Putting kids first in the country of Andorra, 00:00:06.50\00:00:09.17 expanding a missionary school in Romania, 00:00:09.20\00:00:11.94 and a delicious recipe from the Mission 360 Kitchen, 00:00:11.97\00:00:14.88 all this and much more coming up next. 00:00:14.91\00:00:17.28 Hello and welcome to Mission 360. 00:00:51.81\00:00:53.68 I'm Gary Krause. 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.15 Today's program is coming to you from San Jose, 00:00:55.18\00:00:58.12 the capital and the largest city 00:00:58.15\00:01:00.46 in Costa Rica. 00:01:00.49\00:01:01.92 When you think of Costa Rica, 00:01:01.96\00:01:03.29 you may think of postcard beaches, 00:01:03.32\00:01:05.39 exotic wildlife, beautiful birds, jungles. 00:01:05.43\00:01:08.50 And if you'd think that you'd be correct, 00:01:08.53\00:01:10.40 because this is a place 00:01:10.43\00:01:11.77 that takes its nature seriously, 00:01:11.80\00:01:13.87 and tourists come from all over the world 00:01:13.90\00:01:16.00 to enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica. 00:01:16.04\00:01:18.41 On today's program, 00:01:18.44\00:01:19.77 we're going to be looking at mission right here 00:01:19.81\00:01:21.14 in this country. 00:01:21.18\00:01:22.51 But first up, let's travel to the country of Andorra, 00:01:22.54\00:01:25.31 which is sandwiched between Spain and France. 00:01:25.35\00:01:29.02 I have eight sons 00:01:37.46\00:01:39.06 who would soon have to enlist in the army 00:01:39.09\00:01:41.86 and face serious Sabbath challenges. 00:01:41.90\00:01:46.43 To protect my sons 00:01:46.47\00:01:48.74 I moved here as a literature evangelist. 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.57 Forty years ago, 00:01:54.64\00:01:56.08 Juan Amigo was sent to Andorra to work as a colporteur 00:01:56.11\00:01:59.25 and to plant 00:01:59.28\00:02:00.62 the first Adventist congregation 00:02:00.65\00:02:01.98 in the nation. 00:02:02.02\00:02:03.35 Andorra is a speck on the map, 00:02:03.39\00:02:05.05 sandwiched between France and Spain. 00:02:05.09\00:02:07.92 It lies in the valleys of a mountainous region 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.19 where millions of tourists come 00:02:10.23\00:02:11.99 for exciting sports activities every year. 00:02:12.03\00:02:14.10 This country 00:02:18.30\00:02:19.63 was one of the last un-entered territories 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.44 of the inter-European division. 00:02:21.47\00:02:23.71 At that time, 00:02:23.74\00:02:25.07 Juan and his family were the only Adventists 00:02:25.11\00:02:27.01 in the country. 00:02:27.04\00:02:28.38 Today, five of his sons remain in Andorra 00:02:28.41\00:02:30.81 and have leadership roles 00:02:30.85\00:02:32.51 in the only Adventist congregation there. 00:02:32.55\00:02:35.18 Our church is a bit different than other countries. 00:02:35.22\00:02:38.49 Actually, in Andorra there's no church registration, 00:02:38.52\00:02:41.82 so we cannot exist as a church. 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.16 So we created ourselves us an association. 00:02:44.19\00:02:47.23 And this is a way that we can operate 00:02:47.26\00:02:49.03 in this country. 00:02:49.06\00:02:51.73 We are a small group, 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.17 we have 25 members of whom 14 are children. 00:02:53.20\00:02:56.14 For several years 00:02:59.64\00:03:00.98 we did many evangelistic campaigns 00:03:01.01\00:03:02.71 without many results. 00:03:02.74\00:03:06.68 We decided to stop to pray until God showed us 00:03:06.72\00:03:09.45 where we should focus our efforts. 00:03:09.48\00:03:11.59 Now we are focusing our efforts on our children, 00:03:17.19\00:03:20.46 and our children's friends, and our friends too. 00:03:20.50\00:03:23.30 Putting kids first has reshaped the style 00:03:37.38\00:03:40.18 and flow of this church's worship. 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.35 On Friday evenings, 00:03:42.38\00:03:43.72 adult members meet at the church for vespers 00:03:43.75\00:03:46.15 and study the Sabbath School quarterly lesson 00:03:46.19\00:03:48.19 ahead of schedule. 00:03:48.22\00:03:49.76 This allows extra time for the kids 00:03:49.79\00:03:51.53 during regular Sabbath morning activities. 00:03:51.56\00:03:54.43 The study is a great way to enter the Sabbath day. 00:03:54.46\00:03:57.30 You know in church 00:03:57.33\00:03:58.67 we're not used to put kids first. 00:03:58.70\00:04:00.87 We don't give them a place in front, in the stage, 00:04:00.90\00:04:04.41 for example, 00:04:04.44\00:04:05.77 many times maybe only once a trimester, 00:04:05.81\00:04:08.28 so we started focusing to do activities 00:04:08.31\00:04:11.81 as the pathfinders for our church, 00:04:11.85\00:04:14.28 for our kids. 00:04:14.32\00:04:16.05 That's actually what every church does, 00:04:16.08\00:04:19.25 but we also created this place Saturday morning for them, 00:04:19.29\00:04:23.49 where they have kind of a sermon for kids, 00:04:23.53\00:04:25.89 they have some activity for kids 00:04:25.93\00:04:27.53 and also for the grownups, 00:04:27.56\00:04:28.90 so we can interact them 00:04:28.93\00:04:30.77 and ask and we can learn from the kids 00:04:30.80\00:04:32.73 and the kids can learn from us. 00:04:32.77\00:04:34.24 This week's teacher 00:04:41.48\00:04:42.81 presents a message from the Bible. 00:04:42.84\00:04:44.45 She brings visual illustrations 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.55 and a kid friendly sermon 00:04:46.58\00:04:47.92 that is also enjoyable for adults. 00:04:47.95\00:04:50.29 Afterward, the children break into classes 00:04:50.32\00:04:52.35 to study their quarterly lesson. 00:04:52.39\00:04:54.46 Then the adults enjoy a special message 00:04:54.49\00:04:56.79 in the main hall. 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.43 Once a month, 00:04:58.46\00:04:59.79 a delicious potluck is served 00:04:59.83\00:05:01.16 with a lot of international dishes 00:05:01.20\00:05:02.83 and flavors. 00:05:02.86\00:05:04.27 This is a great opportunity to grow relationships 00:05:04.30\00:05:07.44 and nourish the body. 00:05:07.47\00:05:09.40 The children of this church 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.77 are catered to in a special way. 00:05:10.81\00:05:12.91 They are put first 00:05:12.94\00:05:14.28 because this group wants them to take leadership 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.51 and ownership of church life. 00:05:16.54\00:05:19.21 They are the future of this congregation. 00:05:19.25\00:05:21.75 And through them 00:05:21.78\00:05:23.12 friends and parents are invited to many fun activities. 00:05:23.15\00:05:26.69 Please pray 00:05:26.72\00:05:28.06 for Adventist children around the world 00:05:28.09\00:05:29.96 who will lead God's Church in the coming days. 00:05:29.99\00:05:33.03 And thank you for your support of the mission offering 00:05:33.06\00:05:35.83 which helped start this church. 00:05:35.86\00:05:37.93 My guests are two church members 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.00 here in Costa Rica, 00:05:43.04\00:05:44.37 Toshiro and Kathia. 00:05:44.41\00:05:46.17 Thank you so much for joining us. 00:05:46.21\00:05:48.44 Toshiro, tell me, 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.28 how did you first become interested 00:05:50.31\00:05:52.08 in communicating to the deaf? 00:05:52.11\00:05:53.58 That's an interesting question. 00:05:56.58\00:05:58.55 Well, I began many years ago, 00:05:58.59\00:06:01.49 I was interested to know more deeply 00:06:01.52\00:06:03.29 the deaf culture. 00:06:03.32\00:06:05.29 I wondered how we could mix and mingle with them. 00:06:05.33\00:06:08.80 I knew that I wanted to learn sign language, 00:06:08.83\00:06:12.17 I found it rather interesting. 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.20 And I didn't know God's plan for me 00:06:14.24\00:06:16.00 but certainly, 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.37 I could use my hands in His service. 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.51 So I began to invest myself in learning to sign. 00:06:19.54\00:06:23.41 I learned to make contact with the deaf, 00:06:23.45\00:06:26.58 to get to know them better. 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.18 Now, I'm interested in mixing more with the deaf. 00:06:28.22\00:06:31.49 That's why I am interested in learning more 00:06:31.52\00:06:34.69 and developing my skills in sign language for the deaf. 00:06:34.72\00:06:37.63 Okay, now, Kathia, 00:06:40.96\00:06:42.93 you the first Seventh-day Adventist 00:06:42.96\00:06:47.30 deaf person in this country. 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.40 How did you first learn about Seventh-day Adventist? 00:06:49.44\00:06:52.71 Well, when I first came to the Adventist Church, 00:07:07.32\00:07:10.09 I didn't know anything about it. 00:07:10.13\00:07:11.96 Toshiro saw me there 00:07:11.99\00:07:13.53 that first time and invited me in. 00:07:13.56\00:07:16.46 I felt strange 00:07:16.50\00:07:17.87 coming into the Adventist Church. 00:07:17.90\00:07:19.67 That was my very first time. 00:07:19.70\00:07:21.37 The place was full of welcoming people 00:07:21.40\00:07:23.64 on this Sabbath 00:07:23.67\00:07:25.01 and I wondered and questioned 00:07:25.04\00:07:26.81 about meeting on Saturday. 00:07:26.84\00:07:28.28 Where did the Bible say anything about the Sabbath? 00:07:28.31\00:07:30.98 I had never seen that. 00:07:31.01\00:07:32.58 I visited the Adventists on four consecutive Sabbaths, 00:07:32.61\00:07:36.52 there I learned a lot and found answers. 00:07:36.55\00:07:39.69 Then I invited some other deaf to come to church with me. 00:07:39.72\00:07:45.49 So, Kathia, what are some of the ways 00:07:45.53\00:07:48.40 that you are sharing your faith? 00:07:48.43\00:07:49.96 Sometimes people from the deaf community 00:07:56.60\00:07:59.14 have never heard 00:07:59.17\00:08:00.51 about the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:08:00.54\00:08:02.14 so they visit the church, 00:08:02.18\00:08:03.61 and they arrive there 00:08:03.65\00:08:04.98 with lots of questions and curiosity. 00:08:05.01\00:08:07.15 I invite them in groups 00:08:07.18\00:08:08.55 and explain to them the scriptures 00:08:08.58\00:08:10.49 in how I understand them. 00:08:10.52\00:08:12.02 Sometimes, the deaf guests do not understand the text. 00:08:12.05\00:08:15.92 So I translated it into sign language, 00:08:15.96\00:08:18.09 and the teachings become clear. 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.30 Some of the concepts, they have never heard before. 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.77 But we grow together slowly, in our understanding. 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.77 Wonderful. 00:08:26.80\00:08:28.14 Toshiro, 00:08:28.17\00:08:30.01 what are some of the challenges that deaf people face 00:08:30.04\00:08:34.08 in becoming members of the church? 00:08:34.11\00:08:36.58 Well, the greatest challenge for the deaf community 00:08:39.85\00:08:43.15 is that they don't have interpreters. 00:08:43.18\00:08:47.02 There aren't interpreters in our churches 00:08:47.06\00:08:49.42 to translate the message into sign language. 00:08:49.46\00:08:53.60 I think 00:08:53.63\00:08:54.96 that the greatest obstacle for the deaf community 00:08:55.00\00:08:57.57 is the lack of translation 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.53 and interpretation in our churches. 00:08:59.57\00:09:03.00 They need people 00:09:03.04\00:09:04.37 who have the patience to explain the Bible to them. 00:09:04.41\00:09:08.84 The patience to introduce them to a new world of ideas, 00:09:08.88\00:09:13.08 that is found in the Word of God. 00:09:13.11\00:09:16.28 The deaf also suffer 00:09:16.32\00:09:18.35 because of their lack of knowledge 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.29 about who God is and who Jesus is. 00:09:20.32\00:09:24.33 Our goal for the deaf people 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.86 is to communicate clearly through sign language, 00:09:26.90\00:09:30.33 and to help them to understand who Jesus is. 00:09:30.37\00:09:33.00 So, Toshiro, what are your hopes, 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.44 your dreams, your plans 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.11 for deaf ministry here in Costa Rica? 00:09:42.14\00:09:45.08 Oh, what a good question. 00:09:49.22\00:09:51.49 As I said earlier, for many years, 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.49 I wanted to know more about the deaf culture. 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.56 But now that I participate 00:09:56.59\00:09:58.43 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:09:58.46\00:10:00.36 with deaf members, one of my greatest dreams, 00:10:00.40\00:10:03.87 and sometimes 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.23 I can even stop thinking about this. 00:10:05.27\00:10:07.64 It's to be able to start a church 00:10:07.67\00:10:10.17 for deaf Adventists in Costa Rica. 00:10:10.21\00:10:13.51 Why? 00:10:13.54\00:10:14.88 Because they need to know what the Bible really teaches, 00:10:14.91\00:10:18.21 especially what it teaches about the Sabbath. 00:10:18.25\00:10:21.32 Many deaf don't know about the Sabbath. 00:10:21.35\00:10:24.02 For generations, many Christians used to worship 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.25 on Sunday. 00:10:26.29\00:10:27.66 But now, through interpretation, 00:10:27.69\00:10:30.06 they can learn so much, 00:10:30.09\00:10:32.16 especially if they come to a place 00:10:32.19\00:10:34.06 that is prepared for the deaf community, 00:10:34.10\00:10:37.47 a place for them to come and learn, 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.10 a place for them to share experiences. 00:10:40.14\00:10:43.30 We want to start a congregation 00:10:43.34\00:10:45.47 that caters to the death in the country of Costa Rica. 00:10:45.51\00:10:51.08 Thank you. 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.45 Kathia, for viewers watching this program, 00:10:52.48\00:10:55.65 what advice would you give them 00:10:55.68\00:10:58.35 on how they can best relate to people 00:10:58.39\00:11:01.12 in the deaf community? 00:11:01.16\00:11:02.49 How do they build bridges? 00:11:02.52\00:11:03.86 How do they make friendship 00:11:03.89\00:11:05.23 when they don't understand the same language? 00:11:05.26\00:11:06.59 Kathia says, 00:11:12.17\00:11:13.60 "Well, I would suggest 00:11:13.64\00:11:15.14 to people interested in engaging the deaf 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.87 to let us know through some signs 00:11:17.91\00:11:19.64 like waving their hands. 00:11:19.67\00:11:22.34 This would let the deaf person know 00:11:22.38\00:11:24.38 that they're interested in some form of engagement." 00:11:24.41\00:11:27.85 Kathia, 00:11:27.88\00:11:29.22 also what would you suggest 00:11:29.25\00:11:31.02 that people do to make new friends? 00:11:31.05\00:11:35.96 I would invite people to come 00:11:35.99\00:11:37.63 and to get to know a deaf person. 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.00 Let us know their names and learn ours. 00:11:40.03\00:11:44.63 The deaf are often willing to teach some signs, 00:11:44.67\00:11:47.77 and if one is ready to learn, 00:11:47.80\00:11:49.84 this can become a beautiful friendship. 00:11:49.87\00:11:52.21 The simple steps 00:11:52.24\00:11:53.58 would enable us to slowly grow a friendship. 00:11:53.61\00:11:56.11 Gracias. 00:11:59.41\00:12:00.75 Toshiro, 00:12:00.78\00:12:02.12 when you were able to lead Kathia 00:12:02.15\00:12:05.22 to become a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:12:05.25\00:12:06.89 how did that make you feel? 00:12:06.92\00:12:11.06 You have another interesting question. 00:12:11.09\00:12:13.60 When Kathia came to my Adventist Church 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.96 for the first time, 00:12:16.00\00:12:17.40 I stood next to her 00:12:17.43\00:12:18.77 to interpret the sermon to sign language. 00:12:18.80\00:12:21.47 I felt strange. 00:12:21.50\00:12:22.94 I felt like God's Spirit was speaking to me saying, 00:12:22.97\00:12:25.87 "Now I have given you a great responsibility 00:12:25.91\00:12:29.44 to interpret for a deaf person." 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.21 I feel I have to share all that talent 00:12:32.25\00:12:34.15 that God has given me. 00:12:34.18\00:12:36.05 I have to share the Word of God to all the deaf community. 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.99 But each time I begin to think in signs, 00:12:40.02\00:12:42.99 whether I'm at home or at the church, 00:12:43.02\00:12:45.59 when there's something I can't translate, 00:12:45.63\00:12:47.90 it makes me want to get more involved 00:12:47.93\00:12:49.76 with the deaf 00:12:49.80\00:12:51.13 to be able to carry this important message to them. 00:12:51.17\00:12:55.14 It is my goal to share the Word of God with the deaf. 00:12:55.17\00:12:59.31 There are times when I only think in LESCO, 00:12:59.34\00:13:02.18 which is the Costa Rican sign language. 00:13:02.21\00:13:05.58 I desire to be among the deaf community. 00:13:05.61\00:13:08.68 My goal is to carry this gospel message 00:13:08.72\00:13:11.19 to the beautiful deaf community here in Costa Rica. 00:13:11.22\00:13:14.26 Thank you so much for sharing with us today. 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.10 Thank you, Kathia. 00:13:22.13\00:13:24.10 Viewers at home please pray for this special ministry 00:13:24.13\00:13:26.43 not just here in Costa Rica, but around the world. 00:13:26.47\00:13:29.04 Many, many people 00:13:29.07\00:13:30.41 who sometimes slip past our notice 00:13:30.44\00:13:33.17 who God loves so much. 00:13:33.21\00:13:34.54 We'll be right back after this break. 00:13:34.58\00:13:36.44
