Welcome back to Andrews University. 00:00:08.07\00:00:10.01 Behind me, you can see this iconic sculpture 00:00:10.04\00:00:13.38 of J.N. Andrews and his two children 00:00:13.41\00:00:15.81 going as the first Adventist missionaries, 00:00:15.84\00:00:18.05 the first official Adventist missionaries to go overseas. 00:00:18.08\00:00:21.32 And next up, we're going to hear 00:00:21.35\00:00:22.72 the amazing story of a missionary 00:00:22.75\00:00:25.19 who went to India at a very young age. 00:00:25.22\00:00:28.26 My guest today is one of the regional editors 00:00:28.29\00:00:30.86 of the Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventist 00:00:30.89\00:00:33.43 overseen by the Office of Archives, Statistics, 00:00:33.46\00:00:36.13 and Research at the General Conference. 00:00:36.16\00:00:38.10 This new reference work will include many topics 00:00:38.13\00:00:41.27 of interest to Seventh-day Adventist around the world, 00:00:41.30\00:00:44.01 including stories about Adventist Mission work 00:00:44.04\00:00:46.84 and missionaries. 00:00:46.88\00:00:48.28 Dr. Christo, welcome. Thank you. 00:00:48.31\00:00:51.15 It's a pleasure for me to participate in this video. 00:00:51.18\00:00:54.15 Today, you're gonna tell us a little bit about a missionary 00:00:54.18\00:00:56.62 named Theodore Flaiz who served many years in India. 00:00:56.65\00:01:00.39 Why did you choose him to talk about today? 00:01:00.42\00:01:03.32 When I reviewed the stories of missionaries, most of them, 00:01:03.36\00:01:07.73 well, many of them were sad, and actually depressing, 00:01:07.76\00:01:12.50 but the story of Flaiz I found inspiring and pleasant. 00:01:12.53\00:01:17.64 Okay. 00:01:17.67\00:01:19.01 Yeah, many missionaries, 00:01:19.04\00:01:20.38 many of our pioneer missionaries 00:01:20.41\00:01:21.78 ended up giving their lives and losing loved ones. 00:01:21.81\00:01:24.71 So I know what you're saying 00:01:24.75\00:01:26.08 when you say many of them are sad. 00:01:26.11\00:01:28.05 What role did Flaiz play 00:01:28.08\00:01:29.75 in the work of Adventist Mission? 00:01:29.78\00:01:33.02 Flaiz came to India when he was very young. 00:01:33.05\00:01:36.62 He was barely 23 years old, just married. 00:01:36.66\00:01:39.53 When he and his wife Jenny sailed for India, 00:01:39.56\00:01:42.73 came just in time to attend the meetings 00:01:42.76\00:01:44.63 of the 1919 Council 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.60 when Southern Asia division was formed. 00:01:47.64\00:01:49.94 And he was appointed superintendent of the first... 00:01:49.97\00:01:53.78 He was the first superintendent of the Telugu Mission. 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.78 And while he was 00:01:56.81\00:02:01.02 looking for a place to settle 00:02:01.05\00:02:04.09 and to situate the headquarters, 00:02:04.12\00:02:06.39 he received a number of letters from a certain party, 00:02:06.42\00:02:09.12 Mandla Abraham. 00:02:09.16\00:02:11.39 And Abraham said that 00:02:11.43\00:02:15.83 he was a minister for the CMS Mission. 00:02:15.86\00:02:18.80 And he said that he had accepted the doctrines 00:02:18.83\00:02:22.10 of the Adventist Church and it was in fact, 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.44 preaching some of them and wanted to work 00:02:24.47\00:02:26.88 for the Adventist Church. 00:02:26.91\00:02:28.98 So Flaiz invited him to attend a Colporteur Institute 00:02:29.01\00:02:32.98 with the idea that he might be a colporteur, 00:02:33.01\00:02:37.09 but when he came to attend the institute, 00:02:37.12\00:02:40.06 it was a rather cold morning. 00:02:40.09\00:02:41.79 So he wrapped himself up in a blanket 00:02:41.82\00:02:44.33 around this body over his head to cover himself 00:02:44.36\00:02:47.73 as much as possible. 00:02:47.76\00:02:49.63 And there was another colporteur 00:02:49.66\00:02:52.33 attending that institute 00:02:52.37\00:02:53.70 who took a look at him and said, 00:02:53.74\00:02:55.40 "Good morning, grandma." 00:02:55.44\00:02:56.97 Oh, no. 00:02:57.01\00:02:58.34 And this greatly upset Abraham, 00:02:58.37\00:03:02.34 who abused him with rather foul language. 00:03:02.38\00:03:05.91 Okay. 00:03:05.95\00:03:07.28 And this disturbed Flaiz and felt that 00:03:07.32\00:03:10.92 he could not be a good Adventist worker 00:03:10.95\00:03:13.86 and told him that he had to return home 00:03:13.89\00:03:16.59 and gave him some money to go home. 00:03:16.62\00:03:19.93 While Abraham was disturbed and upset, 00:03:19.96\00:03:23.70 and he heard that Flaiz 00:03:23.73\00:03:26.74 was going to be driving to Vijayawada, 00:03:26.77\00:03:29.74 which is where he was supposed to go. 00:03:29.77\00:03:32.31 And so he hung around thinking 00:03:32.34\00:03:33.68 that he could hitch a ride and save the fare. 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.81 Oh, Flaiz agreed to take him. 00:03:36.85\00:03:38.61 And while they were traveling by car, 00:03:38.65\00:03:42.45 Abraham told him, "You know, 00:03:42.48\00:03:44.22 I understand you're going for 00:03:44.25\00:03:45.59 in gathering to raise some funds for your work. 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.96 And incidentally, there is a Raja of Telaprolu, 00:03:48.99\00:03:52.09 who lives not far from here. 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.26 And if you go there, 00:03:54.30\00:03:55.66 I'm sure he will give you a good donation." 00:03:55.70\00:03:57.60 And he showed him a pencil he said the Raja had given him. 00:03:57.63\00:04:01.40 So that wasn't very far from Vijayawada, 00:04:01.44\00:04:03.84 which was where they were headed. 00:04:03.87\00:04:05.87 And when they got there, dropped off Abraham 00:04:05.91\00:04:08.64 and went to see the Raja. 00:04:08.68\00:04:10.58 The Raja said, "I don't know that guy. 00:04:10.61\00:04:14.68 And if he has a pencil, he says I gave him. 00:04:14.72\00:04:17.05 He must have stolen it." Oh, no. 00:04:17.09\00:04:19.35 But when he saw the brochure that Flaiz had 00:04:19.39\00:04:22.32 and saw that Adventists are running hospitals, 00:04:22.36\00:04:25.13 he said, "My mother was seriously ill. 00:04:25.16\00:04:29.66 And my father promised that 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.17 he would build a hospital, if she would get well. 00:04:31.20\00:04:35.14 Well, she got well, but my father died. 00:04:35.17\00:04:38.01 And it was up to me to fulfill that vow. 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.98 So I started building it and had to abandon the plans 00:04:41.01\00:04:44.31 because the World War 1912. 00:04:44.35\00:04:47.28 I couldn't get materials, so it stopped." 00:04:47.32\00:04:50.12 Okay. 00:04:50.15\00:04:51.75 If you would run a hospital, I'll give it to you 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.49 and some money to finish building it. 00:04:54.52\00:04:56.12 How providential. That's amazing. 00:04:56.16\00:04:59.59 And that's how the Giffard Memorial Hospital began, 00:04:59.63\00:05:04.90 but Flaiz also began a high school in our support, 00:05:04.93\00:05:08.20 which today is also a college. 00:05:08.24\00:05:10.71 So we have two very good institutions 00:05:10.74\00:05:12.77 because of Flaiz. 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.88 Is there anything about Flaiz that personally inspires you? 00:05:15.91\00:05:21.65 What impressed the people that he worked 00:05:21.68\00:05:24.15 with was that even though 00:05:24.19\00:05:25.52 he and his wife were very young, 00:05:25.55\00:05:27.56 they showed a maturity far beyond the age. 00:05:27.59\00:05:30.96 They welcomed people into their homes. 00:05:30.99\00:05:33.63 Even though people were looking into everything, 00:05:33.66\00:05:37.03 they felt at home with the local people, 00:05:37.07\00:05:40.20 the local people felt at home with them. 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.97 Even the decisions that he made, 00:05:43.00\00:05:45.34 demonstrated the maturity even though he was very young. 00:05:45.37\00:05:49.64 Dr. Christo, was Flaiz ever involved 00:05:49.68\00:05:51.85 in the work of the hospital? 00:05:51.88\00:05:54.52 He wasn't a physician at the time 00:05:54.55\00:05:56.28 when that donation was made, 00:05:56.32\00:05:58.32 but after a number of years 00:05:58.35\00:05:59.69 when his wife was not keeping well, 00:05:59.72\00:06:01.29 they came back to the US. 00:06:01.32\00:06:02.89 And he went to medical college 00:06:02.92\00:06:04.26 trained as a physician and came back, 00:06:04.29\00:06:06.03 and then served as a physician at that hospital. 00:06:06.06\00:06:08.33 Wow. 00:06:08.36\00:06:10.37 Were there any particularly struggles that he faced 00:06:10.40\00:06:13.00 when he was over there? 00:06:13.03\00:06:16.54 Perhaps the one struggle was his wife's illness 00:06:16.57\00:06:20.68 for which they came back. 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.31 And she eventually passed away, but he married again 00:06:22.34\00:06:25.68 and came back to India for the third time. 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.62 Wow, he couldn't get enough of mission work, 00:06:28.65\00:06:30.65 obviously, right? 00:06:30.69\00:06:32.92 He served at the GC also for about 19 years 00:06:32.95\00:06:36.29 as medical secretary. 00:06:36.32\00:06:37.66 Okay. 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.03 Then he came back after that to work in India, 00:06:39.06\00:06:40.40 that's where he systemized the work of our hospitals 00:06:40.43\00:06:44.53 and physicians in the division. 00:06:44.57\00:06:46.50 I wanna ask you one more question. 00:06:46.53\00:06:48.84 Why do you personally feel 00:06:48.87\00:06:50.91 that this encyclopedia project is so important? 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.51 Why is it so important to preserve the contributions 00:06:53.54\00:06:56.04 of our missionaries from the past? 00:06:56.08\00:06:58.78 The unfortunate situation is that in our division, 00:06:58.81\00:07:02.85 there's been no published history 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.99 of our division, no archives, 00:07:05.02\00:07:07.72 well no museum of collections. 00:07:07.76\00:07:10.76 And this work that's being promoted by 00:07:10.79\00:07:13.50 ASDR is creating an awareness 00:07:13.53\00:07:16.30 and an interest in this project. 00:07:16.33\00:07:18.60 So I'm happy to be working with it. 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.37 Wonderful. 00:07:20.40\00:07:21.74 Dr. Christo, thank you so much for sharing with us 00:07:21.77\00:07:23.71 a little bit of the life of Flaiz, 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.81 and giving us an idea of his contributions 00:07:25.84\00:07:28.11 to the work of this church. 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.15 You're very welcome.
