00:01:22.58\00:01:25.88 Well, he met a pastor, a German pastor 00:01:25.91\00:01:28.72 by the name of Richard Conradi, in Berlin, Germany. 00:01:28.75\00:01:33.52 And he got to know the gospel through this pastor, 00:01:33.56\00:01:38.33 and he was baptized with 19 years old. 00:01:38.36\00:01:41.36 Wow, praise God. 00:01:41.40\00:01:42.76 And then when he was supposed to go 00:01:42.80\00:01:44.77 to the army, when he would complete 20, 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.70 he came to America in the company 00:01:47.74\00:01:50.57 of another pastor who by the name was Otto Lipke. 00:01:50.61\00:01:55.64 So they were both envisioned 00:01:55.68\00:01:58.41 with the passion to serve the Lord, 00:01:58.45\00:02:00.95 and they came to America 00:02:00.98\00:02:02.32 because they would not want to serve the army 00:02:02.35\00:02:04.69 but to the Lord. 00:02:04.72\00:02:06.42 So they came to America 00:02:06.45\00:02:08.62 and then they started working in Battle Creek. 00:02:08.66\00:02:13.53 So this missionary happened to know Dr. Kellogg 00:02:13.56\00:02:18.40 and he learned a lot of lessons, 00:02:18.43\00:02:20.77 important lessons with Dr. Kellogg. 00:02:20.80\00:02:23.00 He still worked with Dr. Kellogg 00:02:23.04\00:02:26.17 in Cavin's Milk Factory, 00:02:26.21\00:02:30.05 which is very interesting because 00:02:30.08\00:02:32.31 there was a lot of patients in the sanatorium, 00:02:32.35\00:02:36.08 that were allergic to lactoses. 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.12 Oh. 00:02:39.15\00:02:40.49 And at that time, Dr. Kellogg knew that 00:02:40.52\00:02:43.22 the Cavin's milk were feedable 00:02:43.26\00:02:46.46 for those allergic to lactoses. 00:02:46.49\00:02:49.90 And Pastor Lipke which at that time 00:02:49.93\00:02:52.97 was simply a missionary in America happened to work 00:02:53.00\00:02:56.81 in this specific department. 00:02:56.84\00:02:59.51 So, is a long, long and beautiful story of this, 00:02:59.54\00:03:04.15 this missionary. 00:03:04.18\00:03:05.51 Great, so it sounds like 00:03:05.55\00:03:06.88 he was pretty involved in medical mission work, 00:03:06.92\00:03:09.38 is that correct? 00:03:09.42\00:03:10.75 Yes, he began with this area. 00:03:10.79\00:03:12.85 That was his first challenge, 00:03:12.89\00:03:15.26 and he worked here in America for two years. 00:03:15.29\00:03:20.10 This was the right amount of time for him 00:03:20.13\00:03:24.30 to develop some skills in the area of health. 00:03:24.33\00:03:28.57 So he worked and studied in Battle Creek, 00:03:28.60\00:03:32.74 in the medical missionary school, 00:03:32.77\00:03:35.94 that Dr. Kellogg opened. 00:03:35.98\00:03:38.08 And then he went 00:03:38.11\00:03:39.75 to the Union College in Nebraska. 00:03:39.78\00:03:44.32 There he found his future wife by the name of Augusta Lipke. 00:03:44.35\00:03:49.69 So she was from Missouri, and they met together 00:03:49.72\00:03:54.06 and they married, 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.86 and then they decided to be missionaries. 00:03:55.90\00:03:58.97 And from the United States of America, 00:03:59.00\00:04:01.27 they went to South America. 00:04:01.30\00:04:04.04 And this happened in 1898, October. 00:04:04.07\00:04:08.91 So that was the precise time 00:04:08.94\00:04:11.78 in which they arrived in our country, Brazil. 00:04:11.81\00:04:14.88 Okay, great. 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.25 So what did they do in Brazil as missionaries? 00:04:16.28\00:04:20.69 I used to say that Lipke used to live with Dr. Kellogg 00:04:20.72\00:04:25.39 and I believe that many people who worked with Dr. Kellogg, 00:04:25.43\00:04:29.33 they had a very broad view of life 00:04:29.36\00:04:32.17 and they think big. 00:04:32.20\00:04:34.70 While living with Dr. Kellogg, 00:04:34.74\00:04:38.67 Pastor John Lipke got some ideas 00:04:38.71\00:04:43.41 and he went to Brazil. 00:04:43.45\00:04:45.21 The first thing that he decided to do 00:04:45.25\00:04:48.18 was to open a school. 00:04:48.22\00:04:51.42 So he went to a city 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.19 that was in the very countryside area 00:04:54.22\00:04:58.66 of one state called Santa Catarina, 00:04:58.69\00:05:04.63 and then there he opened 00:05:04.67\00:05:06.94 a kind of a college school. 00:05:06.97\00:05:11.21 And then what happened? 00:05:11.24\00:05:12.94 He started teaching and preparing the first pastors 00:05:12.97\00:05:17.75 and missionaries that would work in Brazil 00:05:17.78\00:05:22.35 and in South America. 00:05:22.38\00:05:24.95 He was envisioned for education. 00:05:24.99\00:05:27.36 That was his first job in Brazil. 00:05:27.39\00:05:31.29 Fascinating. 00:05:31.33\00:05:32.66 So it sounds like 00:05:32.69\00:05:34.20 he wanted to pass on that vision to others 00:05:34.23\00:05:38.17 to continue that work in Brazil? 00:05:38.20\00:05:40.20 What was the impact that you found 00:05:40.24\00:05:43.30 in your research that Pastor Lipke had 00:05:43.34\00:05:46.27 in his mission work in Brazil? 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.01 Well as I mentioned to you, he was a man of big ideas, 00:05:48.04\00:05:52.91 so he was first of all colporteur in Brazil. 00:05:52.95\00:05:56.99 He was a teacher. 00:05:57.02\00:05:58.72 He was a principal of this school. 00:05:58.75\00:06:02.22 Then he was president of one of the conferences. 00:06:02.26\00:06:06.23 Then he became the president of the first college in Brazil, 00:06:06.26\00:06:11.10 which opened in 1915. 00:06:11.13\00:06:14.50 That today is UNASP, that you call. 00:06:14.54\00:06:17.67 Yes. University of Sao Paulo. 00:06:17.71\00:06:20.88 But something very remarkable happened in 1920. 00:06:20.91\00:06:25.68 1920, Pastor Lipke 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.15 look to all the work of the church 00:06:28.18\00:06:30.89 in Brazil and he said, 00:06:30.92\00:06:33.15 something is missing in the church. 00:06:33.19\00:06:36.06 One of the segments of the church was not open. 00:06:36.09\00:06:40.96 And what was it? The medical work. 00:06:41.00\00:06:46.43 So and then he started looking after people 00:06:46.47\00:06:49.07 that would go to America to prepare 00:06:49.10\00:06:51.54 and do the medical course in Loma Linda, 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.11 but no one show up. 00:06:54.14\00:06:56.58 And then he said, 00:06:56.61\00:06:58.65 so if no one wants to go, I will go. 00:06:58.68\00:07:03.08 So he asked for a license and then he came to Loma Linda, 00:07:03.12\00:07:08.39 and here he stayed for six years, 00:07:08.42\00:07:12.63 working as a evangelist, a colporteur, 00:07:12.66\00:07:17.10 paying his fees and then he finished his course, 00:07:17.13\00:07:21.07 went back to Brazil to serve as a medical doctor. 00:07:21.10\00:07:27.04 Wow, that's fascinating. 00:07:27.08\00:07:28.41 So, and then he opened the first clinic 00:07:28.44\00:07:30.61 that became the first hospital 00:07:30.65\00:07:33.31 and then we have today, 00:07:33.35\00:07:35.38 several hospitals in Brazil, several clinics, 00:07:35.42\00:07:38.05 and spas and so on. 00:07:38.09\00:07:39.85 And praise God for having Pastor Lipke in our country. 00:07:39.89\00:07:43.63 Right. 00:07:43.66\00:07:44.99 It sounds like Pastor Lipke made a huge impact 00:07:45.03\00:07:47.60 in a variety of areas, whether medical, 00:07:47.63\00:07:50.03 administrative or in education. 00:07:50.07\00:07:52.87 It's such a blessing to hear of his story. 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.14 Thank you so much, Pastor Stencel, 00:07:55.17\00:07:57.24 for sharing the story of Pastor Lipke with us today. 00:07:57.27\00:08:00.78 Thank you. 00:08:00.81\00:08:02.14 Reporting from Mission 360, I'm Chelsea Tyler. 00:08:02.18\00:08:05.55 Next up, we travel back to Europe, 00:08:05.58\00:08:07.52 to see your 13th Sabbath offerings in action. 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.39 People in the church many times don't understand 00:08:14.92\00:08:17.93 what I am talking about. 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.70 This is the biggest challenge for me. 00:08:20.73\00:08:22.73 How I can be part of the world as a salt, 00:08:22.76\00:08:26.60 where Jesus said you have to be salt, 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.87 and to be close with God. 00:08:28.90\00:08:30.84 This is my challenge for me and for my family. 00:08:30.87\00:08:34.71 To be very close with God 00:08:34.74\00:08:36.95 and to be close with the people outside. 00:08:36.98\00:08:39.65 Mostly, I am working with non-Christian people. 00:08:43.02\00:08:46.32 Pastor Jan lives in Ko ice, Slovakia. 00:08:51.19\00:08:54.80 His passion is working with people 00:08:54.83\00:08:56.80 who don't know about Jesus love for them, 00:08:56.83\00:08:59.13 especially the Roma community. 00:08:59.17\00:09:01.64 Many people will not associate with the Roma 00:09:01.67\00:09:04.01 and find ways to keep their distance. 00:09:04.04\00:09:06.01 Years of cultural differences have created a barrier 00:09:06.04\00:09:09.01 between the ethnic groups in the region. 00:09:09.04\00:09:11.15 But Jan feels called to reach out anyway. 00:09:11.18\00:09:14.45 He often organizes activities 00:09:14.48\00:09:16.32 with the Pathfinder club and outings 00:09:16.35\00:09:18.25 for underprivileged children and youth. 00:09:18.29\00:09:21.26 If you are working with the children, 00:09:21.29\00:09:22.82 you can touch parent's heart. 00:09:22.86\00:09:25.99 If I am good for children, parents are happy as well. 00:09:26.03\00:09:30.87 Pastor Jan works in the outskirts of KoA ice, 00:09:30.90\00:09:34.04 among the Roma community. 00:09:34.07\00:09:35.67 With each visit, he brings gifts. 00:09:35.70\00:09:38.07 These simple presents open the doors 00:09:38.11\00:09:40.24 and show them that he cares about them. 00:09:40.28\00:09:44.35 The Roma have challenging lives. 00:09:44.38\00:09:46.28 In this house, seven families live together. 00:09:46.31\00:09:50.02 One of the mothers is a Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:50.05\00:09:52.65 and she teaches the children stories from the Bible. 00:09:52.69\00:09:55.36 Pastor Jan stops here to greet his friends 00:10:06.94\00:10:09.30 and bring a word of encouragement. 00:10:09.34\00:10:12.34 Before leaving, the group takes a picture together, 00:10:12.37\00:10:14.98 to remember this special moment. 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.91 Meet Monika. 00:10:24.72\00:10:26.05 From a young age 00:10:26.09\00:10:27.42 she really wanted to participate 00:10:27.46\00:10:28.79 in activities with the Pathfinders. 00:10:28.82\00:10:30.73 But she faced a lot of challenges 00:10:30.76\00:10:32.19 with her family 00:10:32.23\00:10:33.56 because they believed the Adventists 00:10:33.60\00:10:34.93 would not be a good influence in her life. 00:10:34.96\00:10:38.30 Pastor Jan taught Monika 00:10:38.33\00:10:39.93 important truths from the Bible. 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.44 He also helped her find strength to succeed. 00:10:42.47\00:10:45.14 Despite her family's opposition and the scarce opportunities 00:10:45.17\00:10:48.54 in her community, today Monika is an example 00:10:48.58\00:10:52.51 to others in her village. 00:10:52.55\00:10:53.92 She is well educated 00:10:53.95\00:10:55.38 having graduated from university 00:10:55.42\00:10:57.42 and serves as an educational coordinator 00:10:57.45\00:10:59.75 at her town's community center. 00:10:59.79\00:11:02.16 Monika was very special person. 00:11:02.19\00:11:04.53 She was like a miracle because she wanted 00:11:04.56\00:11:08.20 to know about Jesus, everything. 00:11:08.23\00:11:09.93 She wanted to read Bible properly, 00:11:09.96\00:11:12.10 and then she started to teach another Bible. 00:11:12.13\00:11:15.00 I love to see the children coming with joy in their eyes. 00:11:18.47\00:11:23.98 They can see that I've changed because of Jesus. 00:11:24.01\00:11:29.18 I am so happy when they say 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.05 they want to be closer to Jesus and have a story like mine. 00:11:31.09\00:11:36.96 Monika and her husband now lead three groups of youth 00:11:36.99\00:11:40.03 and children at the local Adventist Church. 00:11:40.06\00:11:42.60 They hope to disciple others in the community 00:11:42.63\00:11:45.10 and mend broken relationships so God's Church can grow. 00:11:45.13\00:11:49.10 Please pray for Pastor Jan's 00:11:49.14\00:11:50.87 and Monika's outreach ministries. 00:11:50.91\00:11:53.38 This quarter, your 13th Sabbath offering 00:11:53.41\00:11:55.68 will support this work among vulnerable children 00:11:55.71\00:11:58.38 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. 00:11:58.41\00:12:01.42 It will also build a church 00:12:01.45\00:12:02.78 with a children's center in Bulgaria 00:12:02.82\00:12:04.82 and assist Adventist education in Spain and Germany. 00:12:04.85\00:12:08.69 Thank you for your support of the 13th Sabbath offering. 00:12:08.72\00:12:12.63 Well, thanks so much for joining us on today's program, 00:12:22.97\00:12:25.97 and I hope that you've been inspired and challenged 00:12:26.01\00:12:28.94 by our 360 degree view of mission around the world. 00:12:28.98\00:12:33.31 In urban areas, in rural areas, 00:12:33.35\00:12:35.68 we see that people on the frontlines of mission 00:12:35.72\00:12:38.49 are planting churches, touching lives,
