Music and mission in Thailand, 00:00:09.94\00:00:11.87 a lay person plants a church in Uruguay 00:00:11.91\00:00:14.94 and mission here in Guatemala, 00:00:14.98\00:00:16.85 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:16.88\00:00:19.15 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:53.62\00:00:55.78 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:55.82\00:00:57.22 Today's program is coming to you 00:00:57.25\00:00:58.62 from Central America from the country of Guatemala. 00:00:58.65\00:01:02.06 This is a beautiful country. 00:01:02.09\00:01:03.59 It's a country of volcanoes 00:01:03.63\00:01:05.63 and rainforests and ancient Mayan ruins. 00:01:05.66\00:01:08.96 In fact, that half of the population 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.83 can trace their ancestry back to the Mayan civilization. 00:01:10.87\00:01:15.40 Today, here in Guatemala, 00:01:15.44\00:01:17.21 the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:01:17.24\00:01:18.84 has been growing rapidly, 00:01:18.87\00:01:20.68 but it still faces many mission challenges, 00:01:20.71\00:01:22.98 and we'll be learning more about that on today's program, 00:01:23.01\00:01:26.01 but first up, let's travel to Thailand 00:01:26.05\00:01:28.52 to learn about the power of music in mission. 00:01:28.55\00:01:31.35 Music is one of the most popular forms 00:01:36.59\00:01:38.89 of entertainment, but in Thailand, 00:01:38.93\00:01:41.00 it's doing more than just entertain. 00:01:41.03\00:01:43.20 It's bringing people 00:01:43.23\00:01:44.57 from all over the world together 00:01:44.60\00:01:46.20 for a common purpose. 00:01:46.23\00:01:50.84 Khon Kaen City lies 450 kilometers from Bangkok. 00:01:50.87\00:01:55.28 It's Thailand's fourth largest city 00:01:55.31\00:01:57.48 and has the largest university in Northeastern Thailand. 00:01:57.51\00:02:01.35 Khon Kaen is a, you know, it's a growing city. 00:02:01.38\00:02:04.65 There's a lot of educated people here, 00:02:04.69\00:02:06.29 a lot of wealth, 00:02:06.32\00:02:07.66 people are busy, don't have a lot of time. 00:02:07.69\00:02:10.03 So we had to think in terms of 00:02:10.06\00:02:11.59 how can we meet people in a non-threatening way. 00:02:11.63\00:02:15.23 With the challenge of reaching out 00:02:15.26\00:02:16.60 to this wealthy, urban community, 00:02:16.63\00:02:18.57 missionaries from all over the world 00:02:18.60\00:02:20.47 were called to Thailand. 00:02:20.50\00:02:22.07 Ricardo and his family were one of the first 00:02:22.10\00:02:24.37 to answer the call to Thailand 00:02:24.41\00:02:26.01 through Adventist Frontier Missions. 00:02:26.04\00:02:28.74 Ricardo became the leader of a violin group 00:02:28.78\00:02:30.98 at the Adventist Church in Bangkok. 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.01 The group was given the opportunity to perform live 00:02:33.05\00:02:35.62 in the Thai parliament 00:02:35.65\00:02:37.02 and in several big shopping malls 00:02:37.05\00:02:38.59 in the city. 00:02:38.62\00:02:39.95 People enjoyed their music and said it made them happy. 00:02:39.99\00:02:42.66 Ricardo realized that they could use music 00:02:42.69\00:02:44.99 to communicate with and touch people, 00:02:45.03\00:02:47.16 regardless of their status in life. 00:02:47.20\00:02:50.33 Music is like a universal language 00:02:50.37\00:02:53.37 that really connects with people. 00:02:53.40\00:02:55.70 People's hearts open up with music and music 00:02:55.74\00:02:58.24 is such a central part of 00:02:58.27\00:03:00.98 Christian worship and experience. 00:03:01.01\00:03:03.65 Soon enough they started a music academy. 00:03:03.68\00:03:06.31 They invited volunteer teachers 00:03:06.35\00:03:07.98 from around the world to come and teach piano, 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.69 violin, ukulele, guitar, and give voice lessons. 00:03:10.72\00:03:15.02 These teachers, together with the leaders of the school, 00:03:15.06\00:03:18.13 have been able to create meaningful relationships 00:03:18.16\00:03:21.06 with their students and their families. 00:03:21.10\00:03:23.63 We have a lot of wealthy clients 00:03:23.67\00:03:26.94 and students that come here 00:03:26.97\00:03:28.40 and their parents are speaking to us 00:03:28.44\00:03:30.97 more and more about the joy 00:03:31.01\00:03:33.78 and the peace that they see in our families 00:03:33.81\00:03:36.01 and in our lives that they want for their children. 00:03:36.04\00:03:40.08 While the teachers play a significant role 00:03:40.12\00:03:42.22 in helping transform the lives 00:03:42.25\00:03:43.89 of their young proteges, they themselves 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.42 also go through a life-changing experience. 00:03:46.45\00:03:49.42 It gives them a chance to be involved in ministry. 00:03:49.46\00:03:51.99 It shows them that 00:03:52.03\00:03:53.36 they can use their unique gifts, 00:03:53.40\00:03:56.06 you know, to further God's cause. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.07 And so, coming here, you know, 00:03:58.10\00:04:00.34 learning Thai language to some degree, 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.77 experiencing the culture, and just getting exposed 00:04:03.81\00:04:06.98 to a broader vision, you know, 00:04:07.01\00:04:09.84 can plant a seed that will help direct their future 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.88 and give them an idea that, you know, 00:04:13.92\00:04:15.85 they can use their gifts to build up God's Kingdom. 00:04:15.88\00:04:20.16 In some ways, I and this school is the only way that 00:04:20.19\00:04:25.79 they would be able to hear about Jesus, 00:04:25.83\00:04:28.83 and the only way that 00:04:28.86\00:04:30.20 they would be able to experience 00:04:30.23\00:04:31.63 the love of Jesus. 00:04:31.67\00:04:33.13 So when I realize that 00:04:33.17\00:04:36.54 my students need to know Jesus, 00:04:36.57\00:04:39.81 and when I desire so badly for them to know the joy 00:04:39.84\00:04:44.75 and the peace that He has given me, 00:04:44.78\00:04:48.15 that channels into my lessons, 00:04:48.18\00:04:51.42 and it channels into the way I teach them, 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.42 and it gives me a desire to encourage my students, 00:04:54.46\00:05:00.23 and to be patient with them. 00:05:00.26\00:05:03.30 Global Mission is helping fund the music program 00:05:03.33\00:05:06.07 where people in Khon Kaen can learn music, 00:05:06.10\00:05:08.54 not only as a form of entertainment, 00:05:08.57\00:05:10.74 but as a means to building relationships 00:05:10.77\00:05:13.17 and changing lives. 00:05:13.21\00:05:14.78 They need friendship and they need hope 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.41 and they need meaning and purpose, you know, 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.45 as they realize that the things 00:05:19.48\00:05:21.52 that they have are not giving them 00:05:21.55\00:05:24.09 what they hoped, you know, 00:05:24.12\00:05:25.65 the happiness, the lasting happiness. 00:05:25.69\00:05:27.72 Music is a love gift from God to us, 00:05:27.76\00:05:30.53 and the music academy in Khon Kaen 00:05:30.56\00:05:32.59 uses both the beauty of music 00:05:32.63\00:05:34.23 and the harmonious love of Jesus 00:05:34.26\00:05:36.46 to touch the lives of their students, 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.10 their families, and soon, with your prayers, 00:05:39.13\00:05:41.94 the whole city of Khon Kaen. 00:05:41.97\00:05:44.27 Thank you for your support of Global Mission 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.98 that supports projects like this. 00:05:47.01\00:05:51.55 My guest is Dr. Erick who is the Director 00:05:51.58\00:05:53.85 of the Isaiah 58 Mission here in Guatemala City 00:05:53.88\00:05:57.92 and in the background, you can hear a worship program 00:05:57.95\00:06:01.36 that's going on right now 00:06:01.39\00:06:02.72 for the people who come to this center. 00:06:02.76\00:06:04.69 Dr. Erick, can you please describe 00:06:04.73\00:06:06.49 how this center started? 00:06:06.53\00:06:08.26 Why and what happens here? 00:06:08.30\00:06:10.77 We started about two and a half years ago. 00:06:14.47\00:06:17.44 We began by offering bread, warm beverages, cereal, 00:06:17.47\00:06:21.88 and some juice to people who live off the streets. 00:06:21.91\00:06:25.58 These are people who found refuge 00:06:25.61\00:06:27.45 under covered areas or nearby hospitals, 00:06:27.48\00:06:31.02 but then we moved on to a park, 00:06:31.05\00:06:33.76 where we met every Sunday and many people came to us. 00:06:33.79\00:06:38.33 We served them lunch and spoke to them about God. 00:06:38.36\00:06:42.83 We soon realized that winter was approaching. 00:06:42.86\00:06:46.23 And we decided that 00:06:46.27\00:06:47.60 we had to find a house to use as a base of operations. 00:06:47.64\00:06:52.87 So we began to pray to pray for this project 00:06:52.91\00:06:56.48 because renting a house means we would have to raise money. 00:06:56.51\00:07:01.18 It was then we found this house, 00:07:01.22\00:07:03.32 which is affordable enough, 00:07:03.35\00:07:04.92 when you consider rental costs here in Guatemala. 00:07:04.95\00:07:09.32 So we began to assist people here, 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.69 not only on Sundays 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.06 but on Sabbath and during the week as well. 00:07:13.09\00:07:16.16 And this is how we operate now. 00:07:16.20\00:07:17.67 Wonderful. 00:07:25.57\00:07:26.91 Now can you please describe for our viewers, 00:07:26.94\00:07:29.04 what happens here? 00:07:29.08\00:07:30.75 Okay. 00:07:30.78\00:07:33.55 We open on Mondays and Wednesdays for people 00:07:33.58\00:07:36.45 to come and wash their clothes. 00:07:36.48\00:07:38.65 There's also rooms for them to shower, 00:07:38.69\00:07:41.69 and then we invite them to listen to the Word of God. 00:07:41.72\00:07:45.09 After a short Bible study 00:07:45.13\00:07:46.80 and some singing, we offer them supper. 00:07:46.83\00:07:49.93 We always prepare a healthy meal. 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.60 And on Sabbath this house is used as a church. 00:07:52.63\00:07:56.00 We studied the Sabbath School lesson, 00:07:56.04\00:07:57.94 we sing, and we pray, 00:07:57.97\00:08:00.08 and a special sermon is presented 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.38 because more people are attending on Sabbath 00:08:02.41\00:08:05.11 than any of the days during the week. 00:08:05.15\00:08:09.22 This is basically what we do here. 00:08:09.25\00:08:12.79 We offer the services because the people asked us 00:08:12.82\00:08:15.92 for the possibility to take a shower, 00:08:15.96\00:08:17.93 to wash their clothes, 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.69 and for a place to change their clothes. 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.86 We also give them clothes 00:08:26.10\00:08:27.57 and shoes that we get as donations. 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.61 And we also supply items 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.34 for their hygiene as toothbrushes or bath soap. 00:08:32.37\00:08:38.35 And you know, they're very happy 00:08:38.38\00:08:40.22 and grateful for this program. 00:08:40.25\00:08:44.69 That's beautiful. 00:08:44.72\00:08:46.05 Now, Doctor, why are you 00:08:46.09\00:08:47.42 personally involved in this ministry? 00:08:47.46\00:08:52.06 Well, for now, 00:08:52.09\00:08:53.90 I'm the president of the program. 00:08:53.93\00:08:56.36 We meet every week on Tuesday evening, 00:08:56.40\00:08:59.03 and we talked about all the facets 00:08:59.07\00:09:00.87 of the Isaiah 58 Program. 00:09:00.90\00:09:04.21 We often ask people for assistance. 00:09:04.24\00:09:06.78 For example, Lions International Club 00:09:06.81\00:09:10.51 operates here in Guatemala. 00:09:10.55\00:09:12.28 And they have given us many of the meals 00:09:12.31\00:09:14.62 and personal hygiene items 00:09:14.65\00:09:16.38 that we offer to the people who come here. 00:09:16.42\00:09:21.29 Our families also get involved. 00:09:21.32\00:09:23.36 We're five families working on this project. 00:09:23.39\00:09:26.96 The Zone 15 Adventist Church 00:09:27.00\00:09:29.56 took notice of how well the program is working, 00:09:29.60\00:09:32.47 and how much it helps the people. 00:09:32.50\00:09:35.20 So they decided to help us to pay for rent. 00:09:35.24\00:09:38.81 The Zone 15 Adventist Church also pays for a person 00:09:38.84\00:09:42.98 to run the program by being here on a daily basis. 00:09:43.01\00:09:48.35 The Isaiah 58 Project was inspired by a person, 00:09:48.38\00:09:52.12 a missionary who came from Colombia. 00:09:52.15\00:09:56.16 He came to preach a sermon, and then told us that 00:09:56.19\00:09:59.09 they have an Isaiah 58 Project in his country. 00:09:59.13\00:10:03.16 As we listened, we thought we could do 00:10:03.20\00:10:05.30 the same here in Guatemala. 00:10:05.33\00:10:07.57 And the truth is that 00:10:07.60\00:10:08.94 the people who live in the streets 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.67 don't receive any help. 00:10:10.71\00:10:13.38 We have seen some churches 00:10:13.41\00:10:15.14 that distribute food on the street. 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.75 That is exactly what we did at first, 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.95 but we wanted to give them more, 00:10:20.98\00:10:24.12 more than just a piece of bread and juice. 00:10:24.15\00:10:26.89 We wanted to give them the Word of God, 00:10:26.92\00:10:29.92 that they might know God, 00:10:29.96\00:10:31.73 that they may experience the love of God. 00:10:31.76\00:10:35.43 That's why this group of families 00:10:35.46\00:10:37.53 joined together to start this project. 00:10:37.57\00:10:40.34 My motivation is to help people. 00:10:40.37\00:10:43.20 That's what we want to do. 00:10:43.24\00:10:47.98 Well, thank you for what you and your team are doing. 00:10:48.01\00:10:50.41 Doctor, can you tell me an experience of somebody 00:10:50.45\00:10:53.62 who has been ministered to through the center? 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.08 We have four people in critical conditions, 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.89 who overcame the problem of living on the streets, 00:11:02.92\00:11:06.09 a problem that is often 00:11:06.13\00:11:07.46 surrounded by a number of vices. 00:11:07.50\00:11:10.50 One of them, the first person was a long-time alcoholic, 00:11:10.53\00:11:14.94 he drink a lot of liquor, his eyes were yellow, 00:11:14.97\00:11:18.47 his liver was swollen, and his spleen was so large. 00:11:18.51\00:11:23.98 This person was about to die. 00:11:24.01\00:11:26.82 We decided to help him by providing him medicine, food, 00:11:26.85\00:11:31.39 and by helping him to understand that 00:11:31.42\00:11:33.86 he needed to make a serious change in his life 00:11:33.89\00:11:36.73 if he intends to live. 00:11:36.76\00:11:39.49 You know, that person changed. 00:11:39.53\00:11:42.00 That happened two years ago. 00:11:42.03\00:11:44.27 This person lives here now 00:11:44.30\00:11:46.00 and helps us by working in the house. 00:11:46.03\00:11:49.27 Another success story is about a person 00:11:49.30\00:11:51.81 who came here just to listen to the messages. 00:11:51.84\00:11:55.18 He now lives abroad outside of Guatemala. 00:11:55.21\00:11:58.41 About a month ago, 00:11:58.45\00:11:59.78 he told us that he's already rehabilitated. 00:11:59.81\00:12:03.02 He now wears a tie, a jacket,
