Welcome back to Dublin 00:00:19.61\00:00:20.95 and more specifically to Phoenix Park. 00:00:20.98\00:00:23.99 This is a huge space, it was established in 1662. 00:00:24.02\00:00:28.32 It's home to the nation's president. 00:00:28.36\00:00:30.53 And it's the largest enclosed space of any park 00:00:30.56\00:00:34.76 in any of the European capitals. 00:00:34.80\00:00:36.67 It's five times larger than London's Hyde Park. 00:00:36.70\00:00:40.10 Well, next up we traveled to Silver Spring, Maryland. 00:00:40.14\00:00:43.67 Is it possible to continue thinking biblically, 00:00:43.71\00:00:48.88 even as you work across cultures. 00:00:48.91\00:00:53.48 I am Oscar Osindo. 00:00:53.52\00:00:55.98 I work for the Institute of World Mission. 00:00:56.02\00:00:58.95 Our responsibility is to help missionaries 00:00:58.99\00:01:03.02 that work overseas or work across cultures, 00:01:03.06\00:01:06.59 to be able to work effectively. 00:01:06.63\00:01:12.93 We are the people that God has called 00:01:12.97\00:01:16.20 to share the good news of the gospel 00:01:16.24\00:01:19.27 as it is in the Bible, 00:01:19.31\00:01:23.51 but as we take the Bible message 00:01:23.55\00:01:26.95 across cultures, 00:01:26.98\00:01:28.65 we meet obstacles because as we have mentioned 00:01:28.68\00:01:32.15 about culture, people read, 00:01:32.19\00:01:36.32 even understand from their cultural lenses. 00:01:36.36\00:01:41.23 That's why they do. 00:01:41.26\00:01:42.60 For example, 00:01:42.63\00:01:44.97 a missionary couple went to a place 00:01:45.00\00:01:49.74 where they were posted to work or sent to work. 00:01:49.77\00:01:53.17 And they were surprised the first Sabbath worship 00:01:53.21\00:01:58.38 that they attended. 00:01:58.41\00:02:00.22 They observed church members 00:02:00.25\00:02:04.02 greeting and kissing one another across gender even, 00:02:04.05\00:02:10.86 and they were so surprised 00:02:10.89\00:02:12.23 and so when they inquired to know 00:02:12.26\00:02:15.10 why these church members were doing so. 00:02:15.13\00:02:19.67 They were informed that one of the church elders 00:02:19.70\00:02:24.04 read in Romans, 00:02:24.07\00:02:26.14 Romans 16:16 00:02:26.17\00:02:31.21 that believers should kiss one another. 00:02:31.25\00:02:36.52 And so their response was, 00:02:36.55\00:02:40.09 they are observing a gospel command 00:02:40.12\00:02:44.03 of kissing one another. 00:02:44.06\00:02:46.96 This is just an example of how the Bible 00:02:47.00\00:02:51.10 is used and misused as people interact with the Bible from 00:02:51.13\00:02:57.84 their own social location, 00:02:57.87\00:03:00.91 from their own context through their own worldview, 00:03:00.94\00:03:05.91 that's how they see it. 00:03:05.95\00:03:08.02 These are some of the challenges 00:03:08.05\00:03:12.55 as a missionary you might come across. 00:03:12.59\00:03:18.76 How do you take this good news across culture? 00:03:18.79\00:03:25.03 It is stated that 00:03:25.07\00:03:27.64 there are three responses to sin. 00:03:27.67\00:03:31.51 Fear power cultures, 00:03:31.54\00:03:36.75 shame honor cultures, 00:03:36.78\00:03:39.75 guilt innocence cultures. 00:03:39.78\00:03:43.72 These are three responses to sin. 00:03:43.75\00:03:45.65 In the fear power, 00:03:45.69\00:03:48.09 these are cultures that live in fear, 00:03:48.12\00:03:50.59 fear of the unseen, fear of the unknown. 00:03:50.63\00:03:55.00 What do they need? 00:03:55.03\00:03:56.36 They need power to overcome, they need Jesus Christ, 00:03:56.40\00:04:01.57 they need a gospel 00:04:01.60\00:04:03.61 that will empower them to overcome their fear. 00:04:03.64\00:04:07.81 In the fear power context, for example, 00:04:07.84\00:04:11.68 we know that malaria 00:04:11.71\00:04:16.12 is caused by mosquito bites 00:04:16.15\00:04:20.72 that when we know, but in the fear power, 00:04:20.76\00:04:24.93 the question would be who sent the mosquito? 00:04:24.96\00:04:30.13 It's not what causes, but who? 00:04:30.17\00:04:33.13 That's the fear power. 00:04:33.17\00:04:35.07 Now in the shame honor culture, 00:04:35.10\00:04:40.08 people aspire for honor. 00:04:40.11\00:04:43.35 They avoid shame at all costs. 00:04:43.38\00:04:46.82 So what kind of gospel they want. 00:04:46.85\00:04:48.98 The gospel needs to be related to them 00:04:49.02\00:04:52.62 in a way that it covers the shame. 00:04:52.65\00:04:57.36 In the guilt innocence culture, it's about right and wrong. 00:04:57.39\00:05:03.06 So how can I, you know, in the guilt innocence culture, 00:05:03.10\00:05:10.01 how can I do away with the wrong? 00:05:10.04\00:05:12.51 How can I be declared right? 00:05:12.54\00:05:16.24 That's their concern. 00:05:16.28\00:05:17.91 So the gospel is understood in those terms. 00:05:17.95\00:05:21.42 And so as we relate the Bible, the Word of God, 00:05:21.45\00:05:25.85 across cultures, 00:05:25.89\00:05:27.69 we need to be aware that we speak to people 00:05:27.72\00:05:30.96 in ways that they will understand 00:05:30.99\00:05:33.23 in ways that the Bible will make sense 00:05:33.26\00:05:36.20 in their own cultural framework. 00:05:36.23\00:05:40.67 These are some of the things and many others 00:05:40.70\00:05:44.21 that we at the institute are concerned about, 00:05:44.24\00:05:48.01 how do we equip you? 00:05:48.04\00:05:49.38 How do we make you aware? 00:05:49.41\00:05:50.91 How do we prepare you? 00:05:50.95\00:05:53.31 And so missionaries come together bless us 00:05:53.35\00:05:56.55 and we have three weeks of learning together 00:05:56.58\00:06:02.26 to know how to process through these challenges. 00:06:02.29\00:06:07.60 And so, we invite you 00:06:07.63\00:06:13.80 to come to our Next Mission Institute 00:06:13.84\00:06:17.74 so that together, 00:06:17.77\00:06:19.71 we can share the unique Adventist message 00:06:19.74\00:06:24.25 to the whole world. 00:06:24.28\00:06:26.35 We look forward to seeing you at the Next Mission Institute. 00:06:26.38\00:06:31.75 Next up, we travel to Toronto, Canada, 00:06:48.77\00:06:51.71 to see work being done 00:06:51.74\00:06:53.17 among an often neglected group of people. 00:06:53.21\00:06:55.88 Neena does what most dog owners do. 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.89 She takes her dog out for a walk every day 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.30 to enjoy the outside air, 00:07:15.33\00:07:17.30 but things are a little different for Neena. 00:07:17.33\00:07:20.27 She relies on Fargo to get her out the door 00:07:20.30\00:07:23.41 and around the neighborhood safely. 00:07:23.44\00:07:25.67 He's her guide dog, 00:07:25.71\00:07:27.28 helping Neena navigate the streets. 00:07:27.31\00:07:29.61 Neena and her husband, Kevin, are both blind, 00:07:29.64\00:07:33.08 living in a Toronto high rise apartment building. 00:07:33.11\00:07:36.32 This Canadian couple lives in many ways 00:07:36.35\00:07:38.72 just like anyone else would. 00:07:38.75\00:07:40.69 They cook, clean, and do household tasks. 00:07:40.72\00:07:44.13 Neena runs an online business 00:07:44.16\00:07:45.93 selling handmade knitted clothing, 00:07:45.96\00:07:48.03 homemade soaps, and other accessories. 00:07:48.06\00:07:50.70 Each of these things are an artistic outlet for me. 00:07:50.73\00:07:54.24 I do the store 00:07:54.27\00:07:56.37 because I like to have fun with crafts. 00:07:56.40\00:07:59.27 Neena and Kevin met at Camp Frenda, 00:07:59.31\00:08:01.61 an Adventist summer camp that opens its doors 00:08:01.64\00:08:04.15 to the blind community for one week each year. 00:08:04.18\00:08:06.51 It was sponsored 00:08:06.55\00:08:07.88 by Christian Record Services at the time. 00:08:07.92\00:08:10.02 Neena and Kevin's love for Jesus grew 00:08:10.05\00:08:12.82 and they both were baptized. 00:08:12.85\00:08:14.96 During the same time, 00:08:14.99\00:08:16.39 they fell in love and eventually got married. 00:08:16.42\00:08:19.36 Despite becoming part of a church family, 00:08:19.39\00:08:21.63 the reality of their daily challenges 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.87 still exist. 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.33 I think a lot of people just don't know how to relate to us 00:08:25.37\00:08:27.64 and a lot of people are afraid to even talk to us. 00:08:27.67\00:08:30.31 And so sometimes they just don't know 00:08:30.34\00:08:32.44 how to approach us as people, 00:08:32.47\00:08:34.54 and a lot of times we feel left out. 00:08:34.58\00:08:38.11 In 2007, they were part of the founding team 00:08:38.15\00:08:40.88 to start a new Adventist congregation 00:08:40.92\00:08:43.28 with the Ontario Conference. 00:08:43.32\00:08:45.42 They rented a conference room 00:08:45.45\00:08:46.79 in a local hotel in Scarborough, 00:08:46.82\00:08:48.46 a suburb of Toronto, and began meeting once a month. 00:08:48.49\00:08:52.36 This gathering came to be known as Hope Vision Fellowship 00:08:52.39\00:08:56.43 and was designed to welcome the blind community. 00:08:56.46\00:08:59.53 Momentum built over the years and they formed a core group, 00:08:59.57\00:09:03.20 with new visitors coming through the doors regularly. 00:09:03.24\00:09:06.17 There's a lot of hopelessness throughout the blind community. 00:09:06.21\00:09:11.31 I like the name of our church, Hope Vision Fellowship. 00:09:11.35\00:09:14.72 And that's basically what we are. 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.55 We hope and we do have a vision, 00:09:16.58\00:09:18.99 and our vision is to see blind people get saved 00:09:19.02\00:09:21.56 and the blind people come to know Jesus Christ 00:09:21.59\00:09:24.99 and find healing and hope through His wonderful grace. 00:09:25.03\00:09:28.96 In 2016, Global Mission helped to support this group, 00:09:29.00\00:09:33.10 and that same year Hope Vision Fellowship 00:09:33.13\00:09:36.17 was recognized as the first Adventist Church 00:09:36.20\00:09:38.97 for the visually impaired in the North American Division. 00:09:39.01\00:09:42.11 Since then, they've started meeting 00:09:42.14\00:09:43.55 in their own church building, 00:09:43.58\00:09:45.18 opening the door for more possibilities. 00:09:45.21\00:09:47.92 Members like Kevin and Neena are actively involved 00:09:47.95\00:09:50.95 in sharing Jesus' love with the blind community. 00:09:50.99\00:09:54.09 There are a lot of blind people that really need this hope 00:09:54.12\00:09:57.53 and they need this nice time away from the stuff 00:09:57.56\00:10:01.53 that they deal with every day. 00:10:01.56\00:10:03.06 And they need sort of a slight refuge. 00:10:03.10\00:10:05.97 That's my heart where I wanna make people 00:10:06.00\00:10:08.97 help them feel that way, like they matter. 00:10:09.00\00:10:12.57 Most of the people who attend are not Adventist, 00:10:12.61\00:10:15.14 but come because they feel safe here. 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.55 They come from different religions 00:10:17.58\00:10:19.41 and socioeconomic backgrounds. 00:10:19.45\00:10:21.75 This congregation is not just focused 00:10:21.78\00:10:24.09 on meeting the spiritual needs of its community, 00:10:24.12\00:10:26.79 they also are aware of the physical needs. 00:10:26.82\00:10:29.89 Pat, one of the founding members, 00:10:29.92\00:10:32.19 makes sure that people are well taken care of 00:10:32.23\00:10:34.93 by creating food care packages for people to take home. 00:10:34.96\00:10:38.33 As most of them can't afford 00:10:38.37\00:10:41.40 some of the basic necessities of life, 00:10:41.44\00:10:43.77 let alone a little bit extra and some of them 00:10:43.81\00:10:46.98 have to rely on food banks anyway. 00:10:47.01\00:10:48.91 So this is one of our reaches as well. 00:10:48.94\00:10:51.71 I mean, this is sometimes 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.31 the only way of getting their food. 00:10:53.35\00:10:54.82 Knowing some of the stories of some of the ones 00:10:54.85\00:10:57.35 going to actual food banks, they get pushed to the back, 00:10:57.39\00:11:01.62 they can't see, they don't know where they are. 00:11:01.66\00:11:04.13 And the one time I was helping a girl clean out her cupboard. 00:11:04.16\00:11:08.76 She had 25 cans of expired spaghetti sauce 00:11:08.80\00:11:13.90 and no spaghetti. 00:11:13.94\00:11:17.07 So this is just helping. 00:11:17.11\00:11:19.74 Thanks to your prayers 00:11:19.77\00:11:21.44 and contribution to Global Mission, 00:11:21.48\00:11:23.28 churches like this are planted in new areas 00:11:23.31\00:11:26.41 and among unreached people groups. 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.52 I wanna thank God from the bottom of my heart 00:11:28.55\00:11:31.19 for the Adventist Church. 00:11:31.22\00:11:33.92 It was through the Adventist Church 00:11:33.96\00:11:36.42 that I found Jesus, 00:11:36.46\00:11:38.46 it was through the Adventist Church 00:11:38.49\00:11:40.03 that I experienced His love, 00:11:40.06\00:11:42.53 and it's through the Adventist Church's help 00:11:42.56\00:11:45.43 and that made me the man I am today. 00:11:45.47\00:11:47.94 Thank you for supporting Global Mission. 00:11:47.97\00:11:50.27 Well, thank you so much for joining us on Mission 360. 00:12:18.77\00:12:21.87 And I hope that you've been challenged 00:12:21.90\00:12:23.67 and inspired by what you've seen and heard. 00:12:23.71\00:12:26.68 I hope that you've enjoyed our 360-degree view of mission, 00:12:26.71\00:12:30.38 including the mobile center of influence in Hungary, 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.85 the work among blind people in Toronto. 00:12:33.88\00:12:36.69 You know, there are just so many needs 00:12:36.72\00:12:38.25 around the world today. 00:12:38.29\00:12:39.82 And particularly as we see 00:12:39.85\00:12:41.19 our big mission field of the cities, 00:12:41.22\00:12:43.02 we see tremendous challenges, 00:12:43.06\00:12:44.83 but I wanna thank you so much 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.36 for your continuing support for mission, 00:12:46.39\00:12:48.83 through your prayers, 00:12:48.86\00:12:50.20 through your finances because it's your donations, 00:12:50.23\00:12:52.47 it's your prayers, it's your involvement 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.04 that make it possible for us to start centers of influence 00:12:54.07\00:12:57.51 in urban areas around the world. 00:12:57.54\00:12:59.24 It makes it possible for us 00:12:59.27\00:13:00.61 to plant new groups of believers 00:13:00.64\00:13:02.38 among new people groups. 00:13:02.41\00:13:04.11 Well, for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:13:04.15\00:13:06.88 And I hope that you can join me next time 00:13:06.92\00:13:08.88 right here on Mission 360. 00:13:08.92\00:13:11.52
