Welcome back to Andrews University. 00:00:07.00\00:00:08.84 And we're just at the entrance, 00:00:08.87\00:00:10.24 the main entrance of the campus. 00:00:10.27\00:00:12.41 And you can see this globe and I love the message here, 00:00:12.44\00:00:16.11 "Seek Knowledge," and around the corner it says, 00:00:16.14\00:00:18.81 "A firm faith change the world." 00:00:18.85\00:00:21.32 What a wonderful message that is. 00:00:21.35\00:00:23.59 Next up, let's travel to the country of Georgia. 00:00:23.62\00:00:26.65 I am in the country of Georgia 00:00:26.69\00:00:28.86 and we are in a place called The Cave city, 00:00:28.89\00:00:31.73 an old fortress back from the 10th century, 00:00:31.76\00:00:34.63 and even more ancient than that 00:00:34.66\00:00:37.03 for some of the pagan beginnings of it. 00:00:37.07\00:00:39.97 We recently came from the place where Stalin was born 00:00:40.00\00:00:43.71 and some of the history that happened there. 00:00:43.74\00:00:46.64 I'm here with Dmitriy Zubkov, 00:00:46.68\00:00:48.61 who is the Adventist mission director 00:00:48.64\00:00:50.28 for the Euro-Asia division. 00:00:50.31\00:00:52.95 And he has a fascinating 00:00:52.98\00:00:55.12 and tragic story about his grandfather 00:00:55.15\00:00:58.62 and his relationship with Stalin. 00:00:58.65\00:01:01.46 Please, Dmitriy, tell us the story. 00:01:01.49\00:01:03.89 Today, we visited historical places 00:01:08.56\00:01:10.63 of this country. 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.00 We're now 50 kilometers 00:01:12.03\00:01:13.37 from the place where Stalin lived. 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.60 This was Stalin's birthplace and where he was raised. 00:01:15.64\00:01:19.91 Stalin was at first known 00:01:19.94\00:01:21.64 for having received a good education 00:01:21.68\00:01:24.05 and unfortunately later, 00:01:24.08\00:01:25.41 he became a dictator of this whole country, 00:01:25.45\00:01:28.42 of the entire Soviet Union. 00:01:28.45\00:01:30.89 We often hear stories about Stalin. 00:01:30.92\00:01:33.36 And history tells us that he killed a lot of people, 00:01:33.39\00:01:36.16 especially those who believed in God. 00:01:36.19\00:01:38.56 This was a form of suppression and hatred against religion. 00:01:38.59\00:01:42.76 One of the stories about Stalin 00:01:42.80\00:01:44.47 involves my very own grandfather. 00:01:44.50\00:01:47.97 It happened in the 1930's, 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.94 when my grandfather was in the SARS service 00:01:49.97\00:01:52.37 in Kiev, Ukraine in Cherkasy Oblast territory. 00:01:52.41\00:01:57.88 My grandfather was a devout and faithful servant of God. 00:01:57.91\00:02:02.38 He did not own a car, not even a bicycle. 00:02:02.42\00:02:05.55 He often traveled on foot, 00:02:05.59\00:02:07.62 walking hundreds of kilometers 00:02:07.66\00:02:09.52 in order to visit different groups of believers. 00:02:09.56\00:02:14.83 My grandfather wanted to teach the Word of God 00:02:14.86\00:02:18.73 and about Jesus life on earth. 00:02:18.77\00:02:21.77 Sometimes he and his colleagues held communion service 00:02:21.80\00:02:25.11 during the night. 00:02:25.14\00:02:26.78 There was no time to waste. 00:02:26.81\00:02:28.44 They needed to move from place to place, 00:02:28.48\00:02:30.81 to reach as many people as possible. 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.55 You see, there were too few Adventist pastors at the time. 00:02:33.58\00:02:38.19 But during the war time, 00:02:38.22\00:02:39.75 where nearly everyone was drafted, 00:02:39.79\00:02:42.02 it was decided that clergymen had to be enlisted 00:02:42.06\00:02:45.29 to fight the enemy, just as well as anybody else. 00:02:45.33\00:02:50.47 So my grandfather was called 00:02:50.50\00:02:52.77 and when he refused to bear a weapon in his hands, 00:02:52.80\00:02:56.40 he was put into prison. 00:02:56.44\00:02:59.57 Then, he and others with him were marched 200 kilometers. 00:02:59.61\00:03:05.21 They were transported by train 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.45 and when they arrived there at a specific place, 00:03:07.48\00:03:09.92 their sentence was pronounced against them. 00:03:09.95\00:03:14.06 Against all of those who refused to bear a weapon. 00:03:14.09\00:03:18.83 There were Baptists, 00:03:18.86\00:03:20.40 there were Adventists and my grandfather 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.20 was a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. 00:03:23.23\00:03:26.87 Sadly, my grandfather was sentenced to death. 00:03:26.90\00:03:31.14 He would be shot 00:03:31.17\00:03:32.51 for his refusal to bear a weapon. 00:03:32.54\00:03:35.91 It's curious that Stalin himself 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.18 signed my grandfather's sentence. 00:03:38.21\00:03:40.32 So the soldiers could shoot him, 00:03:40.35\00:03:42.32 because of his faith, 00:03:42.35\00:03:43.69 because of his devotion to God, and to the Adventist Church. 00:03:43.72\00:03:48.46 All of this happened in 1944. 00:03:48.49\00:03:52.13 These were difficult times, 00:03:52.16\00:03:53.93 because my grandmother 00:03:53.96\00:03:55.30 was left to raise three children all alone. 00:03:55.33\00:03:58.63 My uncle was six, 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.34 my mother was four years old 00:04:00.37\00:04:02.44 and their youngest brother was only 6 months. 00:04:02.47\00:04:07.41 They continue to live together while keeping their faith 00:04:07.44\00:04:10.75 and attending church, 00:04:10.78\00:04:12.45 each one of them showed an exemplary faith 00:04:12.48\00:04:15.72 and the strong devotion to God. 00:04:15.75\00:04:18.95 For me, my grandfather remains in my memory 00:04:18.99\00:04:21.99 as a good and faithful servant of God, 00:04:22.02\00:04:24.56 who preached the gospel and remained true to his faith 00:04:24.59\00:04:27.83 until the very end of his life. 00:04:27.86\00:04:31.23 Now, we have freedom to preach the gospel. 00:04:31.27\00:04:34.00 We're now in Georgian territory 00:04:34.04\00:04:36.10 where lots of believers profess their faith 00:04:36.14\00:04:38.47 in the truth of the Word of God. 00:04:38.51\00:04:41.68 We also serve people 00:04:41.71\00:04:43.04 in the Euro-Asia division territory. 00:04:43.08\00:04:47.65 Our purpose today is to preach the gospel in every tribe, 00:04:47.68\00:04:51.82 language and nation, regardless of ethnicity. 00:04:51.85\00:04:55.89 Our task is to preach the gospel. 00:04:55.92\00:04:58.36 We're establishing centers of influence 00:04:58.39\00:05:00.46 here in the Caucasus 00:05:00.50\00:05:01.83 and in all the Euro-Asia division. 00:05:01.86\00:05:05.73 Our strategy is to start new communities 00:05:05.77\00:05:08.07 and new churches 00:05:08.10\00:05:10.04 as well as to expand the activities to other areas 00:05:10.07\00:05:13.14 in our territory. 00:05:13.17\00:05:14.88 The Lord offered us wonderful possibilities 00:05:14.91\00:05:17.58 and feed them in these days. 00:05:17.61\00:05:20.08 We don't know just how long this freedom will last. 00:05:20.12\00:05:23.25 So we make every moment count 00:05:23.28\00:05:25.25 to preach the gospel in the entire region. 00:05:25.29\00:05:27.59 Wow. 00:05:30.99\00:05:32.33 Thank you for the story and also for the report 00:05:32.36\00:05:34.76 on what's happening in this area. 00:05:34.80\00:05:37.50 There is an incredible... 00:05:37.53\00:05:40.27 Excuse me, 00:05:40.30\00:05:41.64 there is an incredible amount of work 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.54 to be done yet in this area. 00:05:43.57\00:05:45.37 Some of it is very dangerous. 00:05:45.41\00:05:48.04 And we need the prayers of the people 00:05:48.08\00:05:51.88 that are out there. 00:05:51.91\00:05:53.45 There is a lot of support for funding, 00:05:53.48\00:05:56.12 and that is wonderful, we need that. 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.15 But there are people in harm's way out here 00:05:58.19\00:06:00.82 and so, thank you for all of the work 00:06:00.86\00:06:03.02 that you are doing 00:06:03.06\00:06:04.39 and we pray that the work here 00:06:04.43\00:06:08.96 in this part of the world will be able to continue. 00:06:09.00\00:06:12.10 And thank you for sharing that story again. 00:06:12.13\00:06:14.14 You're welcome. Thank you for joining us today. 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.60 This has been a very interesting story 00:06:16.64\00:06:20.18 that we can learn from Dmitriy. 00:06:20.21\00:06:22.18 There are people around that have so many stories, 00:06:22.21\00:06:25.65 especially those that were here during the Soviet times 00:06:25.68\00:06:30.29 that will just blow your mind. 00:06:30.32\00:06:33.02 Continue to pray for this group of people 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.22 here in this part of the world. 00:06:35.26\00:06:37.79 Next up, let's see how your 13th Sabbath offerings 00:06:37.83\00:06:40.90 have made a big difference at a university in Madagascar. 00:06:40.93\00:06:44.10 Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. 00:06:54.48\00:06:58.11 It is situated 00:06:58.15\00:06:59.48 off the southeastern coast of Africa. 00:06:59.51\00:07:01.68 The population is approximately 25 million 00:07:01.72\00:07:04.72 and there's about 155 people for every Adventist. 00:07:04.75\00:07:09.39 Here, rice paddy fields stretch into their horizon, 00:07:09.42\00:07:12.59 both in the capital city of Antananarivo 00:07:12.63\00:07:15.53 and in the rural areas. 00:07:15.56\00:07:18.30 In this peaceful setting, 00:07:18.33\00:07:19.67 the Adventist Church owns and operates 00:07:19.70\00:07:21.80 the Adventist University of Zurcher. 00:07:21.84\00:07:24.97 This university offers affordable, 00:07:25.01\00:07:27.08 quality higher education in an environment 00:07:27.11\00:07:29.68 committed to Seventh-day Adventist values. 00:07:29.71\00:07:32.41 Since 1996, it has promoted the development 00:07:32.45\00:07:35.68 of the whole person through academic, 00:07:35.72\00:07:38.09 religious and social programs. 00:07:38.12\00:07:41.62 University Adventist Zurcher has received the funds 00:07:41.66\00:07:45.96 from the 13th Sabbath offerings on 2013 00:07:45.99\00:07:50.23 to build two buildings. 00:07:50.27\00:07:52.77 One has the university library 00:07:52.80\00:07:55.10 and the other one is for the technology building. 00:07:55.14\00:08:00.41 The construction of these two buildings 00:08:00.44\00:08:03.28 helped the university to accomplish its mission 00:08:03.31\00:08:06.72 by getting more students to come 00:08:06.75\00:08:08.82 to get university education. 00:08:08.85\00:08:12.69 The library is one of the biggest 00:08:12.72\00:08:14.69 university libraries in the country. 00:08:14.72\00:08:17.09 Many academic and spiritual books 00:08:17.13\00:08:19.16 lie in its shelves. 00:08:19.19\00:08:20.60 Students have online access 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.56 and enjoy open spaces for group study. 00:08:22.60\00:08:25.27 The building also houses 00:08:25.30\00:08:26.63 the Ellen G.White research center 00:08:26.67\00:08:28.60 and the language institute 00:08:28.64\00:08:30.14 where students can learn to read, 00:08:30.17\00:08:32.01 write and speak both French and English. 00:08:32.04\00:08:36.81 Marouha is a student at Zurcher. 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.21 She loves the language institute 00:08:39.25\00:08:41.05 and is grateful for the opportunity 00:08:41.08\00:08:42.58 to attend school here. 00:08:42.62\00:08:44.09 To her, Zurcher is more than just a school she studies at. 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.96 It's a place where she can live out her faith. 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.83 When Marouha first accepted the Adventist message 00:08:50.86\00:08:53.50 and chose to be baptized, 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.06 she feared her family would disown her 00:08:55.10\00:08:57.07 and send her away. 00:08:57.10\00:08:59.10 My parents didn't accept my decision. 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.20 It was a challenging time for me. 00:09:02.24\00:09:04.87 I drew strength from talking with teachers and friends. 00:09:04.91\00:09:08.48 My friends stayed by my side 00:09:08.51\00:09:09.84 and helped me stand firm in my decision. 00:09:09.88\00:09:12.45 Marouha now feels closer to God as she studies His Word 00:09:12.48\00:09:15.88 and connects with likeminded friends. 00:09:15.92\00:09:17.99 She is studying nursing, so she can help people in need. 00:09:18.02\00:09:21.36 Students have also benefitted 00:09:21.39\00:09:22.86 from the new technology building, 00:09:22.89\00:09:24.53 where the university expanded its curriculum. 00:09:24.56\00:09:27.13 Here, more students can be equipped 00:09:27.16\00:09:29.06 for this high demand field. 00:09:29.10\00:09:31.17 The new technology building is very nice. 00:09:31.20\00:09:33.80 We have a suitable laboratory. 00:09:33.84\00:09:35.54 The space is big, there's room for everyone 00:09:35.57\00:09:38.24 and we have one computer per student 00:09:38.27\00:09:39.91 for hands-on training. 00:09:39.94\00:09:41.28 I'd love to send a message to all Adventist members 00:09:46.41\00:09:50.09 who gave offerings for the 13th Sabbath 00:09:50.12\00:09:54.72 to University Adventist Zurcher. 00:09:54.76\00:09:57.39 Thank you because from your offerings, 00:09:57.43\00:09:59.83 we were able to made a dream a reality. 00:09:59.86\00:10:03.23 Thank you. 00:10:03.26\00:10:04.60 For more than a hundred years, 00:10:04.63\00:10:06.23 the 13th Sabbath Offering has empowered 00:10:06.27\00:10:08.44 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:10:08.47\00:10:10.01 to launch boats, 00:10:10.04\00:10:11.37 heal the sick, build schools, reach the unreached 00:10:11.41\00:10:14.84 and change lives in many countries. 00:10:14.88\00:10:17.81 Thank you for supporting the 13th Sabbath Offering 00:10:17.85\00:10:21.42 this quarter. 00:10:21.45\00:10:22.78 Well, thank you so much for joining us 00:10:38.03\00:10:39.73 on today's program 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.27 and I hope that you've been inspired 00:10:41.30\00:10:42.90 and challenged by our 360 degree view of mission 00:10:42.94\00:10:46.88 around the world. 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.24 From this campus, this Andrews University campus, 00:10:48.28\00:10:51.75 thousands of trained students 00:10:51.78\00:10:53.52 have gone to all parts of the world 00:10:53.55\00:10:55.55 to serve and to strengthen God's mission 00:10:55.58\00:10:58.25 in many far flung places. 00:10:58.29\00:11:00.66 And that made a huge difference in growing the kingdom of God. 00:11:00.69\00:11:03.99 I want to thank you for your continuing support 00:11:04.03\00:11:06.63 of mission around the world. 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.36 Whether you pray, whether you give, 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.33 whether you go, or whether you do all three, 00:11:10.37\00:11:13.23 we consider you to be part 00:11:13.27\00:11:14.64 of our Adventist Mission Family, 00:11:14.67\00:11:17.01 helping to support mission around the world. 00:11:17.04\00:11:19.87 And I pray that you will continue 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.44 to remember mission in your heart, in your prayers, 00:11:21.48\00:11:24.31 in your giving and in your service. 00:11:24.35\00:11:26.75 For Adventist Mission, I'm Gary Krause, 00:11:26.78\00:11:29.08 and I hope that you can join me next time, 00:11:29.12\00:11:31.35 right here on Mission 360°. 00:11:31.39\00:11:33.39
