Your mission offerings at work in Kinshasa in the Congo, 00:00:36.33\00:00:40.10 the mission field of Maine in the United States, 00:00:40.14\00:00:43.57 and a children's mission story from Europe, 00:00:43.61\00:00:45.91 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:45.94\00:00:48.44 Hello, and welcome to Mission 360. 00:01:20.61\00:01:22.41 I'm Gary Krause. 00:01:22.44\00:01:23.85 Today's program is coming to you 00:01:23.88\00:01:25.41 from Portland, Maine, in the United States. 00:01:25.45\00:01:28.48 And directly behind me on the street, 00:01:28.52\00:01:31.12 the Bracket Street School was located. 00:01:31.15\00:01:34.19 And in the 1800s 00:01:34.22\00:01:35.72 Ellen White is believed to have attended here 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.43 when she was just a young girl 00:01:38.46\00:01:39.79 because the family live just around the corner 00:01:39.83\00:01:42.20 in Spruce Street. 00:01:42.23\00:01:43.97 When Ellen White was nine years of age, 00:01:44.00\00:01:46.33 another student threw a rock, hit her in the face, 00:01:46.37\00:01:49.97 and Ellen was unconscious 00:01:50.01\00:01:51.41 and then took many months to recover. 00:01:51.44\00:01:53.44 In fact, it's thought 00:01:53.48\00:01:55.01 that perhaps she never really fully recovered 00:01:55.04\00:01:56.75 from that incident. 00:01:56.78\00:01:59.38 Ellen White, of course, 00:01:59.41\00:02:00.75 was the one who talked about Christ method of ministry, 00:02:00.78\00:02:03.12 which is the blueprint for Adventist mission today. 00:02:03.15\00:02:06.35 And on today's program, 00:02:06.39\00:02:07.72 we're going to look at mission all around the world. 00:02:07.76\00:02:09.46 But first up, 00:02:09.49\00:02:10.83 we're going to travel to the Congo 00:02:10.86\00:02:12.43 to the great city of Kinshasa 00:02:12.46\00:02:14.70 to see a children's shelter that was built 00:02:14.73\00:02:17.07 because of your 13th Sabbath Offerings. 00:02:17.10\00:02:21.24 What's the purpose of a lamb shelter? 00:02:21.27\00:02:23.07 It's a safe place for lambs to grow strong and healthy. 00:02:23.10\00:02:27.18 In this Congolese Church, 00:02:27.21\00:02:28.54 children are called lambs 00:02:28.58\00:02:30.15 and have their own lamb shelter, 00:02:30.18\00:02:31.71 where they can worship together on Sabbath. 00:02:31.75\00:02:34.15 Here they are empowered to be young leaders. 00:02:34.18\00:02:36.89 Misbah is the pastor son. 00:02:51.93\00:02:53.90 He was nine years old 00:02:53.94\00:02:55.27 when he and his friends began worshiping 00:02:55.30\00:02:56.64 in this lamb shelter. 00:02:56.67\00:02:58.41 Having a place of their own 00:02:58.44\00:02:59.77 gives the children ownership of the Sabbath School 00:02:59.81\00:03:01.91 and worship service. 00:03:01.94\00:03:03.55 Like his father, 00:03:03.58\00:03:04.91 Misbah happily leads on Sabbath mornings. 00:03:04.95\00:03:07.72 These children are so grateful 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.28 for the gifts they received in 2013 00:03:09.32\00:03:11.65 when a portion of the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:03:11.69\00:03:14.06 was used to build several lamb shelters 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.36 in Kinshasa. 00:03:16.39\00:03:17.73 With this new building, this young group has grown 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.50 and welcomes new faces all the time. 00:03:20.53\00:03:22.96 Next door, membership in the main church 00:03:30.34\00:03:32.17 has also seen growth. 00:03:32.21\00:03:33.91 Misbah's father is the head pastor. 00:03:33.94\00:03:36.14 He welcomes guests and members to church this Sabbath. 00:03:36.18\00:03:42.08 This church 00:03:42.12\00:03:43.45 offers an interpreter for the deaf. 00:03:43.49\00:03:45.09 Thomas gladly uses sign language 00:03:45.12\00:03:47.16 to share the message during Sabbath School 00:03:47.19\00:03:49.29 and the sermon. 00:03:49.32\00:03:50.66 He wants to make sure there are no barriers 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.79 to knowing Jesus 00:03:52.83\00:03:54.16 and being part of their Adventist community. 00:03:54.20\00:03:56.97 Through song and study, they celebrate their blessings, 00:03:57.00\00:03:59.77 and pray for the mission challenges 00:03:59.80\00:04:01.40 of the city of Kinshasa. 00:04:01.44\00:04:03.47 This large city is the capital 00:04:03.51\00:04:05.27 of the Democratic Republic of Congo 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.38 and Adventist Churches are scattered throughout. 00:04:07.41\00:04:09.88 Before the lamb shelter was built, 00:04:13.62\00:04:15.55 children could only meet outside under a tree 00:04:15.58\00:04:18.22 or in the entrance way of the church. 00:04:18.25\00:04:20.72 These areas didn't provide much protection 00:04:20.76\00:04:22.66 from the hot sun or heavy rain. 00:04:22.69\00:04:24.49 So when Adventist members in Kinshasa 00:04:24.53\00:04:26.59 learned of the 13th Sabbath Offering project, 00:04:26.63\00:04:29.16 they were so excited. 00:04:29.20\00:04:30.93 I'm really happy to see that the word church 00:04:30.97\00:04:35.97 is going to give us a support, 00:04:36.00\00:04:38.54 so that we can realize this project. 00:04:38.57\00:04:42.74 Thanks to your generous giving to the offering, 00:04:42.78\00:04:44.91 the project was completed, 00:04:44.95\00:04:46.51 and the children now have a dedicated space 00:04:46.55\00:04:48.85 to worship. 00:04:48.88\00:04:50.22 Please pray for this mission work 00:04:50.25\00:04:51.59 in this city. 00:04:51.62\00:04:52.95 With more than 11 million people, 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.32 there is a great need for Jesus in such a vast urban area. 00:04:54.36\00:04:58.49 Adventist in Kinshasa thank you for your contribution 00:04:58.53\00:05:01.43 to the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:05:01.46\00:05:03.30 and look forward to Jesus' soon return. 00:05:03.33\00:05:06.30 God bless them. This is my wish. 00:05:06.33\00:05:09.77 I think that one day we will meet together 00:05:09.80\00:05:13.74 in the Kingdom of our Father. 00:05:13.78\00:05:16.78 My guest is Scott Christiansen who is the evangelist 00:05:34.00\00:05:36.87 and communication director 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.23 for the Northern New England Conference 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.20 here in the United States. 00:05:40.24\00:05:41.57 Scott, thanks for joining us. It's my pleasure. 00:05:41.60\00:05:43.64 In a former life you were a missionary. 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.84 You served in the country of Mongolia. 00:05:45.87\00:05:49.21 Describe when that was and why it was so important? 00:05:49.24\00:05:53.08 Why it's such a critical time for the Adventist Church? 00:05:53.11\00:05:55.65 Well, you say a former life 00:05:55.68\00:05:57.02 and, you know, I mean it was 25 years ago. 00:05:57.05\00:05:59.69 Oh, wow, 25 years ago, actually, 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.66 that we landed in Mongolia, almost to the day, actually. 00:06:01.69\00:06:06.49 And it was a different world at that time. 00:06:06.53\00:06:09.90 Communism had collapsed, not too long before that. 00:06:09.93\00:06:14.40 And Mongolia was part of the Soviet Union. 00:06:14.44\00:06:17.97 And they were attacked, they were dominated, 00:06:18.01\00:06:20.34 their economy was dominated, 00:06:20.38\00:06:21.71 their government was directed by the Soviet Union. 00:06:21.74\00:06:24.41 They were not actually... 00:06:24.45\00:06:27.45 They still have their own flag, 00:06:27.48\00:06:28.82 they still have their own territory 00:06:28.85\00:06:30.19 because the Soviet Union want another vote in the UN. 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.02 So they were never absorbed by the Soviet Union. 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.02 But other than that, 00:06:35.06\00:06:36.59 the distinction was meaningless 00:06:36.62\00:06:38.33 because they were controlled by the Soviet Union. 00:06:38.36\00:06:40.96 So when the Soviet Union collapsed, 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.83 Mongolia completely pancaked. 00:06:43.87\00:06:47.87 The hospitals stopped working, the schools stopped working, 00:06:47.90\00:06:50.41 the food supply stopped working, 00:06:50.44\00:06:51.77 it was a terrible, terrible time. 00:06:51.81\00:06:54.38 And yet it was, 00:06:54.41\00:06:56.04 in one sense a good time 00:06:56.08\00:06:57.41 because for the first time in over 75 years 00:06:57.45\00:07:00.22 the country was open to people 00:07:00.25\00:07:02.12 coming in missionaries. 00:07:02.15\00:07:05.95 The government wasn't happy to see them necessarily, 00:07:05.99\00:07:08.22 certainly not the secret police, 00:07:08.26\00:07:09.76 because they still had momentum going, you know, 00:07:09.79\00:07:12.06 from the Soviet times, and yet the country opened. 00:07:12.09\00:07:15.43 And that's when ADRA started, 00:07:15.46\00:07:17.77 that's when my family and I went to Mongolia 00:07:17.80\00:07:20.47 with our two little kids to start ADRA. 00:07:20.50\00:07:23.71 And to begin work in a country 00:07:23.74\00:07:27.08 that otherwise 00:07:27.11\00:07:28.44 was just not letting people in it, 00:07:28.48\00:07:30.01 who had no knowledge of Christianity, 00:07:30.05\00:07:32.21 had even lost their own knowledge 00:07:32.25\00:07:33.88 of what of their Buddhist past. 00:07:33.92\00:07:35.55 So it was a blank slate, if you will. 00:07:35.58\00:07:37.79 But full of suspicion, minds full of propaganda, 00:07:37.82\00:07:40.72 that was never true. 00:07:40.76\00:07:42.09 It was troubling. 00:07:42.12\00:07:46.03 And it was difficult, 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.66 and it was full of opportunity at that moment in time. 00:07:47.70\00:07:51.73 And that the Adventist Church 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.37 at that stage numbered in the thousands, I guess? 00:07:53.40\00:07:55.94 Oh, it was huge. 00:07:55.97\00:07:57.31 Yeah, actually, at that point, there was one baptized member. 00:07:57.34\00:08:01.48 Right. 00:08:01.51\00:08:02.84 In fact, Robert Folkenberg, 00:08:02.88\00:08:04.21 there were two AFM missionaries in the country. 00:08:04.25\00:08:05.88 There were... Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:08:05.91\00:08:07.38 Thank you. Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.28 And they were there as stealth missionaries. 00:08:09.32\00:08:11.85 And they were ready to baptize their first member, 00:08:11.89\00:08:15.49 a young woman named Dabahu, 00:08:15.52\00:08:16.86 precious young woman named Dabahu. 00:08:16.89\00:08:18.66 And they invited the church president, 00:08:18.69\00:08:20.46 Bob Folkenberg, 00:08:20.50\00:08:21.83 to the country to do the baptism. 00:08:21.86\00:08:23.93 So while he was there, 00:08:23.97\00:08:25.93 he met with the President of Mongolia 00:08:25.97\00:08:27.84 and said, 00:08:27.87\00:08:29.20 "We're going to start ADRA." 00:08:29.24\00:08:30.57 And that's how ADRA got started. 00:08:30.61\00:08:32.67 We were in there shortly thereafter. 00:08:32.71\00:08:34.58 But when we arrived, still just one member, 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.28 baptized member and five or six young, 00:08:37.31\00:08:41.28 young kid, I mean, we're talking 15, 16, 17 00:08:41.32\00:08:44.52 young, young kids that were curious, 00:08:44.55\00:08:48.46 but certainly hadn't been baptized, 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.03 weren't members, weren't committed. 00:08:50.06\00:08:52.86 And yet, upon those young kids, 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.06 God built the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Mongolia. 00:08:56.10\00:08:59.20 And today, there's thousands and thousands of members. 00:08:59.23\00:09:03.00 You could write a book of your experiences 00:09:03.04\00:09:05.44 in Mongolia, that I'm sure. 00:09:05.47\00:09:07.44 When you look back, 00:09:07.48\00:09:08.81 and you look at the way God has lead. 00:09:08.84\00:09:10.68 Is there something that really stands out 00:09:10.71\00:09:12.68 that you can share with us? 00:09:12.71\00:09:14.82 Well, actually, yeah, and I'll try and do it quickly. 00:09:14.85\00:09:16.62 It's a long story 00:09:16.65\00:09:17.99 that I'm going to try and condense. 00:09:18.02\00:09:19.49 But when we went to Mongolia, 00:09:19.52\00:09:23.89 we were the first international organization 00:09:23.93\00:09:25.89 to sign and I speak of ADRA here. 00:09:25.93\00:09:27.66 ADRA was the first international organization 00:09:27.70\00:09:29.63 to sign an agreement. 00:09:29.66\00:09:31.27 Interestingly enough, 00:09:31.30\00:09:33.17 there, the government had these huge expectations, 00:09:33.20\00:09:36.27 and yet ADRA had very limited capacity 00:09:36.30\00:09:38.31 and no budget 00:09:38.34\00:09:39.67 and it was difficult to get started. 00:09:39.71\00:09:42.81 I had one employee, and his name was Monk Jurgal, 00:09:42.84\00:09:47.28 an avowed atheist 00:09:47.32\00:09:48.65 who later became a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. 00:09:48.68\00:09:50.95 And the Adventist Frontier Mission people, 00:09:50.99\00:09:53.72 they were working very quietly 00:09:53.76\00:09:55.09 and they had a student missionary 00:09:55.12\00:09:56.46 named Tristan. 00:09:56.49\00:09:57.83 And Tristan was there working... 00:09:57.86\00:10:00.50 The government had told me, 00:10:00.53\00:10:02.16 "Scott, you can't render any assistance 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.37 to the street children, 00:10:04.40\00:10:05.73 otherwise we'll throw you out of the country." 00:10:05.77\00:10:07.17 And there were thousands of street children 00:10:07.20\00:10:09.24 in the country who is so very poor. 00:10:09.27\00:10:11.21 And they wrenched my heart. 00:10:11.24\00:10:12.81 I wanted to do something for these street children. 00:10:12.84\00:10:15.28 Well, what I did was, 00:10:15.31\00:10:16.64 I took cases of power bars that had been delivered by ADRA 00:10:16.68\00:10:19.75 and some children's clothing and I gave them to Tristan. 00:10:19.78\00:10:22.48 And he and some of the church members 00:10:22.52\00:10:24.29 were handing out these things to the street children. 00:10:24.32\00:10:26.79 And so all of this was going on. 00:10:26.82\00:10:29.72 And we were making progress. 00:10:29.76\00:10:33.23 And Tristan was doing quite a lot. 00:10:33.26\00:10:35.33 But Tristan was also doing some things 00:10:35.36\00:10:36.73 I didn't know about. 00:10:36.77\00:10:38.23 He was giving English languages 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.40 to members of parliament. 00:10:40.44\00:10:41.94 And he was telling them, 00:10:41.97\00:10:43.30 he was associate director of ADRA. 00:10:43.34\00:10:45.71 And it turns out, this young man 00:10:45.74\00:10:47.58 was fleeing from the FBI 00:10:47.61\00:10:49.58 and had pretended to become an Adventist 00:10:49.61\00:10:51.95 and had pretended to be converted 00:10:51.98\00:10:55.58 and to want to join AFM. 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.29 He had targeted AFM 00:10:58.32\00:10:59.65 as a American organization in a country 00:10:59.69\00:11:02.56 that he could not be extradited from. 00:11:02.59\00:11:05.03 Well, all of this fell apart, the FBI found him. 00:11:05.06\00:11:07.63 The government of Mongolia arrested him. 00:11:07.66\00:11:10.10 And when that happened, 00:11:10.13\00:11:11.53 all the suspicions came out 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.44 that they culturally harbored towards Christians. 00:11:13.47\00:11:17.17 And the news was full of reports. 00:11:17.21\00:11:19.71 ADRA is bringing criminals to the country 00:11:19.74\00:11:22.24 and the Adventist Church is trying to corrupt our youth 00:11:22.28\00:11:24.25 and ADRA is laundering the money. 00:11:24.28\00:11:27.25 Well, I had this one employee Monk Jurgal, 00:11:27.28\00:11:29.82 and he was terrified. 00:11:29.85\00:11:32.12 He knew he was going to be arrested. 00:11:32.15\00:11:33.56 He wanted to flee to the countryside. 00:11:33.59\00:11:35.22 He was telling me, "I was going to be a thrown 00:11:35.26\00:11:38.16 out of the country." 00:11:38.19\00:11:39.63 And the AFM people were... 00:11:39.66\00:11:41.56 You know, their house was on fire. 00:11:41.60\00:11:43.60 Things were just terrible. 00:11:43.63\00:11:46.03 Well, we all went to our knees. 00:11:46.07\00:11:48.17 I was begging Monk Jurgal not to leave 00:11:48.20\00:11:50.44 'cause I couldn't speak Mongolian. 00:11:50.47\00:11:51.84 He was my only link and he knew the government, 00:11:51.87\00:11:53.94 he knew his way out. 00:11:53.98\00:11:55.51 Finally, I told him, "Look, Monk Jurgal, 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.05 if you stay you will see God work a miracle." 00:11:57.08\00:11:59.88 Well, he sent his family to the countryside. 00:11:59.91\00:12:01.75 He stayed. 00:12:01.78\00:12:03.12 We worked our way through it. 00:12:03.15\00:12:05.02 I sent a fax off to ADRA 00:12:05.05\00:12:06.65 because the phone links were so bad. 00:12:06.69\00:12:08.02 I sent a fax off to ADRA saying, 00:12:08.06\00:12:09.72 this is what's happened. 00:12:09.76\00:12:11.09 Everything's collapsing. 00:12:11.13\00:12:12.46 We've only been here a couple months, 00:12:12.49\00:12:13.83 all of this terrible things are happening. 00:12:13.86\00:12:15.20 And almost immediately, 00:12:15.23\00:12:16.56 even though they were 12 hours away, 00:12:16.60\00:12:17.93 almost immediately, I got an answer back saying, 00:12:17.97\00:12:22.34 "You are on the world prayer chain. 00:12:22.37\00:12:24.01 Everyone's praying for you. 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.37 Not only that, but we've swept away 00:12:25.41\00:12:26.74 the budget limits 00:12:26.78\00:12:28.11 and we've sent you $50,000 to begin doing the projects 00:12:28.14\00:12:30.81 you were sent there to do. 00:12:30.85\00:12:32.18 So go to work." 00:12:32.21\00:12:34.98 And we did go to work. 00:12:35.02\00:12:36.95 And we weren't thrown out of the country. 00:12:36.99\00:12:39.39 The whole thing blew over with a lot of ulcers, 00:12:39.42\00:12:42.06 but it blew over. 00:12:42.09\00:12:43.76 Monk Jurgal saw a miracle. 00:12:43.79\00:12:45.73 In fact, it was only three months later 00:12:45.76\00:12:48.06 that the President was on TV thanking ADRA for the work 00:12:48.10\00:12:51.03 that we were doing. 00:12:51.07\00:12:52.83 ADRA really got its start in the middle of catastrophe. 00:12:52.87\00:12:56.20 And the church, that little church 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.67 with those teenagers went through fire, 00:12:57.71\00:13:01.24 but the teenagers who remained became church leaders 00:13:01.28\00:13:05.01 and our church leaders today. 00:13:05.05\00:13:07.02 And Monk Jurgal became 00:13:07.05\00:13:08.78 the first Seventh-day Adventist Mongolian pastor. 00:13:08.82\00:13:11.72 So when everything was falling apart, 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.66 that's when God was bringing it together. 00:13:13.69\00:13:15.79 That is a great story. 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.49 Thanks so much for sharing with us, Scott.
