Welcome back to Tokyo. 00:00:17.61\00:00:18.95 You know, in a big city like this, 00:00:18.98\00:00:20.78 you see the high rises, you see the apartment blocks 00:00:20.82\00:00:23.42 and the commercial buildings and the busy streets 00:00:23.45\00:00:26.19 and then you turn a corner 00:00:26.22\00:00:27.56 and you come across a scene like this, 00:00:27.59\00:00:29.42 which is, at least for me surprising to see river boats 00:00:29.46\00:00:32.39 in the heart of the city. 00:00:32.43\00:00:34.26 Anyway, next up, we travel to Brazil to Brasilia 00:00:34.30\00:00:37.73 to meet a Waldensian student. 00:00:37.77\00:00:41.10 Hi, my guest today is a bit unusual, 00:00:41.14\00:00:45.17 not because he's unusual. 00:00:45.21\00:00:46.54 He's an ordinary person, 00:00:46.57\00:00:47.91 but he's doing extraordinary things 00:00:47.94\00:00:49.41 with God's help for mission. 00:00:49.44\00:00:51.98 So we're not going to tell you what his name is. 00:00:52.01\00:00:54.65 We're not going to show you his face 00:00:54.68\00:00:56.28 or where he was serving. 00:00:56.32\00:00:58.19 But I think you'll find this very interesting interview, 00:00:58.22\00:01:00.62 so we're just going to go for a little walk here so. 00:01:00.66\00:01:04.76 Thanks for joining us. 00:01:04.79\00:01:06.86 Now you are working or were working in a country 00:01:06.90\00:01:10.10 that we call a closed country. 00:01:10.13\00:01:12.13 Some people may not know what that means. 00:01:12.17\00:01:13.90 What does a closed country mean? 00:01:13.94\00:01:16.40 So we have some so-called closed countries in the world 00:01:16.44\00:01:21.61 that in that like in that case, 00:01:21.64\00:01:25.01 they have very strict regulations 00:01:25.05\00:01:29.05 on religions and on religious work. 00:01:29.08\00:01:32.75 So that's why we cannot act 00:01:32.79\00:01:36.86 as a normal religious worshiper 00:01:36.89\00:01:41.00 or worker as on many other, 00:01:41.03\00:01:44.43 as in our, most of our Western countries. 00:01:44.47\00:01:49.50 So in these countries 00:01:49.54\00:01:50.87 they don't allow religious workers 00:01:50.91\00:01:52.54 to come in and there are restrictions 00:01:52.57\00:01:54.71 on what people can do there. 00:01:54.74\00:01:56.31 So you were going into this country. 00:01:56.34\00:01:58.68 How did you feel before you went in? 00:01:58.71\00:02:01.38 I mean, were you scared? 00:02:01.42\00:02:02.82 I mean, what's, what is that feeling of? 00:02:02.85\00:02:05.59 I'm going to go. Yeah. 00:02:05.62\00:02:07.42 What motivates that? 00:02:07.46\00:02:09.16 Yeah, I think the biggest motivation 00:02:09.19\00:02:11.29 is knowing that you were accepting a call from God. 00:02:11.33\00:02:16.90 And that and another good thing 00:02:16.93\00:02:20.10 is to know that there are a many other missionaries 00:02:20.14\00:02:23.67 already working there. 00:02:23.71\00:02:25.21 So if I know that many people had... 00:02:25.24\00:02:29.54 are already there working and living with God 00:02:29.58\00:02:33.21 in such difficult circumstances. 00:02:33.25\00:02:37.29 God tells me that I can do that also. 00:02:37.32\00:02:39.89 Okay. 00:02:39.92\00:02:41.26 And there's a term that we call that one is a tentmaker 00:02:41.29\00:02:43.66 and another one is what we call Waldensian student. 00:02:43.69\00:02:45.86 Yeah. 00:02:45.89\00:02:47.23 Where somebody goes into a country 00:02:47.26\00:02:48.70 for a different purpose. 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.53 And they have a legitimate reason to be there 00:02:50.57\00:02:52.50 because they're a Christian, 00:02:52.53\00:02:53.87 they're letting their lives be the witness. 00:02:53.90\00:02:57.97 Now, what was it like? 00:02:58.01\00:03:00.14 Do you have any stories you can share 00:03:00.18\00:03:02.04 about your experiences there being careful of course, 00:03:02.08\00:03:04.71 is it possible or... 00:03:04.75\00:03:06.08 Yes, yes, I can try to remember some stories, 00:03:06.11\00:03:09.18 like as a potential missionary 00:03:09.22\00:03:13.62 in like, oh, 00:03:13.66\00:03:15.42 almost all the Christian missionaries in that country 00:03:15.46\00:03:19.63 entered as a student of the language, 00:03:19.66\00:03:23.06 so I could have to get the visa and be there legally. 00:03:23.10\00:03:26.77 And so in a place 00:03:26.80\00:03:30.11 where religion and religious people 00:03:30.14\00:03:33.07 were treated like differently, 00:03:33.11\00:03:37.65 we need to act differently. 00:03:37.68\00:03:39.41 And we know that we can find sometimes 00:03:39.45\00:03:42.65 some difficult situations on how to act. 00:03:42.68\00:03:46.52 And one day I found it difficult. 00:03:46.55\00:03:48.96 It was a bittersweet situation, a bittersweet feeling 00:03:48.99\00:03:54.26 because I was talking to a teacher 00:03:54.30\00:03:56.90 and, of course, I was there 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.27 to connect with all kinds of people 00:03:58.30\00:04:00.64 and I was trying to connect with that guy 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.54 that seemed to like me, 00:04:02.57\00:04:04.31 but and he started to show some interest on religion. 00:04:04.34\00:04:09.18 But the bittersweet feeling came 00:04:09.21\00:04:12.68 when one day when he already knew 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.68 that I was a Christian, 00:04:14.72\00:04:16.15 we were talking through the hallway after a class, 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.99 and he started to show really, like, 00:04:20.02\00:04:23.49 enthusiasm about religion and knowing the Bible. 00:04:23.53\00:04:27.66 So, but he ignoring that as a mission, 00:04:27.70\00:04:32.40 as a Christian, we need to, 00:04:32.43\00:04:34.90 you know, act under the, under covert, 00:04:34.94\00:04:40.21 he didn't know that we should not, 00:04:40.24\00:04:42.08 you know, I should hide about my religion. 00:04:42.11\00:04:45.11 So inside a secular university, 00:04:45.15\00:04:50.19 talking about religion could be very risky. 00:04:50.22\00:04:53.69 So inside me, I was really excited 00:04:53.72\00:04:55.99 that my local teacher was excited 00:04:56.02\00:04:58.89 about knowing that Christian and having access to the Bible 00:04:58.93\00:05:03.26 and knowing more about the Bible, 00:05:03.30\00:05:04.67 but at the same time, I was really, you know... 00:05:04.70\00:05:08.90 You're a bit worried. 00:05:08.94\00:05:10.27 Yeah, I was really worried 00:05:10.31\00:05:11.64 because many other employees are off the place 00:05:11.67\00:05:16.21 and other students were passing by. 00:05:16.24\00:05:18.38 So that situation could be very risky 00:05:18.41\00:05:20.22 at the same time. 00:05:20.25\00:05:21.58 Yeah. 00:05:21.62\00:05:22.95 I like what you're saying now, 00:05:22.98\00:05:24.32 because Ellen White talked about Christ's method. 00:05:24.35\00:05:25.75 How did Jesus do His ministry? 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.46 And one of the first things she says He did, 00:05:27.49\00:05:29.36 is He mingled and, you know, first of all, 00:05:29.39\00:05:32.39 you needed to be in that country to mingle. 00:05:32.43\00:05:34.60 You have a real reason to be there 00:05:34.63\00:05:36.23 and you're meeting and interacting 00:05:36.26\00:05:37.60 with people every day, 00:05:37.63\00:05:38.97 and they see your life 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.67 and they begin to sometimes ask questions. 00:05:40.70\00:05:43.97 Now, in terms of, well, first, how long were you there? 00:05:44.01\00:05:49.58 I stayed there for one year. 00:05:49.61\00:05:50.95 For one year? Okay. 00:05:50.98\00:05:52.55 And then, in terms of working 00:05:52.58\00:05:55.68 in the closed countries, 00:05:55.72\00:05:59.92 and doing that type of ministry, 00:05:59.95\00:06:03.22 you're constantly wondering, I guess, how much you can say, 00:06:03.26\00:06:08.53 who's watching, and things like that. 00:06:08.56\00:06:11.43 How do you cope with that and maybe, 00:06:11.47\00:06:13.60 what kind of reliance does prayer have 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.84 when you're in that kind of situation? 00:06:15.87\00:06:18.47 Yeah, I think sometimes you can rely only on prayer. 00:06:18.51\00:06:23.75 Because we know that we are watched by people, 00:06:23.78\00:06:28.55 by the government, 00:06:28.58\00:06:30.05 and, you know, by the police maybe, 00:06:30.09\00:06:32.85 but it's never possible for you to know 00:06:32.89\00:06:35.16 how much you are watched. 00:06:35.19\00:06:37.83 So we try to be prudent, 00:06:37.86\00:06:39.43 we try to avoid situations 00:06:39.46\00:06:40.83 that could bring some risks to us 00:06:40.86\00:06:43.57 and to the gospel and to other missionaries. 00:06:43.60\00:06:46.30 So, but at the same time, we are there to work, 00:06:46.33\00:06:49.84 we are there to bring the gospel to those people. 00:06:49.87\00:06:55.31 So sometimes, you know, 00:06:55.34\00:06:57.88 you know that you will need to talk about something 00:06:57.91\00:07:02.68 that is illegal, 00:07:02.72\00:07:04.62 you cannot proselytize, I cannot give you even, 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.32 not even a pamphlet, 00:07:07.36\00:07:08.69 a booklet on the streets that is illegal. 00:07:08.72\00:07:11.36 So it's not easy 00:07:11.39\00:07:16.16 for you to know 00:07:16.20\00:07:19.97 how far I can go on talking, 00:07:20.00\00:07:22.97 or you know about the gospel, about Jesus, 00:07:23.00\00:07:27.11 and how to balance the risks, no. 00:07:27.14\00:07:31.31 But in the end, 00:07:31.35\00:07:33.28 doing missionary work in a closed country 00:07:33.31\00:07:36.25 will always bring you risks. 00:07:36.28\00:07:38.55 And that's why we always rely on prayer above all 00:07:38.59\00:07:42.86 because you cannot avoid that. 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.29 Now, when you're talking about the world today, 00:07:45.33\00:07:48.36 one-third of the world is Christian, 00:07:48.40\00:07:49.76 two-thirds of the world is not 00:07:49.80\00:07:51.23 and some of those we cannot openly go in 00:07:51.27\00:07:54.27 and yet we have the gospel commission 00:07:54.30\00:07:56.10 to share the gospel to the entire world. 00:07:56.14\00:07:59.24 What advice would you give to somebody 00:07:59.27\00:08:01.11 who's considering any kind of mission service, 00:08:01.14\00:08:04.31 whether it is, you know, more traditional 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.31 or a volunteer or in a closed country? 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.48 So in a closed country, 00:08:14.69\00:08:18.29 if you feel called to go there, 00:08:18.33\00:08:22.70 as we already mentioned, 00:08:22.73\00:08:24.07 you will need to rely on prayer. 00:08:24.10\00:08:28.64 You will need to be sure that God is calling there. 00:08:28.67\00:08:32.67 And I like that, God is calling you, 00:08:32.71\00:08:34.88 pray and ask God, what do you want me to do? 00:08:34.91\00:08:37.58 And if He calls you to someplace like that, 00:08:37.61\00:08:41.02 then you have to prayerfully consider 00:08:41.05\00:08:42.42 whether you will answer. 00:08:42.45\00:08:43.79 We're out of time. 00:08:43.82\00:08:45.15 But thank you very much for joining us. 00:08:45.19\00:08:46.72 Thank you. 00:08:46.76\00:08:48.09 For Mission 360, I'm Rick Kajiura. 00:08:48.12\00:08:49.79 And now back to Gary Krause. 00:08:49.82\00:08:53.03 Next up we traveled to Romania to visit a unique church plant. 00:08:53.06\00:08:57.70 When a friend asked me for a ride, 00:08:57.73\00:08:59.77 something impressed me 00:08:59.80\00:09:01.14 that I should bring my family along. 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.90 While we were driving, a strong storm started 00:09:02.94\00:09:05.71 that caused our wooden church building 00:09:05.74\00:09:07.18 to collapse on top of my house. 00:09:07.21\00:09:09.01 We thanked God 00:09:09.04\00:09:10.38 that although our new Adventist Church collapsed. 00:09:10.41\00:09:12.51 By God's protection, no one was harmed. 00:09:12.55\00:09:15.38 And just a few years ago, I was not an Adventist. 00:09:15.42\00:09:19.32 I lived in an older house on this property 00:09:19.35\00:09:21.32 that sits at the main intersection in town. 00:09:21.36\00:09:24.26 In my community, there were some 00:09:24.29\00:09:25.63 who struggled to find a hot meal in the winter. 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.26 When Adventists first came, 00:09:28.30\00:09:29.86 they brought food and compassion. 00:09:29.90\00:09:32.43 A warm bowl of soup can be the perfect way 00:09:32.47\00:09:34.70 into someone's heart. 00:09:34.74\00:09:36.17 They parked a shipping container in my yard 00:09:36.20\00:09:38.44 where they could serve food and connect with our people. 00:09:38.47\00:09:41.18 Many of us felt they sincerely cared. 00:09:41.21\00:09:43.41 So we listened to Bible stories that were filled with hope. 00:09:43.45\00:09:46.82 Through their loving service, 00:09:46.85\00:09:48.18 this group of Adventists won our hearts 00:09:48.22\00:09:50.15 and we trusted them. 00:09:50.19\00:09:52.22 In time, some of us were baptized 00:09:52.25\00:09:54.36 and we built a wooden church next to my house. 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.49 This is my house 00:10:00.30\00:10:01.63 where the church plant activities happened 00:10:01.66\00:10:03.40 over the last 10 years. 00:10:03.43\00:10:05.30 This is the foundation for the church 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.20 we want it to build. 00:10:07.24\00:10:08.67 Unfortunately it didn't last 00:10:08.70\00:10:10.34 because it was destroyed during the storm. 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.01 Over there we had a shipping container. 00:10:13.04\00:10:15.58 From it, we served hot meals during the winter 00:10:15.61\00:10:17.81 for four to five years. 00:10:17.85\00:10:19.68 In the beginning, 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.05 most of the attendees were not Adventists. 00:10:21.08\00:10:23.52 This is still somewhat true today. 00:10:23.55\00:10:25.65 Only about half of the people who come for Sabbath services 00:10:25.69\00:10:28.36 are baptized members. 00:10:28.39\00:10:30.79 The other half come because they have seen 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.59 how Seventh-day Adventists are committed 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.46 to the peace and well-being of this community. 00:10:34.50\00:10:37.77 This active church also connects with young minds. 00:10:37.80\00:10:41.17 Every week, the church takes in some 200 children 00:10:41.20\00:10:44.44 for after school care and tutoring. 00:10:44.47\00:10:46.57 The children are served a daily meal. 00:10:46.61\00:10:48.91 Many parents and children benefit from this free service 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.38 provided by volunteers from the church 00:10:51.41\00:10:53.62 and from the community. 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.85 The children are doing better in school 00:10:56.89\00:10:58.95 because of the activities of this church. 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.69 The government school principal has expressed his gratitude 00:11:01.72\00:11:04.69 to the Adventist Church, even at public events. 00:11:04.73\00:11:09.13 We hope everyone will come to know God. 00:11:09.16\00:11:11.83 We make public invitations 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.27 for those who want to know more about us. 00:11:13.30\00:11:16.10 We organize small groups to discuss the Bible with those 00:11:16.14\00:11:19.61 who are interested. 00:11:19.64\00:11:21.14 I like these activities. 00:11:21.18\00:11:22.84 We are following Jesus' method for building relationships, 00:11:22.88\00:11:26.68 identifying needs, and trying to help people, 00:11:26.72\00:11:30.09 then we're guiding them to God. 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.59 I'm a builder by profession, 00:11:33.62\00:11:35.39 and after the wooden church collapsed, 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.56 we dreamed of building God a new house for worship. 00:11:37.59\00:11:40.73 Miraculously, God intervened 00:11:40.76\00:11:42.83 to give us the land and the funds. 00:11:42.86\00:11:45.17 Currently 20 people are studying the Bible, 00:11:45.20\00:11:47.64 and two of them are ready for baptism. 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.57 We work hard to help those in need. 00:11:50.61\00:11:52.61 In my spare time, 00:11:52.64\00:11:53.98 I assist the less privileged to have their own house. 00:11:54.01\00:11:58.25 I hope someday they will see the love of God through me, 00:11:58.28\00:12:01.65 as we saw God's love through the Adventists. 00:12:01.68\00:12:04.65 I want to thank the volunteer pioneers 00:12:04.69\00:12:07.42 and church planters who came here. 00:12:07.46\00:12:09.52 Thank you so much for joining us 00:12:25.74\00:12:27.24 on today's program, 00:12:27.28\00:12:28.61 and I hope that you've been inspired 00:12:28.64\00:12:30.38 and challenged by our 360-degree view of mission 00:12:30.41\00:12:34.12 around the world. 00:12:34.15\00:12:35.52 We've traveled to the hard to reach areas of the Amazon. 00:12:35.55\00:12:39.72 We've seen church planting in Romania. 00:12:39.75\00:12:42.42 We've looked at mission right here in Tokyo 00:12:42.46\00:12:45.33 and around the world today, 00:12:45.36\00:12:46.90 we face many, many mission challenges. 00:12:46.93\00:12:49.46 The urban city such as Tokyo 00:12:49.50\00:12:51.53 loom large in more ways than one. 00:12:51.57\00:12:53.84 But I want to thank you so much 00:12:53.87\00:12:55.84 for your continuing support of Adventist Mission. 00:12:55.87\00:12:59.11 Every time you pray for mission, 00:12:59.14\00:13:00.48 every time you give a donation to global mission, 00:13:00.51\00:13:03.45 or give your mission offerings, you are making a difference. 00:13:03.48\00:13:06.41 Thank you for your personal involvement. 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.88 And I hope that you can find ways 00:13:08.92\00:13:11.09 to share the good news of Adventist Mission 00:13:11.12\00:13:14.09 with your friends, your family with people at church. 00:13:14.12\00:13:17.29 If you want
