Adventist mission in southern Asia, 00:00:20.72\00:00:22.98 a delicious recipe from the Mission 360 Kitchen, 00:00:23.02\00:00:26.25 and the sights and sounds of Paris. 00:00:26.29\00:00:28.49 All this and much more coming up next on Mission 360. 00:00:28.52\00:00:31.93 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:01:14.17\00:01:16.04 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:16.07\00:01:17.41 Today's program is coming to you from Paris, 00:01:17.44\00:01:19.97 the capital of France. 00:01:20.01\00:01:21.34 And from the Sacre-Coeur viewpoint here, 00:01:21.38\00:01:24.71 you can look over all of Metropolitan Paris. 00:01:24.75\00:01:27.25 And it's quite a stunning view. 00:01:27.28\00:01:28.95 And you can see iconic landmarks 00:01:28.98\00:01:30.69 such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral 00:01:30.72\00:01:32.92 that was damaged by fire not so long ago. 00:01:32.95\00:01:35.72 And in this inner-city area, 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.26 there's just over 2 million people living 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.06 but in greater metropolitan Paris, 00:01:40.10\00:01:42.53 you have some 14,13-14 million people, 00:01:42.56\00:01:45.50 just a growing metropolis. 00:01:45.53\00:01:47.24 But on today's program, 00:01:47.27\00:01:48.60 we'll be learning more about what's happening right here. 00:01:48.64\00:01:50.81 But first up, let's travel to Southern Asia 00:01:50.84\00:01:53.44 to see more about mission there. 00:01:53.48\00:01:55.04 Jesus would have died for just one person 00:02:00.22\00:02:02.48 of the 1.3 billion who live in India, Bhutan, 00:02:02.52\00:02:05.55 Nepal and the Maldives. 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.56 That's how much He loves the people 00:02:07.59\00:02:09.52 here in the southern Asia division 00:02:09.56\00:02:11.43 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:02:11.46\00:02:14.13 The work of the Adventist Church 00:02:14.16\00:02:15.50 began in southern Asia in India, in 1893. 00:02:15.53\00:02:19.83 Five colporteurs, two from America 00:02:19.87\00:02:22.27 and a family of three from New Zealand 00:02:22.30\00:02:24.31 arrived to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:02:24.34\00:02:27.44 The next year brought another missionary, 00:02:27.48\00:02:29.68 Georgia Burrus. 00:02:29.71\00:02:31.05 The mission board 00:02:31.08\00:02:32.41 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:32.45\00:02:33.78 paid George's passage 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.15 from the United States to India. 00:02:35.18\00:02:37.19 Once there, she was responsible for her own living expenses. 00:02:37.22\00:02:40.92 But God provided in miraculous ways. 00:02:40.96\00:02:44.33 Later, she married a fellow missionary, 00:02:44.36\00:02:46.73 and together they ministered in India for 40 years. 00:02:46.76\00:02:50.57 From these humble beginnings, 00:02:50.60\00:02:51.93 the Adventist Church in southern Asia 00:02:51.97\00:02:53.70 has grown to 1.6 million members. 00:02:53.74\00:02:57.27 We praise God for this growth. 00:02:57.31\00:02:59.51 But the vast majority of people in this region 00:02:59.54\00:03:01.51 have not yet heard the good news about Jesus. 00:03:01.54\00:03:04.18 Less than 1% of the population are Adventists. 00:03:09.25\00:03:13.09 The Maldives, a country of 392,000 people 00:03:13.12\00:03:17.16 has no Adventist work. 00:03:17.19\00:03:19.46 More than 800 languages are spoken 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.36 in Nepal, Bhutan and India. 00:03:21.40\00:03:24.27 We have materials 00:03:24.30\00:03:25.63 and only a handful of those languages. 00:03:25.67\00:03:28.87 And yet church members such as Global Mission pioneers 00:03:28.90\00:03:32.11 are sharing the love of Jesus in communities 00:03:32.14\00:03:34.38 throughout this vast territory. 00:03:34.41\00:03:36.75 Urban Centers of Influence have been established in cities 00:03:36.78\00:03:39.75 and thousands are being helped 00:03:39.78\00:03:41.12 through schools and medical institutions. 00:03:41.15\00:03:44.42 Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:03:44.45\00:03:45.99 has been treating the sick in Nepal since 1960. 00:03:46.02\00:03:49.49 And there are 11 more Adventist hospitals 00:03:49.52\00:03:51.56 that offer holistic medical care in India. 00:03:51.59\00:03:54.50 Thousands receive a holistic education 00:03:54.53\00:03:56.60 at 144 Adventist secondary schools 00:03:56.63\00:03:59.90 and nine institutions 00:03:59.93\00:04:01.27 of higher education across India, 00:04:01.30\00:04:03.30 including Spicer Adventist University. 00:04:03.34\00:04:06.68 Hope Channel India broadcasts in nine languages, 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.71 sharing stories of encouragement 00:04:09.74\00:04:11.38 and inspiration to people such as Rajesh. 00:04:11.41\00:04:14.88 Overwhelmed with financial difficulties in his family, 00:04:14.92\00:04:18.15 Rajesh just couldn't concentrate at work. 00:04:18.19\00:04:21.29 He lost his job and became depressed. 00:04:21.32\00:04:24.89 One day he came across 00:04:24.93\00:04:26.26 Hope Channel India's prayer line 00:04:26.29\00:04:27.86 and asked for prayer. 00:04:27.90\00:04:29.86 This was the first step in getting to know Jesus 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.83 and finding hope for his family. 00:04:32.87\00:04:35.24 He now has a new job to provide for his family. 00:04:35.27\00:04:39.14 Please continue to pray for the people of India, 00:04:39.17\00:04:41.54 Bhutan, Nepal and the Maldives and pray for the church. 00:04:41.58\00:04:46.11 With limited resources 00:04:46.15\00:04:47.85 and in the face of many challenges, 00:04:47.88\00:04:49.68 it seeks to remain faithful to God's call. 00:04:49.72\00:04:52.85 Thank you for your mission offerings, 00:04:52.89\00:04:54.89 which fuel mission in the southern Asia division 00:04:54.92\00:04:57.33 and around the world. 00:04:57.36\00:04:58.69 I'm delighted to be talking today with Pascal 00:05:17.61\00:05:20.25 who is a church member here in Paris, 00:05:20.28\00:05:23.08 and he is very involved in 00:05:23.12\00:05:24.85 personal ministries in the community here. 00:05:24.89\00:05:27.56 Pascal, thank you for joining us. 00:05:27.59\00:05:30.49 What are some of the challenges 00:05:30.53\00:05:31.86 that you face doing mission here in Paris? 00:05:31.89\00:05:34.93 A lot. 00:05:34.96\00:05:36.30 So the challenge the mission within the mission 00:05:36.33\00:05:39.47 is to make it known that God is not a fable. 00:05:39.50\00:05:43.64 Jesus Christ isn't the fable 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.37 and the idea is to tell our fellow men 00:05:45.41\00:05:48.44 that God loves them 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.15 and thus for this we have put in place 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.65 a few initiatives to explain, to explain who God is, 00:05:53.68\00:05:58.22 who Jesus Christ is for mankind. 00:05:58.25\00:06:01.92 Now, tell me about the, 00:06:01.96\00:06:04.06 I saw a T-shirt that says, "I will pray for you." 00:06:04.09\00:06:06.86 Tell me about the I will pray for you ministry? 00:06:06.90\00:06:09.96 So the T-shirt I'm praying for you 00:06:10.00\00:06:12.17 is an invitation to say in fact to our fellow brethren, 00:06:12.20\00:06:16.30 an invitation to pray for them. 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.47 And so in this initiative, we have set up flash mob 00:06:18.51\00:06:23.41 with songs and we wear our T-shirts, 00:06:23.45\00:06:27.98 and we enchant. 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.75 In any case, we invite people. 00:06:29.78\00:06:31.82 People out of curiosity are bound to find out why, 00:06:31.85\00:06:35.86 why we are wearing these T-shirts 00:06:35.89\00:06:38.76 and what is this invitation to pray for them 00:06:38.79\00:06:41.23 since we also have banners that we take along. 00:06:41.26\00:06:44.33 We also can ask for prayer with prayer groups, 00:06:44.37\00:06:49.37 with some church members who come with us 00:06:49.40\00:06:54.44 so that any fellow brethren who wishes to, 00:06:54.48\00:06:58.51 can request for prayers, listen to the songs 00:06:58.55\00:07:03.79 we sing to them. 00:07:03.82\00:07:06.52 And that's it. 00:07:06.55\00:07:08.19 We equally share invitations to Hope lunches. 00:07:08.22\00:07:11.06 That's it. 00:07:11.09\00:07:13.06 Now under the hood of a flash mob 00:07:13.09\00:07:16.00 being used before for mission, 00:07:16.03\00:07:18.00 but what sort of a response do you get? 00:07:18.03\00:07:21.47 He welcomes this with much intrigue, 00:07:21.50\00:07:26.31 lots of intrigue, because they wonder why, 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.91 what do you do, but also a lot of excitement 00:07:29.94\00:07:32.95 because some of them join us 00:07:32.98\00:07:34.52 when we do the flash mob choreography. 00:07:34.55\00:07:37.39 They dance with us, they sing with us. 00:07:37.42\00:07:39.69 Others request prayer. 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.19 They come and pray with us and it does them a lot of good. 00:07:41.22\00:07:46.19 Besides they're waiting for us every second 00:07:46.23\00:07:49.03 and fourth Sabbath 00:07:49.06\00:07:50.40 so that we can either pray for them 00:07:50.43\00:07:53.13 or sing with us. 00:07:53.17\00:07:55.44 So, Pascal, that's exciting, but there must be 00:07:55.47\00:07:58.17 some sort of a negative response as well 00:07:58.21\00:07:59.91 because this is a very secular culture 00:07:59.94\00:08:01.74 and to have people coming, saying, "I pray for you." 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.48 I don't know, tell me any negative response? 00:08:04.51\00:08:09.85 And effectively 00:08:09.88\00:08:11.22 we've received negative reactions, 00:08:11.25\00:08:13.66 notably someone quite drunk 00:08:13.69\00:08:16.12 who came to disrupt the flash mob. 00:08:16.16\00:08:22.00 We finally stopped the flash mob 00:08:22.03\00:08:23.97 and started praying. 00:08:24.00\00:08:25.47 We prayed and instantly 00:08:25.50\00:08:26.94 we saw the power of God manifest 00:08:26.97\00:08:29.04 because someone came out of nowhere 00:08:29.07\00:08:32.77 and pull that person out of the flash mob 00:08:32.81\00:08:35.11 and asked him to leave us alone. 00:08:35.14\00:08:37.51 And there we gave glory to God 00:08:37.55\00:08:39.21 because we were able to see divine power 00:08:39.25\00:08:41.48 manifesting directly. 00:08:41.52\00:08:43.15 Just then we said amen. 00:08:43.18\00:08:46.69 But you make good connections with many people. 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.92 Give me an example of somebody 00:08:48.96\00:08:50.43 whose life has been touched through this ministry? 00:08:50.46\00:08:54.00 We also actually saw some people 00:08:54.03\00:08:55.80 who hung on to the message, an example by the singing. 00:08:55.83\00:09:00.74 We were able to see people 00:09:00.77\00:09:02.10 who came, who came to sing with us. 00:09:02.14\00:09:04.61 We have also seen people who have asked to pray 00:09:04.64\00:09:07.64 after talking with them, because they have, 00:09:07.68\00:09:11.95 first they were able to understand that 00:09:11.98\00:09:16.52 understanding that what, 00:09:16.55\00:09:17.95 what is happening in the world is not because of God. 00:09:17.99\00:09:20.76 It is not because of God 00:09:20.79\00:09:22.12 since we are often used to blaming God, 00:09:22.16\00:09:25.59 if God exists why this, if God exists why that. 00:09:25.63\00:09:29.76 And then, in fact, 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.13 the discussion enabled us to allow, 00:09:31.17\00:09:35.90 to put things back in their right place 00:09:35.94\00:09:38.14 in the right way. 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.18 That's to say, if God is the way He is, 00:09:40.21\00:09:44.35 it's because He loves us and He's giving us the choice. 00:09:44.38\00:09:47.25 Precisely He leaves it up to the world 00:09:47.28\00:09:49.78 to have front experiences. 00:09:49.82\00:09:53.52 And then afterwards some consequences follow 00:09:53.56\00:09:56.59 because it's either good or bad. 00:09:56.62\00:09:59.53 But we can't say it's God's fault 00:09:59.56\00:10:02.06 when it gets bad. 00:10:02.10\00:10:03.83 And when it's good, what do we say? 00:10:03.87\00:10:06.70 That's great. 00:10:06.74\00:10:08.07 Now tell me about 00:10:08.10\00:10:09.44 the initiative called Hope Breakfast. 00:10:09.47\00:10:11.34 What happens with that? 00:10:11.37\00:10:13.07 So the Hope Lunch, when we invite people to come 00:10:13.11\00:10:16.68 and share food with us, there are several themes. 00:10:16.71\00:10:21.78 So we have lunch with them, if they have children, 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.92 we also have a games animation center. 00:10:24.95\00:10:27.16 And in the end, we have health stance 00:10:27.19\00:10:30.16 that allow them to, 00:10:30.19\00:10:31.56 to see a little bit what our church is about. 00:10:31.59\00:10:34.53 It is a presentation of the church 00:10:34.56\00:10:36.23 and the presentation of what we do in the church. 00:10:36.26\00:10:40.10 And also to create the link, the idea is to create a link 00:10:40.14\00:10:43.67 with those people after all. 00:10:43.71\00:10:45.31 A few days back, one of the persons 00:10:45.34\00:10:48.01 we invited to the Lunch of Hope called me to ask 00:10:48.04\00:10:50.71 when will you be organizing the next Lunch of Hope? 00:10:50.75\00:10:54.22 And there I could answer him, 00:10:54.25\00:10:56.08 because we will have our next Lunch of Hope 00:10:56.12\00:10:57.95 on the ninth of November. 00:10:57.99\00:10:59.69 That's great idea. 00:10:59.72\00:11:01.29 Now, Pascal, how does it make you feel 00:11:01.32\00:11:05.33 to be personally involved in ministry? 00:11:05.36\00:11:08.16 I live it with enthusiasm, 00:11:08.20\00:11:09.66 because when I see the smiles on the faces of the people 00:11:09.70\00:11:13.44 we meet, the joy of the people 00:11:13.47\00:11:16.27 who encouraged us to go ahead, amen. 00:11:16.30\00:11:19.04 It pleases us. It encourages us to continue. 00:11:19.07\00:11:22.11 And it's a great pleasure to proclaim the name of Jesus, 00:11:22.14\00:11:26.92 or to proclaim that God loves the world. 00:11:26.95\00:11:29.58 God loves everyone among us. Wonderful. 00:11:29.62\00:11:32.65 Merci beaucoup for sharing with us today, Pascal. 00:11:32.69\00:11:35.66 And viewers at home, 00:11:35.69\00:11:37.79 it's encouraging to see commitment 00:11:37.83\00:11:40.16 that's happening here in Paris 00:11:40.20\00:11:41.56 in the face of many, many challenges. 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.83 And so please pray for the church here in Paris. 00:11:43.87\00:11:47.10 Many, many people who don't even know about 00:11:47.14\00:11:50.07 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:11:50.11\00:11:51.67 We'll be right back right after this break. 00:11:51.71\00:11:53.48
