A missionary couple endures a turbulent time in Cambodia. 00:00:08.47\00:00:12.54 An engineer helps build churches in Peru, 00:00:12.57\00:00:15.91 and the sights and sounds of Panama, 00:00:15.94\00:00:17.78 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:17.81\00:00:20.08 Hello, and welcome to Mission 360°. 00:00:53.28\00:00:55.32 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.35\00:00:56.85 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:56.89\00:00:58.35 from Panama City in Panama. 00:00:58.39\00:01:01.02 Panama, of course, is famous for the Panama Canal. 00:01:01.06\00:01:03.76 And I'm actually standing at the southern entrance 00:01:03.79\00:01:06.59 to this canal, the Pacific Ocean side, 00:01:06.63\00:01:09.43 and it stretches some 80 kilometers 00:01:09.46\00:01:12.60 across to the Atlantic Ocean. 00:01:12.63\00:01:14.87 This revolutionized transportation 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.87 because before this canal was built 00:01:17.91\00:01:19.97 ships had the arduous journey 00:01:20.01\00:01:22.34 of having to travel down the Pacific Coast, 00:01:22.38\00:01:24.95 all the way to Cape Horn, around Cape Horn, 00:01:24.98\00:01:27.88 up north to the United States, Northeast to Europe. 00:01:27.92\00:01:31.19 And travel time was cut tremendously, 00:01:31.22\00:01:34.72 transportation costs cut, incredibly, 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.59 and of course it came with sacrifice 00:01:37.63\00:01:39.36 the French started building the canal 00:01:39.39\00:01:41.90 back in the 1800s, 00:01:41.93\00:01:43.40 but they had to stop 00:01:43.43\00:01:44.87 because of engineering difficulties 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.37 and because so many men were dying on the job. 00:01:46.40\00:01:49.20 The United States completed the canal in 1914. 00:01:49.24\00:01:52.87 We'll be learning more about Panama 00:01:52.91\00:01:54.61 and mission in Panama on this program, 00:01:54.64\00:01:57.15 but first up let's travel to Cambodia 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.91 to learn the story of a missionary couple 00:01:59.95\00:02:02.28 who faced many challenges. 00:02:02.32\00:02:03.72 During the 1970s 00:02:18.70\00:02:20.24 it was a turbulent time in Southeast Asia. 00:02:20.27\00:02:22.77 With ongoing war in Vietnam and Cambodia. 00:02:22.80\00:02:26.31 Two young missionaries fresh out of college, 00:02:26.34\00:02:29.08 arrived in Cambodia to establish new mission work. 00:02:29.11\00:02:32.78 We got married. 00:02:32.81\00:02:34.58 And right after the honeymoon, 00:02:34.62\00:02:36.35 we came to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 00:02:36.38\00:02:38.85 which was our mission field for five years 00:02:38.89\00:02:42.06 or so we thought. 00:02:42.09\00:02:44.16 And we set foot on this building, 00:02:44.19\00:02:47.80 which was supposed to be our honeymoon suite. 00:02:47.83\00:02:52.67 The first floor was the classrooms. 00:02:52.70\00:02:56.30 Second floor will be more classrooms, 00:02:56.34\00:03:00.18 plus the church. 00:03:00.21\00:03:01.64 Then the third floor will be the apartments 00:03:01.68\00:03:04.55 for the five student missionaries 00:03:04.58\00:03:06.82 that came from America to work here to teach English. 00:03:06.85\00:03:11.52 So the sign in front will say, 00:03:11.55\00:03:13.69 SDA English Language Institute. 00:03:13.72\00:03:18.26 On the fourth storey, 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.70 you will see the balcony that just above the flag, 00:03:20.73\00:03:24.13 and that's the place we spend a lot of time praying 00:03:24.17\00:03:27.87 because in those years, we had frequent blackouts. 00:03:27.90\00:03:33.81 We could see during the day, 00:03:33.84\00:03:36.18 F-111 Fighter Bombers coming from an angle, 00:03:36.21\00:03:40.78 swooping down, and then going up again. 00:03:40.82\00:03:43.52 And before going up, 00:03:43.55\00:03:45.32 you could see rockets being fired from the plane, 00:03:45.35\00:03:48.16 up and down, up and down. 00:03:48.19\00:03:50.19 They came in waves. 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.03 So there was the military campaigns, 00:03:52.06\00:03:54.60 and then on top, on the fourth floor, 00:03:54.63\00:03:58.27 many a times we claim Psalm 91. 00:03:58.30\00:04:01.90 "You shall not be afraid of the danger by night, 00:04:01.94\00:04:06.64 nor the arrow that flies by day." 00:04:06.68\00:04:09.64 We said, "Lord, You have promised, 00:04:09.68\00:04:12.95 we shall not be afraid of the B-52 Bombers by day 00:04:12.98\00:04:18.55 and the rockets that flew by night." 00:04:18.59\00:04:22.72 You know, the rockets were very dangerous. 00:04:22.76\00:04:27.56 And so I told my wife, there's nothing to worry about. 00:04:27.60\00:04:30.40 When you hear the sound, you are okay. 00:04:30.43\00:04:33.94 And when you don't hear the sound, 00:04:33.97\00:04:35.84 either you're alive or you're dead. 00:04:35.87\00:04:38.14 Just one of those two options. 00:04:38.17\00:04:39.51 So we're dependent on the Lord a lot 00:04:39.54\00:04:41.78 on that fourth floor balcony. 00:04:41.81\00:04:44.81 And one night, 00:04:44.85\00:04:46.75 we heard a lot of rocket fires in the cities. 00:04:46.78\00:04:51.55 So we went to the fifth floor, and we looked down. 00:04:51.59\00:04:54.99 Almost the entire outskirt of Phnom Penh was on fire. 00:04:55.02\00:05:00.63 So we said this is it. 00:05:00.66\00:05:02.23 This is it. 00:05:02.26\00:05:03.83 Whichever direction you look everywhere, 00:05:03.87\00:05:07.90 the fire. 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.51 GT, Ivy, and the student missionaries 00:05:10.54\00:05:13.01 were evacuated to Vietnam. 00:05:13.04\00:05:15.08 But their story didn't end there. 00:05:15.11\00:05:16.98 They prepare to return to Cambodia 00:05:17.01\00:05:18.91 and face new challenges. 00:05:18.95\00:05:20.42 I'm in Panama City in the country of Panama. 00:05:27.39\00:05:30.56 And my guest is the President 00:05:30.59\00:05:32.16 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Panama, 00:05:32.19\00:05:34.70 Pastor Jose de Gracia, 00:05:34.73\00:05:36.67 thank you so much for joining us today. 00:05:36.70\00:05:39.13 Can you please describe for me the territory of Panama 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.30 where the church is operating? 00:05:42.34\00:05:44.01 Panama extents 75,000 square kilometers 00:05:47.88\00:05:52.98 with more than 4 million people living in the country. 00:05:53.01\00:05:58.35 Panama is mostly a cosmopolitan country, 00:05:58.39\00:06:02.26 all nationalities live in Panama. 00:06:02.29\00:06:05.59 It's a melting pot. 00:06:05.63\00:06:07.40 Many people are attracted here because of the Panama Canal. 00:06:07.43\00:06:13.27 When you look around you see many kinds of people. 00:06:13.30\00:06:18.74 And that's a good thing. 00:06:18.77\00:06:21.01 We love each ethnicity, 00:06:21.04\00:06:23.31 and we can live together in peace. 00:06:23.35\00:06:25.25 This is also a country with religious liberty. 00:06:28.28\00:06:33.82 We can preach, 00:06:33.86\00:06:35.19 we can hold church services in public squares. 00:06:35.22\00:06:40.16 Wherever we want, we can preach the Word of God, 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.06 and there's tolerance. 00:06:43.10\00:06:44.43 Now, what are the major challenges 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.97 that you face as a church here in Panama? 00:06:51.01\00:06:53.27 Our greatest challenge is to reach the city. 00:06:56.58\00:06:59.91 On average, 200 to 300 families 00:06:59.95\00:07:02.38 live in each of the buildings behind us. 00:07:02.42\00:07:06.92 Our greatest challenge is to know 00:07:06.96\00:07:09.32 how to bring the Adventist message 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.66 to the people in the city. 00:07:11.69\00:07:15.23 So we carefully plan to reach to people 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.93 who live in these apartment buildings. 00:07:17.97\00:07:19.90 There are more than 2 million people 00:07:23.07\00:07:25.07 in the capital city of Panama. 00:07:25.11\00:07:28.44 That's half of all the country's population 00:07:28.48\00:07:31.21 in one city. 00:07:31.25\00:07:32.58 Big challenge. 00:07:37.35\00:07:38.69 Big challenge. 00:07:38.72\00:07:40.06 So, Pastor, what sorts of things 00:07:40.09\00:07:41.99 are you doing in the city to try to reach the people? 00:07:42.02\00:07:45.13 We're working to start small groups 00:07:48.86\00:07:50.77 inside each building, 00:07:50.80\00:07:53.20 meeting people and making friends 00:07:53.23\00:07:56.10 with the residents in the apartment complex. 00:07:56.14\00:07:58.24 We hold weekly meetings and recreating strategies 00:08:01.24\00:08:04.85 to reach the entire population, 00:08:04.88\00:08:09.48 through initiatives like 00:08:09.52\00:08:10.85 feeding the needy with missionary soup. 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.02 We also have the missionary taxi ministry 00:08:16.12\00:08:19.39 and other creative outreach initiatives around the city. 00:08:19.43\00:08:22.56 So can you tell me an experience of somebody 00:08:27.57\00:08:31.44 who has been influenced by the taxi ministry? 00:08:31.47\00:08:35.14 So we have a taxi ministry. 00:08:39.08\00:08:41.78 Every Adventist member 00:08:41.82\00:08:43.52 who owns transportation vehicles in Panama, 00:08:43.55\00:08:46.19 have a label that says 00:08:46.22\00:08:48.39 safe taxi Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:08:48.42\00:08:51.26 When a passenger enters the taxi, 00:08:55.73\00:08:58.50 the drivers play a CD or a cassette tape 00:08:58.53\00:09:01.34 to welcome the rider. 00:09:01.37\00:09:03.74 The message says welcome Mr. Passenger. 00:09:03.77\00:09:06.37 You have gotten into a safe taxi, 00:09:06.41\00:09:09.21 an Adventist taxi. 00:09:09.24\00:09:13.42 We want to encourage you to love Jesus 00:09:13.45\00:09:15.55 and study His Word. 00:09:15.58\00:09:18.55 Then a message of inspiration plays 00:09:18.59\00:09:21.06 to leave a positive impression on the passenger's mind. 00:09:21.09\00:09:25.99 On Fridays, the last taxi ride is free of charge. 00:09:26.03\00:09:30.43 This way the driver has an opportunity 00:09:30.47\00:09:32.67 to explain that the Sabbath begins after this last ride. 00:09:32.70\00:09:36.27 The Sabbath. 00:09:41.11\00:09:43.31 Yes, it's free of charge because of the Sabbath. 00:09:43.35\00:09:47.12 So the Adventist taxi drivers tell the passengers 00:09:47.15\00:09:50.62 this ride will cost you nothing 00:09:50.65\00:09:52.45 because I've dedicated this ride to God. 00:09:52.49\00:09:56.42 And they go out of their way to help passengers 00:09:56.46\00:09:58.66 with heavy luggage and suitcases 00:09:58.69\00:10:01.16 like carrying them to their door. 00:10:01.20\00:10:03.23 Then the driver waves goodbye and explains 00:10:03.26\00:10:06.00 that they're going home to enjoy the Lord's Day. 00:10:06.03\00:10:10.87 Oh, very nice. 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.47 Now, Pastor, I know 00:10:12.51\00:10:13.84 that Christ's method of ministry 00:10:13.88\00:10:15.44 is very important to you. 00:10:15.48\00:10:17.45 Why is Christ's method so, such a priority? 00:10:17.48\00:10:22.22 Sister Ellen White explains 00:10:25.25\00:10:27.62 Christ's method is the only one that gets true results. 00:10:27.66\00:10:32.33 Christ's method is the best approach, 00:10:32.36\00:10:35.26 that's why pastors, laymen, elders, deacons, 00:10:35.30\00:10:39.33 every member here 00:10:39.37\00:10:40.70 is emphasizing Christ's method of ministering. 00:10:40.74\00:10:44.74 To befriend people, supply their needs, 00:10:44.77\00:10:47.34 show love and sympathy 00:10:47.38\00:10:49.28 and only then we can invite people to follow Jesus. 00:10:49.31\00:10:54.98 Then people come to church 00:10:55.02\00:10:57.12 and stay to receive God's blessing. 00:10:57.15\00:11:01.26 This is our emphasis here at the Panama Union. 00:11:01.29\00:11:03.59 Wonderful. 00:11:06.63\00:11:07.96 So what are your hopes for the future of the church 00:11:08.00\00:11:11.03 here in Panama? 00:11:11.07\00:11:14.90 My hope for my country is to preach the gospel quickly 00:11:14.94\00:11:18.64 that Jesus may come soon. 00:11:18.67\00:11:22.51 To preach the gospel to four and half million people 00:11:22.54\00:11:25.85 is one of the greatest challenges we have. 00:11:25.88\00:11:29.52 But in the end, I want to shout with my church. 00:11:29.55\00:11:33.02 We have finished the gospel preaching in Panama. 00:11:33.05\00:11:37.06 That's my hope. 00:11:37.09\00:11:38.43 That's my challenge. 00:11:38.46\00:11:39.79 That's my passion, 00:11:39.83\00:11:42.40 to work until the gospel's finally preached to everyone 00:11:42.43\00:11:45.93 in all of Panama. 00:11:45.97\00:11:47.30 Gracias, Pastor. 00:11:50.21\00:11:51.54 Thank you for sharing with us today. 00:11:51.57\00:11:52.91 Thank you. Thank you. 00:11:52.94\00:11:54.28 Viewers at home, please pray for the church 00:11:54.31\00:11:56.18 here in Panama pray, 00:11:56.21\00:11:57.55 pray for the pastors, the leaders, 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.41 and the church members, 00:11:59.45\00:12:00.95 and pray for this challenge here of Panama City. 00:12:00.98\00:12:04.19 People there who need to hear the good news about Jesus. 00:12:04.22\00:12:06.96 We'll be right back after this break. 00:12:06.99\00:12:08.86
