Your mission offerings at work in Europe, 00:00:05.10\00:00:07.50 the story of a pioneer missionary 00:00:07.54\00:00:10.14 and mission right here in Maine, 00:00:10.17\00:00:12.31 in the United States coming up next. 00:00:12.34\00:00:14.48 Hello and welcome to Mission 360, 00:00:48.11\00:00:50.21 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:50.25\00:00:51.61 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:51.65\00:00:53.25 from the city of Lewiston, 00:00:53.28\00:00:54.98 in the state of Maine in the United States. 00:00:55.02\00:00:58.75 Lewiston is the state's second largest city 00:00:58.79\00:01:01.19 which doesn't make it a very big city, 00:01:01.22\00:01:02.99 but there was no Seventh-day Adventist Church here. 00:01:03.02\00:01:07.00 And church leaders saw the need 00:01:07.03\00:01:09.06 and they put a plan in place 00:01:09.10\00:01:11.03 and many laypeople living in the area 00:01:11.07\00:01:14.07 came to run seminar and activities 00:01:14.10\00:01:16.71 and health programs 00:01:16.74\00:01:18.27 operating out of an old Pizza Hut 00:01:18.31\00:01:20.48 on the main road leading into the city. 00:01:20.51\00:01:22.81 They had a cafe and from this, 00:01:22.84\00:01:24.98 a small group was planted and now it's grown till 00:01:25.01\00:01:27.58 it's overflowing and it's too big 00:01:27.62\00:01:29.75 for the building in which it's in. 00:01:29.78\00:01:32.12 What we're gonna be looking at more mission 00:01:32.15\00:01:33.99 here in the United States and around the world, 00:01:34.02\00:01:36.22 but first up, let's travel to Europe 00:01:36.26\00:01:38.39 to see your 13th Sabbath offerings in action. 00:01:38.43\00:01:43.06 There were no kids 00:01:43.10\00:01:44.43 in the Sofia West Church in Bulgaria. 00:01:44.47\00:01:46.90 Fast forward five years 00:01:46.94\00:01:48.74 and children enter a whole new world 00:01:48.77\00:01:50.77 with arts and crafts. 00:01:50.81\00:01:53.48 Sofia is Bulgaria's capital and largest city. 00:01:53.51\00:01:56.64 It's a modern and dynamic place 00:01:56.68\00:01:58.68 with more than a million people. 00:01:58.71\00:02:00.42 Here you find relaxing parks, 00:02:00.45\00:02:02.58 convenient trams and exquisite architecture. 00:02:02.62\00:02:06.09 Unlike most of the buildings in Sofia, 00:02:06.12\00:02:08.52 this structure looks plain on the outside, 00:02:08.56\00:02:11.13 but in a small rented place inside, 00:02:11.16\00:02:13.50 it looks completely different. 00:02:13.53\00:02:16.73 Lyubka, a member of Sofia West Church 00:02:16.77\00:02:19.73 has dedicated her time to reaching out to these kids. 00:02:19.77\00:02:23.67 Together with volunteers from the church, 00:02:23.71\00:02:25.94 she meets the children at least twice a month. 00:02:25.97\00:02:28.68 Aside from the crafts, 00:02:28.71\00:02:30.15 they also teach the children about 00:02:30.18\00:02:31.88 life, family, education and health. 00:02:31.91\00:02:36.12 We teach them good values 00:02:36.15\00:02:37.82 and they enjoy a lot in our activities. 00:02:37.85\00:02:40.46 I think that in order to introduce Jesus, 00:02:40.49\00:02:43.19 we should also have hearts like children. 00:02:43.22\00:02:46.29 The main idea is to be able to reach people, 00:02:46.33\00:02:48.76 especially to their social needs. 00:02:48.80\00:02:51.37 Not directly in terms of faith and religious ideas, 00:02:51.40\00:02:54.50 but rather interacting with children, 00:02:54.54\00:02:57.04 solving family problems, 00:02:57.07\00:02:58.94 teaching them about the importance of health, 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.64 building connections, and establishing relationships. 00:03:01.68\00:03:05.21 The project was aptly named, Create Future. 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.38 A place where the church can foster children 00:03:08.42\00:03:10.59 and young adults to be future leaders, 00:03:10.62\00:03:12.89 but that doesn't mean that the activities 00:03:12.92\00:03:14.59 are only for young boys and girls. 00:03:14.62\00:03:17.36 Create Future aims 00:03:17.39\00:03:19.13 to attract kids and form a Bible group, 00:03:19.16\00:03:22.46 but the kids are so happy 00:03:22.50\00:03:24.07 that they get their parents interested 00:03:24.10\00:03:26.17 in what we are doing. 00:03:26.20\00:03:28.37 We can't turn their parents away 00:03:28.40\00:03:30.37 and say that this is just for kids. 00:03:30.41\00:03:32.74 So we work with parents as well. 00:03:32.77\00:03:35.14 Everyone works together to do something meaningful 00:03:35.18\00:03:38.01 and the masterpieces are sold to raise funds 00:03:38.05\00:03:40.45 to help those in need. 00:03:40.48\00:03:41.95 Create Future is teaching people 00:03:41.98\00:03:44.12 to be selfless and to serve their neighbors. 00:03:44.15\00:03:47.89 Through Create Future we can show the society, 00:03:47.92\00:03:51.16 our neighbors, the people around us, 00:03:51.19\00:03:53.73 that we care for them, that our faith in Jesus 00:03:53.76\00:03:56.97 is inspiring us to love everyone. 00:03:57.00\00:03:59.93 Through actions rather than empty words, 00:03:59.97\00:04:02.77 we can bring people to Jesus. 00:04:02.80\00:04:05.44 Through the activities, 00:04:05.47\00:04:06.81 Create Future participants grow closer to each other. 00:04:06.84\00:04:10.28 Lyubka feels like a mother to the children. 00:04:10.31\00:04:12.91 They're like her family. 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.38 I sincerely ask God to be with us 00:04:15.42\00:04:18.12 because I am convinced that 00:04:18.15\00:04:19.85 what God can do is a lot more than 00:04:19.89\00:04:22.79 what merely humans can do. 00:04:22.82\00:04:25.06 The church that started without kids, 00:04:25.09\00:04:27.50 now has 20 attending regularly. 00:04:27.53\00:04:30.37 And through them more people, both young and old are invited. 00:04:30.40\00:04:35.70 Your 13th Sabbath offering 00:04:35.74\00:04:37.34 will help build a children's center 00:04:37.37\00:04:39.07 and worship hall in Sofia. 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.91 The new facility will allow this church 00:04:40.94\00:04:42.91 to reach out to more people. 00:04:42.94\00:04:44.91 Let's pray for our friends in Sofia 00:04:44.95\00:04:47.25 as they establish meaningful relationships 00:04:47.28\00:04:49.65 with their community 00:04:49.68\00:04:51.02 and thanks for your support 00:04:51.05\00:04:53.19 of the 13th Sabbath offering. 00:04:53.22\00:04:57.29 My guest is Scott Christiansen, 00:04:57.33\00:04:59.19 who is the evangelist and communication director 00:04:59.23\00:05:02.33 for the Northern New England Conference. 00:05:02.36\00:05:04.43 Scott, thanks so much for joining me. 00:05:04.47\00:05:06.17 It's my pleasure. It's my pleasure, Gary. 00:05:06.20\00:05:07.54 Now, describe for us 00:05:07.57\00:05:08.90 the Northern New England Conference, 00:05:08.94\00:05:10.27 what does it entail? 00:05:10.31\00:05:11.64 Well, it entails three states and not that many people. 00:05:11.67\00:05:14.58 Okay. 00:05:14.61\00:05:15.94 There are churches in Southern California 00:05:15.98\00:05:17.61 that are bigger than our entire conference. 00:05:17.65\00:05:19.71 So we've got Vermont, and New Hampshire, 00:05:19.75\00:05:22.38 and Maine, which between them 00:05:22.42\00:05:24.55 I think have a total population 00:05:24.59\00:05:26.29 of somewhere around 5 million at the most. 00:05:26.32\00:05:30.73 No, 4, I'm sorry, 4 million at the most. 00:05:30.76\00:05:33.03 And in those 3 states we've got about 00:05:33.06\00:05:35.66 5,500 church members. 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.73 These states are, tend to, tend to skew old, 00:05:39.77\00:05:44.07 they tend to skew white. 00:05:44.11\00:05:48.68 There's not enough diversity here but we're working on that, 00:05:48.71\00:05:51.45 and they tend to skew culturally conservative. 00:05:51.48\00:05:56.18 Okay. 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.55 So that's the state and our church 00:05:57.59\00:06:00.42 is a reflection of that except for one thing. 00:06:00.46\00:06:03.26 These states are the most post-Christian place 00:06:03.29\00:06:07.23 in the entire United States of America. 00:06:07.26\00:06:09.13 Actually in the entire North American division, 00:06:09.16\00:06:11.47 and the church does not reflect that, 00:06:11.50\00:06:13.84 but we are pushing hard against that 00:06:13.87\00:06:16.27 and trying to proclaim 00:06:16.30\00:06:19.14 our important message at this time. 00:06:19.17\00:06:21.91 So as you face this real mission field, 00:06:21.94\00:06:24.31 because it is a mission field. 00:06:24.35\00:06:27.82 Tell us about the church planting strategy 00:06:27.85\00:06:30.55 that you've prayed through and planned through? 00:06:30.59\00:06:33.56 We have I think 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.09 what could only be called a very aggressive 00:06:35.12\00:06:37.49 planting strategy 00:06:37.53\00:06:39.09 and it works on a couple of levels. 00:06:39.13\00:06:40.93 We've got standard traditional plans 00:06:40.96\00:06:43.87 where a mother church 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.43 has given birth to a daughter church. 00:06:45.47\00:06:48.37 We have those, we have startup church plants 00:06:48.40\00:06:52.44 such as with our Ark congregation here, 00:06:52.47\00:06:55.74 where a group came together and really worked hard 00:06:55.78\00:06:59.65 and developed a congregation. 00:06:59.68\00:07:02.32 In addition to that 00:07:02.35\00:07:03.69 though we've got a very interesting project 00:07:03.72\00:07:05.59 where we are recruiting 00:07:05.62\00:07:07.42 faithful young people from across, 00:07:07.46\00:07:09.62 actually across the world, asking them to move here 00:07:09.66\00:07:13.09 on a tent making basis, training them, equipping them, 00:07:13.13\00:07:17.90 supporting them, guiding them but these young people, 00:07:17.93\00:07:22.90 we form them into teams and they live in a, 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.94 what might be called a missional community. 00:07:26.98\00:07:29.01 A very purpose oriented group in terms of reaching out 00:07:29.04\00:07:34.98 to their communities and gathering together 00:07:35.02\00:07:39.32 a group of seekers, 00:07:39.35\00:07:41.12 people that are spiritually interested 00:07:41.16\00:07:43.39 and spiritually open. 00:07:43.43\00:07:45.46 And moving them to a relationship 00:07:45.49\00:07:49.96 and the knowledge of Christ. 00:07:50.00\00:07:52.40 And I have to underscore, you know, 00:07:52.43\00:07:55.20 we think of evangelism as taking someone 00:07:55.24\00:07:58.44 to the decision point. 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.81 And traditionally it has been. 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.51 But when their knowledge and cultural familiarity 00:08:02.54\00:08:06.08 with Christianity is close to zero, 00:08:06.11\00:08:09.72 that moving people to a decision point 00:08:09.75\00:08:13.15 is tremendous change that takes time. 00:08:13.19\00:08:18.53 Whereas quite often, in evangelism in the past, 00:08:18.56\00:08:21.43 there has been a smaller change. 00:08:21.46\00:08:24.67 From Christian to our variety of Christians. 00:08:24.70\00:08:26.30 Yes, yes, exactly. 00:08:26.33\00:08:27.90 And from a cultural understanding 00:08:27.94\00:08:29.27 and biblical familiarity and those sorts of things. 00:08:29.30\00:08:31.81 This is a huge life change now 00:08:31.84\00:08:34.71 and we have to approach it with caution, 00:08:34.74\00:08:39.21 not so much caution as careful intentionality 00:08:39.25\00:08:42.65 and not too fast. 00:08:42.68\00:08:44.02 Right. 00:08:44.05\00:08:45.39 So we're talking to huge change 00:08:45.42\00:08:46.76 for the people that are involved. 00:08:46.79\00:08:48.12 So when you use the word tent making, 00:08:48.16\00:08:49.49 you are talking about these young people coming, 00:08:49.52\00:08:51.43 finding their own work, their own jobs, 00:08:51.46\00:08:54.26 but they come with a larger intent 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.16 and that is to help build a community of faith. 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.03 You know, it's fascinating, 00:08:59.07\00:09:01.27 we recruit and we talk to people 00:09:01.30\00:09:03.07 and say, okay, 00:09:03.10\00:09:04.44 we have a horrible offer for you. 00:09:04.47\00:09:06.17 You pay your own way here, 00:09:06.21\00:09:07.54 you find your own job, there's no real security. 00:09:07.58\00:09:10.01 We train you, you work really hard 00:09:10.05\00:09:11.55 at your own job, 00:09:11.58\00:09:12.91 you work really hard at your mission 00:09:12.95\00:09:14.55 and there's gonna be a high failure rate 00:09:14.58\00:09:16.95 and a lot of people that you think 00:09:16.99\00:09:18.45 you're bringing to Christ, it's gonna be heartbreaking 00:09:18.49\00:09:20.46 but in the end you'll probably build a church. 00:09:20.49\00:09:23.29 That's our offer, what do you think? 00:09:23.32\00:09:26.06 And a surprising number of people 00:09:26.09\00:09:27.66 say yes because, 00:09:27.70\00:09:29.23 then they only say because God calls them. 00:09:29.26\00:09:31.50 Right. 00:09:31.53\00:09:32.87 Well that's a blessing. Amen. 00:09:32.90\00:09:34.37 Now another innovative thing that's happening here 00:09:34.40\00:09:37.21 is you're looking for a digital pastor. 00:09:37.24\00:09:39.74 What's it all about? 00:09:39.77\00:09:41.21 Well, that's part of a strategy. 00:09:41.24\00:09:43.51 Now, let's just, let's just... 00:09:43.55\00:09:48.12 Let's just admit that our church planting strategy 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.69 with tent makers is an experiment. 00:09:51.72\00:09:56.29 So now we have an experiment within that experiment, 00:09:56.32\00:10:00.50 where we are recruiting 00:10:00.53\00:10:03.70 a digital pastor and having them. 00:10:03.73\00:10:08.97 Sorry, what is a digital pastor? 00:10:09.00\00:10:10.51 A digital pastor is someone who forms an internet church. 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.44 Okay. 00:10:13.48\00:10:14.81 So, here the members of a church 00:10:14.84\00:10:17.31 of a digital pastor would be someone 00:10:17.35\00:10:19.15 who goes their YouTube site, 00:10:19.18\00:10:21.32 at least once a month and gains spiritual knowledge 00:10:21.35\00:10:25.02 and strength and a beginning, 00:10:25.05\00:10:27.16 a beginning relationship with Christ from that site. 00:10:27.19\00:10:30.09 So, you know the pastor in most cases 00:10:30.13\00:10:33.09 wouldn't even meet his or her members. 00:10:33.13\00:10:36.97 Well, a digital church could have members 00:10:37.00\00:10:40.17 from all over the world. 00:10:40.20\00:10:42.04 So we're recruiting right now and we think we're talking to 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.67 some amazing people 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.88 and we're saying okay, come here, 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.48 same deal, we can hardly pay you anything, 00:10:48.51\00:10:50.98 you're gonna work really hard, 00:10:51.01\00:10:53.25 but we want you to build a digital church, 00:10:53.28\00:10:56.02 have thousands of members all over the world, 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.49 and we want to invest in trying to have 00:10:58.52\00:11:02.06 as many of your members as possible 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.76 from Northern New England. 00:11:03.79\00:11:05.79 And then we want you to hold meetups. 00:11:05.83\00:11:08.76 We want you to go around places in Northern New England, 00:11:08.80\00:11:12.77 and we want you to invite your members 00:11:12.80\00:11:16.44 to meet you face to face. 00:11:16.47\00:11:18.01 And when you go to various places, 00:11:18.04\00:11:19.77 we want you to meet those, 00:11:19.81\00:11:21.58 meet your members with our church planting teams. 00:11:21.61\00:11:25.48 We want to try and transition digital members 00:11:25.51\00:11:29.55 into a physical, spiritual seeking community. 00:11:29.58\00:11:33.15 That's nice. 00:11:33.19\00:11:34.52 And have a pipe way, 00:11:34.56\00:11:35.96 so people who go on the internet, 00:11:35.99\00:11:38.23 out of curiosity, then end up, some of them, 00:11:38.26\00:11:41.60 a few of them in actual fellowship 00:11:41.63\00:11:44.60 and eventually actual church members 00:11:44.63\00:11:47.64 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.10 proclaiming the soon coming of Christ. 00:11:49.14\00:11:51.27 Fantastic. 00:11:51.31\00:11:52.81 I wish we had more time to talk about this, 00:11:52.84\00:11:54.61 but God bless you in what you're doing. 00:11:54.64\00:11:56.18 Thank you, Gary, I appreciate it. 00:11:56.21\00:11:57.55 Our viewers at home, pray for the mission field 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.81 that is the Northern New England Conference. 00:11:59.85\00:12:01.68 God has given tremendous ideas, creative thoughts 00:12:01.72\00:12:05.52 and it looks like He's also providing people 00:12:05.55\00:12:08.22 to meet these needs. 00:12:08.26\00:12:10.03 Please pray for them this will develop that 00:12:10.06\00:12:11.79 the Kingdom of God will be expanded 00:12:11.83\00:12:13.46 in these territories. 00:12:13.50\00:12:14.83 We'll be right back after this break. 00:12:14.86\00:12:16.67
