00:01:55.91\00:01:59.18 Thank you for having me. 00:01:59.21\00:02:01.22 I'm currently working as a chaplain of this school 00:02:01.25\00:02:04.75 called San Yu Adventist School. 00:02:04.79\00:02:06.12 Yes. 00:02:06.15\00:02:07.49 It's a mission school with about 600 students. 00:02:07.52\00:02:11.66 About 40% of the students come from Mainland China 00:02:11.69\00:02:15.53 Forty percent? 00:02:15.56\00:02:16.90 Yes, that works out to be about, you know, about 400, 00:02:16.93\00:02:21.84 300 to 200 plus students. 00:02:21.87\00:02:24.64 Well, now, why are these students 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.74 coming from Mainland China? 00:02:26.78\00:02:29.78 They looking for a better education 00:02:29.81\00:02:32.05 and also an English speaking environment. 00:02:32.08\00:02:35.05 And, you know, Singapore is the education hub. 00:02:35.08\00:02:37.92 And so, and it is much nearer to China. 00:02:37.95\00:02:41.39 So this is a good stepping stone 00:02:41.42\00:02:43.89 to places like Australia, England, USA, 00:02:43.93\00:02:48.16 in the future for the tertiary education. 00:02:48.20\00:02:50.70 Yes. 00:02:50.73\00:02:52.07 So tell me how do you interact with these students 00:02:52.10\00:02:55.80 and with their mothers? 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.17 What do you do? 00:02:57.21\00:02:58.54 The students who are here, 00:02:58.57\00:03:00.08 they study in from grade one to 10. 00:03:00.11\00:03:03.48 And, but especially for children, 00:03:03.51\00:03:05.85 who are in the elementary, 00:03:05.88\00:03:07.52 the mothers actually here with them. 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.85 And these PRC mothers 00:03:09.88\00:03:12.45 would send their children to school every day. 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.96 And so we try to interact with their mothers. 00:03:14.99\00:03:18.23 And what we do is we offer them some very practical help, 00:03:18.26\00:03:22.96 for example, English class, 00:03:23.00\00:03:25.23 where we teach them conversational English. 00:03:25.27\00:03:27.97 And then from there, we get to know them as friends. 00:03:28.00\00:03:32.31 And they are very interested 00:03:32.34\00:03:34.81 with what the children are studying here, 00:03:34.84\00:03:36.75 especially Bible is something very new to them, 00:03:36.78\00:03:41.08 Bible as a subject, and they go to the church, 00:03:41.12\00:03:44.69 Thompson Chinese Church for the chapel classes, 00:03:44.72\00:03:47.52 and we make friends with them. 00:03:47.56\00:03:50.16 And we invite them slowly to our Sabbath school 00:03:50.19\00:03:52.93 to our children class, 00:03:52.96\00:03:54.50 and they come for worship together. 00:03:54.53\00:03:57.07 Now, when they come here, 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.03 do they realize that it's a Christian school? 00:03:59.07\00:04:01.20 Yes, before they decide to register with us, 00:04:01.24\00:04:04.81 we tell them very openly 00:04:04.84\00:04:06.84 that their children will be taught Christianity, 00:04:06.88\00:04:10.38 or rather moral education, through Christianity, 00:04:10.41\00:04:14.98 and they like it 00:04:15.02\00:04:16.65 because the children are learning good values, 00:04:16.69\00:04:20.46 especially the characters in the Bible 00:04:20.49\00:04:24.26 that Daniel, Jesus Christ, you know, 00:04:24.29\00:04:26.90 and children will go by 00:04:26.93\00:04:28.26 and tell their mothers the story. 00:04:28.30\00:04:29.80 And for students who are in high school, 00:04:29.83\00:04:33.60 they will have personal Bible study with us 00:04:33.64\00:04:36.07 after the gospel week, 00:04:36.10\00:04:38.01 where we invite them to get to know Jesus. 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.78 So every year we have baptisms of the students 00:04:40.81\00:04:43.95 and the mothers. 00:04:43.98\00:04:45.31 Wow. 00:04:45.35\00:04:46.68 And they then go back to Mainland China 00:04:46.72\00:04:49.58 and they have the opportunity to share when they go back? 00:04:49.62\00:04:51.79 Precisely. 00:04:51.82\00:04:53.22 How many years have you been doing this, Pastor? 00:04:53.25\00:04:56.89 I have been in this field of education 00:04:56.93\00:04:59.53 for the past 26 years. 00:04:59.56\00:05:00.90 Wow. 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.26 But the work with PRC or people from Mainland China, 00:05:02.30\00:05:06.40 are the most recent, 10 years. 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.07 Okay. 00:05:08.10\00:05:09.67 What particular challenges do you face in this ministry? 00:05:09.70\00:05:13.78 I think the challenge will be 00:05:13.81\00:05:15.94 how to have the mother 00:05:15.98\00:05:19.08 to be able to also relate the new faith to the fathers, 00:05:19.11\00:05:24.19 because most of them their husbands are in China. 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.62 Right. 00:05:26.65\00:05:27.99 And usually before we have their consent 00:05:28.02\00:05:33.13 to have baptism to join us as a big family of God, 00:05:33.16\00:05:37.33 we would ask their fathers, 00:05:37.37\00:05:39.87 and even though 00:05:39.90\00:05:41.24 they may not become Christians immediately, 00:05:41.27\00:05:43.51 and they are happy 00:05:43.54\00:05:44.87 with what the wives and the children are doing, 00:05:44.91\00:05:49.38 and they give us the permission, 00:05:49.41\00:05:50.81 and we invite them to come to witness this big day. 00:05:50.85\00:05:54.82 Wonderful. 00:05:54.85\00:05:56.25 Can you give me perhaps a story of someone, 00:05:56.28\00:05:58.72 a child or a parent 00:05:58.75\00:06:00.46 who has come to know Jesus through the school? 00:06:00.49\00:06:02.79 All right. 00:06:02.82\00:06:04.16 This year, we have had two mothers, 00:06:04.19\00:06:05.53 especially I have about 10 students, 00:06:05.56\00:06:08.63 the mothers of these students studying with me, 00:06:08.66\00:06:10.87 and two of them decided that 00:06:10.90\00:06:12.90 they want to join us 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.27 as a family of God through baptism, 00:06:14.30\00:06:16.84 somewhere in September this year. 00:06:16.87\00:06:19.27 And this mother, her name is Ventel 00:06:19.31\00:06:22.78 and she shared this with her husband. 00:06:22.81\00:06:25.41 And the husband actually got more excited than her 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.48 and he got baptized in the month of July 00:06:28.52\00:06:30.89 in Chengdu, in China, first, before his wife. 00:06:30.92\00:06:34.79 Wow. 00:06:34.82\00:06:36.16 You know, and the children are still young, 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.56 one in grade one and one in grade three, 00:06:38.59\00:06:40.93 but they love the story of Jesus, 00:06:40.96\00:06:43.57 and as they grow in the faith in Jesus Christ and His love, 00:06:43.60\00:06:49.20 and when they go to the high school, 00:06:49.24\00:06:50.87 I believe they also become 00:06:50.91\00:06:53.41 a family of God through baptism. 00:06:53.44\00:06:55.51 Fantastic. 00:06:55.54\00:06:56.88 So these children are coming here 00:06:56.91\00:06:58.71 with no knowledge whatsoever of the Bible? 00:06:58.75\00:07:00.82 Precisely. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.18 There is a piece of blank paper and we write on them 00:07:02.22\00:07:04.79 "the love of God." 00:07:04.82\00:07:06.15 Well, it's a wonderful opportunity. 00:07:06.19\00:07:07.59 Yes.
