Welcome back to Guatemala. 00:00:09.97\00:00:11.74 And behind me you can see 00:00:11.77\00:00:13.11 the Antigua Guatemala Cathedral. 00:00:13.14\00:00:15.78 Next up, we'll hear the story of Pastor Lynn Barnard, 00:00:15.81\00:00:18.91 a childhood hero of mine, 00:00:18.95\00:00:20.85 who was a pioneer medical missionary 00:00:20.88\00:00:23.02 in Papua New Guinea. 00:00:23.05\00:00:25.05 Our guest today is Dr. Barry Oliver 00:00:25.09\00:00:27.06 from the South Pacific Division. 00:00:27.09\00:00:28.59 In fact, he was the division president 00:00:28.62\00:00:30.69 there for eight years. 00:00:30.73\00:00:32.53 Dr. Oliver, welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:32.56\00:00:34.53 Thank you Laurie, it's nice to be with you. 00:00:34.56\00:00:36.90 Today you're going to tell us a story 00:00:36.93\00:00:38.40 about a missionary who served for many years 00:00:38.43\00:00:40.34 in your division, Pastor Len Barnard? 00:00:40.37\00:00:42.54 Yes I am. 00:00:42.57\00:00:43.91 I actually knew Pastor Bernard personally. 00:00:43.94\00:00:47.48 He is one of the real characters 00:00:47.51\00:00:52.11 of our division. 00:00:52.15\00:00:54.38 He was a New Zealander originally, 00:00:54.42\00:00:56.75 and he joined up with the armed forces 00:00:56.79\00:00:59.95 during World War II. 00:00:59.99\00:01:01.32 He was a medic in Papua New Guinea. 00:01:01.36\00:01:03.83 And I guess it was while he was a medic 00:01:03.86\00:01:05.53 that he got a real feel for the country, 00:01:05.56\00:01:07.63 especially for the people. 00:01:07.66\00:01:09.96 He used to see the planes in operation 00:01:10.00\00:01:13.84 while he was there as a medic during the war. 00:01:13.87\00:01:16.84 And when he finished his time in the services, 00:01:16.87\00:01:19.87 he went back to New Zealand, 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.88 and he trained to be a pilot. 00:01:21.91\00:01:23.58 He had this burning in his bones. 00:01:23.61\00:01:26.82 He returned to New Guinea after the war, not as a pilot, 00:01:26.85\00:01:30.35 although he was trained, 00:01:30.39\00:01:32.02 and he worked for just a short time 00:01:32.05\00:01:35.32 in the government office. 00:01:35.36\00:01:38.59 But it wasn't long before he expressed his interest 00:01:38.63\00:01:42.26 to being employed by the church 00:01:42.30\00:01:44.17 because he even then wanted to see 00:01:44.20\00:01:46.67 the church utilizing planes. 00:01:46.70\00:01:50.41 But he was also trained as a medic. 00:01:50.44\00:01:53.07 And so he went very early to one of our Hansenide 00:01:53.11\00:01:57.15 or leper colonies up near Mount Hagen. 00:01:57.18\00:02:01.48 And for a number of years he and his family worked there 00:02:01.52\00:02:05.15 at the Mount Hagen Hansenide colony 00:02:05.19\00:02:08.09 or Togoba Hospital as it's known. 00:02:08.12\00:02:11.03 And while there they experienced 00:02:11.06\00:02:14.00 the highs and the lows I guess of mission service. 00:02:14.03\00:02:17.57 So it's not easy working with people 00:02:17.60\00:02:19.10 who have a terribly debilitating disease. 00:02:19.13\00:02:22.77 They moved around a little. 00:02:22.80\00:02:24.94 Well, more than a little, 00:02:24.97\00:02:26.31 they went to quite a few places in their service. 00:02:26.34\00:02:30.95 All the time, Len saw these planes 00:02:30.98\00:02:34.05 flying overhead, and he said, 00:02:34.08\00:02:36.55 "We've got to have one of those planes. 00:02:36.58\00:02:38.62 He had experiences such as walking into 00:02:38.65\00:02:42.96 the Karamui cannibal country in the highlands of New Guinea. 00:02:42.99\00:02:47.03 It took him 48 days, I kid you not 48 days of hard, 00:02:47.06\00:02:52.50 hard walking, to get from his base of operations 00:02:52.53\00:02:56.50 into to where the people... 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.34 Seeing the planes operating. 00:02:58.37\00:03:00.18 And he would see the planes 00:03:00.21\00:03:01.64 of some of the other missions going over head. 00:03:01.68\00:03:04.21 So the church had no planes at all at that point? 00:03:04.25\00:03:06.31 We are pre 1964. 00:03:06.35\00:03:08.28 This is the 50s. This is a 60s. 00:03:08.32\00:03:11.75 I don't think we actually had planes 00:03:11.79\00:03:13.42 anywhere in the world at that time. 00:03:13.46\00:03:16.93 The earliest planes that we had 00:03:16.96\00:03:18.53 were both the experiences I'm telling you about. 00:03:18.56\00:03:21.03 And I think in South America also, 00:03:21.06\00:03:23.13 someone will probably prove me wrong. 00:03:23.16\00:03:25.73 But Len saw these planes 00:03:25.77\00:03:28.77 and he went to the Union Mission leaders 00:03:28.80\00:03:33.61 and made a case. 00:03:33.64\00:03:35.78 And they providentially thought it was a very good idea. 00:03:35.81\00:03:39.28 And so, after negotiations, 00:03:39.31\00:03:43.18 a plane was accessed and Pastor Len Barnard 00:03:43.22\00:03:48.76 traveled down to Sydney, Australia, 00:03:48.79\00:03:51.09 where the plane was dedicated. 00:03:51.13\00:03:53.29 And I think I've got this right, 00:03:53.33\00:03:54.66 June 27, 1964, 00:03:54.70\00:03:57.50 the division president dedicated the plane. 00:03:57.53\00:03:59.97 Len was there and then he flew the plane 00:04:00.00\00:04:02.74 back to the highlands of Papua New Guinea. 00:04:02.77\00:04:05.97 And I remember reading, 00:04:06.01\00:04:07.34 he was telling the story as he was coming across 00:04:07.38\00:04:10.78 the Gulf of Papua 00:04:10.81\00:04:13.85 and beginning to go up into the, 00:04:13.88\00:04:16.58 to the highlands which 12, 14, 16,000 00:04:16.62\00:04:20.76 feet above sea level. 00:04:20.79\00:04:22.22 There was a huge bank of clouds 00:04:22.26\00:04:24.66 is that just about always is up there. 00:04:24.69\00:04:26.96 And he wondered how in the world 00:04:27.00\00:04:28.43 he was going to get this little, little Cessna, 00:04:28.46\00:04:30.40 180 Cessna into the Kopiago airstrip. 00:04:30.43\00:04:34.90 Providentially again, the clouds opened, 00:04:34.94\00:04:37.44 and he was able to, to go right through, 00:04:37.47\00:04:40.11 and I remember him telling many stories 00:04:40.14\00:04:41.78 time and time again of how the clouds just opened. 00:04:41.81\00:04:44.25 And these little planes were able to get through 00:04:44.28\00:04:46.35 and he used to tell stories 00:04:46.38\00:04:48.35 about the three angels flying on the wings 00:04:48.38\00:04:50.25 of the plane. 00:04:50.29\00:04:51.62 This was quite something, he had that story. 00:04:51.65\00:04:54.82 So the plane is dedicated 00:04:54.86\00:04:56.79 and began operations on June 30, 1964 00:04:56.83\00:05:01.40 and all of a sudden, the mission work opened up, 00:05:01.43\00:05:05.63 Len was able to operate the plane. 00:05:05.67\00:05:07.70 He had a good friend and colleague, 00:05:07.74\00:05:09.54 Pastor Colin Winch, who at the time 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.44 was living down the coast of Madang, 00:05:11.47\00:05:13.54 and together, they pioneered Adventist Aviation 00:05:13.58\00:05:16.81 in Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific Division 00:05:16.85\00:05:19.15 and pretty much in the world apart 00:05:19.18\00:05:22.25 from probably some others, well, who I'm sure 00:05:22.28\00:05:24.52 their stories will be also told. 00:05:24.55\00:05:26.72 Len and Colin flew the plane, 00:05:26.76\00:05:31.16 delivered medical supplies, 00:05:31.19\00:05:33.66 took evangelistic opportunities 00:05:33.70\00:05:36.60 and really opened to begin to open up, 00:05:36.63\00:05:38.73 of course, there weren't all that 00:05:38.77\00:05:40.10 many airstrips at that time 00:05:40.14\00:05:41.54 and so gradually airstrips were being built. 00:05:41.57\00:05:44.01 And they would fly into very remote places 00:05:44.04\00:05:46.71 in the highlands on the coast of that country. 00:05:46.74\00:05:50.75 Two years after the operation started, 00:05:50.78\00:05:54.68 there was almost a tragic accident. 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.75 Well, it was an accident, it was almost tragic. 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.06 Len was trying to test 00:06:00.09\00:06:02.82 the compression of the compeller 00:06:02.86\00:06:04.66 rather get the propeller. 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.90 And as he was turning it, suddenly it gave way 00:06:06.93\00:06:10.03 and it's pretty much sliced his leg. 00:06:10.07\00:06:12.43 It was almost literally hanging by a piece of skin, his leg. 00:06:12.47\00:06:18.07 Right through the bone and everything. 00:06:18.11\00:06:19.44 What was that? 00:06:19.47\00:06:20.81 Right through the bone, everything 00:06:20.84\00:06:22.61 and they said he will never walk again. 00:06:22.64\00:06:24.55 How we're going to take it off. 00:06:24.58\00:06:26.15 But again, providentially after, 00:06:26.18\00:06:30.75 I think it was eight months, he was able to walk again. 00:06:30.79\00:06:34.16 And before long, 00:06:34.19\00:06:35.52 he was back in Papua New Guinea, 00:06:35.56\00:06:36.96 flying the planes once again. 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.86 So tremendous commitment. 00:06:38.89\00:06:42.16 This is a story of great commitment, 00:06:42.20\00:06:45.13 of great vision. 00:06:45.17\00:06:48.57 He was just an ordinary guy... 00:06:48.60\00:06:50.27 He doesn't sound like it. 00:06:50.31\00:06:51.64 But he was something, he was an incredible person 00:06:51.67\00:06:54.34 and so were all the others, you know. 00:06:54.38\00:06:56.01 The story of Adventist Aviation in Papua New Guinea 00:06:56.04\00:06:58.15 is we've had about 66 pilots, 30 engineers 00:06:58.18\00:07:02.88 just in that country, then the Solomon Islands, 00:07:02.92\00:07:05.69 and Len was instrumental 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.52 in founding Adventist Aviation in Australia 00:07:07.56\00:07:09.76 where people would go out 00:07:09.79\00:07:11.13 into the outback to remote places. 00:07:11.16\00:07:12.83 Just an incredible story of Adventist mission. 00:07:12.86\00:07:15.13 You know, we have so much in our history... 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.60 Yeah, we do. 00:07:18.63\00:07:19.97 That often we don't realize, 00:07:20.00\00:07:21.34 but he's rich and he is really inspirational. 00:07:21.37\00:07:24.04 I take my head off too Pastor Len Barnard. 00:07:24.07\00:07:26.14 He is a man I wish I could have met. 00:07:26.17\00:07:28.21 Thank you, Dr. Oliver, for sharing his story. 00:07:28.24\00:07:31.21 It's my pleasure, Laurie. 00:07:31.25\00:07:32.95 I'm Laurie Falvo for Mission 360 TV. 00:07:32.98\00:07:36.58 Next up, we traveled to Uruguay 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.65 to see how your 13th Sabbath offerings 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.32 have helped plant a church there. 00:07:41.36\00:07:43.29 We are planting new churches in strategic locations. 00:07:50.13\00:07:53.77 In places we haven't worked for years. 00:07:53.80\00:07:56.44 Many people here thought it was impossible 00:07:56.47\00:07:58.81 to start new groups of believers. 00:07:58.84\00:08:01.34 But people like Nestor 00:08:01.38\00:08:03.01 are demonstrating that this is possible. 00:08:03.04\00:08:05.85 Nestor is a former businessman 00:08:05.88\00:08:07.78 and retired taxi driver in Montevideo, Uruguay. 00:08:07.82\00:08:11.75 He is also a talented guitar player 00:08:11.79\00:08:13.72 who used his gifts 00:08:13.76\00:08:15.09 to do something difficult in the city, 00:08:15.12\00:08:17.03 Nestor decided to plant a new Adventist Church here. 00:08:17.06\00:08:20.66 Up until recently, 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.13 there were few Adventist congregations in Montevideo. 00:08:22.16\00:08:24.93 Certain parts of the city 00:08:24.97\00:08:26.30 were completely untouched by the Adventist message. 00:08:26.33\00:08:29.54 It seemed impossible 00:08:29.57\00:08:30.91 to reach people in this highly secular society 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.34 with little interest in religion. 00:08:33.38\00:08:35.31 But it was here that 00:08:35.34\00:08:36.68 the Adventist Church of Goes started. 00:08:36.71\00:08:39.51 Nestor and the other missionaries 00:08:39.55\00:08:40.88 working with him 00:08:40.92\00:08:42.25 wanted to use Christ method to reach the community. 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.79 So they mingled with the people and met their needs 00:08:44.82\00:08:47.72 by starting an urban center of influence. 00:08:47.76\00:08:52.06 We had a lot to offer the community, 00:08:52.09\00:08:53.93 the smoking cessation courses, 00:08:53.96\00:08:56.00 healthy cooking classes, guitar lessons 00:08:56.03\00:08:58.70 and spiritual counseling. 00:08:58.73\00:09:00.54 We served food to the homeless, 00:09:00.57\00:09:02.67 we offered them Guiso, a traditional dish in Uruguay 00:09:02.70\00:09:05.91 made of lentils and rice. 00:09:05.94\00:09:07.94 We invited them to spiritual activities too. 00:09:07.98\00:09:10.55 And we saw that God led and brought people to us. 00:09:10.58\00:09:16.25 Many people who were reached 00:09:16.28\00:09:17.62 by the missionaries began to study the Bible, 00:09:17.65\00:09:19.89 and in just the first year 00:09:19.92\00:09:21.26 of activities of the Goes church plant, 00:09:21.29\00:09:23.56 five people were baptized. 00:09:23.59\00:09:25.73 The number of visitors kept growing 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.56 and the newly formed congregation 00:09:27.60\00:09:29.16 started to pray for a bigger building. 00:09:29.20\00:09:32.13 In 2016, God answered their prayers 00:09:32.17\00:09:34.94 through your contribution to the 13th Sabbath offering. 00:09:34.97\00:09:38.67 Adventist members 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.04 around the world supported this project 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.28 and a building was purchased 00:09:42.31\00:09:43.65 in a busy street between many shops. 00:09:43.68\00:09:46.15 Since then, the Church of Goes 00:09:46.18\00:09:48.18 has met in a large hall. 00:09:48.22\00:09:49.88 Approximately 40 people attend Sabbath worships 00:09:49.92\00:09:52.85 and welcome visitors from the surrounding region. 00:09:52.89\00:09:58.39 Goes is practically a family. 00:09:58.43\00:10:00.56 I always feel welcome in this church. 00:10:00.60\00:10:03.26 Here I learned the true faith. 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.27 I learned who the true Jesus is, 00:10:05.30\00:10:07.44 and the true Church of God. 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.44 Because of this, 00:10:09.47\00:10:10.81 I felt confident to become an Adventist, 00:10:10.84\00:10:13.27 and follow the commandments as Jesus asked us. 00:10:13.31\00:10:18.68 The world moves very fast. 00:10:18.71\00:10:21.02 There's time for nothing. 00:10:21.05\00:10:22.82 And when you find a place, 00:10:22.85\00:10:24.79 a refuge like this house of God, 00:10:24.82\00:10:27.76 the people feel good and feel satisfied, 00:10:27.79\00:10:31.09 and decide to take part. 00:10:31.13\00:10:35.86 Through the new Church of Goes, 00:10:35.90\00:10:37.43 God is blessing the city of Montevideo. 00:10:37.47\00:10:40.00 Nestor is thrilled to see this congregation growing, 00:10:40.04\00:10:42.94 but there are other areas of the city 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.64 that need to be reached. 00:10:44.67\00:10:46.27 So Nestor and the local leadership 00:10:46.31\00:10:48.24 have planned a church plant in the La Guate neighborhood 00:10:48.28\00:10:51.48 where more than 200,000 people live. 00:10:51.51\00:10:56.32 God wants us to open new paths and conquer new lands. 00:10:56.35\00:11:02.32 Just as the heroes of our faith in the past, 00:11:02.36\00:11:06.53 we must continue to conquer because time is short. 00:11:06.56\00:11:10.43 And Jesus is soon returning. 00:11:10.47\00:11:15.04 The challenge is similar around the world 00:11:15.07\00:11:17.51 until every member becomes involved in mission, 00:11:17.54\00:11:20.38 the world may remain largely unreached. 00:11:20.41\00:11:22.88 Please pray for more people to allow God to use them 00:11:22.91\00:11:25.88 like Nestor did. 00:11:25.91\00:11:27.25 Pray also for the millions of people 00:11:27.28\00:11:29.08 living in the cities 00:11:29.12\00:11:30.45 that they may desire to know Christ, 00:11:30.49\00:11:32.65 and thanks for your support of the 13th Sabbath offering. 00:11:32.69\00:11:36.42 Well, thanks so much for joining us 00:11:51.81\00:11:53.31 on today's program. 00:11:53.34\00:11:54.94 And I hope that you've enjoyed our 360 degree 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.55 view of mission around the world. 00:11:57.58\00:12:00.12 We've been to Thailand, we've been to Uruguay, 00:12:00.15\00:12:02.42 we've been to here in Guatemala. 00:12:02.45\00:12:04.82 And as you can see cultures change, 00:12:04.85\00:12:06.89 people's change, but the needs remain the same 00:12:06.92\00:12:10.39 and people need to know the good news about Jesus. 00:12:10.43\00:12:12.53 And I want to thank you for everything that you do 00:12:12.56\00:12:15.40 to make Adventist Mission possible. 00:12:15.43\00:12:17.10 I want to
