An Urban Center of Influence on wheels in Hungary, 00:00:23.89\00:00:27.36 work among the blind in Toronto, Canada, 00:00:27.39\00:00:30.29 and mission right here in Ireland, 00:00:30.33\00:00:32.26 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:32.29\00:00:34.73 Hello, and welcome to Mission 360. 00:01:21.94\00:01:24.05 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:24.08\00:01:25.41 Today's program is coming to you from Dublin, Ireland. 00:01:25.45\00:01:28.38 And I am standing in Trinity College Dublin. 00:01:28.42\00:01:31.85 And this is a... 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.22 As you can see a historic place. 00:01:33.25\00:01:35.26 And tourists come from all over the world 00:01:35.29\00:01:37.56 to see this attraction, 00:01:37.59\00:01:39.23 but one of the things 00:01:39.26\00:01:40.60 that really catches their attention 00:01:40.63\00:01:41.96 is The Book of Kells. 00:01:42.00\00:01:43.33 This is a copy of the New Testament gospels 00:01:43.37\00:01:46.43 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, 00:01:46.47\00:01:48.20 beautifully illustrated and produced 00:01:48.24\00:01:50.04 by Celtic monks back in the 800s. 00:01:50.07\00:01:53.51 So it's perhaps the most famous still in existence, 00:01:53.54\00:01:57.25 medieval document. 00:01:57.28\00:01:59.01 Well, on today's program, we're going to be looking 00:01:59.05\00:02:00.72 at mission right here in Ireland, 00:02:00.75\00:02:02.52 but first up, let's visit a health fan in Hungary. 00:02:02.55\00:02:06.19 Adventists are getting noticed 00:02:11.06\00:02:12.76 at one of Hungary's biggest music festivals. 00:02:12.79\00:02:15.86 It's a little out of the ordinary, 00:02:15.90\00:02:17.53 but offering to paint designs has attracted concert-goers 00:02:17.57\00:02:20.74 to these local church members' booths. 00:02:20.77\00:02:23.17 It's important to find something 00:02:23.20\00:02:24.67 people will be excited about. 00:02:24.71\00:02:26.68 Don't worry, though, the paint is washable. 00:02:26.71\00:02:29.88 They're also offering temporary hair coloring, lemonade, 00:02:29.91\00:02:33.01 and, of course, prayer. 00:02:33.05\00:02:35.85 At events like this, 00:02:35.88\00:02:37.22 church members have the opportunity 00:02:37.25\00:02:38.59 to invite people to visit 00:02:38.62\00:02:39.95 a nearby Urban Center of Influence. 00:02:39.99\00:02:42.19 Tunderevesz came to this 00:02:46.90\00:02:49.06 Global Mission Urban Center of Influence in Miskolc, 00:02:49.10\00:02:51.97 hoping for relief from her health issues. 00:02:52.00\00:02:54.67 She was warmly greeted by the staff 00:02:54.70\00:02:56.94 and after some evaluation, 00:02:56.97\00:02:58.64 they recommended lifestyle changes 00:02:58.67\00:03:00.18 and natural treatments offered at the center. 00:03:00.21\00:03:02.98 Over time, her health improved and now she can't imagine 00:03:03.01\00:03:06.58 what life would be like if she hadn't come here, 00:03:06.61\00:03:09.18 not just for her physical health 00:03:09.22\00:03:10.79 but also mentally and socially. 00:03:10.82\00:03:12.55 I actually developed friendships 00:03:14.56\00:03:16.69 with the people working here. 00:03:16.73\00:03:18.96 It's very important to have this kind of community. 00:03:18.99\00:03:22.70 I learned a lot here 00:03:22.73\00:03:24.07 and it was such 00:03:24.10\00:03:25.43 a community-building experience. 00:03:25.47\00:03:28.60 Although these services 00:03:28.64\00:03:29.97 are offered with no strings attached, 00:03:30.01\00:03:31.81 sometimes these interactions 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.38 lead to more than just health improvements. 00:03:33.41\00:03:35.64 Since I started coming here, 00:03:35.68\00:03:37.08 I've applied to attend an Adventist health camp 00:03:37.11\00:03:39.75 in the summer and I've been taking Bible studies. 00:03:39.78\00:03:42.72 An Adventist summer camp opens for a week each summer. 00:03:42.75\00:03:46.52 People come from all over Hungary to make new friends 00:03:46.55\00:03:49.36 and participate in outdoor activities. 00:03:49.39\00:03:51.76 Most have heard about the camp 00:03:51.79\00:03:53.13 through various urban centers of influence 00:03:53.16\00:03:55.06 or from their Adventist friends. 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.07 This is a lifestyle camp. 00:03:57.10\00:03:58.53 We are doing lifestyle evangelism. 00:03:58.57\00:04:01.37 That means we invite friends and people 00:04:01.40\00:04:04.51 who are not in contact with Adventist Church. 00:04:04.54\00:04:08.34 We have here about 200 people, 00:04:08.38\00:04:11.71 most of them are not Adventist people. 00:04:11.75\00:04:14.98 And they're invited 00:04:15.02\00:04:16.35 just because we have hiking programs, 00:04:16.38\00:04:19.45 we have cycling, and different sports programs, 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.82 and they're attracted to these programs. 00:04:22.86\00:04:25.13 If we invite somebody to our local church, 00:04:25.16\00:04:27.00 maybe nobody would come, 00:04:27.03\00:04:28.36 at least in this part of Europe, 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.50 but if we invite them to participate 00:04:30.53\00:04:33.54 in a program like this, they would like to come 00:04:33.57\00:04:37.07 'cause they like to be healthy, they like to have new friends. 00:04:37.11\00:04:40.98 And this way, this is a non-threatening way 00:04:41.01\00:04:44.71 to connect with them 00:04:44.75\00:04:46.58 and to connect them with Jesus Christ 00:04:46.61\00:04:49.82 and to the Adventist Church. 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.99 The camp is a social place 00:04:52.02\00:04:53.76 where people can bond together in nature. 00:04:53.79\00:04:56.19 There are seminars and discussions about health 00:04:56.22\00:04:58.36 and religious topics that attract many of the attendees. 00:04:58.39\00:05:02.00 They're provided healthy meals that feature bread 00:05:02.03\00:05:04.30 from the camp's bakery. 00:05:04.33\00:05:05.70 At the end of the week, many people go home 00:05:05.73\00:05:08.17 feeling inspired by the retreat, 00:05:08.20\00:05:10.34 and some even decide to take Bible studies 00:05:10.37\00:05:12.61 or volunteer at their local urban center of influence. 00:05:12.64\00:05:15.54 For those who may not live near an urban center of influence, 00:05:20.32\00:05:23.42 there is another solution. 00:05:23.45\00:05:25.35 Hungarian church leaders in the Duna Conference 00:05:25.39\00:05:28.02 want to meet people where they are, 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.29 so they created a fully outfitted ministry caravan. 00:05:30.33\00:05:34.06 After purchasing a van and trailer, 00:05:34.10\00:05:36.33 Adventist professionals designed 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.20 and renovated the interior of the trailer 00:05:38.23\00:05:40.47 to be a modern mobile center of influence. 00:05:40.50\00:05:43.74 The Duna Conference is made up of 54 churches, 00:05:43.77\00:05:46.64 so each church has the opportunity 00:05:46.68\00:05:48.54 to invite the van to their town for one weekend each year. 00:05:48.58\00:05:52.21 The ministry is operated by volunteers, 00:05:52.25\00:05:54.68 who work closely with the local members who invited them, 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.39 to determine what type of program 00:05:57.42\00:05:59.19 would be appreciated by the community. 00:05:59.22\00:06:01.99 Usually, the van is parked in a central, 00:06:02.02\00:06:04.03 prominent part of town. 00:06:04.06\00:06:05.73 They offer health expos, children's programs, 00:06:05.76\00:06:08.20 cooking classes, a Christian film club, 00:06:08.23\00:06:10.77 and personal counseling. 00:06:10.80\00:06:12.47 The programs of the mobile center of influence 00:06:12.50\00:06:15.04 have to be flexible to meet the changing needs of people 00:06:15.07\00:06:17.57 in towns and cities. 00:06:17.61\00:06:19.27 This van allows Adventists 00:06:19.31\00:06:21.11 to connect with people in the community 00:06:21.14\00:06:22.88 and develop a long-term relationship. 00:06:22.91\00:06:26.01 Your prayers and giving to Global Mission 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.15 have helped these ministries become a reality. 00:06:28.18\00:06:31.52 Please continue to pray 00:06:31.55\00:06:33.05 and consider what you can give to this cause. 00:06:33.09\00:06:36.09 Thank you for supporting Global Mission. 00:06:36.12\00:06:38.29 My guest is Heather, and she is the manager 00:07:00.82\00:07:03.82 of the center of influence across the street, 00:07:03.85\00:07:06.45 where you can see the live life to the fullest sign. 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.36 Heather, thanks so much for joining us. 00:07:09.39\00:07:11.03 Thank you. 00:07:11.06\00:07:12.39 You're managing this center, 00:07:12.43\00:07:13.76 could you describe where we are, 00:07:13.80\00:07:16.70 and maybe a little bit of its background? 00:07:16.73\00:07:18.87 Okay, we're in the prime area in Dublin. 00:07:18.90\00:07:21.74 We're just right in the city center, 00:07:21.77\00:07:24.14 like five minutes takes us right in to where everybody is. 00:07:24.17\00:07:28.14 We're on a real busy road here. 00:07:28.18\00:07:30.15 Lots of people passing by all the time. 00:07:30.18\00:07:32.81 And this is our center of influence. 00:07:32.85\00:07:34.98 And it opened just over four years ago, 00:07:35.02\00:07:37.55 and at that stage it was purely 00:07:37.59\00:07:40.02 based on the vegetarian cookery classes all 00:07:40.06\00:07:45.23 and very much healthiest activities. 00:07:45.26\00:07:48.00 And since then, we've expanded on that. 00:07:48.03\00:07:50.53 And we realized that while working in Dublin here, 00:07:50.57\00:07:54.30 a lot of people are lonely 00:07:54.34\00:07:56.04 and it is one of the major mental health issues 00:07:56.07\00:08:00.21 that are hitting people here in Ireland is loneliness. 00:08:00.24\00:08:03.31 So we started looking at how can we create an environment 00:08:03.35\00:08:07.22 where people will find friendship, 00:08:07.25\00:08:09.18 and in the same way 00:08:09.22\00:08:10.55 that they will find the friend of Jesus Christ. 00:08:10.59\00:08:14.12 And the center has, as I said, 00:08:14.16\00:08:18.86 been running for just over four years. 00:08:18.89\00:08:21.00 And in that time, we have built on the activity. 00:08:21.03\00:08:24.50 So we now have a seniors' club and that another group 00:08:24.53\00:08:28.27 and we run a vegetarian cookery class 00:08:28.30\00:08:31.71 and which is very, very popular. 00:08:31.74\00:08:33.78 People love our cookery class. 00:08:33.81\00:08:36.34 And we run health talks, depression recovery, 00:08:36.38\00:08:40.95 we are in the process 00:08:40.98\00:08:42.45 of trying to set up a parent and toddler group. 00:08:42.48\00:08:45.09 Wonderful. Terrific. 00:08:45.12\00:08:47.19 Now apart from you who else helps out with the center? 00:08:47.22\00:08:51.96 We have volunteers from our church 00:08:51.99\00:08:54.20 who will volunteer in different activities. 00:08:54.23\00:08:57.63 We have a lovely core group of people 00:08:57.67\00:08:59.63 who are very dedicated to the Christian center 00:08:59.67\00:09:02.47 and have been from the very beginning. 00:09:02.50\00:09:04.57 And recently we have and had been joined 00:09:04.61\00:09:08.74 by student missionary Hannah 00:09:08.78\00:09:11.21 who has come from Australia to help us in our project here. 00:09:11.25\00:09:15.02 Fantastic. 00:09:15.05\00:09:16.38 Now the main Cuisle, give me the background to that? 00:09:16.42\00:09:19.62 Cuisle is the Irish word for heartbeats. 00:09:19.65\00:09:23.46 And when the name was picked, 00:09:23.49\00:09:25.86 and they wanted the center to be the heartbeat 00:09:25.89\00:09:28.86 of the community here in Ranelagh 00:09:28.90\00:09:30.90 and where the church is based, 00:09:30.93\00:09:32.43 so they thought that was a very appropriate name 00:09:32.47\00:09:34.47 and obviously with being in Ireland, picking an Irish name. 00:09:34.50\00:09:38.11 Yeah. It's very relevant. 00:09:38.14\00:09:40.08 Yeah, I like that. 00:09:40.11\00:09:41.64 So you get a lot of foot traffic past here. 00:09:41.68\00:09:44.25 People walking, you get a lot of cars. 00:09:44.28\00:09:46.41 The people who come to the center, 00:09:46.45\00:09:49.35 do they live here in the community? 00:09:49.38\00:09:51.85 Yes, the majority of people who come in here are regulars. 00:09:51.89\00:09:55.12 All live around, right here in Ranelagh 00:09:55.16\00:09:58.23 and very rarely we will get somebody 00:09:58.26\00:10:02.13 who is from outside around here, 00:10:02.16\00:10:04.07 but the majority are people 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.63 who live close to the center here 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.44 walking past here every day, 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.37 and who have been interested in what is going on 00:10:09.40\00:10:12.44 within our center and within our church. 00:10:12.47\00:10:14.94 Now do you find that 00:10:14.98\00:10:16.41 there's a little bit of suspicion 00:10:16.44\00:10:18.01 in the community about the center 00:10:18.05\00:10:19.61 because Seventh-day Adventist not well-known in Ireland. 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.75 What sort of reaction do you get? 00:10:22.78\00:10:25.02 It's varied so people would be suspicious about coming in 00:10:25.05\00:10:29.09 and because people really don't know 00:10:29.12\00:10:31.96 what Seventh-day Adventist is. 00:10:31.99\00:10:34.70 And I have had one lady say to me 00:10:34.73\00:10:37.03 that she comes regularly she said, 00:10:37.07\00:10:39.13 and her friends when she told her friends, 00:10:39.17\00:10:41.27 she was coming to another group, 00:10:41.30\00:10:43.14 that she shouldn't come here 00:10:43.17\00:10:45.61 because we will just want to grab her and keep her. 00:10:45.64\00:10:48.11 Okay. 00:10:48.14\00:10:49.48 And she said, she just tells her friends 00:10:49.51\00:10:51.28 that's not what she experiences here. 00:10:51.31\00:10:52.95 She experiences love, friendship, and acceptance, 00:10:52.98\00:10:55.85 and that we're not and pushing an agenda on her. 00:10:55.88\00:10:59.82 Right. 00:10:59.85\00:11:01.19 So it's not like you're being aggressive in any way. 00:11:01.22\00:11:03.46 You know, you're building bridges with the community. 00:11:03.49\00:11:05.16 Yeah. 00:11:05.19\00:11:06.53 Because I think when we looked at the center of influence, 00:11:06.56\00:11:10.30 people want to belong before they believe. 00:11:10.33\00:11:12.87 And in order for them to belong, 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.20 we have to create friendships, 00:11:15.24\00:11:18.97 we have to create relationships. 00:11:19.01\00:11:21.04 And sometimes I think we get that the wrong way around. 00:11:21.08\00:11:24.01 We want them to believe before they belong. 00:11:24.05\00:11:27.12 And my experience here is people just want to belong, 00:11:27.15\00:11:30.52 they want friendship, they want and after that, 00:11:30.55\00:11:33.49 everything else just falls into place. 00:11:33.52\00:11:35.76 Fantastic. 00:11:35.79\00:11:37.13 Can you share a story of someone 00:11:37.16\00:11:38.73 who you've met through the center? 00:11:38.76\00:11:40.23 Yeah. 00:11:40.26\00:11:41.60 And I think there was the lady 00:11:41.63\00:11:44.53 who came to different activities. 00:11:44.57\00:11:47.87 And she was very reluctant 00:11:47.90\00:11:49.74 when 'cause we take people's contact details 00:11:49.77\00:11:52.41 so that we can keep them up to date on what's happening. 00:11:52.44\00:11:54.74 And she was very reluctant to give me her details. 00:11:54.78\00:11:57.11 She was like, "I'll just come when I want to come in." 00:11:57.15\00:12:00.02 So, you know, we can't push that so we're like, "Okay." 00:12:00.05\00:12:03.39 And we had an evening program on a Friday evening 00:12:03.42\00:12:07.92 where we had, Europe for Jesus here, 00:12:07.96\00:12:11.46 and she was passing by, she came in 00:12:11.49\00:12:13.06 and it was a testimonies evening, 00:12:13.09\00:12:15.16 and she loved it and after that, she said to me, 00:12:15.20\00:12:18.13 "I want to give you my contact details, 00:12:18.17\00:12:19.83 I want to know what's going on." 00:12:19.87\00:12:21.20 And since then she has been coming to church most Sabbaths. 00:12:21.24\00:12:26.07 And this is quite a common story of how people are, 00:12:26.11\00:12:31.31 when they come to our church service. 00:12:31.35\00:12:33.05 It's three, coming to the center quite often, 00:12:33.08\00:12:36.28 and then wanting to find out a bit more 00:12:36.32\00:12:38.39 about what's happening in the church. 00:12:38.42\00:12:40.06 Fantastic. 00:12:40.09\00:12:41.42 Now so you've been managing it for how many years now? 00:12:41.46\00:12:44.16 Just over two years now. 00:12:44.19\00:12:45.63 So how has it affected you? 00:12:45.66\00:12:49.26 For me, it has been, I don't know 00:12:49.30\00:12:53.03 whether I can even put it into words. 00:12:53.07\00:12:54.84 When I first took on the role, 00:12:54.87\00:12:56.37 I was just so overwhelmed 00:12:56.40\00:12:57.84 with how was I going to lead this center, 00:12:57.87\00:13:00.94 what did I have to give, 00:13:00.98\00:13:03.71 but my experiences God has given me everything 00:13:03.75\00:13:07.55 I have needed to lead the center 00:13:07.58\00:13:10.55 and my experience of reaching out 00:13:10.59\00:13:13.05 into the community has been a very, very positive one. 00:13:13.09\00:13:15.92 I'm amazed at how many people 00:13:15.96\00:13:17.69 actually come in through our doors, 00:13:17.73\00:13:19.53 and want to know 00:13:19.56\00:13:20.90 a bit more about our center and our church. 00:13:20.93\00:13:25.33 For me, it's just amazing. 00:13:25.37\00:13:27.24 Fantastic. 00:13:27.27\00:13:28.60 Well, thank you so much for the work you're doing here. 00:13:28.64\00:13:31.11 And I expect that there's gonna be wonderful stories 00:13:31.14\00:13:34.04 coming out in the future. 00:13:34.08\00:13:35.54 God bless you in what you're doing. 00:13:35.58\00:13:36.91 Thank you. 00:13:36.95\00:13:38.28 Viewers at home, we have many centers of influence 00:13:38.31\00:13:41.35 all around the world in centers, 00:13:41.38\00:13:44.25 like Dublin and tremendous challenges, 00:13:44.29\00:13:47.16 of course, because there's been years of prejudice 00:13:47.19\00:13:49.96 built up and years of misunderstanding 00:13:49.99\00:13:52.89 and this is a center that is putting Christ method 00:13:52.93\00:13:55.96 of ministry into practice, mingling, showing sympathy, 00:13:56.00\00:14:00.64 ministering to needs, winning confidence, 00:14:00.67\00:14:02.60 and then leading people to Jesus. 00:14:02.64\00:14:03.97 So please pray for this center here in Dublin. 00:14:04.01\00:14:07.11 We'll be right back after this break. 00:14:07.14\00:14:08.88
