00:08:16.56 from the then known Roman Empire. 00:08:16.56\00:08:18.60 Spices and various things to trade. 00:08:18.60\00:08:21.30 I can imagine now Apostle Paul 00:08:21.30\00:08:23.10 walking through from stall to stall. 00:08:23.10\00:08:25.40 Pointing these Romans to the one and only true God, 00:08:25.40\00:08:28.23 Jesus Christ. What a scene? 00:08:28.23\00:08:31.30 What a time in our history? 00:08:31.30\00:08:33.16 The roots of Christianity growing up right here. 00:08:33.16\00:08:36.10 As a communist, she thought that 00:08:39.00\00:08:40.33 there just must be more to life than this. 00:08:40.33\00:08:43.13 But what was it? 00:08:43.13\00:08:44.83 Jesus told the Ephesians to persevere 00:08:44.83\00:08:48.26 and that's exactly what she did. 00:08:48.26\00:08:50.10 She persevered until she found 00:08:50.10\00:08:52.20 that loving relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:08:52.20\00:08:55.20 Stay tuned to find out more. 00:08:55.20\00:08:56.70 Here is another story of hope from "Adventist World Radio." 00:08:58.63\00:09:03.03 Kaluram was a poor field laborer 00:09:03.03\00:09:05.36 near Gujarat in India. 00:09:05.36\00:09:07.20 Finding his work tedious, 00:09:07.20\00:09:08.76 Kalu purchased a small radio to relieve the boredom. 00:09:08.76\00:09:12.20 One day he came across a program 00:09:12.20\00:09:13.90 talking about Jesus, it was from Adventist World Radio, 00:09:13.90\00:09:17.73 after listening for a few days, 00:09:17.73\00:09:19.43 Kalu looked for a pastor who could tell him 00:09:19.43\00:09:21.80 more about Christ. 00:09:21.80\00:09:23.26 Soon convinced of the Christian truth, 00:09:23.26\00:09:25.56 Kalu was baptized and became an outreach leader 00:09:25.56\00:09:28.66 in his home town and the surrounding area. 00:09:28.66\00:09:31.56 Witnessing in predominantly Hindu towns 00:09:31.56\00:09:33.83 is not always safe. 00:09:33.83\00:09:35.20 And Kalu was once attacked 00:09:35.20\00:09:36.80 when approaching a town to preach. 00:09:36.80\00:09:39.13 However, through the efforts of Kalu 00:09:39.13\00:09:41.26 and the volunteers he has trained, 00:09:41.26\00:09:43.16 nearly 1,000 people have accepted Christ. 00:09:43.16\00:09:47.63 Adventist World Radio shares the hope of Christ 00:09:47.63\00:09:51.16 with millions of people everyday. 00:09:51.16\00:09:54.00 For more information, visit awr.org. 00:09:54.00\00:09:58.10 As you can see AWR is frontline mission radio. 00:09:59.96\00:10:04.06 Our first priority is to travel 00:10:04.06\00:10:05.90 where missionaries cannot go. 00:10:05.90\00:10:08.43 We broadcast thousands of hours each day 00:10:08.43\00:10:10.96 and 70 major languages of the world. 00:10:10.96\00:10:14.16 AWR has the capability and capacity of blanketing 00:10:14.16\00:10:17.30 almost 80% of the world's population. 00:10:17.30\00:10:20.36 Not only do we broadcast the short wave radio, 00:10:20.36\00:10:23.60 but our signal is on over 1,000 FM and AM stations 00:10:23.60\00:10:27.40 around the world as well. 00:10:27.40\00:10:29.56 Our broadcast subscribers, Internet users, 00:10:29.56\00:10:32.46 satellite downlinks are growing rapidly. 00:10:32.46\00:10:35.03 Evidence by the 100,000 plus e-mails, 00:10:35.03\00:10:37.90 letters, and phone calls we receive 00:10:37.90\00:10:40.50 each and every year. 00:10:40.50\00:10:41.90 Yes, AWR is your mission radio. 00:10:41.90\00:10:45.16 No walls and no borders, 00:10:45.16\00:10:46.80 for AWR that means change lives 00:10:46.80\00:10:48.83 and change hearts around the world, 00:10:48.83\00:10:50.63 because God is using 00:10:50.63\00:10:52.63 the airways of AWR to reach people everywhere. 00:10:52.63\00:10:55.86 So, your name is Lidia. 00:10:59.90\00:11:01.40 Foreign language 00:11:01.40\00:11:02.80 Lidia, what type of work do you do or did you do? 00:11:02.80\00:11:05.80 Foreign language 00:11:05.80\00:11:10.80 I was a stay at home mother, 00:11:18.80\00:11:20.86 and did the work around the house 00:11:20.86\00:11:22.86 and I have two children. 00:11:22.86\00:11:24.13 Foreign language 00:11:24.13\00:11:28.03 My job was the family, house, and children. 00:11:28.03\00:11:31.63 I was interested in Bible. 00:11:31.63\00:11:33.63 My grandparents was Christians. 00:11:33.63\00:11:37.50 Foreign language 00:11:37.50\00:11:39.03 My grandfather had a Bible. 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.33 When I was a little girl, I looked at the Bible, 00:11:41.33\00:11:45.30 it was such a large book with the big letters. 00:11:45.30\00:11:49.33 Foreign language 00:11:49.33\00:11:53.26 My grandparents always prayed for me 00:11:53.26\00:11:56.30 and I think that is why I was interested in Bible. 00:11:56.30\00:12:00.23 I have always been interested in religious radio programs. 00:12:03.26\00:12:07.83 I listened to anything that spoke about God, 00:12:07.83\00:12:11.36 even Muslim programs. 00:12:11.36\00:12:13.66 Foreign language 00:12:13.66\00:12:18.66 So you always had this desire from young person 00:12:22.60\00:12:26.40 to get, know more about religion. 00:12:26.40\00:12:30.30 Foreign language 00:12:30.30\00:12:33.23 So how long was your search? 00:12:33.23\00:12:36.26 Foreign language 00:12:36.26\00:12:40.03 I was trying to read the Bible, 00:12:40.03\00:12:41.93 but we move to Novomoskovsk and the Bible stayed 00:12:41.93\00:12:45.96 with my grandparents in the Khalkhas. 00:12:45.96\00:12:49.33 So we had no Bible to read and we forgot all about it. 00:12:49.33\00:12:56.46 So you did your searching started out 00:12:56.46\00:12:58.86 during the time of communism? 00:12:58.86\00:13:01.03 Yes, during that time it was forbidden 00:13:01.03\00:13:05.13 to have a Bible in the house. 00:13:05.13\00:13:07.60 We found a really old and tattered Bible. 00:13:07.60\00:13:10.56 Somebody had given it to my parents. 00:13:10.56\00:13:13.76 We were afraid to show it to anyone. 00:13:13.76\00:13:16.06 We weren't really interested in reading it at that time. 00:13:16.06\00:13:21.50 It's hard for me to imagine 00:13:21.50\00:13:22.96 that reading the Bible is a hard thing to do 00:13:22.96\00:13:25.86 or a dangerous thing to do. 00:13:25.86\00:13:27.46 Can you tell me a little more about that? 00:13:27.46\00:13:30.56 Where did you go, how did you find the Bible 00:13:30.56\00:13:32.90 or study or do anything like that? 00:13:32.90\00:13:37.60 Yes, we were trying to read the Bible, 00:13:37.60\00:13:40.26 but if anyone knocked at the door, 00:13:40.26\00:13:42.93 we would quickly hide the Bible. 00:13:42.93\00:13:44.93 So no one would know what we were doing. 00:13:44.93\00:13:48.16 Immediately behind me is where they kept the lions. 00:13:54.03\00:13:57.20 The lions for what you ask, well, 00:13:57.20\00:13:59.33 what concerns me is the lions for the Christians, 00:13:59.33\00:14:02.60 because the Christians died for their faiths, 00:14:02.60\00:14:04.83 on this spot. 00:14:04.83\00:14:07.73 It's hard to imagine that the Christians 00:14:07.73\00:14:11.03 who would not give allegiance to another God, 00:14:11.03\00:14:14.80 stood here on this location 00:14:14.80\00:14:17.00 and they let the lions right out of that area 00:14:17.00\00:14:20.56 and they were very hungry lions 00:14:20.56\00:14:22.33 and these people died for their faith in Jesus Christ. 00:14:22.33\00:14:24.90 But the good news is, it's only momentary, 00:14:24.90\00:14:29.50 because the Bible says, O death, 00:14:29.50\00:14:30.86 where is thy sting? 00:14:30.86\00:14:31.86 O grave, where is thy victory? 00:14:31.86\00:14:33.93 There is a home waiting for those people soon 00:14:33.93\00:14:36.60 when Jesus Christ return. 00:14:36.60\00:14:39.23 He's waiting for you and me too, 00:14:39.23\00:14:41.16 to give our hearts and life fully to Him, 00:14:41.16\00:14:43.60 fully to Him. 00:14:43.60\00:14:44.93 We'll have the courage and the strength 00:14:44.93\00:14:46.33 to follow him every moment of everyday. 00:14:46.33\00:14:48.66 We're not exactly sure who came through the corridor, 00:14:55.23\00:14:57.53 whether it was the lions or the Christians. 00:14:57.53\00:15:00.36 But one thing is for certain, 00:15:00.36\00:15:02.33 the outcome was always the same. 00:15:02.33\00:15:04.23 A few miles out it's the Island of Patmos, 00:15:11.83\00:15:14.80 it's a quaint and beautiful island really. 00:15:14.80\00:15:18.13 But it was a prison for John 00:15:18.13\00:15:21.00 and on the island as you go up the hill, 00:15:21.00\00:15:24.63 and there's a cave there and they think 00:15:24.63\00:15:26.33 that that's where the Apostle John stayed 00:15:26.33\00:15:30.43 and probably had a lot of meditative time 00:15:30.43\00:15:34.20 and quite time to write the Book of Revelation. 00:15:34.20\00:15:38.80 But Praise the Lord, he wasn't exiled forever. 00:15:38.80\00:15:40.96 Yes. Came back here to, apparently, 00:15:40.96\00:15:43.43 the place where we are now. Yes. 00:15:43.43\00:15:46.00 This little old city of Ephesus is nearby 00:15:46.00\00:15:49.83 and that's the place where John spent many, many years. 00:15:49.83\00:15:53.50 He was actually the pastor of Ephesus. 00:15:53.50\00:15:56.40 Really? I never knew that. 00:15:56.40\00:15:58.70 Of the church there in Ephesus. Okay, okay. 00:15:58.70\00:16:01.23 And he, he is a unique disciple of Jesus. 00:16:01.23\00:16:05.83 He was at that time one of the younger ones. 00:16:05.83\00:16:10.06 Peter was an older person 00:16:10.06\00:16:12.63 and I think of the time 00:16:12.63\00:16:14.73 when just before the resurrection, 00:16:14.73\00:16:17.10 or at the time of the resurrection, 00:16:17.10\00:16:19.80 they were running to the tomb and John ran, 00:16:19.80\00:16:23.03 but Peter was having a hard time 00:16:23.03\00:16:25.70 keeping up with him, 00:16:25.70\00:16:27.06 but John respectfully waited until Peter, 00:16:27.06\00:16:29.50 the elder one got there before they did anything. 00:16:29.50\00:16:32.40 I can almost start appreciating that nowadays. 00:16:32.40\00:16:34.20 Yes. Being behind just a little bit. 00:16:34.20\00:16:37.56 Well, John was known as the Apostle of love. 00:16:37.56\00:16:41.33 And his gospel is a little different than the others. 00:16:41.33\00:16:44.50 It is. The three gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke 00:16:44.50\00:16:47.66 are more narrative in story. 00:16:47.66\00:16:50.80 John's is more theological. 00:16:50.80\00:16:52.93 He talks about faith and the Holy Spirit 00:16:52.93\00:16:56.00 and love and in all of his writings 00:16:56.00\00:16:59.13 that theme of love seems to come through. 00:16:59.13\00:17:02.10 And I love the way he was so humble in his writings, 00:17:02.10\00:17:04.33 he never referred to himself, 00:17:04.33\00:17:06.50 only the one Jesus loved or-- Yes. 00:17:06.50\00:17:09.86 Always diverted attention away from himself. 00:17:09.86\00:17:12.10 That's right. 00:17:12.10\00:17:13.53 Now, John, John was also a person 00:17:13.53\00:17:17.60 that lived the longest. 00:17:17.60\00:17:20.23 He was, it was almost to the end 00:17:20.23\00:17:23.70 of the first century before he died. 00:17:23.70\00:17:26.53 Of course he spent many years on Patmos in exile, 00:17:26.53\00:17:30.73 but apparently after that exile 00:17:30.73\00:17:33.16 he was able to come back here to Ephesus 00:17:33.16\00:17:36.23 and to this area. 00:17:36.23\00:17:37.76 And apparently it seemed liked 00:17:37.76\00:17:39.00 he lived down his life here 00:17:39.00\00:17:40.53 and then actually the tomb is up over here, 00:17:40.53\00:17:42.96 what they say he's buried. Yes. 00:17:42.96\00:17:44.80 But this is a very sacred site to Catholics, 00:17:44.80\00:17:46.76 I know, because two popes have visited this area. 00:17:46.76\00:17:49.43 Yes. And also there is a place nearby here, 00:17:49.43\00:17:55.93 I understand, it is a place where Mary, 00:17:55.93\00:17:59.56 Jesus' mother lived and of course Jesus asked John 00:17:59.56\00:18:04.63 to take care of His mother, 00:18:04.63\00:18:06.23 when He was hanging on the cross. 00:18:06.23\00:18:07.60 That's right and of course John loving Jesus so much 00:18:07.60\00:18:10.03 would have done exactly that. 00:18:10.03\00:18:11.70 Apparently right through to the end. 00:18:11.70\00:18:14.13 To think that this could be the place John is buried, 00:18:14.13\00:18:17.36 you think of all the history here, it's, it's-- 00:18:17.36\00:18:20.70 Through the radio wave, that AWR, 00:18:20.70\00:18:22.66 God is reaching people around the world. 00:18:22.66\00:18:24.76 We'd like you to offer you an edition of making waves. 00:18:26.46\00:18:29.00 It's four of our episodes brought to you 00:18:29.00\00:18:30.90 from around the world. 00:18:30.90\00:18:32.93 God speaking to hearts, 00:18:32.93\00:18:34.43 the hearts of the listeners of AWR, exciting stories. 00:18:34.43\00:18:37.40 We hope that you'll share those 00:18:37.40\00:18:38.66 with friends and neighbors, acquaintances, 00:18:38.66\00:18:40.76 anyone you come and contact with. 00:18:40.76\00:18:42.30 Join us, to make waves. 00:18:42.30\00:18:44.06 It's completely free, 00:18:44.06\00:18:45.76 right now the information is on your screen. 00:18:45.76\00:18:47.63 For your free, no obligation DVD, 00:18:49.20\00:18:51.50 write to Adventist World Radio, 12501, 00:18:51.50\00:18:55.63 Old Columbia Pike Silver Spring, Maryland 00:18:55.63\00:18:58.50 20904 or call 1-866-503-3531, 00:18:58.50\00:19:05.56 or log on to www.awr.org/MWDVD. 00:19:05.56\00:19:12.70 Be sure to request offer number 10. 00:19:12.70\00:19:15.26 That number again is 1-866-503-3531. 00:19:15.26\00:19:20.73 It was much easier to listen to the radio. 00:19:24.80\00:19:28.00 We started to listen to the voice of hope. 00:19:28.00\00:19:31.26 I was really interested in voice of hope, 00:19:31.26\00:19:33.80 because it was the most simple and easy to understand 00:19:33.80\00:19:37.63 of all the Christian radio shows. 00:19:37.63\00:19:40.43 I sent a letter so I could learn more 00:19:40.43\00:19:43.30 and take the Bible correspondence course. 00:19:43.30\00:19:47.13 How did you ever find the AWR program? 00:19:47.13\00:19:50.63 It was by chance. 00:19:50.63\00:19:52.90 Tell me about that first time, 00:19:52.90\00:19:54.10 when you found it by chance? 00:19:54.10\00:19:55.70 Foreign language 00:19:55.70\00:19:59.70 I was so happy that we had the radio station. 00:19:59.70\00:20:03.36 It was a pleasure to listen, 00:20:03.36\00:20:05.60 I don't know how to explain it, 00:20:05.60\00:20:07.50 but it was so pleasant to listen 00:20:07.50\00:20:10.03 and learn more about Jesus 00:20:10.03\00:20:12.30 and I really wanted to learn more. 00:20:12.30\00:20:15.00 Foreign language 00:20:15.00\00:20:19.66 You said you accidentally came across the program 00:20:19.66\00:20:22.16 the first time but why didn't you keep the dial there, 00:20:22.16\00:20:24.96 what, what tweaked your interest to stay, 00:20:24.96\00:20:28.13 stay right there? 00:20:28.13\00:20:29.43 Foreign language 00:20:29.43\00:20:34.40 I was always interested in a program like this. 00:20:35.26\00:20:38.76 Foreign language 00:20:38.76\00:20:40.76 That's what feed my soul, it was like bread. 00:20:40.76\00:20:45.30 It was so nice, I was happy 00:20:45.30\00:20:47.96 to get something to feed myself. 00:20:47.96\00:20:51.76 It was so close to my heart. 00:20:51.76\00:20:54.23 Foreign language 00:20:54.23\00:20:59.23 So you wrote down the address, 00:20:59.53\00:21:02.06 you sent for the Bible lessons and then what? 00:21:02.06\00:21:06.00 Foreign language 00:21:06.00\00:21:10.23 I was really interested and was searching the Bible 00:21:10.23\00:21:13.50 to see if it was really right to keep Saturday. 00:21:13.50\00:21:17.26 I was attending the Orthodox Church 00:21:17.26\00:21:19.76 and I was asking the priest and the people 00:21:19.76\00:21:23.50 and even went to confession and ask about Saturday. 00:21:23.50\00:21:27.70 I felt like it was a big sin in my heart 00:21:27.70\00:21:30.96 because I wasn't keeping Saturday as the Sabbath. 00:21:30.96\00:21:35.16 Foreign language 00:21:35.16\00:21:40.10 The priest told me, 00:21:40.10\00:21:41.40 I forgive you all of your sins, 00:21:41.40\00:21:43.86 but I was waiting for more information 00:21:43.86\00:21:46.60 for the answer to my question, 00:21:46.60\00:21:49.30 but he didn't explain anything. 00:21:49.30\00:21:51.43 I was asking around about Saturday, 00:21:51.43\00:21:53.70 but no one was keeping Saturday as the Sabbath. 00:21:53.70\00:21:57.16 When I read the Bible and saw those words, 00:21:57.16\00:22:00.06 I started to keep the Sabbath myself. 00:22:00.06\00:22:02.70 Foreign language 00:22:02.70\00:22:07.70 But where did you get your first Bible? 00:22:07.96\00:22:10.40 Communism it was illegal, how did you get it? 00:22:10.40\00:22:13.06 My aunt sent us a Bible from Khalkhas. 00:22:13.06\00:22:16.26 This Bible belonged to some church. 00:22:16.26\00:22:18.46 My aunt was losing her sight and couldn't read anymore 00:22:18.46\00:22:22.50 because it has small letters, 00:22:22.50\00:22:25.30 so she sent the Bible to us 00:22:25.30\00:22:27.80 and we started reading this Bible. 00:22:27.80\00:22:30.26 Then you mentioned in the card, 00:22:38.10\00:22:39.56 then we didn't have time to finish it but a story about, 00:22:39.56\00:22:42.83 yes, Eusebius had shared it. 00:22:42.83\00:22:45.10 Yes, Eusebius is one of the early church historians 00:22:45.10\00:22:49.00 and he writes about the Apostle John 00:22:49.00\00:22:51.66 in one of his chapters. 00:22:51.66\00:22:53.13 He tells the story of how John had been away 00:22:53.13\00:22:56.70 from Ephesus for quite some time, 00:22:56.70\00:22:59.10 of the church that he founded here. 00:22:59.10\00:23:01.76 And when he came back to visit one time, 00:23:01.76\00:23:05.23 he discovered that one of the young man 00:23:05.23\00:23:08.00 that he personally had led to Christ had been following in 00:23:08.00\00:23:12.93 with bad company and had gone with them 00:23:12.93\00:23:15.23 and they had become bandits, 00:23:15.23\00:23:17.53 they wandered around in the hills here 00:23:17.53\00:23:20.40 and would attack travelers and so on. 00:23:20.40\00:23:23.60 And when he heard that this young man 00:23:23.60\00:23:25.73 had forsaken Christ, 00:23:25.73\00:23:27.10 then had gone off with this, 00:23:27.10\00:23:28.76 he could hardly contain himself. 00:23:28.76\00:23:31.33 And so as the story goes, though he was an old man, 00:23:31.33\00:23:34.73 gray haired, he took off climbing the hills, 00:23:34.73\00:23:39.43 looking all around to see if he could find this young man. 00:23:39.43\00:23:43.23 Well, when he got near the cave, 00:23:43.23\00:23:45.76 that of course the bandits had guards all around 00:23:45.76\00:23:48.03 and they took him prisoner and into the cave, 00:23:48.03\00:23:51.20 but the young man knew him 00:23:51.20\00:23:52.43 and told the guards that it was okay. 00:23:52.43\00:23:55.53 And the Apostle John, that apostle of love plead 00:23:55.53\00:24:00.63 with this young man to come back to Jesus Christ. 00:24:00.63\00:24:05.06 Why would he leave what he had learned, 00:24:05.06\00:24:07.56 and he just used every persuasion 00:24:07.56\00:24:11.26 that he could think of, 00:24:11.26\00:24:12.80 and finally what could the young man do, 00:24:12.80\00:24:15.13 but respond to his spiritual father, 00:24:15.13\00:24:18.70 the Apostle John, 00:24:18.70\00:24:20.20 and come back to the church of Ephesus with him. 00:24:20.20\00:24:23.60 And you know, that's such an example 00:24:23.60\00:24:26.06 of the Old Apostle, the Apostle of Love. 00:24:26.06\00:24:30.33 What an example for you and for me, 00:24:30.33\00:24:32.16 you know to never let a soul go. That's right. 00:24:32.16\00:24:34.76 Because it means eternal life or eternal love. 00:24:34.76\00:24:37.76 John was really serious about that, 00:24:37.76\00:24:39.96 he, too often I think we kind of let people drift away 00:24:39.96\00:24:44.40 and don't do anything about it, 00:24:44.40\00:24:45.90 but John was intense about maintaining 00:24:45.90\00:24:49.66 and keeping this young man in the fold. Amen. 00:24:49.66\00:24:53.33 In the second chapter, the Book of Revelation, 00:24:58.50\00:25:00.60 God specifically writes to the church here at Ephesus 00:25:00.60\00:25:04.90 "Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write, 00:25:04.90\00:25:07.30 these things saith he that holdeth the seven stars 00:25:07.30\00:25:09.86 in his right hand, 00:25:09.86\00:25:11.06 who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks. 00:25:11.06\00:25:14.50 I know thy works, and thy labor, 00:25:14.50\00:25:16.70 and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear with them 00:25:16.70\00:25:20.00 which are evil." 00:25:20.00\00:25:21.46 And he goes on to say. 00:25:21.46\00:25:22.76 "Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, 00:25:22.76\00:25:26.23 because thou hast left thy first love. 00:25:26.23\00:25:29.33 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, 00:25:29.33\00:25:31.33 and repent, and do thy first works 00:25:31.33\00:25:33.86 and here is the reward of those for doing 00:25:33.86\00:25:36.80 the first works To Him that overcometh, 00:25:36.80\00:25:39.26 will I give to eat of the tree of life, 00:25:39.26\00:25:42.60 which is in the midst of the paradise of God." 00:25:42.60\00:25:45.16 What an exciting point. 00:25:45.16\00:25:46.96 Since you found Jesus Christ now 00:25:48.83\00:25:50.80 and the fullness of His love, 00:25:50.80\00:25:52.96 what does that mean to you? 00:25:52.96\00:25:55.20 Foreign language 00:25:55.20\00:25:58.73 I'm really peaceful in my soul 00:25:58.73\00:26:00.90 and I hope that somebody will take care of me and help me. 00:26:00.90\00:26:05.10 Foreign language 00:26:05.10\00:26:09.16 Lidia, I want to thank you so much for sharing today 00:26:09.16\00:26:12.10 and being in the rain out here but still staying, 00:26:12.10\00:26:14.80 thank you so much.
