Welcome back to Lyon. 00:00:26.86\00:00:28.19 And behind me you can see 00:00:28.22\00:00:29.89 the dramatic architecture of the Confluence Museum, 00:00:29.92\00:00:33.73 which has exhibits in science and anthropology 00:00:33.76\00:00:37.07 amid this is very, very modern architecture. 00:00:37.10\00:00:40.14 Next up, we travel to Silver Spring, 00:00:40.17\00:00:42.20 Maryland to learn more 00:00:42.24\00:00:43.57 about the worldwide publishing ministry. 00:00:43.61\00:00:46.74 I'm here with Almir Marroni, who is the publishing director 00:00:46.78\00:00:51.91 for the World's Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:51.95\00:00:54.68 Now people may not know 00:00:54.72\00:00:56.99 what a publishing director is or does, 00:00:57.02\00:00:59.02 so you don't work on the press all day, 00:00:59.05\00:01:00.72 what do you do? 00:01:00.76\00:01:02.09 Yeah, thank you for the question, Rick. 00:01:02.12\00:01:04.99 The publishing department here in the General Conference 00:01:05.03\00:01:08.80 works to coordinate literature distribution. 00:01:08.83\00:01:12.33 We advise publishing house regarding production, 00:01:12.37\00:01:15.94 what to produce, 00:01:15.97\00:01:17.31 what kind of books the church needs the most, 00:01:17.34\00:01:19.11 especially to reach out. 00:01:19.14\00:01:22.44 So this is our role to work 00:01:22.48\00:01:26.85 promoting literature distribution worldwide. 00:01:26.88\00:01:30.52 So you said reach out, so literature is mission? 00:01:30.55\00:01:34.42 Yes. 00:01:34.46\00:01:35.79 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:01:35.82\00:01:37.39 We are celebrating this year 170 years 00:01:37.43\00:01:40.50 since the church printed the first piece of literature. 00:01:40.53\00:01:44.23 It was July 1849. 00:01:44.27\00:01:47.34 So pioneers, they brought 1,000 copies, 00:01:47.37\00:01:51.94 they prayed for it, 00:01:51.97\00:01:53.51 and the church started distributing. 00:01:53.54\00:01:57.38 I remember reading, you know, sometimes mission history 00:01:57.41\00:02:00.92 and seeing that. 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.28 Sometimes in some countries 00:02:02.32\00:02:03.65 the very first intro arrived was not a missionary, 00:02:03.69\00:02:06.22 but it was literature. 00:02:06.25\00:02:07.62 Yes. 00:02:07.66\00:02:08.99 Now and I think there are a number of countries that way. 00:02:09.02\00:02:10.46 Yes. 00:02:10.49\00:02:11.83 So as you're, you know, working with literature evangelists, 00:02:11.86\00:02:15.70 I think, LEs we call them 00:02:15.73\00:02:17.87 and also publishing houses and things like that. 00:02:17.90\00:02:19.63 I remember meeting 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.80 with literature evangelists sometimes 00:02:21.84\00:02:23.27 and they had the best stories. 00:02:23.30\00:02:24.64 Yeah. 00:02:24.67\00:02:26.01 Do you have any stories that you can share with us 00:02:26.04\00:02:27.38 about what's happening? 00:02:27.41\00:02:28.74 Rick, we have around the world 00:02:28.78\00:02:31.38 45,000 LEs 00:02:31.41\00:02:34.75 and we estimate that this group, 00:02:34.78\00:02:37.12 they reach around 30 million people yearly 00:02:37.15\00:02:42.82 in personal contact, individual contact. 00:02:42.86\00:02:46.06 And we have many stories. 00:02:46.09\00:02:48.03 For example, I want to mention a story 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.33 without mentioning the country. 00:02:50.37\00:02:53.03 There is a country 00:02:53.07\00:02:54.70 in limited religious freedom place. 00:02:54.74\00:03:00.08 And our literature evangelists were selling a book 00:03:00.11\00:03:03.55 in different language 00:03:03.58\00:03:07.88 because people from the neighbor country 00:03:07.92\00:03:10.32 were leaving there. 00:03:10.35\00:03:12.72 And the literature evangelist was selling 00:03:12.75\00:03:14.49 and then the police came 00:03:14.52\00:03:16.19 and police arrested her and her colleague, 00:03:16.22\00:03:20.06 took them to the police department. 00:03:20.10\00:03:23.06 And the police officer start blaming them 00:03:23.10\00:03:28.00 to disturbing people 00:03:28.04\00:03:29.44 and she said, "No, we are not disturbing. 00:03:29.47\00:03:31.37 We are promoting health, 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.48 we are promoting freedom from drugs." 00:03:33.51\00:03:37.98 So you should go chasing these people 00:03:38.01\00:03:40.72 who were distributing drugs, 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.38 we are promoting just the opposite. 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.75 We are promoting health. 00:03:44.79\00:03:46.29 So shame on you. 00:03:46.32\00:03:48.12 She said, "Shame on you. 00:03:48.16\00:03:49.59 You shouldn't be chasing us." 00:03:49.62\00:03:52.19 And as she said that the earth shake 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.96 because this is a territory of earthquakes. 00:03:56.00\00:04:00.44 That men became so mad and said, 00:04:00.47\00:04:02.84 "Okay, you go home, you go home." 00:04:02.87\00:04:04.87 And she called the publishing director, 00:04:04.91\00:04:07.01 he came. 00:04:07.04\00:04:08.54 And when he took her to her home, she asked, 00:04:08.58\00:04:12.58 "No, no, pastor, 00:04:12.61\00:04:13.95 please don't take me to the home. 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.22 Take me to the same street where I was working. 00:04:16.25\00:04:20.96 I want to continue from that door on." 00:04:20.99\00:04:24.79 This is the spirit of our literature evangelists. 00:04:24.83\00:04:27.56 Some of them they work in places 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.56 where we don't have freedom to work, 00:04:29.60\00:04:32.83 but they have this sense of mission. 00:04:32.87\00:04:34.90 They want to share the gospel and they move forward. 00:04:34.94\00:04:39.24 And when we talk about mission, 00:04:39.27\00:04:40.88 we're talking about mission holistically. 00:04:40.91\00:04:43.04 We care for the whole person, physically, spiritually, 00:04:43.08\00:04:45.78 and everything else. 00:04:45.81\00:04:47.15 So somewhere along those lines that's our mission. 00:04:47.18\00:04:50.79 Now when it comes to literature evangelists, 00:04:50.82\00:04:54.06 you mentioned something about 00:04:54.09\00:04:56.26 there are student literature evangelists as well. 00:04:56.29\00:04:58.39 So does that mean they're learning 00:04:58.43\00:04:59.76 to be literature evangelists or? 00:04:59.79\00:05:01.16 Yeah, we have three areas of distribution. 00:05:01.20\00:05:04.87 First area is the original area. 00:05:04.90\00:05:08.30 I mean, all Adventists are literature distributors, 00:05:08.34\00:05:13.74 all of them. 00:05:13.78\00:05:15.64 It was the way the church started 00:05:15.68\00:05:17.71 before we had the first literature evangelist, 00:05:17.75\00:05:20.68 which came only 32 years later. 00:05:20.72\00:05:23.85 So the church began distributing literature 00:05:23.89\00:05:27.52 every church member. 00:05:27.56\00:05:29.26 So literature evangelists, they are missionaries 00:05:29.29\00:05:31.63 who accept a call to dedicate full-time or part-time 00:05:31.66\00:05:36.40 to literature distribution. 00:05:36.43\00:05:38.17 In this group, we have a student program, 00:05:38.20\00:05:42.87 which is recruiting students from our universities 00:05:42.90\00:05:45.87 or even young people from our churches 00:05:45.91\00:05:48.61 to engage literature distribution 00:05:48.64\00:05:50.81 for a short period of time, like summer vacation. 00:05:50.85\00:05:54.38 So the students, 00:05:54.42\00:05:55.75 they do these work on summers or short vacation time. 00:05:55.78\00:06:00.02 And we have a group of 20,000 of them. 00:06:00.06\00:06:04.06 And that's actually hard work. 00:06:04.09\00:06:06.06 And you would think, you know, that, 00:06:06.09\00:06:07.93 you know, students would say, do I really want to do this? 00:06:07.96\00:06:11.30 But I have a feeling 00:06:11.33\00:06:12.93 that it is a wonderful life experience 00:06:12.97\00:06:15.04 that prepares them for a lot of things 00:06:15.07\00:06:16.67 in the future. 00:06:16.71\00:06:18.04 Ellen White says that this is a best practical school 00:06:18.07\00:06:21.31 you should engage in. 00:06:21.34\00:06:22.68 And she said for those 00:06:22.71\00:06:24.05 who are preparing to be ministers, 00:06:24.08\00:06:25.41 there is no best training than canvassing 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.65 and she says that. 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.35 We have a nice group of young people doing this. 00:06:30.39\00:06:34.79 For example, in Japan, 00:06:34.82\00:06:36.52 they have the Youth Rush project in Japan 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.23 and they are doing extraordinary things, 00:06:39.26\00:06:41.60 where things are difficult. 00:06:41.63\00:06:44.67 And these Japanese young people, 00:06:44.70\00:06:47.67 they are visiting people like nobody else does. 00:06:47.70\00:06:51.41 And they are doing great job in Japan. 00:06:51.44\00:06:53.98 Which is interesting because in Japan, 00:06:54.01\00:06:55.91 you generally do not invite people to your home, 00:06:55.94\00:06:59.08 culturally, but people are opening their doors 00:06:59.11\00:07:00.98 and things are happening. 00:07:01.02\00:07:02.35 I had the privilege to accompany for two days 00:07:02.38\00:07:05.35 this program in Japan, going out with them. 00:07:05.39\00:07:08.62 And it was amazing. 00:07:08.66\00:07:09.99 People even don't open their doors. 00:07:10.03\00:07:13.06 They put their nose outside 00:07:13.09\00:07:14.90 and they look in through this small space. 00:07:14.93\00:07:19.53 A young literature evangelist present books 00:07:19.57\00:07:22.50 and say a prayer and do the work is amazing. 00:07:22.54\00:07:25.71 I see you bought some books. 00:07:25.74\00:07:27.28 Can you tell us a bit about these books? 00:07:27.31\00:07:29.44 Yes, we have here three copies 00:07:29.48\00:07:32.68 of missionary books of the year, 00:07:32.71\00:07:35.62 2018, The Power of Hope, 00:07:35.65\00:07:39.69 2019, Hope for Today's Family, 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.56 and 2020, Hope Beyond Tomorrow. 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.69 So these books are meant to inspire our church members 00:07:45.73\00:07:49.73 to distribute worldwide. 00:07:49.76\00:07:52.03 We estimate that we produce 00:07:52.07\00:07:53.87 around 50 million books per year, 00:07:53.90\00:07:56.37 missionary books in more than four 40 languages. 00:07:56.40\00:08:01.98 So our church members... Yeah. 00:08:02.01\00:08:04.08 I think I've heard them called sharing books and like that. 00:08:04.11\00:08:05.91 Yes, yes, sharing books. 00:08:05.95\00:08:07.38 Because take a book and share it with somebody 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.18 that you know, it can be your neighbor or can be whoever. 00:08:09.22\00:08:10.92 It's very small price and then they can distribute. 00:08:10.95\00:08:15.92 Wonderful. Yeah. 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.29 Thank you for being with us today. 00:08:17.33\00:08:19.46 For Mission 360, I'm Rick Kajiura. 00:08:19.49\00:08:23.00 Next up, we learn more 00:08:23.03\00:08:24.37 about how mission offerings are to mission 00:08:24.40\00:08:27.27 as water is to a land of drought. 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.84 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:08:38.45\00:08:40.12 is known around the world for its mission outreach. 00:08:40.15\00:08:42.98 And your mission offerings 00:08:43.02\00:08:44.52 are the workhorse of these efforts. 00:08:44.55\00:08:46.65 These offerings do the heavy lifting 00:08:46.69\00:08:48.89 and foundation laying the repair and renovation 00:08:48.92\00:08:51.66 of the basic structure of the church's work 00:08:51.69\00:08:54.23 around the world. 00:08:54.26\00:08:55.60 Without the mission offerings, all the other structures 00:08:55.63\00:08:58.37 and systems built upon it could crumble. 00:08:58.40\00:09:01.20 Your mission offerings are like a life giving river 00:09:01.24\00:09:03.77 with tributaries flowing around the world, 00:09:03.81\00:09:06.31 carrying refreshing water to mission fields. 00:09:06.34\00:09:09.48 Sometimes we want to give to a specific project 00:09:09.51\00:09:12.31 or to put our offerings towards something special 00:09:12.35\00:09:14.52 that stirs our hearts. 00:09:14.55\00:09:16.52 We see the results, we feel satisfied. 00:09:16.55\00:09:19.65 Giving to the mission offering may not be as glamorous 00:09:19.69\00:09:22.82 as giving to a specific well-advertised 00:09:22.86\00:09:25.63 project or program. 00:09:25.66\00:09:27.60 But wait, if it weren't for mission offering 00:09:27.63\00:09:30.03 to sustain them, 00:09:30.07\00:09:31.40 these projects would never happen. 00:09:31.43\00:09:33.70 So what happens to our tithes and offerings? 00:09:33.74\00:09:36.30 Well, when we return 10% of our income as tithe to God, 00:09:36.34\00:09:40.31 the Adventist Church uses it 00:09:40.34\00:09:41.74 to support pastors and evangelists 00:09:41.78\00:09:44.08 as well as some teachers and other workers 00:09:44.11\00:09:45.88 involved in spreading the gospel. 00:09:45.91\00:09:48.55 On the front lines of mission, 00:09:48.58\00:09:50.19 tithe is not used to fund orphanages, 00:09:50.22\00:09:53.25 schools or health programs 00:09:53.29\00:09:55.72 and it doesn't cover miscellaneous operational 00:09:55.76\00:09:57.63 expenses either. 00:09:57.66\00:09:59.03 The mission offering does this. 00:09:59.06\00:10:01.76 You see our mission offerings fund 00:10:01.80\00:10:03.77 what can't be funded through tithe. 00:10:03.80\00:10:06.10 So when mission giving falls, 00:10:06.13\00:10:07.97 then work gets cut back worldwide, 00:10:08.00\00:10:11.34 mission projects falter, the movement stutters. 00:10:11.37\00:10:15.81 None of us want this to happen. 00:10:15.84\00:10:17.91 So our mission offerings 00:10:17.95\00:10:19.28 help ensure that mission work operates continuously 00:10:19.31\00:10:22.32 around the world. 00:10:22.35\00:10:23.79 Want to see how our giving impacts people 00:10:23.82\00:10:25.72 around the globe? 00:10:25.75\00:10:27.09 Mission 360 TV programs, Mission Spotlight, 00:10:27.12\00:10:30.63 and the Mission Quarterlies offer regular updates 00:10:30.66\00:10:32.99 on mission around the world. 00:10:33.03\00:10:34.76 These stories take you to dozens of countries 00:10:34.80\00:10:37.23 to see what Adventists are doing in places 00:10:37.27\00:10:39.60 you may have never even heard of. 00:10:39.63\00:10:42.17 And what about the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:10:42.20\00:10:44.07 which began in 1912? 00:10:44.11\00:10:45.97 For many years, this offering was an overflow offering. 00:10:46.01\00:10:48.88 A budget was set to fund the mission program. 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.58 And once that money was raised, any extra, 00:10:51.61\00:10:54.08 the overflow was used to support a special project 00:10:54.12\00:10:57.35 chosen for that quarter. 00:10:57.39\00:10:58.79 However, during recession in the 1970s, 00:10:58.82\00:11:01.56 there was no overflow offering. 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.29 So church leaders voted to always send 00:11:04.33\00:11:06.73 25% of the offering collected on the 13th Sabbath 00:11:06.76\00:11:10.00 to support specific projects for each division 00:11:10.03\00:11:12.80 on a rotational basis. 00:11:12.83\00:11:14.90 Through your 13th Sabbath Offerings, 00:11:14.94\00:11:17.21 you have helped build schools, dormitories, hospitals, 00:11:17.24\00:11:21.34 clinics and church buildings, 00:11:21.38\00:11:23.24 launched mission boats and set up lamb shelters, 00:11:23.28\00:11:26.61 printing presses, universities and more, 00:11:26.65\00:11:29.52 altogether more than 1,000 projects. 00:11:29.55\00:11:32.85 And because tithe money can't be used for buildings, 00:11:32.89\00:11:35.56 the 13th Sabbath Offering has frequently been used 00:11:35.59\00:11:37.89 for construction projects. 00:11:37.93\00:11:39.66 All of this could have never happened 00:11:39.69\00:11:41.43 without the Holy Spirit's leading 00:11:41.46\00:11:43.30 and your regular faithful support 00:11:43.33\00:11:45.37 of the mission offerings. 00:11:45.40\00:11:47.37 We encourage you to join Adventist everywhere 00:11:47.40\00:11:50.41 to prayerfully consider 00:11:50.44\00:11:51.77 what you can do to keep a faithful river 00:11:51.81\00:11:54.44 of mission offerings bringing life 00:11:54.48\00:11:56.64 giving water to mission fields around the world. 00:11:56.68\00:11:59.41 Well, that's about it for today's program. 00:12:10.83\00:12:12.66 And I hope that you've been inspired 00:12:12.69\00:12:14.60 and challenged by our 360 degree view of mission 00:12:14.63\00:12:18.30 around the world. 00:12:18.33\00:12:19.67 And I want to thank you for being part 00:12:19.70\00:12:21.04 of the Adventist Mission team. 00:12:21.07\00:12:22.97 Because if it wasn't for you, 00:12:23.00\00:12:24.34 if it wasn't for your donations to global mission, 00:12:24.37\00:12:27.01 your mission offerings, 00:12:27.04\00:12:28.54 your prayers and your personal involvement, 00:12:28.58\00:12:31.48 none of what you see on this program 00:12:31.51\00:12:33.08 would be happening. 00:12:33.11\00:12:34.45 And it's exciting to see new groups of believers 00:12:34.48\00:12:37.09 being planted, 00:12:37.12\00:12:38.45 new centers of influence established, 00:12:38.49\00:12:40.59 new people coming to know Jesus 00:12:40.62\00:12:42.22 for the first time in their lives. 00:12:42.26\00:12:44.06 Well for Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause. 00:12:44.09\00:12:46.63 And I hope that you can join me next time 00:12:46.66\00:12:48.63 right here on Mission 360. 00:12:48.66\00:12:50.87
