Turning potatoes into porcupines 00:00:07.80\00:00:09.84 facilitates mission in Georgia. 00:00:09.87\00:00:12.31 A man tithes 100 cows in Tanzania, 00:00:12.34\00:00:15.88 and the sights and sounds of Chicago 00:00:15.91\00:00:18.01 coming up next. 00:00:18.05\00:00:19.38 Hello and welcome to Mission 360, 00:00:51.95\00:00:53.85 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:53.88\00:00:55.22 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:55.25\00:00:56.72 from the city of Chicago in the United States. 00:00:56.75\00:01:00.29 Back in the 1800's Dr. David Paulsen 00:01:00.32\00:01:03.46 and Dr. John Harvey Kellogg moved into the heart of Chicago 00:01:03.49\00:01:07.60 to start the Chicago Medical Mission, 00:01:07.63\00:01:10.23 an urban center of influence 00:01:10.27\00:01:12.03 administered to the poor and needy of that city. 00:01:12.07\00:01:15.30 But at the turn of the century 00:01:15.34\00:01:16.67 Dr. David Paulsen got a vision to start 00:01:16.71\00:01:20.18 a sanatorium out in the countryside. 00:01:20.21\00:01:23.38 And I am now standing 00:01:23.41\00:01:24.81 in what was once the countryside, 00:01:24.85\00:01:26.98 Hinsdale, now a suburb of Chicago. 00:01:27.02\00:01:30.02 Behind me you can see 00:01:30.05\00:01:31.39 the Hinsdale Adventist Hospital, 00:01:31.42\00:01:33.46 and this is the location of the sanatorium 00:01:33.49\00:01:36.32 that was established by Dr. Paulsen. 00:01:36.36\00:01:38.73 People from all over the world came here 00:01:38.76\00:01:41.16 to the Hinsdale Sanatorium for health and healing. 00:01:41.20\00:01:45.10 Well, on today's program we'll be looking at mission 00:01:45.13\00:01:47.27 all around the world but first up, 00:01:47.30\00:01:49.24 let's travel to the country of Georgia 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.44 to see an urban center of influence in action. 00:01:51.47\00:01:53.81 How do you turn a potato into a porcupine? 00:02:01.15\00:02:04.19 That's exactly what children in the country of Georgia 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.96 are learning today in their English class. 00:02:06.99\00:02:09.49 This is their second lesson about fruits and vegetables. 00:02:09.52\00:02:12.63 They're learning the names of common vegetables 00:02:12.66\00:02:14.70 as they transform them into animals 00:02:14.73\00:02:16.87 and modes of transportation. 00:02:16.90\00:02:18.97 Ginta, their teacher, 00:02:19.00\00:02:20.54 uses interactive teaching methods 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.40 to keep them engaged. 00:02:22.44\00:02:24.07 And even includes their parents in the action. 00:02:24.11\00:02:29.24 They're studying a variety of topics 00:02:29.28\00:02:30.75 ranging from numbers to colors. 00:02:30.78\00:02:33.31 We just enjoy, 00:02:33.35\00:02:34.68 even if somebody don't know something, 00:02:34.72\00:02:36.45 we just show the color and remind them 00:02:36.48\00:02:40.92 how to pronounce it correctly and we just enjoy it. 00:02:40.96\00:02:46.39 Originally from Latvia, Ginta came to Georgia 00:02:46.43\00:02:49.30 to spend a year volunteering 00:02:49.33\00:02:50.93 at this Global Mission Urban Center of Influence. 00:02:50.97\00:02:54.30 She started a hand on English class for children 00:02:54.34\00:02:57.01 and she's very proud of her student's creations. 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.71 Maybe I can show something. 00:02:59.74\00:03:04.51 Like, yeah, you see from one of the lessons 00:03:04.55\00:03:09.42 when we learned about animals, 00:03:09.45\00:03:11.99 we made butterflies like this on previous lesson. 00:03:12.02\00:03:17.96 Pause up. 00:03:17.99\00:03:19.33 And previous lesson when we learned something 00:03:22.80\00:03:25.40 like fruits and vegetables. 00:03:25.43\00:03:27.47 We made just stamps for 00:03:27.50\00:03:31.27 lemon and pepper, like this. 00:03:31.31\00:03:34.34 But living in a different culture 00:03:38.38\00:03:39.75 can bring certain challenges and adjustments. 00:03:39.78\00:03:42.98 It's really hard for me, you know, 00:03:43.02\00:03:45.69 you are from other country and they don't know you. 00:03:45.72\00:03:48.62 They, in beginning start watching 00:03:48.66\00:03:50.93 what I'm doing, how I'm doing, 00:03:50.96\00:03:52.59 but now they start to be like friends for me 00:03:52.63\00:03:55.16 and today even a few said, teacher, we love you. 00:03:55.20\00:03:59.17 It's very nice and the parent's, 00:03:59.20\00:04:01.60 it's the same for them. 00:04:01.64\00:04:02.97 In the beginning they, 00:04:03.00\00:04:04.34 it was very like, distant, distance, 00:04:04.37\00:04:06.14 and afterwards they start to, 00:04:06.17\00:04:08.94 yeah, I guess they're starting to trust. 00:04:08.98\00:04:11.98 Ginta has gotten to know 00:04:12.01\00:04:13.35 these students through these programs. 00:04:13.38\00:04:15.08 And finds it easier to share a hopeful message 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.69 when a relationship has been established. 00:04:17.72\00:04:20.16 Not just be a teacher, but be like friends for them. 00:04:20.19\00:04:24.49 And I really hope will be a possibility to tell them 00:04:24.53\00:04:28.73 more about Jesus 00:04:28.76\00:04:30.10 and somebody who very loves them. 00:04:30.13\00:04:33.60 Fifteen year old Simon has been coming 00:04:33.64\00:04:35.64 to Ginta's English classes over the last few months. 00:04:35.67\00:04:39.24 After many questions and conversations, 00:04:39.27\00:04:41.64 Simon is eager to study the Bible 00:04:41.68\00:04:43.88 and the Adventist message. 00:04:43.91\00:04:46.78 I'm interested in Christ's second coming. 00:04:46.82\00:04:50.39 I'm going through the Bible lessons 00:04:50.42\00:04:51.99 in preparation for baptism. 00:04:52.02\00:04:54.59 My life has changed. 00:04:54.62\00:04:57.99 Through these programs, about 15-20 people in this town 00:04:58.03\00:05:01.73 started Bible studies with Gotcha, 00:05:01.76\00:05:03.87 a global mission pioneer, 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.83 and a small group meets each Sabbath. 00:05:05.87\00:05:09.37 Ginta is encouraged to share the love of Jesus 00:05:09.40\00:05:12.34 with the community through English classes, 00:05:12.37\00:05:14.61 despite the challenges. 00:05:14.64\00:05:16.51 Please pray for Ginta as she develops friendships 00:05:16.54\00:05:19.58 with students and parents in Georgia. 00:05:19.61\00:05:22.48 Thank you for your continued support 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.62 of Global Mission Projects like these. 00:05:24.65\00:05:28.39 I'm here in the suburbs of Chicago in Illinois 00:05:28.42\00:05:32.13 and with me is Pastor Andres Flores 00:05:32.16\00:05:35.16 who is the senior pastor of the Epic Church in Chicago, 00:05:35.20\00:05:39.83 but also the pastor of this church plant here. 00:05:39.87\00:05:42.40 Describe what we're standing in here, Pastor? 00:05:42.44\00:05:44.97 Well, we're standing at Yorktown Mall. 00:05:45.01\00:05:47.48 This is a mall right in the center of the city 00:05:47.51\00:05:50.21 of Lombard into DuPage County here in the state of Illinois. 00:05:50.25\00:05:52.78 We're about 25 to 30 minutes from the city of Chicago 00:05:52.81\00:05:56.69 and this is a church plant that was born 00:05:56.72\00:05:58.72 out of the original church, 00:05:58.75\00:06:00.72 Epic Church in the city of Chicago. 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.32 So you planted a church in Chicago, 00:06:03.36\00:06:06.09 but you weren't content with just growing that church. 00:06:06.13\00:06:08.90 You had a vision for planting other spaces 00:06:08.93\00:06:11.50 and this is the first one, 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.37 and this is Chicago suburbs, right? 00:06:13.40\00:06:15.50 Correct. Correct. 00:06:15.54\00:06:16.87 Yeah. So, how did you start here? 00:06:16.91\00:06:19.14 Well, we started with a vision to multiply churches 00:06:19.17\00:06:22.91 that are disciple making churches. 00:06:22.94\00:06:24.91 So we started with the developing 00:06:24.95\00:06:27.12 core group of people 00:06:27.15\00:06:28.58 that were passionate about planting other churches 00:06:28.62\00:06:31.72 in the Chicago land area. 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.25 And God provided a very strong group to start 00:06:33.29\00:06:36.36 with a new church plant and incubate a new core group. 00:06:36.39\00:06:41.06 And this is exactly what is happening right now. 00:06:41.10\00:06:43.50 Wonderful. 00:06:43.53\00:06:44.87 So, but let's just walk through here 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.23 and you can describe what we're seeing, 00:06:46.27\00:06:47.60 this is quite a nice space here you got. 00:06:47.64\00:06:49.74 How many people are coming on Sabbath afternoons now? 00:06:49.77\00:06:52.67 You know, we may have an average of 45-55 people 00:06:52.71\00:06:56.78 in the incubation process, and we're going to launch 00:06:56.81\00:07:00.02 the church publicly in the month of October. 00:07:00.05\00:07:02.38 Fantastic. 00:07:02.42\00:07:03.79 But the thing that really intrigues me 00:07:03.82\00:07:05.52 is as we walk outside of this space, 00:07:05.55\00:07:08.56 we come into something which is very unusual. 00:07:08.59\00:07:11.19 Describe what this is here? 00:07:11.23\00:07:13.06 Well, we are right now, in, 00:07:13.09\00:07:16.00 again as I said we are in a storefront, 00:07:16.03\00:07:18.23 we are renting, God provided storefront 00:07:18.27\00:07:22.57 here in the Yorktown Mall. 00:07:22.60\00:07:24.81 So our vision was not only to do church for us, 00:07:24.84\00:07:28.14 we wanted to have an outreach, a very strong outreach 00:07:28.18\00:07:31.05 and international presence in the community. 00:07:31.08\00:07:33.82 So basically using the terminology 00:07:33.85\00:07:36.38 that I understand, this is a center of influence, 00:07:36.42\00:07:39.05 because you are connecting the church to the community. 00:07:39.09\00:07:42.66 Exactly, so this is an interface, 00:07:42.69\00:07:44.76 it's a relational environment that serves as an interface 00:07:44.79\00:07:47.93 for us to connect with people in the community 00:07:47.96\00:07:50.17 through art, and music, and creativity. 00:07:50.20\00:07:53.57 It is a space where people can belong 00:07:53.60\00:07:56.20 and then as they belong they come to believe as well. 00:07:56.24\00:07:59.67 Fantastic. 00:07:59.71\00:08:01.04 So rather than expecting people to walk into a church, 00:08:01.08\00:08:04.55 and that's gonna be very difficult for many people, 00:08:04.58\00:08:06.95 you actually have an opportunity 00:08:06.98\00:08:08.92 here where you can put Christ's method into practice. 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.99 You can mingle 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.35 and you can connect with people. 00:08:12.39\00:08:13.72 Exactly, exactly. 00:08:13.76\00:08:15.16 And the point of this 00:08:15.19\00:08:16.52 is that as we invite people to create art, 00:08:16.56\00:08:20.60 they feel safe, they come with their families 00:08:20.63\00:08:23.23 and here we are ready 00:08:23.26\00:08:25.03 to start conversations with them. 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.77 I mean once we mingle with them, 00:08:26.80\00:08:28.47 once we start conversations with them, 00:08:28.50\00:08:30.51 many of them start building a relationship with us. 00:08:30.54\00:08:32.97 We initiate a relationship with them 00:08:33.01\00:08:34.88 and we show them the hope that we have, 00:08:34.91\00:08:37.08 the faith that we have and they feel safe to do that 00:08:37.11\00:08:40.38 in the context of this relational environment. 00:08:40.42\00:08:43.15 Fantastic. 00:08:43.18\00:08:44.52 So what are the activities 00:08:44.55\00:08:45.89 that take place here in the art space? 00:08:45.92\00:08:47.92 We do a lot of activities that, 00:08:47.96\00:08:50.09 all of them have to do either with art, even music, 00:08:50.13\00:08:54.10 and relationships 00:08:54.13\00:08:55.46 but we have a really strong ministry 00:08:55.50\00:08:58.00 through our with pottery, painting, 00:08:58.03\00:09:00.57 all sorts of creative activities 00:09:00.60\00:09:03.30 here for the entire community, crafts, and so on and so forth. 00:09:03.34\00:09:08.21 It's really beautiful. Wonderful. 00:09:08.24\00:09:09.84 So this is not only open here on Sabbath, 00:09:09.88\00:09:13.38 but it's also open at various times during the week? 00:09:13.42\00:09:16.35 It is. It is. 00:09:16.38\00:09:17.75 So we open, we open the Arts Space 00:09:17.79\00:09:20.79 throughout the week for different people 00:09:20.82\00:09:22.46 to come here, connect. 00:09:22.49\00:09:23.83 We invite different groups from the community, 00:09:23.86\00:09:25.69 we like to partner with different schools, 00:09:25.73\00:09:27.90 with different places, 00:09:27.93\00:09:29.26 different groups that are really interested 00:09:29.30\00:09:31.60 in bringing their children here, 00:09:31.63\00:09:33.07 but what that does is that it allows us to build bridges 00:09:33.10\00:09:35.90 with people in the community. 00:09:35.94\00:09:37.34 We are one more presence in the community, 00:09:37.37\00:09:39.41 we are not coming in as an outsider. 00:09:39.44\00:09:42.14 Now we have built credibility and what I really like 00:09:42.18\00:09:46.61 about this concept is that 00:09:46.65\00:09:47.98 it's not short term credibility, 00:09:48.02\00:09:49.68 it's longer term credibility 00:09:49.72\00:09:51.25 that allows us to really be here without them 00:09:51.29\00:09:54.12 feeling that we're trying to gain something for them. 00:09:54.16\00:09:57.06 Instead we are trying to give them something 00:09:57.09\00:09:59.96 that they can be blessed with. 00:10:00.00\00:10:01.93 Fantastic. 00:10:01.96\00:10:03.30 That's so important that 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.67 you're not seen as an outsider coming in, 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.63 but you're actually someone in the community, 00:10:06.67\00:10:09.14 caring for the community. 00:10:09.17\00:10:10.51 Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.17 Now, before you were telling me 00:10:12.21\00:10:14.14 the story of a family from another religion. 00:10:14.18\00:10:17.68 Can you just briefly tell that story again 00:10:17.71\00:10:20.25 of how this little boy's life has been touched? 00:10:20.28\00:10:22.58 Yes, absolutely. 00:10:22.62\00:10:23.95 This is a family just from 00:10:23.99\00:10:25.32 a different religious background. 00:10:25.35\00:10:26.69 And the little boy, he's a beautiful boy, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.89 he's autistic and again they do not belong 00:10:28.92\00:10:31.79 to our denomination or to our Christian faith 00:10:31.83\00:10:34.06 but the beauty of it is that 00:10:34.10\00:10:35.43 through the relational environment, 00:10:35.46\00:10:37.57 this boy, he's blind and he got curious 00:10:37.60\00:10:41.17 because of the music that the praise team was practicing. 00:10:41.20\00:10:44.44 He came into the art space, into the worship center 00:10:44.47\00:10:47.54 and he asked one of the praise leaders 00:10:47.58\00:10:49.24 if he could sing with them and she said, yes. 00:10:49.28\00:10:52.38 Now the beautiful thing about 00:10:52.41\00:10:53.78 this is that in the middle of the song, 00:10:53.82\00:10:55.58 he asked the question, who is God? 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.59 Tell me about this God of yours? 00:10:58.62\00:11:00.46 And she started to unpack the beauty of God 00:11:00.49\00:11:03.76 and who is He and then the following week, 00:11:03.79\00:11:05.99 even his family came into the worship space as well 00:11:06.03\00:11:08.56 and we have a really strong relationship 00:11:08.60\00:11:10.13 with them right now. 00:11:10.17\00:11:11.57 So this little boy, he's blind, he's autistic, 00:11:11.60\00:11:14.50 he was in the Arts Space, he was drawn to the music 00:11:14.54\00:11:17.27 and he asked whether he could join the singers. 00:11:17.31\00:11:20.08 And then during the singing, he asked, "Who is God?" 00:11:20.11\00:11:22.68 Exactly. That is a beautiful story. 00:11:22.71\00:11:25.21 Now the other dimension of that, 00:11:25.25\00:11:26.85 that I really, really like is that the person 00:11:26.88\00:11:30.39 he asked was not yet a baptized Seventh-day Adventist, 00:11:30.42\00:11:33.62 she's participating and she was the one 00:11:33.66\00:11:35.99 who told him about God. 00:11:36.02\00:11:37.83 That's correct. That's correct. It's beautiful, beautiful. 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.59 And they have developed a relationship, 00:11:39.63\00:11:41.53 to stay in a relationship with that family 00:11:41.56\00:11:44.33 and I think that would have never happened 00:11:44.37\00:11:46.84 in a traditional evangelistic setting. 00:11:46.87\00:11:49.80 That took place in an open relational setting 00:11:49.84\00:11:53.21 such as the Arts Space. 00:11:53.24\00:11:55.34 So, as you said earlier, you're providing a context 00:11:55.38\00:11:58.71 where they can start to feel as if they're home, 00:11:58.75\00:12:01.12 as if they're belonging and that then provides a space 00:12:01.15\00:12:04.12 for them to start believing? 00:12:04.15\00:12:05.99 Exactly. Wonderful. 00:12:06.02\00:12:09.09 Well, you know, viewers at home, 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.73 what a terrific idea this is, right? 00:12:11.76\00:12:14.63 In the heart of a shopping mall, 00:12:14.66\00:12:16.03 I mean if this was a church plant 00:12:16.06\00:12:18.00 just out on the street somewhere, 00:12:18.03\00:12:19.53 you would not have many people coming past, 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.50 particularly here in the suburbs. 00:12:21.54\00:12:23.37 But here you have a shopping mall, 00:12:23.41\00:12:25.77 you have a busy children's playground right here 00:12:25.81\00:12:29.64 and a space where people can come 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.91 where they can find community. 00:12:31.95\00:12:34.52 It's an opportunity for Adventist believers 00:12:34.55\00:12:36.65 to mingle with people in the public 00:12:36.69\00:12:38.59 and we're starting to see how lives are being touched. 00:12:38.62\00:12:41.36 Pastor Andres, thank you so much 00:12:41.39\00:12:42.72 for sharing with us today. 00:12:42.76\00:12:44.09 Thank you. 00:12:44.13\00:12:45.46 And please pray for Epic, 00:12:45.49\00:12:46.83 the Church that's now operating in downtown, Chicago. 00:12:46.86\00:12:50.83 The plant here in the suburbs that 00:12:50.87\00:12:52.93 God will continue to bless 00:12:52.97\00:12:54.80 and grow this wonderful ministry. 00:12:54.84\00:12:57.14 We'll be right back after this break. 00:12:57.17\00:12:58.77
