An Argentinean couple serve as missionaries in Cyprus, 00:00:08.14\00:00:11.87 a center of influence serves the sick in Hungary, 00:00:11.91\00:00:15.11 and a Global Mission pioneer plants churches in Nigeria, 00:00:15.14\00:00:18.85 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:18.88\00:00:21.28 Hello and welcome to Mission 360°. 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.59 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:57.62\00:00:59.12 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:59.15\00:01:00.72 from Dublin in Ireland. 00:01:00.76\00:01:02.99 This is a city of more than one million people. 00:01:03.02\00:01:05.83 And it's a very historic city obviously, 00:01:05.86\00:01:08.86 but it's also a young city because it's estimated that 00:01:08.90\00:01:12.27 some 50% of the people living in this city 00:01:12.30\00:01:15.47 are actually under age 25. 00:01:15.50\00:01:18.64 There's a very strong drinking culture, 00:01:18.67\00:01:20.74 a lot of pubs, I read somewhere that 00:01:20.78\00:01:22.41 there was more than 1,000 pubs in this city. 00:01:22.44\00:01:24.88 I also read somewhere that there were 666, 00:01:24.91\00:01:27.65 which may be more appropriate but we'll be looking at 00:01:27.68\00:01:30.39 the challenge of mission here in Ireland, 00:01:30.42\00:01:32.79 and around the world, but first up, 00:01:32.82\00:01:35.02 let's travel to Hungary to visit 00:01:35.06\00:01:37.09 a mobile urban center of influence. 00:01:37.13\00:01:41.10 When doctors told Resta he had type 2 diabetes, 00:01:41.13\00:01:44.23 he didn't know exactly what to do. 00:01:44.27\00:01:46.43 He was immediately put on three medications 00:01:46.47\00:01:48.64 and none of them seem to help. 00:01:48.67\00:01:50.74 Eventually, Resta visited 00:01:50.77\00:01:52.57 a nearby Adventist healthcare clinic. 00:01:52.61\00:01:55.18 At the clinic, they taught me how to change my lifestyle. 00:01:55.21\00:01:58.41 And since then I don't take any medication. 00:01:58.45\00:02:00.78 I eat a vegan diet and I work out a lot. 00:02:00.82\00:02:04.22 Resta's health transformation inspired him to attend 00:02:04.25\00:02:07.09 the Adventist University in Hungary 00:02:07.12\00:02:09.06 to get certified in Lifestyle Consultation. 00:02:09.09\00:02:11.99 Because I have diabetes, I really want to help 00:02:12.03\00:02:14.80 other people with this disease. 00:02:14.83\00:02:16.60 That's my motivation. 00:02:16.63\00:02:18.50 Today, Resta is the coordinator of a Global Mission 00:02:18.53\00:02:21.24 Urban Center of Influence in Debrecen, 00:02:21.27\00:02:23.71 the second largest city in Hungary. 00:02:23.74\00:02:25.97 This center provides a number of services, 00:02:26.01\00:02:28.68 including a salt room, therapeutic massage, 00:02:28.71\00:02:31.71 medical advice for asthma and lung problems, 00:02:31.75\00:02:34.28 and grief and addiction counseling. 00:02:34.32\00:02:36.55 From the first moment they come here, 00:02:36.58\00:02:38.55 we tell them everything is based on Christianity. 00:02:38.59\00:02:41.96 Our base is the Bible. 00:02:41.99\00:02:44.49 The Christian care and professional services 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.56 visitors receive encourage them to return for other programs. 00:02:46.59\00:02:51.00 We are very lucky because God gave us six doctors 00:02:51.03\00:02:54.34 who are church members, and also more than 10 members 00:02:54.37\00:02:58.01 who are working in the healthcare field. 00:02:58.04\00:03:02.38 I think it's a good opportunity for us to help people 00:03:02.41\00:03:05.71 and work together for people. 00:03:05.75\00:03:10.15 I think it's a very important place. 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.65 Because in church, 00:03:12.69\00:03:14.02 we can treat the spiritual health of people, 00:03:14.06\00:03:16.96 and here, we can treat the body 00:03:16.99\00:03:19.16 and give them advice about the body. 00:03:19.19\00:03:22.23 I think this place is like a bridge 00:03:22.26\00:03:24.53 between the people of the city and the church. 00:03:24.57\00:03:28.17 This Urban Center of Influence started through 00:03:28.20\00:03:30.34 total member involvement, 00:03:30.37\00:03:31.97 when Anna-Maria decided to open a small bookstore 00:03:32.01\00:03:34.61 where people could relax, socialize, 00:03:34.64\00:03:36.81 and browse faith based books. 00:03:36.85\00:03:40.62 People don't have proper connections 00:03:40.65\00:03:42.35 with each other, 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.12 they're just rushing all the time. 00:03:44.15\00:03:47.32 We were trying to reach out to those people 00:03:47.36\00:03:49.32 who didn't have proper 00:03:49.36\00:03:50.69 and pure connections with others. 00:03:50.73\00:03:53.60 We wanted to pray with them and for them. 00:03:53.63\00:03:57.83 Through this ministry, 00:03:57.87\00:03:59.47 several people have come to know Jesus. 00:03:59.50\00:04:03.54 There's a woman who had several problems 00:04:03.57\00:04:05.87 and came into the store. 00:04:05.91\00:04:08.41 I was able to recommend some books and support. 00:04:08.44\00:04:14.35 We talked, and I invited her to church. 00:04:14.38\00:04:18.39 And she became a church member. 00:04:18.42\00:04:20.32 It was like a miracle 00:04:24.63\00:04:25.96 how much of a loving atmosphere there was. 00:04:25.99\00:04:28.66 They were very kind to me. 00:04:28.70\00:04:30.60 They offered for me to sit down and talk with them. 00:04:30.63\00:04:33.74 I'm very thankful for the center, 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.94 and I'm thankful I can share my new beliefs 00:04:35.97\00:04:38.04 and love with others. 00:04:38.07\00:04:39.84 Another way Adventist spread love 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.81 is through their annual event called Reach out with Flowers. 00:04:41.84\00:04:45.31 Each year, one of the church members 00:04:45.35\00:04:46.98 grows thousands of daffodils on his land 00:04:47.02\00:04:49.35 and donates them for all the church members 00:04:49.38\00:04:51.45 to give out freely in the community. 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.06 Many people ask "Why we do this?" 00:04:54.09\00:04:56.93 The answer is simple. 00:04:56.96\00:04:59.59 Just because we want to show love 00:04:59.63\00:05:02.10 and be a blessing to people in the city. 00:05:02.13\00:05:06.84 Adventists in Debrecen are trying to connect with people 00:05:06.87\00:05:09.60 in creative ways. 00:05:09.64\00:05:11.01 Whether it's through medical services 00:05:11.04\00:05:12.81 or partnering in city events, 00:05:12.84\00:05:14.54 they want to be involved in the community. 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.71 Please pray that their outreach efforts 00:05:17.75\00:05:19.41 continue to spread the love of Jesus to the people 00:05:19.45\00:05:22.18 of this large city. 00:05:22.22\00:05:23.89 Thank you for supporting Global Mission, 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.15 which supports projects like these 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.09 in cities around the world. 00:05:28.12\00:05:29.46 My guest is Hannah, who is a One Year 00:05:43.41\00:05:46.04 In Mission Volunteer here in Dublin. 00:05:46.07\00:05:48.78 Hannah, thanks so much for joining us. 00:05:48.81\00:05:50.85 Now you are from Australia, 00:05:50.88\00:05:52.25 so I can understand you when you speak. 00:05:52.28\00:05:54.08 And I appreciate that. 00:05:54.12\00:05:55.85 What made you decide to become 00:05:55.88\00:05:57.29 a One Year In Mission Volunteer? 00:05:57.32\00:05:59.65 So I heard about the One Year Mission program, 00:05:59.69\00:06:03.26 I was at a Global Youth Leader Congress last year in Germany, 00:06:03.29\00:06:06.43 and they were promoting it so I thought, 00:06:06.46\00:06:07.93 "Oh, that sounds really interesting." 00:06:07.96\00:06:09.30 And I wanted to do some kind of mission work 00:06:09.33\00:06:11.03 so yeah, I ended up talking to a few people 00:06:11.07\00:06:13.23 and they pointed me towards it. 00:06:13.27\00:06:15.10 And yeah, I ended up here in Ireland. 00:06:15.14\00:06:17.51 Wonderful. Now what were you doing? 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.61 So previously, I was working for three years as a chaplain 00:06:19.64\00:06:24.11 and associate pastor at a school. 00:06:24.15\00:06:26.98 We had a campus church as well so yeah, 00:06:27.02\00:06:29.22 I spent three years at the school doing ministry, 00:06:29.25\00:06:32.39 but I thought I wanted to, yeah, 00:06:32.42\00:06:34.66 just have a go at doing mission work 00:06:34.69\00:06:36.52 and working with the community 00:06:36.56\00:06:37.99 and I found out about the Cuisle Centre. 00:06:38.03\00:06:40.30 Wonderful, now what is it 00:06:40.33\00:06:41.86 that attracted you to a center of influence? 00:06:41.90\00:06:44.73 I think it's just, I guess, yeah, reaching the community, 00:06:44.77\00:06:48.77 that's something that I've always wanted to do. 00:06:48.80\00:06:51.34 I heard someone say once, 00:06:51.37\00:06:53.94 "If the church was to cease existing, 00:06:53.98\00:06:56.54 would the community realize that 00:06:56.58\00:06:59.11 that's a reality?" 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.72 And so I thought, yeah, 00:07:00.75\00:07:02.08 I want to do more work with the community. 00:07:02.12\00:07:03.49 And when I look at how Jesus ministered, 00:07:03.52\00:07:05.72 He always touched lives, in whole villages and cities 00:07:05.75\00:07:08.69 and I thought, you know, that's what ministry is, 00:07:08.72\00:07:10.46 and I wanted to do that kind of ministry. 00:07:10.49\00:07:13.06 Terrific, now you're working as a chaplain at a school 00:07:13.09\00:07:17.07 there in Melbourne. 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.73 How... 00:07:18.77\00:07:20.10 In what ways is it different working here in Dublin? 00:07:20.14\00:07:23.04 I think well, 00:07:23.07\00:07:25.07 because with the center of influence, 00:07:25.11\00:07:26.84 it is really outward focus. 00:07:26.88\00:07:28.34 So you're working with people from the community 00:07:28.38\00:07:30.75 and just people in the neighborhood. 00:07:30.78\00:07:33.31 So, I mean, with a school we do similar 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.58 because all the kids come from the same area. 00:07:35.62\00:07:38.79 But I think here it's yeah, 00:07:38.82\00:07:40.52 more broad, I think the scope for... 00:07:40.56\00:07:42.32 with the center of influence. 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.23 Now tell me about the concept of a center of influence. 00:07:44.26\00:07:46.93 How do you see that? 00:07:46.96\00:07:48.56 How do you see it functioning? 00:07:48.60\00:07:50.33 I guess, well, what we've been doing 00:07:50.37\00:07:52.80 so far is just running different types of activities, 00:07:52.83\00:07:56.60 and just finding ways to connect with people. 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.07 We have the knitting class, we have cooking classes. 00:07:59.11\00:08:03.38 So all these different ways to just find ways 00:08:03.41\00:08:05.18 to connect with people, 00:08:05.21\00:08:06.55 I think, yeah, we're just trying to do that 00:08:06.58\00:08:08.35 to reach people in that way. 00:08:08.38\00:08:10.15 Yeah. 00:08:10.19\00:08:11.72 Because from the office of Adventist Mission, 00:08:11.75\00:08:15.02 we see this as one of the key ways 00:08:15.06\00:08:17.73 of being able to start 00:08:17.76\00:08:19.09 new groups of believers in cities 00:08:19.13\00:08:20.60 because that's putting Christ's method 00:08:20.63\00:08:21.96 of ministry into practice. 00:08:22.00\00:08:23.33 Yeah, definitely. 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.70 You actually got a hands on experience here. 00:08:24.73\00:08:26.10 Yes. 00:08:26.13\00:08:27.47 Now, there must be some challenges you face, 00:08:27.50\00:08:30.14 what are some of the challenges you face? 00:08:30.17\00:08:31.64 Challenges? 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.78 I guess, you know, it's always hard to reach, 00:08:33.81\00:08:36.54 I guess the younger generation 00:08:36.58\00:08:37.95 'cause they're more skeptical of religion 00:08:37.98\00:08:41.22 and they are very busy as well so it's always harder 00:08:41.25\00:08:44.15 to get that age group to come and get involved, 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.76 but also being a volunteer, 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.63 being away from families is a bit difficult as well. 00:08:50.66\00:08:54.20 But I thought, you know, it's a, you know, 00:08:54.23\00:08:55.86 a small sacrifice to pay to get more experience 00:08:55.90\00:08:58.33 and to get more understanding of how this ministry runs. 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.84 Yeah. 00:09:00.87\00:09:02.47 So was it a hard decision to give up a paying job 00:09:02.50\00:09:06.57 to 12 months to come to a non-paying job? 00:09:06.61\00:09:09.84 Yeah, it was, I kind of battled with it for a while. 00:09:09.88\00:09:14.32 And I thought, you know, it is a big risk to take. 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.82 But I thought the outcome of what I can get 00:09:17.85\00:09:22.12 from being involved in this ministry 00:09:22.16\00:09:23.73 would outweigh 00:09:23.76\00:09:25.76 just letting go of a stable job. 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.26 So yeah, I'm not sure 00:09:27.30\00:09:29.23 what God's plan is for the future 00:09:29.26\00:09:30.60 but I think this is going to help with, 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.87 I think where He's trying to lead me as well. 00:09:32.90\00:09:35.47 So you went to Avondale College and you studied theology there, 00:09:35.50\00:09:38.77 but now you are getting the education 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.54 of hands on experience 00:09:41.58\00:09:42.98 where you're getting cross cultural as well, 00:09:43.01\00:09:44.41 because you're coming to a different country. 00:09:44.45\00:09:45.85 Yeah, definitely. Yeah. 00:09:45.88\00:09:48.02 What are the rewards that you have found so far? 00:09:48.05\00:09:51.35 What has been the most exciting thing 00:09:51.39\00:09:53.32 of what you're doing? 00:09:53.36\00:09:54.69 I think just seeing the way that the programs we run 00:09:54.72\00:09:57.46 and the activities we have, how they're touching lives. 00:09:57.49\00:10:00.36 There was one lady who came, she moved from the country 00:10:00.40\00:10:03.87 and she said that her husband died, 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.73 she wanted to be somewhere closer to hospitals 00:10:05.77\00:10:08.07 and other services. 00:10:08.10\00:10:10.81 And she found out about our center 00:10:10.84\00:10:12.47 because she lives nearby. 00:10:12.51\00:10:14.48 And yeah, she started coming 00:10:14.51\00:10:15.88 and she started getting involved and yeah, 00:10:15.91\00:10:17.98 really enjoys the friendship that she's built here. 00:10:18.01\00:10:20.42 So that's been inspiring for me to see that, you know, 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.25 it really is working. 00:10:23.28\00:10:24.62 Yes. Yeah, Terrific. 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.45 Now if somebody is watching this program and thinking, 00:10:26.49\00:10:29.42 half thinking, "Maybe I could be a volunteer," 00:10:29.46\00:10:31.29 what would you say to them? 00:10:31.33\00:10:33.03 I say, "Go for it." It is a big step to take. 00:10:33.06\00:10:38.37 But at the same time, 00:10:38.40\00:10:39.73 I think the reward is much greater. 00:10:39.77\00:10:42.34 And they can really get a feel 00:10:42.37\00:10:44.67 for what this kind of ministry is. 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.44 And, you know, if they have a chance 00:10:46.47\00:10:48.34 to oversee they can bring it back to their country 00:10:48.38\00:10:50.91 and apply what they've learnt to where they are. 00:10:50.95\00:10:54.78 Terrific. 00:10:54.82\00:10:56.15 Hannah, thanks so much for sharing with us today. 00:10:56.18\00:10:58.39 I appreciate it.
