00:12 Welcome back to Portland, Maine.
00:15 If you missed any part of this program 00:17 or any of our other Mission 360 TV programs, 00:20 you can always go to m360.TV. 00:23 There you'll find our programs and many other mission stories 00:26 that you can watch at your leisure. 00:29 Next up, we traveled to learn how we can build better bridges 00:32 with our Buddhist friends. 00:34 Do you know 00:35 what the word incarnation means? 00:38 It is an interesting word. 00:41 My name is Ronald Kuhn. 00:43 I work for the Institute of World Mission. 00:46 Me and my colleagues, 00:47 we help people and we coach 00:50 and help support for them to understand how to live 00:53 and adjust in another places. 00:57 So the word incarnation. 01:01 Well, you probably, 01:03 if you know Latin words, incarnation, 01:06 carne means flesh, meat, two words with one meaning. 01:11 Flesh and meat in Spanish and Portuguese it means carne. 01:18 One word carne for food, 01:21 carne for as flesh. 01:26 So what does it mean incarnation living? 01:32 When Christ came down, He took our form, our flesh. 01:38 He became one of us, not just in our form. 01:44 Jesus came down, 01:45 He did not bring a container of food 01:48 from heaven. 01:49 He ate our food. He accepted hospitality. 01:53 He dressed the way we dress. 01:56 He didn't bring the music from heaven. 02:00 He learned how to sing the music of the people. 02:04 So at the institute we try to bring 02:08 the reality of incarnation to missionaries 02:11 as they move to another culture. 02:15 Quite often, 02:16 people don't know that they don't know. 02:22 So what did you say, Ronald, if somebody may say, 02:27 you don't know that you don't know? 02:29 Yes, 02:31 because you haven't seen things differently. 02:34 For example, 02:36 I thought eating with forks and knives 02:40 where the only right way to eat 02:43 until I learned to eat with my hands, 02:45 with chopsticks. 02:47 And now I ask which one is the best way? 02:51 Well, it works for the people that learn that way 02:56 since they were small. 02:59 So incarnation has several dimensions 03:04 is when you become one of them, 03:07 you go and you listen, and you ask questions, 03:13 you observe that you will understand. 03:17 And if you love them, you will not judge them. 03:21 You will respect. 03:23 You will suspend your preconceived ideas 03:26 that this is better. 03:27 Well, there is always something different that you can learn. 03:33 And you can add to your own culture, 03:36 your own values. 03:38 So at the institute 03:41 we help people to suspend judgment. 03:45 What they don't understand, they cannot, 03:47 they should not judge, 03:49 but they should learn and they should listen. 03:52 And only then they will connect and find bridges with people. 03:58 And as you, sort of, become one of them, 04:03 you will find wonderful things that you will grow. 04:08 You will learn their way of doing things 04:11 and in some cases it's better than your way. 04:15 Oh, how many things I have learned 04:17 as I have lived and adjusted to other places. 04:22 And as I just mentioned about food, 04:24 there's so many other things 04:26 the way people build their homes 04:28 for different weather, 04:30 the way they raise their children, 04:34 in some places very respectful, 04:38 then in our culture sometimes we're very aggressive 04:41 in some things. 04:42 So we can learn, 04:44 but we will only learn if we have an attitude of love, 04:49 an attitude to adjust and become one with them. 04:55 So if you are planning to go overseas 04:58 or becoming a missionary 05:00 or serving in a different place 05:04 and you want to learn 05:06 how to adjust different cultures, 05:08 come and spend some time with us. 05:10 You may want to join one of our institutes 05:13 and we provide information on the screen 05:15 for you to find out more about us. 05:21 As a little girl Yana knew 05:23 she wanted to be baptized one day. 05:24 At 13, she remembered her wish. 05:27 I'm going to be baptized she said. 05:30 So Yana started taking a six month baptismal class 05:33 at the Russian speaking Seventh-day Adventist Church 05:35 that our family attended in Prague, 05:37 the capital of the Czech Republic. 05:39 She excitedly told others about her plans 05:41 to give her heart to Jesus. 05:42 Olga, her 21-year-old adopted sister in Ukraine 05:46 heard the news and announced, 05:48 "I want to be baptized too." 05:50 Olga began taking baptismal classes 05:52 in Ukraine 05:54 and made plans to travel to Prague 05:55 to be baptized with Yana. 05:58 Yana was thrilled that Olga wanted to be baptized. 06:01 Now one baptism would become two. 06:04 As the day of her baptism drew near, 06:07 Yana invited relatives and friends 06:09 to come watch at the church. 06:10 She also invited her 17 classmates 06:13 from the only Adventist school in Prague. 06:16 "I'm very excited about being baptized," 06:18 Yana said, 06:20 "This is a big celebration 06:21 and I would be happy if you came." 06:24 The school principal marveled at Yana's excitement 06:26 as she spoke with her classmates, 06:29 many of whom belong 06:30 to other Christian denominations 06:32 or didn't go to church at all. 06:33 Yana's face was shining with joy. 06:37 Finally the big day arrived, 06:39 relatives and friends packed the church. 06:42 Yana was so happy. 06:43 When she came out of the water, 06:45 she knew her dream had come true. 06:48 The pastor asked 06:49 if anyone wanted to be baptized next time. 06:52 Yana's younger sister, 06:54 Esther immediately left to her feet 06:56 and ran to the front of the church, 06:58 two teenage girls joined her. 07:00 Yana was thrilled. 07:03 Now one baptism would become five baptisms. 07:08 Several of Yana's classmates 07:09 accepted her invitation to attend the baptism. 07:12 After a little while, three of those classmates, 07:15 two girls and one boy 07:17 decided that they also wanted to be baptized. 07:20 Yana was thrilled. 07:22 Now one baptism would become eight. 07:26 But that wasn't the end. 07:28 Yana has an older sister named Diana, 07:31 who was 21 07:32 at a university student in Ukraine. 07:34 Diana traveled to Prague to watch Yana's baptism. 07:37 Afterwards, she said, 07:39 "You know, I also want to be baptized." 07:42 A month later, Diana was baptized in Ukraine. 07:46 What is the power of one baptism? 07:48 The Holy Spirit 07:50 used Yana's decision to be baptized, 07:52 to touch the hearts of eight other people. 07:55 One baptism became nine baptisms. 08:00 "After I was baptized, 08:02 other people also wanted to be baptized," 08:05 Yana said.
