He was close to people. 00:04:28.26\00:04:31.40 He offered them the bread of life. 00:04:31.43\00:04:33.40 He healed them and took care of them 00:04:33.44\00:04:36.10 and we want to do the same. 00:04:36.14\00:04:37.97 The leaders at Tpane3ata invite you to pray 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.54 for this growing group of new believers. 00:04:40.58\00:04:42.94 Please pray for this urban center of influence 00:04:42.98\00:04:45.55 and many others around the world 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.22 that find creative ways to introduce people to Jesus. 00:04:47.25\00:04:51.32 Thank you for supporting urban centers of influence 00:04:51.35\00:04:54.86 through Global Mission. 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.56 My guest is Pastor Rudy Dingjan 00:05:16.31\00:05:18.55 who was the leader of church planting 00:05:18.58\00:05:21.32 and church growth here 00:05:21.35\00:05:22.68 in the Netherlands for many years. 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.05 Rudy, thanks for joining us. It's okay. 00:05:24.09\00:05:26.49 Now can you tell me please 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.52 describe what the challenge is of mission 00:05:28.56\00:05:31.26 here in the Netherlands? 00:05:31.29\00:05:32.96 Well, though we have the name to be very Christian nation, 00:05:32.99\00:05:36.80 Christianity has moved to the margin. 00:05:36.83\00:05:39.60 And to many people, 00:05:39.63\00:05:42.00 it's a true fact that they only go to church 00:05:42.04\00:05:44.51 if there's a funeral of someone they know 00:05:44.54\00:05:46.81 or somebody gets married who is churchy. 00:05:46.84\00:05:49.74 But for the rest of it, to be a pastor, 00:05:49.78\00:05:53.68 to be a Christian, 00:05:53.72\00:05:56.28 it's almost like 00:05:56.32\00:05:57.65 some negative aspect of your life. 00:05:57.69\00:05:59.42 Right. Yeah. 00:05:59.45\00:06:01.02 So the number of people 00:06:01.06\00:06:03.02 who would actually attend church is minimal? 00:06:03.06\00:06:07.76 Yeah. Yeah. 00:06:07.80\00:06:09.13 They are not many left now. 00:06:09.16\00:06:10.50 But the ones that go to church, 00:06:10.53\00:06:11.87 they are the bold ones, 00:06:11.90\00:06:13.23 otherwise they would have left already. 00:06:13.27\00:06:14.60 Right. 00:06:14.64\00:06:15.97 Now what about the Seventh-day Adventist Church? 00:06:16.00\00:06:17.34 How would you describe the Adventist Church 00:06:17.37\00:06:18.84 in the Netherlands? 00:06:18.87\00:06:20.28 Well, we are a community of about 6,000 members 00:06:20.31\00:06:23.65 in a population of 70 million. 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.61 Wow. 00:06:25.65\00:06:27.35 And we are struggling to reach the people around us. 00:06:27.38\00:06:33.09 As we used to be evangelists of other Christians, 00:06:33.12\00:06:37.06 now it's important to learn 00:06:37.09\00:06:38.86 to be an evangelist to non-Christians. 00:06:38.89\00:06:42.00 And that's a completely different game. 00:06:42.03\00:06:44.67 Now tell me about that game 00:06:44.70\00:06:46.03 because I know that you focus very much on church planting? 00:06:46.07\00:06:49.97 Why did you have that focus? 00:06:50.01\00:06:51.77 Well, we have this hard time of reaching people. 00:06:51.81\00:06:55.61 And then Peter Humefelt 00:06:55.64\00:06:58.18 who was our division church growth leader 00:06:58.21\00:07:01.52 at that time, 00:07:01.55\00:07:02.88 took us to Australia 00:07:02.92\00:07:04.25 to see how church planting worked 00:07:04.29\00:07:06.29 because evangelism itself 00:07:06.32\00:07:08.52 didn't work in the '90s anymore. 00:07:08.56\00:07:10.89 And then when I came back, 00:07:10.93\00:07:13.03 I was full of enthusiasm 00:07:13.06\00:07:15.20 because there it was possible to touch communities, 00:07:15.23\00:07:18.80 touch cities by planting new churches, 00:07:18.83\00:07:22.17 though they sometimes were very small. 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.24 And we try to do it in Holland, 00:07:24.27\00:07:25.61 but we didn't have enough pastors. 00:07:25.64\00:07:27.78 We couldn't set free a pastor to start church planting, 00:07:27.81\00:07:30.38 so we said, well, let's do it with members. 00:07:30.41\00:07:34.32 So teams of members started planting churches. 00:07:34.35\00:07:38.25 And not all of them were a success, 00:07:38.29\00:07:41.72 but the ones that did succeed 00:07:41.76\00:07:44.73 the people that started it stayed. 00:07:44.76\00:07:46.33 Yes. 00:07:46.36\00:07:47.70 And the problem with pastors is they often get moved. 00:07:47.73\00:07:49.60 Right. 00:07:49.63\00:07:50.97 And then the project now is spoiled. 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.57 And working with lay members has been very, very good thing. 00:07:53.60\00:07:58.64 Wonderful. 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.01 Now, several years ago I traveled with you 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.01 to visit some of these church plants. 00:08:02.04\00:08:04.38 Can you describe for our viewers 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.55 some of these initiatives? 00:08:06.58\00:08:08.52 What did they look like? What did they do? 00:08:08.55\00:08:10.82 Well, we find that it's very hard 00:08:10.85\00:08:15.06 for new churches to stay new. 00:08:15.09\00:08:17.19 Right. 00:08:17.23\00:08:18.56 It's very easy to become settled 00:08:18.59\00:08:21.16 once you are an organized church. 00:08:21.20\00:08:24.07 But it's a great joy to see 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.53 how new church 00:08:25.57\00:08:27.87 is now already planting new churches. 00:08:27.90\00:08:30.44 Yes. 00:08:30.47\00:08:31.81 So they become not only mother, their mother church, 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.64 but it's going to be a grandmother. 00:08:34.68\00:08:36.01 Wonderful. 00:08:36.04\00:08:37.38 And to keep that moving, it's a lot of work, 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.82 but it's the way. 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.95 Now I remember there was one group 00:08:43.99\00:08:45.72 that was basically just running 00:08:45.75\00:08:47.89 children's activities on Sabbath morning. 00:08:47.92\00:08:50.03 Do you remember that project? I remember that project. 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.93 Yeah. 00:08:51.96\00:08:53.29 Now, some would say, well, 00:08:53.33\00:08:54.66 in church you should actually be 00:08:54.70\00:08:56.33 sitting in a pew worshiping God, 00:08:56.36\00:08:57.70 but this look totally different? 00:08:57.73\00:08:59.07 Oh, yeah. 00:08:59.10\00:09:00.44 And then they're many more totally different church plants 00:09:00.47\00:09:02.04 also in the past and present 00:09:02.07\00:09:04.64 because it's no way to have a select service 00:09:04.67\00:09:08.74 with all kinds of songs and music, 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.95 they should go very well. 00:09:10.98\00:09:13.35 But they've only used self there, 00:09:13.38\00:09:15.38 it's not the object. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.25 We have to learn to touch the community, 00:09:17.29\00:09:19.92 to learn to touch real life. 00:09:19.95\00:09:22.26 And that's where projects are a success 00:09:22.29\00:09:25.09 when they really itch, you know, how to say. 00:09:25.13\00:09:29.76 They stretch where it itches. That's right. 00:09:29.80\00:09:32.03 They say, well, there's a need here we can help. 00:09:32.07\00:09:35.47 And it's not only that we help people 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.17 we want to reach, 00:09:37.21\00:09:38.61 often it's the way by asking others to help us 00:09:38.64\00:09:41.84 to do something good for community. 00:09:41.88\00:09:45.28 And then the ones who are helping us, 00:09:45.31\00:09:46.92 they are the target group 00:09:46.95\00:09:48.28 that gets to learn to know Christ. 00:09:48.32\00:09:50.79 I remember that, because I remember your, 00:09:50.82\00:09:52.99 at least one of your daughters was at university 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.72 and they were doing 00:09:54.76\00:09:56.09 some sort of a community activity 00:09:56.12\00:09:57.46 and she stressed 00:09:57.49\00:09:58.83 that the important things we involve non believers 00:09:58.86\00:10:01.23 in what we were doing. 00:10:01.26\00:10:02.60 Yeah. They asked their friends. 00:10:02.63\00:10:04.17 Please help us, we're doing this 00:10:04.20\00:10:05.53 or we're doing that. 00:10:05.57\00:10:06.90 And by doing that, 00:10:06.94\00:10:08.27 they got into contact with one another 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.07 and you start talking and you can invite them 00:10:10.11\00:10:12.54 to something more biblical, but it takes time. 00:10:12.57\00:10:15.61 Right. 00:10:15.64\00:10:16.98 You first you have to find trust 00:10:17.01\00:10:18.78 to get to know the community. 00:10:18.81\00:10:21.02 The community you experienced 00:10:21.05\00:10:25.05 when you are a family of God together. 00:10:25.09\00:10:26.99 Yes. 00:10:27.02\00:10:28.56 Rudy, give me an experience of somebody 00:10:28.59\00:10:31.46 whose life was touched through church planting? 00:10:31.49\00:10:34.76 Well, I remember a guy who was a student, 00:10:34.80\00:10:37.57 who was very atheistic 00:10:37.60\00:10:38.93 because his mother had had very bad experiences 00:10:38.97\00:10:41.57 with Christians. 00:10:41.60\00:10:42.94 She had divorced 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.31 and that was in an age when you didn't do that. 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.84 And he was a marathon runner. 00:10:46.88\00:10:51.75 Oh, yes. And... 00:10:51.78\00:10:54.85 We were... 00:10:54.88\00:10:56.25 My daughter's prayer project of doing things for others. 00:10:56.28\00:10:59.49 They were running on a track to get sponsored 00:10:59.52\00:11:04.29 to pay for a meal for homeless. 00:11:04.33\00:11:06.93 And a friend of his asked him, "Why don't you run for us?" 00:11:06.96\00:11:10.40 "Oh, I will run." 00:11:10.43\00:11:11.77 And that was his first contact with the church plant. 00:11:11.80\00:11:17.01 But when they said we are going to cook it 00:11:17.04\00:11:18.87 now that meal, you want to join us? 00:11:18.91\00:11:20.94 Now he was going to join, he liked it. 00:11:20.98\00:11:23.04 He got to learn another girl, he got engaged. 00:11:23.08\00:11:27.35 Together they started coming to the church plant, 00:11:27.38\00:11:31.92 though he was a non-believer. 00:11:31.95\00:11:34.12 Then he went to the alpha course 00:11:34.16\00:11:35.49 in other church, 00:11:35.52\00:11:37.89 but kept on having contact with a small group. 00:11:37.93\00:11:41.13 And during time he became believer, 00:11:41.16\00:11:43.26 he realized, suddenly, I am a believer. 00:11:43.30\00:11:45.43 You know, 00:11:45.47\00:11:46.80 there was no altar call whatever. 00:11:46.84\00:11:49.04 It came so far and he was baptized. 00:11:49.07\00:11:51.44 But the first contact was him stretching, running. 00:11:51.47\00:11:55.74 That's his stretch for a good cause 00:11:55.78\00:12:00.02 we were organizing. 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.38 Wonderful, great story. 00:12:01.42\00:12:03.05 Rudy, thanks for sharing with us. 00:12:03.08\00:12:04.42 You are very welcome.
