Welcome back to Lyon. 00:00:22.98\00:00:24.32 This is a ancient city 00:00:24.35\00:00:26.25 and behind me you can see some Roman ruins, 00:00:26.29\00:00:28.82 stretching back some 2,000 years. 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.29 Next up, we traveled to Chile 00:00:31.33\00:00:33.16 to learn more about a center of influence. 00:00:33.19\00:00:36.16 I wanted to serve in the mission field 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.00 from the time I started university, 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.97 but for some reason 00:00:42.00\00:00:44.17 I think I'm beginning to understand now 00:00:44.21\00:00:46.74 the way this year has gone, this has been my opportunity 00:00:46.78\00:00:49.98 to work with One Year in Mission. 00:00:50.01\00:00:51.68 Here, the program didn't exist 00:00:51.71\00:00:53.98 when I started University in the States, 00:00:54.02\00:00:56.62 but I always felt that I needed to finish 00:00:56.65\00:00:58.39 my program there first. 00:00:58.42\00:01:00.76 So I think God was asking me to wait 00:01:00.79\00:01:02.19 for this time to serve here 00:01:02.22\00:01:04.69 with the One Year in Mission team, 00:01:04.73\00:01:07.80 but ultimately, 00:01:07.83\00:01:09.93 I started thinking in earnest about serving 00:01:09.96\00:01:13.13 after my third year of university. 00:01:13.17\00:01:15.77 We took a three-week evangelism field school 00:01:15.80\00:01:21.14 in Honduras. 00:01:21.18\00:01:22.58 We did evangelistic campaigns, 00:01:22.61\00:01:24.81 we worked with the students in the Adventist schools there 00:01:24.85\00:01:28.82 also with a children's home. 00:01:28.85\00:01:31.72 For me, it was just an amazing experience 00:01:31.75\00:01:33.96 because we worked with the church. 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.89 We did not go with the attitude 00:01:36.93\00:01:38.66 that we were serving the church in an area 00:01:38.69\00:01:44.13 where they were lacking. 00:01:44.17\00:01:45.50 We went to work 00:01:45.53\00:01:46.87 with an already functioning mission program, so to speak, 00:01:46.90\00:01:51.07 of the Adventist Church in that country. 00:01:51.11\00:01:53.41 And it's really a revolutionary perspective on missions 00:01:53.44\00:01:57.05 when you realize that you're going to work 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.95 with your church 00:01:59.98\00:02:01.32 with other brothers and sisters of your faith in another place. 00:02:01.35\00:02:04.82 You're going to support. You're going as a resource. 00:02:04.85\00:02:07.96 And you go with a completely different attitude. 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.63 And when I got back from Honduras, 00:02:10.66\00:02:12.29 I started speaking with my professor, 00:02:12.33\00:02:15.30 I worked for the professor of New Testament 00:02:15.33\00:02:18.27 who is Chilean, 00:02:18.30\00:02:19.67 and he told me about this project. 00:02:19.70\00:02:21.50 It's a closed call, they choose recommended people, 00:02:21.54\00:02:26.81 not everyone can apply. 00:02:26.84\00:02:28.78 And so I received the call and prayed for about a year 00:02:28.81\00:02:31.78 and here I am. 00:02:31.81\00:02:33.72 So I have a wide range of responsibilities here. 00:02:33.75\00:02:36.85 I am here primarily as an English teacher 00:02:36.89\00:02:39.89 and also to work in youth evangelism 00:02:39.92\00:02:43.16 and with the church when possible. 00:02:43.19\00:02:45.76 I teach English classes in the Iglesia Central. 00:02:45.79\00:02:49.96 I also teach an English workshop for parents 00:02:50.00\00:02:54.50 and the Adventist school here. 00:02:54.54\00:02:57.57 I support the English classes as a resource for the students. 00:02:57.61\00:03:01.68 There is an English teacher here in the Adventist school, 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.11 but I am his assistant. 00:03:05.15\00:03:07.58 More or less I work with Pathfinders. 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.49 And I also work 00:03:10.52\00:03:11.89 with the One Year in Mission volunteers 00:03:11.92\00:03:14.79 and various outreach activities in the community. 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.29 And here in the Espacio Nuevo Tiempo, 00:03:18.33\00:03:21.10 the center of influence 00:03:21.13\00:03:22.50 I teach English classes here and support other activities. 00:03:22.53\00:03:27.77 I'm originally from Maryland. 00:03:27.80\00:03:30.97 My father is a pastor in the Chesapeake Conference. 00:03:31.01\00:03:33.48 So that's where I hail from. 00:03:33.51\00:03:35.91 And it's been interesting 00:03:35.94\00:03:39.81 adapting to the culture here. 00:03:39.85\00:03:42.38 I love it. It's great. 00:03:42.42\00:03:43.89 It's extremely open, extremely caring, 00:03:43.92\00:03:48.49 but again because Chile is a more modernized country. 00:03:48.52\00:03:52.23 This isn't the mission experience 00:03:52.26\00:03:55.00 that a lot of people expect 00:03:55.03\00:03:56.80 from short-term mission trips to Central America per se, 00:03:56.83\00:04:01.84 it's more modernized, more secularized. 00:04:01.87\00:04:05.17 People are not immediately open 00:04:05.21\00:04:08.04 to sharing directly about faith. 00:04:08.08\00:04:11.68 The majority of the population lives in the cities here. 00:04:11.71\00:04:15.88 So there's a lot of indirect evangelism 00:04:15.92\00:04:19.42 that happens. 00:04:19.45\00:04:20.89 And, of course, the people are very friendly, 00:04:20.92\00:04:24.26 very accepting, 00:04:24.29\00:04:26.83 but they also take some convincing. 00:04:26.86\00:04:30.10 So you have to work around the question of, 00:04:30.13\00:04:33.34 are they accepting what I'm saying 00:04:33.37\00:04:36.40 simply because they're trying to be polite 00:04:36.44\00:04:38.47 because this is the culture 00:04:38.51\00:04:39.84 or are we really making a connection here? 00:04:39.87\00:04:43.08 So that's the struggle. 00:04:43.11\00:04:45.51 That's what we have to learn 00:04:45.55\00:04:48.95 to do evangelism cross-culturally. 00:04:48.98\00:04:52.29 I spoke a little bit of Spanish before I arrived. 00:04:52.32\00:04:55.86 I had the foundation 00:04:55.89\00:04:57.23 at least from having studied before, 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.86 but it is a completely new experience 00:04:59.89\00:05:02.36 to speak Spanish in a country 00:05:02.40\00:05:05.57 where it is the native language 00:05:05.60\00:05:07.07 because we don't realize 00:05:07.10\00:05:08.70 when we speak English or our own language, 00:05:08.74\00:05:11.84 how much slang we use, 00:05:11.87\00:05:14.94 how many sayings, how many phrases we have. 00:05:14.98\00:05:19.35 We don't realize how quickly we ourselves speak. 00:05:19.38\00:05:23.05 So when we enter another culture, 00:05:23.08\00:05:24.75 we try to learn that language. 00:05:24.79\00:05:27.16 It's completely different. 00:05:27.19\00:05:29.72 Book knowledge doesn't cover everything. 00:05:29.76\00:05:31.99 It took me about two months, 00:05:32.03\00:05:34.50 even speaking a little Spanish the whole time 00:05:34.53\00:05:37.87 to become conversationally fluent. 00:05:37.90\00:05:40.30 At this point, I am capable of improvisation, 00:05:40.34\00:05:44.31 capable of preaching in Spanish also, 00:05:44.34\00:05:48.41 but it hasn't been easy. 00:05:48.44\00:05:49.78 You wander around a lot of time feeling a little lost, 00:05:49.81\00:05:54.25 not knowing exactly 00:05:54.28\00:05:55.62 what all is going on every moment, 00:05:55.65\00:05:58.65 but the people here are very patient. 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.26 And it means so much in another culture 00:06:02.29\00:06:04.59 when you honestly make the effort 00:06:04.63\00:06:06.46 to communicate with people. 00:06:06.49\00:06:08.56 One of the things that I've made a point to do, 00:06:08.60\00:06:10.93 and that I would recommend for anyone 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.80 serving in a foreign country 00:06:12.83\00:06:14.77 is not to speak your own language 00:06:14.80\00:06:19.54 to an extreme in front of everyone, 00:06:19.57\00:06:22.84 not to go out of your way to speak English. 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.41 There are English speakers in the high school 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.12 where I work, 00:06:28.15\00:06:29.55 but I speak to them in Spanish when I can. 00:06:29.58\00:06:32.55 It makes a huge difference 00:06:32.59\00:06:33.99 in developing the relationships with people. 00:06:34.02\00:06:37.03 It's incredible because I feel like 00:06:37.06\00:06:39.06 it is preparing me better for life in ministry, 00:06:39.09\00:06:41.86 which is what I studied for, which is what I trained for, 00:06:41.90\00:06:44.83 one of the reasons I came here 00:06:44.87\00:06:46.33 was to work directly with the church, 00:06:46.37\00:06:48.64 to work directly with an administration 00:06:48.67\00:06:50.54 that is actively involved 00:06:50.57\00:06:53.01 in outreach ministries in the community 00:06:53.04\00:06:55.51 and to learn from that and to study from that. 00:06:55.54\00:06:58.15 So I am working directly 00:06:58.18\00:07:00.32 with several different pastors here. 00:07:00.35\00:07:02.98 I have a lot of mentors so to speak. 00:07:03.02\00:07:06.05 I'm learning how to use different methods of ministry. 00:07:06.09\00:07:09.69 And also it's an incredible blessing 00:07:09.72\00:07:12.33 to be able to be in ministry and to have a second language. 00:07:12.36\00:07:15.76 Next up, we traveled back to West Africa 00:07:33.82\00:07:36.18 to learn more about Adventist Mission 00:07:36.22\00:07:38.09 in that part of the world. 00:07:38.12\00:07:39.45 The West-Central Africa division 00:07:44.93\00:07:46.66 sends missionaries to the frontlines of mission 00:07:46.70\00:07:49.23 in both the cities and remote hard to reach areas, 00:07:49.26\00:07:53.34 but mission also happens in Pierre's office 00:07:53.37\00:07:55.94 at the division headquarters. 00:07:55.97\00:07:57.87 Pierre is the administrative assistant 00:07:57.91\00:07:59.64 to the President 00:07:59.67\00:08:01.01 of the West-Central Africa division. 00:08:01.04\00:08:02.64 Part of his job is to work behind the scenes 00:08:02.68\00:08:05.11 making sure missionaries are placed 00:08:05.15\00:08:07.02 where they are needed most. 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.68 And while his efforts usually go unnoticed, 00:08:08.72\00:08:11.35 Pierre doesn't mind 00:08:11.39\00:08:12.79 and finds joy in being part of God's work. 00:08:12.82\00:08:16.12 To me, I think 00:08:16.16\00:08:18.33 all those who work in the vineyard of the Lord 00:08:18.36\00:08:23.06 work in various capacities. 00:08:23.10\00:08:25.10 Some do some work that people can see, 00:08:25.13\00:08:29.30 but others also work behind the curtains. 00:08:29.34\00:08:33.68 Even if you're not on the frontline 00:08:33.71\00:08:36.44 for people to see, 00:08:36.48\00:08:37.91 I think that is not the most important, 00:08:37.95\00:08:40.55 but even in your very small corner 00:08:40.58\00:08:42.85 you can contribute to the progress of the Lord. 00:08:42.88\00:08:46.12 Pierre wakes up early at 4:30 00:08:46.15\00:08:48.22 so he can beat the morning rush and get to his office. 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.13 He answers emails, sorts out itineraries, 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.13 and applies for visas for missionaries, 00:08:54.16\00:08:56.20 among other things. 00:08:56.23\00:08:57.73 I don't see it as ordinary office work. 00:08:57.77\00:09:02.74 I work in the Church of the Lord. 00:09:02.77\00:09:06.37 Work in the Church is a blessing 00:09:06.41\00:09:08.94 because we are called to work to be coworkers with the Lord 00:09:08.98\00:09:14.12 in the salvation of people. 00:09:14.15\00:09:18.02 And as Pierre goes about his work, 00:09:18.05\00:09:20.02 he comes in contact with people who need counsel. 00:09:20.06\00:09:23.06 As a church elder, 00:09:23.09\00:09:24.43 Pierre prays for the different people 00:09:24.46\00:09:25.79 who come to his office. 00:09:25.83\00:09:27.56 Sometimes he gives a word of encouragement 00:09:27.60\00:09:29.43 to the missionaries 00:09:29.46\00:09:30.80 who come before they head out to the mission field. 00:09:30.83\00:09:33.03 Nothing could have been really possible 00:09:33.07\00:09:36.04 without the people 00:09:36.07\00:09:37.41 who are working behind the scenes. 00:09:37.44\00:09:39.67 And some of us as leaders 00:09:39.71\00:09:41.74 were just here to represent them. 00:09:41.78\00:09:44.11 And we are the public person, 00:09:44.15\00:09:45.85 but those who are working behind the scenes 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.55 in our division 00:09:48.58\00:09:50.25 are serious workers 00:09:50.29\00:09:52.95 for the cause of the Lord in our territory. 00:09:52.99\00:09:55.76 So we are grateful for their life. 00:09:55.79\00:09:57.69 We are grateful for their talent. 00:09:57.73\00:09:59.93 We are also grateful for whatever they are doing. 00:09:59.96\00:10:03.60 And we work as a team. 00:10:03.63\00:10:05.83 Please pray for Pierre and the team 00:10:05.87\00:10:07.87 in the West-Central Africa division. 00:10:07.90\00:10:10.11 Pray that the Adventist Church continues to grow there, 00:10:10.14\00:10:13.27 and that many are reached for the kingdom. 00:10:13.31\00:10:16.44 Thank you for supporting mission. 00:10:16.48\00:10:18.18 Well, that's about it for today's program, 00:10:41.44\00:10:43.20 and I hope that you've been challenged 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.64 and inspired by our 360-degree view 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.64 of mission around the world. 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.01 We met Jenny, who was serving with passion 00:10:49.04\00:10:51.48 at a center of influence in Chile. 00:10:51.51\00:10:54.02 We saw the challenges 00:10:54.05\00:10:55.38 and the opportunities of mission 00:10:55.42\00:10:57.35 in West Africa. 00:10:57.39\00:10:58.79 And, of course, we've seen the challenge of mission 00:10:58.82\00:11:00.86 right here in Europe. 00:11:00.89\00:11:02.22 And I wanna thank you for what you are doing 00:11:02.26\00:11:03.93 to participate with us in mission 00:11:03.96\00:11:06.70 with your generous donations to Global Mission, 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.36 through your prayerful support 00:11:09.40\00:11:10.83 and through your personal involvement. 00:11:10.87\00:11:12.93 You are part of God's mission here in this world. 00:11:12.97\00:11:16.37 And I wanna thank you for the continuing focus 00:11:16.40\00:11:18.71 if you put on mission in your churches 00:11:18.74\00:11:21.24 to keep that fan that flame keeping it alive. 00:11:21.28\00:11:24.35 Well, for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:11:24.38\00:11:26.21 And I hope you can join me next time 00:11:26.25\00:11:28.12 right here on Mission 360. 00:11:28.15\00:11:30.35 God 00:11:57.15\00:12:00.55 Maker of heaven and earth 00:12:00.58\00:12:07.02 Maker of the universe 00:12:07.06\00:12:13.60 You are everlasting 00:12:13.63\00:12:19.50 God 00:12:23.51\00:12:26.78 Keeper of time and of space 00:12:26.81\00:12:33.38 Keeper of the human race 00:12:33.42\00:12:39.92 You are everlasting 00:12:39.95\00:12:45.69 You took upon yourself
