A young missionary embarks on a long-awaited mission. 00:00:17.78\00:00:21.12 The sights and sounds of Lyon, France, 00:00:21.15\00:00:23.89 an Adventist Mission in West Africa, 00:00:23.92\00:00:25.85 all this and much more coming up next 00:00:25.89\00:00:28.22 on Mission 360. 00:00:28.26\00:00:29.59 Hello, and welcome to Mission 360. 00:01:09.26\00:01:11.37 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:11.40\00:01:12.77 Today's program is coming to you 00:01:12.80\00:01:14.30 from the city of Lyon in France. 00:01:14.34\00:01:17.14 This is an ancient city 00:01:17.17\00:01:18.51 stretching back some 2,000 years. 00:01:18.54\00:01:21.24 This is the place where for several centuries, 00:01:21.28\00:01:24.08 it served as the silk producing capital of the world. 00:01:24.11\00:01:27.48 Even today, it's Europe's major producer of silk. 00:01:27.52\00:01:30.79 It's also the birthplace of cinema 00:01:30.82\00:01:32.99 where the Lumiere brothers in 1895 00:01:33.02\00:01:35.69 created the first motion picture. 00:01:35.72\00:01:38.33 It's also the home of Interpol, 00:01:38.36\00:01:39.83 the international crime fighting organization, 00:01:39.86\00:01:42.80 but all these achievements fade into nothing 00:01:42.83\00:01:45.47 when we compare it to the topic of this program, 00:01:45.50\00:01:47.84 which is mission. 00:01:47.87\00:01:49.20 And we look at mission all over the world today, 00:01:49.24\00:01:50.77 but first up, let's travel to West Africa. 00:01:50.81\00:01:53.17 These ruins used to be a beautiful church. 00:01:56.54\00:01:59.28 Now this place has been claimed by plants. 00:01:59.31\00:02:02.18 But hope is not gone. 00:02:02.22\00:02:03.69 Just like these plants, 00:02:03.72\00:02:05.15 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:05.19\00:02:06.55 took root in this country 00:02:06.59\00:02:07.92 nearly 100 years ago. 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.06 In 1926, the first Adventist missionaries 00:02:10.09\00:02:12.83 to Liberia, 00:02:12.86\00:02:14.20 R. Helbig and E. Flammer arrived. 00:02:14.23\00:02:17.07 A year later, these German missionaries 00:02:17.10\00:02:19.27 established Liberia's first Adventist Church. 00:02:19.30\00:02:22.14 I started going to church here in 1989 00:02:22.17\00:02:26.51 with my late father 00:02:26.54\00:02:28.81 who was once a deacon of the church. 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.45 He used to carry me to church when I was a little child. 00:02:31.48\00:02:35.35 They built a school here and would encourage us, 00:02:35.38\00:02:38.02 the young children from the church, 00:02:38.05\00:02:39.82 to come here and go to school. 00:02:39.85\00:02:41.62 There I was in a school, and then he talked to me 00:02:41.66\00:02:44.53 to join the baptismal class in the church. 00:02:44.56\00:02:47.23 So at that time, 00:02:47.26\00:02:48.60 I used to come to church with my dad, 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.50 but I was not too regular. 00:02:50.53\00:02:52.23 But from his efforts, I was able to be convinced 00:02:52.27\00:02:55.30 and became a member of the church. 00:02:55.34\00:02:57.04 After Elder Maye was baptized, 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.94 the first Liberian civil war erupted. 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.64 Political and military conflict 00:03:01.68\00:03:03.35 forced many church members to flee. 00:03:03.38\00:03:05.51 During the war, both the church and the school 00:03:05.55\00:03:08.18 were burnt down by rebels. 00:03:08.22\00:03:09.82 So those who were left behind gave us information that 00:03:12.55\00:03:15.99 "Your church is broken down. 00:03:16.02\00:03:17.56 It's been burnt." 00:03:17.59\00:03:18.96 A place which was once a blessing 00:03:18.99\00:03:20.70 and a source of joy was now reduced to ruins, 00:03:20.73\00:03:24.50 but after the conflict subsided, 00:03:24.53\00:03:26.27 a faithful group worshiped in the only area 00:03:26.30\00:03:28.87 that survived the destruction. 00:03:28.90\00:03:30.84 To this day, they joyfully worship together 00:03:30.87\00:03:33.91 and are confident that if the place is rebuilt, 00:03:33.94\00:03:36.34 the congregation can be restored 00:03:36.38\00:03:37.98 to what it once was. 00:03:38.01\00:03:39.35 But sadly, this small group's funds 00:03:39.38\00:03:41.28 are limited. 00:03:41.32\00:03:42.65 It would take a miracle for them to reconstruct 00:03:42.68\00:03:44.49 even a portion of the building. 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.42 If I had money, I would do it on my own. 00:03:46.45\00:03:50.49 With the congregation that we have here, 00:03:50.53\00:03:52.49 we are not able to even fix one structure here. 00:03:52.53\00:03:56.30 So my anticipation is for the world church 00:03:56.33\00:03:59.43 to come to our aid 00:03:59.47\00:04:00.87 so that this place can be rebuilt. 00:04:00.90\00:04:03.51 Your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.31 will help rebuild the birthplace 00:04:05.34\00:04:06.98 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Liberia, 00:04:07.01\00:04:09.78 where a place of worship and a school 00:04:09.81\00:04:11.75 can be established again. 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.92 Please pray for God's people in Liberia 00:04:13.95\00:04:16.42 so that this dream can become a reality. 00:04:16.45\00:04:19.62 Thank you for your support 00:04:19.65\00:04:20.99 of the 13th Sabbath Offering this quarter. 00:04:21.02\00:04:23.26 My guest here in Lyon is Marianne 00:04:52.99\00:04:55.59 who is the communication director 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.93 for the South France Conference. 00:04:57.96\00:04:59.53 Marianne, thank you so much for joining us. 00:04:59.56\00:05:01.06 Thank you. 00:05:01.10\00:05:02.43 Could you describe the territory of the conference 00:05:02.46\00:05:04.63 where we're located here? 00:05:04.67\00:05:06.40 Okay, well, 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.34 France has two conferences north and south. 00:05:08.37\00:05:11.01 So you draw a line 00:05:11.04\00:05:12.37 between La Rochelle and above Geneva 00:05:12.41\00:05:14.74 'cause maybe people know Geneva more. 00:05:14.78\00:05:16.11 Yes. Yes. 00:05:16.14\00:05:17.48 And everything which is below that. 00:05:17.51\00:05:19.01 There are about 5,000 members. 00:05:19.05\00:05:22.08 The territory also includes Corsica... 00:05:22.12\00:05:24.89 Oh. And Monaco. 00:05:24.92\00:05:26.25 Okay. 00:05:26.29\00:05:27.66 And as there are lots of students, 00:05:27.69\00:05:30.83 big towns in the biggest cities of France, 00:05:30.86\00:05:33.73 we've got Lyon and Marseille. 00:05:33.76\00:05:36.20 And, but where the conferences is Montpellier, 00:05:36.23\00:05:40.64 that's another city town 00:05:40.67\00:05:42.77 as student town and Bordeaux as well. 00:05:42.80\00:05:45.14 All right, so... So lots of students. 00:05:45.17\00:05:46.91 Yeah. 00:05:46.94\00:05:48.28 So we're in Lyon which is a large city. 00:05:48.31\00:05:50.85 What are the challenges 00:05:50.88\00:05:52.45 you face in mission here in this conference? 00:05:52.48\00:05:56.28 One of the biggest challenges I think 00:05:56.32\00:06:00.62 is getting to... 00:06:00.66\00:06:06.59 Bring people to our churches, 00:06:06.63\00:06:08.23 for instance, things are very simple here. 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.67 We have to take things very simple here 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.17 because I think people are very wary 00:06:13.20\00:06:15.40 about religion 00:06:15.44\00:06:17.51 as in a general way. 00:06:17.54\00:06:20.64 And over the past 15 years 00:06:20.68\00:06:23.14 small groups has been something big 00:06:23.18\00:06:24.71 in this conference 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.08 because we see the necessity 00:06:26.11\00:06:27.52 to really start bonding with people 00:06:27.55\00:06:30.62 through simple relationships, just friendship. 00:06:30.65\00:06:33.92 And that's the way we get into contact. 00:06:33.96\00:06:38.83 Yeah. 00:06:38.86\00:06:40.20 So how does the small groups operate? 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.46 Well, the small groups, it's... 00:06:42.50\00:06:46.43 There's the mother church. 00:06:46.47\00:06:49.67 Yes. Yeah. 00:06:49.70\00:06:51.04 Sometimes it's been interesting coincidences 00:06:51.07\00:06:53.81 because all churches don't have their own building. 00:06:53.84\00:06:57.71 And since we share the building, 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.15 sometimes and sometimes it's been, 00:06:59.18\00:07:01.58 we wouldn't have the building available. 00:07:01.62\00:07:03.79 So they would say, for instance, 00:07:03.82\00:07:05.99 once a month, you won't be able to use the building. 00:07:06.02\00:07:09.39 So that was a great opportunity for us to say, 00:07:09.42\00:07:13.13 "Well, let's start." 00:07:13.16\00:07:15.10 And so people go home and started inviting people. 00:07:15.13\00:07:17.93 And I can tell you one story, which was quite interesting 00:07:17.97\00:07:21.34 'cause when we think that 00:07:21.37\00:07:25.34 we've got a mission for something. 00:07:25.37\00:07:27.44 First, we're tempted to think that 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.24 we know what Jesus is asking us to do. 00:07:29.28\00:07:32.25 And so for instance, for a small group, you say, 00:07:32.28\00:07:34.22 "I'm gonna have a small group at my house." 00:07:34.25\00:07:36.22 And then you think, "Oh, I'm going to ask this neighbor, 00:07:36.25\00:07:38.12 this one and this one. 00:07:38.15\00:07:39.49 I know we've spoken a lot about this, 00:07:39.52\00:07:41.49 and they'll be interested." 00:07:41.52\00:07:43.02 And then you realize that Jesus didn't, 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.29 maybe one day they'll come, 00:07:45.33\00:07:46.80 but he's the one that decides 00:07:46.83\00:07:48.76 who is going to send to your small group. 00:07:48.80\00:07:51.00 And that's humbling 00:07:51.03\00:07:52.47 because we're just here as servants, simple servants 00:07:52.50\00:07:56.74 and through the way we act through what we share. 00:07:56.77\00:08:01.04 People are attracted to that or not, 00:08:01.08\00:08:02.74 but we're not the ones that decide 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.11 who will be attracted or not. 00:08:05.15\00:08:06.82 And for instance, there in quite a few small groups 00:08:06.85\00:08:11.95 there have been lots of children activities, 00:08:11.99\00:08:14.26 and we go outside, we share things outside, 00:08:14.29\00:08:17.69 then people see the children playing together 00:08:17.73\00:08:20.73 and say, "Oh, come, I could come. 00:08:20.76\00:08:22.33 And then what are you doing here? 00:08:22.36\00:08:23.70 Can we come next week?" And that's how it all starts. 00:08:23.73\00:08:27.44 So the small groups you're describing 00:08:27.47\00:08:29.30 are actual Sabbath morning. 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.21 They're worshiping homes rather than a church building. 00:08:31.24\00:08:33.81 Yes. 00:08:33.84\00:08:35.18 And you have found that in many environments 00:08:35.21\00:08:37.65 that's much more attractive to people 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.48 who would find it hard coming to a church building. 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.55 Definitely. 00:08:41.58\00:08:42.92 And for instance, I belong to a small group myself. 00:08:42.95\00:08:45.79 And in our small group, we've also got people 00:08:45.82\00:08:48.52 that had left the church at one time, 00:08:48.56\00:08:50.73 and then since we'd never completely lost contact, 00:08:50.76\00:08:56.26 it was a way to say, "Might you just come here. 00:08:56.30\00:08:58.90 You must be missing something to share 00:08:58.93\00:09:01.14 about the way you live your faith 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.74 because you still believe in Jesus." 00:09:02.77\00:09:06.17 And so they come and they say, 00:09:06.21\00:09:07.54 "Yes, this is a place 00:09:07.58\00:09:09.38 where I could actually bring my friends as well 00:09:09.41\00:09:11.25 because I'm missing this whole church dimension." 00:09:11.28\00:09:15.62 Yes. Wonderful. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.09 Now this morning, 00:09:17.12\00:09:18.55 you were also showing me 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.19 your magazine that you're using, 00:09:20.22\00:09:21.86 which helps build connection with church members. 00:09:21.89\00:09:24.63 Tell us about that? 00:09:24.66\00:09:25.99 Well, the magazine, really we wanted to find a way 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.73 for church members within the conference 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.93 to communicate directly. 00:09:30.97\00:09:33.30 There are several parts in the magazine. 00:09:33.34\00:09:35.14 The first part is always a way for the conference 00:09:35.17\00:09:37.61 to be able to share with church members 00:09:37.64\00:09:39.24 on what's going on. 00:09:39.27\00:09:40.61 So for instance, all projects 00:09:40.64\00:09:41.98 we're going to communicate about that a lot. 00:09:42.01\00:09:43.98 That's going to be the president writing 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.78 or different board members, 00:09:45.81\00:09:47.75 and then there'll be parts, 00:09:47.78\00:09:49.48 for instance, there's a different church, 00:09:49.52\00:09:52.79 which will be presented in each magazine 00:09:52.82\00:09:55.52 with always the same three questions. 00:09:55.56\00:09:58.03 It's a free presentation, 00:09:58.06\00:10:01.33 and then what's your spiritual choice 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.37 and what could we pray for you? 00:10:03.40\00:10:05.23 So there's every week 00:10:05.27\00:10:06.90 we send off a little calendar of prayer, 00:10:06.94\00:10:09.30 about 500 people subscribe to this little on WhatsApp. 00:10:09.34\00:10:13.84 And so we know who we're praying for. 00:10:13.88\00:10:16.54 Good. 00:10:16.58\00:10:19.58 The intention is really for church members 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.02 to have direct access to the information 00:10:22.05\00:10:25.72 and to feel part of this big family. 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.42 So, Marianne, this morning, we visited a site 00:10:28.46\00:10:31.66 where a new center of influence will be started. 00:10:31.69\00:10:34.20 Why is the conference starting the center of influence? 00:10:34.23\00:10:37.00 So you said we'll start with the why. 00:10:37.03\00:10:39.17 Why are we here? 00:10:39.20\00:10:40.77 What's our mission is to share Jesus, 00:10:40.80\00:10:42.90 is to participate in making people's lives better 00:10:42.94\00:10:46.57 as Jesus who made our lives better. 00:10:46.61\00:10:48.81 And so we believe that 00:10:48.84\00:10:50.18 with this dynamics of small groups, 00:10:50.21\00:10:52.35 which is already something 00:10:52.38\00:10:53.72 which is very presence in our conference, 00:10:53.75\00:10:55.98 it's going to be a normal continuity 00:10:56.02\00:11:00.46 of being able in different little groups 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.79 to be able to share services with the community. 00:11:02.82\00:11:06.70 Thanks so much for sharing with us, Marianne. 00:11:06.73\00:11:08.93 And viewers at home 00:11:08.96\00:11:10.30 what a tremendous opportunity they have here in Lyon 00:11:10.33\00:11:12.80 to start a new center of influence. 00:11:12.83\00:11:15.00 We'll be right back after this break. 00:11:15.04\00:11:16.81
