Welcome back to Panama City. 00:00:04.93\00:00:06.43 And behind me you can see the headquarters 00:00:06.47\00:00:08.64 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:00:08.67\00:00:10.34 here in Panama. 00:00:10.37\00:00:11.71 Next up, we travel back to Silver Spring, Maryland 00:00:11.74\00:00:14.78 to hear the story of the pioneer 00:00:14.81\00:00:17.31 of Adventist work in Venezuela. 00:00:17.35\00:00:19.81 My guest today is Dr. Myrna Costa 00:00:19.85\00:00:22.05 from the inter-American Division. 00:00:22.08\00:00:24.12 Dr. Costa is one of the regional editors 00:00:24.15\00:00:26.72 for the encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists. 00:00:26.76\00:00:29.82 And this brand new reference work 00:00:29.86\00:00:31.73 is overseen by the Office of Archives, 00:00:31.76\00:00:34.00 Statistics, and Research. 00:00:34.03\00:00:35.70 It'll be full of thousands 00:00:35.73\00:00:38.33 of entries in a variety of topics, 00:00:38.37\00:00:41.30 including articles on mission work. 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.67 And Dr. Costa, thank you so much 00:00:43.71\00:00:46.07 for joining us on Mission 360 TV today. 00:00:46.11\00:00:48.24 Thank you very much. 00:00:48.28\00:00:49.71 Today, you're going to tell us 00:00:49.74\00:00:51.08 a story about a missionary named Rafael Lopez Miranda. 00:00:51.11\00:00:56.18 So why did you choose 00:00:56.22\00:00:57.75 this particular missionary to talk about? 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.96 Well, that's a good question 00:01:00.99\00:01:02.76 because the author of this article 00:01:02.79\00:01:05.26 is a very good friend of mine, Dr. Lourdes Morales-Gudmundson. 00:01:05.29\00:01:09.00 And she happens to be 00:01:09.03\00:01:10.37 the granddaughter of this missionary, 00:01:10.40\00:01:13.03 Rafael Lopez Miranda. 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.14 So may I talk to you about her? Sure! 00:01:15.17\00:01:18.74 Because she has a book about him, 00:01:18.77\00:01:22.31 Rafael Lopez Miranda, and it's called 00:01:22.34\00:01:24.68 "El Viajero," which is "The Traveler." 00:01:24.71\00:01:27.65 She will have a new edition this year in English. 00:01:27.68\00:01:30.89 And this book is all about him. 00:01:30.92\00:01:34.66 But in the article 00:01:34.69\00:01:36.02 of the encyclopedia will be very short. 00:01:36.06\00:01:37.86 Right, right. 00:01:37.89\00:01:39.23 So if people want the full expanded version, 00:01:39.26\00:01:42.10 they can read that book. 00:01:42.13\00:01:43.47 Exactly. Great. Great. 00:01:43.50\00:01:45.00 So talking about Lopez Miranda, 00:01:45.03\00:01:47.84 was there ever a time 00:01:47.87\00:01:49.20 that he experienced God's protection 00:01:49.24\00:01:51.57 as he served as a missionary? 00:01:51.61\00:01:52.97 Yes, many times. Many times. 00:01:53.01\00:01:55.84 When he was 10 or 12 years old, he encountered two things. 00:01:55.88\00:02:00.95 He was at the beach and there was a shark, 00:02:00.98\00:02:03.75 almost got him. 00:02:03.79\00:02:05.12 And then another time in a zoo, 00:02:05.15\00:02:07.92 a lion escaped and came charging 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.19 at him but he escaped. 00:02:10.23\00:02:12.19 So we know that God 00:02:12.23\00:02:14.23 had something special for this little boy. 00:02:14.26\00:02:17.30 When he was a teenager, 00:02:17.33\00:02:20.34 his father died in a shipwreck. 00:02:20.37\00:02:23.67 That was sad. 00:02:23.71\00:02:25.84 He was given the task 00:02:25.87\00:02:27.58 of taking care of his mom and sister, 00:02:27.61\00:02:30.55 and that was too much for him. 00:02:30.58\00:02:31.91 So he started drinking heavily. 00:02:31.95\00:02:34.72 And until he met, who was going to be his wife, 00:02:34.75\00:02:38.49 the name was Esperanza Gortigo. 00:02:38.52\00:02:40.96 And he stopped drinking, 00:02:40.99\00:02:42.46 he married her, they were very happy. 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.43 They had a little boy, the name was Rafaelito. 00:02:45.46\00:02:48.10 But then again, sadness happened 00:02:48.13\00:02:49.76 because when he was six, the boy died. 00:02:49.80\00:02:52.80 And again, he started drinking 00:02:52.83\00:02:54.87 and some family violence occurred. 00:02:54.90\00:02:59.71 But God had other plans for him. 00:02:59.74\00:03:02.24 Because one day when he was walking home, 00:03:02.28\00:03:04.81 he came across some papers on the floor, 00:03:04.85\00:03:06.51 he picked them up. 00:03:06.55\00:03:07.88 And it's happened to be two pages of the Bible. 00:03:07.92\00:03:10.79 And John 3:16 was there. 00:03:10.82\00:03:14.52 And he read it. 00:03:14.56\00:03:15.89 And it really got to him through what he went. 00:03:15.92\00:03:20.00 And the next day, colporteur came to his place 00:03:20.03\00:03:24.13 and offered him some books. 00:03:24.17\00:03:25.50 And also, again, talk to him about John 3:16. 00:03:25.53\00:03:30.31 So God had plan for him ever since. 00:03:30.34\00:03:32.87 And his conversion was instantaneous. 00:03:32.91\00:03:37.21 It just changes total 00:03:37.25\00:03:41.68 his way of life and his family, 00:03:41.72\00:03:44.59 just because the change that had occurred in him, 00:03:44.62\00:03:48.26 they all converted too. 00:03:48.29\00:03:50.06 Wow! Praise God! 00:03:50.09\00:03:52.29 Sounds like God was really leading despite 00:03:52.33\00:03:55.10 the tragedies he faced, losses he had faced. 00:03:55.13\00:03:58.47 Sounds like God still had plans for him. 00:03:58.50\00:04:00.04 And he was open to God's leading. 00:04:00.07\00:04:02.30 Yes. And he became a colporteur. 00:04:02.34\00:04:04.17 So he distributed books along the island. 00:04:04.21\00:04:07.78 And he went to the American Republic, 00:04:07.81\00:04:09.24 and after that he went to Venezuela, 00:04:09.28\00:04:11.25 a place where the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:04:11.28\00:04:13.62 had not been there. 00:04:13.65\00:04:15.55 And he just felt the need to go 00:04:15.58\00:04:18.25 and into the jungles of Venezuela 00:04:18.29\00:04:21.59 to talk to them about Jesus soon coming 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.43 and distribute books. 00:04:24.46\00:04:27.76 So one day though, 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.60 after arriving in San Cristobal, 00:04:30.63\00:04:34.47 he thought he was, in fact, let's go back, 00:04:34.50\00:04:37.84 he encountered a death threat. 00:04:37.87\00:04:40.98 Yeah, there was a priest that didn't want him to be there. 00:04:41.01\00:04:44.68 So they told him, 00:04:44.71\00:04:46.41 "You better leave or I'm going to have you kill." 00:04:46.45\00:04:49.05 Well, of course, he didn't pay any attention 00:04:49.08\00:04:51.35 and he kept doing his work. 00:04:51.39\00:04:53.56 At that time, 00:04:53.59\00:04:54.92 he was already known as the traveler 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.23 and because he was travelling from place to place, 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.66 so they call him and nicknamed him, 00:04:59.69\00:05:01.86 the traveler. 00:05:01.90\00:05:04.37 He was never to return back to Puerto Rico. 00:05:04.40\00:05:07.30 He was born in Puerto Rico, I forgot to tell you that. 00:05:07.34\00:05:09.97 And that's one thing that why I chosen Puerto Rico too. 00:05:10.01\00:05:15.64 He was never to return. 00:05:15.68\00:05:18.28 And his wife begged him to come back 00:05:18.31\00:05:19.98 and soon ask him to come back, but he didn't. 00:05:20.02\00:05:22.95 And his wife sent American flag to Venezuela, 00:05:22.98\00:05:29.39 the mission to tell them that he was an American citizen, 00:05:29.42\00:05:33.50 just in case something would happen. 00:05:33.53\00:05:36.06 Right, right. 00:05:36.10\00:05:37.43 So it sounded like he faced 00:05:37.47\00:05:38.83 a number of serious threats events with life. 00:05:38.87\00:05:42.00 Were there any other dangers to his life that he faced? 00:05:42.04\00:05:45.01 Yes, as a matter of fact, 00:05:45.04\00:05:46.37 at one time he was in a restaurant, 00:05:46.41\00:05:48.88 and he ordered some food and the waiter came, 00:05:48.91\00:05:51.18 brought him some food. 00:05:51.21\00:05:52.55 And when the plate was in front of him, 00:05:52.58\00:05:55.12 he started praying, and when he opened his eyes, 00:05:55.15\00:05:58.85 he saw that the waiter had taken his food away 00:05:58.89\00:06:01.26 and was bringing him another plate. 00:06:01.29\00:06:03.22 And he asked, "Why?" 00:06:03.26\00:06:04.59 And he said, "Well, I had been instructed to poison you. 00:06:04.63\00:06:07.60 But because I saw you 00:06:07.63\00:06:08.96 and I heard you praying, I couldn't do this." 00:06:09.00\00:06:11.23 Wow! 00:06:11.27\00:06:13.37 So it sounds like God was really preserving his life 00:06:13.40\00:06:16.27 throughout many dangers that he faced. 00:06:16.30\00:06:18.67 Yeah, but at the end, he was staying at this inn. 00:06:18.71\00:06:23.04 And one day, the owner told him, 00:06:23.08\00:06:27.02 he had to leave. 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.48 And he said, "Seņora, we'll see you. 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.85 I'll see you another day at that eternal morning, 00:06:31.89\00:06:34.92 we will see each other again." 00:06:34.96\00:06:36.73 And she knew that something was gonna happen. 00:06:36.76\00:06:38.93 And sure enough, when he reached 00:06:38.96\00:06:40.76 the creek nearby, 00:06:40.80\00:06:43.23 there were some assassins waiting in the shadows. 00:06:43.26\00:06:46.87 And yes, they shot and killed him. 00:06:46.90\00:06:51.14 And to this day, my friend, 00:06:51.17\00:06:53.51 Lourdes, she has the hat that he was wearing, 00:06:53.54\00:06:57.41 with bullet holes and everything. 00:06:57.45\00:06:58.95 So, yes, it's tragic, 00:06:58.98\00:07:04.15 how our colporteurs 00:07:04.19\00:07:05.89 and our missionaries have suffered. 00:07:05.92\00:07:09.06 Right, right. 00:07:09.09\00:07:10.69 But sounds like despite 00:07:10.73\00:07:12.06 everything he was faithful to God, 00:07:12.09\00:07:14.13 literally until death just like Paul 00:07:14.16\00:07:17.70 and a number of other biblical figures 00:07:17.73\00:07:19.17 where it sounds, like, his impact, 00:07:19.20\00:07:21.77 his legacy effects even those, 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.81 you know, personally today like your friends. 00:07:23.84\00:07:26.41 Thank you so much Dr. Costa for sharing the story 00:07:26.44\00:07:28.98 of Rafael Lopez Miranda. 00:07:29.01\00:07:31.01 Thank you. Thank you for having me. 00:07:31.05\00:07:32.95 Reporting for Mission 360, I'm Chelsy Tyler. 00:07:32.98\00:07:36.12 Next up, we travelled to the trans-European region 00:07:52.60\00:07:55.47 to learn more about 00:07:55.50\00:07:56.84 this quarter's 13th Sabbath Offerings. 00:07:56.87\00:07:59.37 So we spoke to some of the leaders 00:08:06.92\00:08:10.15 in municipalities, the mayors and these things 00:08:10.19\00:08:13.25 through representatives, 00:08:13.29\00:08:15.46 and we asked them 00:08:15.49\00:08:16.83 what are the real needs in the community. 00:08:16.86\00:08:20.13 And one area that really stuck out 00:08:20.16\00:08:24.03 as a major need was loneliness. 00:08:24.07\00:08:28.74 In Sortland, Norway, loneliness is a key challenge 00:08:42.52\00:08:46.32 among both the elderly and the young. 00:08:46.35\00:08:49.16 About one third of the teenagers 00:08:49.19\00:08:50.96 here say they feel lonely. 00:08:50.99\00:08:53.23 So this is why we started thinking, 00:08:53.26\00:08:56.46 well, what can we as a church do to contribute 00:08:56.50\00:08:59.47 and meet that need. 00:08:59.50\00:09:01.87 We're trying and failing and seeing what works, 00:09:06.14\00:09:10.78 what doesn't work and through that learning 00:09:10.81\00:09:13.98 that don't necessarily know the name of God and who He is. 00:09:14.02\00:09:19.89 But a lot of people do believe there is a God. 00:09:19.92\00:09:23.32 And so, belief in God 00:09:23.36\00:09:28.53 is quite typical at the same time 00:09:28.56\00:09:31.43 as traditional church is seen as problematic 00:09:31.47\00:09:35.97 in regard to the core cultural values. 00:09:36.00\00:09:38.87 This region was one of the key areas 00:09:38.91\00:09:42.14 for Adventism in Norway. 00:09:42.18\00:09:44.25 We had areas here with the highest density 00:09:44.28\00:09:46.21 of Adventists in all of Norway. 00:09:46.25\00:09:49.28 Now our churches are dying. 00:09:49.32\00:09:52.75 Similar to many places around the world, 00:10:03.47\00:10:05.67 the church has lost its foothold, 00:10:05.70\00:10:08.04 struggling to be known as 00:10:08.07\00:10:09.40 an integral part of the community. 00:10:09.44\00:10:11.74 Can the church still be relevant here in Sortland? 00:10:11.77\00:10:14.61 Pastor Kenneth believes so. 00:10:14.64\00:10:16.81 The key is forming connections 00:10:16.85\00:10:18.55 where people are 00:10:18.58\00:10:19.91 and meeting their most painful needs. 00:10:19.95\00:10:22.82 The family structures is, 00:10:22.85\00:10:25.05 sort of, something also this under attack, 00:10:25.09\00:10:28.36 you know, in this region, 00:10:28.39\00:10:30.36 so a lot of unstable family relationships. 00:10:30.39\00:10:33.36 So we had a family retreat recently. 00:10:37.87\00:10:40.94 We wanted to place a focus upon families 00:10:40.97\00:10:43.97 spending time together. 00:10:44.01\00:10:45.57 So that was the overall goal, strengthening family bonds. 00:10:45.61\00:10:50.05 Over the six days of the retreat, 00:10:50.08\00:10:52.05 the eight families focused on spending 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.12 wholesome time together, 00:10:54.15\00:10:55.98 organized activities like crafts 00:10:56.02\00:10:58.12 and games provided opportunities for bonding, 00:10:58.15\00:11:01.02 and a lot of laughter and smiles. 00:11:01.06\00:11:03.53 It was very positive. It was very encouraging. 00:11:03.56\00:11:06.03 They were so grateful because these families 00:11:06.06\00:11:08.70 were also families 00:11:08.73\00:11:10.07 that couldn't afford vacation themselves. 00:11:10.10\00:11:13.94 So this was part of it. 00:11:13.97\00:11:15.30 Also, we were offering them a vacation experience. 00:11:15.34\00:11:17.61 And they were just so grateful for that experience. 00:11:17.64\00:11:20.88 And friendships building over that week, 00:11:20.91\00:11:24.11 we've spent together was... 00:11:24.15\00:11:25.61 So it was a very encouraging time. 00:11:25.65\00:11:27.78 It has been sort of quite touching, 00:11:27.82\00:11:30.59 also seeing how God 00:11:30.62\00:11:31.95 has been opening doors that we did not expect. 00:11:31.99\00:11:35.59 When they see we as a church really wanting the best 00:11:35.62\00:11:39.93 for the community, 00:11:39.96\00:11:41.96 so they've given access where we can, 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.63 sort of, be quite bold and open about faith, 00:11:45.67\00:11:49.67 and it's received quite well as well. 00:11:49.70\00:11:52.27 So I think this is not something we've been doing, 00:11:52.31\00:11:56.44 but it's seeing how God is working 00:11:56.48\00:11:59.85 on the lives of people and the hearts of people 00:11:59.88\00:12:01.58 and opening doors that seemed very closed. 00:12:01.62\00:12:06.42 Please pray for church members in Sortland, Norway. 00:12:06.45\00:12:09.42 Pray that God uses them to overcome 00:12:09.46\00:12:11.63 the challenges of loneliness, broken families, 00:12:11.66\00:12:14.60 and skepticism in the community and that through this, 00:12:14.63\00:12:17.93 people can come to know Jesus personally. 00:12:17.97\00:12:21.70 This quarter a portion of your 13th Sabbath Offering 00:12:21.74\00:12:24.94 will help build a centre of influence 00:12:24.97\00:12:26.88 for Pastor Kenneth and the church members 00:12:26.91\00:12:28.84 to host programs and events 00:12:28.88\00:12:30.55 geared toward the community. 00:12:30.58\00:12:32.25 The offering will also help 00:12:32.28\00:12:33.62 construct an urban center of influence in Cyprus 00:12:33.65\00:12:36.69 and establish a church in Serbia. 00:12:36.72\00:12:39.12 Please consider how you can support 00:12:39.15\00:12:41.02 these projects through prayer and by giving to this offering. 00:12:41.06\00:12:45.13 Well, thank you so much for joining us 00:13:00.78\00:13:02.31 on today's program. 00:13:02.34\00:13:03.95 I hope that you've been challenged 00:13:03.98\00:13:05.61 and inspired by what you've seen and heard. 00:13:05.65\00:13:09.08 As we've looked at the pioneer early days 00:13:09.12\00:13:12.25 of mission in Venezuela, 00:13:12.29\00:13:14.36 as we looked at mission here in Panama, 00:13:14.39\00:13:15.79 and we've looked at 00:13:15.82\00:13:17.16 what your 13th Sabbath Offerings 00:13:17.19\00:13:18.53 can do in Europe, 00:13:18.56\00:13:20.20 you can see that there's many opportunities, 00:13:20.23\00:13:22.16 wonderful things are happening, 00:13:22.20\00:13:23.77 but we still face many challenges. 00:13:23.80\00:13:26.23 And I want to thank you so much for your support 00:13:26.27\00:13:28.40 of Adventist mission to help make it possible. 00:13:28.44\00:13:31.57 Whether you pray for mission, whether you give for mission, 00:13:31.61\00:13:35.14 whether you're personally involved in mission, all three, 00:13:35.18\00:13:38.38 we consider you part of our Adventist mission family, 00:13:38.41\00:13:40.98 our Adventist mission team. 00:13:41.02\00:13:42.82 So please continue to pray, 00:13:42.85\00:13:44.42 please continue to give, please continue to go. 00:13:44.45\00:13:48.62 Well, for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.06 And I hope that you can join me next time 00:13:51.09\00:13:53.09 right here on Mission 360. 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.20
